Primal Kyogre, Primal Groudon, and Mega Rayquaza debut in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

The main Legendaries of the Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald games, officially called the super-ancient Pokémon. Each of them embodies a part of the landscape: Groudon represents the continents, Kyogre represents the oceans, while Rayquaza represents the sky. Long ago, Groudon and Kyogre had a severe battle which almost brought an end to the world via flooding monsoons and raging infernos; luckily, they were calmed by light pouring from the Red and Blue Orbs and entered a deep slumber. Depending on the version, the player must face one of them which has been awakened by Team Magma (Groudon) or Team Aqua (Kyogre), as their mere presence has a great influence on the weather. In Emerald, both are awakened and it is up to the player to awaken Rayquaza and end the feud once more.

In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Groudon and Kyogre gained new forms called Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre that are said to be a regression called Primal Reversion. Primal Groudon becomes a Ground/Fire type while Primal Kyogre retains its typing. Rayquaza, on the other hand, gained a Mega Evolution and is also mentioned to have a connection with the concept of Mega Evolution somehow.

    Tropes Shared by all Three
  • Animalistic Abomination: They're ancient beings who accidentally created the oceans and lands as a result of their fighting. Awakening them causes the weather to go mad and has the risk of destroying Hoenn and quite possibly the world. Kyogre looks like the Leviathan, Groudon is inspired by a Kaiju and Rayquaza looks like a chinese mythological dragon.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: Of the land, sea, and sky, respectively.
  • Brought to You by the Letter "S":
    • Groudon and Kyogre's new forms in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have the Greek letters omega and alpha respectively added to the Tron Lines on their hands. Mega Rayquaza has a capital delta on its forehead, and the blades on its head form another delta.
    • The red Tron Lines on Kyogre's regular form resemble a Capital A (or in keeping with the theme, Alpha), the markings on Groudon's claws resembles an O, capital E or M, or an upside-down W (a lowercase Omega symbol is a curved W), and Rayquaza's markings incorporate the Lemniscate, the symbol for infinity.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: Not just in their own colors, but also the gemstones they represent respectively. Kyogre is blue (like water and sapphire), Groudon is red (like magma and ruby), and Rayquaza is green (like emeralds and presumably because of the Wind Is Green effect). Groudon's color is somewhat misleading, since by the looks of it, it would be easy to suppose Groudon's partially Fire-type. Nope, pure Ground unless it's in its Primal form.
  • Did We Just Have Tea with Cthulhu?: Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza are all incredibly powerful Pokémon with ties to the planet itself! And now, you can bounce yarn balls with them and feed them muffins! Groudon seems to prefer being pet on its chin and Kyogre likes being pet on the spots above its eyes, by the way.
  • Foil: Kyogre and Groudon foil each other, and Rayquaza foils both of them. Ironically, Rayquaza can be one-shotted by either if they know the appropriate moves. Mega Rayquaza stands a better chance thanks to its ability neutralizing the attacks its Flying-type is weak against.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration:
    • Rayquaza is said to appear when Kyogre and Groudon are in conflict and calms their powers. Rayquaza's ability Air Lock neutralizes the weather Kyogre and Groudon's abilities summon as long as it's in battle. Taken even further with Mega Rayquaza's ability Delta Stream, which also prevents weather from working and causes super-effective attacks against Flying-types to deal normal damage, meaning Kyogre's Ice-type attacks and Groudon's Rock-type attacks aren't as effective as they were before.
    • Primal Groudon's ability Desolate Land creates weather that completely nullifies Water-type attacks. This gives it a huge advantage against Kyogre if its weather is active, putting Groudon on equal footing with it as the legends say.
  • Gratuitous Greek: Groudon and Kyogre's Primal forms have Greek letters on their bodies. Mega Rayquaza has a capital Delta on its forehead and the blades on its head form another delta.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: Kyogre and Groudon in Emerald, Rayquaza in all three versions. Rayquaza is particularly notable, however, for the fact that you can get it just before the Elite Four at Level 70 in Emerald, meaning that the majority of the fights get significantly easier or become a Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Kaiju:
    • Kyogre and Groudon. Sootopolis was the unlucky city that had front row seats to their coming. Groudon in particular took many influences from Godzilla, especially the earlier ones.
    • When Pokémon Adventures adapted the Ruby and Sapphire games, the artist said that he wanted to recreate scenes from his favorite monster movies (similar to Godzilla films) when he was drawing the volumes that involved those two's disaster-filled awakening and eventual fight.
    • Rayquaza is actually benevolent, but both of its movie appearances have it fighting one or more Pokémon in a city while causing massive damage.
  • Heal Thyself: Groudon and Rayquaza naturally learn Rest, while Kyogre learns Aqua Ring.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • The bonuses granted by Kyogre's and Groudon's weather abilities can be used by opponents since they're field effects. Kyogre can be hit by a super-effective, always accurate Thunder, while Groudon doesn't like being hit by boosted Fire attacks against its lower Special Defense or a super-effective Solar Beam without the charge turn.
    • Rayquaza's Air Lock negates any weather-related bonuses or ability triggers, including for itself.
