Cool Long
Old Long
Role: Presidentnote
Party: America First Partynote
Ideology: Longismnote , Social Democracy (Perfect Democracy or PSA), Paternal Autocracy (Imperial Presidency)
In-Game Biography: Click to Show

  • Adaptational Heroism: Compared to his vanilla KR counterpart, Long can fully commit himself to civil rights and resist his more authoritarian urges to become a legitimate social-democrat populist.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Alternatively, Long can choose to reconcile with moderate Dixiecrats after the CAR is defeated and establish himself as a right-wing dictator (something that isn't present in vanilla KR).
  • Our Founder: If Long leads the AUS to win the Civil War, after his death, there'll be a proposal for the creation of a statue depicting him as he was in life. Gerald L. K. Smith and Earl Long want a large, standing statue; Charles Coughlin advocates for a humble human-sized statue so that he can be with the people as he was in life; and Alfred Mitchell Bingham argues that any monument should be more like the Lincoln Memorial, with emphasis on Long's visionariness rather than his power.
  • This Is My Name on Foreign: In Paraguay, Long becomes known as Señor Largo (largo means long in Spanish).

In-Game Biography: Click to Show

He's also known for treating his workers well and also advocated for a humanistic capitalism for the people and used this to be elected as Oklahoma's governor and after the Civil War can put his ideals into practice.

  • Insane Troll Logic: The Ballards claim that not only are they reincarnated spirits of famous people throughout human history, but also believe that Abraham Lincoln's assassination was because European Jews funded the Knights of the Golden Circle to take revenge in Benjamin Franklin's anti-Semitic speech about Jewish migration to America.
  • Interfaith Smoothie: The Ballards practice a bizarre mixture of Theosophist thought and their strange occultist movement that the Ballards are reincarnations of previous famous historical figures like Richard The Lion Heart, George Washington, Joan of Arc, and Benjamin Franklin.

  • Hero-Worshipper: Smith idolizes Huey Long, and will do his best to bring the vision of his idol to fruition if he succeeds him, though some wonder if Smith's interpretation is in line with Long's ideals.
  • Rousing Speech: Smith is one of the most charismatic men on Earth, and frequently makes speeches to the people, reminiscent of Huey Long's old barnstorming speeches. The speeches are meant to gather more support for Smith's policies, increase his own popularity, and inspire the people.

  • Internal Reformist: Although he is aligned with the AFP, Bingham harbors no illusions that his movement will be a radical change to the party and the country. In order to bring forth a revolution in America, Bingham enacts constant small changes to the economy, slowly chipping away at capitalism and replacing it with a more equitable and truly democratic system.
  • Welcome Back, Traitor: Even though leftist radicals from other Civil War factions are officially seen as traitors by the AUS, Bingham has the choice to rehabilitate them to build a larger socialist following, and recruit Upton Sinclair and John Dewey into his administration.

Pendergast's Machine

    Tom Pendergast
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_tex_tom_pendergast.png
Role: Presidentnote  (Pendergast coups Long)
Party: Pendergast Machinenote
Ideology: Clientelismnote , Kleptocracynote  (Pendergast consolidates control)

  • Corrupt Politician: Pendergast represents some of the absolute worst of the American political machine, known for being a strongman 'boss', his extreme gambling addiction, and for having his cabinet consist of bribed sycophants.
  • Realpolitik: In order for black communities to favor and vote for Pendergast and his machine, he'll need to tread carefully with the whites and hold the blacks at an arm's length to not anger them, but still manage to get on both of their good sides.
  • Red Baron: Due to his dictatorial hold over Kansas City, he's nicknamed the 'King of Kansas City'.
  • Small-Town Tyrant: Inverted. Pendergast rules Kansas City a somewhat large city, as an effective dictatorship. Making his loyalty with the AUS questionable as an ally or enemy.
  • The Corrupter: When politicians associate themselves with Pendergast and his circle, it wouldn't take long for a scandal to rise about them and their actions before Pendergast dismisses or squashes these rumors.
  • The Coup: Pendergast comes into power by ousting Long after he refuses to cooperate with him, and if he refuses to investigate him.

    Harry S. Truman

Role: Presidentnote  (Truman propped up as leader by Pendergast)
Party: Missouri Democratic Partynote
Ideology: Authoritarian Liberalismnote

  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Despite being a puppet to Pendergast and still open to his corrupt practices, at the very least he's not an absolute dictator and does give some civil liberties to the people.
  • Corrupt Bureaucrat: People assume that Truman is the opposition force against Pendergast, the truth is that he's actually just a puppet of Pendergast and only succeeds him to prevent any more people protesting against Pendergast and his dictatorship.

