    Dwight Fairfield

Dwight Fairfield - A nervous leader

Voiced by: Ian Chuprun
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/storebackground_df_6.png
"We have to work as a team, I need you to survive so that I can survive!"
Dwight Fairfield always wanted to be one of the cool kids, but was neither athletic enough to join any sports team nor had grades good enough to mingle with the academics. As a result, he was a loser throughout high school and wound up in a dead-end job in adulthood. One day, his boss led everyone into the forest for a trust building exercise which turned into a drinking party. Dwight took one sip and remembered nothing else until he woke up the next day, alone and abandoned by his co-workers.

That was the last time anyone heard from Dwight Fairfield.

As a Survivor, Dwight's unique perks, Bond, Leader, and Prove Thyself, allow him to locate other Survivors and provide buffs to himself and others to complete tasks quickly. Bond reveals the auras of all Survivors within a certain radius of your location. Leader increases the speed at which Survivors within eight meters of you heal or unhook others, unlock chests, cleanse or bless totems, sabotage hooks, and open exit gates. Prove Thyself increases the speed at which you and all other Survivors within four meters of you repair generators for every Survivor within that radius.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Dwight decides to spike his moronic and abusive boss' drink in the hopes that he makes a fool of himself. Unfortunately, there's some more gruesome consequences.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Stated to be totally blind without his glasses. Though this is more Gameplay and Story Segregation, as there is no way for him to lose them.
    • This gets to the point where he was the person who accidentally summoned Pinhead into the entity realm, when losing his glasses during a chase and accidentally grabbing and solving the Lament Configuration.
  • Butt-Monkey: Poor Dwight just can't seem to get a break. He is typically the victim of whatever new Killer is being demonstrated in promotional materials, and the Killer side tutorial has him as your unwitting target dummy. Usually, if Dwight shows up in a promo or trailer, he's very likely to be maimed and killed painfully.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: The reason he ended up in the Entity's realm? He passed out from one sip of moonshine in the woods and got taken while trying to find his way out after waking up. However, this might have been the boss drugging Dwight's moonshine.
  • Cowardly Lion: Dwight is a quite nervous person but still manages to take the leadership role among the survivors and give them directions on how to stay hidden and avoid trouble as they work together to survive the trial.
  • Determinator: His character bio outright says that he is determined to stay alive. While other people may panic in the face of adversity, Dwight makes sure that he will live to see the next day.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After being mistreated by his boss, he decides to humiliate him by spiking his coffee with drugs that are supposed to make him laugh nonstop.
  • Failure Hero: The Observer remarks that it seems that Dwight's actions accomplish the opposite of his intentions, such as when he accidentally shut down his job operation even though he simply wanted to make a fool out of his abusive boss.
  • Friendless Background: A geek in high school that wanted to be one of the cool kids but usually ended up a laughingstock. His coworkers didn't particularly care for him, either, abandoning him in the woods after a team-building exercise.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: All those descriptions of him being a Ridiculously Average Guy? Well, they don't apply in-game. Dwight is ironically one of the strongest survivors with all three of his perks being perfectly viable at all skill levels.
  • Good Is Not Soft: In his updated backstory, he humiliates his Jerkass boss by spiking his coffee with drugs, as revenge for the mistreatment of his coworkers as said boss attends a meeting...
  • Gone Horribly Right: Said drugs, however, causes his boss to hallucinate and assault one of the investors attending the meeting. While this gets his boss fired, it also results in the company being shut down, leaving Dwight and his friends jobless.
  • Graceful in Their Element: A somewhat subdued example given the circumstances, but Dwight's exceedingly average nature seems to melt away to an efficient leadership role when under extreme stress, such as being hunted by a maniac.
  • Team Spirit: Dwight's perks are focused around boosting the speed of his fellow survivors' interaction skills.
  • The Leader: Dwight's perks all revolve around gathering up and leading his fellow Survivors in the trials. Bond allows him to locate his allies, while Leader gives them a significant boost to their action speeds and Prove Thyself makes repairing generators with another Survivor slightly faster.
  • The Millstone: Dwight's first perk, Bond, which allows him to know the location of all other players can be a double-edged sword to the team, as a pragmatic or simply panicked Dwight player can end up luring the Killer to other survivors during a chase to try and get it off him.
  • Only in It for the Money: The reason he took the job at Peak 22 as well as the reason he puts up with his narcissistic boss, Lazar.
  • Ridiculously Average Guy: Not very charismatic, was cut from both the football and basketball teams in high school, and his grades were distinctly below average. Even the Flavor Texts for his cosmetics and his mask for the Twisted Masquerade event Lampshade how unimpressive he is.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: His perks are pretty simple in nature, being just buffs to him and his teammates when collaborating on objectives, alongside letting him see their auras when they're nearby. However, their effects are powerful, especially with no drawbacks, letting him be a valuable asset to any team without having to compromise himself.
  • This Loser Is You: Dwight is noted to be a Ridiculously Average Guy who fails at everything he tries to do. He's both academically and athletically unimpressive; frequently lands dead-end jobs, sometimes jobs that require an undignified dress code; is made a fool of either by his peers or thanks to some embarrassing mistake on his part; and is so uncharismatic that he has no friends to hang out with, with the Flavor Text for his Mr. Elf outfit stating that he buys presents for himself.

    Meg Thomas

Meg Thomas - An energetic athlete

Voiced by: Ingrid Blemur
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/storebackground_mt_2.png
"See if you can keep up..."

Meg Thomas was someone filled with unfocused energy. She excelled at school but was off the rails, but thankfully, one of the athletics coaches taught her how to spend that energy on the track.

She eventually became a high school athlete star and graduated with a scholarship to college, but she turned it down after she heard that her mother, her only parent after her father left them when she was just a baby, fell incredibly ill in order to stay by her side and care for her.

During the summer, Meg decided to take a run through the woods. She never returned and her body was never found.

As a Survivor, Meg's unique perks Quick & Quiet, Sprint Burst and Adrenaline help her keep distance between herself and the Killer while giving her advantages during the chase. Quick & Quiet muffles the sound of any rushed actions you undertake. Sprint Burst allows you to break into a sprint on demand, letting you make a quick escape if the Killer surprises you. Adrenaline activates once the exit gate switches are powered, automatically healing you for one health state and letting you sprint for five seconds.

  • Action Girl: Her perks are athleticism-based and make her one of the better characters for direct confrontations with the Killer. Some of her cosmetic outfits show she has an impressive set of six-pack abs.
  • Braids of Action: Meg's default outfit has her hair styled with two French braids at the side of her head and a smaller one at the back of her head
  • Determinator: In "Eat Dust," Meg suffers an injury to her ankle that is orchestrated by her rival, Dana, who tries to cheat her way to victory. The coach offers to pull Dana out of the race because of this and advises Meg to exit the competition for her own good but Meg insists that Dana should still be in the race and unconvincingly lies that her ankle injury is nothing serious. Despite the strain on her ankle, Meg comes in first.
  • Final Girl: In a gameplay sense, she is the one that benefits most from being the last surviving human (though Laurie and Bill, who were added later, similarly benefit from being the last survivor standing), being much quicker on her feet.
  • Fragile Speedster: Meg, while not any more fragile than the other survivors, has perks unique to her that cause her to run faster or more silently. Might give her an edge at being the Final Girl.
  • Heroic Willpower: One perk she can gain will instantly heal her from a wounded or downed state when the exit door is opened, allowing for that last-second burst to survive.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: Rowdy and rebellious as a kid, Meg focused on running to channel her energy and eventually became a high school sports star.
  • Race Lift: Of a sort during the Alpha build cycle. Meg was originally designed as an African-American girl, whereas Claudette was initially Caucasian, before their races were swapped for the final release.
  • Refusal of the Call: Of a sort. Meg turned down a sports scholarship and gave up her chance at college to care for her ailing mother.
  • Sprint Meter: Can gain the ability to sprint at incredible speed for a short while. But it's very limited and requires some time to get her breath back afterward.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Not exactly a stealth-based maneuver, but Meg's Perk Sprint Burst allows her to make some quick getaways the moment the Killer lays eyes on her.
  • The Sneaky Guy: Meg's perk, Quick And Quiet, allows her to perform fast actions without a sound, allowing her to evade detection by the Killer. And if she does end up seen, she can quickly rush away with Sprint Burst, putting enough distance between her and them to hide until they either stop chasing her or go after someone else.
  • The Worf Effect: Of the female survivors, her, Yui and Jill are the most physically strong. The Resident Evil DLC trailer, however, shows her getting tossed into a car and passing out due to cardiac arrest at the hands of Nemesis, in order to establish his entrance into the Fog.

