Sunny Passion

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hot_passion_3.png
Sunny Passion's first single, "HOT PASSION!!" Members
Image Color: Passion Sunflower (Yuuna), Passion Wine Red (Mao)
Grade: Second Year (Season 1), Third Year (Season 2)
Birthday: October 11 (Libra) (Yuuna), December 2 (Sagittarius) (Mao)
Height: 159cm (Yuuna), 169cm (Mao)
Symbol: Sun (Yuuna), Moon (Mao)
Voiced by: Chihaya Yoshitake (Yuuna Hijirisawa), Yuna Yuuki (Mao Hiiragi) (Japanese); Dani Chambers (Yuuna Hijirisawa), Corey Pettit (Mao Hiiragi) (English)

A school idol duo from Kozushima Village composed of Yuuna Hijirisawa and Mao Hiiragi. Not only are they both popular and well-known in the current school idol world, they have won their way to the position of Love Live finalists in the past year, solidifying their status as a powerful force among school idols at large. Their influence and popularity played a large role in convincing Keke to travel to Japan to become a school idol.

    In General
  • The Ace: In Season 1, Sunny Passion is one of the top-ranked groups and is in a position to win the Love Live! tournament. They win, and are crowned the champions for that year.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Unlike predecessor groups A-RISE and Saint Snow, who were not initially meant to catch on with fans but unexpectedly did so anyway (with Saint Snow gaining Ascended Extra status), Sunrise seems to have caught on that rival groups are equally as marketable as the main ones, with Sunny Passion getting a magazine special series in the official Love Live! Days magazine a mere two months after their existence was revealed in the anime and before they've even properly interacted with any of the main cast.
  • Character Tic: "Pa!" while holding their arms up in an "パ" formation in front of them.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Sunny Passion is unlike A-RISE or Saint Snow and is more similar to Aqours, including their backstory (a school idol group in a remote seaside town) and motivations (performing for the school and the town they live in).
  • Friendly Rivalry: Also unlike A-RISE or Saint Snow, who started out neutral/antagonistic towards their corresponding rival unit and had to warm up to them over time, Sunny Passion starts out friendly from the get-go and shows up to compliment Keke and Kanon on their performance at Yoyogi Park while also inviting them to perform on their home turf.
  • Hero of Another Story: It is implied that they are going through a similar story as Aqours as they plan to win Love Live! back to back in order to immortalize their school and their home island in Love Live! history.
  • Idiot Hair: Yuuna sports a bright yellow one that contrasts with her darker gold-colored hair.
  • Officially Shortened Title: SunnyPa. It is an in-universe nickname that was used in the first two episodes. It wasn't until Season 1 Episode 3 that the audience learns the full name of the group.
  • Peacock Girl: Their costumes are inspired by carnival dresses.
  • The Quiet One: Mao, who isn't as talkative as Yuuna.
  • Scary Teeth: Yuuna sports shark-like teeth.
  • Stripperiffic: Their school idol costumes are inspired by carnival dresses, thus they show a lot of skin compared to the more modest costumes in the show.
  • Visual Pun: Their trademark Character Tic forms the katakana パ, which is read as "pa". The arms serve as the lines and the mouth serves as the circle.

Others/Supporting Characters

    Hana Hazuki (MAJOR SPOILERS!)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/llsp_hana_hazuki.jpg
Voiced by: Aya Endo (Japanese)

Ren's mother, and the wealthy benefactor who rescued the school building before it could be demolished, repurposing it into Yuigaoka Girls High School. She originally attended the school when it was a music academy, and was friends with Yuigaoka's Director during her high school years.

  • Idol Singer: When she was a student at Jinguu Music Academy, Hana became a school idol with her two friends in an attempt to prevent the school from closing down, founding the School Idol Club at Jinguu. Hana's unit notably predates the modern concept of school idols by at least several years, as the nameplate her unit created for the club is written in regular Japanese kanji rather than using the term "school idol".
  • Orphan's Plot Trinket: Her school idol diary. Unusually, her own daughter never even knew it existed until Kanon figured out the purpose of the second key and found the diary inside a locked box.
  • Posthumous Character: Hana passed away due to illness two years prior to the story, right after buying the building that would become Yuigaoka. As such, we only ever see her in flashbacks. She is also brought up frequently by the Director as the reason why Ren should give Kanon and her School Idol Club a chance.
  • Saving the Orphanage: She once attempted to save Jinguu Music Academy by becoming a school idol, but was unable to do so as a result of declining admission rates. Her passion for the school idol club and desire to preserve the memories she made at Jinguu resulted in her saving her school before it could be torn down by buying it. Ironically, doing so has put both her daughter and Yuigaoka in dire straits, as by the present time the Hazuki estate is broke and can't afford to keep the school open for much longer.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She is deceased by the time of the story, but she is responsible for purchasing the Yuigaoka school building with the remainder of the family money, and her presence and influence on her daughter Ren's life serves as a major element of Ren's character and a catalyst for events in the present day by extension.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: What we see of her during Ren's childhood reveals that she looks very similar to present-day Ren, just aged up and with her hair down rather than in a ponytail.

