"Forever exists..."
The protagonist. A seemingly normal second-year high school student who aimlessly goes about his daily life and routine.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His father died when he was little, his mother went crazy, and his little sister died after a year of treatment in the hospital. He moved in with his aunt to escape from those painful memories.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Kohei from the beginning right to the end, setting the trend for Key heroes in subsequent stories.
  • Determinator: In Mio's route, he refuses to disappear until after seeing her first theater performance.
  • Deus Sex Machina: To return from the eternal world, Kohei must have sex with a consenting girl to form a bond with them that can be used to return after a year. Subverted in some routes wherein you can choose to have a non-sexual, but nonetheless romantic relationship.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: Kohei speaking his mind by accident during Rumi's h-scene.
Kohei *thinking to himself*: (We look like we are connected at the hips..)
Kohei: "We look like we are connected at the hips." *Kick*
Rumi: Stop it, you're embarrassing me!
Kohei: (Did I really just say that out loud?)
  • Disappeared Dad: His father hasn't been a part of his life since early childhood and he long forgot what his face looks like. Mio's route reveals that he indeed died.
  • Easily Forgiven: Mizuka is quick to forgive him for everything, even ploys that go way beyond his usual teasing and pranks in the common route.
  • Faceless Protagonist: Played straight in most event CGs but averted in SD panel moments throughout the story and in one CG during Akane's route.
  • Heavy Sleeper: Even more so than just Not a Morning Person as he can't go a single day in school without falling asleep in class at some point. In Misaki's route, he falls asleep during class one day and doesn't wake up until the next morning!
  • Heroic BSoD: More prominent in some routes than others, but knowing he's going to disappear and the people he's closest with beginning to forget him cause him to react ranging from panic to near-complete shutdown. It's very evident in Misaki's route.
  • Jerk Ass Realization: He realizes he was about to go way too far and cross an In-Universe Moral Event Horizon in Mizuka's route with his Near-Rape Experience ploy. Mizuka still forgives him because he put a stop to it before it could go too far even though he refuses to forgive himself for letting it get that far in the first place.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Kohei starts a jerk, finds the gold later.
  • I Gave My Word: His reason for sticking around until the end on Misaki's route: He promised to see her graduate.
  • Imagine Spot: He'll often imagine something he thinks one of the girls could do to him after making a choice.
  • Inner Monologue: Another one of his traits throughout the full game.
  • Is It Something You Eat?: What he asks regarding the birthday present Akane buys for him at the climax of her routenote .
  • Oblivious to Love: Kohei during Rumi's route, he can't understand why she is disappointed when he takes her to cheap ramen restaurant to try its new ramen on Christmas eve. He does eventually get it when she runs out crying.
  • Poor Communication Kills: He's basically tricked into confessing to Mizuka in her route and certainly wasn't expecting her to take it seriously. This leaves him embittered because telling her it was meant to be a joke confession would have hurt her feelings, so he does increasingly-mean things to try and drive her away instead, which culminates with bringing in a random guy to try and rape her!
  • Ret-Gone: Kohei's ultimate fate in the bad endings.
  • Self-Imposed Challenge: In-Universe, he attempts to return Misaki's library books in complete darkness in order to better understand what it's like for her after having lost her sight. Dropping the books, getting disoriented, and knocking things over immediately helps him realize how difficult it can be.
  • Sweet Tooth: He internally reveals that he has a much larger one than anyone may expect, but he's got nothing on Akane.
  • Wham Episode: Late in the game, Kohei ends up remembering the full extent of his Darkand Troubled Past, and the deal he made to erase himself from the real world in order to live in a blissful eternity. The plot takes a sharp turn towards Darker and Edgier and Tear Jerker territory from then on with Kohei realizing that he has very limited time left in the real world and the rest of the cast beginning to forget about him. In the bad endings, he's unable to stop or mitigate this turn of events, and ends up disappearing from the real world entirely.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: He realizes his family and friends are starting to forget about him in most routes. In Akane's, it's further cemented when he finds everything from his room thrown out of Yukiko's house.