    Claudette Morel

Claudette Morel - A studious botanist

Voiced by: Sarah Robinson
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/storebackground_cm_8.png
"Basic botany knowledge could save your life someday."

Claudette Morel grew up with a passion for science and experiments, particularly in botany. Her eagerness in learning allowed her to earn an early scholarship for a nice college. She eventually moved out of Montreal to pursue it.

Claudette was shy and introverted, leading to online forums and chat rooms being her main form of social interaction. She eventually became well known for her botany knowledge, earning her the nickname of "Science Girl".

During a long bus ride one evening, Claudette decided to take a stroll through the woods. She soon realized she was lost and tried to find her way out. She didn't. Her friends on the forums were left to wonder just what happened to her.

As a Survivor, Claudette's unique perks Empathy, Botany Knowledge and Self-Care allow her to find injured allies and heal both them and herself more effectively. Empathy reveals the auras of any injured Survivors within a certain radius of your location. Botany Knowledge increases the speed you heal at without using a med-kit, while simultaneously reducing your efficiency while using a med-kit by 20%. Self-Care allows you to heal yourself without a med-kit, albeit at a greatly reduced speed rate.

  • Aura Vision: Her Empathy perk gives her the ability to sense injured allies within a certain range.
  • Badass Bookworm: A science student who can survive a hellish night against Ax-Crazy serial killers.
  • Black and Nerdy: She's a brilliant, glasses-wearing black girl who studies botany as a hobby.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Her bio and Tome describe Claudette as being very intelligent since an early age, but due to her lack of interest in schoolwork this didn't translate into high grades, which became a sore spot for her Education Mama.
  • Education Mama: Claudette's mother wanted her to have better grades and is upset at her struggling in school. This is in contrast to her open-minded father who accepted her differences.
  • Friendless Background: Claudette's been lonely since she can remember it, with her struggling to fit in and make friends everywhere she goes because of her social awkwardness and additional difficulties posed by her implied autism. Most of her "friends" growing up were limited to plants and insects instead of real people.
  • Healing Herb: Her Botany Knowledge perk involves creating a tincture from the plants found in the woods, allowing her to heal others faster if you aren't using a med-kit..
  • Heal Thyself: Her Self-Care perk allows her to heal herself without a healing item.
  • Meaningful Name: Her last name, Morel, is a species of edible wild mushroom.
  • The Medic: Claudette's unique perks allow her to heal others and herself more efficiently.
  • No Social Skills: Claudette's only friends were made through online chat rooms. It's heavily implied that this is because she's autistic.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Claudette's father was content to let her evolve at her own pace, unlike her mother who would rather have her be "normal".
  • Parents as People: Her mother insists that Claudette be more "normal" and hates that she doesn't have any friends. During an argument with her father, he calls her mother out for trying to make her conform, rather than accepting her for who she is.
Her mother goes silent. She suddenly releases a cry and says she doesn't want her to be bullied like she was bullied throughout school. Claudette's eyes widen. For the first time in her life... she realizes... her mother's wired differently, too.
  • Race Lift: As with Meg, Claudette also underwent this as the game became finalized for release, as she used to be Caucasian during the Alpha build.
  • The Sneaky Gal: The stealthiest survivor in the game bar none. This is very impressive because she has no stealth perk. Her small frame, blending outfits, and dark complexion are all she needs to be nigh-unspottable. Her prestige cosmetics amps this up, with the splotches of blood on her face and clothing acting as camouflage when playing on dark maps with a lot of foliage. A player who exploits this advantage is referred to as a "Blendette" by the community.

    Jake Park

Jake Park - A solitary survivalist

Voiced by: Kevin Boissonneault
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/storebackground_jp_3.png
"Hopefully this'll buy us some time."

Jake Park was born into a wealthy family, and with it, high expectations of him. These expectations caused immense pressure on Jake, especially when his brother graduated with honors from Yale. Eventually, he could not take it anymore and rebelled against his father, dropping out of school and running away to live in the nearby woods.

He did not maintain contact with his father, but he still talked to his mother every once in a while. However, Jake soon stopped showing up, and his mother called the police. They tried their hardest to find him, but alas, Jake Park's body was never recovered. Many assume that the wilderness simply got the best of him.

As a Survivor, Jake's unique perks Iron Will, Calm Spirit and Saboteur make him stealthier whilst also allowing him to disable the Killer's means of sacrificing him and his teammates. Iron Will greatly reduces the sound of your grunts of pain. Calm Spirit completely suppresses the urge to scream, lets you run freely without disturbing crows, and lets you open chests or cleanse totems silently, albeit at a greatly reduced rate. Saboteur reveals the auras of all hooks within 56 meters of a Survivor when they're picked up by the Killer, and lets you sabotage hooks without needing a toolbox.

  • Friend to All Living Things: Calm Spirit, one of his three unique perks, allows him to avoid disturbing crows entirely unless he physically touches them.
  • The Hermit: His backstory says he willingly ran away and went to live out by himself in the forest.
  • Nerves of Steel: His perk Iron Will allows him to ignore pain, making less noise when he's wounded. His other perk, Calm Spirit, also prevents him from screaming entirely.
  • Reduced to Ratburgers: When his hunts didn't bear any fruit, he'd resort to scavenging, eating carrion.
  • Riches to Rags: Intentionally. He broke away from the pressure of his parents, who wanted him to take over the family business and went to live in the wilds.
  • The Sneaky Guy: His perks encourage this playstyle- he doesn't upset crows (that subsequently alert a nearby killer with the right observation skills to your exact location) as often, he makes less noise when wounded, and he can rapidly disable nearby hooks if the killer happens to pick up a fellow survivor in his vicinity, giving the latter more time to escape their grasp.
  • The Stoner: Sort of. In his original bio, he was caught smoking weed, causing him to be expelled.
  • The Stoic: Based around staying calm in the face of danger.
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: Jake's Calm Spirit perk is considered fairly niche, as all it does is prevent you from screaming and let you run without scaring off crows...unless you're playing against the Doctor or a Killer using the Ultimate Weapon perk, in which case it hard counters one of their strongest methods of tracking you.
  • Vehicular Sabotage: His third perk, Saboteur, allows him to break hooks without the need of a toolbox while also increasing the time they spend sabotaged.

    Nea Karlsson

Nea Karlsson - An urban artist

Voiced by: Morgane Ravasi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/storebackground_nk_8.png
"The paint is still fresh but I'm long gone."

"At first sight, I thought it was a cat that passed me by, just a few meters behind me. A shadow that moved without sound. But yelling is not wise in this place. I have spotted her more times, but just in the peripheral. I still don’t know her name, but she evades the monsters with a certain grace."
Unknown

As a Survivor, Nea's unique perks Balanced Landing, Urban Evasion and Streetwise give her more ways to evade the Killer whilst increasing the lifetime of her and her team's items. Balanced Landing allows you to recover faster from falling from a height and lets you break into a sprint after landing. Urban Evasion increases your movement speed while crouched. Streetwise increases the efficiency of you and any allies within eight meters of you by decreasing the rate at which your item's charges expire.

Nea is the first new survivor added to the game with the release of the free content update The Last Breath on August 18th, 2016.

  • Animal Motifs: She's been given cat metaphors with the unknown writer mistaking her for a cat when he or she first saw her at a distance and the trailer describing her as having the balance of an alley cat. She is also described as being nimble and almost catlike. A decent chunk of her Store cosmetics also has cats on them, such as her ugly Christmas sweater.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Dresses in punk fashion, but is on the side of the survivors.
  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: She was dragged off by the Entity for tagging the Crotus Penn Asylum, where the Nurse killer was created. The rest goes downhill from there.
  • Le Parkour: Her Balanced Landing perk allows her to recover faster from high falls, making it easier for her to flee. Also, her Urban Evasion perk increases her crouching speed, letting her stay hidden while swiftly sneaking away.
  • The Sneaky Gal: Even more so than other survivors in a stealth-focused game. Her Urban Evasion perk makes the stealth easier by increasing her speed while crouching, so she can get to places more quickly while maintaining a low profile.
  • Street Smart: A skate punk and graffiti artist used to dodge police and other dangers. Exemplified by one of her unique perks, Streetwise.

