Shen Family

    Nicky Shen
Played by: Olivia Liang

Our protagonist, a Chinese-American woman who fled to a Shaolin monastery for three years. She returns home after the monastery is attacked and her shifu is killed

  • Action Girl: She's an expert martial artist.
  • Agent Scully: Nicky's reaction to anything that might be supernatural. She sees the sword glow, but says it might just be reflections from a lightning storm. Ryan says she "walks on air" but she insists it was just an ordinary high jump. However, she later changes her mind and comes to believe in the weapons' magic.
  • Berserk Button: Whenever someone says anything bad of Pei-Ling, she gets angry. Especially if it also involves Zhilan.
  • Bully Hunter: With a dash of Chronic Hero Syndrome. It's suggested in "Guidance" that Nicky has been always like this growing up in San Francisco while in school, and confirmed in "Transformation" when Ryan mentions that he and Nicky had a codeword so that Nicky would rescue him from bullies when needed.
  • Composite Character: Some of her backstory is from Kwai Chang Caine (his training at a Shaolin monastery and leaving it after it's razed) and Peter Caine (his disbelief in supernatural things and his reunion with his estranged father).
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life:
    • Before the events of the series, Nicky dropped out of Harvard Law School to get away from her controlling mother. She joined a martial arts monastery which for a time gave her some meaning, until Pei-Ling was killed by Zhilan. Nicky returns home as she has nowhere else to go and tries to reconnect with her family. She ultimately decides to take up the quest to avenge Pei-Ling and stop Zhilan.
    • Season 3 ends with a lesser crisis for purpose, which ends in Nicky deciding to leave San Francisco and travel the world helping people.
  • Experienced Protagonist: Nicky trained for three years in a Shaolin monastery at the start of the series.
  • Heroic Lineage: She learns from her mother that she is a descendant of Liang Daiyu, the original owner of the sword.
  • A Hero To Her Hometown: By Season 2, she's well-known in her neighborhood as a local heroine.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Before she married Jin, Mei-Li left China and went to live in the US against her parents' wishes. Nicky mentions that holding a grudge must run in the family.

    Althea Shen-Soong
Played by: Shannon Dang

Nicky's sister. Due to the downfall of her planned startup firm in Season 2, she decides to work with Evan as a private investigator as a part-time job in Season 3 while keeping her hacking activities on the down low to avoid being easily discovered.

  • Bridezilla: She's insistent on making sure that everything about her upcoming wedding to Dennis is perfect. This is initially played for comedy, but it is eventually revealed that it's her way of exercising control over her otherwise out-of-control life after her boss sexually abused her.
  • Dark Secret: Althea was sexually abused by her boss. Thus far, the only person she has told about it is Nicky. Eventually, she also tells Ryan and Dennis, planning to publicly come forward in the near future.
  • The Fashionista: She is often seen in glamorous outfits and sometimes gives her sister fashion advice.
  • Playful Hacker: Or as she calls it, "Creative firewall jumping."
  • The Precious, Precious Car: She has a vintage car named "Clementine", which she wanted so badly she stalked the lot and scared off other potential buyers. Then one day Dennis borrows it and it gets stolen. She is unable to replace it even months after the fact.
  • Private Detective: In Season 3, she joins Evan's PI firm as a detective and hacker.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Nicky and Henry, though later for Nicky and Bo after Henry leaves. She apologizes for this when she discovers Bo was a bad guy.

    Ryan Shen
Played by: Jon Prasida

Nicky's brother.

  • Agent Mulder: Ryan was initially the only one who believed there was something supernatural about Nicky's fighting talent.
  • Gayngst: Nicky's brother Ryan came out to his parents about a year before Nicky's return. They aren't outright homophobic but they prefer to act like it never happened. He resents Nicky for leaving because she was the only person in their family he felt safe coming out to.
  • Hospital Hottie: He's a medical student who works at the San Francisco Chinese Community Center. He later gets a residency.
  • Straight Gay: He has no stereotypical traits of gay men.

    Mei-Li Shen
Played by: Kheng Hua Tan

Nicky's mother. She comes from a Beijing background.