Gunpowder Plot

Regents

    Philip Carroll
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kx_carroll.png
Regent Philip Carroll portrait
Role: General, Archregentnote  (New Gunpowder Plot), Regentnote  (Monarch crowned)
Party: The Holy American Leaguenote
Ideology: Integralismnote
In-Game Biography (Archregent Carroll): Click to Show
In-Game Biography (Regent Carroll): Click to Show

  • Church Militant: After the Holy American League takes control of America, the Knight Watch militia, originally formed to combat racism, rapidly grows in popularity across the continental United States and begins adopting the pledges, titles, iconography and customs of full-fledged Knightly Orders in the fashion of the old European crusaders.
  • Eagle Squadron: Carroll leads a militia formed from the ranks of French and Italian volunteers to aid the AUS in getting rid of corruption and syndicalism in America.
  • History Repeats: Carroll's New Gunpowder Plot is a mirror of Guy Fawkes's original Gunpowder Plot. After a head of state (James VI and I and Huey Long) introduces an anti-Catholic bill, radical Catholics plot to blow up the meeting place of the legislature (the Palace of Westminster and the Capitol Building) with him inside it and turn the country into a Catholic monarchy, though the New Gunpowder Plot has a better chance to succeed than the original one.
  • Knighting: Carroll creates a new aristocratic class that will help ensure the preservation of the holiness of America.
  • Monumental Damage: The Holy American League tears down or defaces numerous monuments of old America, including the Capitol Building, the Statue of Liberty (which is reforged into the visage of the Virgin Mary), and the numerous statues dedicated to the Confederacy.
  • The Necrocracy: If he does not restore the House of Stuart, Carroll can declare the nominal head of state of the Empire of Our Lady of Guadalupe to be none other than Jesus Christ himself.
  • The Political Officer: Carroll grants the Roman Catholic Chaplain Corps, a long standing branch of the American military, special status within the armed forces as Christian Commissars to further bolster morale.
  • Regent for Life: After taking power, Carroll abolishes the title of President and proclaims himself Regent (of Jesus Christ himself). He keeps this title (and real power) even if he later chooses to crown James III; if King James III dies, Carroll can quietly end the monarchy and maintain a regency, still recognizing the Stuarts as rightful monarchs, but claiming the time is not yet ripe to crown a successor to James, not while the world is still burning.
  • The Starscream: The Holy American League comes to power in a Gunpowder Plot, when they blow up the Capitol Building with Huey Long, Fox Connor and Gerald L. K. Smith inside it.
  • Succession Crisis: If Carroll does not restore the Jacobite monarchy, he'll die of influenza, resulting in a succession crisis, as distinct factions within the Holy American League begin to claim to be Carroll's successor.
  • Suddenly Significant City: As part of Carroll's initiative to turn America into a Catholic country, he turns Saint Mary's City, the original Catholic American colony along the Chesapeake Bay, from a tourist attraction into a modern city to serve as America's new capital.
  • The Theocracy: The Holy American League turns the American Union State into a Catholic Kingdom of God, with Philip Acosta Carroll as His Holy Regent.

    Leonard Feeney
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kx_leonard_feeney.png
Role: General, Archregentnote  (Hardliners win 2nd Holy League American Congress - Feeney elected)
Party: Holy American League-Hardliner Factionnote
Ideology: National Security Statenote , Maurrassismenote  (Charles Maurras followed), Padre Pio Thoughtnote  (Padre Pio followed)
In-Game Biography: Click to Show

  • Burn the Witch!: Arch-Regent Feeney's rule sees a revival of burnings at the stake to deal with various crimes ranging from sodomy to freemasonry in the countryside.
  • The Fundamentalist: Feeney doubles down on the Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus (Outside the Church there is no salvation) doctrine. Heavy taxes are levied on populations not publicly adhering to the one Holy Catholic Church, while outspoken Protestants, Jews and others disappear, for they are already doomed to Gehenna, and serve no purpose in the mortal realm.
  • Knight Templar: Feeney believes that a failure to adhere to the Church will lead to the failure of the nation as a whole; his hardliners see themselves as vessels of God and the Holy Mother who carry out their work in protecting the Empire from sin and heresy. After Carroll's death, they seek to stamp out secularism and reaffirm the Empire as the tool of the Church to bring salvation from fiery Gehenna to all souls.

