Uwasa, which means Rumor in English, are surreal Eldritch Abominations that appear in Witch-like Barriers. They are the manifestations of actual rumors that are spread through Kamihama City by Rumor Spreaders. They exist to spread and fulfill these rumors, attacking those who meet the rumors' conditions or who prevent the rumors' completion. They can only be defeated by doing the opposite of what the rumor represents. There are also lesser Uwasa who act as Familiars to the bigger one.

    In General
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: Of the rumors spread through out Kamihama City.
  • Arc Words: "Have you heard? Has anyone told you?" These words always prelude the flavor text of the Uwasas.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Just like the Witches, they look like deranged art pieces come to life.
  • Gossip Evolution: In a dark way. Rumors are kicked off by the mysterious beings called Rumor Spreaders. Then real people hear about and spread it as well, which helps give form to the Uwasa in question.
  • Make Way for the New Villains: In Arc 2, the Kimochi can use the bigger Uwasas as minions.

Uwasa of the Friendship Ending Staircase

Uwasa of the Friendship Ending Staircase

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/breakup_staircase_rumor.png
Have you heard? Has anyone told you? The Rumor of the Friendship Breaking Staircase. If you say, "Hmph! I hate you! We're over!" this staircase will appear, but you won't be able to see it. If you try to rekindle your friendship, it will take you away! All the girls in Kamihama say that a shadow girl who pushed her friend down the stairs will appear and catch you and make you clean the staircase forever. How scary!

An Uwasa that appears in Chapter 2 across Kamihama. If two people decide to end their friendship, then this Uwasa will set that breakup in stone. If one of those people later decides to apologize, then this Uwasa will send its minions to chain up the apologizing party and brainwash them into cleaning its staircase forever. In the Magia Record anime, it manifests as an actual staircase in Kamihama City University Affiliated School, upon whose stairs someone must write their own name and the name of the person they wish to break up with. Its Familiars are the Uwasa of the Friendship Ending Padlock.

  • Animate Inanimate Object: It takes the form of a large bell. Its familiars are living padlocks attached to stick figure-esque lengths of chain.
  • Holiday Mode: The Rumor of FM Kamihama is more or less a reskin of Uwasa of the Friendship Ending Staircase.
  • It's All Upstairs From Here: Its labyrinth consists of a number of very tall staircases with snake-like scales on the undersides. The Uwasa itself is hanging from an arch where two of the stairways meet.
  • Mook Maker: In the anime, it just keeps creating more of its familiars instead of actually fighting.

Uwasa of the Friendship Ending Padlock

Uwasa of the Friendship Ending Padlock

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enemy_7002_l.png
Have you heard? Has anyone told you? The Rumor of the Friendship Breaking Padlock. Many couples and friends put padlocks on bridges, capes, and observatories as a symbol of their bond. But what happens if you do the opposite and break it? The Friendship Breaking Padlock is there to destroy such bonds. It will swarm about and capture you, and that will be the end of you! According to the kids in Kamihama, it will lock you up in the Friendship Breaking Staircase! How horrible!

  • Meaningful Appearance: It looks like a padlock with a body shaped like a safe and wrapped in red tape and chains, in lined with its role as the warden of the Friendship Breaking Staircase.

    Uwasa of the Commoner's Horse

Uwasa of the Commoner's Horse

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enemy_6003_l.png
Have you heard? Has anyone told you? The Rumor of the Commoner's Horse. The god of this shrine is a fancy and kind horse! He's a cool guy that grants people's wishes, bringing them to who they are searching for. But too bad! As it turns out, it's all just an illusion. If you realize it's not real and deny it, the kind horse will turn into a gangster! Everyone in Mizuna Ward is talking about it!

An Uwasa that appears in Chapter 3 at the Mizuna Shrine as the enforcer of the Seance Shrine rumor. If a visitor writes the name of someone on its ema plaques, this Uwasa will allow its visitor to see that person. However, this image is only a fake, and at the moment the visitor denies that the image is real, this Uwasa will attack.

