    Koishi Komeiji

Koishi Komeiji

Debuted in: Subterranean Animism

"My hat is my friend. It helps me relax <3"

Younger sister of Satori Komeiji, with the power to manipulate people's subconscious.

  • Adaptational Villainy: Canon Koishi is nowhere near as psychotic and violent as this Koishi is.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Incredibly silly but also incredibly dangerous in combat, despite more or less fighting on instinct alone due to being an Empty Shell, as shown by her mauling Meiling and Flandre because they annoyed her.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Koishi isn't completely evil, but she's definitely not playing by anyone else's sense of morality and due to her heart being closed, she's just doing things as she pleases. She apparently gets better after assimilating Yukari's head.
  • Berserk Button: Many things can provoke Koishi into lashing out, but above all else, damaging her hat sends her into a sociopathic rage.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: When she's not murderously crazy most of the time, she's rather ditzy.
  • Companion Cube: Her hat, which she claims is her friend.
  • Cute and Psycho: In a very disturbing kind of way.
  • Combat Tentacles: All satori creatures have this.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She and Satori used to live as Puppeteer Parasites, taking control of dead animals in order to survive. Koishi's, whose host was a cat, saw the beauty of the animal world and grew curious of a young woman who married her boyfriend. Unfortunately, said woman was abandoned by her husband and left behind with her baby. She gained post-partum depression and killed the baby while Koishi was watching. Koishi took control of the dead baby to kill the mother and used her body as her new host. Unfortunately, with her new body, she heard the colective minds of a multitude in the streets who refused to help her. The strain became too much for her and she closed her eye. After that, she became the Cute and Psycho girl we see here now.
  • Eye Scream: Thanks to Yukari's "The Reason You Suck" Speech on Episode 19, she opens her third eye with a broken glass.
  • Fingore: While trapped behind a door locked up by Satori, Koishi claws at it until her nails/claws snap off.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Was cut short of pulling Flandre's eye out/finishing her off by Satori slapping her, though less of a case of being brought back to her senses and more like her blindly obeying her beloved sister.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Tends to say hurtful things without thinking.
    • In Episode 19, she makes an offhanded comment about how she's sorry about the cattle that had to die, but it was worth it for the sake of a delicious dinner. Earlier, all of Gensokyo had to die for the sake of the Lunarians's Human Instrumentality Project and Yukari notices that Koishi is implying the same thing. She doesn't take it well.
  • Last of Their Kind: Satori and Koishi are the last satoris in existence. Except that's not the case, the Watatsuki sisters also became satoris through unknown means.
  • Nightmare Face: For a millisecond, she pulls off the mother of all Slasher Smiles when she sees her hat torn apart by Flandre. And this is where the video warns you that shit is gonna get real from now on.
  • Talkative Loon: Koishi will talk to anyone and anything, including her hat, any one of her replacement hats (such as a shoe), and a door.
  • Red Herring: Played with. Everything points toward Koishi being the cause of everyone turning mad in Gensokyo due to her ability to manipulate the subconscious mind, prompting Yukari to hunt her down and kill her. Turns out that not only was she not the cause, but she was deliberately set up as this trope by the Lunarians to make Yukari fall into an ambush.
  • Say It with Hearts: Just read the quote above!
  • Sibling Incest: Downplayed, but sometimes when Koishi thinks about Satori, she can't help but mention how pretty she is, and at one point says that she wants to marry her. Subverted completely by Toyohime who says that Satori merely adopts Koishi, thus they have no blood relation with each other.
  • Skewed Priorities: After Satori locks her up, Koishi reflects on her actions, but concludes to herself that the reason everyone was mad at her was because she was late home, and not due to mauling Meiling and Flandre to near-death.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Becomes this in later episodes, where she mostly just watches on the sidelines as other characters advance the plot, either by attempting to complete the Moonlight Descent Ceremony or by trying to stop it.
  • Unwitting Pawn: In the end, she was an unwitting decoy used by the Watatsuki sisters to attract Yukari and have her assassinated in an ambush.
    Satori Komeiji

Satori Komeiji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_20220215_071129.jpg
Debuted in: Subterranean Animism

The elder of the Komeiji sisters. She is the one who took care of Koishi while being on Earth. She has a third eye that can read people's heart, which makes her and the rest of her species despised by others. She is reclusive and rarely participates in any activity that take place on the surface Gensokyo.

