Season 3 Onwards

Gao's classmate and one of his first friends. Noboru was ranked the second-best Buddyfighter in the 6th grade before the series began, in the last ABC Cup. He was dismissive of Gao's skills at first, claiming that most of his wins were through pure luck. Also, that's a tiger on his shirt, not a kitten.

Noboru plays with a Dragon World deck, specifically using Dragon Knights. His Buddy is El Quixote, his Core Deck Case is a lance, and his Buddy Skill is chest armor. After being Brainwashed by Gratos, he switches to a Dungeon World deck based on the Knight attribute, and continues to use it after being freed. In X2, for the GGG Cup, he uses an Omni Lord Knights Deck

  • Animal Motifs: Tigers. Or kittens, according to everyone else.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: He and El Quixote both approach Bal the night before their match against Kyoya and plead for an Impact Monster card. Luckily though, Bal wanted to give them one anyway.
  • Break the Haughty: Losing to Tetsuya, of all people, made him realize how his Buddyfight skills aren't as good as he thought they were.
  • Brainwashed: Gratos brainwashed him to serve as one of the "Inverse Fiends", but he is freed after losing to Miserea.
  • Can't Catch Up: With Gao and Tasuku, something he deeply resents.
  • Dual Wielding: His primary weapon card, Dragoanthem, is comprised of short swords.
    • His variant of Dungeon World deck allows him to equip two items (lances in this case) at once during a buddyfight.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Kiri while under mind control due to them both being Dungeon World users. Noboru also gets Miserea's evil clone, which is called Dark Miserea. They both also have a relationship to Gao. Friendship in Kiri's case and rivalry in Noboru's.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He's very jealous of Gao drawing a Buddy Rare card and constantly winning.
  • I Coulda Been a Contender!: Not through retiring, per se. He was bribed to into taking a dive during the last ABC Cup. This becomes his main motivation for the next ABC Cup.
    • Yet again with the World Buddy Masters tournament. He wanted to face Gao in the tourney, but he is hospitalized after his match with Sakate, forcing him to drop out of it.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: El Quixote eventually helps him outgrow it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He may act haughty and brush Gao's skills off as luck, but he does consider Gao a true friend.
  • Put on a Bus: His family moves to another country at the end of episode 15.
    • The Bus Came Back: Returns in Episode 47 to join the Gaen Cup. He eventually moves back to Japan by time of Triple D.
  • Tsundere: Type 1.
  • The Rival: One of Gao's major rivals.
  • Tiger Versus Dragon: He's one to Gao.
  • Took a Level in Badass: for the GGG Cup in X2, he uses an Omni Lord deck.
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Gao. The two eventually reconcile.
  • Worf Effect: Noboru is typically one of the first characters to lose against a major enemy that Gao has to eventually face just to show of powerful they are.

Jin Magatsu

Katana World

Voiced by: Ryota Asari (JP), Brendan Hunter (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/h073.gif
It's never too late to make some changes, become a better person... you know, stuff like that.

A 7th Grader and member of the Card Club. Has a notorious reputation for fixing Buddyfights for money, but is in fact a pretty nice guy. Fights with a Katana World Deck themed around Skull Warriors. His Buddy is Evil in Heart, Yamigitsune.

  • Brainwashed: Courtesy of Gratos. He is freed after being defeated by Tetsuya and Zanya.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Zanya while under mind control as both are Katana World users and Jin gets an evil clone of Ziun.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: His appearance, motives, and deck theme would make you think he's a bad guy, but he's really not a bad guy.
  • Only in It for the Money: Initially disinterested in the ABC Cup and being payed by Shido to participate, but Gao's influence gets him interested.
  • Red Baron: The Uncrowned King.
  • Taken for Granite: After he is captured by Noboru, he is petrified so Grastos's mind control to set in. He is petrified again after losing to Tetsuya and Zanya per the rules established by Yamigedo.
  • Yōkai: What the Skull Warriors are based on.
  • Younger Than They Look: Does he really look like a Middle Schooler?

Suzuha Amanosuzu

Magic World

Voiced by: Mikako Takahashi (JP), Michelle Molineux (EN)

Heir to the world famous Amanosuzu Group. She has a crush on both Tasuku and Gao, the latter developing after he beat her in the ABC Cup.She uses a Magic World Deck that focuses on Wizards. Her buddy is Center of the World, Mary Sue.