    Laurie Strode

Laurie Strode - A determined survivor

Voiced by: Catherine Lecours
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/storebackground_ls.png

"I stumbled upon another soul in this doomed corner of the earth. I do not know her name, but there is something about her. I have never crossed paths with her, but she seems as if she’s been doing this for far too long. Weary of the environment, clad in a kind of controlled panic, constantly looking over her shoulder, on the lookout."
Unknown

As a Survivor, Laurie's unique perks Sole Survivor, Object of Obsession and Decisive Strike increase her chances of survival whilst increasing her chances of the Killer becoming obsessed with her. Sole Survivor creates a radius around you that blocks your aura from being read which increases in size every time another Survivor dies; when you're the last Survivor remaining, your repairing and hatch opening speeds are greatly increased. Object of Obsession reveals the Killer's aura to you whenever they reveal your aura while increasing your repairing, healing and cleansing speed while your aura is revealed. Decisive Strike gives you a second chance to free yourself from the Killer, allowing you to stab the Killer and escape their grasp if they pick you up within a certain amount of time after being unhooked.

Laurie is the second new survivor added to the game with the release of The Halloween Chapter on October 25th, 2016.

Laurie is the first Guest Fighter survivor to be added in the game, coming from Halloween.

  • Action Survivor: True to her film incarnation, she is designed to play like this.
  • Adaptation Deviation: This version of Laurie survived Halloween night, 1978, but was spirited away shortly thereafter into the realm of the Entity.
  • Adaptational Modesty: Of her two available outfits, her alternate costume has been changed from a pleated skirt and stockings in the original film to a pair of khaki capri pants. Presumably, the developers wanted to avoid an accidental Panty Shot. The regular skirt, sweater and cardigan has now been added as part of the appropriately named Wolf in Sheep's Clothing outfit.
  • Arch-Enemy: To The Shape/Michael Myers, naturally. The Obsession game mechanic is based around the Perks of her and Myers and focuses on creating a direct rivalry between them, although at higher levels other survivors and killers can unlock those Perks. Due to the continued implementation of Killers with unique Obsession Perks (The Nightmare, and The Spirit), one could argue that Laurie is the arch-enemy to all Killers. This is quite fitting, when one considers that Laurie is often regarded as horror's most iconic final girl.
  • Badass Boast: A subtle one; the flavor-text of Laurie's Perk, Decisive Strike, is a reference to the movie, but it also could indicate her heroic resolve and fearlessness.
  • Counter-Attack: Laurie's Perk, Decisive Strike, allows her a chance at instantly escaping the killer's grasp once per trial if she can successfully hit a skill-check. Doubles as a last-ditch attempt at escape if the player has saved their ticket to freedom till the very end of the match or for their last hook.
  • Damsel out of Distress: Decisive Strike, one of Laurie's signature perks, strikes the killer carrying her with a sharp object, briefly stunning her attacker and allowing her a second chance to escape.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Implemented in-game with her Tousled Low Lights cosmetic, which originally gave her darker hair, as well as a smaller, mousier face and a reduced chin. This has since been fixed, and now her model has a consistent facial structure with each cosmetic.
  • Final Girl: Her "Sole Survivor" perk revolves around this, which makes sense since she is the final girl.
  • Guest Fighter: From Halloween.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: In a game reliant on stealth, her base outfit comes with a BRIGHT BLUE shirt. Any survivor with sense wisely switches to her gray sweater.
  • Plucky Girl: She is described as a "determined survivor," and her idle animations in the game lobby show her standing rather confidently.
  • Shaped Like Itself: Each survivor gets a special title; Laurie's title is "Determined Survivor." However, this may be a means of emphasizing her status as a Final Girl.
  • Slashers Prefer Blondes: This iteration of Laurie has blonder hair than her original incarnation that can make her easier to spot; that combined with her hard-mode perks can sometimes lead to the Killer targeting her specifically to snuff her out early on in a trial.
  • Sole Survivor: Her Sole Survivor perk causes the killer's aura reading range to be reduced the more survivors are dead, with Laurie becoming immune to aura reading if she's the only survivor left while also increasing her chance to become the killer's obsession..
  • True Blue Femininity: Her default outfit is the acrylic blue shirt and bell-bottoms from the film, fittingly reflecting her legendary virgin power.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Due to licensing, Laurie's face has only a passing resemblance to Jamie Lee Curtis' likeness and has green eyes.

    Ace Visconti

Ace Visconti - A lucky gambler

Voiced by: Sebastien Varas
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/storebackground_av.png
"Paying attention is what kept me alive through the years. That, and my good looks of course."

"I have seen a poor new soul in this nightmare. For most of the others trapped here, fear is our common denominator. But this man does not appear as haunted as we are. I have seen him walking without despair; instead, I could see his alert gaze taking in his surroundings and his crooked smile as he picked up something from the ground. Just by watching him from afar, I felt as if he ignited a faint spark of hope in my heart before he disappeared into the shadows. I do not grasp why, but I do pray that good fortune stays on his side."
Unknown

Argentinan born with Italian ancestry, Ace's charms and gambling skills allowed him to go from rags to riches. That said, Ace was always loose with money, and piled on quite a few debts during his life. Eventually, he vanished without a trace when the debt collectors came for him, but nobody doubted Ace's survival against impossible odds.

As a Survivor, Ace's unique perks Open-Handed, Up The Ante and Ace in the Hole increase both his teammates' and his own aura reading capabilities and luck while also increasing the odds of finding better loot in chests. Open-Handed increases the range of you and your allies' aura reading abilities. Up the Ante increases the luck of Survivors, giving them better odds to escape the hook by themselves for every Survivor still alive. Ace in the Hole guarantees you better items from chests and lets you keep your item's add-ons if you escape the trial.

Ace is the third new survivor added to the game with the release of the Of Flesh and Mud Chapter on December 8th, 2016.

  • Born Lucky: Ace has a lot of luck which got him through in life. His perk, Up The Ante, reflects this by increasing the luck of each survivor.
  • Cool Old Guy: A charming old guy with a silver tongue.
  • The Gambler: In life, he was a gambling ace, using his luck to rack up lots of money... and lots of debt.
  • Good Luck Charm: He carries an alligator tooth which has gotten him out of tough scrapes before he was taken into the Entity's realm.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: His garish gold bathroom cosmetic has developed a reputation as one of the absolute least stealthy outfits in the game and has been a favorite among some of the more meme-seeking players of the game.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: Ace gets pummeled to a pulp by Mika James, a champion MMA fighter, in a Curbstomp Battle while all he has to do is survive getting his ass kicked for five minutes. His eye is swollen shut, his nose is broken, a rib is broken, his elbow is popped out, he loses a tooth, and he gets his ankle broken.
  • Luck Stat: Two of his perks, Ace in The Hole and Up The Ante, revolve around this. Ace in the Hole gives Ace a 50% chance that an addon will be attached to an item upon finding one in a chest and Up The Ante increases the luck of himself and any other survivors for every survivor still alive, increasing the odds of survivors escaping from bear traps or freeing themselves from hooks.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Always pulling a smug smile, even when he's on a hook or being stabbed.
  • The Quiet One: A common joke among the playerbase is that Ace has an in-built Iron Will due to his quieter pained sounds when moving around, to the point that even his screams will not be as audible as those of his fellow survivors.
  • Self-Made Man: In his backstory, Ace started out in poverty, before rising up to a successful career as a high roller through skill, cunning, and talent.
  • Silver Fox: A charming older man who can easily pass off as an aging movie star.
  • Smug Smiler: As stated above, he smiles no matter what situation he's in.
  • The Social Expert: As mentioned in a quote in his perk, Open-Handed, Ace was able to survive the world of gambling through his social skills.
  • Support Party Member: His unique Perks primarily focus on buffing the stats of the whole team, namely their Aura-reading abilities and Luck.
  • With Friends Like These...: After his "fight" with Mika, he finds out Wallace made a side bet with her that he'd survive getting his ass kicked.

    William "Bill" Overbeck

William "Bill" Overbeck - An old soldier

Voiced by: Ricardo Gomez
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/storebackground_bo.png
"I'm not horseshittin' around, I'm doing this alone!"

After two tours in Vietnam and a knee full of shrapnel, William "Bill" Overbeck was honorably discharged and forced back into living a peaceful life, which he hated. Decades of drifting through endless dead-end jobs later, Bill went to the hospital for a routine surgery, only for a nurse to go crazy and attack the doctors. Fighting through the anesthesia, Bill managed to kill the nurse and fled the hospital to head home, only to discover the world he knew was now gone. The streets were now filled with sickly pale people, under the influence of a virus that transformed them into murderous undead.

