Zephy and the Witch's Den

The protagonist of the series and the witches he befriends and can potentially romance. Persecuted by the Knights of Requiem, shunned and vilified by the rest of humanity, and forced into hiding, they struggle to get by day-to-day, protecting their own, hunting down dragons for their meat to stave off madness, only to eventually transform into them, too.

Party Members

    In General
  • The Corruption: All of them are suffering from the Witch's Curse, where they have to eat dragon meat and drink dragon blood to maintain their sanity, but this also causes them to eventually transform into dragons themselves.
  • Elemental Powers: Each of the witches are assigned with an elemental attribute, and regardless of what dragons you make them devour, they will always gain skills of their elements.
  • Magic Is Feminine: All witches are female and Zephy is the only notable exception to this, presumably after Minessa and Karikaro fed him dragon blood in an emergency transfusion to save his life.
  • Rescue Romance: Zephy can end up romantically falling for Karikaro or Minessa, who both ended up saving his life at the start of the game. Laponette can also end up falling for Zephy, who saves her from the clutches of the knights.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Their Draconic Forms offer full heals, doubled stats and damage, and access to powerful Dragon Skills, but using the last one can cause significant Madness to the cast that can lead to the Madness End, if you're not careful.

Voiced by: Daiki Abe (Japanese), Edward Bosco (English)

A member of the Knights of Requiem. After Minessa ends up feeding him dragon blood to try and save his life, it turned him into the first male witch and subsequently given powers. He is then joined by a few others in order to get rid of his curse.

  • BFS: His "broom" is a greatsword that he repurposes as a Hover Board using his new access to magic. He uses it for some of his attacks in his Draconic Form.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: It's eventually revealed that his mother was a witch, who had transformed into a dragon and killed his father before him.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: As the protagonist of the game, he uses a regular longsword for combat and a mix of that and his greatsword in his Draconic Form.
  • Light 'em Up: Despite the name of his Limit Break suggesting Shock and Awe, his elemental alignment is very clearly Light, not lightning.
  • Magic Knight: He has exceptional sword skills as a former magic-less soldier, but quickly learns various spells and can be built to be an effective spellcaster as well.
  • The Unchosen One: Being what is seemingly the only male witch in existence sounds like The Chosen One material, right? Well... no. Despite being the perfect Dragon Star candidate from a character standpoint, him being male (and also not a pure witch, instead being a Half-Human Hybrid) actually makes him wholly incapable of replacing Varnir despite this perfect match.
  • The Witch Hunter: As part of the Empire's knights, he was this until he was turned into a witch himself. Zephy notes the irony that if ever any of his former comrades learns of his condition, they'll most likely kill him out of principle—or torture and experiment on him to discover how a male witch could come to be.

  • Cleavage Window: Karikaro's choice of attire shows off her cleavage. More of it is shown off when she transforms.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Her elemental alignment is Dark, but she's not evil, murderous, or particularly scheming and anti-social. If anything, she's one of the most caring and loving of the cast, especially towards the Little Sister Witches.
  • Mystical White Hair: As part of her being a witch, her hair is pure white.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Karikaro's attire has touches of purple and she happens to be a powerful witch.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Her usual attire has an opening that bares a portion of her back.
  • Sideboob: When Karikaro transforms, the outfit she wears shows off the side of her breasts.
  • Skeleton Motif: She has numerous skull motifs on her clothing.
  • Stripperiffic: Upon transformation, Karikaro's attire shows off a lot of her skin.
  • Supreme Chef: She is extremely good at cooking, which is especially helpful when the party needs to but does not want to devour raw dragon meat.

    Laponette

Voiced by: Hisako Tōjō (Japanese), Jad Saxton (English)

  • Animal Motifs: Butterflies. She has butterfly wings on her shoes, her garter-belt straps, and she loves Butterfly Ribbons from the Curio Shop. It could also reference the Butterfly of Doom, where trying to change the future results in even worse outcomes, something that Laponette often does.
  • Blow You Away: Her elemental alignment is Wind.
  • Glowing Eyes: When she uses her Clairvoyance, her eyes glow gold.
  • Hates Being Touched: Because when she touches someone, she can see their future, and what she sees usually isn't pretty.
  • Master Archer: Her weapon of choice is the crossbow, and she's the only one that does Shoot damage.
  • Tragic Keepsake: She has a bracelet from her older sister when she was a young witch. Said older sister is now a dragon and Laponette ends up having to kill her in the present day.
  • Waif Prophet: She has the power to see in the future, and is often haunted by what she sees to the point of being quite shy and hesitant.

  • The Friend Nobody Likes: With the exception of a Zephy actively trying to romance her, it's clear most everyone just tolerates her presence for her knowledge about potentially breaking the Witch's Curse and her being a useful party member.
  • The Gadfly: She's awfully fond of being cruel to and teasing the others purely for her amusement. It turns out to be a way to distance herself from normal witches and prevent them both from getting too emotionally attached, to make her job of finding a replacement god easier.
  • God in Human Form: She is actually an Aspect of Varnir, the Dragon Star, effectively an avatar of the world's god intended to search for a replacement and continue the cycle.
  • Minidress of Power: She wears a short skirt in her initial form and she is a witch with fire-based powers. She loses the skirt upon transforming, leaving her with a bikini bottom.
  • Mystical White Hair: When in her default form, her hair is colored white and makes use of fire magic.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: In her standard form, her dress shows off her cleavage and portion of her torso, albeit with a couple of strings over it. When she transforms, the strings over her cleavage vanish and her bust is barely covered up while more of her abdomen is shown.
  • Playing with Fire: Her elemental alignment is Fire and she claims to be the infamous mass-murdering Witch of Hellfire.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: When she transforms, her hair turns red.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She's approximately 200 years old, but she's long stopped counting.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Upon transformation, her strapless outfit reveals her back.
  • Sinister Scythe: Her weapon of choice are scythes.
  • Underboobs: When she transforms, the underside of her breasts is visible.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: She makes it clear that she's very unhappy with her inability to die and being forced to constantly repeat the cycle of faking her death and ingratiating herself with witches she'll eventually have to leave behind or convince to sacrifice themselves for the sake of the world.

Little Sisters

The trio of witches too young to join the battle, they mostly do chores around the den and have to be cared for by the rest of the party lest they go mad and turn into dragons.

    In General
  • Animal Motifs: With the notable exception of Faria, the rest of the Little Sisters have animal motifs in their clothes and to some extent, their physical appearances.
    • Monet has Rabbits.
    • Chiquita has Bats.
    • Pio has Cats.
  • Death of a Child: If any of the little sisters go mad and transform into a dragon, you can and will probably have to put them down. Ruruta is one little sister who was well in the process of the transformation and you will have to put out of her misery as part of the main plot.

    Faria
Voiced by: Chinatsu Akasaki (Japanese), Jeannie Tirado (English)

  • Permanently Missable Content: If all three of the Little Sisters have gone missing or turned mad and transformed into dragons, Faria will not join the party.
  • No-Sell: Her field spell allows the party to pass through hazardous terrain unharmed.
  • The Sixth Ranger: Should you meet the requirements, she will eventually join at the end of Chapter 6 as the 6th and final member of the party.
