Rudeus in his past life
Rudeus in his early adult years

"...I know I have to grow up right away. And in order to do that, I'll have to make a bunch of mistakes, grieve over them, and change— slowly, gradually."

The protagonist of the series. In his previous life, he was an unemployed middle-aged Japanese man, who was eventually kicked out by his siblings for his non-productiveness. He ends up saving some high schoolers from a truck but is killed in the process. When he awoke, he was a baby in another world and decided to not waste the second life he was given.

  • Above the Influence: Subverted. After he and Eris finally make it back to the Fedoa region after the Mana Catastrophe, Eris receives the news about her parents and grandfather all dying because of the Mana Catastrophe. That night, Eris goes to Rudeus' bedroom and asks him to sleep with her, disregarding that they promised to do it until he turned fifteen. Rudeus is reluctant as he feels he and Eris shouldn't rush their relationship when Eris is hurting because of the loss of her family. But Eris pushes him down and whispers "she wants to have his kittens" to his ear. Rudeus then can't keep resisting anymore and has sex with Eris.
  • Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder: Eris leaves Rudeus without a word immediately after their first night together, planning to get stronger and become good enough to marry him. Unfortunately, her goodbye letter only told Rudeus they "weren't a good match" and Rudeus assumes he got dumped. In the years he's separated from Eris, Rudeus marries Sylphy and Roxy. It's not until his future self reveals Eris' true intentions for leaving that Rudeus learns she never stopped loving him. Rudeus then invites Eris to become his third wife and she accepts.
  • Academic Athlete: He trains his body daily while being quite an academic scholar when he goes to school and researches.
  • Action Dad: He's a mage that rivals Laplace in magic capacity. He eventually has children with his three wives.
  • Affectionate Nickname: His parents shorten his name to "Rudy".
  • The Aloner: Rudy enforced his role as a solo adventurer after the events of Volume 6, joining various parties but never on a permanent basis. Part of the reason is to spread his renown as an adventurer hoping it will help him track down his mother Zenith, but also because with how his previous party, the Dead End, broke up.
  • Anti-Magic: He eventually learns how to use [Disturb Magic] to prevent enemy spellcasting.
  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses his left hand during the quest to rescue Zenith. He replaces it with a magical prosthetic made by Zanoba, but gets it fully restored by Orsted.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: In the prologue of the web novel, when Rudeus is explaining the Dark and Troubled Past that made him who he is today, he says that if he were a beautiful girl, the bullies that chained him up naked would probably have forced themselves onto him and threatened him into sexual slavery, and then adds, "unfortunately, I was a fat, disgusting nerd".
  • Berserk Button: He's outraged when he finds out Lynia and Pursena broke his handmade Roxy figurine, considering it an act of blasphemy against his "goddess".
  • Big Brother Instinct: He's very protective of his two younger sisters, Norn and Aisha. He gets pissed when he thinks Norn became a Hikikomori due to bullying at school, until he discovers the actual reason is her inferiority complex towards him.
  • Big Eater: The light novels describe adventurers as being able to eat double or even triple the portions of average people, then goes on to state Rudy ate perhaps twenty percent more than most people, even when in an area where food prices caused most to tighten their belts.
  • Big Man on Campus: At Ranoa Magic Academy. On top of his previous reputation as an adventurer, he starts getting recognition by defeating Silent Fitz and 'taming' Lynia and Pursena. His reputation rises even further after his fight with Demon King Badigadi.
  • Black Mage: Attack magic is his specialty. Though he is decent at healing, he is not nearly as accomplished at it.
  • Brainy Baby: Thanks to inheriting Past-Life Memories, Rudeus begins his reincarnation as a baby, but has all of the life experience of his previous self, so his narration is full of snarky commentary. At first, he wasn't even aware he reincarnated at all, and assumed as a newborn that he was too injured to move.
Rudeus: Raising my body, I tried to ask, "where am I, and who are you?" Even though I stayed indoors, it's not like I was especially bad at communicating, so I thought I could at least do that. And yet, what came out of my mouth was a sound that could not be distinguished from moaning or heavy breathing. I couldn't even move my body. I felt my fingers and arms move, but I couldn't raise the upper half of my body. Perhaps, it's the aftermath of the accident...?
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Deconstructed in his previous life with realistic consequences. His past life was aware that he was smart enough to succeed in life, even after becoming a traumatized Hikikomori as he could still look for ways to make money without leaving his house. Yet, he chose to indulge in self-pity and forced his family to take care of him until his parents died and his brothers threw him out of the house.
  • Bullied into Depression: In his previous life, he became a Hikikomori after some high school bullies publicly humiliated him by stripping him naked, tying him up to the school gate and showing his pictures to the entire school. The trauma was so severe that he couldn't gather the courage to leave his house for about eighteen years until his family kicked him out.
  • Bully Hunter: One of his redeeming qualities prior to Character Development. He hates bullies and chases off the kids that were harassing Sylphy. Deconstructed in his previous life; a rude upperclassman cut in front of him during lunch period, and being the "moral upstanding person" he is, intended to give said upperclassman a piece of his mind, leading to tragic results as latter was well-known to be a dangerous person in his "shitty high school".
  • Byronic Hero: Rudeus is cynical, intelligent, somewhat arrogant, plagued by self-loathing, and determined to make his second life count.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: He refers to Paul and Zenith by name in his narration, but "Father" and "Mother" when speaking to them.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: He tells his father Paul off when, after he saves Sylphiette from three bullies and one of their mothers claims he punched them, Paul gives Rudy no chance to explain himself, calling him out on not being willing to trust his word despite being a good son for so long, and explains what really happened in a backhanded manner that implies that he's Hypocrite for telling him to help the weak yet trying to discipline him for doing just that. This actually gets to Paul, and when Rudy learns that Sylphiette is a girl while trying to get her to bath with him after a rainstorm, he scolds him a lot more gently.
  • Character Catchphrase: The word riajuu (リア充), meaning a person who is successful in real life as opposed to offline, is his — often bitterly spouted when he thinks about other people having sex. After Eris throws herself at him when they're young teenagers and they have Their First Time, he crows triumphantly that he finally is one.
  • Character Development: He started his new life with the resolution of not wasting it like he did his first, but it takes him quite some time for him to shake off the worst aspects of his vices and become an empathetic and proactive adult.
  • Chick Magnet: He attracts women at all stages of his life post-reincarnation. To his credit, Rudeus only concentrates on his relationship with his three wives; everything else is a distraction.
  • Child Mage: Able to use chantless magic by the time he is 3, thanks to having the mental capacities of a full-grown man.
  • Child Prodigy:
    • How he appears to everyone else. He managed to perform chantless magic before three, learn intermediate magic at three, become a Saint-ranked Water Magician at 5, become a tutor at 7, etc. Of course, what none of them know is that he's actually a 30-something Otaku with a little kid's body and a little kid's ability to learn and pick up on things.
    • Even in his previous life, Rudeus was considered a bright student in elementary school (albeit more inclined to games and sports than academics), learned to build his own PC after joining a computer club in middle school and by consulting tech magazines, and by his own admission, is the only one in his family who could write a single line of code.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: He starts romancing Sylphy and Eris when they're under 10 years old. Both become his wives when they're adults.
  • Childlike Voice: His adult self appears to keep the same voice he had when he was a child.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Despite his horndog nature being a defining aspect of his younger self, Rudeus refuses to sleep with other women after his marriage, even though all of his three wives are perfectly okay with him doing so. His third wife even offers Rudeus the "use" of the household beastkin servants, who she has already made her own mini-harem, only for Rudeus to refuse. Rudeus enjoys sex very much, but he only wants it with the women he's truly in love with and committed to.
  • Chuunibyou: In the web novel's prologue, Rudeus claims to have had this when he was in his first year of high school.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: His Demon Eye allows him to see seconds into the future, which he uses to predict his opponent's next move. But it's less effective against opponents that rely on Counter Attacks or are simply too fast/skilled for him to keep up.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Downplayed because Rudy limits it to his inner thoughts, but learning that Luke and Eris were supposed to end up together in all other timelines where Rudy doesn't exist made him even warier of the guy than before.
  • Creepy Child: Lilia outright namedrops this trope in Chapter 2 of the web novel, talking about how he never cried as a baby and started exploring all over the house as soon as he could crawl, among other, more troubling behaviors like his perverted grins. She even briefly thinks little Rudy is possessed.
  • Creepy Uncle: In the web novel, he was masturbating to pictures of his niece when he was kicked out of the house.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: In both encounters against Orsted. The first time, he manages to graze him with a Rock Bullet. The second time, he forces Orsted to fight him seriously.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His previous life was far from easy. While he was in High School, he was bullied relentlessly, a particularly vivid memory of his being when his classmates stripped him naked, took photos and tied him to the school gate, calling him "limp dick" the entire time. This led to him becoming a NEET who was afraid of going outside, a fear that carries over when he's reincarnated, to the point that he refused to attend his parent's funeral. This led to him being forcibly kicked out by his siblings, leading to his death when he tried saving three high schoolers from a truck.
  • The Defroster: In her first meeting with Rudeus, Eris insults him and slaps him in the face because she hated that a boy younger than her would be her teacher. Once Rudeus helps saving her from her kidnappers and she starts learning from him, she grows to admire and love him, which greatly improves her behavior in general.
  • Determinator: In order to protect his loved ones, Rudeus will keep fighting to his dying breath, no matter if it's impossible to win. In his fight against Orsted, nothing Rudeus throws at the Dragon God leaves any lasting damage, not even Rudeus casting a Fantastic Nuke works. Yet, Rudeus doesn't lose the will to fight after he loses both his arms, to the point he tries using his remaining strength to pull a Taking You with Me, but Orsted cancels his magic attack and leaves him no other choice but to join forces against Hitogami.
  • Dirty Kid: Rudeus inherits the Past-Life Memories of his 34-year-old NEET self when he reincarnates, so he begins his life in the Six-Faced World with a perverted personality.
Rudeus (aged 6 months): After that, they put me to bed in the next room over, moved to the floor above me, and went right to work making my little brother or sister. I know that because I can hear the moaning and creaking of the bed even when they go to the second floor, those damn normies......
  • Disease Bleach: During the battle of Orstred, Rudeus' hair turns white due to mana strain, although he's able to restore his normal hair color.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: His favored type of spells along with water.
  • The Dreaded: To the students of the magical academy and everyone who realizes how powerful he actually is.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: He gets into a drunken brawl with Soldat after Sara breaks up with him due to his erectile dysfunction.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: In the manga, his eyes lose their shine after Eris leaves him. It takes years for him to recover.
  • Easily Forgiven: Sylphy surprisingly doesn't take it that hard that Rudeus cheated on her with Roxy, because Rudeus came clean to her about it and she doesn't mind Rudeus taking another wife as she finds that better than him having an affair behind her back.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: He's suspicious of Hitogami from the moment the latter starts showing up in his dreams and is reluctant to follow his advice at first. In contrast, he feels at ease with Orsted and casually speaks to him even though Eris and Ruijierd were paralyzed in fear when they saw Orsted. As it turns out, Hitogami did have evil intentions by advising Rudeus and was planning to kill the pregnant Roxy the whole time. Orsted ends up becoming Rudeus' biggest ally against Hitogami.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: His Eye of Foresight, given to him by Kishirika, has an extra circle around the pupil.
  • Expository Pronoun: He refers to himself as the manly "ore" in his past life and inner monologues, while using the more youthful "boku" when speaking. He eventually starts using "ore" in his speech when he's older.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While his perversion tendencies would fit in with the good nobles of his current life, rape, pedophilia (besides the fact that he was a 34-year-old man in a young boy's body), and incest are definitely out of those categories.
  • Eye Scream: Kishirika crushes his right eye and replaces it with the Eye of Foresight.
  • False Rape Accusation: After Lilia gets pregnant from her affair with Paul, Zenith was willing to let her travel back to her hometown right after giving birth, despite the bad weather conditions and the fact that the journey would take a month. To save Lilia's life, Rudeus accuses Paul of raping Lilia, even though Lilia was the one who seduced Paul. This makes Zenith sympathize with Lilia and she agrees to let Lilia stay as part of the family.
  • Family Man: He never cared about his family in his past life, to the point he didn't even bother attending his parents' funeral. Rudeus learns the value of the family he finds in his new life and protecting his family becomes one of his biggest motivations especially after Paul's death.