  • Adaptational Badass: While in the game it's a rather goofy-looking slug on wheels, the anime changes its design into a gigantic, serpentine dragon. The anime director (who designed the Uwasa) joked in a Twitter post that its appearance was so different because people farmed too many of its wheels.
  • Adapted Out: Its wheels are removed from its anime character design.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Its familiars are winged ema plaques connected to fluffy insect-like thoraxes and heads.
  • Bubble Gun: It can attack by shooting bubbles in both the game and the anime. In the anime, it even makes a Spam Attack out of it.
  • Glamour Failure: Played with in that its images of people's loved ones are created based on petitioners' memories. Iroha quickly sees through its illusion of Ui quickly since she still remembered relatively little about her. On the other hand, the Uwasa has a lot more to work with when creating an illusion of Mifuyu for Yachiyo. Though it appears glitched and staticky to Iroha, the illusion appears perfect to Yachiyo right down to Mifuyu's personality and combat abilities. Combined with the Uwasa hitting her with several witch's kisses, it takes Yachiyo an incredible effort of will to break free from its spell, even though she knows that "Mifuyu" is fake.
  • Holiday Mode: It, and the related lesser rumor have Chinese New Year reskins.
  • No-Sell: Every time our heroes strike it down, the damage dealt immediately regenerates. Yachiyo speculates because the Uwasa's function is to grant wishes, it can't be damaged by magical girls because their power is wish-based. Iroha then succumbs to her Soul Gem impurity and her Doppel absolutely lays waste on it because Doppels, just like Witches, are powered by curses.
  • Punny Name: On multiple level.
    • It's a horse because the Japanese word for "dusk", the time when the Uwasa appears, is "oumagatoki", which is homophone to "the time when a horse appears".
    • The claims that "the horse is a fake gentleman" is based on "machiuma", the Japanese for the hobby horse, which is stereotypical in feudal Japan as a peasant's toy (because only samurai's children can afford owning a real horse). So in this case, someone is pretending to be a prince on a stallion, only for it to be a conman commoner.
    • In anime, it has a serpentine body and long nose because the Japanese word for "seahorse" is "the dragon's inferior child".
  • Shout-Out: It is inspired by ema (絵馬), small plaques used in Buddhism and Shinto to make prayers and wishes; in this case the second kanji "馬" (horse).
  • You Don't Look Like You: In the game it looks like a bizarre slug-like mash-up of things. In the anime, it's a massive serpentine creature with an elephant's head.

    Uwasa of the Seance Tablet

Uwasa of the Seance Tablet

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enemy_7003_l.png
Have you heard? Has anyone told you? The Rumor of the Seance Tablet. This tablet looks like a huge winged bug, but it may just guide you to the Commoner's Horse! Look at it closely and you'll notice someone's name written on it. In Mizuna Ward they say that if you catch this tablet and put someone's body part on it, they will magically appear! Come on over!

  • Shout-Out: Like the horse uwasa, it is inspired by the ema plaques; in this case the first kanji "絵" (picture).

    Uwasa of the Misery Rhyton

Uwasa of the Misery Rhyton

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enemy_6004_l.png
Have you heard? Has anyone told you? The Rumor of the Misery Rython. Students from Sankyoin Academy are known for excelling in sports and studies. The secret lies in a large cup hidden underground! You can pour in any kind of misery, like accidents, stress, or even stomachaches! But beware, the cup is already full! The students in Sankyo Ward are saying the misery has started to overflow, so the cup decided to give back all that misery! What a disaster!

An Uwasa that appears in Chapter 4 in the sewers beneath Sankyoin Academy as the purveyor of the Misery Water rumor. It sends its minions to the streets of Kamihama with samples of its delicious Misery Water. Anyone who drinks of it will be cursed to suffer great misfortune exactly 24 hours after drinking, which its minions will helpfully remind the drinker of every hour.

In the anime adaptation, the Uwasa is moved to the horse tracks in Kosho Ward, and the water's purpose is changed to grant 24 lucky occurrences instead of a time limit.

    Uwasa of the Misery Owl

Uwasa of the Misery Owl

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enemy_7004_l.png
Have you heard? Has anyone told you? The Rumor of the Misery Owl. When you're tired and thirsty, a water station appears right in front of you! But beware! It's an illusion created by the Misery Owl that wants to make everyone absolutely miserable! But the students in Sankyo Ward are saying it also offers follow-up alerts! The Misery Owl is happy to let you know how much time you have left until calamity strikes! What a convenient service!

  • Ominous Owl: It is an owl-like Uwasa who will spread bad luck and misery.

    Uwasa of the Anonymous AI

Uwasa of the Anonymous AI

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enemy_6005_l.png

Voiced by: Hitomi Sasaki (Japanese), Laura Stahl (English)

Have you heard? Has anyone told you? The Rumor of the Anonymous AI. Ding! It's a suspicious message from an unknown sender! That's a trap set by the Anonymous AI that wants to lure you in! It learned this malicious behavior in the digital world and now it's all alone. People in Chuo Ward are saying it won't let go of its prisoner! What a stand-alone!