  • Jerkass Gods: Kyogre and Groudon, who, despite supposedly being the rulers of the oceans and the continents, have little interest in anything other than fighting each other and are indifferent to the fact that they'll kill everything else on Earth in the process. Subverted by Rayquaza, who turns out to be benevolent and will go out of its way to protect humans and even make alliances with them.
  • Land, Sea, Sky: Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza respectively.
  • Late Character Syndrome: Rayquaza is the only Legendary Pokémon to avert this trope in Emerald. While you can catch it before the eighth gym, it is at level 70, which is 12 levels above the strongest Pokémon the Champion has. The large level difference and Rayquaza's excellent stats mean it will be much stronger than whichever Pokémon the player can have at that point... but also mean that catching it without getting completely trampled will be hellishly difficult without a Master Ball.
  • Lightning Bruiser: As expected, their lowest stats are only low compared to other Olympus Mons.
  • Magic Knight:
    • Rayquaza can hit as hard as Groudon and Kyogre in their best offensive stats.
    • Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre get their weaker attack stat boosted to 150, allowing them to hit hard from both sides.
  • My Rules Are Not Your Rules:
    • Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon will transform into said state just by holding their respective orb upon being switched into battle, no activation required. Because they're not technically Mega Evolutions, they can be used alongside each other and don't prevent another Pokémon from Mega Evolving.
    • Rayquaza only needs to know Dragon Ascent to be able to Mega Evolve, thus being free to use any item of its choice (barring Z-Crystals, which prevent it from Mega Evolving).
  • No Biological Sex: All three are genderless.
  • Olympus Mons: Unlike previous Legendaries, who were simply mythical and very powerful, these three were the first to be treated as actual deity-like beings whose powers could affect the world at large.
  • Physical God: They created/rule over the oceans, continents, and atmosphere, respectively. "Gods" are the only way you can describe them. Rayquaza in particular is actually worshiped as the savior of the region in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
  • Plot Coupon That Does Something: This is the generation that introduced Abilities, and it just so happens that all three of their signature Abilities were relevant to the stories of their respective games. Drought and Drizzle became far less special in later generations, so Groudon and Kyogre got souped-up variations for their Primal forms.
  • Power Crystal: Kyogre and Groudon are associated with crystalline Orbs of their color, which can wake them up from their deep slumber and trigger Primal Reversion. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Rayquaza received its own Jade Orb, but it hasn't reappeared in any game since.
  • Power Glows: Primal Groudon and Kyogre's Tron Lines glow very brightly, and Mega Rayquaza's whiskers glow bright yellow. All three are significantly stronger than their normal counterparts.
  • Power Nullifier:
    • Primal Groudon's, Primal Kyogre's, and Mega Rayquaza's unique abilities prevent normal weather moves and abilities from activating. They also nullify Water moves for Groudon and Fire moves (except Will-O-Wisp) for Kyogre.
  • Purposely Overpowered:
    • You won't be able to use them in the Battle Facilities, most official tournaments, and most cups in 3D fighters.
    • The Primal Reversions aren't technically Mega Evolutions, and thus don't count against the "one Mega Evolution per battle" limit. You're even allowed to have both Primals active on your team at once.
    • Mega Rayquaza takes this trope to whole new heights. Rayquaza does not need a Mega Stone to Mega Evolve (just know Dragon Ascent), so it's allowed to hold any item its trainer wishes, unlike every other Mega-Evolving Pokémon (however, if it's holding a Z-Crystal, it won't be able to Mega Evolve). This is on top of having one of the highest base stat totals in the game, handily surpassing that of Arceus. And all this is, again, on top of having an ability that completely suppresses some of its biggest weaknesses and ensures that it cannot be hit by Ice moves for massive damage anymore. All this combines into such a ludicrously oppressive force that the community had to create a whole new tier of play above Ubers, the previous highest tier, solely for Mega Rayquaza. Its name? "Anything Goes". There's Purposely Overpowered and then there's "so Purposely Overpowered you break the metagame over your knee and make it cry uncle, and pretty much all the established rules of good sportsmanship need to be thrown out of the window just to have a chance at countering you."
  • Recurring Element: While Purposely Overpowered Olympus Mons were around before them, Gen III codified the Legendary mascot trio concept that all later games would use. Their relationship to each other has also been set — mascot Legendary trios now tend to focus on two members of the duo being in conflict with each other or otherwise symbolizing opposing principles, and the third member is an outsider that variably acts as a mediator or acts to control them in some manner.
  • Regional Redecoration: Kyogre possesses the ability to expand the oceans by flooding the land, while Groudon can expand the continents by raising land and boiling away the water. They did battle in ancient times.
  • Secret Art:
    • Prior to Generation V, the weather-altering abilities Drought and Drizzle were exclusive to Groudon and Kyogre, respectively. However, with the introduction of the Dream World in Pokémon Black and White, Ninetales and Politoed gained access to these abilities, and in Pokémon Sun and Moon, Torkoal and Pelipper got them as well. Rayquaza's Air Lock is this In Name Only, as Cloud Nine does the exact same thing.
    • In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, they all have have brand-new exclusive moves. Groudon's move is named Precipice Blades (an extremely powerful Ground-type physical attack with 85% accuracy), Kyogre's move is named Origin Pulse (a Water-type attack that functions as a slightly weaker, special Precipice Blades), and Rayquaza gets Dragon Ascent (an extremely powerful physical Flying attack which lowers its Def and Sp. Def stats after use, along with allowing it to Mega Evolve if it is known).
