Last Calling Characters

    Veilkiir

Veilkiir

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_veilkiir.jpg
The conscientious and silver-tongued heir apparent of the manorphis creature-kind.

The graceful and haughty prince of the manorphis. Although respectful of his superiors and their traditions, Veilkiir has a more progressive outlook and wields his intelligent mind with silvery diplomacy, able to subtly sway things to his favour. For a time, he plays an antagonistic role against Laeka’Draeon’s company, with his desire to see Yarad brought to justice under manorphis law. When his ward (Aena) has a change of heart and spares Yarad’s life, Veilkiir becomes an advocate for Laeka’Draeon, and later, joins the young dragon in his last, desperate mission to stop the Manna Eruption from igniting and destroying all of Valadae.

  • Creepy Awesome: The manorphis, in general, are depicted as unsettling, both in physical appearance, and demeanour. Veilkiir is no exception. At the same time, his clever and curious mind, as well as his show of fearlessness (and badass lightning control skills) during the Second Gathering give him placement in this trope.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Veilkiir and his kind are blue-black coloured creatures with bristles amidst their feathers, long hooked claws, and toothed beaks. They can also manipulate shadows and lightning. And while at first hostile toward Laeka’Draeon and his group, they are not inherently evil, and, in fact, end up becoming staunch allies (instigated by Veilkiir himself).

  • Frontline General: Though not an actual general by profession, Veilkiir is a skilled warrior and willingly leads the charge of his units into battle alongside Laeka'Draeon and Eran Va'eleon, during the Second Gathering.
  • Guile Hero: Implied to be very clever and manipulative, but always for just and noble causes. And since he runs in high-tier political circles, and has a more progressive outlook than his father, he holds a lot of sway in matters regarding his kind and the direction of how laws and actions are implemented across his domain.

  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted with Veilkiir in that, while his initial actions are antagonistic against Laeka'Draeon and company, he quickly becomes a staunch ally; helping to ensure Yarad is given clemency for his past crimes, as well as assisting Aena in securing an active war alliance between his kind and the other allied forces of Valadae. And more directly, saving Laeka'Draeon and his vanguard unit from the (what would have been fatal) lightning trap inside the eye of the Surge spell.
  • Royal Blood: Is the heir apparent of Duntrai and its surrounding territories.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Prince Veilkiir is very active in matters of his father’s territory, and, later, participates in Laeka’Draeon and Shifra’s campaign in the Second Gathering.
  • Shock and Awe: During the Second Gathering (Book 5), after Laeka'Draeon's advance unit breaks through the storm created by the Surge spell, a massive lightning trap is triggered. Veilkiir and his soldiers prove their skill and mettle and dispel the lightning by channelling it through their bodies and hurling it back into the storm. They continue to protect the rest of the group from further lightning attacks until the Surge spell is destroyed.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: Finds General Wrathmere's Project Atonement—to use mentally subdued creatures (supposedly convicted criminals) as vanguard assault units against the enemy—appalling and is calmly, but firmly, opposed to using such tactics.
  • The Social Expert: Is verbally savvy and quite intuitive and cunning. It is implied he almost immediately recognises Yarad as not being a hemlan when the group is first introduced to him. He also acts as the mediator between Laeka'Draeon's company and the Duintrai Keepers (aka the manorphis high council) and manages to convince his father (the Lord of Duintrai) and the Keepers to take the path of leniency (in regards to dealing with Laeka'Draeon and company) more than once.

    Hastklingr

Hastklingr

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_hastklingr.jpg
A fearless and hardened protector, holding absolute fealty to the manorphis concords.

A hardened and stern member of the manorphis Warden Velds, and Prince Veilkiir's personal Warden. In this, he rarely leaves the prince's side, tailing him like a second shadow. To be a Warden is to be an object; a weapon, a shield, a protector of his assigned ward; in this, Hastklingr thrives, through his rigorous application of self-deprivation and complete dedication to his calling.

