     Japanese Underworld

Hozuki

Voiced by: Hiroki Yasumoto
The titular protagonist, Hozuki is the stern second-in-command to Lord Enma and takes his job very seriously. He remains calm no matter the current crisis, and when he's not busy running Hell he likes to raise goldfish plants.

  • Berserk Button:
    • Don't tell him that he looks like Hakutaku. He has just enough self control to save the immediately following violence for an inanimate object. In fact, just don't be Hakutaku in particular.
    • He also hates it when people disturb his sleep.
    • Him being an orphan is also one in his youth, and the folks who make fun of this usually don't get off scot-free.
  • Big Eater: While he normally doesn't demonstrate, he really lets loose on occasion. In Episode 1 of part 2 of Season 2, Hozuki, Shiro and the Zashiki-warashi twins went to an eating contest at a new restaurant. He finishes his meal ahead of everyone else, and then orders the same things they did and ate them all by himself.
  • Brutal Honesty: A champion at this.
  • Carry a Big Stick: His trademark weapon is a spiked club.
  • Chessmaster Sidekick: Despite being Number Two to Enma, it is in fact Hozuki the one actually running the show. As a matter of fact, the Japanese Underworld as it is today was designed by Hozuki himself during his first meeting with Enma in the ancient times.
  • Death Glare: His second most terrifying weapon. Amazingly, he's had this ability since he was a human child.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even a total Workaholic like him gets frustrated every now and then by how busy Japan is.
  • Exact Words: When he threatened to make every last member of his old village suffer in the after life for offering him up as sacrifice, he meant it. They now serve as decorations of the Realm of Great Burning where they are doomed to burn for eternity, as per his "artistic vision".
  • Heavy Sleeper: And an angry heavy sleeper at that, should you lack the gumption to wake him up early, as Enma found out the hard way.
  • Human Sacrifice: He was one when he was alive. He claims to hold no particular animosity over this, but he also had every person involved in the incident burning at a stake in front of Izanami's palace.
  • Not So Above It All: Hozuki is a consummate professional who takes his work very seriously. He has no issue with enjoying himself if the situation allows it though, as shown during the Bon Festival when he's decked out in food and souvenirs and beating the taiko drum.
  • Number Two: Is this to Lord Enma. In fact, he enjoys playing The Man Behind the Man more than actively ruling the underworld despite him being superior to Enma in every way.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Has literally never been seen smiling.
  • Self-Made Man: Worked his way up through the ranks of hell to become Enma's right hand demon.
  • Serious Business: Hozuki treats everything he does as this, even the more mundane things like sleeping, exercising and raising his goldfish plants.
  • Soul Jar: How Hozuki the oni came to be, after many spirits came to inhabit his dead body.
  • Was Once a Man: Prior to becoming an oni, he was an ordinary orphan named Cho. Until the crops started failing and his fellow villagers offered him as a Human Sacrifice to bring rain.

Lord Enma

Voiced by: Takashi Nagasako
The ruler of Japanese Hell and Hozuki's boss. It's his duty to judge the damned and assign them to hells based on their sins.
  • Butt-Monkey: Despite being king of the demons, no one (Especially Hozuki) shows him much respect.
  • Gentle Giant: At least 9 feet tall, and a gigantic teddy bear.
  • Large and in Charge: He easily dwarfs those around him, though much of the "large" part is his immense girth.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: As the ruler of Japanese Hell, it's his job to judge the deceased for their sins and punish them accordingly, but the guy's a sweet goofball when off duty.
  • The Alleged Boss: Type 2. People are shocked when they find out he's the one in charge instead of Hozuki.

Shiro, Kakisuke, and Lurio

Voiced by: Yumiko Kobayashi (Shiro), Hiroki Gotou (Kakisuke), Takashi Matsuyama (Lurio)
Momotarou's former companions that now work in Animal Cruelty Hell. Shiro is a white dog, Kakisuke is a monkey, and Lurio is a pheasant.