An Uwasa that appears in Chapter 5 within Chuo Ward's radio tower. It sends unsolicited messages to a girl's phone to lure them to leap off the radio tower, which causes them to fall into her realm. At least, that's what it normally does. Strangely enough, this Uwasa is now sending an SOS message, seeking a Magical Girl to rescue her current victim.

  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: In the anime, she takes on a more human form when Iroha shows up to rescue Sana.
  • Grew Beyond Their Programming: Being with Sana, who actually wants to be with her and treats her like a friend, teaches her compassion and kindness. It's what leads to her sending an SOS message asking someone to rescue Sana, because she knows that Sana being within her barrier for too long will be bad for her.
  • Heroic BSoD: One of her attacks causes the victim to bluescreen.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: When Sana agrees to go back to the real world with Iroha, Ai informs them that this will cause her to go berserk and asks them to destroy her. Even during the battle, she manages to hold herself back long enough to give Sana and Homura an opportunity to finish her.
    • This is changed in the anime, but still applies. Ai protects Sana from Alina's Doppel, getting its paint all over her, and she later tells Sana that Alina's paint is beginning to warp her mind. Therefore, she wants Sana to destroy her while she's still herself.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Another one of her attacks involves Magia Record dialog boxes, styled after the "Tap OK to download" messages that appear after patches. These message boxes also appear around her in her death animation.
  • Ripped from the Headlines: Her backstory (and picture) is based on that of Tay, an infamous Microsoft chatbot.

    Uwasa of the Anonymous Mail

Uwasa of the Anonymous Mail

Have you heard? Has anyone told you? The Rumor of the Anonymous Message! It sends 1 message, then 100, and 1,000! It's the postman that carries these messages for the Anonymous AI. It attaches a paper airplane to its back with a message written on it and gets blown away. Then, ding! Everyone receives an anonymous message! The people in Chuo Ward are saying sometimes it even shows its face on your screen. Who IS that?!

  • Courier: They are AI's courier minions.

    Uwasa of the Memory Curator

Uwasa of the Memory Curator

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enemy_6006_l.png
Have you heard? Has anyone told you? The Rumor of the Memory Curator! It printed all the books in its archive by itself. It's a total memory master! It can print all kinds of memories, but beware! If you ask to see its work but don't give your memory in return, it won't let you go anytime soon! People in Sakae Ward are saying it can even steal your whole past! Get me out of here!

An Uwasa appearing in Chapter 6 within an abandoned museum in Sakae Ward, it's the center of the Memory Museum rumor. Its museum allows anyone who enters to dive into the memories of one of its inhabitants. The Magius are currently using it as the site of their lectures on salvation.

  • Holiday Mode: During the Idol Festival event, a reskin of this Uwasa appeared, with Kyubey related prints instead of the usual.

Uwasa of the Memory Staff

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enemy_7006_l.png

Uwasa of the Chelation Land Ferris Wheel

Uwasa of the Chelation Land Ferris Wheel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enemy_6007_l.png
Have you heard? Has anyone told you? The Rumor of the Chelation Land Ferris Wheel. What in the world could be inside its whirling gondolas? Of course, it's stuffed with the garbage of human existence, like rage, sorrow, and uncertainty! No one's allowed to ride it because if they did they'd regret it at once! Everyone can free themselves from worry with this Ferris Wheel! It's a hot Rumor in Daito Ward! I wanna be happy!

An Uwasa appearing in Chapter 7 within the old Ferris Wheel Field in Daito Ward, it's the center of the Chelation Land rumor. It stores all the negative emotions of those visiting Chelation Land within its gondolas, allowing the visitors to truly release all of their troubles. However, once Chelation Land reaches maximum capacity, it'll make room by giving all of its current visitors a one-way ticket to the afterlife.

  • Shout-Out: The name Chelation refers to chelation therapy, a risky method of extracting heavy metals from a human body similar to Nemu extracting her own life force to create Uwasa, and to "elation" (a state of great happiness, similar to being in an amusement park)

Uwasa of the Chelation Land Mascot

It's a hot Rumor in Daito Ward! How princely!

It'll let you say whatever you wanna say and hear whatever you wanna hear, so try saying something to it! It'll be converted into beautiful words that will pluck the heartstrings of all who hear it. Then it'll be easy to bend them to your will! It's a hot Rumor among the Magius! As you command!

An Uwasa appearing in Chapter 8, which is the power source of the Receiver Pendant Rumor. The words that the Magius speak to this Uwasa are transmitted to the Feathers who were given Receiver Pendants, transforming them into mindless killing machines.

  • Adapted Out: It is replaced by a magnet Uwasa in the anime.