  • Dark Secret: She is a descendant of Liang Daiyu, the original owner of the sword, and by extension so is Nicky. Also her sister, who she claimed died as a teenager, actually grew obsessed with the sword and ran away from home to find it.
  • Dating What Mommy Hates: Mei-Li didn't approve of Nicky's relationship with Evan, ultimately leading to them breaking up. She's not too fond of Henry, either. She gets better.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Mei-Li's arc over the first season involves her learning to open up more, allow for change, and accept her daughter for who she is.
  • Education Mama: She had Nicky learn the Harvard Fight Song on the piano when she was five.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: We never actually hear her sing, but her family's reactions when she takes the stage during karaoke imply she's this.
  • My Beloved Smother: Nicky's opinion of her mother Mei-Li. She gets better.
  • Supreme Chef: Turns out to be this — she was the one who created the original Harmony Dumplings menu, but got so busy with front-of-house business she left this behind until she decides to get back in the kitchen and reignite her passion.

    Jin Shen
Played by: Tzi Ma

Nicky's father. He comes from a Cantonese background.

  • Former Teen Rebel: He says that he and Henry are not that different when his wife expresses concern about all the time Nicky is spending with him.
  • Henpecked Husband: Zigzagged. He's often on the defensive, trying to take the side of reason and moderation in his interactions with his overbearing wife, but has moments where he really stands up to her. In the wake of the Liang Daiyu reveal, he temporarily separates from Mei-Li, but following their reunion they are on more equal footing.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Zigzagged. He is much more welcoming towards Nicky when she returns home than his wife. However, he didn't handle Ryan coming out of the closet very well. He later reveals he was proud of his son's coming out, but wasn't sure how to express it at the time, apologizing to Ryan for the miscommunication.

Shen Extended Family

    Dennis Soong
Played by: Tony Chung

Althea's fiancé, and later husband.

  • Action Figure Justification: Discussed on two counts when Althea catches Dennis painting Dungeons & Dragons mini figures in "Reunion".
Althea: Ooh. Your orcs are looking good.
    Dennis: Those are goblins.
    Althea: Is there a difference?
Dennis: Tolkien didn't really draw a huge distinction, but later fantasy—
Althea: Polite question. Real question: Why are you working on your dolls?
    Dennis: Minis.
    Althea: (indulging him) Minis. Minis.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Dennis reveals in Season 2 that he considers Althea still out of his league, even after all this time, and is afraid one day she'll wake up and realize that if he makes a big enough mistake. This stems from their past, since she was the hot, smart cheerleader when they were in high school, and they only started going out after he became more handsome. Althea reveals she would have gone out with his nerdy teen self if he had only asked.
  • Cope by Creating: If he's not preparing for a game, Dennis likes to paint D&D minifigures when he's stressed.
  • Nerds Are Sexy: On the same night Althea's bachelorette party featured a "Pin the Abs on the Dennis" game, Dennis is revealed to have spent his own bachelor party playing Dungeons & Dragons in full cosplay. Fittingly, while Nicky and Henry are weirded out, Althea finds it appealing.
  • Prenup Blowup: His wealthy parents disapprove of his marriage to Althea, who comes from a working-class family. They worry she's a Gold Digger and urge Dennis to sign a prenup. Dennis stands up for Althea.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Male version. Before leaving the US, Nicky only remembered him as a nerdy mathlete. It laters turns out Dennis still has some insecurity over this (see above).

    Po Po
Played by: Fiona Fu, Wei Jen Lee (young)

Nicky's maternal grandmother, or "Po Po."

  • No Name Given: She is only credited as "Po Po", which means "maternal grandmother."
  • Refusal of the Call: She was given the sword by Zhang Fang-Su, Zhilan and Pei-Ling's mother. However, she was terrified of its power and gave it back.

    Mei-Xue/Sandra Yang

Played by: Christina Ma

Nicky's aunt and Mei-Li's sister.