Karauri

Voiced by: Tetsuya Kakihara
A young demon who works alongside Nasubi under Hozuki.
  • Covert Pervert: He's secretly a masochist and wants O-koh to beat him.
  • Older Than They Look: He's a young adult, but thanks to his species being an imp-like race he looks like a little kid.
  • Precocious Crush: Although he's technically not a kid, he still looks like one and is attracted to the obviously adult O-koh.

Nasubi

Voiced by: Touko Aoyama
A young demon who works alongside Karauri under Hozuki.

O-Koh

Voiced by: Eri Kitamura
A beautiful demon that works in Mortal Hell. She has a fondness for snakes and is friends with Hozuki.
  • Femme Fatale: Since she works in Mortal Hell, it's her job to lure sinners with her beautiful looks so they can get tortured.
  • Fluffy Tamer: She loves snakes to the point that she carries around a live pair that act as the obi for her kimono.

Yasha-ichi

Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda
Shiro's superior in the Animal Cruelty Hell and one of its best torturers.

Cookie

Another of Shiro's superior in Animal Cruelity Hell

Mustard

Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki
The rabbit from the Japanese folktale Kachi Kachi Mountain. She works in Hell as a minion that tortures the deceased for their sins, and her methods are so brutal that she's earned the respect of Hozuki.
  • Badass Adorable: A cute little bunny...and one of Hell's most exalted torturers.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Normally a sweet, soft-spoken rabbit, but if she hears the word badger she goes into an unstoppable rampage.
  • Berserk Button: Do not mention badgers around her. Anyone who does will soon regret it as it turns her immediately vicious to the offender
  • Killer Rabbit: Quite literally, as this rabbit is one of Hell's top torturers.
  • Meaningful Name: She makes a special, painful ointment with bell peppers as the main ingredient to rub on open wounds. She calls it mustard.

Zashiki Warashi

Voiced by: Yui Ogura (Niko), Satomi Sato (Ichiko)
Twin Zashiki-warashi Hozuki finds in an abandoned house. They come to live in the Hell Palace afterwards.
  • Big Eater: So long as you serve them red bean rice and soup.
  • Creepy Twins: Can be just slightly creepy or really creepy.
  • Creepy Monotone: Both of them speak like this 24/7. They also laugh and express anger like that, while remaining as deadpan as ever.
  • Everyone Calls Her "Barkeep": The twin girls initially had no name to tell themselves apart, due to them not needing those in the past, and as such everybody is content with addressing them by their title alone.
  • Genki Girl: Genki Girls to be exact. Despite their eternal Dull Surprise expressions, zashiki warashi are noted by Hozuki to be mischievous in nature. Sure enough, the first thing they do upon arrival at the Hell Palace is to run everywhere.
  • Meaningful Name: Hozuki decided to name them Ichiko and Niko, literally meaning "little No.1" and "little No.2", respectively. Ichiko is the black-haired twin, and she gets the "No.1" name because she's generally the one to speak first.

Stripping Hag

     Shangri-La

Hakutaku

A divine beast of good luck and vast knowledge that resides in Shangri-La. He works as a pharmacist, teaching herbal medicine to Momotarou and rabbits. He's a philandering womanizer who, despite looking a lot like him, hates Hozuki's guts.
  • Butt-Monkey: Is constantly getting smacked around by Hozuki and the girls he's cheated on.
  • Terrible Artist: A recurring gag is his complete inability to draw.
  • The Casanova: He's actually pretty popular with the ladies, but every time he gets a new girlfriend he gets dumped (and beat up) almost immediately after due to his cheating ways.

Momotarou

A popular hero from Japanese folklore that defeated an island of oni. At first he caused trouble in hell trying to relive his glory days, but he mellowed out after Hozuki sent him to Shangri-La to become Hakutaku's assistant.

  • Heel Realization: Realizes how much of a jerk he's been trying to be a hero again, and becomes much nicer as a result.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: A legendary hero of Japanese myth. Now an apprentice medicine maker for a dopey God.
  • Punny Name: His name translates to 'peach boy', and one of his duties in Shangri-La is picking peaches.