After fighting through hordes of zombies, Bill managed to get back home, grabbing his old uniform and guns before setting off to find a way to safety. As he made his way through the city, Bill managed to find three other survivors; A loud-mouthed biker named Francis, an optimistic assistant retail manager named Louis and a horror film enthusiast named Zoey. Together, they fought their way through countless numbers of mindless killing machines across the country, trying to find a safe haven.

After escaping military confinement from Millhaven and discovering the truth about their statuses as carriers, Bill decided the best option for them was to find a boat and move to a island in the Florida Keys to prevent themselves from spreading the "Green Flu" any further. They found a bridge port, powering it up to raise it to get to the sailboat they needed. However, the bridge began to lower, one of the generators had shut off and needed to be restarted. Surrounded by countless numbers of the infected, Bill knew what he had to do.

Jumping off the bridge, he fought his way back to the generator, successfully restarting it. Before he could make it back, a devastating blow from a Tank sent him flying into a nearby generator room. Bill looked up, seeing the three Tanks charging at him. Hearing his teammates scream his name from the bridge, he lit his cigarette one last time, and prepared to fight.

Though he ultimately managed to take down the Tanks with him, Bill could no longer cling to consciousness any longer, resting his eyes. But instead of the cold embrace of death, Bill woke up in a dirty shack. His teammates assumed he was dead, but they didn't know he now had the one thing he's always wanted: an enemy to fight. Forever.

As a Survivor, Bill's unique perks Left Behind, Borrowed Time and Unbreakable give him the capability to survive incredibly dire situations and increase both his teammates' and his own chances of survival. Left Behind reveals the aura of the hatch to you when you are the last Survivor alive in the trial. Borrowed Time increases the duration of an unhooked Survivor's endurance and haste effects. Unbreakable allows you to fully recover from the dying state by yourself once per trial and increases the speed at which you recover.

Bill is the fourth new survivor added to the game with the release of the free content update Left Behind on March 8th, 2017.

Bill is the second Guest Fighter survivor to be added to the game, coming from Left 4 Dead.

  • Adaptational Wimp: In his home franchise, Bill can survive mountains of punishment. From being swarmed by Zombies, set on fire, hurled by a Tank, etc. Here, while how much carnage he suffers depends on how the match goes, he's down in 2 hits like everyone else. In the canonical Left 4 Dead comic, Bill is capable of breaking a locked door open by ramming it and fighting through an entire horde of zombies while recovering from anesthesia. Here, he is incapable of fighting back in any way, shape or form even against Badass Normal killers like Amanda and Legion. Canon Bill can probably K.O Legion in one punch with the kind of raw strength he is shown to have.
  • Auto-Revive: Bill's "Unbreakable" perk lets him revive himself from the dying state once per match without needing another survivor to pick him up.
  • Back from the Dead: Not even the clutches of death itself can stop the Entity from taking someone. Death is not an escape, indeed...
  • Blood Knight: His lore implies that for Bill, unlike for the other survivors, being trapped in the Entity's Realm is less eternal Hell and more like Valhalla.
  • Cool Old Guy: A zombie-killing Vietnam veteran.
  • Determinator: Was pretty much this in Left 4 Dead, and still is in Dead by Daylight. His "Unbreakable" perk reflects this, getting up despite in excruciating pain in the dying state in order to survive.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Went this through this before ending up in the realm of the Entity. The aftermath of this was shown in his trailer.
  • A Father to His Men: Both when he was alive and after he died. This is reflected in the Borrowed Time perk, where he gives another survivor extra Endurance duration after being unhooked while placing himself in danger.
  • Final Girl: Well, Final Guy. Bill's perk, "Left Behind," shows him the location of the hatch once he becomes the last Survivor alive.
  • Guest Fighter: From Left 4 Dead.
  • Handicapped Badass: Has an injured knee, although it's not shown in-game.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • What he pulled before getting sent to the realm of the Entity. He could do this again in-game, depending on the player's choices.
    • One of his perks, Borrowed Time, encourages this; It makes it so that if you unhook another Survivor, they will be immune to being put into the dying state for an additional 10 seconds. You, however, are not given this and smarter Killers will usually go after you to prevent wasting their time on the immune Survivor.
  • Heroic Willpower: His Unbreakable perk is pretty much this as he recovers from the dying state once without assistance.
  • The Leader: He was the leader of his band of survivors in Left 4 Dead.
  • Mercy Invincibility: His "Borrowed Time" perk allows whoever he unhooks to have more time for their Endurance buff, ensuring that even if they get hit soon after being unhooked, they have a larger window to run away and hide.
  • Old Soldier: Vietnam vet and former Green Beret.
  • Smoking Is Cool: To the point, he still has his cigar despite being hit by the killer and getting the hook.
  • Team Dad: Can be this if the player decides to be a team player.
  • The Vietnam Vet: He fought in 'Nam and has the age and fucked up knee to show for it.

    Feng Min

Feng Min* - A focused competitor

"U mad?"

"A young woman surprised me the other day. She is another guest in this nightmare; I cannot seem to wake up from. She came running, passed by a wounded girl, and didn’t stop. Just a glance behind her, and she was off again. With a determined look on her face, like she had something important to do. A lone wolf maybe? I am not sure what I should call this new person."
Unknown

As a Survivor, Feng's unique perks Technician, Lithe and Alert allow her to work on Generators more effectively and gain advantages in the chase. Technician reduces the range at which repairing sounds can be heard and prevents generators from exploding when you miss a Skill Check at the cost of increasing the penalty for missed Skill Checks. Lithe causes you to break into a sprint after performing a fast vault. Alert reveals the Killer's aura to you for a short period of time whenever they break a pallet or wall or damage a generator.

Feng is the fifth new survivor added to the game with the release of the Spark of Madness chapter on May 11th, 2017.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Is one of the survivors where the question of does she know what is going on with the Fog "game" is more squarely raised. The introductory quote makes her sound monstrous - unless she, as a professional gamer, as figured out this is a kind of game to win.
  • Animal Motifs: Several of her cosmetics incorporate rabbit ears, making rabbits an informal motif.
  • Aura Vision: Alert lets her temporarily see the Killer's aura when they do a "break action" (damage generators, break pallets, destroy walls).
  • Broken Ace:
    • She tried to be the Ace, and pushed herself to her limits unhealthily. Lack of sleep and pressure to constantly be better at gaming added up until she started to slip and lose her edge.
    • She has a similar path to David King in this regard. Both of them were enrolled in university and had promising careers ahead of them, but not reining in their competitive natures led to them making big mistakes that cost them their careers. They even both end up spending a lot of time at bars and end up mysteriously never returning.
    • However, she handled this situation vastly differently from David. While she waded in her regrets of disappointing her parent and her fans, he relished the fact that he could bust more heads. Ironically, their perspectives are reversed upon being taken by the Entity as well. While Feng Min was focused on pleasing her fans and her parents in the normal world, now she's described as a lone wolf; and while David King could give a damn about anyone in the real world, now he's a team player who would take a hit for his fellow survivors.
  • Blood Knight: Similar to Bill and David King, if her description is anything to go by.
  • Competition Freak: Obsessed with becoming the best.
  • Cosplay: As a result of her gamer interests, the Chapters which released characters from video games also offer some costumes for Feng based on their characters. Specifically, she can wear Cheryl Mason's Princess Heart outfit, and she can dress up in Jill Valentine's S.T.A.R.S. uniform.
  • Gamer Chick: One of the players for a professional gaming team called "Lazer Bears."
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: She's an accomplished professional gamer, but is also deeply afraid of failure and disappointing her loved ones.
  • I Work Alone: She's explicitly stated to be a Lone Wolf in one of the developer's streams and her short description written by Benedict Baker. Her Technician perk, which decreases the range at which her repairs can be heard, only works for her and her alone, meaning it's only effective if you are repairing a generator solo.
  • My Greatest Failure: Terrified of disappointing both her parents and her fans, which led to her losing sleep and led to her eventual abduction by the Entity.
  • Plucky Girl: Although, compared to Laurie's Heroic Resolve, Feng Min radiates a sense of Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy pride.
  • Sprint Shoes: Lithe gives her a speed boost after vaulting a window, letting her put some distance between her and the Killer.

    David King

David King - A rugged scrapper

"Come on then, let's 'ave it! I don't give a shit pal."