  • Fatal Flaw: Whenever he emotionally hits rock bottom to a very devastating point, he degenerates into a self-centered and depraved Jerkass, leading to gradually self-inflicting consequences for himself and his loved ones. This is what caused him to ruin everything for himself and his personal relationships in his previous life, and in the Bad Future where Hitogami succeeded in killing Roxy.
  • Fat Bastard: Rudeus weighed over 100 kilograms (220 pounds) in his past life, where he was a cynical, perverted creep who spent the vast majority of his life mooching off his parents. He didn't even have the decency to attend their funeral when they died, which gets him kicked out of the house. In the web novel, he was worse — he was also a self-professed pedophile, as he admits to masturbating to what he calls "uncensored loli pics"... of his niece.
  • Fat Slob: In his past life, he was heavyset after a sedentary lifestyle of 20 years living off of his family and contributing nothing back. Though he mentions when explaining his Dark and Troubled Past that he was a "fat, disgusting nerd" in high school, too.
  • The First Cut Is the Deepest: Eris leaves him right after they sleep together and her letter fails to explain she left because she felt she wasn't good enough for him. The misunderstanding that he has dumped causes such a shock for Rudeus that he's left with erectile dysfunction that ruins any other possible relationship until he gets together with Sylphy three years later.
  • First-Person Smartass: He's polite enough on the outside, but on the inside, Rudeus's Inner Monologue is full of snark. Take this instance where he hits his head as a toddler.
Zenith: ...Hoh, it looks like you're safe.
Rudeus: (thinking) When you hit your head, it's better if you don't move it much, ma'am.
  • Fitness Nut: After his separation from Eris and resulting ED, Rudeus copes by redirecting his energy into training his body with regular exercise.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: Invoked. Rudeus uses keigo as part of his Adorably Precocious Child act, since he wants to be seen as polite and well-behaved to make up for his bad behavior in his past life. Soldat notices his polite behavior and speech are an act, and he pushes Rudeus to be more casual when speaking to him.
  • Formerly Fat: He was fat in his previous life, having spent nearly 20 years locked inside his room and playing with his computer all day. In his new life, he takes better care of his body to stay fit.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: As traumatic as the bullying he suffered in his old life was, it doesn't excuse him spending two decades as a NEET and leeching off his parents. His siblings put up with him while their parents were alive, but threw him out after their parents died, whether because they were less tolerant of him or whether his masturbating to porn (or, in the web novels, pictures of his niece) instead of attending the funeral was the last straw for them. Rudeus agrees he's wasted his life, which is why he's determined to make the most of his new life.
  • Future Me Scares Me: Rudeus is disgusted at what he's become in the timeline where he got screwed over by Hitogami's trap, to say the least.
  • Geek Physiques: In his past life, he was a Fat Slob of an Otaku, even when he was in high school.
  • Generation Xerox: Like his father, Paul did before him, Rudeus cheats on his first wife and later marries the mistress he had a tryst with. Luckily for Rudeus, Sylphy isn't a believer in monogamous marriage, unlike Zenith, which allows Roxy to be welcomed as Rudeus' second wife without Rudeus needing to resort to the trickery he used to convince Zenith to let Lilia stay with the family.
  • Genre Savvy: Because he is a former Otaku, he knows what tropes to expect when he becomes the protagonist of a Reincarnate in Another World story.
  • Glass Cannon: His raw magic power is larger than even Demon God La Place's. However, he cannot wear Touki which makes him quite vulnerable if anyone actually manages to land a hit.
  • Glory Seeker: During his phase as a solo adventurer, he would join with various parties taking on dangerous missions with the purpose of growing his renown to find his missing mother. It eventually pays off when Elinalise finds him thanks to said renown and delivers favorable news about Zenith.
  • Guile Hero: Even if he's already a powerful mage, Rudeus also relies on his wits to get the upper hand on his enemies. More prominent during his time in the Demon Continent when he has yet to fully hone his skills, where he's the "negotiator" of the Dead End party, smoothing things out with locals so they won't cause too much trouble.
  • Happily Married: He marries Sylphy, Roxy and Eris who all love him deeply and Rudeus loves them just as much in return. Discounting how his marriage with Roxy was his way of resolving the affair he had with her while married to Sylphy, he's also a very faithful husband for someone who married three women, refusing to sleep with anyone but his three wives even though they wouldn't mind it.
  • Hates Being Alone: In his past life, he didn't make any friends due to being a hikikomori and his own family threw him out into the streets once they got sick of him leeching off of them. Rudeus wants to be surrounded by family and friends in his new life. After Ruijerd and Eris part ways with him, Rudeus finds himself all alone for the first time since he reincarnated. His failure to maintain new relationships, mainly romantic ones because of his erectile dysfunction, nearly drives him to kill himself until Soldat befriends him and invites him to join his party. It's notable that his worst depressive states are the result of him losing someone he's attached to, either through what he believes to be abandonment or them dying.
  • He Is All Grown Up: When he finally reunites with Roxy after many years, Roxy is amazed to see that her cute little student Rudeus grew up into a handsome young man who is the embodiment of the man of her dreams.
  • Hereditary Hairstyle: Like Paul, Rudeus eventually wore his hair in a ponytail.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • The shock of Eris leaving him after they sleep together causes Rudeus to briefly go back to his shellshocked former self prior to his reincarnation. He only manages to function again thanks to remembering Zenith is still missing and he needs to find her.
    • Paul's death sends Rudeus into a serious depression. He refuses to eat or leave his room and only responds with "oh" when talked to. He can recover only thanks to Roxy comforting him with sex.
  • Hidden Depths: In his past life, he was quite good at caring for babies. He only gets to show this briefly with Norn and Aisha before he is taken away to the Boreas Greyrats.
  • Hikikomori: In his past life, he never left the house for 20 years because of a traumatic incident in high school. Even after dying, his agoraphobia carries over to his next life. It takes Roxy's help for him to overcome it.
  • Humble Hero: Having memories of his previous life where he was a NEET who never did anything good for society or his family, Rudeus keeps a very humble attitude despite his gift for magic and amazing accomplishments. Even when he's made it into Rank 7 of the Seven Great Powers after defeating the North God, he felt he was still some way off without the aid of his tools and meticulous preparation.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: On paper, he's only supposed to support Princess Ariel in the succession crisis, but Rudeus winds up becoming the common denominator of the various factors that allowed her to survive, let alone win, in the end. Through him, Ariel manages to get the backing of both Perugius and Orsted, have powerful swordswomen Ghyslaine and Eris as bodyguards (not to mention Rudeus himself), and with his future self's diary figure out how to defame the prince's biggest supporter, Minister Darius.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: While he judges his father for cheating on Zenith with Lilia and previously sexually assaulting her, Rudeus acknowledges that he has more than a little in common with him.
Rudeus: [internal monologue] Paul's a scumbag, all right, but we speak the same language. What am I now, 40-something? I was hot garbage back in my day, too; I can't judge.
  • I Have No Son!: A sibling example in his backstory, where his two older brothers and sister barge into his room after their parents' funeral, stating that they're cutting ties to him, followed by his precious PC smashed and a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown when Rudeus retaliated.
  • I'll Pretend I Didn't Hear That: Rudy walks in on Zanoba's private time with his dolls. After a break they both pretend the incident never occurred.
  • I Never Got Any Letters: During his reunion with Paul after the mass teleportation incident, Paul gets mad at Rudeus for not reading the message he sent to the guilds to inform Rudeus that Zenith, Lilia, and Aisha are all missing. Since Rudeus was too focused on getting back to human civilization with Eris for the past year, checking for a message from his family at the guild didn't even cross his mind until then.
  • I Will Find You: After the disbandment of the Dead End party, Rudeus spends the following two years trying to look for the missing Zenith's whereabouts.
  • Idiot Hair: He has an ahoge sticking up on the top of his head.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Downplayed. Midway through punishing Linia and Pursena for destroying the figurine of Roxy, he realizes he's capable of undoing the damage they caused. His anger mostly dissipated with this, he still keeps them confined for almost a full day and even consults Fitz as to an appropriate punishment for their misdeeds.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: His name can be translated as either "Rudeus" or "Ludeus" since the letter L is replaced with R in Japanese.
  • Innocently Insensitive: After getting reunited with Paul after traveling through the Demon Continent thanks to the teleportation incident, Rudeus tries to lighten the mood by embellishing on the "fun" adventures he had over the past year and a half. Because of how Paul normally is, Rudeus assumed that embellishing like that would be the best way to break the ice. Unbeknownst to Rudeus, Paul had been running himself ragged searching for his torn family and was in the middle of a drunken depression, so Rudeus ended up slamming his Berserk Button.
  • Interrupted Suicide: After he accidentally insults Sara in front of her and she slaps him for it, Rudeus tries to stab himself in the throat. Soldat kicks the knife away and invites him to join his party so he isn't all alone.
  • Interspecies Romance: He falls in love with Roxy who is a very humanoid demon and Sylphy who has elven blood.
  • It Was a Gift: His signature Magic Staff, the Arrogant Water Dragon King (Aqua Heartia), was gifted to him by the Boreas Greyrats on his 10th birthday. He contemplates selling it during his journey on the Demon Continent, as Ruijierd's boat ticket is way too expensive, but Ruijierd talks him out of it because he knows how much that staff means to Rudeus and Eris.
  • Jaded Washout: How he begins the story — a depressed, burned-out, perverted Hikikomori not meant to be sympathized with in the least.
  • Kissing Cousins: One of his love interests and eventual wives is his distant cousin Eris.
  • Lascivious Beauty Mark: Rudeus has a mole underneath his left eye and regularly pervs on his three love interests who all end up in a polygamous marriage with him.
  • Like a God to Me: All of his love interests look up to him as a genius with near godlike power. In turn, he worships Roxy (and her panties).
  • Likes Older Women: Most of his love interests are years older than him. In Eris' case, she's only two years older, but Roxy is 34 years older than him. Played with, however, in that Rudeus himself is 34 years older than his body due to Past-Life Memories — accounting for that, Eris is actually 32 years younger than he is, and Roxy is exactly the same age.
  • Living Emotional Crutch:
    • Paul forces Rudeus and Sylphy apart after realizing she was becoming too dependent on him. Sylphy does become more confident and independent in the years she's apart from Rudeus.
    • Eris also becomes dependent on him, especially during their adventures after the Mana Catastrophe though she has a similar realization and leaves to become a better woman for him so she can protect him instead of only letting him protect her.
    • Rudeus is Nanahoshi's only hope that they can find a way to return her to Japan. In the bad timeline where Rudeus becomes obsessed with revenge on Hitogami, Nanahoshi kills herself as no one else could help her find a way back home.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Rudeus and Eris are teleported to the Demon Continent which is located at the other side of the human continent. When he reunites with his father Paul, a fight happens between them as it turns out Rudeus and Eris weren't the only ones who got teleported, but the entire population of Fedoa territory got involved in the incident too. Rudeus wasn't aware of that until Paul told him about it, making Paul mad at him. While Rudeus admits that he didn't think there could have been more people who got teleported, he had no real means to gather information about it when he was teleported all the way across the planet in a world that doesn't have TV or internet to deliver the news immediately. Also, surviving in a desert filled with monsters and returning to civilization was Rudeus' highest priority.
  • The Loins Sleep Tonight: He suffers from erectile dysfunction for three years after Eris leaves him right after they have sex and the trauma of it is keeping him from performing out of fear of being dumped again. Thanks to Sylphy and a potent aphrodisiac, his problem is fixed.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: As a teenager, he lets his hair grow out past his shoulders and ties into a low ponytail.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: He does all sort of perverted stuff to his love interests, like stealing their underwear and peeping at them when they're bathing. That never stops the girls from falling in love with him since he has redeeming traits despite his lechery. Even his own younger half-sister, who initially disliked him for being a pervert, ends up adoring him after she sees how cool he is.
  • Love at First Punch: His first meeting with Eris had her slapping him in the face because she hated having a tutor younger than her. He gave her a soft slap back to reprimand her, but that only made her straight-up punch him.
  • Magical Eye: Two; one can see a short distance into the future and the other lets him see far away into the distance.
  • Making a Splash: He practiced water magic since he was a toddler and became a Saint-ranked Water Magician at 5 years old.
  • Meaningful Name:
  • My Greatest Second Chance: An Otaku Hikikomori NEET who was reincarnated in another world and kept the memories of his previous life. He decides to make this life count from the beginning.
  • Nerds Are Virgins: In his past life, Rudeus was a perverted Otaku who had never had sex, much to his dismay.
  • Nerds Are Pervs: In his previous life, Rudeus was a Brilliant, but Lazy Otaku, later Neet and Hikikomori, who leeched off of his parents for ten years after being bullied at school. After his parents die, his brothers kick him out after they find him masturbating over porn (or, in the web novel, pictures of his niece) instead of attending their funeral or showing any remorse for their death. He still retains a lot of his perverted qualities after he's reincarnated in another world, but he grows out of his worst qualities, becoming a Lovable Sex Maniac and later a Chivalrous Pervert, only perving on his three wives.