  • Anime Hair: Her hairstyle is... rather unique.
  • Brainwashed: By Gratos.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Tetsuya while under Grato's mind control due to them both using magic world decks with an emphasis on spells. She also gets Death Asmodai, Omni Lord Asmodai's evil clone.
  • Fangirl: For Tasuku... and later Gao.
  • The Ojou: Suzuha is the heiress to rich Amanosuzu group and she often uses her family's wealth and influence to help the protagonists.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: She wears a dress not unlike one a princess would wear.
  • Rich Bitch: The giant blimp she's always seen in is actually her home and she can be rather condescending at times. Subverted later on. She's actually pretty nice to people she knows.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: She has a crush on Tasuku. She later becomes this for Gao as well.
  • Taken for Granite: She has been turned into a stone statue after her defeat against Noboru in Hundred so that Gratos can put her under mind control.

Genma Todoroki

Legend World

Voiced by: Kenta Miyake (JP), William Scott (EN)

Leader of the Middle School's Seifukai. Champion of last years ABC Cup tournament. He uses an Ancient World Deck, focusing on Dragon Lords. His Buddy is Martial Arts Dragon Emperor, Duel Sieger

  • Forgotten First Meeting: He met Gao when they were younger. In fact, he was good friends with Gao's older brother Yota.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Gao beats him using a card he gave to Yota, who passed it on to Gao.
  • Hot-Blooded: Just watch his fights. The man really gets pumped.
  • Ignored Epiphany: The moral he took from Yota's Mighty Sunfighter stories was that the Mighty Sunfighter representing the guiding light that needs to rise up to protect the weak, which led to Yota writing him a story specifically to get the proper moral across (the Mighty Sunfighter represents the light that exists in everyone willing to stand up), but the trauma due to Yota dying almost immediately after caused Genma to block it out.
  • Large Ham: The largest ham thus far.
  • Suddenly Shouting: When his Buddy monster is out.
    • He also really hams it up when pretending to be Captain Answer.
  • Taken for Granite: Gratos does this while brainwashing him.
  • The Worf Effect: After his first two matches in the ABC Cup, he's lost every time since.
  • Younger Than They Look: Seriously, he looks way too old to be in Middle School.

Totsuo Doai

Danger World

Voiced by: Adam Hunter (EN)

Second-in-command of the Seifukai. He uses a Danger World deck and his Buddy is Fighting Dragon, Demongodol.

Kazane Fujimiya (Wind)

Dungeon World

Voiced by: Mariko Honda (JP), Jessica Hilbrecht (EN)

The champion of the Castle card store. She uses a Dungeon World deck, using Adventurer and Dungeon Enemy. Her Buddy is Blade Wing Phoenix. During the events of Buddyfight Hundred, she is employed at the card shop.

  • Action Girl: One of the few Buddyfighters who’s female, though her gender isn’t apparent at first.
  • Badass Adorable: She’s a cute cheerful girl, and Castle’s Champion.
  • Cheerful Child: Discounting the example listing in Heroic BSoD below, she’s a very energetic kid.
  • Heroic BSoD: Gets depressed after her fight with Davide due to his cheating. Gao's fair victory against him cheers her up though.
  • In the Hood: Only during her first appearence.
    • Sweet Polly Oliver: During her first appearence, the boy who she's Buddyfighting is shocked when he finds out she's not really a guy. Gao has a similar reaction.
  • Plucky Girl: One of the few female characters who actually Buddyfights.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Wore a hood in her introduction, generally has an androgynous look to her, and her nickname (Wind) didn't lend to any gender. Thus, Gao and others were shocked to learn that she was female.
  • Tomboy: She looks like this, enough to make people think she’s a boy, though her personality comes off as more energetic that what is typical.

Paruko Nanana/Mikado

Hero World

Voiced by: Sora Tokui (JP), Carol Anne-Day (EN), Laura Rushfeldt (EN, Ace)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/buddyfight_character_large_332x363_parukonanana.jpg

The main Combat Commentator of the series. In the beginning, she attributed all of Gao wins to dumb luck but was eventually convinced that he may have skill after all. She uses Hero World and her buddy is Martian UFO, Takosuke.

By the time of Hundred, she's working for an actual news agency covering Buddyfights.

In Ace, She marries Gao, and is Yuga's Mother.

Hitotaba Neginoyama | Captain Answer/Captain Answer "OverLord"

Hero World

Voiced by: Masashi Ebara (JP), Tony Valdez (EN)

One of Gao's teachers at Aibo Academy. He teaches Buddyfighting and is really absent-minded. At least during his day job. He is also the superhero Captain Answer.