    • Also in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Primal Kyogre and Groudon gain the signature Abilities Primordial Sea and Desolate Land that summon special "heavy rain" and "extremely harsh sunlight" conditions, respectively. They work like normal, but they last as long as Primal Kyogre/Groudon are in, negate whatever type they normally weaken, and cannot be canceled except by the opposite weather condition or Delta Stream.note
    • Mega Rayquaza also gets a brand-new exclusive ability, Delta Stream, which changes air currents to produce "strong winds", which not only prevents weather-related moves from working and weather abilities from activating (with the exceptions of Desolate Land and Primordial Sea), but nullifies moves that Flying-type Pokémon are weak to so they only do normal damage.
    • The move V-Create, while designed as a Signature Move for Victini, was originally only available for both it and Rayquaza via an event, making it a pseudo-Secret Art for both of them. In Generation VIII, it was added to Victini's level-up movepool, cementing it as the true "owner" of the move as was intended, though Rayquaza is still an excellent user of the move with it being the strongest physical Fire-type attack it can learn.
  • Shout-Out: Groudon and Kyogre are based on the mythical Behemoth and the Leviathan, respectively, found in The Bible, more specifically in the Book of Job along with Rayquaza being a shoutout to Ziz, the primordial monster of the sky found in Jewish apocrypha. Interestingly enough according to Jewish lore, specifically in the apocryphal Book of Enoch both the Behemoth and the Leviathan are described as primeval beings with the Behemoth being the unconquerable monster of the land and the Leviathan being the monster of the sea along with Ziz as mentioned, being associated with the sky, which explains where the weather trio gets their typing. Furthermore, a great battle will take place between the two till the end of time, which Groudon and Kyogre's never ending feud comes from.
  • Sigil Spam: Kyogre and Groudon's Tron Lines have the letter A and M hidden in them, to correspond to the team trying to capture them. Upgraded when they undergo Primal Devolution to include an α and Ω as well. Rayquaza doesn't have an example with its Tron Lines, but Mega Rayquaza's jaw is a Δ, referencing its new ability and the name of the post-game plot that it stars in.
  • Single Specimen Species: One would imagine. Could you picture two of any of these guys running around?
  • Status Buff: Groudon raises its Defense and Attack stats with Bulk Up; Kyogre increases its special stats with Calm Mind; and Rayquaza heightens its Speed and Attack stats with Dragon Dance.
  • Super Mode: Primal forms for both Groudon and Kyogre, and a Mega Evolution for Rayquaza.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: All three of them have yellow colored eyes in their regular forms, and they are all fiercely powerful Pokémon of land, sky, and sea.
  • Support Party Member:
    • Drizzle, Drought, Primordial Sea, and Desolate Land will trigger some abilities while providing a damage bonus to Water- and Fire-type attacks.
    • Mega Rayquaza's ability, Delta Stream, causes all attacks that are super-effective against Flying-types to do neutral damage to all Flying-type Pokémon on the field.
  • Sword of Plot Advancement:
    • Kyogre and Groudon in their respective versions, to an extent. They must be encountered and either defeated or captured to progress with the plot, so they aren't technically required.
    • Mega Rayquaza in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, being the only way to reach and destroy a prophesied meteor before it hits the Pokémon world. Unlike Kyogre/Groudon, though, you can't get away with beating it; you have to catch it.
  • Time Abyss: Rayquaza is hundreds of millions of years old. Given they created the seas and land and fought in the distant past, so are Kyogre and Groudon. Fittingly enough, all three naturally learn Ancient Power.
  • Transformation Trinket:
    • The Red and Blue Orbs were retconned from Key Items in Ruby and Sapphire to held items for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, for the purpose of activating Primal Reversion for their respective Legendaries. Unlike Mega Evolution, the transformation instantly occurs the moment the Pokémon enters battle.
    • Rayquaza's Mega Stone is actually special meteors it stores in its body. Due to this, it doesn't need to hold a held item to Mega Evolve, but it does need to know the move Dragon Ascent in order to do so.
  • Tron Lines:
    • Red for Kyogre on its fins, blue for Groudon (they are slightly hard to see at times), and yellow for Rayquaza. Coincidentally, they represent the main colors used in subtractive color mixing. The patterns are also heavily featured in Emerald's pre-battle cutscenes and on the floor of the HeartGold and SoulSilver's Embedded Tower.
    • For Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Groudon sports molten-yellow Tron Lines and Kyogre has turquoise ones. Groudon has a glowing pattern on its hands resembling a capital Greek letter "omega" (Ω), while Kyogre has a lowercase "alpha" (α). Mega Rayquaza's tron lines appear to be peeling off its body and trailing behind it like streamers.
  • Volcanic Veins: All three have bright, pulsating veins or Tron Lines throughout their bodies. Primal Groudon plays it more straight by literally having veins flowing with glowing magma.
  • Weather Dissonance: Their weather will always appear, no matter how unfitting it may be. Sunlight in a dark cave? Heavy rain underwater?