  • Bodyguarding a Badass: He is the Warden to Veilkiir, whose fighting and tactical skills are nothing to scoff at. Veilkiir could easily hold his own in a fight, but since he is the sole heir to the manorphis realm, being assigned a Warden is mandatory.
  • Covered with Scars: Has numerous scars over his body, including across his face and neck, likely an accumulation of the many years spent as a dedicated and active Warden.
  • It's Personal: Hastklingr's unmistakable anger and disdain toward Yarad is attributed to the latter's betrayal against the Warden Velds (having once been a distinguished Warden, himself).
  • Lightning Bruiser: Can be considered this, as only the strongest and most highly skilled manorphis warriors are made Wardens. Also, manorphis, biologically, are very fast creatures.
  • No Sense of Humor: Is quite the humourless individual. He takes everything very logically and seriously.
  • Overly Long Name: Long names are a common tradition in manorphis society. Hastklingr's full name is: Hien Shalvol Eisht Hastklingr.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Has absolutely no sympathy or mercy for Yarad, and is bent on seeing him punished for his crimes. During his pursuit of the mage (through the sky) he even calls him an "abomination" and demands he faces justice.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Prince Veilkiir, his ward.

    Aena

Aena

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_aena.jpg
Is trained in the methods of demon-slaying, although has sharpened her skills for another reason ... revenge.

Is the cold and pragmatic ward of Prince Veilkiir (after undergoing the trials that made her a Gaalainven), whose past traumas steered her life to the path of a demon-slayer and avenger. She is initially hostile and unsympathetic of Laeka’Draeon’s company (especially Yarad), and her demands for justice see her in a duel to the death against the mage. It is only by Ghinzel’s intervention and heart-wrenching pleas, that she annuls the fight and spares Yarad’s life. Under Veilkiir’s sanction, she joins Laeka’Draeon’s company to witness first-hand the supposedly ‘good’ change in Yarad.

  • Action Girl: Definitely qualifies as she is a highly-skilled fighter, trained to track and kill cacodemons.
  • Blade Lock: Aena initiates this with Yarad, blocking him from delivering the killing blow against General Wrathmere with the blade of her naginata.
  • Broken Bird: Strongly fits this condition, even to the point of her obsessive pursuit of nothing but revenge.
  • Commonality Connection: Although not expounded upon as far as forming a friendship, Aena and Shifra are very similar in temperaments, drive, skills with bladed weapons, as well as a sense of purpose and practicality.
  • Creepy Awesome: When in her full Gaalainven attire, she looks like an assassin from some fiendish cult—the look intended to unsettle opponents. She’s a highly-skilled fighter, graceful and deadly; her experience given some limelight when cacodemons attack the group as they travel the Kiiyoten moors.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: The time in her life which she shares with Yarad (after everything goes horribly wrong), which is especially tragic from her point-of-view as she loses her entire family and home and is left orphaned to fend for herself. It is never explained how she ended up with the manorphis, but pretty much all of her life from Wrathmere's raid to the forzaeder doen with Yarad was spent in bitterness, loneliness, and hate-fuelled desire for revenge.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: When in her Gaalainven attire, she by all appearances, looks extremely villainous, however, the truth is the opposite; Aena is not evil at all—just a troubled, heart-broken young woman, out to avenge her murdered family.
  • Flung Clothing: Her light and loose-fitting casual traveller’s clothes are designed to be removed quickly if she needs to engage in conflict.
  • Forgiveness: Aena spares Yarad’s life, and, in the time leading up to, and during, the Second Gathering, acts as his ally (eventually forgiving his role in the deaths of her family and re-directing her fury to General Wrathmere). Afterwards, Yarad and Aena are seen spending a lot of time together.
  • Harmful to Minors: Starvos Wrathmere and his Denin-hunting raiders destroy the Etheridge home and butcher Aena's family—she, being the sole survivor, and no more than 13 years old at the time.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Initially bent on executing her revenge against Yarad through the forzaeder doen, Aena stays her killing blow, at first due to Ghinzel’s heartfelt pleas, but over the course of time spent with the companions, and speaking frankly with Yarad on several occasions, she comes to understand he is not her real enemy, and so becomes an ally.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Aena is able to prevent Yarad from tipping over the edge and becoming this after he spirals into Unstoppable Rage during his showdown with General Wrathmere .

  • If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him!: In the Chapter, The Price of Vengeance (inBook 5), Aena thwarts Yarad's lethal blow against General Wrathmere for this reason.
Yarad: Why are you protecting him? He murdered your family! He is nothing but a monstrous butcher.
Aena: And if you kill him as you are now, you will become one as well.
  • It's Personal: Her reason for initially going after Yarad; she blames him for the massacre of her family since it was him staying with them that ended up making them a target of General Wrahmere's raids.
  • Lady of War: A highly-skilled fighter, trained by both monks and magically enhanced arts of the manorphis, who is, for the most part, aloof and understated in her mannerisms (although she can give a mighty Death Glare).