  • Fling a Light into the Future: Nicky learns that her aunt is dead, but left behind a number of tape recordings to advise her on how to find the weapons of Liang Daiyu.
  • The Ghost: She's been mentioned several times but doesn't appear until a flashback in episode 10.
  • Heroic Wannabe: She grew obsessed with the Liang Daiyu's sword and her Heroic Lineage, leaving her family and never returning. Mei-Li told her family that her sister died as a teenager.
  • Posthumous Character: Nicky goes looking for her only to find her grave at her cabin in Canada.

    Mia Yang

Played by: Vanessa Yao

Mei-Xue's daughter and Nicky's cousin.

  • The Bus Came Back: Mia returns in "The Scepter" when Nicky and Zhilan visit the monastery. Turns out to be Back for the Dead when Xiao takes her bloodline and life energy.
  • Heroic Lineage: Even more so than her cousin. She is the daughter of a Warrior and a Guardian, making her of special interest to Russell Tan.
  • No Social Skills: Is clearly very awkward at the New Year's Eve dinner around her newfound family. She was raised by Mei-Xue in isolation in her cabin.
  • Put on a Bus: Mia is sent to Nicky's old temple at the end of Season 2 so she can learn to balance her Hybrid powers and emotions.
  • Street Urchin: Spent some time as this after her mother's death.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: How Nicky describes her martial arts skills.
  • Would Hit a Girl: In "Destruction", she kidnaps Juliette with Zhilan and has no problem harming her to get to Russell.

Allies

    Evan Hartley
Played by: Gavin Stenhouse

Nicky's ex-boyfriend and an Assistant District Attorney. As of Season 3, he runs Evan Hartley Legal Services.

  • Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder: When Nicky comes back to America after three years, she finds that he has a new girlfriend.
  • Amicable Exes: Nicky and Evan are still on good terms following their breakup.
  • Friend on the Force: He's an ADA, not a cop, but he otherwise functions as this to the Shens. At least until he gets fired for deleting evidence for Nicky in Season 2.
  • Hello, Attorney!: Evan's a good-looking attorney working at the San Franciso City government as the ADA.
  • Maligned Mixed Marriage: Nicky's mother disapproved of their relationship and sent Nicky to a matchmaking session in China. Ironically, they ended up becoming friends after the fact.
  • Token White: Evan is the only white person in the main cast (and even then, his actor is from Hong Kong).

    Henry Yan
Played by: Eddie Liu

A friend of Ryan's who studies Chinese myth and legend.

  • Badass Bookworm: He is Nicky's main source of information regarding the stolen sword. He also helps her defeat a couple of Triad thugs.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: "Clementine" reveals that Henry's father abandoned the family but is involved in some kind of mission. The mission is revealed to be protecting Henry from the Wan Zai, since he reassembled an ancient mystical compass as a child that marked him as the Compass Bearer, a power which would make him a target of the Wan Zai and others.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: "Hand" mentions that Henry has a juvenile record from 2009. "Clementine" reveals that his father abandoned him as a child.
  • Supernatural Sensitivity: Gains this in Season 3 after he becomes the Compass Bearer, able to detect magical energy and receive visions about it.

    Zhang Pei-Ling
Played by: Vanessa Kai

Nicky's shifu (mentor) at the Shaolin monastery.

    Joe Harper
Played by: Bradley Gibson

Ryan's boyfriend and an activist.

  • Put on a Bus: Joe took a dream job out of state near the end of Season 1, leading to him and Ryan breaking up.
  • Straight Gay: Like his boyfriend, he does not act like a stereotypical gay man at all.
  • Twofer Token Minority: He's black and gay.

    Sebastian
Played by: JB Tadena

A new line cook at Harmony Dumplings who eventually becomes Ryan's new boyfriend.

  • Dark and Troubled Past: Sebastian accidentally killed someone in a bar fight, which got him sent to prison on manslaughter charges and caused his family to disown him.
  • Hidden Depths: Sebastian reveals he is also a skilled martial artist when fending off Althea's former boss, initially making Ryan suspicious of his background.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: A variant. Sebastian confesses that he wants to settle down and belong somewhere, and is afraid to screw things up with Mei-Li by dating Ryan because of it.
  • Straight Gay: Sebastian demonstrates no camp characteristics and in fact is quite tough.
  • Supreme Chef: He has no formal training but has worked in restaurants all over the world, including Beijing and Paris. He ends up on the cover of a magazine for his work.