  • Beware the Mind Reader: All satori with opened third eyes are capable of this, but Satori Komeiji is particularly an expert in digging her target's deepest psyche.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She cares for Koishi like a sister, blood relation be damned. Her reason for agreeing in helping the Lunarians is partially because she wants people to stop ostracizing her and her sister.
  • Brutal Honesty: She reads Koakuma's heart and exposes her as a demon harlot who has malicious intentions and is definitely up to no good. Thanks to Satori's infamous reputation, no one in Scarlet Devil Mansion is willing to accept her words, and she gets chased away violently.
  • Combat Tentacles: All satori creatures have this.
  • Curbstomp Battle: She gets this from Remilia. In Satori's defense, it is a 1 vs 3 battle.note
  • Mercy Kill: Beheads Rin Kaenbyou because she wants to spare her beloved pet from the Lunarians's cruelty.
  • The Mole: She turns out to be in on the Lunarian conspiracy to enact the Moonlight Descent Ceremony and is simply watching over Koishi until she completes her role.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Seemingly regrets assisting Watatsuki sisters in preparing the Moonlight Descent Ceremony. She is even ready to sabotage the plan, unfortunately she's stopped by Toyohime who destroyed her host body and brought her back to the Moon by force.
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: Defied. She is completely afraid of Toyohime, even the latter's mere echoing voice is enough to make her shudder in fear. Though Satori grows some spine and is willing to stand up to Toyohime, she still cannot get rid of the sense of dread whenever Toyohime is present.
  • Power Copying: By digging her opponent's deepest memories and fears, she can copy various spells her opponent have seen before. She can even easily copy Marisa's Master Spark without the use of mini-hakero.
  • Tough Love: How she educates Koishi; Satori does not hesitate to use physical punishment to discipline Koshi, as long as it is warranted and not causing any lasting injury.

Hakurei Shrine

    Reimu Hakurei

Reimu Hakurei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_20220122_164508.jpg
Debuted in: Highly Responsive to Prayer

"It's exorcism time."

Shrine maiden and protector of Gensokyo, and a main character of Touhou Project. She realized that someone is trying to drive all Gensokyo inhabitants into madness, so she, together with Marisa and Suika, search for the culprit.

  • And Then John Was a Zombie: Ends up being turned into a Kaiju alongside the rest of Gensokyo's inhabitants.
  • Barrier Maiden: She still has this ability, even after being turned into a Kaiju.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She used to be a rogue youkai exterminator before being recruited by Yukari to be a shrine maiden.
  • Dying as Yourself: Despite being turned into a kaiju, Reimu was able to hold onto her sense of self. Before delivering a suicidal attack with Kaiju Marisa, Kaiju Reimu tearfully admits that she loved living in Gensokyo and resolving incidents with Marisa.
  • Killed Off for Real: She and Kaiju Marisa deliver a suicidal attack on Yorihime, killing the Lunarian but losing their lives in the process.
  • Last Stand: She tries to deliver one against Yorihime, but fails and the Hakurei Barrier is subsequently destroyed. She has the opportunity to do it again, as a Kaiju, and she succeeds this time.
  • Together in Death: She and Marisa perform a Suicide Attack together to kill Yorihime.
  • Trauma Conga Line: When fighting against Yorihime near Hakurei Shrine entrance gate, Reimu suffers third-degree burn, gets stabbed in the stomach, is forced to witness Remilia and Kanako's death, and proceeds to get mocked by Yorihime about her inability to defend her own shrine, let alone Gensokyo.
    Marisa Kirisame

Marisa Kirisame

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_20220202_062522.jpg
Debuted in: Story of Eastern Wonderland

A magician who used to be one of Reimu's enemies, then befriends her and becomes protector of Gensokyo. She's another one of the main characters of Touhou Project.

  • And Then John Was a Zombie: Ends up being turned into a Kaiju alongside the rest of Gensokyo's inhabitants.
  • Go Out with a Smile: She's last seen in the series grinning as she's dying from her injury. Safe to say that Marisa has no regret.
  • Just in Time: Just as Kaiju!Reimu is about to get blindsided by Yorihime, Kaiju!Marisa sweeps in for the assist.
  • Killed Off for Real: She and Kaiju!Reimu deliver a suicidal attack on Yorihime, killing the Lunarian but losing their lives in the process.
  • Sociopathic Hero: A borderline one. She states that her time studying magic had killed off her capacity for emotion, demonstrated clearly with how she is does not react at seeing her father's corpse, and the only reason she isn't a complete sociopath is because of the bonds she built with people like Reimu and Alice. Also, she sees herself as being an evil-fighting book heroine (in fact, the only reason she even built a grave for her father was because she read a book in which its heroine does the same) and follows through with the tropes inherent with that kind of story, such as being protected by Plot Armor.
  • Together in Death: Dies together with Reimu after performing a Suicide Attack with her to kill Yorihime.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Before Gensokyo is destroyed, she's last seen with Alice about to confront Byakuren. It’s unknown what happens to her after the Hakurei Barrier is destroyed. However, the finale reveals she turned into a Kaiju monster.
    Yukari Yakumo