  • No Name Given: The audience never learns his original Japanese name.
  • No Social Skills: He frequently struggles in social situations because he was a Hikikomori in his previous life and didn't have a proper conversation with anyone, not even his own family, for over 20 years. Most of his interactions with his love interests are based on what he learned from playing dating sims and it does work in his favor often, but sometimes not so much.
  • Not Me This Time: Rudeus does have a record of being a Panty Thief, but while in Ranoa Academy, he was accused of stealing undergarments when he was not at fault in both cases. The first time, he picked panties up after they fell from the girls' dorms without checking what it was first. Rudeus nearly got lynched before Fitz, the actual owner, arrived to vouch for his innocence. For the second crime, the culprits were Lynia and Pursena, who stole various freshmen's undergarments as a present to Rudeus, and he was horrified when he found out, especially when one of the victims was his sister Norn.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Rudeus repeatedly thinks of the similarities he shared with his father Paul. He frequently snarks about his father's sexual deviancies in his head but also acknowledges if he were in the same position he'd likely have made the same choices. This is also what helps Rudeus forgive his father when they fight after reuniting from the Mana Catastrophe incident. When Rudeus looks Paul in the eye the next day he sees him looking like a shell of his former self just like Rudeus in his previous life when he was a Hikikomori Rudeus remembers how in his previous life, in a bit of depression he lashed out at his Only Friend and never worked up the courage to try and apologize to his friend.
  • Odd Name, Normal Nickname: Rudeus is called "Rudy" for short.
  • Oh, Crap!: Rudeus has a panic attack when he met Nanahoshi again, because, last he remembered about her, she was in the company of Orsted, and Rudy believed that Nanahoshi being in Ranoa Academy means that the guy must be nearby. Nanahoshi had to tell him that she parted ways with the Dragon God when she enrolled at the Academy.
  • Omniglot: In his youth, he picks up several languages besides the common tongue of humans, like the demon language and the beast tongue. This skill would prove useful in his adventures.
  • One-Man Army: Rudy is abnormally powerful for his age and by the time he is a full-grown adult. He singlehandedly killed a Red Dragon, a feat previously only possible for multiple parties. He also helped a Shirone Army detachment by using his magic to rearrange the geography of the battlefield for their advantage.
  • The One Thing I Don't Hate About You: Rudeus considers Paul an absolute scumbag since he kinda sucks at parenting and cheats on his wife with the maid. Yet, Paul is a talented swordsman and does try to set an example of a responsible man for his son, something Rudeus respects despite Paul's other flaws.
  • Panty Thief: He stole one of Roxy's panties and calls them a "holy relic" of his "goddess". He prays to the panties every day even!
  • Papa Wolf: He will do anything to protect his family, even invent magic that doesn't exist or go against literal gods.
  • Paradox Person: The boy named "Rudeus Greyrat" never existed in any of Orsted's previous time loops. Orsted theorizes Paul did conceive a child with Zenith, but the baby was stillborn. The reason why Rudeus exists in the current timeline is that his soul snuck into the rupture between dimensions created by the Rewind Miko from the future. His soul then found its way to the body of Zenith's newborn baby.
  • Parental Incest: Subverted. When Rudeus is a baby, he considers it "just the greatest" to drink Zenith's milk because she's a beautiful woman, but he doesn't feel anything at all from it — even when he expects to, given his usual personality. He briefly wonders whether that's because she's his mom, or because he's so physically immature.
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: After Eris leaves him right after they have sex for the first time, Rudeus blames himself, thinking that he must have done something wrong or been really bad at sex for Eris to not want him anymore (though, she still loves him and he just misunderstood her poorly worded letter). As a result, his subconscious fear of intimacy prevents him from performing when he tries to have sex with Sara and then, he avoids getting close to women to prevent the same thing from happening again. Later on, Sylphy helps him overcome it by staying with him after they have sex.
  • Past-Life Memories: Rudeus inherits all the memories from his previous life when he is reincarnated into the Six-Faced World. His main motivation, now that he has a new life, is not to spend it full of regrets.
  • The Peeping Tom: Tried to spy on Eris undressing and bathing but Ruijierd would not allow it. In the manga, he also sneaked in on Roxy while she's fresh out of the bath, but he didn't get caught.
  • Powered Armor: The Magic Armor series, developed with the help of Zanoba.
  • Pragmatic Hero: He may do adventuring that ends up saving lives, but Rudeus is firmly in the Good Is Not Nice camp, often manipulating those around him to get beneficial outcomes and being a particular kind of Chivalrous Pervert that isn't supposed to be funny and endearing. Nonetheless, he refuses to let innocents die if he can help it, and has an aversion to killing other people in general.
  • Precocious Crush: His feelings for Roxy start this way. They first meet when he's three years old and she's in her thirties (although she looks like a 13-year-old). Rudeus is instantly smitten with her cute loli features and outright tells her he likes her. Roxy can't return his feelings at the time for obvious reasons, but does give him the chance to confess again if he still wants her in ten years. They get married soon after they reunite when Rudeus is an adult.
  • Private Tutor: To earn the money needed for him and Sylphy to go to the Ranoa Magic Academy, Paul gets Rudeus a job as the live-in tutor of his distant cousin Eris, a problem child who made all her previous tutors quit.
  • Promotion to Parent: Paul sends Aisha and Norn to Rudeus at Sharia City because the search for Zenith is taking Paul's group to dangerous lands. For his part, Rudeus actually tries to be a good guardian to his sisters.
  • Red Baron: After the disbanding of the Dead End party, Rudeus joins multiple parties to spread his name and becomes nicknamed "Quagmire," after his Signature Move.
  • Redemption Equals Death: He was a big Fat Slob before being reborn as Rudeus, skipping his parents' funeral to stay home and watch porn, an act that led to him getting kicked out of his house with just the clothes on his back. Shortly after that, he saves three highschoolers from getting hit by a truck, at the cost of his life.
  • Reincarnate in Another World: Rudy originates from Earth. He was hit by a truck when trying to save some teenagers and his soul was sent to the fantasy world where he can get a chance to start over.
  • Residual Self-Image: When Rudeus meets Hitogami in his dreams, Rudeus perceives himself as the overweight thirty-something Japanese man he was before he died, rather than his reincarnated self.
  • Sex for Solace: In the battle against the hydra in the Lapan dungeon, Paul dies protecting Rudeus and although they successfully rescue Zenith, being trapped inside a crystal for years has rendered her to a catatonic state. Grieving his parents' tragedies, Rudeus has sex with Roxy who offered herself to him in an attempt to comfort him, despite knowing he's already married to Sylphy.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Rudeus and his father Paul both have a fetish for large breasts. Both also end up getting into threesomes. Paul got into a threesome with Ghyslaine and Elinalise, Rudy got into one with Sylphy and Roxy. Rudeus would later one up his father by having a foursome with all three of his eventual wives.
  • Shock and Awe: After learning the King Rank Water spell "Lightning", he manages to refine it in order to be able to use electricity without needing to first create a whole thunderstorm.
  • Signature Move: The Quagmire spell (which is where his Red Baron originated from) and Stone Bullet/Cannon.
  • Something We Forgot: Rudeus went to his friends for encouragement before leaving for Begaritto Continent...but had a nagging feeling that he forgot to include someone. Rudy only realizes his mistake when he returned months later, because Ariel lodged some complaints for getting Locked Out of the Loop about his departure.
  • Squishy Wizard: He did undergo some sword training under Paul and Ghyslaine early in his life, but he was never as good at it as Eris and couldn't take lessons anymore after the mass teleportation disaster. Although he's physically weak compared to Eris and Ruijierd, his voiceless spellcasting and high mana capacity that is on par with Laplace more than makes up for it. It's revealed he couldn't clad his body in Battle Aura, which was vital to a close-range combatant.
  • Stock Light-Novel Hero: Dying on Earth saving a couple of high schoolers from an incoming truck, Rudeus Greyrat was reborn in a new world with the loving family he always wanted, as well as an immense amount of magical capabilities to become the World's Strongest Man (well, he makes it to the TOP 10, it still counts) and gains himself a harem. In an interesting twist, it's his descendants that are the Chosen One that will save the world. Something of an Unbuilt Trope as well, as it takes decades for him to become a true hero of this type, and instead of originally being a handsome dark-haired young man, he was a 34-year-old overweight, ugly NEET that masturbated to what is heavily implied to be child porn, specifically of his niece bathing, and it also takes decades for him to get over this level of perversion. In fact, as a result of being friends with the creator of Re:Zero, the latter's author, Tappei Nagatsuki, and Mushoku Tensei's author traded ideas back and forth, hence leading to similar levels of Deconstructions of the trope before they became solidified.
  • Stress Vomit: While reading the diary his future self left behind, Rudeus is so horrified and shocked by its contents that he throws up.
  • Supporting Protagonist: While the readers do follow his story, ultimately his role is to support Orsted in his quest to defeat Hitogami.
  • Sweet on Polly Oliver: He developed a crush on Sylphy when she was disguised as a boy. With the requisite "He's a guy, damn it!"
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: He sleeps with Roxy when he's separated from his wife Sylphy for months, but this happened because sex was the only way Roxy could pull him out of his depressed state after Paul died protecting him. When he returns home, Rudeus tells Sylphy about Roxy and asks her to let him take Roxy as his second wife. Sylphy, being the all-forgiving soul she is, forgives Rudeus' cheating and welcomes Roxy into the family.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: When Rudeus first meets Orsted, the Dragon God tries to kill him the moment Rudeus admits to knowing Hitogami, gives a brutal beating to Ruijierd and Eris for defending Rudeus and punches a hole through Rudeus' chest which would have killed him if Nanahoshi didn't convince Orsted to spare Rudeus. Despite all this, Rudeus can't help but feel bad for Orsted when Hitogami tells him that Orsted has a curse that makes everyone hate and fear him.
  • Talented, but Trained: Retaining memories of his previous life comes in handy and he has Laplace Factor. Though Orsted stated if he hadn't trained it, he wouldn't have gotten very far.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: He has a crush on his magic teacher Roxy. She eventually reciprocates once they meet again when he's older. He was also a magic teacher to Sylphy and an academic teacher to Eris, both of who are his love interests too.
  • Technical Pacifist: Rudeus won't kill you if he feels that has the situation under control, but if you press him enough... better run the quicker you can.
  • Teen Genius: He is not an Instant Expert, but since Rudy kept the memories of his past self, he had a fully developed mind of an adult and picked up quickly on anything that he was interested in.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: While he has no trouble killing animals and monsters, he struggles with the idea of killing humans and sentient demons.
  • Totally Radical: His Inner Monologue notably uses some Japanese slang words, like his Character Catchphrase "riajuu" (roughly, "normie"), and "tsunda" ("it's over"). Justified because he would naturally be familiar with the slang from all of the games and anime he plays.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: In the novels, he enjoys tamago kake gohan (eggs over rice), but has trouble finding the right ingredients in his new life, namely rice and soy sauce.
  • Trash of the Titans: His siblings wade through the trash in his room when throwing his past self out of the house.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: He practically raises himself. His parents don't notice it too much but Lilia is initially disturbed to the point of thinking he was possessed.
  • True Craftsman: Soon after teaching himself magic, Rudeus starts crafting clay dolls based on his family and friends. The detail of his dolls amazes Zanoba who asks Rudeus to teach him about dollmaking.
  • The Unchosen One: For all of his accomplishments, he is not the one destined to defeat Hitogami. That's the job of The Chosen One who ends up helping out his descendants.
  • The Unfettered: He will do anything to protect his family, even if that goes against moral standards.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: His NEET former self leeched off of his parents for over a decade. After that, he couldn't even at least muster the courage to attend his parents' funeral due to his fear of the outside world. His brothers then caught him masturbating to a porn video instead of showing even a bit of mourning or respect for his late parents and they got so pissed that they finally kicked him out. Having seen the error of his ways, Rudeus vows to be grateful to his family and friends in his new life.
  • The Un-Smile: In the manga, when he finds out what happened to his treasured Roxy figurine, Rudy gives an unnatural "smiley face" expression that was supposed to give reassurance to Zanoba, but it only served to frighten the otherwise-unflappable guy.
  • Utility Magic: Uses magic for drinking water, making cookware, shelter, and even making dolls.
  • Wise Beyond His Years: Deconstructed and zig-zagged. Thanks to him retaining his memories from his previous life, Rudeus had the advantage of being more knowledgeable and wiser than most adults in his new life. However, he also has the experience, mentality, and knowledge of what you would expect of a 34-year-old shut-in Otaku NEET who dropped out of high school in his first year after being traumatized from the severe bullying. This leads to interpersonal conflicts with his loved ones, such as Paul and Eris, as they end up expecting Rudeus to resolve complicated situations and understand people's feelings without them needing to explain anything to him.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: The most common application of Rudy's Quagmire spell is to immobilize his opponents, leaving them easy pickings for his other spells.