    Aria Shibuya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/llsp_aria.jpg
Voiced by: Akane Matsunaga (Japanese), Cat Protano (English)

Kanon's little sister.

  • Aerith and Bob: You'd have a hard time justifying "Aria" as a Japanese name compared to her sister Kanon.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Downplayed, but Kanon sees her antics as somewhat annoying and tends to snark at her.
  • Family Theme Naming: The Shibuya sisters are named after music terms.

    Kanon's mother
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/llsp_kanon_mother.jpg
Voiced by: Mamiko Noto (Japanese), Luci Christian (English)

Kanon and Aria's mother. She runs a local cafe.

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Kanon seems to think so.
  • Good Parents: What she actually is, most obviously at the end of Season 2, when she gives very timely words of support to Kanon as the latter is agonizing over whether to take the offer to study abroad in Vienna.

    Kanon's father
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/llsp_kanon_father.jpg

Kanon and Aria's father, who works from their home as a translator.

  • The Faceless: Only his lower face is visible.
  • One Head Taller: He seems to be exactly one head taller than his wife and daughters...which perfectly places his upper face offscreen while they're in frame.
  • Workplace-Acquired Abilities: Indirectly so, but the fact that he's a translator and has numerous foreign language dictionaries around does come into play for Kanon, first in completing "Tiny Stars" using Keke's partially Chinese notes, and later in coming up with Liella!'s name, which uses French and Spanish.

    Manmaru / Roundy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/llsp_manmaru.jpg
Voiced by: Anna Mugiho (Japanese), Khoi Dao (English)

The Shibuya family's pet owl and the cafe's mascot.

  • Cute Owl: Serves as the cafe's ever-popular mascot.
  • Dub Name Change: The Funimation subbed version translated Manmaru's name as "Roundy" in Season 1 Episode 1, before changing it back to Manmaru to coincide with Chisato's rap in Season 1 Episode 2; and in the English dub, Manmaru's original name was kept instead of Roundy, averting this trope.

    Yuigaoka's Director
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/llsp_headmistress.jpg
Voiced by: Romi Park (Japanese)

The headmistress of Yuigaoka. She and Ren's mother, Hana Hazuki, were friends from high school.

  • Motherly Side Plait: It shows her motherly side despite her professional demeanor.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: In Season 1 Episode 2, she allows Keke and Kanon to establish their school idol club despite Ren's refusal, on the condition that they participate and win first place in the Yoyogi School Idol Festival.
  • Secret-Keeper: She knows that Hana Hazuki was a school idol and gave the old clubroom to Kanon and Keke.
  • Voice Change Surprise: Ren and Kanon are shocked when her voice gets lighter in private. She simply insists this is her natural tone.

    Nanami, Yae and Kokono
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/llsp_nanami_yae_kokono.jpg
From left to right: Nanami, Yae and Kokono
Voiced by: Azumi Waki (Nanami), Miyu Tomita (Yae), Haruka Shiraishi (Kokono)(Japanese), Ryan Bartley (Nanami), Natalie Hoover (Yae), Morgan Lea (Kokono)(English)

Kanon's trio of friends.

Nanami later becomes the Student Council treasurer.

  • Numerical Theme Naming: Much like the friend trios from Love Live! and Sunshine!!, they are named after numbers, this time being "7", "8" and "9" respectively.
  • Only One Name: Averted for Nanami (whose last name is Nanakusa), a first in the franchise for the friend trios.
  • Reused Character Design: School idols that look like them appeared in Love Live! The School Idol Movie where Kotori invited them to join the Sunny Day Song live.

    Keke's older sister

Keke's unnamed sister.

  • Cool Big Sis: She takes care of Keke even from the distance.
  • The Ghost: She's only had a brief appearance in Season 1 Episode 3 when she makes call to Keke.

    Saya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/llsp_saya.jpg
Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa (Japanese)

The Hazuki family's maid.

  • Undying Loyalty: Her reason to remain working for Ren despite her lacking the money to pay her further.

    Chibi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/llsp_chibi.jpg
Voiced by: Anna Mugiho (Japanese), Ben Balmaceda (English)

Ren's pet dog.

  • Big Friendly Dog: Chibi's first appearance has it chase the girls to play. Chibi is also around the size of Kanon.
  • Distinguishing Mark: Chibi has a heart-shaped mark on the right ear.
  • Expy: Of Shiitake, although it's willing to playfully chase all of the girls rather than just one of them.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Which give it its old dog appearance.
  • Ironic Name: Chibi, a Big Friendly Dog, has a name that means "small".
  • Old Dog: Ren had Chibi as a puppy when she was still little. Now that Ren's in high school, Chibi is old in dog years.

    Sumire's little sister
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/llsp_imouto.jpg
Voiced by: Misaki Watada (Japanese), Katy Johnson (English)

Sumire's little sister.

  • Miko: Like her older sister Sumire, she works as a miko in their family's shrine.
  • No Name Given: Simply credited as Sumire's little sister.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Looks like a child version of Sumire with shorter hair.

    Kinako's mother
Voiced by: Ikue Otani (Japanese)

Kinako's mother.