"Another man. In this arena, I guess I could start to label as “home.” A man with an athletic frame. He carries an impressive stature. He seems untouchable at first glance. But a second look tells me something else. He seems torn. Distraught and broken. Maybe not by body, but by the mind. I have seen him outrun the creatures. But also on a hook, with his bowels fleeing his torso. Something unsettling about that sight."
Unknown

As a Survivor, David's unique perks We're Gonna Live Forever, Dead Hard and No Mither give him a more difficult but more rewarding playstyle, reducing how many hits he can take but allowing him to dodge attacks and give allies he gets up from the dying state a better chance. We're Gonna Live Forever rewards altruism, allowing you to heal dying Survivors 100% faster and giving them endurance if you've unhooked others or taken protection hits. Dead Hard grants you half a second of endurance on demand while running, potentially saving you from a fatal blow. No Mither causes you to start the trial permanently injured, but completely hides your pools of blood, muffles your grunts of pain, and allows you to fully recover from the dying state for as long as the trial lasts.

David is the sixth new survivor added to the game with the release of the free chapter A Lullaby for the Dark on July 27th, 2017.

  • Abusive Parents: The Archives reveal that David's father was abusive and struck his mother. One time, he intervened and beat him up before he could strike her again but was kicked out.
  • The Ace: In life, he was noted to have excelled in academics as well as athletics. His biggest flaws were his temper and his recklessness.
  • Achilles' Heel: His No Mither Perk becomes a serious weakness if the Killer has the Thanatophobia perk. Because using No Mither means David can't heal, everyone suffers a debuff to all their interaction speeds.
  • Anti-Hero: He is one of the least heroic survivors along with Yun-jin since he has committed some morally ambiguous acts by getting involved as a "debt collector", taking part in fight clubs and assaulting a referee during rugby. Not only that but he's been described as an "asshole" by Mathieu Côté;. However, his "We're Gonna Live Forever" perk is a primary example of his altruism (See Taking the Bullet).
  • Asshole Victim: Out of all the survivors on the roster, he's seen as the most deserving of this fate, and nobody cared when he went missing. Or rather, they weren't surprised that he disappeared.
  • Auto-Revive: Similar to Bill, he has a perk that lets him revive from the downed state without needing the help of another survivor. Unlike Bill's, it can be used an infinite number of times instead of just once per match. The trade-off is that it turns him into a One-Hit-Point Wonder.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Of a sort, in David's Archive entries it details how his friend Donnie was the only real person he could consider a genuine friend as they were friends before David's wealth was known, within the entries they further mention how David misses heart to hearts. When Donnie is taken away to be beaten for owing money, David intervenes and brutalizes his attackers with the leader of the gang offering to end Donnie's debt if David works for him, to which David agrees.
  • Being Good Sucks: Downplayed as he wasn't exactly a saint to begin with. One of his few redemptive traits is that he's loyal to his friends and family, as shown by how he protected his mother from his own father. For the act of defending his mother, David's father kicked him out and cut him off from the family's wealth. Once he lost his income, his friends abandoned him because they only hung out with him because of his money. His ex was the only one to be honest with him by calling him a "shithead" and saying she wants nothing to do with him.
  • Blood Knight: Fighting is one of his hobbies and he revels in bare-knuckle boxing. His backstory reveals that his passion for fighting is a result of constantly watching his mother being beaten by his father and being unable to stop it. One night David lost his temper and defended his mother by beating his father to a pulp, but his father got the last laugh by causing David's life to go down the drain via cutting him off the family's wealth.
    • His perks reflect this, as while he still won't be able to take a Killer on in a straight fight, it allows for a more aggressive, proactive playstyle, letting him dive in and take blows aimed for his friends, constantly get back up from dying as long as he isn't hooked, and be less noisy and trackable at the cost of being always injured.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy:
    • Has shades of this. He excelled both academically and physically, letting him become a highly praised young rugby athlete. However, because he always had his family's money to fall back on, he never took anything seriously, and didn't care in the least when he let his temper fly off the handle and assaulted a ref.
    • The flavor text of the No Mither perk describes this in his own words: "I lost it. Just lamped him one. They went and banned me didn't they. Went t'pub afterwards, had a few pints and moved on to the next chapter. I couldn't be mithered with it all anyway, you know what I mean? Can't be arsed."
  • Bully Hunter: One of the Tomes describes him as this when he was younger. He is still ready to face the killers to protect his new friends, although here it is less effective.
  • Butt-Monkey: In every preview for the game, David is always the victim. In the trailer for "Darkness Among Us", he's stabbed to death by Frank from The Legion. In "A Binding of Kin" and "Devotion", he's attacked by Victor (and, in the first instance, also killed by Charlotte).
  • Closet Gay: Tome 11, Devotion, reveals that he's a gay man concealing his sexuality because he thinks it conflicts with his reputation of a macho fighter.
  • Death or Glory Attack: Sorta. Dead Hard lets him tank a blow and get a Deep Wound instead of going down, but it has to be timed perfectly, or else he'll just be hit normally. On top of that, it only works if he's injured, so if he misses the timing, down he goes.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: His perks, in general, are based around a confrontational, high risk, high skill gameplay. His We're Gonna Live Forever perk gives him Tokens for taking hits for other survivors that he can use to give other Survivors he heals from the dying state Endurance, his Dead Hard perk lets him deflect a hit, but it has to be activated just as the killer swings at him (it also only works when he's injured, so if you miss with it you're going down) and his No Mither perk reduces many of the drawbacks of being injured and lets him Auto-Revive infinitely, but also turns him into a One-Hit-Point Wonder.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: When using No Mither, he starts the game with an injury that will never be healed. When playing as David, you're encouraged to sacrifice yourself for other players in order to generate tokens for his We're Gonna Live Forever perk. But if you choose not to, matches become tense and nerve wrecking.
  • The Dreaded: David's combative nature made him a loose cannon that nobody dares to fight. Since David is too feared to fight, he couldn't get any money from fights.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: He had to endure seeing his mother getting abused by his father for a long time, and he finally snapped when the latter was about to strike her, delivering a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown for all the bottled-up anger he otherwise took out on his opponents.
  • Evil Debt Collector: He was a debt collector before landing in the Entity's realm. The Flavor Text for his bloodied "Debt Collector" outfit reveals he broke the orbital bone of the first man on his list, which the story portrays as drastic for £500.
  • Fight Clubbing: His main source of income aside from debt collecting was prize fighting, but soon after David went through all the competition, and no one would dare challenge him, effectively drying up this venue.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: David never had any real friends, only an entourage who happily followed him wherever his credit card took them, and when he's cut off from the family and asks for a place to live, they all make up excuses whereas his ex is the only one who is honest; she simply doesn't want anything to do with him anymore because she thinks he's a "shithead". When he is taken to the Entity's realm, none of his few remaining friends were concerned and simply believed that he got into a fight with someone stronger than him.
  • Handicapped Badass: His "No Mither" perk has him begin the match with an injury and he can't be fully healed. The only benefits to this are that he won't generate bloodpools, he makes less noise and he can get up from a dying state in an infinite amount of times.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Much of David's motivation comes from the desire to protect those who can't protect themselves, like his mother or his friends, unfortunately, this has led to him becoming just as bad as the people he fights. As people in his lore note, even though deep down he isn't a bad person, David was too far down to be fixed.
  • Hot-Blooded: David has a temper and his lifetime ban from rugby was a result of assaulting the referee in a fit of anger.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's described as the kind of guy you'd want to see on a hook, but he is also altruistic and loyal. His perks also revolve around an altruistic yet confrontational playstyle.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: He inherited his father's anger issues but he chooses to be loyal to his friends than be as abusive as his father.
  • Manly Gay: David is big, well-built, has a deep masculine voice, and is revealed to be gay in Tome 11: Devotion, though he hides it.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Despite being one of the most physically imposing survivors with a history of participating in fight clubs, David is unable to fight back against the Killers even against Killers like Legion and Amanda.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Many of David’s outfits emphasise his muscled appearance, namely his shirtless cosmetic.
  • One-Hit-Point Wonder:
    • His unique perk "No Mither" does this, putting David permanently in the injured state, meaning that a single hit will down him no matter what. However, it cancels out most of the negative effects of the injured state (blood-trails and groaning) and allows him to Auto-Revive an infinite number of times as long as the Killer doesn't pick him up and hook him.
    • He can benefit from injury-based perks, such as "Resilience" and "This is Not Happening", as well. Meaning that he can potentially have a 9% increase to the speed of many actions and a 30% increased Great Skill Check size while using No Mither. Picking up David Tapp's "Tenacity" perk would allow him to move while recovering in a downed state also, and with No Mither he can get right back up after. One Hitpoint Wonder indeed.
  • One-Steve Limit: Zig-zagged. While he's not the only survivor with the name David, Detective Tapp isn't generally referred to by his given name in-game, likely to minimize confusion between the two.
  • The Power of Hate: One of the reasons David was such a good scrapper is because he imagined himself beating the crap out of his abusive father, taking out his anger on his opponents rather than standing up to him out of fear of being cut out. Once he's had enough and actually does give him a long contained No-Holds-Barred Beatdown, he's thoroughly beaten in his next scrap, no longer seeing his father's face but his opponent's actual face. In spite of his previous defeat, David does manage to curbstomp the fighter who previously defeated him and a bunch of other crooks who ganged up on him in round 2.
  • Rich Bastard: King never realized how his friends actually thought of him until he lost all his money. After that, all his friends made excuses to avoid him and cut him out of their lives. His ex was the only one to be truly honest with him by calling him a "shit head". Donnie was the only one who King could consider a true friend and admits that he misses having heart-to-heart conversations with him.
  • Riches to Rags: He was born into a wealthy family and had a promising career as a professional rugby player. But, he threw it all away because of his combative nature and anger issues. The problem escalated when he was cut off from the family for defending his mother from the father's wrath. He has difficulties breaking his reckless spending habits, with his account slowly running out, and he can no longer get any cash from scraps as no one dares challenge him anymore.
  • Rugged Scar: Gains one over his eye in his Battle Mullet customization option.
  • Stock British Phrases: His perk descriptions involve British slang.
  • Super-Toughness: Downplayed. While he can be downed and hooked just like anyone else, his perks let him narrowly deflect an attack with the right timing and let him get up from the dying state infinitely, so long as he's allowed to. With luck, David will be able to constantly get up from dying without help again and again, refusing to expire until the Killer forces him to.
  • Taking the Bullet: David's playstyle is designed to encourage players to put themselves in danger for their teammates. You gain more points for saving and healing allies. But, you are permanently injured and can never be fully healed.
  • Tattooed Crook: He has a small tattoo of a rose behind his left ear and another of a lion on the inside of his left arm, and as a violent scrapper and former playboy, he's rather crooked.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: His playstyle revolves around self-sacrifice and protecting teammates. A playstyle that doesn't correlate with his backstory at face value; but the Archives reveal that, despite his violent, brash nature, he holds his true friends in the highest regard, willing to take on a whole gang of thugs, including a massive man who had previously knocked him out. It seems that, however he got to the Entity's Realm, he found this level of loyalty for the other survivors too.
  • Treachery Is a Special Kind of Evil: David is a lot of things but a traitor isn't one of them. David is loyal to his friends and even stepped in to free his friend from debt. His "betrayal" was when he assaulted his abusive father to defend his mother during one of his attacks, which caused David's father to cut him out of the family's wealth. This eventually caused David's friends to abandon him because he never moderated his spending habits afterwards and was too intimidating to fight.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Has an outfit of when he was a bare-knuckle fighter, showing off his muscles, which has spawned an official body pillow on the Dead by Daylight merch store.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: Of a sort. His perk, No Mither, starts the match with him injured immediately and he cannot be healed back to the Healthy state. However, he will not generate bloodpools around him, make less noise and gives him the ability to get himself up from the dying state an infinite amount of times.