Yukari Yakumo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yukarikktha.png
Debuted in: Perfect Cherry Blossom

The mysterious "youkai of boundaries" and one of the most powerful beings in Gensokyo. After realizing that someone is trying to drive all Gensokyo inhabitants into madness, she believes it's Koishi's doing, after the ruckus she caused at the Scarlet Devil Mansion and her ability to manipulate the subconscious mind, prompting Yukari to hunt her down.

  • Adaptational Wimp: Despite being one of the most powerful characters, she wasn't able to realize the ensuing chaos in the Outside World and the Lunarians' Batman Gambit. She's killed by Reisen II and assimilated by Koishi, though she gains control of her body after seeing Reimu on the verge of death and tries to kill Yorihime, the one who hurt Reimu, with a stick. She fails and is forced to watch as Gensokyo is destroyed thanks to her own obliviousness.
  • Big Good: She's the main person trying to stop the cause of the madness. As of part 18 of the finale, she's one of the few Gensokyo residents left alive and the only one in a position to do anything.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Because she was too busy tracking the one who drove the Gensokyo's inhabitants into madness, she was unable to see the Lunarians' plot in the Outside World.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: She gives one to Koishi after the latter is uncaring about everyone else in Gensokyo being dead. It works and Koishi finally opens her third eye.
  • Portal Cut: Yukari uses her gaps to cut off all of Koishi's limbs simultaneously. And then gives her the guillotine treatment.
  • Sharing a Body: Koishi assimilates Yukari after the latter is killed by Reisen II, with Koishi being the dominant personality. Though Yukari regains consciousness for a while upon seeing an almost-dead Reimu.
  • Survivor Guilt: After regaining her body and will in Episode 19 (Part 8), she blames herself for surviving alongside Koishi when everyone else in Gensokyo (except Patchouli) had died.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Reisen II kills Yukari by detonating a bomb implanted inside Ran's stomach, then emptying her rifle ammo on her, then by detonating another bomb implanted inside Chen's stomach.

Scarlet Devil Mansion

    Remilia Scarlet

Remilia Scarlet

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/remikktha.png
Debuted in: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

The Vampire mistress of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. She doesn't notice the arising troubles of Gensokyo and the moon-inducing madness because she's worrying about Flandre, who was attacked by Koishi at the beginning of the story.

  • Jerkass: She treats Flandre coldly because she doesn't know how to deal with her. She also humiliated Satori when the latter came to the mansion in order to apologize for Koishi's rampage.
  • Killed Off for Real: Yorihime kills her by summonning a sun goddess, effectively vaporizing her.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: She was so busy worrying over her family troubles, that she hadn't noticed the moon-induced madness and the Watatsukis' Batman Gambit until it was too late.
"Look, there's no way I could have known! I was busy with my family circumstances!"
  • Poor Communication Kills: Towards Flandre. Remilia was not there to save Meiling or Flan from Koishi's rampage, because she was at Reimu's discussing Flan's improvement and showing the parasol she had planned to give Flan when she returned to the mansion. As a result, Flan believes Remi only sees her as a burden, which is why she easily fell into Koakuma's manipulations.
    Flandre Scarlet

Flandre Scarlet

"Everyone is so weird! Even though I always do bad things, no one ever gets mad at me!"
Debuted in: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

Remilia’s little sister. Her destructive power and violent mood swings meant that she had to be locked in the mansion's basement. As a result, she believes Remilia doesn’t really care about her, because she never scolds her and faces her directly.