  • Absent-Minded Professor: Forgets that the two principals are still in the boxing ring after the ABC cup is over among various other blunders.
  • One Extra Member: Captain Answer was the ninth Omni Lord chosen to fight against Yamigedo.
  • Opaque Lenses: His eyes aren't visible behind his glasses.
  • Refusal of the Call: He was supposed to be one of the Omni-Lords back when Yamigedo first appeared. However he couldn't help them due to a crisis on Hero World.
  • Secret Identity: Zigzagged. He keeps the fact that he is Captain Answer a secret, but his mustache is fake, so this may not be his actual identity either.
  • Sentai: His Hero World deck is full of them.

Nisei Nitsuke

Voiced by: Hans Wackershauser (EN)

Another of Gao's teachers, who teaches more standard school subjects.

Gaito Kurouzu

Darkness Dragon World

Voiced by: Shouta Aoi (JP), Adam Forward (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gaito_and_abygale_in_the_opening.png

The third protagonist of Triple D and a Darkness Dragon World User. His buddy is Abygale. He is Japan's third representative to the World Buddy Cup and has a rivalry with Kyoya Gaen in season three. In season four, he returns as Darkness Dragon World's representative in the World Buddy Masters.

  • '80s Hair: His vortex-shaped hair.
  • Anime Hair: Has a big swirly puff of purple hair.
  • Animal Motif: His Core Gadget is that of a bird. Makes sense since his quest for power came after losing his pet bird to a cat.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Is this alongside Tasuku in a few episodes of Triple D.
  • Badass Adorable: A champion at Buddyfight and despite his dark and emo look and actions at first, he has a cute and kind side.
  • Badass Longcoat: His red vest counts.
    • The Dragon Force "Style of Retaliation" turns his vest into a long purple shimmering cape/vest.
  • Because Destiny Says So: He originally claimed his destiny would guarantee his win every time, however he dropped this after Character Development.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: He may be the strong silent type, but he has serious buddyfight skills.
  • Brains and Brawn: Gaito's the brawn to Tasuku's brains in Triple D, though that’s not to say he’s at all an idiot.
  • Broken Bird: Gaito's emo persona serves to hide his feelings of self pity and weakness after he lost his beloved pet bird.
  • Bully Hunter: Gaito was mistaken for a Buddyfighter who was taking cards from other kids but the truth was he was taking back cards from kids who were taking them from younger kids.
  • Cat Scare: A literal version; he’s deeply afraid of cats. Justified as it was a cat that ate his beloved bird.
  • Creepy Child: At first, but subverted after he Took a Level in Cheerfulness.
  • Creepy Good: He's a good guy, once you get to know him. Drops the creepy part after he Took a Level in Cheerfulness
  • Curtains Match the Windows: His purple hair goes with his purple eyes.
  • Cute Bruiser: He’s only 12, but look at his win streak!
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Much like Gao and Batzz, Gaito's new impact, Death Count Requiem, has Abygale's immense power flow into him, giving him Black Dragon Wings, A Dragon Headpiece, and a Scythe. However, Gaito has yet to master the Impact, causing the power to overflow and threaten to kill him if he isn't careful.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Though he uses a Darkness Dragon World deck which is usually associated with villainous characters, he has a habit of helping other people in trouble and is one of the main heroes in both Triple D and X.
  • Deadly Gaze: Gives one to his enemies or opponents when he Buddyfights.
  • Death Glare: Has a habit of giving these when he’s especially pissed.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: When he first lost to Gao, along with Hidden Eyes.
  • The Eeyore: He’s quite pessimistic at first, but he gets better.
  • Elemental Eye Colors: His purple eyes matches his dark-themed deck.
  • Emo Tween: He's a twelve-year-old emo kid. Made more obvious when he unlocks the Dragon Force of Sadness.
  • Eye Beams: His third eye shoots a beam in his Dragon Force form.
  • Feather Motif: During the middle point of Triple D, Gaito starts hallucinating white feathers [1]. The meaning behind them is revealed with his backstory.
  • Freak Out: When he first looses to Gao, he flips out pretty badly.
  • Friend to All Children: He fights other Buddyfighters to get back cards that they stole from younger players. He also comforts Bal when the latter thinks it's his fault that Abygale's impact monster card was stolen.
  • Frilly Upgrade: When he earned his Dragon Force of Sadness in episode 35 of Triple D.
    • Gets a frilly level up when his Dragon Force of Sadness becomes his Dragon Force "Style of Retaliation" in episode 45.
  • Goth: His appearance alone qualifies him as this.
  • Graceful Gentlemen Like Purple: He's 12-years-old and quite a bit of his colour scheme is purple (hair, eyes, etc).
  • Gravity Is Purple: Most of his items and spells are gravity-related.
  • Guyliner: Red eyeliner around his eyes.
  • Hidden Eyes: Happens some days when he's down in the dumps or seriously angry.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: Gaito gives Gao an embarrassed blush along with this in one episode of Triple D.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: He has more than one Impact Monster.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He acts cold and aloof but has a nicer side to him.
  • Light Masculine and Dark Masculine: In Triple D, Gaito dresses in shades of black, grey and red and is stoic yet soft while Tasuku’s uniform is mostly white and post Character Development, he’s a caring and mature guy.
    • This also happens in X, where while Gaito’s choice in clothing remains the same, Kanata's soccer uniform is mostly coloured a bright blue, suiting his kind personality.
  • Luminescent Blush: Often occurs when someone calls him nice or soft.
  • Magical Eye: Gaito's Dragon Force has a magical third eye, on his forehead, in both forms.
  • Might Makes Right: Believes that being strong is the only way to protect others. At first.
  • Nightmare Face: He gives one hell of a face when he charges and draws, even up close. Stopped making these after he Took a Level in Cheerfulness.
  • No Social Skills: Even after he Took a Level in Cheerfulness, Gaito still has trouble with being social, with Abygale having to help him out.
  • Odd Couple: He and Tasuku become a platonic version in some episodes of Triple D.
  • Only Sane Man: After dropping his obsession with destiny and when Tasuku isn't around, Gaito tends to be the most rational and pragmatic compared to the rest of the main cast. Drops this though whenever A cat shows up.
  • Opposites Attract: He keeps getting paired up with the more energetic and kind characters…
  • Perpetual Frowner: Mostly pre-Character Development.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Main colour is purple, and he’s more than capable of destroying his opponents.
  • Purple Is the New Black: ZigZagged kind of as he wears both purple and black.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Well, purple hair, but he still fits.
  • Second Place Is for Losers: He sees Buddyfight as a way to show that he's the strongest, so he perceives losing as a sign of weakness. He gets better, especially in X.
  • Shrinking Violet: After Character Development sets in.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Despite how coldly he acts sometimes, he’s quite broken and weak inside. When he finally outwardly admits this, he awakens his Dragon Force of Sadness, and starts healing.
  • Super Mode: The Dragon Force of Sadness and its upgrade, the Style of Retaliation.
  • Third Eye: His Dragon Force of Sadness has one that shoots lasers.
    • As does it's evolution, "Style of Retaliation".
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Post-Character Development and Dragon Force Awakening, he longer keeps to himself and acts Emo but tries his best to hang out with the others. Tries being the key word.
  • True Companions: While he may have been rude to Abygale at points, Gaito truly cares for him and vice versa, even rushing to Abygale's aid when Big Machine tried to capture him, after the dragon sent in his resignation.
  • Tsundere: After his character development, his personality leans more towards this. Heck, even prior to his Character Development, he’s this.
  • When He Smiles: Gaito usually frowns most of the time, but when he does have a genuine smile, it’s pretty cute.
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: Starts to do this after he gets over his “destiny” obsession.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Believes this about his quest to be the best... at first. Later, he decides to make his own destiny.