The Heroines

    Tropes Common to the Three
  • Affectionate Nickname: After the three give birth to Rudeus' children, Sylphy, Roxy and Eris are nicknamed "White Mama", "Blue Mama", and "Red Mama" respectively after their hair colors.
  • Animal Motifs: In the anime's first opening, Roxy, Sylphy and Eris are represented by color-coded birds.
  • Balanced Harem: There is no Top Wife in this household; Rudeus loves all three of them equally.
  • Battle Harem: Sylphy and Roxy are both very capable mages. Meanwhile, Eris can form a Sword and Sorcerer dynamic with Rudeus thanks to her swordsmanship skills that she trains specifically to protect him.
  • Beauty, Brains, and Brawn: In Rudeus' personal "religion", Sylphy is his goddess of love because of her kind heart and emotional support that keeps the family together, Roxy is his goddess of wisdom for having taught him magic and shaped his ideology with her intelligent advice, and Eris is his goddess of war who trained for years to become a Sword King in order to protect him.
  • Betty and Veronica: Played With. Sylphy and Eris have all the traits to make them Rudeus' Betty and Veronica respectively: Sylphy is a kindhearted and supportive commoner, whereas Eris is a hotheaded and violent noblewoman. However, Rudeus doesn't romance them at the same time because he's separated from Sylphy for years while his relationship with Eris grows deeper until she suddenly leaves him. By the time he meets Sylphy again, Rudeus thinks his relationship with Eris is over for good and is unaware that she still has feelings for him. Adding to that, the Third-Option Love Interest Roxy was actually the first to meet Rudeus, but she didn't see him as a love interest until she reunites with him when he's already an adult and married to Sylphy. Rudeus proceeds to marry Roxy and Eris as well.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: As adults, Eris is tall, muscular and voluptuous, Sylphy is slender and skinny, and Roxy is short and petite.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Eris is the redhead, Roxy counts as a brunette of sorts with her blue hair, and Sylphy counts as a blonde after her Disease Bleach.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: The three first meet Rudeus in his childhood and develop a romantic relationship with him when he gets older. They end up married to Rudeus when he becomes an adult.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: Roxy has blue hair, Eris has red hair, and Sylphy has green hair as a child (she still wears green clothes after her hair turns white).
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The Little Miss Snarker Roxy is Melancholic, the Nice Girl Sylphy is Phlegmatic, and the Tsundere Eris is Choleric. Rudeus, the man the three love, is the Sanguine with natural charisma and people skills.
  • Freudian Trio: The intelligent and composed Roxy is the Superego, the brash and hotheaded Eris is the Id, and the gentle and even-tempered Sylphy is the emotionally balanced Ego.
  • Idiot Hair: The three have an ahoge sticking up on the top of their heads, just like Rudeus.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Sylphy and Roxy think they're not beautiful or buxom enough to attract Rudy. Eris worries she's not Rudeus' type because she's not very feminine or studious.
  • Marry Them All: The three love Rudeus deeply and are loved by him in return. They marry him and give birth to his children, becoming a happy family.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: Sylphy is the loving sweetheart, Eris is the aggressive Fiery Redhead, and Roxy is the snarky teacher.
  • One True Love: The three of them are the loves of Rudeus' life. According to Hitogami, Rudeus is fated to fall in love with Roxy, Sylphy, and Eris, and no matter the circumstances that temporarily separate them, he would eventually marry and have children with the three of them.
  • Polyamory: Sylphy, Roxy, and Eris all marry Rudeus.
  • Rescue Romance: The three started to fall in love with Rudeus after he rescued them at one point.
    • Rudeus rescued Sylphy from a bunch of kids that bullied her because of her green hair. They then start hanging out together, though Rudy wasn't aware at first that she was a girl. According to Sylphy herself, this was Love at First Sight for her.
    • When Eris and Rudy were kidnapped by slavers, he manages to get them out, though Ghyslaine had to help at the end. Eris started to respect him from that point on and it didn't take long until she started to develop romantic feelings for him.
    • When Rudy entered the dungeon where Zenith was trapped, he had to save Roxy first, who was also looking for Zenith, and almost died doing so. Roxy had always dreamed of marrying her rescuer and he fulfills it.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: The three love and admire Rudeus because his kindness, intelligence, and hardworking nature inspire them to better themselves.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: The three had a teacher-student relationship with Rudeus at some point before getting romantically involved with him.
    • Roxy was Rudeus' magic tutor when he was three years old. After marrying him, she gets a job at Ranoa Academy while Rudeus is still a student there.
    • After graduating from Roxy's tutelage, Rudeus taught magic to Sylphy.
    • The Boreas House hired Rudeus as Eris' academic tutor.
  • Themed Harem: The three girls were Childhood Friends to Rudeus with whom he shared a student-mentor relationship. After a yearslong separation, he has a fateful reunion with each one of them at different points and they rekindle their relationship, resulting in him marrying them.
  • The Three Faces of Eve: Sylphy is the Wife as she's the most domestic and best at emotionally supporting Rudeus. Roxy is the Child due to her young-looking body, although she's really the oldest of the three. Eris is the Seductress because she has the biggest buxom of the three as an adult and completely dominates Rudeus in the bedroom.
  • Town Girls: The gentle and wifely Sylphiette is femme, the tomboyish and brash swordswoman Eris is butch, and Roxy is neither too girly nor tomboyish.

