aka: Date A Live1st To5th Spirits

Go To

Spoilers for all works prior to the end of Volume 11 are left unmarked.

Spirits (精霊 Seirei) are extraordinary beings from a different dimension. Through their own will or not, it is unknown, but each time they come through to this world, they create a spacequake that is similar to a bomb explosion which destroys everything that it engulfs. Each individual Spirit is unique in personality, power, and their knowledge of the world.

This is where Shido Itsuka, the main protagonist, comes in. He possesses a strange power that allows him to seal the powers of a Spirit in his body with a kiss.

The Spirits (In order of appearance)

    General
  • Action Girl: They're all girls, and every single one of them can kick copious amounts of ass. At least, until Shido reveals he can borrow their powers.
  • The Ageless: Spirits' bodies don't age, though the process resumes if they're sealed.
  • Badass Adorable: They're all cute girls with superpowers, and the weakest of them is more than a match for any number of superhumans (not counting Ellen).
  • Badass Crew: Volume 9 has Shido's harem work together to destroy two satellites falling on the city. They do it again to save him in Volume 12 when the Reiryoku within him drives him berserk, and this is while their spirit powers have a time limit.
  • Balanced Harem: Shido repeatedly makes clear he values and cares for all the Spirits equally. As for the girls, some compete over his romantic attention, but they all get along as True Companions and accept their shared wish to be with Shido forever.
  • Battle Harem: All the Spirits have affection for Shido, most of it romantic, and get superpowers from their Angels. Eventually, Shido can join them in battle after he seals and copies their powers.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: Originally, they would sometimes call out the names of their Astral Dresses in such a manner when equipping them. However, this would later be dropped.
  • Calling Your Attacks: When they use their Angels or their Finishing Move, they yell out the names of their attacks.
  • Code Name: The spirits are assigned code names by the AST and DEM.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Their primary colors correspond to the colors of the area on the Sephirot they represent. Tohka and Miku being the exception because Tohka's spot is multiple colors, while Miku's should be purple, but gets closer to violet due to Tohka taking purple instead.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Easily able to dish this out to just about anyone who isn't one, sealed or not. Except the stronger Wizards like Ellen, who can easily curb-stomp them, sealed or not. These become rare after Volume 7 due to new technology revealed and used by DEM.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Their powers come at an expense of being persecuted just for existing.
  • De-power: With Mio's death, their spirit powers disappear, reverting them back into regular humans.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: White-haired Origami uses light, black-haired Kurumi uses shadow (along with time), blue-haired Yoshino uses water, and redhead Kotori uses fire.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: All of them have whitened pupils, presumably as a side effect of gaining Spirit powers.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: They all become friends despite causing a lot of trouble for the setting. When a new Spirit appears, the girls are usually happy to meet them, as both Natsumi and Nia find out despite their misgivings.
  • Fish out of Water: Some Spirits struggle to adjust to human society to various degrees, but especially Tohka.
  • Friendless Background: Comes with being hunted just for existing. They deal with it in various ways. The Yamai twins are relatively well adjusted in this regard, as they had each other.
  • Instant Armor: Their Astral Dresses can be summoned at any time and protect them from conventional weaponry (though Tohka's is the only one that could even begin to pass as “armor”). After Shido seals them, they can still summon limited versions of their Astral Dresses which mesh with their current outfit.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Save for Yoshino and the Yamai twins, the Spirits' Astral Dresses are elegant and stylish robes and they wear it whenever they fight. After their power is sealed, they can invoke a lesser form of their original outfit that meshes with their current outfit.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: The Spirits remember nothing of their home dimension. Because with the exception of Tohka, they were all formerly human who had their memories wiped.
  • Leitmotif: The One-Woman Wail of "Seirei" tends to play in the anime whenever a Spirit's ordeal is properly presented. A faster rendition called "Pride" is present when Kotori gives way to Efreet's violent personality; while a Dark Reprise in "Hanten - Tohka" is played when Tohka crosses the Despair Event Horizon and taps into her Inverse Form.
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: All the Spirits were isolated and had no one they could trust until Shido wins their hearts. As they gradually become Shido's Battle Harem, the Spirits also become True Companions as they often work together and form bonds of friendship.
  • Moe Anthropomorphism: All of Spirits are personifications of the Sephirots in Tree of Life
  • Most Common Superpower: With the exception of the Token Mini Moes, the Spirits tend to be rather stacked, and their Astral Dresses make sure to show it.
  • My Suit Is Also Super: Astral Dresses afford considerable protection and have powers of their own. Miku demonstrates hers can give off light which is useful both in night battles and during her concerts.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Due to their powers, they are impervious to nearly everything attackers throw at them.
  • Numerical Theme Naming: Each Spirit has the kanji for their Sephira number in either her first or last name. So do Shido, Reine and Mio Takamiya.
  • Older Than They Look: Some Spirits have been around for nearly 30 years, but still look like young girls. After their powers are sealed, they can age normally.
  • Our Angels Are Different: Each Spirit has a weapon named after a major angel. Further, their Astral Dress armors have religiously significant names as well.
  • Our Spirits Are Different: They're all cute girls from another dimension. Or that was what was believed at first. Turns out the only Spirits who always existed as such are Tohka and Mio, but the rest are all human girls who were turned into Spirits after Mio gave them the Sephira Crystals.
  • Power Crystal: The source of a Spirit's powers are gems called Sephira Crystals, most of which were given to them by Phantom, and one of which was given by Mio. Unfortunately the crystals' powers were originally toxic and required multiple hosts to refine them, and the removal of a Sephira Crystal kills the host. Kotori is the only known character who's Sephira Crystal has a known past host.
  • Power Incontinence: By virtue of involuntarily causing spacequakes whenever they come to this world. They can also voluntarily cause them. Some of the ones with elemental powers effect the weather without meaning to. Sealed Spirits can sometimes reactivate their powers without meaning to when upset or emotionally unstable. And worse, a Spirit that crosses the Despair Event Horizon achieves Inverse Form and immediately starts rampaging indiscriminately.
  • Power Levels: Ratatoskr actually has a databook that records the Spirits by several parameters: threat level (using an alphabetical scale, though some ranks can get wonky), spacequake power, strength, consistency/defence, Spirit level, agility and intelligence.
  • Red Baron: Each Angel in the Light Novels are written with a title that usually describes their powers. For example, Tohka's Sandalphon is written alongside a Kanji that is read as "Massacre Ruler"
  • Re-Power: By each grabbing one of Beast's swords, the Spirits are able to temporarily regain their powers.
  • Restored My Faith in Humanity: Several of them held distrust or even contempt for humans before warming up to Shido.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Their Angels are named after the Archangels of their respective Sephirot of the Kabbalah Tree of Life, based on the numerical kanji in their namesnote . Their Astral Dresses are named after the Divine Names of said Sephirot.
  • Significant Birth Date: Only Kotori's and Yamai's are revealed within the story, with the rest revealed in side content.
    • Kurumi's birthday is June 10th, the "Anniversary of Time" from when Japan's first water clock was set.
    • Miku's birthday is January 19th, known as Karaoke Day.
    • Natsumi's birthday is July 23rd, which comes from the syllables in her name "Na-tsu-mi" (7-2-3).
    • Origami's birthday, November 11th, is Origami Day, dedicated to her namesake paper craft.
    • Mukuro's birthday, September 12th, is Space Day, the date that Japan first got an astronaut into space.
    • Mio's birthday is Christmas, marking the birth of the Son of God in Christianity.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: All of them fell in love with Shido because he stood up for them when no one else did.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Latter volumes show that Spirits can tap into an alternate form when their emotional levels reach an extremely low level, called Inverse Form. Their Astral Dress and appearance change in the process to match their state, and their Angels become Demon Kings (named after the Qliphoth of their respective Sephirot). Depending on the severity of their despair, they can suffer anywhere from Laser-Guided Amnesia in regards to the events that drove them to despair, to complete mental breakdown. But in any case, they will attack anyone and everyone in their sights indiscriminately. According to Isaac Westcott, this is their actual form in the bordering dimension. Tohka and Origami each tap into their Inverse forms in volume 7 and 10 respectively, followed by Nia in volume 13, and almost followed by Mukuro in Volume 15.
    • Subverted in Volume 15 when Tohka inverses again, where her Inverse self doesn't show any of the traits mentioned above and actually remembers Shido. She also implies that in her case at least, she may be Tohka's true self before she lost her memories, having since becoming a separate personality like the old and new timeline versions of Origami.
    • Volume 16 reveals that all Sephira Crystals were originally Qlipha Crystals. It's only when Mio saw the effect these crystals had on their hosts that she turned them into Sephira crystals to make their powers easier to control.
  • Trapped in Another World: In Memoria Freese's crossover campaign, Ais Catastrophe, several of the Spirits, alongside Shido, find themselves transported into the world of Orario as the result of an unknown cause. It's later revealed that it was the work of a false Kaguya Yamai.
  • Transformation Sequence: Both played straight and inverted. Spirits can turn their Astral Dress into normal clothing and back via this. It's mentioned that there is less protective value in that mode, and all the Spirits seem to revert to their normal Astral Dress for combat. Or as much of their clothing as they can, anyway. The length of each Transformation Sequence varies. The first time we see this is Tohka changing her Astral Dress into a school uniform for her date with Shido.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Most of the Spirits don't bother with tactics or forethought since they're so powerful there's no reason for them to. This causes problems when they fight enemies who can counter their most straightforward attacks. Volume 12 proves just how skilled they are with their powers, since Berserk!Shido has much more raw power than their sealed selves, they're all depowered, and yet they're perfectly capable of using what little they have to overwhelm him.
  • Was Once a Man: The Spirits are former humans that obtained Sephira Crystals from Phantom, as proven by Origami, Kotori, Miku, Nia and Mukuro. However the idea wasn't brought up until Volume 13 by Nia as a theory, and then said theory was confirmed by Inverse Tohka in Volume 15. Before that, Kotori believed some of the Spirits had always been Spirits, or Pure Spirits as she says. The First Spirit is the exception as Inverse Tohka explains the Sephira Crystals all came from her. Volume 18 revealed that Tohka is also a pure Spirit, as the Sephira Crystal of Malkuth had developed its own ego and gave birth to her.

    Tohka Yatogami

Tohka Yatogami

Voiced by: Marina Inoue (Japanese), Michelle Rojas (English), María García (Latin-American Spanish)

Code name: "Princess" / "Dea"

Angel: Sandalphon (Throne)

Astral Dress: Adonai Melek

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tohka_yatogami_astral_dress.png
"You were there for me, you saved me, much like how today, you asked me out on a date and showed me how nice this world is."

The first Spirit that Shido encounters. Shido named her Tohka after the date of their first meeting (April 10), with one kanji being different. Reine later added the Yatogami surname. Shido seals her powers at the end of Volume 1, and she is allowed to attend the same school as him.