    Quentin Smith

Quentin Smith - A resolute dreamwalker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/quentinstore.png
"We were wrong. He's not after us because we lied. He's after us because we told the truth."
Voiced by: Louis McLean

"I saw a young man the other day. He seemed both awake and asleep at the same time. A bit drowsy, but determined. Even though I lacked to see anyone or anything going after him, he would not stop. I have witnessed true fear many times at this place. But this man provides a whole new spectra of fear. What would make a man too afraid to even stop to take a breathe? He seems determined to reach the gates. I too had that urge once. But I failed too many times to reach them, too many mistakes and deaths. But this young man is different. Maybe he will actually escape. For real. But he looks tired, so intensely tired."
Unknown

As a Survivor, Quentin's unique perks Wake Up!, Pharmacy and Vigil allow him to help out his fellow Survivors with locating exit gates and decreasing their debuffs. Wake Up! reveals the auras of exit gate switches within 128 meters, shows your aura to other Survivors while you're opening a gate, and increases your opening speed by up to 25%. Pharmacy lets you unlock chests faster while you're injured and guarantees that you'll find a rare med-kit. Vigil allows you and your allies to recover from negative status effects up to 35% faster.

Quentin Smith is the seventh new survivor added to the game with the release of the A Nightmare on Elm Street Chapter on October 26th, 2017.

Quentin is the third Guest Fighter survivor added to the game, coming from A Nightmare on Elm Street.

  • All-Loving Hero: A kind and heroic young man who'll do everything he can to help Nancy defeat Freddy Krueger. After getting trapped to the realm of The Entity, he extends this kindness to the other survivors, vowing to help them in the dark and cold realm they spirited away to.
  • Ambiguously Christian: Carrying over from the movie, he wears a cross and the Sacred Heart coin. His perk Vigil also provides faster recovery from status debuffs to his teammates.
  • Arch-Enemy: Sworn enemy to Krueger.
  • Determinator: Will never give up his fight against Freddy Krueger.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: You would have these if you were up against a dream demon who can kill you in your sleep.
  • Gonk: Game!Quentin's character model on launch was...curiously scuffed, compared to his film incarnation, to the point that his Gonk-ness has become something of a meme among the fandom. He has since received a graphical update, but Kyle Gallner he is not. In fact, Gallner himself was aware of his character's "goblin" face, which was the catalyst behind Quentin's overhaul in Patch 5.1.0.
  • Guest Fighter: From the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Attempted this to take down Freddy with him to protect Nancy. This is what ultimately sends him and Freddy to the Realm of the Entity.
  • It's Personal: He and Krueger's conflict comes from their interconnected past, and Krueger's obsession with his girlfriend.
  • The Insomniac: Understandable given that he's going up against Freddy Krueger.
  • Last Ditch Move: After being cornered by Freddy Krueger, Quentin used the last of his strength and will-power to try dreaming Freddy Krueger away. It ends up attracting The Entity who took both him and Krueger into its realm.
  • The Medic: Two of Quentin's perks revolve around healing others and decreasing their recovery time from debuffs.
  • Messy Hair: Has a bad case of bedhead.
  • Nice Guy: Quentin is good-hearted and selfless that will do what he can to encourage others through the nightmares. His quote in the Vigil perk best express this.
  • Support Party Member: His "Wake Up!" perk shows his fellow teammates his aura when opening a gate, allowing them to find the exits and his "Vigil" perk reduces the amount of time nearby teammates are affected by certain debuffs and status effects.

    Detective David Tapp

Detective David Tapp - An obsessed detective

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/storebackground_fs.png
"What the hell is this? I'm taking this bastard down!"
Voiced by: Dave Blake

"I am not a stranger to law enforcement professionals. I have learned to…spot them. To recognize their posture and sway. Now, one seems to inhabit this, my new home. He looks worn down, but just like me, he refuses to simply lay down and await the coming pain and death. The struggle is the only thing that keeps him sane – something to focus on. Just as you can recognize the hardship of a law enforcer, many times you can also spot a man that has experienced what others never come near. Beatings and violence, determination. Maybe this new man seeks justice? Maybe he still carries a badge? Whatever might he be looking for here, at this place that lacks justice or an end?"
Unknown

The former lead detective on the case of the Jigsaw Killer. Tapp had the killer cornered but he managed to escape, which resulted in Tapp getting his throat slashed, and his partner, Steven Sing, killed by one of the many traps the killer designed. The reckless, warrantless confrontation would see Tapp discharged from the police force, but this didn't stop him from continuing his obsessive hunt for Jigsaw. After an obsessive stakeout of Lawrence Gordon, he found himself in a confrontation with a new suspect, and their confrontation ended with Tapp taking a bullet to the chest.

Resigning himself to his fate, and with guilt over his inability to catch Jigsaw, he lay there bleeding out, until he was taken to the Entity's realm. Once again filled with purpose, Tapp set out, ready to confront the killers lurking in the realm.

As a Survivor, Tapp's unique perks Tenacity, Detective's Hunch and Stake Out give him a more objective-based playstyle, rewarding him for completing objectives and successfully avoiding the Killer. Tenacity increases how quickly you crawl while in the dying state, reduces your grunts of pain while downed, and lets you crawl and recover at the same time. Detective's Hunch activates after a generator is completed, temporarily revealing the auras of chests, totems, and generators to you. Stake Out grants you tokens for hiding within the terror radius without being chased, which can then be used to turn good Skill Checks into great ones while healing or repairing.