  • Naginatas Are Feminine: Aena's weapon of choice is a naginata (and she is very skilled at wielding it).
  • She-Fu: In addition to her naginata-wielding skills, she is also skilled in hand-to-hand combat, and often utilises some form of magical augmentation to boost her strikes—particularly her jumps and kicks.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: Is appalled by General Wrathmere's Project Atonement—to use mentally subdued creatures (supposedly convicted criminals) as vanguard assault units against the enemy—and strongly opposes the proposal (alongside her manorphis mentor, Prince Veilkiir).
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In choosing mercy over revenge in regards to Yarad, and having a Heel–Face Turn, temporarily joining Laeka'Draeon's group, where she gets to know them, defends them against cacodemons, and even saves Ghinzel from a boulder flung by Biekrel'Sorgh. The trope is less developed due to her being a supporting character in only one book.

    Aej

Aej

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_aej.jpg
The proud and haughty son of a great prince and legacy.
A proud and noble unicorn colt, descended from the unicorn's royal bloodline; the grandson of Great Stal-Marr (the king of unicorns) and successor to Alvran the Shield. Laeka'Draeon's appearance in the Omet Woods has far-reaching consequences that tip Aej's perfectly planned world into chaos. And Aej is not about to forgive him for it.
  • Anger Born of Worry: The primary reason for Aej's outburst and aggression against Laeka'Draeon is due to his anguished concern over Ubi's welfare and safety, ever since she disappeared from the Omet Woods.
  • Arranged Marriage: He is betrothed to Ubi(revealed in the chapter, My Light, in Book Five), although the pair have known each other since they were young, so they are not actually strangers. And, Aej is genuinely in love with her, and (while averse to the arrangement) Ubi does not dislike him, making their future a possible Perfectly Arranged Marriage.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Aej appears the type to stew over his emotions and be easily angered, while Ubi has a much softer and kinder disposition.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Aej comes to an understanding with Laeka'Draeon in regards to his quest and Ubi's part in it—however it's pretty clear he is still angry and disapproving of the situation.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Aej is an ally to Laeka'Draeon's cause, and his intentions are noble. However, he is aggressive and obstinate, with a rather mean streak.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Aej is extremely unhappy and jealous about Ubi's decision to remain with Laeka'Draeon and continue helping him on his quest.
  • Heartbroken Badass: He's a skilled fighter, both close-range and with Light magic, and is visibly dismayed and emotionally wounded by Ubi's rebuffs, and her explanations on why she originally ran away from her home.
  • Hot-Blooded: As witnessed in his assertive and fiery mannerisms, he's clearly a passionate and gung ho individual.
  • I Am X, Son of Y: Aej introduces himself to Laeka’Draeon in this manner, with an air of disdain.
Aje: I am Aej, son of Astair, son of Stal-Marr, successor to Alvran the Shield.
  • Jerkass: He deliberately sets up the companions' reunion with Ubi so that only Laeka'Draeon comes into the glade—and then outright attacks him with no warning.
  • Legacy Character: He is the grandson of Great Stal-Marr and as such is the heir to Alvran the Shield, one of the triad leadership roles in unicorn society. It is never explained why he is the successor over his father (Astair)—but the possibility could lie in his colouring (black) which is a rare hereditary trait, and highly regarded.
  • Moment Killer: Aej’s angry brooding off to the side takes the bloom out of Laeka’Draeon and Ubi’s reunion.
  • The Needs of the Many: While the majority of the companions are vehemently opposed to Project Atonement, Aej seems to find it a reasonable sacrifice, in light of the situation.
Aej: Is it truly so despicable to have them sacrifice their lives for the greater good?
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: While Aej is unmistakably proud, harsh and temperamental, his interactions with Ubi show a softer, warmer side to him.