"Come on! Time to wake up!"
Kohei's childhood friend and neighbor who does her best to wake him up for school each morning with varying degrees of success.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Even Kohei is afraid of what she might do if he pushes her too far, even if a lot of the consequences are within his Imagine Spot moments.
  • Butt-Monkey: She is the target of nearly all of Kohei's practical jokes and pranks, especially when she's trying to wake him up.
  • Character Catch Phrase: She says "You know" and "after all" a lot, leading Kohei at one point to call her Nagamori of the planet 'You know after all'.
  • Expy: Inverted. Ayu, from Kanon, is an expy of her.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: Kohei describes her as a "cat whisperer" as stray cats are constantly drawn to her and she's always taking them in. She claims to have no more than eight though.
  • Love at First Sight: She's been in love with Kohei since they were children. She even gave him his First Kiss within moments of their first meeting to cheer him up.
  • Near-Rape Experience: Kohei plans to have her raped by an anonymous person in order to show her what a rotten person he really is so she'll break up with him, but decides that this is a bad idea and stops it before it can go too far. This is the good route.
  • Patient Childhood Love Interest: Extremely patient in her case, both in terms of time waiting and how much she's had to put up with from Kohei.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: She'll often turn Kohei's snark back on him when she's running out of patience with him. When he claims to be having a stroke to get out of cleaning duty, she responds with, "Then you'll just have to die."
  • Spit Take: Kohei asking her about her love life in her route causes her to spit out her drink in surprise.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Milk, making it a trademark favorite drink, as she has it with every meal.

"What the hell are you doing?!"
A girl who transfers into Kohei's class at the beginning of the story.
  • Crash-Into Hello: She first meets Kohei and Mizuka at the start of the story when the former runs into her while running late.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She starts this way but melts herself. Kohei is too dense to notice.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: She grew up practicing kendo until a hip injury forced her to quit during middle school. She stayed with the team as a coach and advisor for another year.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in long twin-tails on each side with bows at the top. They are constantly a tempting target for both Kohei and Mayu to yank.
  • Moment Killer: A combination of situations 3 & 4 occurs during her H-Scene: She's too nervous to go through with it, so just when it seems they are about to start, she clicks on the television and blurts out "OH LOOK SUMO WRESTLING IS ON, I LOVE SUMO WRESTLING." Kohei just sighs and tries to steer things back on course.
  • New Transfer Student: The first day of the story begins with her transferring into Kohei's class, albeit wearing her old uniform.
  • Running Gag: She's subject to a few.
    • Colliding with Kohei when the two are running late for school.
    • Her attempts at joining one of the culture clubs at school only to be immediately kicked out when Kohei does something to get her angry.
    • Finding a thumbtack placed on her chair, pointing it out to Kohei, and still sitting on it!
    • On Mayu's route, Mayu constantly pulling her hair because it reminds her of her ferret.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She's short-tempered and can often resort to coarse language, but still enjoys feminine clothes and dreams of being treated like a princess.
  • Transfer Student Uniforms: She wears her old school uniform even though she got one from the school, she just likes her old one. This comes in handy for Mayu's route when they need a spare uniform for her.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Nanase dreams of becoming a true "maiden", so she tries to behave kind and cute, however, her act goes down thanks to Kohei's tricks.