Traits that apply to both incarnations
  • Alternate Identity Amnesia: Her natural and Inverse forms have separate memories. Inverse Tohka doesn't recognize Shido or the name he gave her, while when Shido seals her Inverse self, Tohka has no idea what happened afterwards.
  • Back from the Dead: Mio's will influences the world to resurrect Tohka by the end of Volume 22.
  • Battle Ballgown: Her Astral Dress is a set of purple-and-cream plated armor and underneath, she wears a dress with a two-layered, knee-length skirt which has a pink-to-white gradient.
  • BFS: Her Angel, Sandalphon, is a massive broadsword which emerges from a throne. By fusing the throne with the sword, she can transform Sandalphon into Halvanhelev, which is an even bigger blade with gold and black etchings and red Tron Lines. Her Superpowered Evil Side wields a dark version of Sandalphon, called Nehemah, and can similarly reform her blade into Paverschlev.
  • Came Back Strong: After Mio seemingly kills her in Volume 18, she comes back able to draw from the powers of all the other Spirits (including Mio herself) to actually put up a fight this time... but then Mio simply uses her third angel Ain to wipe Tohka from existence.
  • Cool Board: Sandalphon’s throne can be converted into one, which she used to help Shido reach Yoshino.
  • Cool Chair: Her Angel's scabbard is a throne, of all things. It can combine with her BFS for her Finishing Move.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Her hair and eyes are both purple.
  • Dimensional Cutter: The final volume reveals this is Sandalphon's full power, but Tohka subconsciously sealed it out of worry of hurting others
  • Dual Wielding: In her Full Form, she gets a secondary Angel called Shekinah, which, like her own Angel Sandalphon, is a broadsword. Her Fusion Dance with Tenka allows her to wield the latter’s Nahemah along with Sandalphon.
  • Duality Motif: In the two personalities' fused form, the right eye is dark purple like Tohka's while the left eye is fucsia like her Inverse personality.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Briefly sports these prior to going over the Despair Event Horizon.
  • Dumb Muscle: Ratatoskr's confidential files on Spirits' data put her physical prowess at the very top of the list, while setting her intelligence as low as it goes, though this could be reference to Tohka being a Fish out of Water with airheaded tendencies. Funnily enough, this is also the only stat that remains virtually unchanged in her Inverse Form's analysis (it goes up by just 1), despite trading defence for even greater speed and attack power.
  • Fish out of Water: She thought the world was an uninhabited wasteland only populated by flying mecha troops that would ineffectually try to kill her. Nine months later and she's still missing some parts of being human, though she's getting a handle on that love thing.
  • Forced to Watch: Westcott orders Ellen to kill Shido while Tohka watches from behind a barrier. This is what makes her snap and assume Inverse Form.
  • Fusion Dance: Tohka and Tenka merge together to take on Mio's defense system in Volume 20.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Her dress, hair and eye are predominantly purple, and she's a bonafide Lady of War in battle, despite being a ditz everywhere else.
  • Hair Color Dissonance: The novels describe her hair as "night-colored" and on rare occasions black, but its actual depiction ranged from purple dark enough to approach black to straight-up purple.
  • Holding Back the Phlebotinum: Tenka from the parallel world reveals that Sandalphon (and by extension Nahemah) are actually capable of cutting through the fabric of spacetime, but Tohka's kind nature subconsciously restrained its full cutting power.
  • Honorary Princess: She was given the Code Name "Princess", but she's by no means royalty.
  • Idiot Hero: One of the most prominent Spirits in the story, and one of the strongest fighters. Her airhead personality is a frequent basis for lighthearted moments.
  • Irony: While Tohka's favorite food is kinako bread, Inverse Tohka hates it.
  • Lady of War: Her Astral Dress is an elegant Battle Ballgown and she swings Sandalphon with exceptional grace, hence the codename "Princess".
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: The most extreme case among the Spirits as she had next to no memories, not even having a name like the others do. This creates a lot of Fish out of Water for her. This comes back in Inverse Form, except she has no problem with not remembering anything. When snapped out of it, she has no memory of what just happened.Subverted for her Inverse Form in Volume 15, as despite Mukuro locking everyone's memories of him away, Inverse Tohka shockingly remembers him and seems to have her own memories unique to her.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Tohka is innocent, sweet and wears bright-colored clothes, while her Inverse self later named Tenka is aloof, callous and wears dark-colored clothes.
  • Never Given a Name: She is only referred to as "Princess" until Shido gives her a name, and she has no memories indicating she ever had an original name instead appearing to have had none before Shido gifted her with one. He later names her inverse form Tenka.
  • Non-Elemental: Unlike other Spirits, she is not associated with a particular element. Instead, she controls Mana itself. Although considering her spirit mana tends to rip the ground apart if her emotional state gets unstable and Sandalphon's throne rises from it, she may indirectly have some Dishing Out Dirt abilities in the form of seismic waves.
  • Pure Magic Being: While the other Spirits were once humans who received Sephira Crystals, Tohka was born directly from her own, hence why she was originally nameless.
  • Purple Is Powerful: In line with her overall purple colouring theme, she's one of the strongest Spirits in the story.
  • Rank Inflation: Her threat level as a Spirit is stated to be AAA-class, higher than Yoshino and Miku, who are B-class and A-class respectively. Her Inverse Form clocks in at SS-class, the highest threat level seen so far, surpassing Kurumi's S-class. Only Metatron is able to evenly match her in terms of Spirit mana during their rematch in volume 10, both normal and Inverse.
  • Red Baron: Her Angel Sandalphon has one, as "Massacre Ruler" (though it is sometimes referred to by "Throne of Annihilation" instead). As does her Demon King Nahemah, dubbed "Tyrant Ruler"
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: In a single person. Tohka is the cheerful and warmhearted Red Oni while her Inverse self Tenka is the standoffish and coldhearted Blue Oni.
  • The Rival: She and Origami already have an established animocity with one another before the series even begins, and it literally only gets worse once both women fall in love with Shido. Both of them regularly try to beat each other at everything, especially if Shido is involved.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge:
    • Goes ballistic when she think Origami kills Shido. She references it when convincing Origami that she understands how the latter must feel about the Spirit "Efreet" presumably being the culprit behind her parents' death, and asks if Origami is really willing to make Shido to feel the same way by killing his sister in front of him.
    • Her Inverse form has one toward Shido in Volume 15 for "humiliating" her with the kiss that sealed her back in Volume 7. Origami manages her talk her into subjecting Shido to the same "humiliation" instead of just killing him outright, and she ultimately just lets herself get sealed again when given the chance to do the latter.
  • Signature Headgear: In Spirit form, she wears a butterfly-shaped hair accessory at the back of her head. As a civilian, she switches it for a red ribbon with a similar shape.
  • Spanner in the Works: She's been either directly or indirectly involved in being able to help Shido seal the other Spirits.
    • She used Sandalphon's throne to help Shido reach Yoshino.
    • While she wasn't sealed, she helped Shido's resolve to try and save her by telling him why she and Kurumi weren't so different and how he changed her for the better.
    • She distracted Origami long enough to give Shido the chance to seal Kotori by giving her an Armor-Piercing Question.
    • She showed Shido how to use Sandalphon to get the Yamai sisters to stop fighting and listen to him.
    • Shido's determination to rescue her and his consequent defending of Miku showed her Shido truly meant his promise that she'd protect her.
    • When Natsumi tried to flee disguised as Kotori and then tried getting the others to admit she was ugly when running into them, Tohka, one of the first two she ran into, ends up telling her she doesn't think that which ends up later convincing Natsumi to help stop the falling satellites.
    • In the new timeline, Tohka feels something is missing since she didn't meet Origami like in the old timeline. Her constant off feelings causes her to be the first to react when Inverse Origami rampages, and helps Shido get close enough to reach her.
    • When Nia's dying due to her Qlipha being ripped out, she noticed she still had some spirit power and told everyone, letting Shido know how to save her.
    • Inverse Tohka got into a fight with Mukuro, and in the process Mukuro nearly killed Shido and began to inverse, but Inverse Tohka helps him get close enough to seal Mukuro.
  • Split-Personality Switch Trigger: Whenever Tohka thinks she might lose Shido, her Inverse self takes over. A kiss from Shido turns her back into the usual Tohka.
  • Sword Beam: Her main form of attack as a Spirit. Becomes even more impressive when she uses her Angel for her Finishing Move Halvanhelev. In her Inverse Form, a single slash from her Finishing Move Paverschlev creates a Sword Beam so powerful that it not only wipes out most Kurumi clones and Bandersnatch drones fighting in the vicinity, but also cleaves a very large portion of Tenguu City.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Her eyes are purple with a small hint of gold. The novels call them "crystalline".
  • Tron Lines: Sandalphon's blade is decorated with glowing blue lines. Nahemah's are red.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Due to the Spirits' powers disappearing after Mio's death, as Tohka is a pure spirit made from spirit power instead of a human who became one.