    Roxy

Roxy M. Greyrat

Roxy Migurdia, God, Master

Voiced by: Ryō Hirohashi (Drama CD), Konomi Kohara (Anime) (JP), Michelle Rojas (EN) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roxyanime.png

A member of Migurd Race and Rudy's first magic teacher.

  • Absentminded Professor: As a teacher at Ranoa Academy, Roxy tends to forget some things, like lunches, schedules, etc.
  • A-Cup Angst: She's insecure about her child-like body, but Rudeus loves her nonetheless.
  • Age-Gap Romance: She's a good deal older than Rudeus by nearly 30 years.
  • The Baby Trap: Invoked. Elinalise telling Rudeus he got Roxy pregnant so that he would have no choice but to take Roxy as his second wife. When Roxy clears things up, just after Rudeus' decision is made, is where he realizes Elinalise's bluff.
  • Badass in Distress: While searching for Zenith, she winds up trapped in the Teleport Labyrinth for a month, slowly running out of food and mana. She is eventually overwhelmed by the labyrinth's monsters and can only await her impending doom.
  • Blue Means Smart One: Roxy is blue-haired and the smartest of Rudeus' love interests. Rudeus even names Roxy as the "Goddess of Wisdom" in the exclusive religion he eventually forms to worship his three wives.
  • Braids of Action: She has her hair tied in twin braids and is a badass in the magic department.
  • Breakout Character: She's popular enough to get her own spin-off manga series, Mushoku Tensei: Roxy Gets Serious, which details her life prior to her meeting with Rudeus.
  • But Now I Must Go: Realizing that Rudy has surpassed her, she happily graduates him and heads off to develop her own skills further in spite of Rudy and his family's insistence for her to stay.
  • Covert Pervert: Despite looking so youthful and acting quite serious, Roxy has a hidden interest in sex. After marrying Rudeus, she's more willing to try new things out in the bedroom than Sylphy and Eris.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Roxy's hair and eyes are both blue.
  • Cutesy Dwarf: Roxy looks like a cute young girl in her early teens, but she's actually a full-grown adult whose species ages slowly.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The protagonist of her own spinoff, Mushoku Tensei: Roxy Gets Serious.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: She's a King-Class water magician with blue hair. Also counts for Elemental Eye Colors because Curtains Match the Window.
  • Fictional Disability: She's the only known member of the Migurd race to be unable to read minds. In her village, this was treated similarly to being deaf because every other Migurd communicates telepathically and very few besides her and her parents can actually speak as they don't even bother to learn language. She has no trouble interacting with the rest of the world's inhabitants through verbal communication.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: On the search for survivors of the Mana Calamity, Roxy forms a party with Elinalise and Talhand who were also looking for the family of their old fellow party members Paul and Zenith. Roxy becomes close to them as a result.
  • First Love: Roxy ended up becoming Rudeus' in the new world. While he off the bat had a sexual attraction to her, Roxy managed to finally break him of his crippling social anxiety, and Rudeus remained completely enamored with her throughout his childhood.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: The moment Roxy meets Rudeus again as an adult when he rescues her from certain death, he appears to her like a Knight in Shining Armor, and she instantly falls in love with him. She doesn't recognize that this good-looking man in front of her is her former student Rudeus until after he gives his name.
  • From Roommates to Romance: After being hired as the three-year-old Rudeus' magic teacher, Roxy lives with Rudeus and his parents for two years. Rudeus tells Roxy he has a crush on her, but she tells him to try confessing to her again when he's of age. When they do meet again with Rudeus being an adult, Roxy immediately falls in love with him and becomes his second wife.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Even though she hates being mistaken for a child, her braided pigtails do make her look somewhat childish on top of her already young-looking body.
  • Height Angst: She's quite sensitive about her shortness.
  • Hero of Another Story: Before she met Rudeus, she had already been an adventurer for a couple of decades and traveled to many countries. The spin-off Mushoku Tensei: Roxy Gets Serious narrates the story of Roxy's life prior to Mushoku Tensei.
  • If We Survive This: In her POV chapter, she resolves to become a teacher and hopefully get married when she's trapped and close to death in the Teleport Labyrinth. Fortunately, Rudeus arrives Just in Time.
  • The Jailbait Wait: Due to 15 being considered the age when humans are considered adults in the Milis Continent after a 5-year-old Rudeus gives a Love Confession to Roxy, she tells him to hold onto his feelings and come to her again in 10 years if he still feels the same way.
  • The Klutz: Her targets for demonstrating magic to Rudy aren't well thought out, like Zenith's planted tree or the horse she was riding.
Roxy: May I ask that you keep this a secret from your parents?
  • Little Miss Snarker: She looks like a girl in her early teens and soon after meeting the Greyrats, she speaks dryly over Paul and Zenith probably being one of those excitable parents making a big deal out of a child with a talent for magic.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Rudeus literally worships her for helping him overcome his agoraphobia from his previous life. Her death in the alternate timeline drove him completely off the rails.
  • Long-Lived: Roxy's race has a lifespan that's double of a human's and her body doesn't age past her early teens until she's at least 150 years old.
  • Making a Splash: She specializes in water magic.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: Roxy's lifespan is double of a human such as Rudeus. Roxy first meets Rudeus when he's three years old. They reunite over a decade later, with Rudeus being an adult, but Roxy still looks like a little girl. After Zenith's rescue, Roxy becomes Rudeus' second wife. Rudeus eventually dies from old age while Roxy hasn't aged at all.
  • Missed Him by That Much: Roxy's party arrived at a port town where Rudeus' own party is currently staying in, but thanks to Hitogami's intervention, they never got to actually meet, even though she has a run-in with Ruijierd by accident. She later learns from her parents about Rudeus' companions, so putting two and two together gives her a Heroic BSoD.
  • The Mistress: Although they didn't have bad intentions as both were looking for comfort after Paul's death, Rudeus still cheats on his first wife Sylphy when he has sex with Roxy. Unlike his father Paul who did something similar with Lilia, Rudeus comes clean about what happened and asks Sylphy's permission to make Roxy his second wife. Since Sylphy can tell Roxy loves Rudeus as much as she does, she agrees to it.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: Due to being a Migurdian, Roxy looks only slightly older than her two daughters, Lara and Lily. Lara could even be mistaken for her twin sister.
  • My Greatest Failure: She eventually regrets not properly instructing Pax Shirone. Yes, he was a Royal Brat, but Roxy expected way too much from him after mentoring Rudeus and never praised his efforts in learning magic.
  • Noodle Incident: Roxy left the Magic Academy because of a falling out with her mentor, who, at the present time is now vice-principal and happens to be an acquaintance of Rudeus. Rudeus decides not to ask for any elaboration and lets them talk things out by themselves.
  • Older Than She Looks: She's 34 the first time she meets Rudeus, but doesn't look like she's past 12. Even well into the future, near Rudeus's death and well past Eris's passing, she still looks the same.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Early in the anime, it's a bit of a Running Gag that we're shown Roxy being groped by prince Pax at the Shirone Kingdom. Roxy then burns him with fire magic to make him stop.
  • Private Tutor: She lives with the Greyrat family for a couple of years while she's teaching their son Rudeus magic. She also lives at the palace of the Shirone Kingdom for a few years while teaching the seventh prince.
  • Recessive Super Genes: Roxy is the only Migurd to have been born without Telepathy. This caused her to feel alienated while growing up in the Migurd village since only her parents spoke verbally to communicate with her. Her daughter Lara, however, does inherit the Migurd race's telepathic ability.
  • Retired Badass: After retiring from adventuring, she settles down to teach at Ranoa Magic Academy.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat: She wears a black hat and a beige robe.
  • The Runaway: She felt alienated in her hometown due to being the only Migurd who can't communicate telepathically. This led to her leaving her village without telling her parents and making a living as an adventurer.
  • Sexy Mentor: She's Rudy's first magic teacher and one of his love interests who he ends up marrying. Although, she's cute rather than sexy given that she has the body of a 13-year-old.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She and her mother look identical except for the hairstyles.
  • Supernaturally Young Parent: Roxy eventually becomes the mother of two daughters after marrying Rudeus and she still doesn't look older than 13 because her race ages very slowly compared to humans.
  • Sweet Tooth: Greatly enjoys sweets. She had also never enjoyed alcoholic drinks until she learned that they can be made to taste sweet.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: Her dream is falling in love with a handsome adventurer who bravely saves her life in a dungeon like a Knight in Shining Armor rescuing his princess. Rudeus eventually makes Roxy's dream come true.
  • Token Mini-Moe: She's the only one of Rudeus' love interests with an unchanging childlike body because her race doesn't age past their early teens until much later in their lives. Not that this stops Rudeus from making her one of his wives.
  • Weight Woe: Roxy laments that her sudden weight gain from her first pregnancy may be permanent.