    Daniel Yan
Played by: Terry Chen

Henry's father and a member of the Wan Zai.

    Yuen Oye
Played by: Dorren Lee

The leader of the Wan Zai and rival to Daniel.

  • Artifact Collection Agency: Leader of one.
  • Married to the Job: Has no life outside the Wan Zai and expects the same of Daniel. She chides him for letting his love for his son get in the way of his duties.
  • Pet the Dog: Clashes with Daniel and eventually kicks him out of the group, but after his death she promises a proper Wan Zai burial and gives his belongings to Henry.

    Nadia
Played by: Marissa Cuevas

An associate of Evan's from the DA's office.

    Bo
Played by: Ben Levin

A mysterious vigilante based in Oakland.

  • Even Evil Has Standards: Bo suspects that Xiao wouldn't release the souls of those killed in the other realm. He becomes pissed and wonders if Xiao was just using him from the start.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Stays in the shadow dimension to protect Nicky and their world from the shadows that have targeted him.
  • Mysterious Past: He's pretty vague about where he learned to fight or how he got into vigilantism. He's also as skilled a hacker as Althea and figures out how to defuse a bomb.
  • Uncertain Doom: Last seen getting attacked by lethal shadows after sending Nicky back home in "Loss".
  • Vigilante Man: Monitors gangs and beats up criminals, which is how he crosses path with Nicky.
  • Walking Spoiler: Halfway through Season 3 shows that he's working with Xiao and was trained by her ever since he was a kid while stuck in an alternate realm as a Traveler. And he also worked with Xiao as the Harvester.

    Carrie
Played by: Kim Rhodes

A businesswoman who helps Mei-Li rescue Harmony Dumplings.

  • Actor Allusion: Not the first time Kim Rhodes has played a "Carey".
  • Honest Corporate Executive: Played with. According to Kim Rhodes's interviews, Carrie means well and genuinely wants to help Mei-Li. In her first appearance, she goes behind her partner's back to give Mei-Li advice on how to negotiate a better deal with her own company. However, she still has to make sure Harmony Dumplings makes money and follows the terms of their contract, which means she has to be strict sometimes.
  • Lady in a Power Suit: Generally wears a blazer over a dress for her meetings.
  • Nothing Personal: Often has to act on behalf of corporate, even when she doesn't want to. (However, according to showrunners, she had a less-than-objective reason to dig into Sebastian's past, meaning she's not all business.)

Antagonists

    Zhang Zhilan
Played by: Yvonne Chapman

The person who attacked the monastery, killed Pei-Ling and stole an ancient sword. She's trying to convince Mia to assassinate Russell to get justice for Mei-Xue.

  • Big Bad: Of Season 1. She's the one who killed Pei-Ling and stole her sword, making her the target of Nicky's quest.
  • Cain and Abel: She's definitely the Cain in her relationship with Pei-Ling right down to murdering her sister.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Over the course of the series she murders everyone she works closely with, makes a deal with, or collaborates with in any way, even people she claims to love, like Kerwin.
  • The Corrupter: Tries to make Mia go after Russell Tan for vengeance since he can't afford to murder her.
  • Daddy's Girl: In flashbacks, it's clear she worshiped her father, even as he neglected her health. When her sister accidentally killed him, Zhilan refused to forgive her for it, even years later.
  • Dark Action Girl: A vicious Chinese woman who's after the artifacts. She is a deadly martial artist who killed Pei-Ling and goes toe to toe with Nicky, Pei-Ling's later student, without difficulty. Zhilan wears black in her first appearance too, fittingly.
  • The Dreaded: Nicky mentions in "Pilot" to Evan that Chinese law enforcement is scared of facing her.
  • Enemy Mine: By the time Season 3 is rolling, Zhilan is back on Earth and works with Nicky just to take down the Harvester and Xiao.
  • Hero Killer: She's responsible for killing Pei-Ling and nearly killed Nicky in Yunnan Province.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the Season 2 finale, she sacrifices herself to stop Russell Tan from escaping.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Given her painful backstory she spent her childhood in pain due to her poor health; her sister accidentally killed their father and then abandoned her and her intention to use the weapons to reshape the world so that she 'would never be betrayed again'.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Well, she does fight with Nicky many times. In "Destruction", she kidnaps Juliette and threatens to get her killed.
  • The Atoner: In Season 3, she helps Nicky and company (including Mia) to face Xiao.