Traits that apply to normal Tohka
  • Accent On The Wrong Syllable: She tends to mispronounce words with long vowels. This includes Shido's name, which is written in katakana (usually reserved for foreign words). Tenka also says his name this way the one time she actually doesn't just call him "human".
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: She enjoys it when Shido pats her on the head. To a degree where she gets jealous when Shido pets others on the head and not her.
  • All Your Powers Combined: She gets her Full Form by absorbing power from the other Spirits, her new astral dress even shares traits from the Spirits who's powers she absorbed.
  • Badass in Distress: Gets captured by the DEM at the end of volume 6, and volume 7 is dedicated to Shido trying to rescue her. He does, but not before Tohka's Inverse Form nearly kills everyone there.
  • Baritone of Strength: She had a relatively low voice pitch (courtesy of Marina Inoue and Michelle Rojas in the anime) when Shido first encountered her while she was fighting the AST.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Shido manages to survive against Tohka early on because he was the first person that didn't want to shoot her. Later on, this becomes the reason she changes into who she is now, and then later what makes her fall in love with him.
  • Berserker Tears: During her Roaring Rampage of Revenge toward Origami when the latter appeared to have killed Shido at the end of their first date.
  • Bifauxnen: Prior to the school trip to the beach, Tohka tries to pass as a boy in order to be with Shido. She tucks most of heir hair in a ponytail, puts on the male uniform, and starts using masculine pronouns such as "ore". Origami approves, but claims that Shido should dress as a girl instead to rebalance things.
  • Big-Breast Pride: Downplayed. In the first OVA, while imagining herself beating Origami in each game, one of the things she says to insult her is calling her flat chested with a smirk on her face unlike the angry frowns she gives with every other insult.
  • Big Eater: Loves to eat, even if it may not be edible.
  • Character Catchphrase: She frequently says "umu", an old-fashioned way of expressing confirmation.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She gets easily jealous when other girls put the moves on Shido, and especially when Origami is involved.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She was originally very cold and hostile to everyone, assuming that everyone was out to kill her and refusing any of Shido's attempts to communicate with her. However, after their second meeting, Shido gives her a name, and gains her trust, and the following day she sees the world from Shido's eyes which leads to her becoming the person she is now.
  • Determinator: In Volume 12, her remaining power fades away and she's directly in the path of the volatile spiritual power Shido was emitting. Despite having everything against her and without the aid of the others, she walks towards Shido on her own, and she makes it.
  • The Ditz: She can be quite airheaded at times.
  • Expressive Accessory: Her ribbons wiggle on their own when she is excited. Or hungry.
  • Extreme Omnivore: She claims to eat frying pans.
  • Forgiving the Accidental Pervert: During the Yamai Tempest arc, Shido gets tricked into entering the women's hot springs by Kaguya and Yuzuru. Rather than blame him for being a pervert, Tohka actually tries to help him sneak out of the hot springs when Ai, Mai, and Mii enter the bath. This ends with Tohka accidentally pushing Shido into the ocean, but it's the thought that counts.
  • Full-Name Basis: With Origami to show her enmity towards the latter. She stops doing so in the new timeline.
  • Genki Girl: After she warms up to Shido, she's much livelier, if too enthusiastic for her own good.
  • Girly Run: Sometimes, she runs like a little girl.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Generally a subversion, as she has a surprising sense of modesty for someone so unfamiliar with human society, leading to Shido getting pulverized when Kotori tricks him into several Accidental Pervert moments. In the OVA, she takes a nude of herself in a photo booth and gives it to Shido because Reine told her that anytime she takes a picture she should strip naked to do so (it was actually a health exam).
  • Insecure Love Interest: Despite Shido's reassurances, she worries she's not good enough for him, and that he'll get tired of her antics and leave. At one point, she eats very little while on a date with him because she's afraid he'll be turned off by someone who eats a lot after watching a program stating that guys are likely to be turned off by girls who eat more than they do, though he reassures her and she instantly starts eating massive amounts again.
  • Is It Something You Eat?: She constantly asks what is edible to humans, as a result of being a Big Eater and a Fish out of Water.
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: She's the most airheaded of the Spirits, but also one of the sweetest.
  • Love Epiphany: Finally figures out why she feels the way she does about Shido in volume 12. Puts her newfound knowledge to good use by demanding a kiss for every kiss he's given the others.
  • Meaningful Name: The first name Shido gave her means "tenth day of the month" which Shido came up with since he met her on April 10th (though the kanji for "day" is replaced with the homonymous kanji for "fragrance").
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: In Date A Live: Spirit Pledge her Shekinah form plays more like a Hack and Slash character. Whereas the other characters has one attack button, and 3 attack skills, she instead has 2 attack buttons (one for her melee and the other for ranged attacks) and and one skill button. Her attack skills are executed through an attack combination instead.
  • Morality Pet: Funnily enough, she serves as one to her own Inverse self. Despite her callous behavior toward everyone else, Inverse Tohka cares a lot about her other self, telling Shido not to upset Tohka as she's resealed, and giving Tohka the drive to take on Mio despite knowing that they're going to wind up dead. After Mio's death, she uses their mother's power to create an artificial world to extend Tohka's remaining time with her loved ones for as long as possible.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In the Memoria Freese Campaign Ais Catastrophe, she gets mortified when her fight to defend herself against Ais/Aiz Wallenstein somehow turned the latter into an inverse spirit. Though it later turns out it was planned by a fake Kaguya.
  • Never Gets Fat: Tohka can eat large amounts of food without putting on a single pound.
  • New Transfer Student: At the end of Volume 1, Ratatoskr fills her an application to be in the same school as Shido. The fake documentation is so thorough that the AST is forced to behave as though she were an ordinary student instead of the Spirit they'd fought just days before.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Tohka outright acknowledges that she could have ended up just like Kurumi had Shidou not saved her, which restores Shido's resolve to save Kurumi.
  • Perpetual Frowner: When she's first introduced, she's seen with a frown on her face. At least until Shido befriends her.
  • Powered Armor: After she Came Back Strong in Volume 18, instead of merging Sandalphon's throne with the sword to summon Halvanhelev, she converts it into armor called Ratelibish, which made her powerful enough to actually injure Mio.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The emotional Red to Origami's stoic Blue. Only applies to everyday interactions, in battle she burns cold while Origami is likely to go off like a (red) rocket.
  • Say My Name: In Chapter 1-32 of the Memoria Freese Campaign Ais Catastrophe, she screams out Ais's full name when the latter summons her Demon King, Heaven's Catastrophe.
  • Sobriquet Sex Switch: In the novels, Tohka renames herself "Tohru" when she dresses like a Bifauxnen.
  • Stepford Smiler: In Volume 20, she learns that Mio’s death will gradually erase all the Sephira Crystals she created, and Tohka will disappear along with hers because she’s a pure Spirit. Deep down, she’s terrified, but she continues acting normally to not upset Shido more than necessary. It’s only after hearing Yoshino confess her feelings to Shido that she finally breaks down and gives her own confession (which seemed to be Yoshino’s intent) before disappearing.
  • Super Gullible: Origami frequently plays with her naivety about the world.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: She becomes more cheerful after Shido gains her trust.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She really likes kinako (roasted soy flour) bread.
  • Tsundere: Sweet (Dere) type. She's usually sweet towards almost everyone, especially Shido, but try to flirt with the latter and she becomes a short-tempered Clingy Jealous Girl.
  • Undead Tax Exemption: Some characters comment on her sudden appearance, but not even Origami visibly connects the Spirit "Princess" with the new girl. The novel explains why: Reine gave Tohka such a detailed background that Origami's superiors up to the highest ranks have been forced to concede that she simply could not be anything other than the Ordinary Highschool Student her attitude proves she is not.
  • Unknowingly in Love: She initially doesn't understand what love is and that she feels strange when seeing Shido with other girls because she loves Shido.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: With Shido. They're obviously attracted to each other, but several factors, mainly Tohka's naivety and Shido's evergrowing Spirit harem, keep them from being proper boyfriend and girlfriend.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: She attacks anyone stupid enough to threaten Shido.
  • Vocal Evolution: In the original Japanese version, Marina Inoue went with a deeper sounding female voice for Tohka in the early episodes of Season 1 compared to the higher pitch that comes after.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: She doesn't know why seeing Shido kiss Yoshino (it was on accident) felt so painful. Figures it out in Volume 12.
  • Wingding Eyes: In the OVA, her eyes become starry when she shows her new phone to Shido. She also gets swirly eyes after taking three trash cans to the face (just one in the novels) from the windstorm the Yamai sisters' fight is causing.
  • Wistful Amnesia: After Mukuro seals everyone's memory of Shido, Tohka's subconscious feeling that someone important is missing from her life stresses her out so much that she Inverses again.
  • The Worf Effect: While she's consistently shown to be one of the strongest Spirits in a straight-up fight, Ellen easily defeats her twice. Justified since Tohka fought the first two battle in her limited Astral Dress and therefore couldn't use her full strength against Ellen, who is explicitly stated to be the world's strongest Wizard.
  • The World Is Just Awesome: She'd developed this attitude by the end of her first date with Shido, to the point that she was starting to sympathize with the people who wanted her dead for the threat she could pose to it.

Traits that apply to her Inverse Form
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tohka_yatogami_inverse.png

The Inverse form of Tohka. She first appears in Volume 7, when Tohka's helplessness to stop Ellen from killing Shido pushes her past the Despair Event Horizon. Unlike the mindlessly destructive Inverse forms seen later in the story, Tohka's Inversion results in a separate, but far more less ruthless personality taking over.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She has black hair like the regular Tohka, but she has a very cold, arrogant, and hostile demeanor that makes her completely unapproachable.
  • Badass Fingersnap: She's able to manipulate her artificial world by snapping her fingers.
  • Barehanded Blade Block: Her confrontation with Ellen sees the former catch the Wizard's laser blade with her bare hand (the novels do indicate that she wasn't unscathed), before following up with a Sword Beam aimed at Westcott.
  • Black Swords Are Better: Nahemah is a pitch-black, and evidently much more powerful version of Sandalphon.
  • The Comically Serious: In Volume 15, while competing with Mukuro at a cafe for Shido's lips, a maid tells them to perform a heart gesture and chant "Moe Moe Kyun" to get Shido to eat cake. Inverse Tohka proceeds to do it to the cake she put on the floor so as to make Shido eat it like a dog, and later performs the gesture at Mukuro, apparently believing that it's a sign of aggression.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Some side content suggests that Inverse Tohka hates kinako (roasted soy flour) bread.
  • The Empath: For much of the story, she could not perceive the outside world, and could only sense Tohka's emotions. After repeated Inversions, she can share Tohka's senses, allowing her to see how much the latter loves Shido, and admits that it eventually started to rub off on her.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Her Astral Dress looks almost the same as the one worn by the regular Tohka, except for a darker color scheme and a much more revealing design, such as including a Navel-Deep Neckline and see-through skirt.
  • Evil Laugh: She lets out a cackle after seemingly killing Shido with Paverschelev.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Her voice is lower than the regular Tohka and she lacks all of Tohka's nicer personality traits and love for Shido, making her very cold and cruel.
  • Eye Colour Change: Her eyes are fucsia, in contrast to the regular Tohka's dark purple eyes.
  • Haughty "Hmph": Frequently does when she accompanies Tohka and Shido on their date, which she only reluctantly did to please Tohka.
  • Hey, You!: She rarely ever calls anyone by name, which could be influenced by not having a name herself for most of the story. She merely calls Shido "human", spent her entire confrontation with Mukuro calling her "Key Spirit", and usually refers to Mio, who is essentially her mother, as "that woman". She eventually starts calling her other self "Tohka" and addresses Shido by his name for the first time as she bids him farewell at the end of their date.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: After Mukuro's powers are sealed, Tenka willingly lets Shido seal her, but tells him to never make Tohka sad again. When she accompanies Tohka and Shido on their date in Volume 20, she openly threatens to kill him if he doesn’t keep Tohka happy.
  • Informed Flaw: Ratatoskr puts her intelligence just one point above Tohka’s comically low value, though it doesn’t really show up in the story since she’s portrayed as much more serious.
  • Jerkass: She's generally condescending and hostile to everyone around her. Even when she's talked down from outright killing Shido in Volume 15, she still takes every opportunity to belittle and torment him.
  • Literal Split Personality: She gains her own body by using Mio's power after taking her Sephira Crystal.
  • Meaningful Name: In Volume 20, Shido decides to name her Tenka to distinguish her from Tohka. While the kanji for "Ten" means "sky" or "heaven", it sounds like the English word for the number 10.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her Astral Dress is open in middle exposing much of her chest and navel.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: She protects Shido from Mukuro's Inversion because she doesn't want him dead before she gets revenge for "humiliating" her back in Volume 7.
  • Physical God: In Volume 20, taking control over Mio's Crystal makes her an existence similar to a god.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: She wears a violet skirt complimented with black stockings as part of her civilian garb, giving her a more serious look than her other self.
  • Purple Is the New Black: Her Astral Dress is a noticeably darker purple than Tohka's usual attire, and it has more sinister connotations, in line with the cause of her Inverse Form's activation. She also channels dark energy throughout the entire DEM building, and black clouds gather around her as she winds up for one of her tremendously powerful attacks.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: A very strange and unique example. Not for Tohka herself, but for Tenka, as Mukuro's sealing of Shido from everyone's memories didn't effect her Inverse form's personality. Yet Tohka inverses as a result of the stress from forgetting Shido, but when Inverse Tohka originally appeared, she had no clue who Shido or Tohka even were.
  • Sadist: In Volume 15, she sits on top of Shido and tries to make him eat cake from the floor, spanking his butt when he starts to object.
  • She Is the King: Isaac Westcott calls her Inverse Form "the Demon King".
  • Split-Personality Makeover: While the normal Tohka's hair is always partially tied into a ponytail, her hair is always fully untied, even with a similar ribbon in her Astral Dress.
  • Stripperiffic: Her Inverse Astral Dress is noticeably skimpy, featuring Navel-Deep Neckline that bares most of her skin down to her midriff, and a transparent skirt that shows off her Zettai Ryouiki.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: When Ellen stabs Shido from behind and moves to finish him off, Tohka transforms into her Inverse self, which laughs off all of Ellen's attacks before trying to murder Shido and Miku. It takes a lot of shouting from Shido and a recreation of their first kiss to return her to normal. It comes back in Volume 15, but the evil part is subverted this time. Inverse Tohka even willingly lets her powers and herself be sealed for "Tohka's" sake.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Just to get rid of Shido, she uses Paverschlev to cut a huge chunk of the city and the mountains behind it.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: By Volume 20, while she retains a somewhat condescending attitude toward Shido, she admits that she's been influenced by her other self's feelings toward him and is openly supportive of their relationship.
  • Worthy Opponent: She had initially brushed Mukuro off as an annoying "Key Spirit" who was getting in the way of her payback toward Shido. but she sounds disappointed when Shido seals her.

