Heroes

    Mune

Voiced by: Michael Gregorio (French), Joshua J Ballard (English, both dubs)

A young lunar faun who's the newest guardian of the Moon.

  • Badass Adorable: He's a cute, fluffy blue faun. He's not badass at first, being seen as an awkward loser, but eventually becomes a Dream Weaver powerful enough to defeat Necross and his Evil Corruptors.
  • Blue Is Heroic: A blue-furred creature who serves as the protagonist.
  • Blue/Orange Contrast: He is blue while Sohone is orange. They have completely different personalities and strengths.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: Mune has a good heart, but he's very awkward and insecure. However, he becomes a stronger person both physically and mentally over the course of his adventure.
  • The Chosen One: Mune is unexpectedly chosen by Yule as the new guardian of the Moon. Mune faces a lot of opposition for being chosen at first. Leeyoon is furious because he (Leeyoon) was Yule's apprentice and was expected to be Yule's top pick, while Sohone, the new guardian of the Sun, thinks Mune is pathetic and will not succeed at his job. Because of this, Mune lacks confidence, and he is very clumsy and bad at his job at first. However, Mune gets better at it as the movie goes on, and eventually proves that Yule chose him for a reason.
  • Dream Weaver: He has the power to make people fall asleep and change their dreams, which virtually makes him a Reality Warper in the dream world itself.
  • Friend to All Children: Implied to be this, since before becoming the guardian he used his powers to give children good dreams. Also, at the end of the movie he’s seen playing with a bunch of children.
  • Punny Name: "Mune" sounds a lot like "Moon".
  • Quizzical Tilt: Does this quite a few times in the movie.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to Sohone's Red Oni.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Look at his big eyes! And his faun ears! And his fluffy little body!
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Sensitive Guy to Sohone's Manly Man. Sohone thinks he can win Glim over with his macho strength and personality, but Glim is more impressed by Mune's genuinely kind and caring nature.

    Glim

Voiced by: Izia Higelin (French), Nicole Provost (English, both dubs)

A young girl made of wax. Despite her overprotective father's wishes to keep her at home (for fear that she will melt), she wants to go out and see the world, and ends up joining Mune and Sohone on their adventure.

  • Achilles' Heel: She's vulnerable to both melting in the sun, and freezing in the cold. Phospho enchants her wax so that nothing but the sun itself can melt her, and even that doesn't seem to be an issue in the end, as the moon shard Mune gives her seemingly lets her go out into the sun without issue.
  • Clothing Appendage: Glim may seem to be wearing a poofy skirt, but it's made of wax just like the rest of her body.
  • Disney Death: She is melted by the sun, but Mune manages to resculpt her later, bringing her back to life.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She sacrifices herself by stoking the dying sun.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Falls for Mune towards the end, who is shown to be a nice guy.
  • Women Are Wiser: She's the only girl in the main trio, and the only one of them who really knows the history and legends of the movie's world. Justified in that she has been forced to stay at home for so long, which must have given her a lot of time for reading.

    Sohone

Voiced by: Omar Sy (French), Trevor Devall (English, 2014), Rob Lowe (English, 2017)

A warm-colored humanoid creature who was chosen as the new Guardian of the Sun.

  • The Big Guy: The physically largest and strongest member of the main trio.
  • Blue/Orange Contrast: He is orange while Mune is blue. They have completely different personalities and strengths.
  • Cat Folk: Downplayed. His body structure leans more towards human than cat, but he still subtly resembles a tiger or other big cat. This is most obvious with the stripes on his arms, his catlike nose, and the line going down from his nose to his mouth.
  • Chick Magnet: He has several women fawning over him prior to becomming the guardian of the sun.
  • Hot-Blooded: His whole body is constantly hot, and he has the temper to show for it.
  • It's All About Me: He starts out as a very egotistical guy who thinks he should get whatever he wants. However, he eventually Took a Level in Kindness.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to Mune's Blue Oni.
  • Reformed Bully: He starts out as a bully to Mune, mostly because he's jealous that Glim loves Mune instead of him. Eventually, though, he becomes a nicer guy, and he and Mune become friends.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to Mune's Sensitive Guy. Sohone thinks he can win Glim over with his macho strength and personality, but Glim is more impressed by Mune's genuinely kind and caring nature.
  • Super-Toughness: Sohone takes a heavy beating from Necross, a magma giant at least a hundred times bigger than he is, but can still fight back.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: His adventure in the Underworld humbled him greatly.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: To show that he's muscular.

Former Guardians

    Xolal

Voiced by: Jean Claude Donda (French), Michael Dobson (English, both dubs)

The guardian of the sun before Sohone. Physically tiny and blind.