    Stal-Marr

Stal-Marr

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_stal_marr_2.jpg
A benevolent but reclusive king—strong in wisdom and magical prowess.
King of the unicorns and the current ruler of the kingdom of Whelvenlailil. Sta-Marr is a majestic and benevolent creature, his long-lived years gifting him with patience and wisdom, but also a deep-rooted sadness and aloof, resclusive tendencies. He is considered one of the most (magically) powerful beings in Valadae.

  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Stal-Marr's physical and magical aptitude is so great, he remains unaffected by the deadly manna of the Parasite and the corruption affiliated with it. During the Second Gathering, he fearlessly charges against the Yurek'stelin to help stop its impending rampage.

  • Immortal Ruler: He is a unicorn and the current ruler of the kingdom of Whelvenlailil.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Boedek asserts that Stal-Marr's magical prowess is so great that not even the taint of Darks Whelm or the Don-Chease can adversely affect him as it does with other unicorns.

  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Stal-Marr was alive during the War Of Shores, and was an active participant. More present to the story, he takes part in the Crown Meets, before travelling north to the Banded Plains, for the Second Gathering. There, he leads the unicorn forces and actively joins his subordinates when the Yurek'stelin attacks the allied defence lines.

  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Is a (rare) black unicorn who shares a few of the trope's personality traits as well (being aloof and distant, but caring).
  • The Philosopher King: Has ruled his kingdom since the end of the War of Shores, and is considered one of the wisest (current) rulers of Valadae. Whelvenlailil being a relatively peaceful and unchanged realm for hundreds of years is a testament to Stal-Marr's thoughtful and benevolent rulership.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Against his dark fur, Stal-Marr's golden eyes appear intense and dazzling.

    Hikaranu

Hikaranu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_hikaranu.jpg
The legendary demon-slayer from the Opaline Mountains.

One of the warrior monks of the Opaline Mountains, and slayer of the infamous cacodemon, Biekrel'Sorgh. A highly disciplined and self-sacrificing individual, Hikaranu is bound to the Nemblem Mountains wherein he guards the remnants of Biekrel’Sorgh—which he sealed within the depths of a twin-peaked mountain where the northern Beacon Thrones is concealed. The arrival of Laeka’Draeon’s company presents Hikaranu with an opportunity to assist in reviving the Throne’s channelling power.

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: He manipulates energies with special hand movements (including controlling Dontriavien's spirit fire, and locking/ unlocking an intricate magical barrier).
  • Death Mountain: The highest peak in the Nemblem mountain range is a cleft summit called the Horns of Biekrel’Sorgh wherein lies the essence of a powerful demon, which Hikaranu sealed away and now remains alongside in order to watch over the entity and ensure it never breaks free.
  • Demon Slaying: Hikaranu was (when alive) an active hunter of demonic forces. His skill (historically documented) is legendary—his most renown achievement being the slaying of Biekrel'Sorgh—the most powerful cacodemon in Valadilian history.
  • Faux Flame: While being sustained (in the physical realm) by Dontriavien's manna, Hikaranu is encased in a soft, ghostly green glow.
  • Friendly Ghost: Hikaranu's physical body perished hundreds of years prior to the events of Dragon Calling. It is his spirit that resides within the Nemblem Mountains, wherein he diligently guards the remnants of the cacodemon, Biekrel'Sorgh.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Is unyielding in his pursuit to smite corrupted forces. He certainly shows no mercy in regards to Hulborne, and, if he'd had enough transferred energy to spare, it's certain he would have struck down Fordon too.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Implied, as he was the strongest and most noble monk of his time, and sacrificed his life to defeat and seal away the wicked cacodemon Biekrel'Sorgh. Even after hundreds of years of residing within an evil-tainted mountain, he remains undefiled by the demon's presence.
  • Kill It with Fire: Hikaranu’s manipulation of Dontriavien’s spirit fire burns Hulborne to a charred husk.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: Hikaranu's hair colour is an indication of his magical heritage—the blue hair gene is passed down through certain hemlan bloodlines that possess an affinity for learning magic. Most of the monk clans of the Opaline Mountains have blue hair; the eastern clans being the origin of the unique genetic trait.
  • Native Guide: Having resided within the mountain for centuries, Hikaranu assists Laeka'Draeon's company by effectively guiding them through the labyrinthine paths webbed across and throughout the cliffs and slopes of Nemblem's tallest mountain peak.
  • Protectorate: As an Opaline Mountain monk, he is a defender of the helpless and those in need.
  • Warrior Monk: In every sense of the trope, leaning more toward the eastern variant.
  • We Help the Helpless: Implied to be the mantra of the warrior monks of the Opaline Mountains.
  • Wreathed in Flames: Is drawn into the physical realm and made manifest through Dontriavein's manna—making his first appearance haloed in bright green flames.