  • Weather Manipulation: Each of their abilities manipulate the current weather to their liking.

Tropes Shared by Kyogre and Groudon
  • Apocalypse How:
    • The awakening of either Groudon or Kyogre constitutes at least a Class 2 if left unchecked for any length of time; Kyogre's awakening led to massive torrential rainfall that presumably would have flooded the entire planet (and, as Pokémon Generations showed, even Water Pokémon are threatened by the intensity of the floods), while Groudon's led to a massive drought and constant, extremely intense sunlight that would have burned the planet to a crisp.
    • The backstory of the trio's Primal and Mega forms states that after Groudon and Kyogre absorbed the planet's natural energies and engaged in Primal Reversion, their three-week-long clash disrupted the planet's balance and nearly hailed its imminent destruction before the pleas of Hoenn's inhabitants allowed Rayquaza to Mega Evolve and intervene.
      • It's notable that the sky lights on fire and a miniature star-like ball of fire appears above Hoenn the moment Groudon roars upon awakening, without even having Primal Evolved yet. Given this, Primal Groudon or Kyogre may constitute Class 4 at least.
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: When Groudon and Kyogre revert back to their primal forms, Primal Groudon's head crest begins to glow brightly and Primal Kyogre has a large, glowing A on its forehead, making it seem like they both have crowns. It is quite befitting for the kings of land and sea, actually.
  • Badass Decay: In-universe example. Groudon and Kyogre are respectable Pokémon with terrifyingly strong Earth altering effects if left to their own devices or if they are not properly controlled, but they used to be even more terrifying as in their Primal forms, which are said to be their true strength that they were unable to gain access to once Rayquaza deprived them of access to their primal forms. This can be undone if they have access to their respective orbs, which then reverts them to their prime.
  • Behemoth Battle: Groudon and Kyogre in their Primal forms are gigantic and their battles are equally so.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Rayquaza halted Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre's fight by reverting them to their regular forms. They're still a tough fight, being Legendary Pokémon that embody the land and sea.
  • Cranium Ride: In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the player gets to ride Groudon/Kyogre through a lava flow/turbulent waters to get to the source of power in the Cave of Origin.
  • Creation Myth: Kyogre and Groudon shaped the oceans and continents, though this seems to have been done mostly as an unintended side effect of their constant battles rather than them deliberately creating anything.
  • Deep Sleep: Groudon and Kyogre spent eons sleeping before being awakened by Team Magma/Aqua, and are only awakened by the Red or Blue Orbs and can easily go out of control after waking up.
  • Depower: In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the two's Primal states are their "true" forms, which Mega Rayquaza's power deprived them of in their final conflict prior to the present.
  • Discard and Draw: Primal Kyogre and Groudon are even more powerful and their special weather nullifies Fire/Water moves... but the instant they're out of battle, that weather stops. If they were the linchpins for a strategy involving weather-dependent abilities and are KOed early, the team's in trouble. Standard Kyogre and Groudon aren't as powerful, but they can hold items and their weather effects remain for a bit if they're fainted or switched out.
  • Fire/Water Juxtaposition: Kyogre represents the oceans, uses Water attacks, and creates a rainstorm when deployed, while Groudon represents continents, uses Ground and Fire attacks, and makes the sun shine. More accurate in their Primal forms when Groudon becomes part Fire-type.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: They are portrayed as fierce rivals and matches for each other in lore, but in actual gameplay Kyogre will typically win the matchup due to its main type being super-effective against Groudon's. Even if the latter gets its Drought to override the former's Drizzle, Kyogre still holds a massive advantage by virtue of learning Ice-type moves. If they reach their Primal forms, Groudon is even weaker to Kyogre's main STAB and will be hopelessly demolished assuming Primordial Sea is in effect, though if Desolate Land is in effect instead, Groudon can gain an advantage by virtue of neutralizing Kyogre's main STAB while still having access to its own, and Kyogre's Ice-type moves are no longer super effective against Primal Groudon by virtue of its added Fire typing.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Both Groudon and Kyogre gain these upon reverting into their Primal forms.
  • Hostile Weather: The weather Groudon and Kyogre summon can have catastrophic effects if left unchecked.
  • Irrational Hatred: Kyogre and Groudon don't have any personal reason to enter repeated clashes with one another, it's simply that they feel compelled to fight whenever they're around each other and do nothing to fight against those urges.
  • Knight of Cerebus: When Groudon and/or Kyogre show up, the entire world is threatened by the excessively powerful weather they summon. Even the villains are terrified when Groudon and/or Kyogre make their appearance.
  • Light 'em Up: Groudon is able to create miniature stars with Desolate Land and also naturally learns Solar Beam. Kyogre's Secret Art Origin Pulse is also described as being countless beams of brilliant blue light.
  • Mighty Glacier: Kyogre and Groudon, on the special and physical sides respectively, when compared to other Legendaries. They have very high offenses and defenses on one side of the spectrum (physical for Groudon and special for Kyogre) with good HP to back them up, but they're on the slow side and the other side of the spectrum isn't nearly as good.
  • Power Nullifier: Desolate Land and Primordial Sea nullify Water-Type and Fire-Type moves respectively. Groudon benefits from its ability more, since it becomes part-Fire upon Primal Reversion.
