• Complete Monster: Season 2 has a pair of Corrupt Corporate Executives:
  • Russell Tan is a corrupt businessman who was the true murderer of Nicky Shen's aunt years ago. With an iron-fisted control over San Francisco, Russell's dealings lead to numerous deaths. Revealing himself to have no care for his children, Russell murders his daughter and his son, possessing the latter, before heading into the realm of spirits to retrieve a powerful amulet to make himself invincible, with no care that this will destroy every spirit inside.
  • Chase Matheson, appearing in "Jyu Sa", is a corrupt businessman who targets vulnerable women at his place of business. Using typical grooming efforts, Chase proceeds to get them drunk in private meetings before sexually assaulting them. With Althea Shen-Soong as one victim, it is revealed she is far from the only one. Upon being exposed, Chase takes the chance to try to mock Althea first chance he gets.
• Critical Dissonance: While critics seemed to like the show, giving it "generally favorable" reviews (65% on Metacritic and 79% on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences were not so kind, rating it 46% on Metacritic and 45% on both Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB.
• Fight Scene Failure: An awful lot of punches and kicks throughout the show very visibly miss their target.
• Les Yay: Between Nicky and Zhilan. In Episode 6, Zhilan whispers "I don't need men"^note Actually referring to the henchmen Nicky and Henry just defeated right before frisking Nicky, and in the Season 2 finale the two held hands more than once.
• Nightmare Fuel: What's worse than the discovery of a specific musical note that, when played, can shatter someone's eardrums on the spot? The implication that using this with a large bell is what caused the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.
• Portmanteau Couple Name: Henry and Nicky are called "Hicky".
• WTH, Costuming Department?:
  • Zhilan easily has the best wardrobe on the show, but it's so obviously made up to be villainous-looking, with dark, sexy clothing and vampy makeup that it can look really silly in comparison to the more mundane clothing everyone else has.
  • The series takes place in present day, but most of the clothes (especially Althea's) look about a decade out of style.
  • Nicky's makeup (particularly her lipstick) is way too warm-toned for her.