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Implied by Yule after the ceremony.
Yule: [Sohone] is just as arrogant as you once were.
  • Formerly Fit: If the illustrations during the flashback of Necross's corruption are true, he was once very large and muscular.
  • Hero of Another Story: In the past, he is the one who battled the corrupted Necross, defeated him by banishing him into the Underworld, and taking his place as Guardian.
  • Long-Lived: He was guardian of the sun for 350 years, and is probably even older than that.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: He used to be much larger than he is now.
  • Retired Badass: At his prime, he was capable of punching Necross so hard that he went straight through the ground and into the underworld.
  • Taken for Granite: Like all the other guardians of the sun, he transforms into a statue after his time as guardian is over. Sohone accidentally breaks off one of his statue's arms, though.

    Yule

Voiced by: Benoit Allemane (French), Paul Dobson (English, both dubs)

The guardian of the moon before Mune. A massive and slow-speaking slug creature.

  • Long-Lived: He's been guardian for 350 years, and could be older than that.
  • Transflormation: After his time as guardian is up, he transforms into a massive flower, as do all the other guardians of the moon.

    Phospho

Voiced by: Patrick Poivey (French), Davey Grant (English, 2014), Jeff Dunham (English, 2017)

Initially introduced by Glim as a lightning demon that guards the entrance to the Underworld, Phospho is actually a former guardian of the moon who helps the trio during their trek into the Underworld in search of the sun.

  • Changed My Mind, Kid: Abandons the trio after Glim offends him, but comes back to save Sohone from the Corrupters.
  • Cowardly Lion: It's revealed that he abandoned his post as guardian of the moon when Necross turned evil, too afraid to fight such a powerful guardian. When the trio convinces him to help defeat Necross, he reveals himself to be incredibly powerful, meaning he probably could have defeated Necross if he had at least tried.
  • Dirty Old Man: Generally acts like a creepy old man:
    • He asks for a kiss from Glim.
    • He constantly makes remarks about how cute Glim is, and seems to enjoy touching her to warm her up when she solidifies. And his final words to Sohone echo the reason Sohone gave him for saving the sun: "For the ladies..."
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Gives almost all of his power to Sohone to help him resist the Corrupters, then uses what's left to self-destruct and destroy them.

The Underworld

    Necross

Voiced by: Éric Herson-Macarel (French), Davey Grant (English, both dubs)

An enormous molten rock monster who wants to destroy the sun and moon. As it turns out, he was a former Guardian of the Sun who was banished to the Underworld, and wants revenge on the world.

  • Big Bad: The main threat in the movie, and the one who comes up with the plan to destroy the sun.
  • Body Horror: Downplayed. In addition to the lava that makes up Necross' body, there is a flow of lava constantly spilling out of his chest. It's not the most horrific thing for a Living Lava creature to have, but it still looks unpleasant and adds an extra layer of scariness to his design for us non-lava-based viewers. It turns out that this lava flow used to be water before he fell into the magma of the Underworld. When Necross returns to his original form upon his death, the waterflow returns, and he becomes a waterfall.
  • Dark Is Evil: Necross is the Big Bad. Despite his glowing lava, Necross' body is mostly made of black rock. His goal is to destroy the sun and moon to plunge the world into eternal darkness.
  • Demonic Possession: He seems to be a victim of this. There is a Corrupter (one of the evil snake spirits) inhabiting his body, but it's hard to tell whether or not the Corrupter was actually controlling Necross this whole time, or if it's meant to be more symbolic.
  • Dying as Yourself: When Mune destroys the Evil Corruptor possessing Necross, Necross reverts to his original form before dying peacefully.
  • Evil Brit: He is the main antagonist, and he speaks with a posh accent in the English dub.
  • Evil Is Burning Hot: He's the main villain, and he lives in a world of lava and is made of lava and molten rock himself.
  • Evil Is Bigger: He's the main villain, and he's several times larger than most of the other characters.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: He's an evil, giant lava monster with a very deep voice.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: His greed allowed the Corrupter to burrow into his heart and turn him into a monster.
  • Heel–Face Turn: It turns out that Necross has been possessed by one of the Evil Corruptors. Mune destroys it, allowing Necross to return to his original, peaceful form before he dies.
  • Living Lava: Both him and his minions are made out of molten rock.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: His name combines "necro" and "cross." You'd better believe he's the villain.
  • The Night That Never Ends: Necross' goal is to destroy the sun and moon to create eternal darkness.
  • Redemption Equals Death: When Mune redeems Necross by turning him back into his original plant/rock form, Necross dies peacefully and turns into a waterfall.
  • Satanic Archetype: Subverted. Necross was formerly a respected Guardian of the Sun who got greedy one day and tried to keep the sun's power all for himself. He was defeated by a young Xolal, who banished Necross into the Underworld, where he fell into a pit of lava and was transformed into a giant molten beast. He now plots to get revenge on the world by destroying the sun and plunging the world into eternal darkness. He also sends out snakelike creatures to manipulate others into turning to the dark side. However, he only got greedy in the first place because he himself was corrupted by those snake creatures, and Mune manages to redeem him by using his powers to destroy the snake inhabiting Necross' body.
  • Tragic Villain: Necross is played like a typical Satanic Archetype, having been banished to the Underworld for being greedy and ambitious for power, and manipulating people with snakelike spirits called Corruptors. But then it's revealed that he only turned evil because he was possessed by a Corruptor himself, and he may or may not have been in control of his actions the whole time. Once the Corruptor inside him is destroyed, Necross smiles warmly at Mune for saving him, and dies peacefully.