    Raunteshin

Raunteshin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_raunteshin.jpg
The kind and inquisitive guardian of the Beacon Throne of Darkness and Light.

A small and lithe serpentine drake, proficient in the wielding of the elements of Darkness and Light. Despite sentydes of isolation, Raunteshin’s sanguine disposition has never dimmed; her confidence in the goodness of creatures unchanged, despite the terrors and troubles plaguing the kingdoms she protects. Her awakening is short-lived as she is struck down by Vagel before she can transfer her life-energy to her Beacon Throne. The consequence leads to the Throne’s destruction. Despite the irreversible calamity, she is still able to infuse her spirit to Laeka’Draeon, in order to help him fulfil the rest of his quest.

  • All-Powerful Bystander: Like the other drakes before her, Raunteshin consciously bears witness to the entire goings-on in the kingdoms connected to her Beacon Throne, but while her body is in its enchanted, hibernation state, she is unable to directly interact with anything or anyone. The "all-powerful" aspect of the trope is downplayed, in that, while she is the most powerful elemental wielder (of Darkness and Light) in the entire series, she is not infallible.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: She speaks with a loosely 'Gregorian-styled' speech—implemented to mark her ancientness and belonging to a by-gone age.
  • Bequeathed Power: Raunteshin implants her spirit into Laeka'Draeon, subsequently bequeathing him the power to see the manna flows of all living (and non-living) things, and to single out manna threads in order to focus on and/ or manipulate. Could be considered the most powerful magical ability in the entire series.
  • Dying Race: Her kind are thought by many to be long-ago extinct, but Raunteshin is one of four serpentine drakes that remained alive to become the guardians of the Beacon Thrones. By the time Laeka'Draeon's company reaches her, she is the last.
  • Elemental Powers: Raunteshin is a serpentine drake of light, so it stands to reason she has the ability to manipulate that form of energy. She is also attuned to darkness—the second sacred force that connects and is connected to all things. This implies she has the power to manipulate all elements.
  • Giant Flyer: Subverted. When Laeka'Draeon reaches the Beacon Throne chamber, he is expecting a creature similar in size to the other drakes but discovers Raunteshin to be sealed inside a large shard of beryl that's not even as tall as Volten Vagel.
  • Glass Cannon: Is physically small and frail, but her elemental abilities could be considered the most powerful in the entire series.
  • Killer Bear Hug: Vagel kills her by crushing her chest with one arm and her neck with the other arm.
  • Last Of Her Kind: Is the last of the light serpentine drakes.
  • Light Is Good: She is a serpentine drake of the element of light and is a hopeful, pure, and benevolent creature—an excellent representation of how good and pure the natural flow of light should be.
  • Living Relic: She is one of four serpentine drakes that chose an existence of loneliness and self-isolation by becoming the living stabilisers of their respective Thrones, while the rest of their entire race sacrificed their lives to activate the Thrones’ powers in order to subvert the destruction of the first Manna Eruption.
  • Neck Lift: Vagel attacks her from behind and manages to grab a secure hold and lifts her up by the neck (his other arm closed around her chest).
  • Nice Girl: Although readers are only given a glimpse of her personality, her mannerisms and some of the things she says implies she is a sweet-natured and caring individual, with a more optimistic and hopeful outlook on life than the other drakes.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Not an actual dragon, but her kind are certainly inspired by the eastern variation of Earth dragons, being elongated, wingless (flight by magic), with hair-like manes and deer-like antlers.

  • Really 700 Years Old: She has been alive since the Elder Age, making her at least 2500 years old.
  • The Sacred Darkness: Is deeply attuned to (and holds hidden knowledge of) the element of darkness—a flow of energy she refers to as "giving form to the unseen" and a force which is connected to all things, connecting all things (alongside the flow of light).

    Jessa

Jessa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_jessa.jpg
Boistrous and blithe and not afraid to speak her mind.