    Sylphiette

Sylphiette Greyrat

Sylphy, Silent Fitz

Voiced by: Ai Kayano (JP), Emily Neves (EN) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sylphyanime_7.png
Click here to see her as "Fitz"
Child of a half-elven father and human mother (actually Heinz Hybrid as her mother has Beast Race ancestry) that got bullied because of her race and befriended by Rudeus in Buena Village. She learned magic from Rudeus and they became each other's Only Friend until Rudeus takes a job as a tutor in the Boreas Greyrat House.
  • A-Cup Angst: She laments her petite figure, especially in the presence of Ariel and Eris, and Luke unflatteringly pointing it out is one of her few triggers.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Sylphy has a very kind heart and a gentle personality, but that in no way means she's a pushover and shows her harsh side when she feels it's needed.
  • Bifauxnen: Rudeus thought Sylphy was a very pretty boy until he pulled her pants down. As a teenager, she is able to disguise herself as the male Silent Fitz and become quite popular with the ladies.
  • Bloodstained Defloration: Sylphy's hymen blood stains the sheets when she gives her virginity to Rudeus. Afterwards, Rudeus stores the blood-stained sheets as a keepsake of his ED being cured and later on, has it enshrined in the basement of his family home.
  • Boyish Short Hair: In her childhood and teenage years, Sylphy has very short hair, due to its originally green color making her look like a Superd. This is the main reason why Rudeus mistakes her for a boy, twice. As an adult, she still has short hair, but lets it grow out a bit and styles it in a more feminine manner.
  • Boyish Shorts: Subverted. As a child, Sylphy only wears shorts to run away from her bullies more easily. Rudeus initially mistakes her for a boy due to this and her short hair, only finding out Sylphy is a girl when he pulls down her shorts.
  • Bully Magnet: Until she met Rudeus, she was bullied by other kids in their village because of her non-human ancestry and green hair.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: A few sips of alcohol and she will instantly get drunk, and very clingy.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Fitz's troubles from Volume 7 through most of 9 is about her inability to tell Rudeus that she's his long-lost childhood friend Sylphy. She also kept Princess Ariel and Luke in the dark about originally having green hair (due to the stigma related to that color, which Sylphy is well aware of), making them think Rudeus is insensitive about not recognizing her.
  • Child Prodigy: Thanks to Rudeus, she becomes a powerful mage by age 7.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She gets huffy when Rudeus shows interest in other girls.
  • The Confidant: While she's in her male disguise, Rudeus looks up to "Fitz" as a dependable upperclassman and seeks "him" out for advice multiple times. Gradually, Rudeus realizes he feels at ease with "Fitz" and it's the most comfortable he has felt with someone ever since Eris left him. After he figures out "Fitz" is Sylphy, he confides in her everthing that happened to him since the Mana Catastrophe and the incident with Eris that lead to his ED. His newfound love and trust in Sylphy not leaving him like Eris did is what cures him.
  • Cool Shades: As the royal bodyguard Fitz, she wears sunglasses that hide her eyes.
  • Covert Pervert: She's demure and polite, but is surprisingly open to admit she has erotic fantasies about Rudeus.
  • Crush Filter: Her Imagine Spots always shade Rudy in a positive light.
  • Demoted to Satellite Love Interest: She gets reintroduced as Princess Ariel's competent bodyguard, but soon after her reunion with Rudeus, Sylphy's character arc mainly becomes about her restarting a romance with him. After her marriage to Rudeus, she quickly takes a backseat to the main plot, since she gets pregnant and can't go with Rudeus to aid in Zenith's rescue mission. With Ariel's coronation, Sylphy officially retires from her job as bodyguard and spends the rest of the story as Rudeus' housewife.
  • Devoted to You: She loves Rudeus and is wholeheartedly devoted to him as a wife down the line.
  • Disease Bleach: Her hair turns white as a result of overusing her magic during the Mana Catastrophe.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": After she reveals her true identity, Sylphy asks Rudeus to stop calling her "Fitz-senpai" and to not use keigo when speaking to her because she feels like he's creating a distance between them when he does that.
  • Expressive Ears: Her ears move up and down depending on her mood.
  • Extreme Doormat: She is the most submissive to Rudeus and will do anything he asks of her in bed.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: She's the most feminine of Rudeus' love interests and also happens to be the best at cooking.
  • First Friend: She and Rudeus are each other's first friends and they often played together as children.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Years after the Mana Catastrophe, Sylphy meets Rudeus again when both are students at the Ranoa Magic Academy, but he doesn't recognize her because her hair color changed and also, she's posing as a boy. He finally figures it out when Sylphy recreates the situation of Rudeus stripping her like when he found out she's a girl in their childhood.
  • Freakiness Shame: Throughout her childhood, Sylphy got bullied because her green hair made her look like a Superd. She's actually glad when her hair turns white and doesn't like telling people about her former hair color due to her issues with the bullying she faced. Despite that, Rudeus thought her original hair color was beautiful.
  • Gender-Concealing Voice: In the anime, Sylphy speaks with a lower voice when disguised as the male bodyguard "Fitz".
  • Girl Next Door: She serves the role of Rudeus' sweet childhood friend who is very supportive of him. Out of his three love interests, Sylphy makes him feel most at ease.
  • Girliness Upgrade: As a child, her parents tried to help Sylphy deal with bullying by cutting the green hair that drew other kids' attention and making her wear shorts, so she could run away from her bullies. As a teenager, she must disguise herself as a man when serving Princess Ariel. After she marries Rudeus and reaches adulthood, Sylphy grows out her hair a bit and dresses more femininely.
  • Goggles Do Something Unusual: As Ariel's bodyguard, she wears sunglasses that are actually a magic item that allows her to perceive if Ariel is in any danger.
  • Healing Hands: Better at this than Rudeus, especially since he can't use healing magic without chanting.
  • Heinz Hybrid: Downplayed. Sylphy is quarter-Elven from her father's side, and nearly the entire remainder is human. Her mother is stated to have a tiny portion of Beastman ancestry, but neither of them has any real animal traits.
  • Hollywood Genetics: Neither of her parents had her natural bright green hair, which is an implicit autosomal recessive trait inheritance from the merging of those two exotic species lineages. However, the real reason for her green hair is that she was born with the Laplace factor.
  • Housewife: Once she retires from her duty as Ariel's guard, Sylphy spends the rest of her days looking after the Greyrat home.
  • Improbable Age: At age 10, she becomes Princess Ariel's new bodyguard after saving her from a rampaging magical creature that had killed her previous magic bodyguard Derrick.
  • In-Series Nickname: Her name is Sylphiette, but she's called "Sylphy" for short. She's also nicknamed "Silent Fitz" at Ranoa Magic Academy for her ability to cast spells without incantations.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Her assumed name has been translated as "Fitts" and "Fitz".
  • Insistent Terminology: At school, she's Silent Fitz, and refuses to be addressed any other way, even after her marriage to Rudeus and Girliness Upgrade. She eventually drops the habit once she retires from being Ariel's bodyguard.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: The adult Greyrats as well as her own parents forbade Sylphy from learning where Rudy was sent for his tutoring job. She tried, but instead, Zenith taught her more magic while Lilia with etiquette. (she refuses to ask Paul since he's to blame for the separation in the first place.)
  • Long-Lived: Due to her elven heritage, she ages slowly compared to other humans.
  • Love Forgives All but Lust: In the Bad Future, Roxy's death leads to Rudeus becoming an alcoholic who rejects Sylphy's many attempts to console him and lashes out at her whenever she approaches him. Despite Rudeus' abusive treatment, Sylphy tried to endure it and be there for him, but she finally left him after Rudeus cheated on her by sleeping with a prostitute.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: Her emerald green hair was an unusual trait that she was born with, which caused her to draw unwanted attention from the village kids. Her parents, who both lacked green hair, thought Sylphy's green hair was a recessive trait inherited from their non-human genes. Though it later turns out that her green hair has nothing to do with her lineage at all; Sylphy got the Laplace factor from birth and Laplace's hair was green, explaining Sylphy's rare hair color.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Nanahoshi tells Sylphy and Rudeus that she "caused" the Mana Catastrophe. Lacking the context Rudeus has, Sylphy flies into a Roaring Rampage of Revenge, blaming Nanahoshi for all the lives that were lost because of that disaster, including her own parents. Rudeus has to calm her down by explaining Nanahoshi is a victim too and didn't cause the disaster intentionally.
  • Mistaken Age: Until he finally figures out her identity, one of Rudy's recurring misconceptions of Fitz is that "he" has not broken puberty yet and might be two years younger. They're actually the same age.
  • Mistaken Ethnicity: Her bright green hair makes it easy for people to mistake her for a Superd, a race of demons that is feared throughout the world. Later justified due to her having the Laplace factor from birth, and Laplace was also the Demon God amongst the various Demon Races in the Demon Continent, including the Superd Race.
  • Mr. Imagination: When she is the perspective character (like in Volume 9) it's shown that Sylphy has a very vivid imagination, and constantly has Imagine Spots about Rudy.
  • Nervous Tics: She has the habit to touch her Pointy Ears when she's nervous or flustered.
  • Nice Girl: Sylphy is the most polite, kindhearted, and understanding of the three main heroines.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite initial misgivings about what Rudy was doing, Sylphy thinks up a Prank Punishment for Linia and Pursena, claiming the messages they've painted on their bodies will become permanent if they misbehave again, later giggling as she tells him the paint used can be removed pretty easily in spite of what she said to them.
  • Older Than She Looks: When Eris and Rudeus have become old, Sylphy looks like a woman in her thirties despite being the same age as Rudeus. This is due to her elf heritage.
  • Only One Name: Sylphiette doesn't have a surname at least until she marries Rudeus. Also, as Ariel's bodyguard, she's only known as Fitz.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Any adventuring party or noble would kill to have a magician as skilled as Sylphy, but with her husband being the most powerful living magician in the world, and the other wives being an extremely experienced adventurer and a Sword King and North Saint, she ends up choosing to take care of the house.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: When she heard Rudeus say he was thinking about leaving their village to learn more about magic, Sylphy started crying and begged him to not go anywhere without her. This almost convinced Rudeus to spend his life peacefully with Sylphy, until Roxy's letter suggested he go to the Ranoa Magic Academy. She later tells him that she's more afraid of Rudeus disappearing on her than that of him having an affair.
  • Pointy Ears: Her long, pointy ears are indicators of her elf ancestry.
  • Prematurely Grey-Haired: As a result of exhausting her mana, Sylphy's green hair turns white when she's still in her early teens.
  • Rags to Riches: From the daughter of a poor hunter to one of Princess Ariel's retainers. Her husband Rudeus also makes a lot of money.
  • Red Mage: She is able to use offensive and healing spells chantlessly.
  • Retired Badass: After Ariel ascends the throne, Sylphy decides to stay home and look after the children while everyone else goes adventuring and saves the world.
  • Second Love: Although Rudeus met Sylphy earlier, his first official girlfriend was Eris. After Eris leaves the morning after they lose their virginity together, Rudeus is left heartbroken and is unable to have a new relationship for the following two years because of the erectile dysfunction that resulted from the trauma with Eris. Meeting Sylphy again, even though she's disguised as a boy at the time, leads to them falling in love and they get married after Sylphy cures Rudeus of his erectile dysfunction.
  • She Is All Grown Up: After he finds out her true identity, Rudeus is delighted to find out his childhood friend grew up into a fine and lovely woman.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: She's the most feminine of Rudeus' love interests, but Sylphy is still a royal bodyguard and a capable mage.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She doesn't show romantic interest in anyone else but Rudeus. In fact, in other timelines where Rudeus didn't exist, she never married. Roxy has shown attraction to other men and Eris originally married Luke Notos Greyrat.
  • Speaking Up for Another: She steps up to defend Rudeus when the female students catch him carrying Ariel's panties, mistake him for a Panty Thief, and start throwing insults at him. This event leads to Rudeus respecting and appreciating "Fitz" much more.
  • Sprint Shoes: Fitz has the "Gale Boots" which allowed her to move at twice the speed of normal. Rudeus first saw it in action when he asked her to retrieve his Aqua Heartia for his duel with Badigadi.
  • Sunglasses at Night: When disguised as Fitz, she never takes off her sunglasses, which prevents Rudeus from recognizing her as Sylphy until she finally allows him to remove them.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver: To maintain her persona as Fitz, she wears more masculine clothing and avoids speaking when possible (which along with her use of chantless magic, gave her the "Silent" moniker).
  • Talented, but Trained: It's revealed that she, like Rudeus, has the Laplace Factor and this gives her bigger mana resources than the average. Orsted, however, states that without training extensively she and Rudeus wouldn't have become that great.
  • Through His Stomach: She tells Rudy that she learned how to cook from Lilia and her own mother so Sylphy can one day cook for him.
  • Tomboyish Name: "Sylphiette" is a very feminine name, but Rudeus calls her "Sylph" at first due to mishearing her name and mistaking her for a boy. After he finds out Sylphiette is a girl, he calls her by the girlier nickname "Sylphy".
  • Too Much Information: When telling Ariel and Luke about her feelings for Rudeus, she goes on to talk about her perverted fantasies about him.
  • Twice Shy: With Rudeus throughout the Ranoa Magic Academy arc. Sylphy still loves Rudeus as much as when they were children, but is too shy to tell him how she feels, especially because she's insecure about whether Rudeus actually remembers her. On the other hand, Rudeus starts falling for "Fitz", but doesn't want to admit it because of the thought that he's turning gay.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: A good part of the Ranoa Magic Academy arc is built around the intense sexual tension between Sylphy and Rudeus. They're obviously attracted to each other, but Sylphy is too afraid of telling Rudeus the truth about her feelings and true identity, while Rudeus is confused about why he's suddenly falling for a "boy".