Yoshino and her puppet Yoshinon
"I... I'm not Yoshinon. I'm Yoshino. Yoshinon is my best friend."

The second Spirit to appear. She's very shy and relies on her Hand Puppet Yoshinon to communicate with others. She causes rain to fall whenever she appears, which is part of her ability to control the three states of water. Mainly uses ice attacks though. Shido seals her powers at the end of Volume 2, and later lives in an apartment specifically built for sealed Spirits.

Traits that apply to Yoshino and her puppet
  • Consulting Mister Puppet: Yoshino is almost never seen without her Hand Puppet Yoshinon. She willingly removes Yoshinon as she confesses to Shido in Volume 20, and gradually stopped wearing Yoshinon entirely by the end of the story, though the puppet is still a cherished keepsake from her late mother.
  • Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: In a single person. Yoshinon is an outspoken puppet with a loud voice while Yoshino is a shy girl with a quiet voice.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Yoshino is the timid and quiet Blue Oni to Yoshinon's energetic and noisy Red Oni.
  • Split Personality: Reine suggests that Yoshinon is another personality Yoshino developed so she could have a friend to cope with the AST's constant assaults without fighting back. It's a plot point during Natsumi's arc that Yoshinon is an ordinary puppet if Yoshino isn't wearing it.

Traits that apply to Yoshino
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Much like Tohka, Yoshino becomes a little friendlier thanks to Shido being nice to her rather than trying to shoot her on sight.
  • Berserk Button: When Shido is starting to know her, he finds out Yoshino does not like it when he calls Yoshinon a mere puppet.
  • Blank White Eyes: During the search for Yoshinon, Yoshino's stomach starts to growl, and Shido asks if she's hungry. She tries to deny, but it growls again, making her blush and display these in embarrassment.
  • Bunnies for Cuteness: Her raincoat's hood sports bunny ears and a poofy tail, and her puppet Yoshinon is also rabbit-like. Her Angel Zadkiel even takes the shape of a massive ice hare, though it's not exactly cute. The artbook shows that her Demon King Astaroth similarly takes the form of a massive black hare, albeit one that glows with blue flames.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: In the anime, when it suddenly starts raining during Tohka and Shido's first date in Episode 3, you can see Yoshino in front of the arcade they take shelter in. Naturally, the following episodes focus on her as the second Spirit Shido meets.
  • Covert Pervert: For such a quiet and timid girl, some of the comments she makes through Yoshinon are quite vulgar. Not to mention, she greatly enjoys Soap Operas, she once untied Tohka's top in front of Shido, and this is on top of her surprisingly clever tactics in seducing Shido in Volume 12. That last case is even lampshaded by Kotori.
  • Crazy-Prepared: When each of the Spirits are given the chance to seduce Shido in Volume 12, Yoshino wears a one-piece swimsuit. But then, when it gets damaged due to DEM attack, Yoshino simply tears off her swimsuit completely to reveal another one, bikini worn. This not only successfully stuns Shido, but Kotori even comments that she is "a terrifying child".
  • Curtains Match the Window: Light blue hair with matching eyes.
  • Dark Horse Victory: Wins a date with Shido over Tohka and Origami who had been competing with each other for most of the session. To be fair, Yoshinon had declared earlier on that Yoshino would win, though that was likely said in jest. She also won the Spirit battle royale in Volume 20 and earned the right to express her love confession to Shido.
  • "Do It Yourself" Theme Tune: Iori Nomizu sings the second and third ending credits (as well as Yoshino's own end-of-arc song), and is also part of the band "sweet ARMS", which does the opening song for both seasons. Amusingly, Yoshino finds "Save My Heart" embarrassing in a karaoke scene in ''Arusu Install".
  • Elemental Eye Colors: She has water/ice powers and fittingly, her eyes (and hair because Curtains Match the Window) are blue.
  • Emotional Powers: Whenever Yoshinon is separated from her, Yoshino gets so anxious that she unintentionally freezes her surroundings.
  • Eyepatch of Power: When in her Inverse Form, Yoshino wears an eyepatch identical to her puppet's.
  • Fragile Speedster: She has fairly high reiryoku and is second only to the Yamai sisters in speed, but her strength and defence are lacking.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: While she probably meant every word of her confession to Shido in Volume 20, it was just as much intended to push him and Tohka to be open about their feelings for each other before the latter disappears.
  • Ice Magic Is Water: Her favorite application of water magic is ice, which she can use for defense or transportation.
  • An Ice Person: While she can manipulate all three states of water, this is the main application of her Spirit powers, exhibited by how she whips up a blizzard, freezes opponents' feet or shoots icicles at the drop of a hat.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Her blue eyes go with her friendly, yet shy personality.
  • In the Hood: Her Astral Dress is a green raincoat with bunny ears.
  • Making a Splash: She can manipulate the three states of water, though she mostly uses ice for attacking with the light novel also demonstrating she can use rain drops like bullets. It also rains every time she comes to the world.
  • Mini-Mecha: Zadkiel is, interestingly enough, controlled by Yoshino through an interface on its back.
  • Mystical White Hair: Unlike other Inverse Spirits shown so far who keep their hair colors (only darkened for some), Yoshino's blue hair turn white when she enters hers.
  • Never Bareheaded: As a Spirit, she wears a rabbit-eared hood over her head. Her profile states that she likes cute hats, and is indeed usually seen wearing one after she integrates into human society.
  • Nice Girl: A very friendly young girl at heart.
  • No Full Name Given: Yoshino is one of two Spirits who doesn't have her surname revealed initially, the other being Natsumi. Her surname is Himekawa, being originally an ill girl who went missing after she was turned into a Spirit over 20 years ago.
  • Older Than They Look: She was turned into a Spirit over 20 years ago, meaning that at the start of Volume 1, she's at least in her early thirties.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: She stuns everyone by willingly removing Yoshinon before she confesses to Shido at the end of Volume 20.
  • Overnight Age-Up: In Volume 11, she's turned into a highschooler's age briefly by Natsumi. Happens again in Volume 16, this time as an adult.
  • Power Incontinence: Suffers this even more so than other Spirits; if anything happens to Yoshinon, Yoshino's mental state becomes unstable and she ends up either causing rain (at best) or freezing stuff around her (at worst). Also, it rains whenever she comes into this world.
  • Powers Do the Fighting: Unlike other Spirits, Yoshino herself doesn't have any combat abilities and is weak to taking direct attacks. Instead her Angel, Zadkiel, manifests as a giant rabbit-like puppet and fights for her by absorbing water from the air and releasing it in the form of freezing air.
  • Red Baron: Her Angel Zadkiel is the "Frozen Puppet"
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Yoshino's blue eyes turn red when she is in her Inverse form.
  • Reluctant Warrior: She doesn't even fight back against the AST if she can help it, if she gets separated from Yoshinon however...
  • Shrinking Violet: While her Hand Puppet has an outspoken personality, Yoshino herself is quite shy around people. She's much more passive than the other Spirits and has trouble articulating full sentences, relying on Yoshinon to do the talking for her. Later volumes have Yoshino speaking for herself as she gains confidence.
  • Sickly Child Grew Up Strong: After her mother, Nagisa, stopped visiting her at the hospital due to having died in a workplace accident, her health gradually became worse. It was only by becoming a Spirit that she would recover.
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: In addition to being An Ice Person, she's extremely shy and soft-spoken. She deals with this by communicating through her hand puppet Yoshinon whenever the situation calls for a more extroverted approach. This is completely averted in her Inverse Form, however.
  • Split Personality Take Over: The possible motif of her Inverse form. Unlike every other Inversion shown so far, Yoshino's appearance changes drastically once Inverted: Her hair becomes white, her eyes glow red, and she wears an eyepatch on her right eye; the impression leaves one wonder if Yoshinon takes over her body. This is made more obvious as Inverse Yoshino has a puppet that lacks all of Yoshinon's usual decorations (sans the dress) with its eyes being shut, like a shy girl Yoshino normally is.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: Her surname "Himekawa" contains "ice" and "river", referencing her ice and water powers.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: While it hasn't appeared in the main story, the artbook released alongside Vol 16 and the Date A Bullet spin-off reveals what her Inverse Form looks like.
  • Tender Tears: She cries when she's reunited with Yoshinon, thanks to Shido. After that, she cries whenever something happens to Yoshinon.
  • Those Two Girls: After befriending Natsumi the two are often seen together, with Yoshino even asking Natsumi to accompany on her quest to retrieve her lost memories, and introducing Natsumi as her best friend. She's also close to Tohka, as the two are often seen hanging out and playing together and acting in a sisterly way.
  • Ventriloquism: She's a skilled ventriloquist and since she's so shy, she uses it to make her Hand Puppet "speak" for her.
  • Water Is Womanly: Yoshino can control the three states of water, but she prefers using ice. She is also a very polite and gentle, if shy, young girl who wouldn't even harm a fly.

Traits that apply to Yoshinon
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Yoshinon's visible eye glows when Yoshino is pissed.
  • Gratuitous English: At the very end of episode 5 of the anime, Yoshinon says "To be continued!"
  • Hand Puppet: Yoshino carries Yoshinon as her companion puppet and usually speaks through it.
  • It Was a Gift: Yoshinon was a gift given to her by her mother while she was at the hospital.
  • Power Limiter: Sort of. Yoshinon calms Yoshino down enough for her not to use her powers on others.
  • Security Blanket: Yoshino describes Yoshinon as her hero and ideal self, claiming that it's the only reason she can stay calm while avoiding the AST's attacks. Without it, she became much more easily frightened and prone to summoning Zadkiel.
  • Snarky Non-Human Sidekick: Yoshinon, being the talkative personality of Yoshino, spends a large amount of its screentime making sarcastic comments on anyone and everyone.
  • Third-Person Person: Yoshinon always refers to itself as "Yoshinon".
  • Tragic Keepsake: Yoshinon was handmade by her mother Nagisa Himekawa, who would die in a work accident shortly afterward. Yoshinon's personality is actually Yoshino subconciously replicating Nagisa's.

"I want his power. I want to make him mine and become one with him."

The third Spirit to appear, and the most brutal so far, with a kill count of over 10,000, and one of the few Spirits so far in the series to actively kill people with her powers rather than by spacequakes alone. She kills her targets by dragging them into her shadow, "eating" them, thus replenishing her lifespan so she can cast her powers.