A highly sociable and blithe satyr, Jessa is a childhood friend of Norf’s and a fellow Wood Musician. Rambunctious in body and voice, she is often the life of festive and social events and thrives off interactions with comrades and kin. After learning of Norf’s involvement with Laeka’Draeon’s quest and current location as a guest of the Royal Pavilions, Jessa tracks him down for a merry reunion, as well as a request for him to join her unit as part of the allied armies defensive lines.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Jessa's playful—albeit rough—interactions with Norf and his agitated aversions to her behaviour suggest this possible dynamic—although with Norf it's often the case that he acts out dramatically against anything he secretly enjoys
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: She is a satyr, and satyrs have a broad range of genetic colourations, including a range of browns, tan, orange, greys, and blushed yellows and reds.
  • Childhood Friends: Jessa and Norf grew up together, and were also schooled in the Wood Musician arts at the same time. Jessa mentions their families having mutual business ties and connections for generations.

  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Jessa's continued referring of Norf by his full name really grates on his nerves—which she (amusingly) couldn't care less about.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: When the Don-Chease and Yurek'stelin begin to overwhelm the defence-line forces, Jessa bravely rouses the others to face the end proudly, and keep fighting until their last breaths.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: It's pretty clear in her profile picture that her clothes are rather "huggy". In the book, her clothes are described as follows: "dressed in a tightly-wrapped forest green tunic and plum V-cut jacket which struggled to hold in her voluptuous chest".
  • Friend to All Children: Is friendly and encouraging to Ghinzel and has no qualms about him assisting the defence lines (during The Gathering), even though he's only a kid.

  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She has dusty-pink coloured hair and is a cheerful and outgoing individual.
  • Smack on the Back: She does this to Norf in a playful manner, which reinforces the declared long-time comradery between them.

  • Work Hard, Play Hard: Implied, as she mentions working diligently to become a Maestro—and considering she is assigned a leadership role as a part of the defence line forces for the Second Gathering. And then there's her personality, jovial, playful, intense and full of energy and good humour.

    Aurnraulath

Aurnraulath

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_aurnraulath.jpg
For the sake of love, made a choice that altered the course of Valadae.

Is the youngest of the Eight Heirs (of dragon royalty), known as the First Prince of Valadae. Aurnraulath is the second of two sons sired by the dragon king, Velhonoandrius the Second, the other son being the eldest of the eight, named Sephorelian. He is shown to be a deeply passionate individual, driven by emotions (clearly seen in his unshakable devotion to Celetheal that led to him betraying his father and siblings (and, ultimately, although unintentionally, all the dragons of Valadae).

  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Sadukravon captures Celetheal and threatens harm against her unless Aurnraulath gives him an orb of his blood. Aurnraulath is aware of what is at stake (blood given by free will can be used in blood-curses) but his love for Celetheal proves too strong and he agrees to the exchange—ensuring Celetheal is not only released unharmed but is given immunity to whatever ties are bound to his blood exchange.
  • Birth-Death Juxtaposition: Aurnraulath sacrifices his life to shield Celetheal and Laeka'Draeon(still in his egg) and help them escape the spread of Sod'minokul through the Sacred Lands. When Celetheal breaks through the barrier, she loses consciousness and drops her egg. The remnant of Aurnraulath's manna protects the egg when it hits the ground, and then cocoons around it, slowly absorbing into it and accelerating Laeka'Draeon's growth until it is completely absorbed, and Laeka'Draeon opens his eyes for the first time. It can be ascertained that Aurnraulath officially (and completely) dies when Laeka'Draeon is "born".
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Only Aurnraulath dies as a result of the activation of Sod'minokul against the dragons (Celetheal survives). He never truly got the chance to be a father, but all his actions in regards to his mate and their unborn child (Laeka'Draeon) are pretty strong indicators that he would have made an affectionate and dedicated parent.