  • And Then John Was a Zombie: Gets transformed into a monstrous Kaiju form as a result of the Human Instrumentality Project.
  • Dying as Yourself: Before Yorihime kills her, Kaiju!Flandre starts calling tearfully for Remilia in her last moments.
  • Killed Off for Real: After the Hakurei Barrier is destroyed, she becomes a Kaiju monster and is killed by Yorihime.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Due to Koakuma’s manipulations, she destroys the Hakurei Barrier, believing that if she does, she won’t be locked in the basement anymore and she’ll have more freedom to do what she wants.
  • Please Wake Up: After seeing Meiling with her neck torn after Koishi’s rampage, she tries to get her to wake up.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After seeing Meiling violently mauled by Koishi during their encounter, Flandre proceeds to go after her in revenge. Because of Koishi’s power over the unconscious mind, Flandre’s attacks miss and she’s impaled by Koishi’s claws and promptly defenestrated from the mansion....while it was raining.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Torn apart by Koishi, feeling even more abandoned than before by Remilia, and then given a Breaking Speech by Koakuma to further break her spirit...while a rainstorm was called indoors to weaken her further. Then, her sister is killed and she becomes an insanity-driven Kaiju due to the effects of the Moon, destroying the Hakurei Barrier. After being defeated by Yorihime, she recovers her senses and starts tearfully calling for Remilia, only for Yorihime to then kill her off.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To Koakuma and the Watatsukis, who needed Flandre to lose her trust in Remilia all just so she could destroy the Hakurei Barrier.
    • Koishi Yakumo tries to lampshade this trope to stop Flandre from destroying the barrier, saying that she’ll be killed in the Outside World and she’s being manipulated by the Watatsukis. Flandre is too broken to listen and only complains that Remilia never scolded her...and breaks the barrier anyway.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Before Yorihime ends up killing Kaiju!Flandre, the former ends up saying this:
Yorihime: "Thank you for destroying the Great Hakurei Border. Adieu."
    Patchouli Knowledge

Patchouli Knowledge

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/patchykktha.png

"I don't like you. First you beg forgiveness from Remi and now you ask me to release my familiar?"
Debuted in: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

Remilia's magician friend, who lives in the library of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Koakuma has an unrequited love for her, and the reason that Koakuma had done a Face–Heel Turn and allied with the Lunarians was so she could have Patchouli for herself.

  • Broken Bird: After being abducted by Koakuma and forced to watch the destruction of Gensokyo.
  • Damsel in Distress: She's captured by Koakuma before the Hakurei Barrier and Gensokyo are destroyed, having been promised by the Watatsukis that they would spare her.
  • Empty Shell: Becomes this after being forced to live with the fact that Koakuma destroyed Gensokyo and spared her so Koakuma could have her for herself. To make matters worse, Koakuma rapes Patchouli after the fact, while the latter is crying with Dull Eyes of Unhappiness.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Satori warns her that Koakuma is not the Shrinking Violet she believes her to be and is actually an Ax-Crazy Yandere. Patchouli doesn't believe her and blasts Satori from the mansion. After all, how could she believe in the words of a mind reader?
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After realizing that her blind trust on Koakuma doomed Gensokyo. The poor girl is forced to watch as her friends are warped into Kaijus and slaughtered en-masse by the Lunarians.
  • Traumatic Haircut: Koakuma cuts her hair, because she thinks it suits her more. By that point, Patchouli is too broken to care.
  • You Will Be Spared: One of the few Gensokyo inhabitants who wasn't killed or transformed into a Kaiju, and that's only because Koakuma pleaded for her life.
    Hong Meiling

Meiling Hong

Debuted in: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

The gatekeeper of the Scarlet Devil Mansion.

  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Meiling prevents Koishi from entering the Scarlet Devil Mansion. For the trouble, she gets the entire front of her neck torn out so that the spine is visible.
  • Driven to Madness: Due to the moon effects, she becomes crazy and still injured from her fight with Koishi, she engages on a fight against Sakuya.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: She punches Koishi when the latter starts yelling for a fishing rod at the mansion's inhabitants. In return, she gets her head punched off.
  • It's All My Fault: After surviving Koishi’s rampage, she blames herself for not protecting Flandre, who only got involved because she wanted to avenge Meiling.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: It’s unknown what happens to her after Gensokyo is destroyed, but the fact that she was last seen going crazy implies she turned into a Kaiju Monster and was killed off-screen.
    Sakuya Izayoi

Sakuya Izayoi

Debuted in: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

Remilia's maid, with the ability to stop time.

  • Driven to Madness: Averted. She's one of the few strong enough to resist the moon-induced madness.
  • Only Sane Man: Of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, with Meiling and Flandre being driven to madness, Remilia being more concerned about her family, Koakuma being Evil All Along and Patchouli not realizing it.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: It’s unknown what happened to her after Gensokyo was destroyed.
    Koakuma

Koakuma

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/koakktha.png
Debuted in: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

Patchouli’s assistant who works as a librarian and a character from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. She’s meek, shy and prone to tears. Or at least, that’s what she wants everyone to believe.