  • Abnormal Ammo: Zafkiel's bullets are condensed bits of her shadow.
  • Actually a Doombot: Kurumi initially stuns everyone with her apparent ability to come back to life after getting gruesomely killed over and over, but they'd really only seen her clones dying.
  • Affably Evil: She's very well-spoken and polite for a mass murderer. She plans to devour Shido for his power, but she genuinely likes him and enjoys going on dates with him. She even tries to talk Shido into letting her take his life without resistance since she thinks killing Mio in the past will undo his death anyway.
  • Aloof Ally: She's not officially part of Shido's group, but on ocassion she will help him if their goals align to some level. This includes the attack on DEM in Volume 7 because she's looking for a captive Spirit, and Volume 11 because she wants him to prove the past can be changed and Inverse Origami's rampage causes problems for her plans.
  • Animal Lover: Her love and kindness for small animals is the closest thing to a humanizing emotion that she has.
  • Anti-Villain: Her actual goal is to travel back in time to prevent the birth of the First Spirit, whose spacequake killed 150 million people and was the cause for the births of other Spirits. Doing so will retcon all the deaths she caused in preparation for it. After meeting Nia and learning she can't beat the First Spirit no matter what, she decides to kill the people who summoned it into the world: Westcott, Ellen, and Elliot.
  • Arch-Enemy: Mana has killed countless numbers of her clones to the point that it's merely a routine, and considers her purpose in life to make sure Kurumi ultimately winds up dead. Kurumi and her clone army don't take Mana that seriously, as their hostility is instead directed at the First Spirit and the people who created her.
  • Ax-Crazy: She wastes little time in demonstrating just how much of a psycho she is, killing people left and right with pleasure, though most of her victims appear to be Asshole Victims. Luckily, it seems Shido's influence has helped her mellow out of this over time, but not fully.
  • Bad Boss: Kurumi won't hesitate to kill any clones who act out of line. Her first actual appearance is to kill a clone for nearly getting sweet-talked into a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She seems like a nice, if extremely flirtatious girl. Then she starts killing people.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: It's hard to tell whether her motives are good or bad. On one hand, she's devouring people to keep her time-based powers functional, intending to accumulate enough to travel to the past and kill the First Spirit and prevent the 150 million deaths it caused. On the other, she makes those killings as sadistic as possible, and seems to have connections with Phantom, whose motivations are even more mysterious. Volume 16 reveals that she met the First Spirit, Mio Takamiya, and got her powers from her only to be betrayed when her actions led to her murdering her best friend Sawa Yamauchi. This nearly caused her to Inverse, an event that instilled Kurumi with burning hatred toward Spirits as well as broke her enough to turn her Ax-Crazy.
  • Body Backup Drive: When she's warned in advance that she's going to die from Mio's Chest Burster, she passes off her Sephira Crystal to one of her clones to prevent Mio from taking it, then repairs her original body with Dalet.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: In the first episode of season 2, Kurumi looks directly at the camera over her shoulder and talks about her goals while alone on a rooftop. However, the original scene from Volume 4 had her speaking to Phantom.
  • Breakout Character: Although she was always intended as a major character, being one of the Spirits around which the plot revolves, Kurumi is arguably the series' most popular Spirit. She even has her own spin-off novel: Date A Live Fragment: Date A Bullet.
  • Byronic Heroine: Initially, Kurumi seems to be purely evil and Ax-Crazy, but her behavior and motivations become more complex and sympathetic after her dark past is revealed, to the point that she can be considered a misguided Anti-Hero instead of a villain. She's beautiful, sophisticated, adaptable, determined, and conflicted between her murderous methods and more benevolent nature that she tries to hide.
  • Cast from Lifespan: Her 12 Bullet time powers consume her time, or in other words, life force. It's also a rare case of the lifespan being replenishable... by absorbing the lifespan or Reiryoku of others (making this closer to Cast from Hit Points). After being defeated by Kotori, she hasn't been shown killing people anymore (at least onscreen), just drains them.
  • Casting a Shadow: Manipulating shadows is her primary power. Kurumi can use her own shadow to phase into the ground or walls, as well as summon white-colored Creepily Long Arms from it. It also functions as storage, as she can store her clones and other people within it.
  • Character Catchphrase: She says "Ara Ara...." very often.
  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: A side story has her putting on a Meido outfit with Origami.
  • Crazy-Prepared:
    • In Volume 17, shortly before Shido decided to seal all of her bullets, she put into action a contingency plan just in case something were to happen to either of them during the sealing. Knowing that he sealed Vav during the events of Volume 16, but also knowing that he isn't aware that he has it, she creates a clone and and sends her one hour ahead in time with orders to tell Shido of this fact. This ends up paying dividends, as Kurumi's fear of a third-party intervention comes true and she is killed by Mio before the sealing can be done. One hour later, the clone manages to get her message to Shido and expires shortly after (due to it being exactly one hour after Kurumi dies). Shido then uses this knowledge to use Vav's Mental Time Travel ability to jump back in time 24 hours.
    • In Volume 21 Kurumi manages to survive, knowing that the clone body she transferred her memories and Sephira crystal to would disappear once the spirit powers were gone. After Mio discarded her original body, the clone used Dalet to restore it before transferring her memories and crystal back.
  • Creepy Crosses: After she steals Nia's Sephira Crystal from Westcott, Kurumi's Astral Dress gets an upgrade that comes with it being decorated by crosses, complementing her Elegant Gothic Lolita fashion style and infamous reputation as the "Nightmare".
  • Cute and Psycho: In her first arc, Kurumi goes back and forth between acting lovey-dovey around Shido and brutally murdering civilians while laughing maniacally. She tones it down later on, as the cute side of her personality becomes more prominent.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Despite how Ax-Crazy she is, Kurumi has a big weakness for cute animals, especially cats. In her second arc, Shido repeatedly tries using this to lower her guard, like making a cat-themed bento and bringing her to a spot where she can pet stray cats.
  • Dark Action Girl: Unlike the other Spirits, she is very aware of her murderous actions, and is the most dangerous one to date with a S-level threat classification, Inverse Spirits notwithstanding. She even manages to defeat Tohka, Origami and Mana successively during her date with Shido, and later on stall out Yoshino and the Yamai sisters, who were under Miku's control. Note that she doesn't hurt them or Miku because Shido specifically asks her not to.
  • Dark Is Evil: She's able to control shadows as part of her powers, and prominently dresses in dark colours save for her red Astral Dress (which is partially black, by the way). She's also completely bonkers as far as Spirits go.
  • Deer in the Headlights: When Efreet!Kotori charges her Angel to attack Kurumi, rather than efficiently dodge it, Kurumi instead asks her clones to shield her, even though moments earlier the same Angel cleaved through her clones with ease. Volume 16 reveals this was likely the result of the traumatic memory of killing the original Camael wielder, her best friend Sawa Yamauchi.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Her entire world shatters when she discovers she murdered her best friend, not even realizing it was her at first. She narrowly avoided Inversion by “rewinding” herself with Dalet.
  • Determinator: In Volume 16, she uses Vav over 200 times to avert Shido’s death. Her own clones point out that she clearly doesn’t just view Shido as prey anymore if she’s that determined to save him. Even Ellen feels a newfound respect for her after knowing about this.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: Kurumi has two, surprisingly enough. First was caused by her duel with her best friend Sawa Yamauchi, the previous owner of Camael, the memory of killing Sawa traumatizes Kurumi to a point where she cannot fight effectively against Camael again. The second one was given when she gave a secret "thank you kiss" to an unconscious Shido back then in Volume 4, as the kiss accidentally managed to seal Vav in Zafkiel. If Kurumi was able to utilize her full abilities against Kotori, the story would probably have ended in Volume 3 with her devouring Shido, and she would have a much easier time advancing the rest of her plans if she could use her Mental Time Travel.
  • Easily Forgiven: Played straight with Shido, who continuously treats her with kindness and insists there is some good in her. Subverted with the other Spirits.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: She's a dreadful mass murderer with long black hair and pale skin.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Her Astral Dress is inspired by Gothic Lolita fashion, with the crimson and black frills and all.
  • Enemy Mine: She helps Shido during Miku's arc, after the latter uses a Mind-Control Music on almost the entire cast, turning them all against him. She doesn't make it clear why she's helping him though, whether to repay him for stopping Kotori from killing her, or because It Amused Me. Volume 16 seems to imply the former case to be true.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: She might be a brutal killer, but she’s disgusted by how a group of thugs beat up a cat for no reason.
  • Every Proper Lady Should Curtsy: She often curtsies when she greets others.
  • Evil Is Hammy: The more evil she acts, she hammier she gets. It's almost like she likes to make a spectacle out of murdering people.
  • Evil Laugh: Quite a few times (it sounds like "Kihihihi!"), notably when she sets off a spacequake before her duel with Kotori in her Spirit form.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Aside from the white pupils generally seen in Spirits, her constantly-covered left eye is literally the face of a Victorian Pocket-Watch.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: While she's wearing her Astral Dress, her hair is longer on the left side than on the right, resembling the hands on a clock.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: Kurumi is remarkably polite, using the highly formal pronoun "watakushi" and addressing nearly everyone with the honorific "-san". This fits her elegant behavior (when she isn't in Ax-Crazy mode at least) and hints at a rich background. Volume 16 mentions that she was raised as the daughter of a rich family.
  • Freudian Excuse: She somehow ended up in another world and was attacked by a shadowy monster, and then saved by Mio Takmiya who reveals it's a spirit which is a destroyer of the world. Kurumi accepts Mio's offer to gain power to help her stop them, but eventually discovers what Spirits truly are when she discovers she murdered her best friend. Feeling she was used, she resolves to kill Mio so the Spirits will never appear in the world.
  • Friendly Enemy: It seems that Shidou's actions at the end of her arc has caused Kurumi to cease antagonizing Shidou and his group. And on a few occasions, she even goes out of her way to help Shido when he's in need. Despite this, she is clearly still after him.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Except to human beings... or at least the nastier side of humanity considering the people we've actually seen her kill are not exactly saints. Turns out she only hates the First Spirit (who might not even be human), and the ones who summoned the entity. It is also implied Kurumi sees other Spirits as unknown victims just like her.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She has a lower pair of pigtails in her casual attire, though it's more pronounced in her Astral Dress, with uneven length on each side of her head to represent the hour and minute hands on a clock.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Once she learns that the Spirits Mio was having her kill were all Once human like herself, and she had even just killed her best friend Sawa, Kurumi just barely avoided Inversion by using her Fourth Bullet to rewind her emotional state. Afterwards, she went from a Samaritan to the mass-murdering Well-Intentioned Extremist she is today.
  • Good Girl Gone Bad: Before she became a Spirit, Kurumi was a sweet girl who only wanted to do good. But then Mio tricked her into killing humans she had turned into monsters, including Kurumi's friend Sawa and Kurumi became an Ax-Crazy mass murderer so she can take revenge on Mio by murdering her in the past.
  • Guns Akimbo: Her Angel includes a flintlock pistol and a flintlock musket, representing the hour and minute hands of a clock. When using her special bullets, she’ll point the guns to the positions on her clock designating the time for the number of the bullet.
  • The Heavy: Anytime Kurumi appears onscreen you can be sure that she's going to modify the status quo, to drive the plot, to make some reveals about the Myth Arc and to somehow send the various other Spirits on the heroes way.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After Shido manages to reach out to her by Taking the Bullet for her, she (probably) undergoes this. It's not complete though. She reveals to Shido in Volume 16 why she can't let this happen fully.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Her long bangs cover her clock-like left eye when she's blending in with humans.
  • I Let You Win:
    • To Mana, constantly. When she gets serious, Mana doesn't stand a chance.
    • In the Spirit battle royale, Yoshino manages to make her expend enough Spirit power that she couldn’t use Nia's Angel or Astral Dress anymore, and she considers this her loss despite still being conscious with her original Astral Dress and Zafkiel active. Turns out that she wanted to conserve power to reverse the modifications to Mana's body that had shortened her lifespan.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: She repeatedly states that she will one day "eat" Shido. Since she's after Spirit energy, she (probably) doesn't mean that literally.
  • Indirect Kiss: Kurumi and Shidou share one in the Date-A-Live Drama CD, when Shidou gives Kurumi some of the drink he's already had. Kurumi takes note of it.
Kurumi: Ufufu...this makes it...an indirect kiss, right?
  • Inhuman Eye Concealers: Since her left eye is a golden clock, she hid it with a medical eyepatch until she got embarrassed about it, then started using her hair bangs to cover it.
  • Kick the Dog: One of her few unambiguously evil acts was attempting to destroy Raizen High School with a spacequake just to prove to Shido how irredeemable she was.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Kurumi's soft spot for cats is one of the few traits that show she isn't an absolute monster.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Shido had initally seen Spirits as unfortunate victims of circumstances who were hunted down for Spacequakes outside of their control, so it was quite traumatizing for him to encounter a Spirit who not only directly, but gleefully, kills people.
  • Lecherous Licking: In the anime, she licks her fingers while commenting on how "delicious" Origami looks (in the novels, she outright licked Origami). Later, she licks Shido when he gets a small wound on his cheek and says that a little spit will fix it.
  • Leitmotif: Kurumi is the first character in the whole series that had a OST for her own character. Her main soundtrack is Rhapsody Rage.
    • She also has a secondary theme song that serves as the theme song of her Angel Zafkiel.