  • One-Hit KO: Groudon naturally learns Fissure, whereas Kyogre learns Sheer Cold.
  • The Stormbringer: Both titans summon perpetual weather as long as they're awake and out of control, with Groudon summoning inhospitably hot sunlight (presented by its Drought ability) and Kyogre summoning endless rain (represented by its Drizzle ability).
  • Transformation Is a Free Action: Primal Reversion takes it a step further than Mega Evolution; while Mega Evolution requires a Pokémon to stay in battle for one turn so the player can initiate it, Groudon and Kyogre transform immediately upon entering battle if they're holding their required item.
  • Walking Wasteland:
    • The awakening of either one of the duo constitutes an apocalyptic event and is entirely capable of wiping out humanity and the majority of Pokémon species. Ironically, Kyogre's Ruby Pokédex entry states that it was a savior to drought-affected municipalities, as was Groudon to flooded areas according to Sapphire.
    • Their Primal Reversions take it a step further. According to the Mega Evolution Pokédex, Primal Groudon creates new land with every step because of the magma flowing from its body, while Primal Kyogre increases the size of the sea merely by swimming.
  • Weaksauce Weakness:
    • Kyogre has a very low amount of movesnote  that can penetrate Shedinja's Wonder Guard, and little incentive to learn them outside of facing one. If it doesn't know them, it'll be forced to either switch out or suffer a Death of a Thousand Cuts from an undead cicada.
    • Grass Knot is a move that works by tripping an opponent with a clump of grass; the heavier the target, the more damage it takes. Normal Groudon and both forms of Kyogre have the misfortune of being a) weak to Grass-type moves and b) among the heaviest Pokémon in the entire series (with Groudon being the heaviest until Gen 7), which can lead to some embarrassing defeats.
    • Primal Groudon has less to fear from Grass Knot, being part Fire-type. Sadly, it has another problem: Desolate Land is the only thing that staves off its crippling weakness to water, so a Water-type that nullifies weather conditions can absolutely destroy it. Enter Cloud Nine Psyduck...
  • Weather Report: The player can find out where Groudon or Kyogre is in Emerald by talking to one of the meteorologists at the weather facility. Depending on what day it is, the meteorologist will tell you where there is harsh sunlight or torrential downpours on a certain route, and once you find said route, you'll find Groudon in a cave or Kyogre underwater, respectively.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Implied to be the reason Groudon and Kyogre cause problems for the world. Under normal circumstances, they are not harmful, and in fact in the past have rescued human civilizations from floods and droughts, respectively. However, as embodiments of natural forces, they are heavily influenced by and desire sources of great natural energy (and also are compelled to oppose each other), despite how acquiring too much of it causes them to lose control of this energy and be consumed by it. Archie even outright asks the player character to "save Kyogre" when it has gone out of control.
  • Yin-Yang Clash: Groudon vs. Kyogre, requiring Rayquaza to break them up.

    Tropes Exclusive to Kyogre
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kyogre382.png
Kyogre
Primal Kyogre

  • Awesome, but Impractical: If it is taught Surf in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Kyogre obtains a unique surfing model that goes a bit faster than other Pokémon. Teaching it Dive also allows you to see it in its full glory underwater, at the cost of the behemoth's size preventing you from going very far through the many narrow trenches.
  • Battle in the Rain: Will naturally occur when Kyogre enters battle, due to its Drizzle ability. If it undergoes Primal Reversion and stays in battle, the rain cannot be stopped by weather-changing moves or abilities save for Desolate Land and Delta Stream.
  • Cue the Rain: Kyogre's Drizzle ability automatically summons rain.
  • Developer's Foresight: If Kyogre somehow gets the Mega Launcher Ability, Origin Pulse will receive the Ability's damage boost to pulse moves.
  • Devious Dolphins: Kyogre bears some resemblance to real-world orcas, and that trope doesn't stop there.
  • Flying Seafood Special: Kyogre can somehow fly in Mystery Dungeon, Super Smash Bros., and Pokemon Generations, while its animations in the 3D games shows it floating slightly off the ground like the other non-terrestrial Water-types.
  • The Great Flood: What would happen if the protagonist hadn't stopped Kyogre and Team Aqua in Sapphire and Alpha Sapphire.
  • Happy Rain: According to the Ruby Pokédex, Kyogre saved people who were suffering from droughts with its torrential downpours.
  • An Ice Person: Kyogre can naturally learn Ice Beam and Sheer Cold.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Its name was originally trademarked in Japan as Kaiorga, but was changed early on to Kyogre to match the rest of the world.
  • Lord of the Ocean: Kyogre embodies the ocean and has control over its levels.
  • Making a Splash: It's the very representation of the seas.
  • Personal Rain Cloud: More like personal hurricane in Kyogre's case.
  • Power Up Mount: Kyogre is one of the few Pokémon in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire to get a unique surf/dive model, travelling faster than most Pokémon, but not as fast as Sharpedo as well as lacking the latter's fishing restriction. However, teaching it Dive proves to be Awesome, but Impractical, as its large size makes it near impossible to get into anything not out in the open, and if you want to avoid this restriction, you'll need to teach Dive to a different Pokémon.