  • Adaptational Badass: Much stronger than she is in the canon games, thanks to the Lunarians giving her the power to absorb the powers of Gensokyo's dead.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: By episode 19, she has Patchouli all to herself.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Koakuma poses as Patchouli's shy and meek assistant. In reality, she's a homicidal psychopath who doesn't give a shit about anyone but herself and Patchouli, manipulating everyone (including Patchouli) in order to bring her plan into fruition.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She's obsessed with Patchouli, to the point of seeing the whole population of Gensokyo as potential rivals.
  • Cute and Psycho: When not pretending to be a Shrinking Violet, she Hates Everyone Equally but Patchouli.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: Koakuma is completely beneath anyone's suspicion in the Scarlet Devil Mansion (sans Flandre), and Satori accusing her of dark planning gets her blasted out of the mansion by Remi and Patchy.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: She only works with the Lunarians so she can have Patchouli to herself.
  • The Heavy: She's the one tasked with carrying out the early stages of the Lunarians' plan in Gensokyo, including manipulating Flandre and having her destroy the Great Hakurei Barrier.
  • Hidden Villain: The one secretly moving along the madness gripping Gensokyo.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: She abducts Patchouli before the Hakurei Barrier and Gensokyo are destroyed, having been promised by the Watatsukis that they would spare her.
  • Kick the Morality Pet: Patchouli is the only person Koakuma displays any affection for, but it turns out to be more a perverse lust than love, as seen when Koakuma rapes her.
  • Lack of Empathy: When Patchouli calls her out on her actions, Koakuma says that she wanted everyone in Gensokyo dead and only spared Patchouli because she loved her. She also expresses no concern for all the lives she ruined, seeing them as annoyances who meddled into her relationship with Patchouli.
"Lady Patchouli, I only care about you. I don't care about anyone else. Whatever happens to them, I can say from the bottom of my heart that I truly don't care. These people that I don't even like, all they do is take away your time. I've hated it my entire life. I'm not wrong, am I?"
  • Love Makes You Crazy: Her ranting to Patchouli amounts to this in Episode 19. She claims that everything she did, including manipulating Flandre into destroying the Hakurei Barrier, was all for the sake of destroying everyone in Gensokyo so there'd be nobody left to take Patchouli from her.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: On a particularly large scale. She helped orchestrating the massacre of the Gensokyo inhabitants to have Patchouli all for herself.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: She loves Patchouli so much, that she’s willing to destroy all population of Gensokyo just so they won’t have her.
  • Power Copying: Koakuma apparently has the ability to steal powers from the dead, implied by her use of a 'miracle' after Sanae's death. This ends up being confirmed after using Sunny, Luna, Mystia, Youmu, Cirno and Iku's own powers to fight Reimu.
    • She also uses Suika’s power over density to give Patchouli a haircut.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: She eventually forces herself on Patchouli after kidnapping her.
  • Succubi and Incubi: Aside from her being a succubus and disturbing possessiveness over Patchouli, after she abducts Patchouli during the destruction of Gensokyo, she proceeds to rape her.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To the Watatsukis, since the Lunarians are exploiting her Mad Love towards Patchouli as a means to complete the Human Instrumentality Project. They even consider her expendable.
  • Walking Spoiler: Given how heavily she's connected to the events that transpire.
  • Yandere: For Patchouli. She allied with the Lunarians in order to destroy Gensokyo and everyone in it so that she could have Patchouli for herself.

Myouren Temple

    Byakuren Hijiri

Debuted in: Undefined Fantastic Object

A Buddhist nun turned youkai magician who helps youkai. Due to the Human Instrumentality Project of the Watatsukis, which drives most of Gensokyo’s inhabitants into madness, she becomes the leader of a revolution with the intent to destroy all humans so the youkai could rule.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: The last we see of her, she's withered, alone and seemingly dying. It hits especially hard since she was originally a kind-hearted person before being driven mad.
  • And Then John Was a Zombie: Gets turned into a kaiju along with every other surviving Gensokyo inhabitant.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: She's one of the bigger threats menacing Gensokyo, but she's still a pawn driven mad by the real villains. She's last seen as a Kaiju monster, implying her invasion was stopped by the Watatsukis (not to mention Byakuren was not being herself all along).
  • Dark Messiah: She plans to revolt against humans and summons a large youkai army to accomplish it. She also kills Shou and Nazrin when they oppose to her plans.
  • Driven to Madness: Due to the moon's effects, she becomes crazy and starts plotting against the humans and betraying Reimu.
  • New Era Speech: Delivers one to her youkai followers, expressing her intentions to rid Gensokyo of humans so youkai can rule.
  • Villain of Another Story: Her uprising gives Marisa, Alice and Mamizou something to contend with, but doesn't intersect with Koishi or Reimu and Yukari's attempts to uncover the source of the madness.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Before Gensokyo is destroyed, she's last seen invading the village with her UFOs and her youkai army. It isn't until part 6 of the Finale that we discover she was turned into a kaiju and killed.