  • Life Drinker: In order to fuel her time-based powers, Kurumi uses "City of Devouring Time", a dark barrier that slowly consumes the lifespan/Reiryoku within its radius. The consumption rate is inversely proportional to the size of the barrier, as displayed in Volume 10 when Kurumi uses a concentrated version of it on Origami and Shido to quickly drain their Reiryoku for Time Travel.
  • Literal Split Personality: In the Date A Live Fragment: Date A Bullet 2 spin-off, she has a conversation with her own Inverted self, the White Queen.
  • Love Epiphany: After Shido gets killed by Ellen in the first loop of Volume 16, Kurumi kisses his dead body and this unseals her Vav bullet. Kurumi finally realizes that the real reason Vav was sealed was because she kissed Shido as thanks for protecting her from Kotori and he made her fall in love with him a little at that time.
  • Magical Eye: Her left eye indicates her remaining lifespan. The hands move counter-clockwise when she is absorbing lifespan, and every time she uses her time powers it will move clockwise at high speed. Curiously, even when she is doing nothing her eye ticks, although to what direction is unknown.
  • Meaningful Name: The "kuru" in her given name means "crazy". The "toki" in her surname means "time".
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Her codename is Nightmare for a good reason.
  • New Transfer Student: At the start of Volume 3, she infiltrates Shido's high school through unexplained methods in order to get closer to him.
  • Nothing Nice About Sugar and Spice: Kurumi is very ladylike, wears a frilly dress, and is the Spirit with the largest body count.
  • Numerical Theme Naming: Aside from the general number naming for each Spirit's Sephira, the names of her Bullets are 1 to 12 using Hebrew numbers.note
  • Old Shame: In the past, she wore an eyepatch to obscure her obviously unnatural left eye. Now, she looks back on the eyepatch with shame and has settled on using her hair to hide her eye instead.
  • Older Than They Look: She appears to be 17 years old, but when Shido encounters the Kurumi from five years ago, she appears to be the same age. As her friend Sawa's death was over 20 years ago, this would make her actual age at least 37.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: After Shido saved her from Kotori, she ends up protecting him several times, though she insists that her goal of eating him hasn't changed and she simply doesn't want him to die before then. By Volume 16, when she runs herself ragged in a Mental Time Travel "Groundhog Day" Loop to save Shido's life from DEM, even her own clones are starting to question if that's truly all he means to her.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: She brutally murders would-be rapists and animal abusers in her arc.
  • Pet the Dog: Quite considerate for a mass murdering Spirit who claims she is "beyond redemption".
    • She has a soft spot for animals, particularly cats. The only time we see her killing because she wants to (and not to restore her powers) is when she kills a bunch of kids abusing a kitten.
    • In volume 10, when Origami requests to time travel back five years, Kurumi first jokes about the reasons, but empathizes with her desire to fix her past and ultimately acquiesces with the condition that Origami use her own Reiryoku to power the time travel, reasoning it will be a good test for the time travel.
  • The Plan: She wants to gather enough power to travel back 30 years into the past and kill the First Spirit, and she needs the power sealed within Shido to accomplish this. After meeting Nia in Volume 13, she changes the plan after learning she won't be able to kill the First Spirit to simply preventing it's summon into the world. Her fight with Kotori and Shido's act of trying to protect her also makes her decide to simply steal his spirit power in Volume 16 and keep him alive, rather than actually eat him like she originally intended.
  • Polite Villains, Rude Heroes: Had this dynamic with Bete in the crossover campaign, Ais Catastrophe in Memoria Freese. With her being the polite villainess to his rude hero.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: Her school uniform comes with black tights to complement her polite speech.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Kurumi is stunningly beautiful, with midnight black hair, fair skin compared to pearls as well as a pair of alluring heterochromatic eyes.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Kurumi is a black-haired, (partially) red-eyed girl whose Astral Dress is made out of crimson and black frills, and she's the most murderous of the Spirits.
  • Red Baron: Her Angel Zafkiel has "Emperor of Time" as its title. She herself has gained the title "Worst Spirit" for her body count.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her right eye is red and she's one of the deadliest Spirits in existence.
  • Rescue Romance: Kurumi starts to develop feelings for Shido after he protects her from Kotori's Spirit form.
  • Self-Duplication: She can create clones that have all her experiences, memories and abilities. These clones are kept in her shadows' "storage half", and can be brought out en masse at Kurumi's behest. When still in Kurumi's shadow, the clones can also restrain targets by taking on the form of long white hands with a red outlining. The clones are often used for reconnaissance, and can deliver information verbally or directly convey it to the original Kurumi's head, though the latter method requires <Yud> and risks overloading her with too much information at once.
  • Sex for Services: After using Yud to share her past with Shido, she strips down and offers him "everything except her Reiryoku", believing that it's the most she can give in exchange for his life before she changes history to undo his death. The Nibelcole jump in before Shido can make his choice.
  • Sexophone: Of the trumpet variety; her leitmotif, "Portrait", plays whenever she enters a room or starts acting seductive.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Her Astral Dress is almost entirely backless.
  • Shadow Walker: She can hop in and out of her shadow, which serves as both a storage space and a Life Drinker "stomach".
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Enjoys teasing Shido, like when she cheerfully flashes her panties at his request (Kotori accidentally fed him the wrong line).
  • She's Back: She returns to Raizen High one month after Mukuro is finally sealed, and it seems she intends to continue what she started in Volume 16 where she's the main focus.
  • Slasher Smile: Most of her smiles are of the murderous variety. Comes with being Ax-Crazy.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: She always speaks in a polite and serene tone, even when she's brutally killing people.
  • Squishy Wizard: She has very high reiryoku, but she's not that strong, durable or fast (without the assistance of her First Bullet). As broken as a Time Master is on paper, she simply couldn't match up to Kotori's regeneration and (literal) firepower, and only survived because of Shido.
  • Start of Darkness: When Mio's actions cause her to murder her best friend Sawa Yamauchi against her will, Kurumi decides that she needs to change the past so she can kill her, later make sure she's never able to be summoned into the world.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Considering that Kurumi is a Time Master on top of Superpower Lottery, it's no guess as to why she still hasn't been sealed by Shido. He would be unstoppable if he has her powers. When it looks like Shido is about to seal the deal for good at the end of Volume 17, Mio interferes with the process and kills Kurumi to prevent Shido from gaining all of her powers. This move turns out to be ineffective in the end with Shido using Vav to mentally time travel back in time with the plan of stopping Mio before she started her killing plan.
  • Sultry Bangs: She hides her left eye with her hair when she's in her civilian disguise, which befits her sophisticated and flirtatious demeanor.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Her left eye is a gold clock that spins clockwise while using her powers and counterclockwise while absorbing others' lifespan.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Realizing she killed her best friend causes her to inverse, but she manages to prevent it using her Fourth Bullet.
  • Superpower Lottery: She is the first Spirit shown to have two unrelated domains of powers (Shadow and Time). Even though her time powers consume enough lifespan for it to threaten her life, she can mitigate that by draining others of theirs. As Kurumi herself puts it, when she gets serious, "any power is meaningless." Only Kotori at her unsealed state manages to send Kurumi to the curb, and this was likely caused by Kurumi's personal weakness against Kotori's Angel.
    • Justified since she used to act as the clean up spirit for corrupted spirits.
  • The Tease: She really likes teasing Shido. Seems to be part of the reason she hasn't eaten him yet. She kicks this up a notch in the Miku arc, even going so far as to lick his cheeks and playfully nibble on his ear.
  • Temporal Duplication: Using Zafkiel's Time Master powers, she can make temporal clones of herself.
  • Through His Stomach: In her second arc, Kurumi and Shido try to earn each other's affection by exchanging their bento lunches. Since Shido usually does all the cooking himself, Kurumi's tactic is effective.
  • Time Loop Fatigue: She puts herself into a loop, trying and failing to save Shido from DEM's assaults 204 times'. While her time reserves reset on each trip, it gradually wears down on her mind, ultimately fainting in the middle of her date with Shido.
  • Time Master: Although used more often, this ability is actually stated by the novels to be her secondary ability, where she shoots bullets of varying effects. To activate these, she has to summon Zafkiel, and then position her guns in front of the number she wants to use. The magnitude and/or the duration of each bullet's effects are determined by the amount of lifespan she spends on each shot.
    • Super-Speed: Aleph. It accelerates the time of anything it hits, including herself for that matter. Bet does the opposite, slowing things down instead.
    • Rapid Aging: Gimmel. It causes an object or person she shoots to age.
    • Healing Factor: Dalet. It allows to physically rewind time of objects she hits, allowing her to undo any damage provided she can still shoot the gun. However, while it can reverse any physical ailment (even her own Inversion), she can't use it to bring back someone who's died.
    • Seers: Hei. It lets Kurumi see a glimpse of the future.
    • Mental Time Travel: Vav. It allows Kurumi to send someone's consciousness into the past. How far can the subject go is determined by the lifespan she spends, but the subject will stay in the past indefinitely, and both her mana and her clones would reset in number, effectively functioning as a Reset Button for the target. This does put a strain on the target's mind, however. This bullet was accidentally sealed in volume 4 and initially unable to be used, but it recovers after Kurumi kisses Shido's corpse and she becomes able to use Vav again.
    • Time Stands Still: Zayin. Objects it hits will freeze in time.
    • Doppelgänger Attack: Het. It allows her to use her past memories as clones, allowing her to spy and gather information safely, and if they are killed, their memories return to the original. However, they lack the original's 12 Bullet powers, and is noted to be far less powerful than Kurumi herself, although they do retain the ability to use guns, manipulate shadows, as well as summoning City of Devouring Time and spacequakes.
    • Telepathy: Tet. Targets shot will share their senses with Kurumi when sent to other timelines. Used in conjunction with Yod Bet.
    • Pensieve Flashback: Yud. It allows her to see the past of objects she has hit, restore her own memory, or pass memory onto others. This might be the reason she's avoided gaining Easy Amnesia like the other spirits.
    • Time Travel: Yud Aleph sends someone to the future, while Yud Bet, sends someone to the past. The amount of lifespan Kurumi spends will determine how far can the target go throughout the timeline as well as how long can they remain there, targets will be forcibly moved back after a certain amount of time has passed. Any changes made upon the world will not be remembered except by the ones who are shot by the bullet, as well as Kurumi herself.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Kurumi is an ally to Shido sometimes, but she's way more brutal and malevolent than anyone in his team.
  • Trauma Button: Kotori's Angel, or at least its berserk state, is likely this for Kurumi as her best friend (whom she killed) Sawa Yamauchi was the original wielder of Camael.
  • Tsundere: Despite her obvious affection for Shido, Kurumi doesn't like to admit she wants him for anything more than his power. She even fires a bullet at her own clone for confessing her feelings for Shido on her behalf. Kurumi's own clone is amused by Kurumi going tsun-tsun because of her reluctance to admit she does have strong feelings for Shido.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Using Zafkiel to send Origami back in time to kill the murderer of her parents leads to the events of the latter inversing and destroying the world in the previous timeline. She is not happy in regards to this realization.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Mio tricked her into killing corrupted Spirits by convincing her she was protecting the world from monsters of Mio's own creation.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Before becoming a Spirit, she had a strong sense of justice and lamented the inequality in the world, seeking to help out those in need. Mio used this in order to recruit her in her mission to hunt down Spirits.
  • Viler New Villain: While Tohka only attacked others in self-defense and Yoshino wouldn't hurt a fly, Kurumi is the first Spirit who maliciously kills people. Once she makes her appearance, civilians die en masse, and none of the protagonists are able to talk her out of it. It takes a fully unsealed Spirit to take her down and Kurumi might not have lost if said Spirit's Angel was not her Trauma Button.
  • Villainesses Want Heroes: For most of the series, Kurumi's goal is devouring Shido to steal his power. Despite knowing falling in love with him will give him the ability to seal her powers, she ends up doing so anyway because of his kind heart.
  • Villainous Rescue:
    • In Volume 7/Season 2, even if it's for her own agenda, she saves Shido from Miku and provides the opportunity Shido needs to save Tohka from DEM and to help Miku from herself.
    • In Volume 16/Season 4, Kurumi saves Shido from DEM's assassins multiple times through a "Groundhog Day" Loop.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: She's the first Spirit that is against Shido trying to help her. On top of that, she also manages to prevent the other characters he's relied on up to that point from helping in their usual fashion.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She's killed 10,000 people to acquire enough time to travel back in time and prevent the first spacequake which claimed 150 million lives. Although, her intention is less about saving them and more about undoing the existence of Spirits.
  • When She Smiles: Her infrequent happy smiles are as sweet as any of Tohka's.
  • Wild Card: Almost on par with Phantom at this trope. Although villainous at first, Kurumi seems to have a knack in helping people when they are at their lowest (as with Shidou and Origami, later). Her motivations are unclear, and while she seems to follow Phantom's directions at first, it's eventually clear that her goal to kill the First Spirit isn't Phantom's orders and in fact Kurumi isn't even on Phantom's side. (as she sends her clones to observe the mysterious entity).
  • The Worf Effect: Gets hit hard with this at the beginning of Volume 4 (Episode 10 of the first season) just to show that her powers aren't up to snuff in the face of Kotori's powers. Volume 16 however implies this was actually a case of Worf Had the Flu, as her backstory reveals Kurumi has killed one of Camael's previous owners before, and was traumatized by the encounter.
  • Yandere: Kurumi eagerly speaks of "becoming one" with Shido and tries to kill him with the same excitement. Lampshaded by the author.