Wataru Kageo

Magic World

Voiced by: Kanada Aki (JP)
A stage magician who thrives on the attention of his peers. He schemes to bring down those who deflect attention from his performances. His buddy is Illusionist of Shadowform, Silhouette Joe and he uses a Magic World deck built around Shadow Shade monsters. He competes in the preliminaries of the World Buddy Cup and loses to Gaito.
  • Attention Whore: Dislikes when people are stealing attention away from him.
  • The Bus Came Back: He and Silhouette Joe got themselves trapped in another dimension shortly after being introduced and yet are seen at the end of Triple D just fine.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: He tried to cheat in his match against Gaito by having Silhouette Joe steal his Impact Monster card, only to lose anyway because, as it turns out, Gaito had a second Impact Monster.
  • Did Not See That Coming: Was surprised to see that Gaito had a second Impact Monster.
  • Eyes Always Shut: On the rare occasion that they're not, he's either pissed off or plotting something.
  • Frame-Up: Tries to pull one on Bal, by making everyone think the little dragon ate everyone's lunches. Unfortunately for him, Jack steps in to defend the little dragon.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Falls into in the dark portal he tried to trap Gaito in for beating him.
  • Jerkass: Tried to frame Bal for eating all the lunches just because his presence drew away the attention of all the other kids while Wataru was showing magic tricks to.
    • He later stole Gaito’s Impact Monster card so he’d have a upper hand when the two fought. And see Sore Loser for what he did after he lost.
  • Perpetual Smiler: He has a smug smirk plastered on his face most of the time. Only times he doesn’t is when he gets especially pissed or is very aware that he screwed up badly.
  • Sore Loser: Attemps to trick Gaito into falling into a portal after the latter beat him in a Buddyfight.
  • Unexplained Recovery: He can be seen in the later episodes and the second outro of Triple D, implying that he and Silhouette Joe escaped from the shadow dimension at some point.