  • Alien Invasion: She provides Byakuren the prerequisite UFOs for her revolution against humans.

  • No Social Skills: She calls herself a misanthrope and admits she doesn't fit with the Myouren Temple crew.
    Shou Toramaru

  • Driven to Madness: Averted. She's strong enough to resist the moon induced madness, and that's what gets her killed.
  • Off with His Head!: Her fate for betraying Byakuren. Her headless body is later tied to a pole.
  • Only Sane Man: The only member of the Myouren Temple besides Nazrin who opposes to Byakuren's plans to destroy humanity. She even tells Hijiri that her plans to exterminate humanity will amount to nothing.

  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was viciously bullied by her classmates for being able to communicate with Kanako and Suwako. The bullies almost raped her, but she was saved by Kanako. Unfortunately, Sanae's bullies react to their humiliation by Kanako's hands by burning her house down, with her parents inside. Sanae killed them in retribution before going to Gensokyo.
  • Driven to Madness: Due to the Moon's effects, she becomes crazy and starts killing random youkai indiscriminately.

  • Killed Off for Real: By Kogasa, in an act of self-defense.

  • And Then John Was a Zombie: Gets transformed into a kaiju along with the rest of Gensokyo's residents.
  • Animal Motif: In canon, she’s associated with The Phoenix, due to her immortality and fire powers. When she becomes a Kaiju monster, she looks like a phoenix.
  • Driven to Madness: She's driven mad by the moon and betrays Keine by burning the Human Village.
  • Immortality: In canon, she'll keep resurrecting indefinitely, though that doesn't mean that getting killed doesn't hurt and can regenerate if even a single hair of her is all that's left. She still has this after becoming a Kaiju monster, and Seiran exploits Mokou’s weakness and kills her while she’s still regenerating after the Vijoka’s last attack on her.
  • Killed Off for Real: By a Vijoka piloted by Seiran using an "Anti-Hourai Cannon" to nullify her immortality.
  • Pyromaniac: After being driven to madness by the moon, she becomes a crazy pyromaniac, burning everything and everyone on sight. She continues to do this after becoming a Kaiju monster and destroying Brazil.
  • Would Hurt a Child: She burned all the Human Village, with children still living there. Also, as a Kaiju monster, she reduces Brazil to ashes just to eliminate a young boy that was escaping from her.

  • Driven to Madness: Is driven to lunacy and and eats Youmu alive.
  • I Wished You Were Dead: Like her canon counterpart, she can invoke death as she wishes.

    Watatsuki no Toyohime

Watatsuki no Toyohime

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_20220214_174305.jpg
Debuted in: Silent Sinner in Blue

"Truth be told, I'd rather not set foot on such filthy ground."

The carefree elder Watatsuki sister and a Lunarian princess. She and her sister Watatsuki no Yorihime are satori in disguise who have been manipulating Satori Komeiji to do their bidding and are working on the Human Instrumentality Project together in order to expand the satori population.