    Kotori Itsuka

Kotori Itsuka

Although we see her earlier than the others, she is only revealed to be a Spirit in Volume 4, as the fourth Spirit introduced. See her entry on the Itsuka Siblings page.

    Yamai

Yamai

Code name: "Berserk"

Angel: Raphael (Bow)

Astral Dress: Elohim Tzabaoth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yamai_twins.png
Left: Kaguya. Right: Yuzuru

Twin Spirits who appear in Volume 5. They were originally one entity, but for reasons unknown got split into two: Kaguya and Yuzuru. These 2 have very distinctive personalities, and the original personality is gone. They cause a storm every time they appear.

The duo have been fighting 99 times to determine who is the real Yamai, with 25 wins each and 49 draws. On seeing Shido, they decided that their 100th and final battle will be to see who can seduce Shido first.

The twins share the following tropes:

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: They initially appear to hate one another, but they both want the other to live to the point they want to sacrifice themselves, and are happy when Shido finds another way. Some of their interactions even seem more like lovers than sisters.
  • Birds of a Feather: They each develop a platonic version during their arc. Kaguya became fast friends with her "kinsman" Tohka because she was the only one who took her delusions of grandeur seriously, while Yuzuru started admiring "Master" Origami for giving her advice on seduction (both are also very emotionally reserved).
  • Blow You Away: Both have control over wind, and are introduced by brewing a hurricane when fighting over who's the real Yamai for the 100th time.
  • Braids of Action: They both have braids only Kaguya has hers wrapped in a bun and Yuzuru has hers in a ponytail.
  • Chained by Fashion: Their Astral Dresses have manacles on one leg and one arm, with broken chains. The positioning shows that they were originally chained to each other.
  • Clingy Jealous Girls: In their introduction arc, Kaguya and Yuzuru literally cling to Shido's arms and fight with each other over his attention to make him choose which of them is his favorite. They grow out of it by the end of the arc, as both girls decide none of them deserves Shido more than the other. In the following arcs, they're perfectly fine with Shido spending time with them separately or dating other Spirits.
  • Combination Attack: They can do these in battle. Or when playing beach volleyball. Or seducing Shido. Also, this is how they manifest the bow El Kanaph, which is the true form of their Angel. They pull one off with Yoshino in book 9, blowing away an AST team that dropped their territories to avoid Yoshino freezing them.
  • Death of Personality: They explain to Shido that the original Yamai's consciousness is gone, and they're competing over who should have control when they remerge while the loser will essentially disappear. The original Yamai was actually a human girl who received a Sephira Crystal as she was dying from getting run over, but her vanishing twin absorbed in utero resulted in two Spirits from the same Crystal. The sisters' Fusion Dance into Yamai Kamazachi is actually a mixture of their consciousness, and while they regain their memories of their past life, the original Yamai's consciousness is in fact dead and gone, similar to Shido with his previous life as Shinji.
  • Dressed Like a Dominatrix: Their Astral Dresses wouldn't look out of place with a dominatrix, as they're form-fitting leather outfits that leave little to the imagination, and come with opera gloves, thigh-high boots, chokers, and chains.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: They briefly show up in the OVA, playing Breakout in the arcade. Amusingly enough, both are wearing their Astral Dresses.
  • Emergency Transformation: Kazamachi was run over saving a child. When she was dying, Mio transformed her into a Spirit, resulting in Kazamachi being revived as the Yamai twins.
  • Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: Kaguya is outspoken and uses exaggerated gestures in an attempt to sound cool, while Yuzuru is soft-spoken and has a robot-like speech pattern.
  • Fusion Dance: In order to fight Beast, Kaguya and Yuzuru fuse together to become the original Kazamachi Yamai. They later defused to avoid being hugged by Miku..
  • The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: The relationship between the twins became this after Yamai split in two, with each sister ostensibly trying to prove their superiority and trash-talking the other. The war ends after they are sealed.
  • Ham-to-Ham Combat: They engage in this when they first appear before Shido episode 2 of season 2.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Both girls privately tell Shido to pick the other one in episode 3 of season 2, because they care deeply about the other girl, and want them to live on and sacrifice their own body/Spirit in the process. Fortunately Shido offers them a third option, and his decision allows both of them to survive.
  • Hesitant Sacrifice: After Shido tells them he can save both, they both tearfully reveal to each other they not only don't want to die, but don't want to lose each other either.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: The Yamai Twins' Astral Dresses are not identical. In civilian clothes, they tend to wear opposite colors or mirror each other until eventually developing their own styles. Yuzuru has a ponytail and Kaguya doesn't. Kaguya is slightly taller than Yuzuru. And much to Kaguya's chagrin, Yuzuru has larger breasts than her.
  • The Immodest Orgasm: They make very loud and erotic noises when Shido applies suntan lotion on them at the beach.
  • Incest Subtext: The affection they have for each other occasionally slips into Twincest subtext. It's almost always lampshaded and Played for Laughs, though.
  • Lightning Bruisers: The Ratatoskr data book gives them very high stats all around (with the highest being their agility), with the exception being intelligence (though nowhere as low as Tohka). This is quite appropriate for their threat level (AAA). It's also noted their Astral Dress doesn't give them much defense, but also that it wouldn't matter given their power over the wind. Yamai Kazamachi combines their Angels for even more power, and her speed is explicitly portrayed as supersonic.
  • Literal Split Personality: They're originally halves of the same Spirit. While the reveal that all of the Spirits were all formerly human and shared Easy Amnesia had put this in doubt, said doubt was erased entirely when we finally see Kazamachi, the original Yamai.
  • Lovely Angels: Weapons notwithstanding, they're almost always fighting together after they join Shido's harem.
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: Their Angel's true form is that of a bow, which uses Kaguya's El Re'em (lance) as a gigantic arrow, and Yuzuru's El Nahash (chain) as the bowstring. The actual bow is formed from both twins' unique wing.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Their Astral Dresses are very revealing, and they're properly introduced in the middle of a Beach Episode arc. Naturally, they get the lion's share of volume 5's fanservice.
  • New Transfer Students: They join Shido's school (though they're not in his class) in the middle of Volume 5, right in the middle of a field trip. Naturally, Reine has to make up an explanation to Tamae on the spot.
  • Ojou Ringlets: They both got them and they are really long. Probably because they look like cyclones of course.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When they celebrate after teaming up to score a point, the two look quite happy gazing at each other despite having shown hatred for each other prior to this. Shortly after they each separately have a private conversation with Shido, revealing they actually care about the other more than they care about themselves.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Kaguya is brash and hotheaded, while Yuzuru is calm and speaks in Terse Talking, not unlike a certain twins with the same illustrator.
  • Power Gives You Wings: They each gain one wing when they manifest their Angels. These two wings form the two limbs of their Angel's actual form, a bow. Yamai Kazamachi has both wings.
  • Power Incontinence: A storm appears whenever they use their powers.
  • Red Baron: One for their Angel Raphael, "Hurricane Knight"
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Kaguya is the energetic, loud Red and Yuzuru is the calm, quiet Blue. Their Astral Dresses, to an extent, are coloured in a similar manner; Kaguya's is purple and Yuzuru's is blue.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: As Yamai Kazamachi, their Astral Dress gains a very long scarf.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girls: Both of them are quite forward in their attempt to seduce Shido.
  • Sibling Triangle: The twins try to make Shido fall in love with them and the one he chooses will become the true Yamai Spirit while the other will disappear. However, Shido refuses to choose only one of them and the twins realize they don't want the other to disappear, so they agree to let Shido seal their powers and join his Battle Harem.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Yamai Kazamachi stands at an impressive 180cm (5'11") with even larger breasts than Yuzuru, though she notes that her original human incarnation was much shorter and flatter.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: Kaguya's name has "arrow" and Yuzuru's has "bowstring", which indicates what role their individual Angels serve in Raphael's combined bow form. The original Yamai's name, Kazamachi, contains "wind".
  • Stripperiffic: Their Astral Dresses really stretch the definition, given they bare so much skin by exposing their shoulders, some of their breasts, midriffs and thighs.
  • Theme Twin Naming: The twins' names refer to a bow and arrow. Kaguya's name contains the kanji for "arrow" and Yuzuru's name contains the kanji for "bowstring".
  • Threesome Subtext: They adore each other just as much as both adore Shido. They're still not about to share him with the other girls if they can help it.

Kaguya Yamai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaguya_astral_dress.png

The outgoing and outspoken Yamai twin.