    Tony Kang
Played by: Tristan Liu

A mob boss who threatens Nicky's family.

  • The Bus Came Back: He is defeated and arrested in the first episode. In the first episode of Season 2, it's mentioned that he's gotten out of prison.
  • False Friend: Mei-Li laments that he tricked her into trusting him for a loan by being a seemingly loyal, upstanding customer to the store for years, even pretending to care about her kids, only to turn up the brutality once the family was in his clutches.
  • I Own This Town: He's one of the most powerful people in Chinatown.
  • Loan Shark: Gives Nicky's parents a loan with a very high interest rate and threatens to kill them if they don't pay.
  • Starter Villain: He's the main antagonist of the first episode.
  • The Triads and the Tongs: His organization.

    Chase Matheson
Played by: KC Clyde

Althea's old boss, who sexually assaulted her.

  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: He uses his power and position to rape women and keep them from speaking out.
  • The Ghost: He's been mentioned several times in Season 1 but doesn't appear onscreen until Season 2.
  • Resigned in Disgrace: Season 2 reveals he had to step down from his job, though he apparently still has a lot of power and influence.
  • Sexual Extortion: What he did to Althea and several other women.

    Kerwin Tan
Played by: Ludi Lin

A Taiwanese billionaire whom Zhilan partners with to obtain the weapons.

  • Collector of the Strange: He is related to the Mr. Tan that Pei-Ling and Zhilan's father originally tried to sell the sword to. He also has a scroll that will help Zhilan learn more about the weapons.
  • Enemy Mine: In "The Bell", Kerwin agrees to help Nicky and Henry steal the bell from his father just because he just wants to "stick it to his face".
  • Millionaire Playboy: Well, billionaire.
  • Morality Pet: For Juliette - while she still considers him a rival for their father's attention, she is also the one who saved his life and covers for him when he appears to be trying to help.
  • The Unfavorite: Compared to his sister Juliette.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: At least, he was until he teamed up with Zhilan to steal all the weapons.

    Russell Tan
Played by: Kee Chan

The billionaire owner of Tan Consolidated and Kerwin's father.

  • Big Bad: Goes from the Greater-Scope Villain of Season 1 to the true Big Bad of Season 2.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Has a team of mercenaries in his employ, and is noted to have made a lot of shady dealings. He also owned a factory whose pollution was responsible for Zhilan's early health problems and her mother's death.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: While Zhilan is indisputably the Big Bad of Season 1, part of the reason she wants the power of the weapons is to keep it out of the hands of Russell, who would do even worse things with it. His influence and search for the weapons also tore Zhilan's family apart, kicking off the series's events. At the end of Season 1, he kills the sorcerer and nearly kills Zhilan and Nicky. Season 2 reveals him to be buying up land in San Francisco and has several rich and influential people in his pocket, including along with politicians and Evan's boss.
  • Tragic Villain: Lost his eldest son a number of years ago, which still seems to hit him hard. Subverted — considering his master plan was to take over the body of one of his children to gain immortality in a younger body, he was likely just grieving the loss of his best possible vessel.

    Juliette Tan
Played by: Annie Q.

Russell Tan's daughter and Kerwin's sister.

  • Daddy's Little Villain: The daughter of Russell Tan and much more involved in his plots than her brother. In "Destruction", he's pissed that Zhilan and Mia kidnap her.
  • Pet the Dog: While she is fine with doing her father's dirty work, she is also the one who insists on saving Kerwin when their father would have left him for dead, and she shows some conflict over the damage she did to Eric Han.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Between her and Kerwin. Invoked by their father.
  • The Unfavorite: How she sees herself compared to Raymond and Kerwin due to her father's sexism. Turns out it's not true. Russell genuinely loved her and wanted her to take over the company. She turned on him for nothing.