  • Adaptational Villainy: It's safe to say the canon Toyohime would never have concocted such an elaborate and destructive evil plan.
  • Big Bad: She's the cause of the madness gripping Gensokyo and is manipulating Lunarians, humans and youkai alike, just so the Moonlight Descent Plan can take place, which will turn all sapient life into satori creatures.
  • The Chessmaster: The Moonlight Descent Plan and the Human Instrumentality Project took a lot of planning on her and her sister's part to carry out. To enact them, she and Yorihime had to plant Satori and Koishi both in Gensokyo beforehand, perform a Benevolent Alien Invasion of the Earth in order to abolish all war so the concept would end up in Gensokyo and ensure that the Great Hakurei Barrier was destroyed at around the same time, while tricking the humans of the outside world into thinking the kaiju-fied Gensokyo residents are really invading aliens and destroying each and every one of them to focus humanity's faith on the Lunarians.
  • Co-Dragons: She and Yorihime are Lord Tsukuyomi's top subordinates, although it's Toyohime who takes the lead in enacting the Moonlight Descent Plan.
  • The Corrupter: She's the one responsible for driving Koishi to despair by forcing her to hear the collective thoughts of a bunch of uncaring people in the streets, which forced her to close her Third Eye and to become the Cloud Cuckoolander she is now.
  • Cruel Mercy: Spares Satori only so she can make her watch all the chaos that ensues.
  • Evilutionary Biologist: Her whole plan is turn all the inhabitants of Earth into satori.
  • Fantastic Racism: She thinks that Earth and its population are "disgusting", and she states in Episode 14 that, to her, humans are "curious little creatures".
  • Lack of Empathy: When she's told her sister was killed, she doesn't care at all and seems almost amused.
  • Leave No Witnesses: Once she's done with her experiments on the fairies, she orders Koakuma and Reisen II to kill the survivors.
  • Mouth of Sauron: She and her sister are this for Lord Tsukuyomi, acting as the public faces of the Lunarians while he stays behind the curtain (literally).
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: She claims herself to be a Well-Intentioned Extremist. She acted as an ambassador for the Moon and enforced world peace, abolishing all forms of suffering, including war and violence, on Earth. This had the side effect of bringing those concepts to Gensokyo, as anything that ceases to exist in the Outside World goes there. All of this was for the sake of purifying the Earth so he and his lover, the Moon, could be reunited. In fact, she's a psychopath who looks down on humans and doesn't care much for anything.
  • Power Floats: She hates setting foot on Earth's "filthy ground", thus she's usually seen floating. Sometimes she floats upside down to look more menacing.
  • Razor Wind: She has this power in the most extreme level; One slight swing from her paper fan is enough to shred her victim into pieces. It is said that a full powered swing can reduce its victim to atomic level. It says something when even Yorihime is wary of this power.
  • Smug Snake: She is almost always seen grinning in condescending manner.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: To the people from the Outside World, she's a friendly alien who helped them achieve world peace and prosperity.
    Watatsuki no Yorihime

Watatsuki no Yorihime

Debuted in: Silent Sinner in Blue

"Lowly youkai. Your mere existence is a sin."

The younger of the Watatsuki sisters and a Lunarian princess, who is actually a satori in disguise. Alongside her sister, she works on the Human Instrumentality Project which involves driving the Gensokyo population to madness.

  • Adaptational Villainy: Like her sister she's much worse than her canon depiction.
  • Blood Knight: She's a bit too eager to fight Kaiju monsters.
  • Break the Haughty: She doesn't lose her grin when Kaiju Reimu breaks her sword, nor does she when Kaiju Marisa appears. She does and starts panicking when she gets caught off guard with her substitute weapon being too heavy and too slow to react to her opponent's Suicide Attack.
  • Co-Dragons: She and Toyohime are Lord Tsukuyomi's top subordinates.
  • Cold Ham: She rarely speaks outside battle, yet when she does, it is almost guaranteed to be grandiose. Notably so when she taunts Reimu.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Extremely downplayed, but she questions whether all the destruction brought on by the Lunarians was really necessary for the Moonlight Defense Ceremony.
  • Eye Scream: She loses an eye during her fight with Reimu, Kanako and Remilia.
  • Eyepatch of Power: After losing her left eye, she begins wearing an eyepatch over it.
  • Fantastic Racism: She despises Earth youkai, even more so than in canon.
  • Hidden Depths: Unlike Toyohime, who's eager to manipulate everyone to repopulate the world with satoris, Yorihime actually wonders if it's necessary to lie to the Outside World humans and kill all Gensokyo population to accomplish it.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: When she tries to use her god summoning powers to kill Kaiju!Reimu, she can't do it due to all gods being erased from existence due to loss of faith. Said loss of faith was indirectly because of their plans.
  • Kick the Morality Pet: Executes Reisen, her and Toyohime's former pet, when she tries to reason with her.
  • Killed Off for Real: She's killed in a suicide attack by the Kaiju versions of Reimu and Marisa.
  • Master Swordsman: She wields a sword and is extremely skillful at fighting with it.
  • Oh, Crap!: Caught completely off guard by Reimu and Marisa teleporting right beside her to perform their Suicide Attack.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Almost always seen frowning with tense facial expression. When she does smile, it is when she's about to inflict pain to others and gloat about it.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She has red eyes and is one of the more malicious characters in this fanfiction.
  • Summon Magic: Like in canon, her fighting style relies on summoning gods into her body, letting her switch between powersets to fit the situation. She summons The Power of the Sun and a Green Thumb to kill Remilia and Kanako respectively.
  • Talker and Doer: Her sister is the "talker" who handles relations with the humans and the planning of the Moonlight Descent Ceremony, while Yorihime is the "doer" who carries things out.
    Reisen II

Reisen II

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_20220201_192404.jpg
Debuted in: Silent Sinner in Blue

A Moon Rabbit who was "freed" by Toyohime from her seemingly eternal duty of pounding mochi (possibly as a punishment for Chang'e). Now works as a Lunar Defense Corps sniper and assassin.