    Charles Coughlin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kx_charles_coughlin.png
Pope Coughlin
Role: Presidentnote  (Long assassinated - Coughlin succeeds), Archregentnote  (Moderates win 2nd Holy League American Congress - Coughlin elected)
Party: America First Partynote , Holy American League-Populist Factionnote  (Holy League)
Ideology: Longismnote
In-Game Biography: Click to Show

  • Kangaroo Court: Coughlin holds a show trial and gives 12 years of prison to Frances Sweeney, an outspoken opponent of his Antisemitism who, after he succeeds Long, will start to criticize the America First Party as corrupt and President Coughlin as a man who has strayed from the Church and distorted the Lord's message.
  • Prepare to Die: If Huey Long accepts Philip Carroll's Catholic volunteers only to later pass an anti-Catholic bill, he's later seen in the Capitol Building listening to Coughlin's radio show, which concludes with: 'And my wrath shall wax hot; I shall kill you with the sword, and you will find that your wives shall be widows and your children, fatherless.' Immediately after, the Capitol Building is blown up, before Coughlin and Carroll seize control of the White House the next morning.
  • The Purge: One of Coughlin's first actions after succeeding Long is to declare the most radical left-wing Longists, like Alfred Mitchell Bingham, Bronson M. Cutting, Sid McMath, Joseph C.O. Mahoney and the likes, to be traitors. Coughlin leans towards jailing such people, but can be convinced to only remove them from any government positions or other areas of power.
  • Taking Up the Mantle: Though Coughlin sides with the Holy American League in the New Gunpowder Plot, he continues to sympathise with America First and believes that Longist populism was righteous in nature before its corruption. After Arch-Regent Carroll's death, Coughlin speaks on the need for a return to the populist policies of Huey Long in order for the Empire to survive. This goal is a very popular one, as many citizens of the Empire look back on phrases like 'Every Man a King' with fondness.

    Fulton J. Sheen
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kx_sheen.png
Role: General, Archregentnote  (Moderates win 2nd Holy League American Congress - Sheen elected)
Party: Holy American League-Loyalist Factionnote
Ideology: Christian Democracynote

  • Meet the New Boss: Sheen, the 'Beloved Disciple' of Arch-Regent Philip Carroll, is determined to carry out Carroll's vision as closely as possible, with some slight democratic reforms.
  • Patriotic Fervor: Sheen promotes the value of patriotism as part of piety; all Catholics have the solemn duty of being conscious of their duty to America, and of preserving its freedom by preserving its faith in God.

    Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kx_tex_regent_joe.png
Role: Archregentnote  (No Majority achieved - Kennedy coups the Congress)
Party: Holy American League-National Cavalier Factionnote
Ideology: Military Juntanote
In-Game Biography: Click to Show

  • Meet the New Boss: In practice, Kennedy's junta is little different from Carroll's regency before him. Same government authority, same beliefs in Catholicism, only with a few more soldiers in the streets and more commendation bars on the officers.
  • Military Coup: If Congress gets deadlocked in the aftermath of Arch-Regent Carroll's death, Kennedy can lead the army to seize the reins of power within the Empire, reduce the Holy American League to pen-pushers and rubber-stampers, and turn the Empire into a de facto military junta.
  • Regent for Life: After his coup, Kennedy is declared this by the Regency Council to ensure continued stability.
  • Young and in Charge: Kennedy, born in 1915, is the youngest potential successor to Philip Carroll.

    Al Smith
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kx_tex_al_smith.png
Role: General, Archregentnote  (Reformists win 2nd Holy League American Congress - Smith elected)
Party: Holy American League-Christian Capitalist Factionnote
Ideology: Market Liberalism
In-Game Biography: Click to Show

  • Good Old Ways: Smith promises to lead America to a warm and familiar future by reviving the true federalism and democracy of the old American system, which was left to rot after the Holy American League emerged victorious in the Second Civil War.
  • Internal Reformist: Smith's Right Reformists push for the return of democracy to the Empire of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with the comparatively more moderate end goal of bringing the federalist model back to America.

    Bernard Sheil
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_tex_bernard_sheil.png
Role: Archregentnote  (Reformists win 2nd Holy League American Congress - Sheil elected)
Party: Holy American League-Moderate Reformists Factionnote
Ideology: Radical Progressivismnote

  • Internal Reformist: Sheil to assist the people stops the American Inquisition, decentralizes the government, and gets rid of the oppressive dictatorial distributist economic system and replaces it with a moderate labor-oriented distributism.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Sheil's Moderate Reformist Faction seeks to mend the divide between Smith's free-market capitalists and Day's radical distributist anarchists, so he creates progressive distribustist laborism without the anarchism.