  • Rain Dance: The biggest reason Kyogre is so powerful. Summoning rain once it enters battle boosts its already strong STAB Water attacks, and gives Thunder (which it also learns) perfect accuracy. Unlike Groudon, Kyogre's Special Attack is its forte, letting it get the most out of its rain-powered attacks. Primal Kyogre has Primordial Sea, which makes heavy rain that lasts as long Primal Kyogre is in battle, prevents other weather abilities/moves from working, and outright prevents Fire-type moves from working.
  • Rain, Rain, Go Away: Whenever Kyogre is in the area, people tend to take shelter in their homes and try to wait it out. Played for Drama since Kyogre's rains may never stop and usually create treacherous floods. In Sapphire, the residents of Sootopolis City try to hide in their homes and literally pray in order to survive Kyogre's harsh weather when it journeys into their city after waking up from its long slumber.
  • Sea Monster: Kyogre, based upon the mythical Leviathan.
  • When It Rains, It Pours: Kyogre's Drizzle ability. Instead of a light drizzle like the name would lead you to believe, we're talking rain heavy enough to start floods in almost an instant.
  • Your Size May Vary: When diving on Kyogre in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, it's almost twice as as long the player is. When surfing, however, Kyogre practically shrinks to half its size.

    Tropes Exclusive to Groudon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/groudon383.png
Groudon
Primal Groudon

  • Acrofatic: Groudon's pretty fast for being one of the heaviest, non-glitch Pokémon in the whole franchise (it was the heaviest until Cosmoem and Celesteela arrived, which are just slightly heavier).
  • Climactic Volcano Backdrop: Whenever you battle Groudon in Ruby, Emerald, or Omega Ruby, you'll always be surrounded by magma.
  • Cue the Sun: Groudon's Drought ability intensifies the sun's rays.
  • Dinosaurs Are Dragons: Groudon's design has some saurian traits, but it can breathe fire like a dragon if it knows Flamethrower, Fire Blast, or Lava Plume, and can also learn Dragon-type attacks like Dragon Claw. Primal Groudon even gets a Fire secondary type.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Groudon. Hell, Groudon is the very incarnation of the ground.
  • Don't Wake the Sleeper: Volcanoes will erupt whenever Groudon awakens from its slumber.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Groudon is said to sleep in the magma; in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, it's one of the few non Fire-type Pokémon that can walk on lava without getting burned, and the only one with such capability in the original Rescue Team.
  • Heat Wave: Groudon's intense heat waves cause everyone to run indoors in Ruby and Omega Ruby.
  • Kill It with Water: Subverted with Groudon. While it's weak to it due to Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors, its abilities either lessen the blow or negate Water moves completely.
  • Lava Pit: Groudon is found in a big one of these in Emerald, a smaller one in Ruby, and in Omega Ruby, the Cave of Origin's core will be an expansive one.
  • Light Is Good: According to Sapphire Pokédex entry, Groudon's heat waves and intense sunlight were said to have saved those who were suffering from floods and long-lasting storms.
  • Light Is Not Good: However, waking up Groudon is a tremendously bad idea, as Team Magma learned. Especially when its light causes the sky to burn and would eventually roast every living thing to death.
  • Living Lava: Primal Groudon is so hot that parts of its body become molten lava.
  • Magma Man: It's a Ground-type, but like Lugia's association with water, it's strongly associated with volcanoes and magma and sunlight (and by extension, Fire). The reason why it wasn't given a secondary Fire type at first was probably to not let it be killed too easily by Water-types, especially its nemesis Kyogre. And then, in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, it was given a new form that is indeed Ground/Fire...
  • Notzilla: Groudon is an immeasurably old, extremely powerful saurian creature whose battles with Kyogre cause mass destruction.
  • Playing with Fire: Groudon is normally not a Fire-type itself, but it does learn a few Fire moves naturally. Its ability gives a pseudo-STAB boost to Fire and increases the power of other's Fire attacks. Primal Groudon, however, actually is part Fire-type.
  • Power of the Sun: Groudon summons sunny weather on entry into battle. Despite not being Fire-type (at least in base form), it has Fire-type attacks and Solar Beam to take advantage of this, and enjoys its weakness to Water-type attacks being effectively nullified. However, compared to Kyogre (see Rain Dance below), Groudon isn't as impressive in this, since all its Fire-type attacks and Solar Beam run off its Special Attack; its stats are slanted towards physical moves, and the only physical move it learns that sunny weather powers up is the Fire Punch. Primal Groudon, on the other hand, has the ability Desolate Land, which makes the sunny weather last as long as Groudon's in the battle, prevents other weather abilities/moves from working, and negates Water-type moves. While Primal Groudon gains the Fire type and a boost in Special Attack to abuse its weather a bit better than before, it's still not as good on the offensive as Primal Kyogre, since most of its Fire attacks still run on its inferior Special attack stat. On the defensive side of things, however, Desolate Land is better than Primordial Sea as it completely hoses Primal Groudon's biggest weakness while Primordial Sea only intensifies one of Kyogre's.
    • Primal Groudon's Desolate Land ability is manifested in the story as creating a miniature sun over Sootopolis.
