    Dark
The creator of the game. He is a black humanoid entity that watches over the game world and the player; however, when the game starts malfunctioning, he becomes corrupted and turns malicious.
  • Dark Is Evil: When corrupted by the rose. He is a black humanoid figure that desires to destroy the game world and toy with the player.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He is not inherently evil, but was corrupted by the rose. In the Secret End where he is freed of corruption, he does a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: For most of the game up until the normal ending, he is the one who traps the player inside the game and tries to destroy the game world. The Best End reveals that Nightmare was the one who corrupted him, and he serves as the True Final Boss.
  • Final Boss: The standard one, who must be defeated to achieve the normal ending.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Due to Nightmare's corruption, he desires to destroy the game world.
  • Sequential Boss: His fight has two phases. First, he chases the player around his arena and is invincible; after about a minute has passed, he chases the player around a platforming section.

    Rosey/The Rose
The rose that created the game world. It is actually sentient and the penultimate boss of the game.
  • Artifact of Doom: It can be used create the game worlds, but is also cursed and the source of the glitches and Dark's corruption.
  • Botanical Abomination: At first it starts out a Foul Flower, but in its One-Winged Angel form, Rosey, it turns into a hydra-esque plant beast with five heads, and it retains the Reality Warper abilities and ability to corrupt people.
  • The Dragon: To Dark. It serves him by creating whatever he wishes, presumably having created the enemies the player fights, and is the penultimate boss.
  • Foul Flower: It is a malicious entity that corrupts everything it touches.
  • One-Winged Angel: After defeating it in the first round, it becomes a giant flower-beast with five heads.
  • Reality Warper: It is the thing that creates the game worlds and can make whatever its wielder desires.
  • Sequential Boss: It has two phases. The first phase is much like the Face fights in that it shoots projectiles at you, but also summons mini-tornados. For the second phase, it turns much bigger, and the arena becomes much larger, with Rosey gaining some new attacks.

    Light
A white humanoid and the counterpart to Dark. He appears in the Best End and Secret End to congratulate the player.
  • Big Good: In contrast to Dark, he is friendly to the player.
  • Driven to Madness: Using the Golden Rose turns him into a glitch and drives him nuts.
  • Light Is Good: He is a being of light with a white body who serves as the Big Good.
  • Sequential Boss: First he fights you by himself, with relatively weak attacks. Then Nightmare possesses him and Dark and he becomes faster and harder to dodge.
  • True Final Boss: One of two in the Best End.

    Dark Face
A floating black face that serves as the boss of the Dark Heart room.

    Light Face
A floating white face that serves as the boss of the Light Heart Room.

    Nightmare/The Red Mask
A strange floating red mask and sentient glitch of sorts that is the true antagonist of the series. In My Place, he is behind the curse on the rose and has been using the player to overthrow Dark and Light, desiring their power for himself. In A Dark Place, he traps the player in his own game world and challenges them to escape. In A Dark Place 2, his curse has spread and wrecked the old world, and he is still out to get the player.
  • Big Bad: Of the series, as he is the source of the curse that is causing the corruption and glitches, and the one behind the corruption of Dark.
  • Eldritch Abomination: He is an entity that brings corruption and glitches wherever he goes, and is also a Reality Warper who can even access the player's computer.
  • Evil Laugh: Rather subdued compared to most, but he sometimes lets out a dark chuckle. In A Dark Place, one of the hacks he performs on your computer is to open a file which repeats his chuckle nonstop.
  • Evil Mask: The form he takes in My Place is that of a floating red mask. He never directly possesses anyone, but it does corrupt Dark through the rose.
  • Final Boss: Of the secret route in A Dark Place, in which he will chase you around the room and you must shoot at him. The two normal endings lack any sort of boss fight.
  • Final Boss Preview: In A Dark Place, if you fall from the train room in Chapter 1, it leads to you waking up in a rectangular room and Nightmare chasing you, killing you unavoidably. The secret route ends with you in that same room, but armed with three roses and able to fight back.
  • Final-Exam Boss: In My Place, his battle in the Secret End consists of him adopting the attacks and forms of every other boss in the game, with him switching form every time he is hit.
  • Floating Mask: His Red Mask form in My Place.
  • Flying Face: He is a floating face, though exactly what kind of face changes. In My Place, he is a red mask with a Slasher Smile. In A Dark Place, he spends the first two Chapters and the secret chapter in a form resembling a white frog head, while in the second half of the game, he becomes a big floating skull, which carries over to A Dark Place 2.
  • Fusion Dance: In the Best End, he fuses with Dark and Light to become a humanoid creature.
  • Madness Mantra: If he catches you in A Dark Place, the phrase “I FOUND YOU I FOUND YOU I FOUND YOU I FOUND YOU” will fill up the whole screen until he crashes the game.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He was the one who corrupted Dark using the rose. He takes on a more direct antagonist role in the sequels.
  • One-Winged Angel: In My Place, his humanoid form is much more powerful than his mask form, as he fused with Dark and Light to create it and can move and attack fast. In A Dark Place, his skull form that he takes halfway through is even more powerful than his frog-face form and is implied to be his “true” form.
  • Reality Warper: Much like the rose, he can warp the game worlds to his liking, induce glitches, and even hack the player's computer.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His humanoid form and both forms he takes in A Dark Place have bright red eyes to emphasize his maliciousness.
  • True Final Boss: Of My Place. In the Best End, he possesses Light and Dark to attack you, and in the Secret End route, which leads to the Golden Ending, he is the last battle.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: In the Best End, after having manipulated the player into killing Dark and Light so he could fuse with them, he decides he no longer needs the player and tries to kill them. In the Secret End, when the player decides not to kill Dark but go after him instead, he changes his plans and decides to kill the player for getting in his way.