  • Adaptational Badass: Unlike canon, in this fan-video series she is an efficient assassin. She only fails to completely exterminate Yukari because she doesn't know that Koishi can do the thing she does.
  • Cold Sniper: Her signature weapon is a time-warp Sniper Rifle, given to her by Toyohime.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: She kills Yukari with an elaborate (and very cruel) plan to lure her into a trap before blowing her up using her own shikigami servants as unwilling suicide bombers.
  • The Dragon: She is the triggerwoman for the Watatsuki siblings.
  • Leave No Witnesses: The one Toyohime task with killing the surviving fairies so their experiments will stay covered up.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She has red eyes and is one of the more malicious characters in this fanfiction.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: With Yorihime's death and Toyohime becoming a full-time diplomat, it is unknown what happened to her and the rest of Moon Rabbit soldiers.

    Sagume Kishin

Sagume Kishin

Debuted in: Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom

A Lunarian divine spirit who does not speak much due to her special condition: Reversing situation(s) with her words.

  • Satellite Character: In her few appearances, her role has just been to give Lord Tsukuyomi someone to talk with.
    Lord Tsukuyomi

Lord Tsukuyomi

  • Ascended Extra: Extremely downplayed. He's only mentioned in a single canon Touhou spin-off, but here he's given a bigger role as the Watatsuki sisters' boss and the real mastermind behind the Moonlight Descent Ceremony.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He set everything in motion with his plan to awaken the Moon and Earth so they could reunite.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: His motive for enacting the Moonlight Descent Ceremony has yet to be expanded upon.
  • Sinister Silhouettes: Only seen as a silhouette behind a curtain thus far.

Spoiler Characters

    Koishi Yakumo

Koishi Yakumo

After Yukari is killed by Reisen II, her body is assimilated by Koishi, forming a single being, Koishi Yakumo. Koishi is the dominant personality and thanks to the two sharing a body, Koishi has her heart restored. The two eventually separate by Episode 19.

  • I Hate Past Me: After regaining her heart, Koishi says this about her old subconscious self. To the point she's ashamed of going back to the Scarlet Devil Mansion after the ruckus she caused in the first episode.
  • Sharing a Body: Koishi and Yukari, with Koishi being the dominant personality.
    The Moon

The Moon

Moon's humanoid form

"Everyone's eyes are closed. Am I the only one with them open?"

Before the universe was created, the Moon was a humanoid girl. She was once completely alone due to being the only sentient creature with open eyes, but then she had met the Earth, another humanoid, and the two fell in love. The two consummated their relationship, resulting in the birth of all sapient life. Unfortunately, their offspring (the satoris) ended up tainting the Earth, leading them to be separated. The plot of the series is the Lunarians trying to purify the Earth so she could be with him again.

  • Ancient Astronauts: It's unknown where the Moon came from, just that she fell from the sky long ago.
  • Genki Girl What she was when she met Earth. After the Earth was corrupted, however...
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Of the whole series. The Lunarians have varying motives among them, but all have the goal of waking her up and reuniting her with her lover.
  • Karma Houdini: In Episode 19, the Moon ends up reuniting with the Earth, just like she always wanted.
  • Love Makes You Evil: All she wants is to be reunited with her lover again, disregarding all the deaths and manipulations it costs. Although its unclear just how much of the destruction from the Moonlight Descent Ceremony was her instruction and how much was due to the way the Lunarians went about it.
"Just wait right there....My diameter is only one fourth the size of yours, but I guess I have no choice. Just you watch, I'll rescue you for sure."
  • Mother of a Thousand Young: She gave birth to all life in the universe, such as humans, Lunarians, and the satori race, the latter which turned out to be Antagonistic Offspring.
  • The Immodest Orgasm: After consummating with the Earth.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With the Earth, whom she was separated from after he became "tainted" by their offspring.
  • The Woman Behind the Man: Everything that happened around the series is part of the Moon's plan to get reunited with the Earth, with the Lunarians and Koakuma doing most of the heavy work around it.
    The Earth

The Earth

Earth's humanoid form

"We most certainly....we definitely....were destined to meet."

The Moon's lover, who also took on a humanoid form. He became tainted with impurity by his offspring, the satoris. He was forced to close his eye and enter a deep slumber as a result, which causes him and the Moon to become separated. The Lunarians' motivation for causing the plot of the series was cleansing him of his impurities so that he and the Moon could reunite.