    Misaki Kawana

"I'm just joking~"
A third-year student at Kohei's school who he meets up on the roof one afternoon. She reveals right away that she's blind.
  • Big Eater: She downs five plates of curry and two more plates of katsu curry the first time she and Kohei eat lunch together. Ironically this takes place after Kohei claimed to Rumi that he could eat enough for five people easily.
  • Cerebus Retcon: Misaki decides to take her revenge on Kohei for running into her at the start of her route and not responding to her by saying "Who are you?" when he walks up to the roof. Little did she know that he was in the middle of a breakdown because he actually was being forgotten by everyone and she was the last one that would remember him.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: She explains to Kohei that she's good at reading people when they first meet, coupled with a bit of Self-Deprecation at wondering how that's possible when she's blind.
  • Hates Being Touched: Kohei's initial attempt at leading her somewhere by taking her hand causes her to recoil in horror, giving it this appearance. Averted in that it turns out it was more about where he wanted to take her versus outright being touched.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: One of Kohei's initial thoughts about her when they first meet is describing her as beautiful.
  • It's All About Me: Downplayed in that she really just doesn't like not being part of a conversation when people are talking around her. But she doesn't try to derail the topic and bring it back around to her, she just tells the people involved that she felt left out.
  • It's Not You, It's Me: She's never had a boyfriend as, since losing her sight, she's felt she would only be a burden and an inconvenience to anyone she fell in love with. Kohei calls her out on this by using her own words of, "If that's your only reason, then I'm going to be really mad," against her.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: In her route, she's the only one who remembers Kohei starting in mid-February and that realization keeps him from crossing the Despair Event Horizon while also giving him the determination to stick around as long as possible for her sake.
  • Reflectionless Useless Eyes: She's depicted with these and Kohei notes he can't even see his own reflection in them.
  • Super-Senses: Her sense of hearing is very acutely tuned to the point of recognizing Kohei's voice just from hearing him sigh, being able to identify someone from the sounds of their footsteps, and she can pick up the tone in Mio's voiceless grunts to be able to understand what she's trying to convey.
  • Tranquil Fury: She doesn't raise her voice, but she's clearly angry at Kohei when he suggests he did nothing more than waste her time with their impromptu Christmas party. As she was enjoying every moment otherwise and just being together, she calls him out for thinking that way.
  • Truth in Television: Misaki's surprised reactions to suddenly being touched without warning are why it's a good idea to never touch a blind person without an invitation or permission, and to let them know where.
  • Troll: She's the only one whose buttons Kohei can't push because she's constantly pushing his.

    Akane Satomura

Akane Satomura

"I'm still waiting..."
A girl in Kohei's class who seems to never smile. She can be almost always be found at a vacant lot near the school on rainy days.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Her (intended) final words to Kohei before he disappears are that she truly loved him after explaining she fully intends to forget about him so as not to have to endure the same pain twice after losing her other friend to the Eternal World.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: She surprises Kohei by downing the odd beverage from one of the local vending machines that he had failed multiple times before in one go and quite liking it despite him tricking her into trying it.
  • Emotionless Girl: Starts off as this but eventually opens up in her route. Getting a small smile out her really feels satisfying.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Despite being a girl of few words, she's an absolute sweetheart.
  • I Have This Friend: In her true final conversation with Kohei before he vanishes, she pretends to have already forgotten about him while talking about him in this fashion. The facade drops when Kohei disappears after opening the birthday present she got him.
  • Never Gets Drunk: Akane can hold her alcohol like a pro, even though she isn't even old enough to be drinking. She goes even farther by not passing out, remaining completely level-headed, and even cleaning the entire house.
  • No Name Given: The game itself never names the childhood friend she's been waiting for. Supplemental materials reveal it to be Tsukasa.
  • Sweet Tooth: She easily downs an entire waffle that’s so sweet Kohei couldn’t take more than a single bite of. It makes him wonder how she maintains her figure.
  • Supreme Chef: She single-handedly saves the cake made for the Christmas party on her route while Mio is in clear awe of her skills.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Her favorite treat is a waffle from a store called Yamahodo. She has Kohei buy her some before she'll forgive him for tricking her.
  • Umbrella of Togetherness: Sharing her umbrella with Kohei at the park they discovered is what leads to their first kiss.
  • When She Smiles: Kohei notes that the first time his heart skips a beat with her is when he first sees her smile.