Black Death Dragon, Abygale/Awakened Black Death Dragon, Abygale/Annihilation Black Dragon, Abygale/Overturn Black Death Dragon, Abygale

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_m033.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gaito_and_abygale_in_the_opening_0.png
Your destiny... I'll make you offer it up to Gaito!

Gaito's buddy monster, a black dragon hailling from Darkness Dragon World. He is actually one of Kyoya's first artificial monsters, specifically made using DNA of Azi Dahaka. This technically makes Abygale Azi Dahaka's son.

  • Artificial Dragon: Abygale was an artificial monster based on Azi Dahaka that was created by Kyoya. His Awakened form even starts to look like Azi Dahaka, with eyes everywhere and a Belly Mouth.
  • Beast and Beauty: Abygale's the beast to Gaito's beauty.
  • Celestial Body: His full-size form's underbelly is full of stars.
  • Chest Blaster: As the Annihilation Black Dragon, Abygale is able to destroy a monster when enters the field or is destroyed. The destruction is depicted as such.
  • Equippable Ally: When Death Count Requiem is activated, Abygale becomes a set of dragonic armor and a scythe for Gaito, his power flowing into Gaito. This can be quite dangerous though.
  • Extra Turn: Abygale's Overturn allows him to end the turn at the beginning of the opponent's turn. In exchange, the player cannot attack on the turn after. While it's technically not a turn skip, it goes from the start of the turn to the end of the turn, allowing Death Count, Requiem to activate and possible win the game.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Which he receaived when he was beaten by Azi Dahaka who concluded that he was too weak to be part of his army.
  • Draconic Abomination: His underbelly is full of stars and his Unlimited Death Drain verges on Eldritch Abomination. A normal dragon this guy ain't, even by Darkness Dragon World's standards.
  • Limit Break: Has two Impact Monster cards thus far.
  • Metaphorically True: Abygale says that Azi Dahaka is his father. He was actually created artificially based on Azi Dahaka.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: In his full form, he lacks a body or connecting limbs.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Gains one as Annihilation Black Dragon, Abygale.
  • Sleep-Mode Size: He looks like a penguin and he uses the swirl of darkness atop of his head like a wheel to move around.
  • True Companions: With Gaito.
  • Wind from Beneath My Wings: His monster-destroying ability has him whip up three whirlwinds which merge together.

Illusionist of Shadowform, Silhouette Joe

  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He and Wataru tried to banish Gaito to a shadow dimension only for them to fall into the portal themselves.
  • Sleep-Mode Size: In his SD form, he looks like a chibi Wataru.
  • Thinking Up Portals: Can create portals to a shadow dimension.

Quintessence Crystal Dragon, Athora/Heavenly Crystal Dragon, Aldo Athora

Kanata Ozora's Buddy, a Prism Dragon monster from Star Dragon World.

  • Cloud Cuckoolanders Minder: Is usually the one who has to elaborate on things for Kanata.
  • Dragons Are Divine: Invoked with his overturn form, which gives him angelic gold wings.
  • Draw Aggro: His Overturn draws incoming attacks while invincible for a turn.
  • Everything's Better with Rainbows: His entire body is on a pastel rainbow gradient. His Overturn form, Aldo Athora, adds a lot more deeply saturated colors to his palette without entirely dropping the pastels.
  • Feathered Dragons: Invoked. He has a feather-like pattern on his wings. Played straight by his Overturn form, which has actual feathers with lots of colorful gems mixed in.
  • Gem Tissue: Covered in crystals, but not entirely made of them. Instead, they form a kind of natural plating covering his chest, neck, tail, and feet. He's also got a single rainbow-colored crystal for a horn.
  • No-Sell: Refuses to allow anyone to damage Kanata. Goes even further with his Overturn, which draws incoming attacks while invincible for a turn and even deals damage to the opponent in return.