Tapp is the eighth new survivor added to the game with the release of the The Saw Chapter on January 23rd 2018.

Tapp is the fourth Guest Fighter survivor to be added in the game, coming from Saw.

  • Alternate Continuity: The background of Tapp is lifted from the first Saw movie, disregarding the two Saw games where Tapp had survived his gunshot and was forced to play a game of his own.
  • Arch-Enemy: John Kramer, the original Jigsaw killer, is this to Tapp. Ironically, he has absolutely no animosity toward Amanda Young, the villain representing Saw in the game proper, as Tapp last saw her as a victim of Jigsaw before his death.
  • Armor Is Useless: His bulletproof vest does nothing to shake off the blades and claws of the Killers. Then again, real life bulletproof vest is also useless against blades.
  • Back from the Dead: Resurrected by the Entity to play in its game after he was killed by Zep.
  • Composite Character: Some of his cosmetics seem to be inspired by two other Saw protagonists after him, those being Daniel Rigg and Keith Hunt. His default outfit shares a striking resemblance to the latter two's uniforms, and his "Undercover Cop" outfit resembles one Rigg wore during his game in Saw IV. His default outfit is based upon that of Defective Eric Matthews from Saw II.
  • Cowboy Cop: Before being pulled into the Entity’s dimension, Tapp didn’t care much for police protocol and was prone to risk-taking. This ultimately got him discharged.
  • Determinator: His Tenacity perk is a prime example of his determination, allowing him to crawl faster in the dying state and recover whilst doing so. He was also very determined to solve the Jigsaw Killer case.
  • Enemy-Detecting Radar: Stake Out grants you tokens for as long as you linger in the Killer's terror radius, which gives it some helpful utility in determining your distance from them if you're not practiced at using the game audio to do so.
  • Guest Fighter: From Saw.
  • Last-Name Basis: Presumably to set him apart from David King.
  • My Greatest Failure: It's said that as he was bleeding out from Zep's gunshot, he was overwhelmed with feelings of guilt for having come so close to supposedly stopping Jigsaw and tragically failing.
  • Older Than He Looks: Despite being in his mid-to-late fifties in the film, he doesn’t look much older than thirty in-game, on account of not remotely resembling Danny Glover.
  • One-Steve Limit: The first to break it. Shares his first name with David King. This is probably the reason he is only referred to in-game as just Detective Tapp in order to avoid confusion.
  • Rugged Scar: Has a small one on his neck from when Jigsaw slashed his throat.
  • Scary Black Man: A hardened former cop who will never give up. Too bad he's against supernatural killers, so his muscle can do little.
  • Turn in Your Badge: Was discharged from the force after he and Stephen raided Jigsaw's lair on their own with horrible consequences.
  • You Don't Look Like You: As expected from most licensed survivors in the game, he doesn't look much like Danny Glover, but Tapp down to his outfit doesn't resemble his canon counterpart. In Saw, when he is shot and killed by Zep (which, in this Alternate Continuity, is the exact moment the Entity takes him away), he is wearing civvies. In this game, his default outfit is Eric Matthew’s raid gear-a bulletproof vest, dress shirt and police badge.

    Kate Denson

Kate Denson - A hopeful songbird

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/storebackground_gs.png
"Buck and Wild/swing to be free/Your hands just can't keep ahold of me."

"A ray of sunshine illuminated this cold and gray place - a ray in the form of a woman. I heard her before I saw her, a voice, more beautiful than I had encountered in some time, came drifting through the trees. While a lament might have been more suited to this sepulchral locale, she sang a song of joy, of hope and family. Her warm smile greeted any that joined her at the campfire and, just for moment, they were able to forget which realm they inhabited. As quick as she was to make friends, I got the feeling that to cross her would be a mistake. To remain so positive and upbeat in such a place would require a will of iron. Perhaps less a ray of sunshine then, but a bolt of lightning? Brilliant light and great power that could split the world in two.."
Unknown

As a Survivor, Kate's unique perks Windows of Opportunity, Dance with Me and Boil Over allow her to plan out where to head in case of a chase and make her harder to both keep track of and keep a grip on. Windows of Opportunity reveals the auras of all pallets, vault locations, and breakable walls within a certain radius of your location. Dance With Me hides your scratch marks for three seconds after performing a fast vault or quickly hiding in a locker. Boil Over increases the effects of your struggling on a Killer, hides the auras of hooks, and grants a tremendous amount of progress to your struggle meter if you fall from a height while being carried.

Kate is the ninth new survivor added to the game with the release of the The Curtain Call Chapter on June 12th, 2018.

  • Action Survivor: In the same vein as Laurie Strode, but with a different feel. Like Laurie's Decisive Strike, Kate's perk Boil Over allows her to escape the killers grasp more effectively, but it only makes her more efficient at the escape. Boil Over is a passive, rather than an active skill check, but it also hides nearby hooks from killers. The rest of her kit focuses on avoiding the killer through speed and agility rather than through stealth. Windows of Opportunity allows her to see windows and pallets within a certain distance, allowing her to plan her escapes and chases more effectively, and Dance with Me removes her scratch marks for 3 seconds after vaulting a window, making it harder for a Killer to follow her should they lose sight of her when she vaults.
  • All-Loving Hero: Her backstory shows her as a pure-hearted country singer who was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.
  • Arch-Enemy: Her ability to entertain and instill hope in the other survivors and Benedict Baker puts her at odds against The Entity itself. Her skills also improve her chances of surviving the maps and escaping the killers. However, this could be what The Entity wants, her ability to instill hope also fattens the survivors for The Entity's feeding.
  • Final Girl: She's themed around this. She has a pure heart and has abilities that allow her to navigate through the maps as well as escape from the killer's grasp. Her white top in promos also gives virginity vibes when compared to the likes of David King and Nea Karlsson.
  • Fire of Comfort: During the The Curtain Call Chapter trailer, this is where Kate was relaxing before The Clown ambushes her.
  • Friend to All Children: She entertains the children in her hometown.
  • Hope Bringer: She uses her music to help the community, support those in need and tell stories to the local children.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: She's a kind-hearted singer who never let her fame get the better of her as she made frequent trips to her hometown to entertain and support the community, as well as visit her family. This is also why the entity abducted her, seeing her as the ripest fruit to feed on.
  • Light Is Good: Wears light colors and is the friendliest survivor.
  • Nature Adores a Virgin: She's been described as having a love of nature and is in tune with nature. She respects nature and nature provides her with inspiration for her music. She's also one the nicest and most altruistic of the survivors.
  • Nice Girl: She seems to be one of the nicest survivors on the roster due to her devotion towards the community.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: She's basically Taylor Swift from her country days. Her backstory even has her being from Pennsylvania (Swift was born in Reading and raised in Wyoming) before moving to Nashville.
  • Plucky Girl: Gives of the impression with her never ending optimism and her bravery in facing the killers the Entity throws at her.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Before she was abducted by the entity, she was a kindhearted musician who was known for her altruism.
  • Walking the Earth: What she was doing before she was taken, spreading her music around to make others happy.
  • Wearing a Flag on Your Head: One of Kate's cosmetics allows her to wear a shirt with an American flag on it.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Benedict Baker speculates that The Entity feeds on hope, which is provided to the other survivors by Kate.

    Adam Francis

Adam Francis - A resourceful teacher

"There's no limit to what you can achieve, as long as you back it up with hard work."

After his father died in a car accident when he was two, Adam Francis' strict yet fair uncle took him in, teaching him to value his education. Later in life, Adam discovered the published works of his father, leading to him forming a passion of literature in spite of Kingston College's campus' focus on athletics. Bullies thought he was the perfect prey, but he made up for his lack of athletics in grit, defending himself against the odds.

As the years went by, Adam imagined a different life for himself, a life that was called for by granted admission to higher education and the demand for more teachers abroad. After graduating, he taught extra classes to afford application fees overseas and after a year, he secured a position and soon flew off to Southern Japan for a new start. However, there were bumps. Once Adam arrived, he realized that his Japanese was elementary level at best, and that he needed to learn Japanese notions.

It took a few months, but Adam soon found his rhythm and settled into Kagoshima just fine. He began to form connections and bonds to his students, and spent his weekends at numerous luxurious restaurants. He even began planning his first ever vacation as he took a train to work... And then, the train began to tremble, before flipping upside down. He landed on a window as bags and passengers flew around him, then spotted a falling door plummeting straight towards another passenger. Thinking quickly, he rolled over, ensuring the door would hit him instead as he braced... and nothing happened. Opening his eyes, he saw a thick fog flooding the train, and soon he could not keep conscious.