    Mio Kouzuki

Mio Kouzuki

"...!" I'll do my best!
A first-year student at Kohei's school who encounters him when she accidentally spills hot broth on his uniform. She's mute and carries a large sketchpad with her in order to communicate via writing.
  • Apologizes a Lot: If she messes up, she will not stop bowing in apology until she's told to stop.
  • Berserk Button: One of the few things that makes her angry is trying to touch the ribbon in her hair. The story offers no explanation as to why though.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: Mio Passes out relatively quickly when drinking during Akane's route, justified as she is a petite and underdeveloped 10th grader.
  • Caught the Heart on His Sleeve: Mio tends to hang on Kohei's sleeve, becomes a small plot point later on in her route.
  • Companion Cube: She goes into a panic if she's not carrying the sketchbook that Kohei loaned to her when they were children and will drop everything to return and retrieve it even if it would make more sense to wait until morning or complete an errand first due to it simply being forgotten rather than lost and she knows where to find it. Ultimately this makes her panic when Kohei secretly retrieves the book and leaves a note to apologize for forgetting his original promise more impactful.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Odds are, if she's going from Point A to Point B, she'll trip at least once.
  • Cute Mute: She cannot speak, but that only adds to her adorable nature.
  • Face Doodling: After Mio passes out from drinking too much, Shiiko draws on her face, she wakes up later on and leaves without noticing.
  • Forgotten Childhood Friend: In a twist of the usual situation, it's Kohei who first remembers they're childhood friends after seeing her old sketchbook. It makes him feel guilty every time he sees it for a while.
  • The Glomp: Mio does this to Kohei quite a bit. One time she jumps him in the dark and he attacks her, believing she's a mugger.
  • Here We Go Again!: Her reunion with Kohei in her ending mirrors how she first encountered him during the common route: tripping and dumping ramen broth all over him.
  • Last Moment Together: Mio is rare among the heroines in that she's with Kohei up until the moment of his disappearance as he holds her rather than vanishing when they aren't looking.
  • Literal-Minded: Kohei at one point tells her to "Not move a muscle" while he steps away to buy some food for them. It begins raining and he returns to find her still in that exact spot despite the rain.
  • Like Brother and Sister: How Kohei initially claims to feel about her, but it turns out he was in denial and trying to cope with the fact they'd be separated once he disappears.
  • No Sense of Direction: Kohei repeatedly notes that she has a hard time going anywhere without getting lost.
  • Visible Silence: All the time. Justified considering she is mute.

    Mayu Shiina

Mayu Shiina

"Myuuu~!"
A middle school student that Kohei and Mizuka can run into one morning when she's burying her recently-deceased pet ferret. With little in the way of social skills or common sense, she quickly latches onto the pair.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Treated this way by the game itself. She is the only heroine who doesn't have a required encounter in the common route. Unless the player is aiming for Mizuka's route, they won't even learn she exists.
  • Big Eater: Or so she claims. She always orders far too much food for her to handle, stops eating after about two burgers, and has to take the rest home.
  • Coming of Age Story: Her route is one for her as she grows from a helpless crybaby whose mindset is much closer to that of a child versus a middle-schooler to a capable young woman who is able to overcome her own hardships and inspiring others with her strength.
  • Determinator: Her stepmom reveals that she declared to be doing her best to not give up while under Kohei and Mizuka's wings. It pays off for her in her ending when she's finally able to make a friend her own age after a hellish first month of the new school year.
  • Good Parents: Her stepmom legitimately cares for her, but it's Mayu who doesn't trust her stepmom for a long time.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: She dons a uniform and joins Kohei's class with their teachers apparently being none the wiser.
  • No Social Skills: Almost never says more than a word or two at a time, breaks down crying at the drop of a hat, and doesn't even know how to properly use a knife and fork.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Hamburgers. Taken a step further with the harder-to-obtain Teriyaki burgers.
  • Tough Love: Reaching her ending involves giving this to her and not coddling her when she's facing a tough situation, much to Mizuka's consternation.
  • Vague Age: She never has her age stated. However, we know that she is younger than high school age (likely to be either thirteen or fourteen as it was one year before she graduated from middle school).