  • Family Man: The love he has for his mate and child is absolute, even above his devotion to his siblings and father, and his duty as a dragon prince.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Aurnraulath’s blood exchange with Sadukravon (terrible and traitorous as it was) was only ever meant to curse the bloodlines tied to his. This, as it turns out, ends up not being the case at all. The reason is not specified but can be assumed to be a few reasons; the most likely being that all dragons are connected by a special manna-bond that ties them all together. So, if one is blood-cursed … they all are.
  • Held Gaze: Shares a deep and affectionate gaze with Celetheal, before he sacrifices his body in order to use his manna as a shield for Celetheal to break through the tainted barrier enclosed over the Sacred Lands and escape.
  • I Have Your Wife: Sadukravon baits and captures Celetheal for the sole purpose of luring Aurnraulath into making a blood offering, in exchange for her life. The dragon prince goes through with the bargain, even knowing it will have disastrous effects.
  • It's All My Fault: Does not try to diminish or deny his treachery, and is fully prepared for the assigned punishment, and although he is remorseful, he admits to his brother, Sephorelian, that he would do it again.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In the replay of past events through the Eye of Empyrean, Aurnraulath expresses his horror at the realisation of the full extent of his treason, and how far-reaching the Sod’minokul (blood curse) actually is—able to infect all of the dragons, not just the royal bloodline.
  • Posthumous Character: Aurnraulath is already dead by the time Laeka'Draeon awakens to his first sunrise. Poor Laeka'Draeon spends most of his quest thinking his father (and whatever other family he has) to be alive and in need to rescue—which is the driving hope behind his actions.
  • Recurring Dreams: Aurnraulath's memory of his blood betrayal to Sadukravon (in order to save Celetheal) haunts Laeka'Draeon's mind in the form of fragmented dreams.
  • Royal Blood: He is the youngest of the dragon king's eight children.
  • Sadistic Choice: Save his beloved and ensure her immunity, while dooming himself and his blood-relations to a terrible blood curse OR watch his mate be brutally tortured and killed, but avert the enemy obtaining a deadly advantage over his kind.
  • Treachery Is a Special Kind of Evil: He willingly gives Sadukravon an orb of his blood in exchange for Celetheal's life (and immunity), knowing the manticor would use it to create a blood curse against him (and the rest of the dragons' royal lineage). He betrays his kind by choosing to save his mate over his duty as a dragon prince. Unfortunately, he doesn't take into account the manna bond that all dragons share with each other ... meaning that blood as powerful as his (being a royal dragon) would affect all the dragons. The other dragon heirs make plans to sever his bond with the rest of dragon-kind to avert the curse's effect... but their actions come too late.

  • Youngest Child Wins: Inverted, as he ends up committing treason against his father and siblings in order to save his mate, Celetheal. While his mate is spared, his actions ultimately fail in the worse possible way—dooming his entire race.

    Celetheal

Celetheal

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_celetheal.jpg
She lingers in dreams and memories, the catalyst of a great and terrible choice.

Known as the Golden Song, and Daughter of Sunrise, Celetheal is a beautiful golden dragon with an uncommonly empathetic and curious nature (for a dragon). She is Aurnraulath's mate (and Laeka'Draeon's mother) and her capture by Sadukravon and subsequent release (after Aurnraulath makes a treacherous blood exchange) is the catalyst for the dragons' sudden and mysterious disappearance and the slow failing of Klonnoth Aire.

  • Beauty Equals Goodness: She is a very beautiful dragon (her beauty also translating well in her hemlan-like form) and is compassionate and caring (to a fault).
  • The Chooser of the One: While it is officially Aubrianna Mauveer who anoints Laeka'Draeon as the new Keiegn, the choice was made and passed on to the morwulf seer by Celetheal herself.
  • Curtains Match the Window: She has long golden hair and golden eyes (and golden scales when in her true form).
  • Damsel in Distress: Is lured into an ambush by Sadukravon and captured. He then uses her as the incentive (threatening torture and death) for Aurnraulath to willingly surrender an orb of his blood.

  • Good Parents: Once Laeka'Draeon is dubbed Keiegn and Fargo's ultimate message form triggers as a result, it is revealed that Celetheal is the creator of the Spirit Message, and has been using Fargo (her creation) to watch over Laeka'Draeon through his entire journey, aiding and protecting him wherever possible. It stands to reason that having to work through a magical conduit whilst also concentrating on keeping Klonnoth Aire's flow from destabilising would be extremely difficult and exhausting, and likely result in her not being able to make effective use of Fargo all of the time. Regardless, she did all she could to help her son, despite her situation, which shows deep love and devotion.
  • Held Gaze: She shares a poignant one with her mate, Aurnraulath, before he sacrifices his body to use as an energy shield to ensure her escape through the corrupted barrier enclosed over Laranen'unok (the Sacred Lands).
  • Missing Mom: She goes missing after the Second Gathering, and in a conversation with Shifra Laeka'Draeon states that one of his future goals is to find out what happened to her.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: It is Celetheal's compassion for the hobgoblin remnant, and her naive desire for comradery and companionship between the two kinds that ultimately leads to the dragons' downfall. Sadukravon exploits her empathetic nature by baiting her with a hobgoblin named Keetil, with whom she had developed a close bond. It is never explained how Sadukravon captured Keetil, but he certainly doesn't show her mercy; she is dead by the time Celetheal finds her. Celetheal is then used by the manitcor to exploit Aurnraulath's weakness.