    Dorothy Day
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kx_tex_dorothy_day.png
Role: General, Archregentnote  (Reformists win 2nd Holy League American Congress - Day elected)
Party: Holy American League-Catholic Worker Factionnote , Holy American League-Anarcho-Syndicalist Faction note  (Syndicalists win Socialist Election), Holy American League-Moderate Reformists Factionnote  (Moderates win Socialist Election), Holy American League-Christian Communist Faction note  (Communists win Socialist Election)
Ideology: Christian Anarchismnote , Christian Syndicalismnote  (Syndicalists win Socialist Election), Christian Socialismnote  (Moderates win Socialist Election), Christian Communismnote  (Communists win Socialist Election)
In-Game Biography: Click to Show

  • Chummy Commies: The vision of Day, the most left-leaning of Arch-Regent Carroll's potential successors, is a syncretic fusion of anarchism, democratic communalism and traditional Catholicism. Under her reign, the living standards of the average American greatly improves, as Day expands welfare and charity, and grants rights to minorities and women.
  • Internal Reformist: Should the Holy American League emerge victorious in the American Civil War, Day becomes the leader of its left-wing reformist faction, which pushes for fully embracing distributist economics, gender equality, democracy and, most controversially, the decentralization of the Empire.
  • Prematurely Grey-Haired: By the time the Second American Civil War erupts and she is made Arch-Regent, Day is likely only in her mid-40s or early to mid-50s, but has a full head of grey hair. Justified, since the turmoil of the Civil War, New Gunpowder Plot, Inquisition and conquest of Canada and Mexico was likely unbelievably stressful to her as a committed pacifist.
  • Reluctant Retiree: If Browder in the CSA comes to power, she'll be forced to retire.
  • The Remnant: When the American Civil War erupts, Day initially sides with the Combined Syndicates of America. If the CSA loses and Philip Carroll emerges victorious, she'll become the leader of the left-wing reformists in his Empire of Our Lady of Guadalupe, seeking to turn the new America toward socialism like what the CSA once tried to.

    Louis Even
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_quebec_louis_even.png
Role: Archregentnote  (Red Legion coups Day)
Party: Red Legion of Americanote
Ideology: Social Creditnote

  • Commie Nazis: Even within the Red Legion practices a white supremacist Social Credit that supports egalitarianism only for whites.
  • Renegade Splinter Faction: The Red Legion is a fringe split from the Klan. Their contradictory ideas of a White Socialist Kingdom is bizarre to say the least. Although they advocate the 'Back to Liberia' plan, they only are willing to make their Kingdom an only white one, with a socialist flair on top of it.
  • The Coup: The Red Legion sick of Day's anarchist and anti-racist tendencies, coup her with hope in restoring racism and making their kingdom an authoritarian socialist white only one.

  • Conspicuously Public Assassination: If he pays a visit to London, against Carroll's advice, after its conquest, he is assassinated in public by a lone gunman who rushes him from a crowd, armed with a pistol.
  • Puppet King: James III has little to no power, as Phillip Carroll has retained his own authority at James' expense.
  • Rightful King Returns: Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart is the most senior surviving male-line descendant of James II of England and the legitimate heir to the throne of Scotland. If Philip Carroll takes over the American Union State, he can be crowned King of America, as well as King of England if America manages to conquer the Union of Britain.
  • Too Dumb to Live: As King of America, an already unpopular idea, James can try to conquer the syndicalist (and fiercely anti-monarchist) Union of Britain. He can then pay a visit to London, the former capital of said Syndicalist Union, without much security to speak of. He is promptly shot and killed while giving a speech.
  • Unexpected Successor: While the Duke of Alba is the senior Jacobite pretender, he had never pushed the claim or expected it to come into play, let alone in a republican, anti-Catholic break off colony before Philip Carroll invites him to take the throne of America.

  • Passed-Over Inheritance: Although María is King James III's only child, her youth and lack of experience might cause the Holy American League to instead crown a distant cousin, the King of Bavaria, when her father is assassinated.
  • Puppet King: Queen Mary, like her father, is but a puppet to Regent Philip Carroll (if not even moreso due to her young age and lack of experience).
  • Young and in Charge: Mary is only 10 at game start, and is likely to be just a teenager upon ascending to the throne.

    Jesus Christ

Role: Kingnote  (Christ declared King)

  • Immortal Ruler: Yes, THE Jesus Christ can be declared King by Arch-Regent Carroll. This is regarded as a foolish and unexpected move by basically everyone, and necessitates the calling of a Regency Council upon Carroll's death.
  • Secret Character: The fact that Jesus Christ has an in-game portrait and biography at all in a WWII-era wargame would seem bizarre to most people, and the only way either can be seen is to manually switch it with Carroll's portrait by clicking on the Arch-Regent.