In the aftermath of the crash, Adam's body wasn't found, but his bag was recovered from the wreckage. His students and fellow teachers assumed the worst, but his uncle held a high belief that Adam was still alive, that he had just taken off after the crash and is still out there.... somewhere...

As a Survivor, Adam's unique perks Diversion, Deliverance and Autodidact allow him to trick the Killer and reward him for helping out his teammates. Diversion allows you to throw a pebble after hiding within the Killer's terror radius for a certain amount of time, creating a fake loud noise notification and fake scratch marks at a distance. Deliverance grants you a guaranteed self-unhook if you unhook another Survivor first. Autodidact initially applies a penalty to passing Skill Checks while healing, but increases the bonus for them for every Skill Check you complete.

Adam Francis is the tenth new survivor added to the game with the release of the Shattered Bloodline Chapter on September 18th, 2018.

  • Badass Bookworm: A bookish teacher who used to fight off bullies and is capable of outsmarting and surviving supernaturally powerful killers.
  • Badass Longcoat: Wears a badass trenchcoat that nicely averts No Flow in CGI in his default outfit.
  • Cool Teacher: Was a beloved teacher to his students and fellow co-workers, many of whom were distraught when they thought he died from a train accident.
  • Guile Hero: Diversion lets him distract the Killer by throwing a rock in a direction, creating a noise notification. Used well, it can disrupt a Killer's concentration and make them waste time on nonexistent noises while Adam and friends do what they need to.
  • Had to Be Sharp: Adam, during his time as a foreign-exchange teacher, needed to be sharp to make a stable career in a completely different land. This sharpness is demonstrated in his Diversion perk.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Placed himself in the way of a falling train door to protect someone during the crash that took him to the Entity's realm.
  • Negate Your Own Sacrifice: Adam's unique perk, Deliverance, allows him to unhook himself on his first hook if he rescued another survivor before.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Adam willingly risking his own life to protect a girl during a freak train accident results in him getting trapped in the Entity's realm for his efforts.
  • Parental Abandonment: His father died when he was young, and no mention is made of his mother. He was raised by his uncle instead.
  • Taught by Experience: He learned Japanese by living in the country and observing its language and customs. His perk Autodidact reflects this, giving him bonuses to healing survivors the more Skill Checks he passes.
  • Throwing the Distraction: One of his unique perks Diversion lets him throw a pebble, creating a loud noise notification for the Killer.
  • Useless Useful Skill: His unique perk Autodidact allows him to gain stacking bonuses to hitting Good skill checks while healing his fellow survivors, up to a 75% buff at maximum, meaning actually nailing one at max stacks can result in half a bar's worth of progress. However, while Autodidact is equipped, he cannot make Great skill checks, and Good ones suffer from a 25% progression penalty by default, meaning he heals for far less to start with, and has to gradually earn stacks by healing somebody else to ramp it up, making it incredibly fiddly to utilize in actual gameplay. To make things worse, Autodidact does not apply to Med-kit heals, meaning he has to be mending somebody by hand for it to trigger.

    Jeffrey "Jeff" Johansen

Jeffrey "Jeff" Johansen - A quiet artist

"...bravery can conceal your flaws, even when you are at your most vulnerable"

Born and raised in Ormond, Alberta, Jeff Johansen was a quiet, only child growing up. His anxiousness was assumed to simply be shyness, which he covered up with a tough persona that scared bullies, as well as teachers. He soon discovered a love for heavy metal, which helped distract him from his parents' constant arguments and fights. To further escape the situation at home, Jeff got a job at a video store. The shop did not have many customers, which gave him plenty of time to draw in his sketchbook.

Soon, one of those customers noticed and asked him if he would be willing to draw a mural for him in exchange for some money. Jeff accepted, heading down to an abandoned lodge to paint a giant mural which said only two words: "The Legion". The man gave him 50 dollars and a pack of cigarettes for his work. Jeff had completed his first commission. A fact he took pride in. However, the fighting between his parents escalated, leading to a divorce. Jeff was forced to go with his mother, moving away to Winkler, Manitoba. Miles away from his hometown and father.

Jeff became more isolated than before, but his collection of metal music and his drawing helped him cope. After graduating high school, he started working at a local bar, performing live music performances. He left Winkler shortly after, finding a job as a roadie for a band. Years later, Jeff got into a fight at a concert, resulting in him getting injured, leaving a scar around his eye. He was told to stay away from town so that his doctor could monitor him and prevent him from losing sight in his eye.

During this time, Jeff thought about his choices in life. He soon went back to college, rolling into art school. He took multiple types of mediums before eventually settling on oil painting and digital art. Taking up a desk job, he designed labels for microbreweries, a job Jeff was happy with. Jeff lived a fairly simple life from then on out, designing tattoos and freelance album covers for bands he liked, taking in a rescue dog and brewing beer. But one morning, he got a phone call; His father had passed away, and he left a few things for him back in Ormond.

He drove back to his father's home, where he found a guitar case sitting beside the wall. Inside, a black vintage model with a sticky note attached: "For my boy." Jeff stayed in town for a bit longer after that, soon remembering that mural he painted all that time ago. Fueled by nostalgia, he headed up to that old, abandoned lodge. When he didn't come back, his friends came to the conclusion that the grief had gotten to him, and eventually moved on. His dog was eventually put back on the streets after his neighbor became fed up with taking care of it, becoming a stray yet again that endlessly searched for its lost owner.

As a Survivor, Jeff's unique perks Breakdown, Aftercare and Distortion increase his aura reading capabilities and give more ways to remain hidden. Breakdown activates after you're unhooked by any means, temporarily disabling the hook and revealing the Killer's aura for a short period of time. Aftercare allows you to see the auras of Survivors who you heal or unhook and vice versa. Distortion consumes tokens to block the Killer from reading your aura and prevent you from leaving Scratch Marks, which you can recharge by hiding in the terror radius.

Jeff is the eleventh new survivor added to the game with the release of the Darkness Among Us Chapter on December 11th, 2018.

  • Aura Vision: His perks all involve aura reading in one way or another. Breakdown allows him to see the Killer's aura every time he's unhooked, Aftercare allows him and other Suvivors' to see each other's auras after he helps them out (and vice versa) and Distortion prevents the Killer from seeing his aura a maximum of four times.
  • Awful Wedded Life: His parents used to fight a lot until they finally divorced while he was in high school. He was forced to live away from his father and when his father died, he left him a guitar. Showing that his father did love him, despite the constant arguments.
  • Back to School: He initially left home and bounced between jobs. After getting injured in a fight, he reevaluated his life choices and decided to go back to college, where he settled with oil painting and digital art.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: A big and tall metalhead, with an intimidating beard, but he's one of the Survivors and his demeanor is also anything but, being a quiet artist who adopted a stray with only one mention of him getting into a fight that nearly cost him his eye.
  • Everyone Went to School Together: Jeff's backstory shows that he knew Frank and the Legion before the events of the game. You can even see the mural Jeff painted for them in the Ormond Ski Resort level, and some of his sketch books are used as addons for the Legion's power.
  • Gentle Giant: Jeff's a pretty quiet and somewhat introverted graphic designer despite first impressions whose perks mainly revolve around masking his presence around the killers. In fact, only one of his perks takes advantage of his big and tall stature.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Of a sort. The description of his "Titan of Fire" cosmetic set details an incident where Jeff leaped into the crowd of a concert he was playing at to save someone from being trampled, causing him to be severely injured and forced to deal with crippling back pain for months.
  • Metalhead: Stated to be a fan of metal and would design his own logos for bands. According to one of his cosmetics, he is particularly a fan of Black Metal.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted, he shares his first name with The Clown's adopted pseudonym, "Jeffrey Hawk".
  • Rugged Scar: Has scars over his eye from a fight that nearly caused him to lose his sight.
  • The Sneaky Guy: His perks interfere with Killer aura reading, while also sabotaging hooks that he's unhooked from for longer, hampering attempts to re-hook him. On top of this, he's able to coordinate with his allies and keep an eye on them whenever they heal each other, so that he can react in case the Killer's about to strike.
  • So Much for Stealth: Being a huge guy does Jeff absolutely no favors when sneaking around, as his large profile makes him very easy to spot on some maps, despite his dark clothing and hair giving him good camouflage. Also not helping his case are his very loud groaning and grunts of pain, which can be heard from a good distance away.
  • Stealthy Colossus: His personal perks give him ways to avoid being detected by the Killer, despite the fact that he's quite a large fellow.