    Mox and Spleen

Mox voiced by: Michel Mella (French), Sam Vincent (English, 2014), Patton Oswalt (English, 2017)
Spleen voiced by: Fabrice Josso (French), Brian Drummond (English, 2014), Ed Helms (English, 2017)

A duo of small rock monsters serving under Necross. Spleen is a nice guy who doesn't really want to be evil, and loves nature and flowers, but can't touch any of it without destroying it. Mox is more willing to be evil, but he's still comical.

  • Bumbling Henchman Duo: They are Necross' two comical henchmen.
  • Fat and Skinny: Mox is Fat, Spleen is skinny.
  • Living Lava: Like Necross, they are living lava/rock monsters.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: Spleen is one of the nicest characters in the film, and struggles to do even the most simple of evil deeds.
  • Nice Guy: Spleen is a friendly Minion with an F in Evil, but a bit sullen because of his inability to touch nature.
  • Transflormation: After Necross is defeated, they both become a plant creatures, with their lava replaced with grass and dirt. Spleen is thrilled by this transformation, but Mox is not happy at all.
  • Useless Spleen: Invoked. The henchman named Spleen is a Minion with an F in Evil who is not dedicated to his boss' evil plan and would rather frolic in nature.

    Leeyoon

Voiced by: Féodor Atkine (French), Michael Dobson (English, 2014), Christian Slater (English, 2017)

Yule's apprentice, who was to be chosen as his successor, but was passed over for Mune.

  • Big Bad Wannabe: Leeyoon is the first character set up to be the movie's villain. However, Necross sends the Evil Corruptors to corrupt Leeyoon, and Leeyoon ends up becoming little more than a pawn to Necross.
  • Butt-Monkey: The Universe just loves injuring Leeyoon's leg, one way or another.
  • Call to Agriculture: Implied to be Leeyon‘s new job at the end of the movie.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He turns evil because he's jealous of Mune for being chosen over him as guardian of the Moon.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: When the moon dies from a lack of sunlight, Leeyoon starts wailing uncontrollably.
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: Played with. Leeyoon's envy of Mune is initially played rather seriously, but Leeyoon turns out to be too manchildish and ineffective to do anything on his own. He's not exactly sympathetic at first, but becomes moreso at the end after his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Irony: Even though he has had years of training under Yule, he has no idea what to do when the moon starts dying.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: This guy was training for much of his life to inherit the title of Guardian of the Moon, whereas Mune knows nothing about being a Guardian. So Leeyoon saying he should be the Guardian is justified.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Starts being more respectful towards Mune when he proves himself worthy of being a Guardian.

    Evil Corruptors

Voiced by: Paolo Domingo (French), Paul Dobson (English, both dubs)

A race of mysterious, snakelike spirits that Necross sends out to brainwash others.

  • The Corruptor: Their goal is to manipulate and possess people to turn them evil. They do this to Leeyoon, along with Sohone, and even Necross himself.
  • Demonic Possession: They can possess people in moments of weakness and turn them to the dark side. It turns out that one of them did this to Necross, and that's the real reason that Necross turned evil.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: They are demonic spirits who speak with raspy voices in the English dub.
  • King Mook: The Corruptor possessing Necross is bigger than the others. Since Necross has control over the other Evil Corruptors during his own possession, it's possible that this big Corruptor is actually the leader.
  • Light Is Not Good: They glow with a radiant white light, and they're perhaps the most evil creatures in the movie.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: They're evil spirits resembling snakes.
  • The Man in Front of the Man: Necross sends out the Evil Corruptors to brainwash others with dark thoughts into serving Necross, so we can assume that the Evil Corruptors are Necross' minions. But it's revealed in the climax that Necross himself has been possessed by an Evil Corruptor the whole time, making it ambiguous as to whether Necross was ever in control, or if all his evil plans were actually the snake's.