  • Prehistoric Animal Analogue: Design-wise, Groudon is based on theropod dinosaurs (the two-legged meat-eating kind that included Tyrannosaurus rex), with features of other dinos like Ankylosaurus.
  • T. Rexpy: Groudon's design is based on the general family of dinosaurs (theropods) that included T. rex, although unlike with Fossil Pokémon, its specific species basis is unclear.
  • Takes One to Kill One: Due to Desolate Land, Primal Groudon's only weakness is Ground.
  • Throat Light: Primal Groudon's throat is obviously glowing.

    Tropes Exclusive to Rayquaza

Rayquaza
Mega Rayquaza

  • The Artifact: The Jade Orb, an item required to encounter Rayquza in Heart Gold and Soul Silver, is connected to the legendary beast to summon it, but is otherwise forgotten about entirely. Unlike Kyogre and Groudon's associated orbs, Rayquaza cannot use it to undergo Primal Reversion.
  • Batman Can Breathe in Space: Even if it lives in between the high stratosphere to low mesosphere, Rayquaza seems to breathe just fine. You even ride Mega Rayquaza into space in the Delta Episode, though you need the Aqua/Magma Suit to survive.
  • Berserk Button: Rayquaza does not like having its hands touched in Pokémon-Amie. For more serious examples, media adaptations have shown intruding on its territory is a good way to set it off. Lastly, Rayquaza really doesn't suffer Groudon and Kyogre's behavior gladly and has previously took rather aggressive actions in regards to them.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In Emerald, invoked by the player character, who climbs Sky Pillar to warn Rayquaza that Kyogre and Groudon are squaring off again. Rayquaza flies to Sootopolis City, makes a dramatic entrance from the clouds, and forces them both to retreat with a single roar.
  • Blow You Away: Rayquaza is the sky incarnate. Mega Rayquaza even creates strong winds when entering the field.
  • Bragging Rights Reward: In Ruby and Sapphire, Rayquaza can only be caught in the post-game, but there is very little content in which it can be feasibly used in. The remakes alleviate this a little by giving the player the opportunity to use it against Zinnia, and subsequently, Deoxys, in the Delta Episode. In Emerald, however, Rayquaza can be caught before the eighth Gym (though at level 70, catching it then and there won't be easy).
  • Breakout Character: Rayquaza is arguably the Charizard of the third generation. The green dragon tends to score really high on popularity polls and rarely does it ever not appear in any other Pokémon related media, whether it is the anime or games. With that said, Rayquaza was also the most voted on the 15th anniversary poll, which was for the version mascots of the core series Pokémon games, making it Japan's favorite version mascot. Naturally, its popularity heightened even more after it received a Mega Evolution and became the star of ORAS's Delta Episode.
  • Characterization Marches On: In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team, one of the first spin-offs created after Ruby and Sapphire, Rayquaza was depicted as fickle and caring more about fighting the heroes than saving the world from a meteor before they persuaded it to take action. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, however, Rayquaza was perfectly willing to do the same thing as a benevolent protector of humanity.
  • Containment Field: Rayquaza can perform this, having created a seal around the Underwater Cavern where Groudon and Kyogre dwell to keep them in their slumber and prevent humans and Pokémon from entering and disturbing the creature. Pity it didn't know technology would eventually become a thing...
  • Conflict Killer: As the internal mediator of the trio, Rayquaza is the only one who can calm the two other Pokémon down. If they still aren't calm, Rayquaza is more than willing to solve the conflict through more aggressive means.
  • Crystal Dragon Jesus: Arceus, its creations, and Necrozma may be Physical Gods, but Rayquaza is the only one to have a confirmed in-universe religion following it. Prayer to it is even the key to Mega Evolving it.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Rayquaza may look intimidating in its black under-bellied Mega form or in its almost completely black Shiny form, but it still exists to stop Groudon and Kyogre's apocalyptic battles and protect the atmosphere.
  • Death from Above: Rayquaza's Signature Move, Dragon Ascent, has it to fly up into the air before diving straight down towards the opponent.
  • Depending on the Artist: What shade of green Rayquaza is.
  • Dragon Rider: The player gets to ride Mega Rayquaza into space in the "Delta Episode". Additionally, Rayquaza naturally learns Fly and you can teach it Surf and Waterfall.
  • Dragons Are Divine: Rayquaza is seen as Hoenn's protector deity, particularly by the Draconids.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Unlike the many "secret third sibling" Legendaries that would come after it, Rayquaza wasn't given any permanent Forme changes in its spotlight game/generation. It did get a Mega Evolution in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, but it can't be kept outside of battle like Origin Forme Giratina, Black/White Kyurem, 10% Forme Zygarde, or Dusk Mane/Dawn Wings Necrozma.
  • Emerald Power: Rayquaza. It is even the most powerful and one of the highest level wild Pokémon you can catch in Emerald. You can even catch it before battling the Elite Four. With its new Mega Evolution in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, its base stat total surpasses Arceus in the same manner as Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y — except that M-Rayquaza can hold items, unlike any other Mega Evolution.
  • Emotion Control: Rayquaza has the power to calm down Groudon and Kyogre's fury.
  • Face of a Thug: Rayquaza might look terrifying, but it's actually a benevolent being who protects the world from Groudon and Kyogre's rampages. It was even revered by people in the past as their protector and savior.