    Eris

Eris Greyrat

Eris Boreas Greyrat, Mad Dog Eris, Mad Sword King

Voiced by: Ai Kakuma (JP), Lindsay Seidel (EN) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/erisanime_6.png
Daughter of Phillip Boreas Greyrat and granddaughter of Sauros, governor of the Fedoa territory. She is a high-spirited young lady whom Rudeus is assigned to teach.
  • Action Girl: From a young age, Eris is proficient with the sword and gets better at it when she spends a few years in an adventurer party with Rudeus and Ruijierd. After training under Gal Farion for several years, she attains the title of Sword King.
  • A-Cup Angst: Downplayed. Eris wants to have a grown woman's body quickly, but has full confidence that she'll inherit her mother's giant chest. By eighteen, she was right on the money, and Rudeus couldn't be more happy.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: After Orsted mortally wounds Rudeus in front of her, she cradles his dying body and screams for anyone to save him. Fortunately, Nanahoshi convinces Orsted to keep Rudeus alive.
  • Amazonian Beauty: After her years of training under Gal Farion, Eris has rock hard muscles, six pack abs and large breasts. And Rudeus couldn't be more pleased.
  • Badass Armfold: Eris loves to use this due to her love for Sauros, modeling herself after her grandfather.
  • Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: Inverted. In her adulthood, Eris wears a top that exposes her belly, but compared to Sylphy and Roxy, she's the least feminine of Rudeus' love interests.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She saves Rudeus during his second fight with Orsted.
  • Big Eater: Students of the Sword God style tend to eat a lot, and Eris is no exception, often seeking multiple servings, even if the food is no better than tolerable.
  • Big Sister Mentor: She teaches swordsmanship to Ghyslaine's niece Minitona for the few months that the Dead End party spends in the Doldia tribe. Minitona sees Eris as a Cool Big Sis and adores her as much as Eris adores Ghyslaine.
  • Bitch Slap: She slaps Rudeus in their first meeting, as she finds it insulting that that he can talk back to her despite being younger. Rudeus returns the slap, but Eris gets even more pissed and beats him up.
  • Book Dumb: She's not very academically inclined and ends up forgetting most of the stuff Rudeus taught her. She is by no means stupid though, Ghyslaine clearly states that some measure of intellectual understanding is necessary to rise to the rank of Sword King. Also, she was able to follow the extremely abstract conversation between Rudeus and Orsted (while being affected by his curse, no less) and understand its general gist.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: In her introduction, Eris is a loud, haughty, and insolent little brat who hits Rudeus for simply talking back to her. Her uncontrollable attitude made all her tutors before Rudeus quit on their first day. She quickly grows out of this as Rudeus' teachings greatly improve her personality.
  • The Bus Came Back: Eris leaves on a journey after she has sex with Rudeus at the end of Volume 6. She finally makes her return in Volume 15, when she pulls a Big Damn Heroes moment to save Rudeus from being killed by Orsted.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: As an adult, she has grown to have a pretty impressive bust, making her the woman that Rudeus is most physically attracted to out of his three wives.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Downplayed. Eris is jealous of Rudeus's other love interests, as she doesn't like it when she learns of his close relationship with Sylphy. She also isn't happy to find out he married Sylphy and Roxy during the years she was away because of her training (since he didn't know she planned to come back to him). She adjusts herself to the situation easily enough, though. However, because of how she was raised, she sees no problem with him having sex with her beast girl slave servants, and she even offers to let Rudeus "use" them for this purpose. Rudeus turns her down because he considers it a betrayal of his wives.
  • Cry into Chest: She cries into Rudeus' chest after Gyes insults Ghyslaine in front of her.
  • Crying After Sex: The manga shows Eris crying after her first time with Rudeus, as she realized she was relying too much on a younger boy and became convinced she won't be good enough for him until she becomes stronger.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Eris has red hair and red eyes.
  • Cute Little Fangs: The times when she's almost quite literally snarling with anger show that she has rather prominently long canines.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She is the protagonist of her own spin-off manga, Mushoku Tensei: Eris Seriously Sharpens Her Fangs. In the anime, she's the main character of an OVA showing what she got up to while Rudeus was reuniting with Paul.
  • Death Faked for You: With the whole Boreas family dead, Eris was going to be sold off as a concubine to a perverted nobleman. After gaining the resolve to get stronger for Rudeus, Eris runs off with Ghyslaine who takes her to train at the Holy Land of the Sword. Afterwards, it's decided that Eris will be falsely reported as having died during the teleportation incident, although they'll wait a while to make the official announcement.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Unlike Roxy and Sylphy, Eris was very mean and abusive towards Rudeus when they first met, refusing to even acknowledge him because she didn't want a tutor younger than her. After Rudeus saves her from kidnappers, Eris accepts him as her tutor and falls in love with him thanks to learning so much from him.
  • Disease Bleach: At the end of the Decisive Battle Chapter, Eris has streaks of white in her hair due to mana strain.
  • Dragged by the Collar: A brief Running Gag in Volume 5 sees Eris trying to have harsh words with Paul for Rudy's sake, that Ruijierd had to cart her away.
  • Dumb Muscle: Her strength are her sword and muscles, but she's quite Book Dumb. After doing nothing but train under Gal Farion for several years, she even forgets how to write and read.
  • Emotionally Tongue-Tied: Eris is a very headstrong and straightforward girl, making it hard for her to express her feelings in sentimental words. She visibly struggles to say a simple "I'm here for you" to comfort Rudeus after his fight with Paul. This flaw of hers causes a big problem in her relationship with Rudeus later on. After they have sex, Eris realizes she isn't strong enough to protect Rudeus and leaves him to train herself. Unfortunately, the poor way in which she phrased her reason for leaving in her goodbye letter makes Rudeus assume Eris didn't want him anymore.
  • Establishing Character Moment: As soon as Rudeus is taken to meet his new student Eris, he's intimidated by her intense glare. His next impression is "violent" when Eris hits him only because she's annoyed that he's younger than her and after Rudeus hits her back, she outright assaults him. Rudeus then comments that instead of an Ojou, Eris seems like the protagonist of a delinquent manga.
  • Fake Danger Gambit: Deconstructed. After her Establishing Character Moment, Rudeus decide to come up with a plan (with Philip's consent) to fake a kidnapping in order to help nudge Eris in the right direction. Unfortunately, the staged kidnapping becomes reality when one of the servants betrays them.
  • Fallen Princess: Eris starts as an arrogant and pampered daughter of a noble family. After the Mana Catastrophe, she loses her hometown and her family. Realizing that Rudeus is all she has left, she gives up her noble status and fully devotes herself to improving her swordsmanship in order to protect Rudeus.
  • Fiery Redhead: Eris is the most Hot-Blooded and short-tempered of Rudeus' love interests. It's just perfect she's also the redhead of the trio. Age has treated her well, however, and she matured very nicely into a well-respected woman and mother in her adulthood.
  • Freak Out: Panics at the sight of Ruijierd, a Superd, to the point of crying. She quickly gets over it after a few minutes of him not trying to eat her.
  • From Roommates to Romance: Rudeus moves into the Boreas House after being hired as Eris' Private Tutor and they live together for three years, which results in them gradually falling in love.
  • Hair Memento: After Rudeus sleeps with Eris for the first time, he wakes up to find Eris went out on a journey without telling him anything and only left him most of her hair along with a very vaguely worded goodbye letter. Rudeus later burns said hair because carrying a keepsake of Eris was too painful for him.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: It takes even the smallest trigger to send Eris into a violent rage. This trait proves disadvantageous against Water God Sword practitioners, who can read and react to her Killing Intent even before she makes a move.
  • Harem Seeker: Her grandfather and father had several beast girls as their mistresses. Naturally, when she's older, Eris takes the beast girls Lynia and Pursena as her mistresses. Rudeus has a small harem formed by Sylphy, Roxy, and Eris, so he finds it ironic that he's technically part of Eris' own harem.
  • Honey Trap: Her own father planned to have her seduce Rudeus on the latter's tenth birthday after Rudeus showed reluctance to participate in the rebellion against the Notos' house. Although Rudeus knows what Philip is up to, he's all for sleeping with Eris, except Eris ruins the moment since she isn't ready to go all the way yet.
  • Humanizing Tears: Given how tough and hotheaded Eris is, any scene where she cries is very heart-wrenching. The main example is when Orsted fatally injuries Rudeus in front of her and she breaks down in tears as she desperately begs for someone to save Rudeus.
  • Hypocrite: Upon meeting Rudeus, she's quick to slap him for being "rude", as in she's insulted that he's her tutor when he's younger than her. Then when he slaps her (lightly) in hopes that she can understand how it feels, she's quick to outright assault him.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Beats up Rudeus for trying to sniff and steal her panties and won't allow him to do her laundry. Later on, she's the one who sniffs and steals his underwear.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: This is her motive for leaving Rudeus for a few years. When traveling with Rudeus and Ruijierd, Eris wishes to be as strong as them. After Rudeus is nearly killed by Orsted, Eris realizes that she's too weak to protect him. Gaining the resolve to grow stronger, Eris has Ghyslaine take her to train with her master in order to become a Sword King that can challenge Orsted.
  • Important Haircut: She cut her long hair after sleeping with Rudeus as a symbol of her resolve to become stronger for him, even if it meant leaving him.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Eris has sex with Rudeus after she learns of her family's death, but then leaves him immediately after the fact to improve her swordsmanship under Ghyslaine's teacher. Eris thought Rudeus would understand she didn't feel good enough for him without explaining herself, so her goodbye letter only tells him that she believed "they weren't a good match". Contrary to what Eris expected, Rudeus takes it as Eris dumping him and becomes heartbroken.
  • It's Not You, It's Me: After she and Rudeus make it back to Fittoa, she realizes she's been holding Rudeus back so she separates herself from him so she can become a woman worthy of him. Unfortunately, she fails to properly communicate this in her letter, leading Rudeus to believe she left because he was the problem.
  • Kissing Cousins: She's one of Rudeus' love interests and eventual wives as well as his distant cousin.