Secondary Characters

    Shiiko Yuzuki

Shiiko Yuzuki

Voiced by: Milk Uchimura (PC), Omi Minami (PS1), Akiko Yajima (OVA), Nozomi Nishida (Remake)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oneshiiko.jpg
A girl from another school who is trying to meet up with her friend who goes to the same school as Kohei. She quickly reveals that it's Akane.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Kohei quickly learns that trying to reason with her is an exercise in futility as she's constantly making her own decisions without even allowing any kind of input from him, especially when commandeering his house for her Christmas party.
  • Cuteness Proximity: While she's Akane's friend, she has this immediate reaction upon seeing Mio for the first time.
  • Foreshadowing: The fact that she doesn't remember Akane's other childhood friend is a big hint that said friend disappeared into the Eternal World and everyone forgot about him. The same thing that threatens Kohei.
  • Genki Girl: Cheerful and energetic, the polar opposite of Akane.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: She manages to constantly sneak into Kohei's school and even his class one morning without ever getting caught by any teachers.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Kohei calls her "Bit Character 1" at one point.
  • Speak of the Devil: She invokes this when she describes Kohei as a "Speak of the devil kind of guy" during Akane's ending.
  • Wham Line:
    • "Is this guy a friend of yours, Akane?" forces Kohei to realize he’s beginning to disappear and people are beginning to forget he exists.
    • She gets a second one in Akane's ending with, "...then that guy was still in the same class as you, right?" to showcase the opposite.

Maki Hirose

Voiced by: Milk Uchimura (PC), Tomoko Kawakami (PS1), Yūki Takada (Remake)

The leader of the local "mean girls" group in Kohei's class. She begins a smear campaign against Rumi if Rumi wins the popularity poll.
  • Alpha Bitch: Leads the group of girls who target Rumi and throws any attempts at peaceful resolution back in her face to try and get her to lose her temper and tarnish her class reputation.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: At some point during the Time Skip at the end of her route, it's heavily implied that the two were able to eventually become friends (with Maki being jealous that Rumi has feelings for someone other than her).
  • Karma Houdini: As far as the narrative is concerned, she never faces any comeuppance or gets into trouble for sabotaging Rumi's desk or writing the slandering message on the chalkboard.
  • Smug Snake: She has the aura about her when confronted by both Kohei and Rumi, knowing she's fully capable of getting away with slandering Rumi.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: After a few days of placing single thumbtacks on Rumi's desk chair, she ramps it up one morning to completely cover both the back and seat with thumbtacks, turning it into practically a miniature iron maiden.

    Mamoru Sumii

Mamoru Sumii

Voiced by: Ayumu Nakazawa (PC), Daisuke Sakaguchi (PS1), Kikunosuke Toya (Remake)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/onemamoru.jpg
Kohei's classmate and friend who likes to hang out at his place over the winter break.
  • Expy: Inverted. Youhei Sunohara from CLANNAD is a dead ringer for him.
  • Shipper on Deck: Depending on the route, he'll push Kohei towards confessing to the girl he's closest with (or thinks he is).
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Albeit entirely unintentional, his starting the popularity poll for the girls in his and Kohei's class is what leads to the main source of conflict on Rumi's route if she wins.

    Shun Hikami

Shun Hikami

Voiced by: Arashi Tsunami (PC), Soichiro Hoshi (PS1), Shogo Sakata (Remake)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oneshun.jpg
A young man who joined the same club as Kohei and shares several cryptic conversations with if encountered.
  • Gay Option: Subverted, though at times Hikami may seem like, he really just thinks of Kohei as a close friend. Though he does (as a joke) say that if Kohei wanted to try it with him, he wouldn't object.
  • Secretly Dying: He's hiding an illness that keeps him from attending school very often. Kohei finds his obituary in the paper a month after their final meeting in his route.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Kohei describes his presence as somewhat ethereal with his tendency to seemingly appear and disappear from the club room.