  • Recurring Dreams: Aurnraulath's memory of her being held against her will, and the subsequent blood exchange to see her safely released is something that triggers in Laeka'Draeon's mind in the form of dreams, more than once.
  • Seeing Through Another's Eyes: Celetheal utilises Fargo as a physical lens through which she can watch Laeka’Draeon’s progression, and lend aid when she feels it necessary.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Her revealed actions and behaviour pre-Sod'minokul show her to be naive and optimistic, with a strong sense of compassion. After learning about the hobgoblin remnant, she takes it upon herself to protect them, and secretly hides them away from the world (beneath the third tower of Klonnoth Aire), with the intent to free them and advocate on their behalf once the world was righted (likely after twenty-cycle time-length required for Klonnoth Aire's to fully power-up and purge the corruption from Valdae and the Black Mountains). Unfortunately, things did not end up going according to plan ...
  • Willing Channeler: Celetheal designed Fargo especially to accommodate her desire to scry through its form in order to witness Laeka’Draeon’s journey (and pre-empt when to temporarily take control of the Message and lend clandestine assistance).

The first son of Galenvra and Rolvenshin, stern and dedicated.

The second son of Galenvra and Rolvenshin, soft-spoken and conventional.

The older siblings of Shifra Inshurima, Evarrn being the eldest and Asa the middle child. They are both proficient warriors and prestigious members of the old-blood Inshurima Clan—being direct descendants of the legendary Kiesha Velapphia, First Mother of Slayers. Evarrn followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a palace sentinel, while Asa trained to become an inner guard of the regiment assigned to the Seksai, Keeper of Secrets.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Both brothers call Shifra by an established nickname "Little Ra".
  • Big Brother Instinct: Both brothers are protective and admiring of their little sister, but Evarrn is far more forward about it; he outwardly declares it his duty to watch over Shifra.
  • Badass Family: Evarrn and Asa (as well as Shifra) are all proficient fighters (of both martial arts and weapon-wielding), having followed after their parent's warrior callings; Evarrn follows in his father's footsteps, as a royal sentinel; Asa is of the inner guard assigned to Aurbianna Mauveer (who is the third-highest ranking morwulf in K'tailiur). And Shifra, of course, began to train under her mother in the art of dragon-slaying (until the latter was taken by a Rogue).

  • Family Honor: The Inshurima Clan is one of the oldest and purest of the morwulf clans, and it's strongly implied that most of (if not all) the current living generations are sticklers for honour and tradition. Made clear in how the heirs of Aunuen react to Aubrinanna declaring Laeka'Draeon will choose who among them will wield the Aunuen. Both Evarrn and Asa object, Evarrn most especially. And it's obvious he disapproves of Shifra's alliance with Laeka'Draeon, and says that her judgement is clouded by her "previous fraternising with a dragon", implying the comradery is an offence against their family honour.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: Evarran shows signs of having this type of intense disposition.

  • Promotion to Parent: It is implied that, after their mother was taken by a Rogue dragon (causing their father to lose himself in his work), Evarrn stepped up his brotherly duties, taking on more responsibility in looking after his younger siblings.

  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Downplayed but still noticeable in how they react during the choosing of Aunuen's Heir. Evarran is outspoken and confrontational and physically makes his presence known and noted, while Asa remains reserved and unobtrusive (speaking his mind only after Shifra forces a reaction from him).
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Asa shares a lot of visual traits with Shifra—having the same fur and hair colouration. It is implied that Shifra strongly resembles her mother, which would mean Asa does as well.
  • Supernatural Martial Arts: Implied that both brothers were taught Kutokii since Shifra knows that fighting style. Them being older, they are likely more proficient than their sister.