  • The Lad-ette: As an adult, Eris has grown into an aggressive, blunt, and powerful warrior who enjoys swords and sex more than anything. Rudeus calls her the husband of their marriage.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Her violent attitude as a child caused some karmic consequences for her. She was apparently abusive to her family's staff, which prompts one of them to organize her kidnapping to get rid of her. Then when she tries attacking her and Rudeus' kidnappers to escape, she's on the receiving end of a brutal No-Holds-Barred Beatdown that ends in her missing teeth and her face bleeding onto the floor.
  • Leaving You to Find Myself: Eris wants to marry Rudeus, but realizes that staying with him will only make her continue depending on him and she'll never reach her true potential that way. Gaining the resolve to become a warrior who can protect Rudeus as he has protected her, Eris leaves him the morning after they sleep together and travels to the Holy Land of the Sword where she trains for years to become a Sword King who can fight Orsted.
  • Let's Wait a While: On Rudeus's tenth birthday, Eris's parents send her to his bedroom in nothing but a nightgown. However, Eris isn't ready to go beyond some groping and tells Rudeus to wait for his fifteenth birthday to go all the way with her. They really do it three years later, two years before the promised date, after the death of her family caused Eris to grow impatient for intimacy with Rudeus.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Eris grows up to be the horniest member of Rudeus' harem, so much so that her sex drive surpasses that of Rudeus. When they're married, Rudeus is the one who can't ever hope to keep up with Eris in bed and allows her to keep beast girl mistresses to help him with that.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Downplayed; Rudy isn't that girlish, but Eris is much more of a tomboy and aggressive than him. When they get married, he considers himself more as being her wife.
  • Master Swordsman: She's very talented with the sword from an early age, eventually achieving the rank of Sword King. She also becomes Saint-ranked in the North God Sword style.
  • Meaningful Name: Both from Classical Mythology.
    • The mythological Eris is the goddess of strife and discord, and is sometimes portrayed as a War God. This Eris is certainly as belligerent as a god of war, and at the end of the first season causes Rudeus quite a bit of strife and discord when she abruptly disappears.
    • Boreas is the name of The Old North Wind, known for his strength and his temper. These are two qualities Eris is equally famous for.
  • Ms. Fanservice: After she becomes an adult, she's the most sexualized of Rudeus' love interests. She has the biggest breasts and most developed physique. She's also the best at the act of sex.
  • Mundane Utility: She's beginner level in fire magic, which she mostly uses for starting campfires or burning wax for letters.
  • My Greatest Failure: In her first fight against Orsted, Eris is utterly defeated and can do nothing but watch as Orsted mortally wounds Rudeus in front of her. Not wanting to experience the fear of losing Rudeus ever again, Eris spends the next few years training her body to become a Sword King who can protect Rudeus from Orsted.
  • Naughty by Night: Despite her aggressive nature and pronounced sexual prowess, Eris is actually quite shy about exposing this part of herself to others besides Rudeus. When Rudeus wants a foursome with all of his wives, Eris was actually the hardest to convince to participate because of this.
  • Never Learned to Read: When Rudeus first meets her, she's 8 years old, can't do math, and only knows how to write her name. With his instruction, she becomes functionally literate, only to lose it all again when she goes training under the Sword God.
  • No Indoor Voice: When Rudeus first meets her, Eris can't say almost anything without screaming, a habit she picked up from her grandfather. She learns to tone this down, but can bring it back when she needs to make a point.
  • Not Staying for Breakfast: Eris and Rudeus lose their virginity together. The next morning, she's gone and only left behind a letter that vaguely says "they're not a good match". Turns out she left to train herself and come back strong enough to protect Rudeus, but he misunderstands the situation and assumes Eris dumped him. The trauma of apparently being abandoned by Eris after getting intimate with her causes Rudeus' erectile dysfunction for the following three years.
  • Ojou: She's the daughter of the noble house Boreas and lived as a rich lady until the teleportation incident made her lose her home and family.
  • One Degree of Separation: Eris spent all her time training in the Land of the Sword God, which, judging by the geography of Mushoku Tensei's world, is relatively not far from Sharia City, which Rudeus made his second home. By comparison, Rudeus has made expeditions to more distant places like Lapan and Rikarisu (both on different continents) long before their reunion.
  • Passed in Their Sleep: At the age of 74, after a regular day of training, Eris returns home tired and collapses in bed, then passes away from old age.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: Rudy and Eris are actually almost betrothed to each other. Philip Boreas sent a letter to Paul just before Rudy's 10th birthday, to set up the engagement. The only reason it didn't become official was because of the Mana Catastrophe. Eris ends up married to Rudy anyway because they really fell in love after spending six years together and Eris wanted Rudy to become her new family after her parents and grandfather died.
  • Playing with Fire: She learned beginners' level fire magic from Rudeus, but never advances in that department as she greatly favors the sword.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The day after Rudeus and Eris do the deed for the first time, Eris ups and leaves in the middle of the night and only leaves Rudeus with a note saying that they're "a bad match for now." She also leaves Rudeus with no indication of where or why she even left. This causes Rudeus to become distraught, feeling abandoned and betrayed by Eris since prior to that, she had indicated she wanted to start a family with him. Rudeus had no way to know Eris left because she wanted to become strong enough to protect him. In the Bad Future, this miscommunication resulted in Eris dying while protecting Rudeus and he only knew about her true feelings through Ghyslaine when it was already too late. Rudeus' future self informs him of this, which leads to Rudeus marrying Eris.
  • Race Fetish: Like all the other members of the Boreas Greyrats known, Eris has a race fetish for beast people, so much so that she makes the Doldia tribe princesses turned servants/slaves Lynia and Pursena her personal mistresses. Rudeus allows it since he knows he alone can't give his most sex-crazed wife enough attention.
  • Red Baron: In her time as a member of the Dead End party, she gets the nickname "Mad Dog" Eris.
  • Redheads Are Ravishing: The redheaded Eris grows up to become a buxom Amazonian Beauty, having by far the biggest breasts out of Rudeus' wives. She sexually dominates her husband in bed, to the point he thinks she should be called his husband.
  • Red Hot Masculinity: A female example. The Fiery Redhead Eris is the most tomboyish of Rudeus' love interests, being a hotheaded and passionate swordswoman. After they get married, Rudeus jokingly calls her his husband.
  • Sex for Solace: Shortly after turning fifteen, Eris returns to Fedoa only to find out her parents and grandfather all died because of the teleportation incident. On the same night, Eris asks Rudeus to fulfill their promise to have sex two years earlier than planned. After the fact, Eris realizes she had sex with Rudeus to comfort herself and make him feel responsible for her so he wouldn't leave her. Concluding that she was becoming too dependent on him, Eris leaves Rudeus to train herself and eventually return as a warrior who can protect him.
  • Sex Goddess: As an adult, Eris considers sex as the only thing she's good at, besides swordsmanship. Her husband Rudeus actually thinks Eris is his husband for the way she has absolute domination over him in bed.
  • She Is All Grown Up: After they reunite as adults, Rudeus is thrilled to see that Eris developed the voluptuous figure of her mother.
  • Shed the Family Name: After she learns her parents and grandfather died in the aftermath of the Mana Catastrophe, Eris discards the Boreas family name, but keeps the Greyrat in her name as she still intends to marry Rudeus Greyrat.
  • Spoiled Brat: All of her initial personality problems were a result of being spoiled rotten by her rich upbringing. Her parents and grandfather didn't try to correct her bratty behavior since her grandfather gets away with screaming and punching people all he wants. It's not until Rudeus arrives that Eris finally learns to respect and listen to someone.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Eris gets her looks from her mother. When she's older, she gets her mother's G-cup-size breasts too, to Rudeus' delight.
  • Sword and Sorcerer: Swordswoman to Rudeus' Sorcerer. While she has rudimentary skills in magic, she prefers to charge in, sword drawn.
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: She doesn't see a problem with sleeping with the Greyrat family's beast girl maids since her own family commonly used their beast people servants for sex as well and she grew up viewing such activity as normal. Rudeus, her husband, has no problem with it since the servants are girls and Rudeus can't hope to keep up with Eris's sexual appetite, even if he didn't have two other wives to consider. However, Rudeus himself doesn't take advantage due to wanting to remain faithful to his wives.
  • Tiny Tyrannical Girl: Eris starts off as a domineering and furious 9-year-old girl who beats up anyone that defies her. Thankfully, she grows out of it once Rudeus earns her respect.
  • Token Human: Among the three heroines, Eris is the only one who is a full human instead of a demon race like Roxy and a mixed race like Sylphy. This is why only Eris ages at the same rate as Rudeus and eventually dies from old age before him.
  • Tomboy Princess: While she was raised as a nobleman's daughter, Eris' favorite thing is swordsmanship and she's the least feminine of Rudeus' love interests.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She was already talented for combat, but her swordsmanship significantly improves during her journey from the Magic Continent to reach home with Ruijierd and Rudeus. She gets even better after she leaves Rudeus to train under the Sword God directly.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: When she meets Rudeus, Eris is a loud Spoiled Brat who looks down on Rudeus for being younger than her and gets violent for no reason. She starts to respect Rudeus after his intelligence saves them from her kidnappers and learning from him gradually softens her. After a few years, Eris has become much more mature and reasonable thanks to Rudeus' influence.
  • Tsundere: A heavy "harsh" type towards Rudeus. She's brash, prideful and violent, but occasionally open and affectionate with him.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Eris is the only heroine with eyes slanted upwards to make it obvious that she's the Tsundere of Rudeus' little harem.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: After she sees Rudeus almost killed by Orsted, Eris realizes she's too weak to protect Rudeus. Sleeping with Rudeus shortly afterward makes Eris gain the resolve to become someone who can protect the man she loves. She spends years training her swordsmanship to the point that she can hold herself against Orsted when she comes back to rescue Rudeus from being killed by the Dragon God.
  • Well, Excuse Me, Princess!: In her introduction, Eris has a lot of pride due to being a noble, so she looks down on Rudeus and refuses to take lessons from someone younger than her. When he talks back to her, she gets violent with him. Thankfully, Rudeus saving her from getting kidnapped humbles her and she starts listening to him.