    Xiao
Played by: Vanessa Kai (while disguised as Pei-Ling Zhang), Jennifer Khoe (original form)

The alchemist who created the Warrior and Guardian bloodlines.

  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: She appears to Nicky in the form of Pei-Ling, and retains that appearance throughout the rest of Season 2. Once she gets her scepter back, she can switch between her original appearance and Pei-Ling's at will, or even Nicky's!
  • Big Bad: Of Season 3.
  • Control Freak: Turns out to be her ultimate goal — between the Emperor locking her away and the Warrior and Guardian bloodlines rebelling against her, she decides to destroy the bloodlines and control the entire world.
  • Dimensional Traveler: Xiao is revealed in Season 3 to have this ability, on top of her alchemical talents. She is able to train Bo in how to use them.
  • Grand Theft Me: She somehow gains control over Pei-Ling's body after her resurrection. She also possesses Sebastian in "Betrayal" after being temporarily separated from Pei-Ling.
  • Mad Scientist: Did a lot of heinous things to help an ancient Emperor discover immortality. Eventually, the Emperor got fed up when she proposed he sacrifice his own son.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Among her many misdeeds, she pretended to be Pei-Ling in order to stop Nicky from saving Mia, and made a young Bo reliant on her so he would do whatever she asked of him, lying to him so he would think he was doing the right thing..

    The Harvester

A mysterious being who wanders the afterlife realm containing Guardian and Warrior spirits, killing them off.

  • Black Cloak: What he wears.
  • Deadly Scratch: One nick from his sword causes the spirits to disintegrate.
  • Dimensional Traveler: Shares this ability with Xiao, which he uses to travel between the afterlife realm and Earth.
  • The Dragon: To Xiao. He works for her and supplies her with spirit energy from the spirits he kills.
  • What Have I Done: When he realizes he is not sending souls he harvests to the afterlife, but turning them into fuel for Xiao's magic.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: He first learned he was a traveler when he accidentally sent himself to an apocalyptic, shadow-infested dimension as a child, with no way home.
  • Walking Spoiler: The Harvester is actually Bo.

San Francisco City

    District Attorney Hughes

The city's district attorney.

  • Amoral Attorney: She's a corrupt attorney who's willing to remove Evan from an investigation on orders from Russell Tan.
  • Blackmail: She was pressured into helping Tan to protect her family.

    Anthony Chan
A young up-and-coming local politician hoping to help Chinatown after the earthquake.
  • Blackmail: Delta Security Endeavors uses an incident protecting his family to get him to support an amoral bill. They also force him to release the attack ad against Nicky.
  • Momma's Boy: Mei-Li basically sics his mother on him after the attack ad against Jin goes out.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Downplayed, but Jin watched Anthony grow up and Jin gave Anthony a lot of support early in his campaign. When Jin decides to run his own campaign and Anthony turns against him, it's hard on Jin.

Other

The legendary founder of female Shaolin. The original owner of the sword.

  • Heroic Lineage: She's Nicky and Mei-Li's ancestor.
  • Posthumous Character: She lived during the Tang Dynasty.
  • Precursor Hero: According to legend, during the Tang Dynasty she single-handedly repelled a band of raiders who attacked her village, and later began training women in martial arts.

    Simon Lau
Played by: Michael Bow

A K-pop star and a Warrior and keeper of the meteor hammer.

  • The Bus Came Back: He's killed by Kerwin and Zhilan in Season 1. He reappears in Season 3 where he and Zhilan are in the same afterlife realm. Obviously, he's not happy to see her.
  • Celebrity Masquerade: He's the bearer of a supernatural weapon and works as a K-pop star.

    Suyin
Played by: Yu Matsushita

The first Hybrid, born by a forbidden crossing of Warrior and Guardian bloodlines.