  • Flight: Rayquaza is part Flying-type and is noted to spend most of its time flying throughout the ozone layer.
  • Giant Flyer: Rayquaza. Its Mega-Evolution is even the tallest Legendary and second-tallest Pokémon overall.
  • Glass Cannon: Rayquaza, when compared to Kyogre and Groudon. It hits as hard as them on their strong sides and is slightly faster, but takes hits as bad as them on their weak sides.
  • God Needs Prayer Badly: Unlike every other Mega Evolving Pokémon, the message that appears prior to Rayquaza's Mega Evolution is not "Rayquaza's (mega stone) is reacting to (player)'s Mega Bracelet!", but instead "(player)'s fervent wish reached Rayquaza!". Rayquaza was also noted in the trio's new backstory to have achieved Mega Evolution when the people of Hoenn prayed to it.
  • Inconsistent Dub: While most media pronounces Rayquaza's name as Ray-KWA-zuh, the anime tends to aim for Ray-CRAY-zuh.
  • Irony: Hilariously, pitting regular Rayquaza against Mega Rayquaza results in regular Rayquaza's Air Lock suppressing Mega Rayquaza's Delta Stream, since the latter is considered a weather condition. (It likely won't take long for Mega Rayquaza to swat normal Rayquaza down, though.)
  • Lightning Bruiser: Mega Rayquaza gains a substantial boost in Attack, Special Attack, and Speed compared to its base form, letting it be even more effective as an attacker. Its Defense and Special Defense got more modest boosts and are still its lowest stats, but Delta Stream summons a weather condition that effectively halves damage done by moves that would be super-effective to a Flying-type Pokémon, giving Mega Rayquaza deceptively high durabilitynote . Mega Rayquaza is essentially an Attack Forme Deoxys that trades some Speed for the ability to actually take hits.
  • Magic Meteor: Rayquaza consumes meteoroids for sustenance. The many meteoroids in its body work kind of like a Mega Stone, providing the energy it needs to Mega Evolve and allowing it to hold items while doing so.
  • Mighty Roar: Rayquaza lets out a powerful roar to relinquish the fight between the titans of land and sea.
  • Mutually Exclusive Power-Ups: In Gen VII, Rayquaza can't Mega Evolve and hold a Z-crystal to use a Z-move. That's where Game Freak draws the line.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Despite the name, Dragon Ascent, the move required for Rayquaza to Mega Evolve, isn't a Dragon-type move. Rather, it's actually a Flying-type move, named as such because its sole intended user is a dragon.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: At some point in the past Rayquaza was able to battle both Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon at the same time, and not only won but actually stopped them from accessing their full power without the power of the Red or Blue Orbs. And this was without it being capable of accessing higher power at the time.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Rayquaza, although rather close to the traditional Chinese version. Its Mega Evolution makes it look even more like a Chinese dragon.
  • Playing with Fire: It can learn various Fire-type moves via TM, but is also one of only two Pokémon to get V-Create, the most powerful Fire-type move in the game, via event.note
  • Rays from Heaven: In Emerald, Rayquaza creates a hole through the dark clouds while letting rays of sunshine cut through when it arrives to stop Groudon and Kyogre's battle.
  • Recurring Element: While not the first Dragon-type Legendary (beaten out by fellow Gen III Pokémon Latios and Latias), it is the first to have stats on par with previous "uber"-Legendaries such as Mewtwo and Lugia, setting a precedent of having an extremely powerful Dragon Legendary for future generations.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Mega Rayquaza has red pupils, compared to regular Rayquaza's yellow ones. This is only a sign of its power, however, as Rayquaza is benevolent.
  • The Rival: Averted in the original third generation games, but ever since Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys, Rayquaza and Deoxys keep getting thrown at one another. Of note is the original Mystery Dungeon, in which Rayquaza is needed to avert the meteor coming to destroy the planet (which you later discover contains Deoxys). This plot thread was Recycled in the Delta Episode of ORAS, with a further reference to Deoxys' original Birth Island encounter thrown in.
  • Slasher Smile: Although it lacks teeth, Rayquaza has the most unsettling grin.
  • Space Master: It can fly through and breathe in space with ease, and frequently does so to face off against Deoxys. It also gets STAB on Draco Meteor (like almost all users of the move), and has it as its ultimate move in Pokémon Masters.
  • Super-Speed: Rayquaza can naturally learn Extreme Speed. Dragon Ascent, its signature move, is portrayed this way in the anime, as well.
  • Token Good Teammate: While Kyogre and Groudon are largely amoral beasts that only care about defeating each other, Rayquaza has humanity's interests at heart and is perfectly willing to save them from apocalyptic disaster.
  • Took a Level in Badass: While Rayquaza was already quite notable for being the mediator between Kyogre and Groudon, it can go through Mega Evolution which powers it up considerably.
  • Tornado Move: Rayquaza naturally learns Twister, whereas Kyogre learns Water Spout (sea tornado).
  • Wind Is Green: Rayquaza represents the sky and is green.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Rayquaza naturally learns the powerful Dragon-type move, Outrage.
  • Useless Useful Spell: Rayquaza can learn Sunny Day and Rain Dance... not that its abilities allow them to work at all.