  • Abnormal Ammo: Her lance, El Re'em, is actually used in the twin's combined attack as a massive arrow that is able to pierce through the Arbatel's Deflector Shields and hull.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: She intentionally uses on a haughty archaic tone to sound mystic, though she finds herself forgetting to do so at times, especially when Yuzuru's mocking her.
  • Chuunibyou: While she is supernatural as a Spirit, her exaggerated speeches like forming a "baptism of darkness with her kinsman" (befriending Tohka) display an overactive imagination. Yuzuru occasionally needs to "translate" it into conventional vocubulary.
  • Cleavage Window: Her Astral Dress has an opening that shows off her cleavage.
  • Genki Girl: She's described as outgoing and outspoken, to the point of being childish at times.
  • Gratuitous German: She likes dressing things up with random German, like threatening to stab Yuzuru and Shido with her Sturm (later Schatten) Lanze, and calling her hand protector in bowling a Fegefeuer Gauntlet. The Yamais' short story for Ratatoskr's Daily Observations reveals that she keeps a book of foreign words to spice up her attack names, with the German section underlined.
  • Jousting Lance: Raphael El Re'em, which is depicted in the anime which is a big, red lance. It's actually a giant arrow.
  • Large Ham: On top of being hotheaded, she uses a very dramatic and nearly unrealistic vocabulary, in contrast to the calmer Yuzuru. It's later revealed that she's just acting; she believes being a Spirit is "super awesome", therefore she must act appropriately. After she forgets to use it twice when talking with Shido, she stops using the unique vocabulary, but keeps everything else.
Kaguya: "I'm the Kama Sutra incarnate!"
  • Petite Pride: While the twins' cup sizes aren't that much different from each other, when Yuzuru tries to invoke the Buxom Beauty Standard in order to win over Shido, Kaguya is quick to answer that sacks of lard can't even begin to compare with her own slender body.
  • Showgirl Skirt: She wears a half skirt around her waist which drops to the knees and opens around her thighs.
  • Tareme Eyes: Her eyes are wide and round, contrasting Yuzuru's Tsurime Eyes and representing her role as the more emotive twin.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuzuru_astral_dress.png

The calm and collected Yamai twin.

  • Badass Cape: Her Astral Dress has a small cape.
  • Big-Breast Pride: While the twins' cup size aren't that much different from each other, she invokes this in regards to fighting over Shido against Kaguya, claiming that large breasts are a must. The latter is quick to say the contrary.
  • Chain Pain: Her weapon El Nahash is a very long chain, which the story calls a pendulum. It's the bowstring of the Angel's actual form.
  • Deadpan Snarker: For all her calm behaviour, she sure likes to throw harsh insults at Kaguya with a straight face.
  • Defiled Forever: Her reaction when Shido seals the twins' powers and causes their Astral Dresses to disappear.
Yuzuru: Shedding tears. Yuzuru can't become a bride anymore.
  • Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: Her listless, half-opened eyes are noted as one of the differences between her and the more lively Kaguya.
  • Dull Surprise: Her response to a human (Shido) interrupting their duel.
Yuzuru: Wonder. Yuzuru cannot contain her surprise.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Yuzuru is coolheaded and stoic, but has a very sweet side that she only shows to Kaguya and Shido, her two most important people.
  • Terse Talker: She almost always talks in this manner, uttering a word expressing the nature of her phrase beforehand. The only time she breaks this is near the end of Volume 5 when she and Kaguya are confessing to each other about not wanting to die and stay with each other, where she tries to do this but is too emotionally pent-up to say the word fully.
  • Third-Person Person: Unlike Kaguya, she always refers to herself as "Yuzuru".
  • Tsurime Eyes: She has narrow eyes, contrasting Kaguya's Tareme Eyes and representing her role as the less emotive twin.
  • Underboobs: Her Astral Dress reveals the underside of her breasts.

    Miku Izayoi

Miku Izayoi

Voiced by: Minori Chihara (Japanese), Jad Saxton (English), Montserrat Mendoza (Latin-American Spanish)

Code name: "Diva"

Angel: Gabriel (Organ)

Astral Dress: Shaddai El Chai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miku_izayoi_astral_dress.png

First appears in Volume 6. She is shown to be an Idol Singer, with her Spirit power being a magic voice. Hates guys a lot (girls don't fare much better; she sees them only as slaves fit to serve her), so Shido had to crossdress just to approach her. It works; Miku ends up becoming really fond of "Shiori".

  • Abhorrent Admirer: She's not unattractive by any means, but her overt lust toward other girls (especially Natsumi) is often met with repulsion.
  • Affectionate Nickname: After falling for Shido, she calls him "Darling" in all subsequent encounters. The rest of the girls are not amused.
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: The novels often emphasise how pleasant her voice sounds, even without the use of her Angel.
  • Big Fancy House: Miku's house is depicted as a large mansion in both the anime and the movie.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: While she Does Not Like Men in her introduction, she actually has a low opinion of humanity in general, so she seems friendly (and often flirtatious) toward girls while actually treating them like dolls.
  • Broken Bird: Like Kotori, she was originally a regular human girl. An up and coming idol until she turned down a producer's offer to have sex, and he ruins her career out of spite. Her attempt to restart her singing career fails when she loses her voice. She considers suicide, but is stopped when Phantom shows up to make her a Spirit. This restores her voice and grants her the ability to manipulate people with it, which she uses to become more popular than ever.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Subverted. She grew up believing that her voice was all that she was worth and became an idol to sing for her fans, so when she lost it from all the stress of slander, she felt that she'd lost all value in life. Fortunately for her, Phantom gave her a Compelling Voice so she could pursue a career as an idol once more.
  • Career Resurrection: In-universe, after Phantom gave her a magic voice she returns to being an Idol Singer, this time using her real name instead of Tsukino Yoimachi.
  • Compelling Voice: She's able to make people do what she wants with her voice.
  • Cosmic Motifs: The moon, which is associated with the 9th Sephira Yesod. Her Astral Dress gives her a crescent moon hair clip and earrings, and her former stage name Tsukino contained "moon" (tsuki).
  • Crotch-Grab Sex Check: She finds out "Shiori" is really Shido when she pokes his crotch and feels something that a girl shouldn't have.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: It's shown in a Troubled Backstory Flashback that Miku was a rising idol in Japan. Then, her producer ruined her career after she rejected his advances. If that wasn't bad enough, she lost her singing abilities after attempting to restart her career, nearly driving her to suicide before Phantom gave her powers.
  • Deal with the Devil: Losing her status and her voice is what sends her across the Despair Event Horizon and causes Phantom to offer to make her the Spirit Diva.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She's initially distrustful of anyone, especially towards men. But Shido pulls a Big Damn Heroes moment to rescue Miku at the end of Volume 7, and this is one of the reasons why she has a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Despair Event Horizon: She seriously considered suicide after falling out show biz and losing her voice while attempting to restart her singing career. Only Phantom's appearance and her transformation into Spirit Diva prevents it.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Her first interaction with Shido has her letting him know just how much she hates him... all while having a gentle smile on her face. Only in the text though; the illustration shows her having a disgusted look.
  • Does Not Like Men: She harbors a strong hatred towards men, due to having been betrayed by her male producer and male fans. She eventually warms up to Shido during Volume 7, especially after her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: When Shido tells her of his intentions to rescue Tohka, she initially thinks he's talking about how others can fend for themselves, not knowing that Shido was talking about heroic qualities like morality and self-sacrifice. This is one of the reasons she has a Heel–Face Turn later on.
  • Evil Diva: She made her debut as a mysterious, nationwide popular idol who broke into stardom with her captivating voice without appearing in person. She turns out to be a Spirit that Does Not Like Men with a sociopathic personality who uses Mind-Control Music to enslave the girls that she takes fancy on, until she mellows out from her newfound trust in Shido.
  • Face Death with Dignity: She decides to resign herself to being killed by Inverse Tohka after using up all of her power... up until Shido pulls his Big Damn Heroes moment.
  • Famed In-Story: Comes with being an Idol Singer, to the point that Tonomachi was shocked Shido never heard of her prior to the volume she was introduced in.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Her politeness is to mask her sinister nature. Although she eventually becomes a better person after being influenced by Shido.
  • Flower Motifs: Her debut novel is titled "Miku Lily", and her Astral Dress includes them on her choker and hairpiece. Lily translates to "Yuri" in Japanese, fitting for an admittedly downplayed lesbian like her.
  • Freudian Excuse: Her male producer ruined her career as Tsukino Yoimachi, and her mostly male fans believed the rumors and turned against her. It's no wonder she distrusts people, especially men such as Shido. At least up until the latter rescues her from Inverse Tohka towards the end of volume 7.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: She went from an up-and-coming idol singer to a Spirit and an Evil Diva to boot.
  • Giant Poofy Sleeves: Her Astral Dress has pronounced shoulders.
  • The Glomp: She gives one to Shido after pulling a Heel–Face Turn. Later volumes have her attempting to do this to the fellow Spirits, especially Tohka and Natsumi.
  • Good Girl Gone Bad: Miku used to be a normal idol who just wanted to make people happy with her songs. Then she underwent a change in temperament after her producer ruined her career and Phantom transformed her into a Spirit at the cost of falling to the dark side.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Once she's finally won over by Shido's heroism and selflessness, Miku becomes remorseful for brainwashing everyone and changes for the better, starting by allowing Shido to seal her powers and becoming one of his main allies.
  • Hime Cut: She's a gorgeous Idol Singer with blunt bangs, cheek-length sidelocks, and waist-length hair.
  • Idol Singer: She works as a very famous and popular idol singer.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: At first, she hates all men and only feels attracted to cute girls. After Shido risks his life to protect her, Miku decides to make an exception for him and joins his Battle Harem.
Shido: D-Darling?! What are you...? I thought you hated men!
    Miku: You're special, Darling.
  • I Love You Because I Can't Control You: When she tells "Shiori" that she can make the world love her if she chooses to, he replies that he would hate her even more, because her power doesn't work on him. This causes her to tell him that she only wants him more now because of that. It's her subconscious way of wanting someone to appreciate her as normal person.
  • I'm Taking Her Home with Me!: She's stated to do this with girls she particularly adores, hence Shido crossdressing to get the opportunity.
  • Important Hair Accessory: No matter her clothes, there's always at least a small flower-shaped hair clip in her hair. Her Astral Dress adds a big crescent moon to the clip, as well as what appears to be white lilies. In Volume 8, her removing of said clip so Shido would have something to remember her with if she disappeared gives him the final clue for identifying who Natsumi disguised herself as.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Even after proclaiming her love for Shido, she flirts with the straight (or, at the very least, only interested in Shido) other members of Shido's harem (Tohka and Natsumi in particular).
  • It's All About Me: At first, her intentional spacequakes and mind-control over others begins and ends with her ego. This is highlighted when Shido tells Miku of her intentions to rescue Tohka towards the end of Volume 7. Fortunately, Miku gets better after her Heel–Face Turn.
  • I Was Just Passing Through: She comes up with several excuses for why she chooses to help Shido rescue Tohka and fight Inverse Tohka.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: She goes from agonizing over her producer ruining her career and losing her voice to an Evil Diva who can mind-control other spirits without a problem.
  • Lack of Empathy: She's introduced as a a villainous diva, to the point where she casually says that any potential victim of her intentional spacequakes should be happy to die for her. It was enough to make "Shiori" openly proclaim that he hates her, despite it being counterproductive to his goal of making her fall for him.
  • Like a God to Me: She addressed Phantom as god during the few times she mentioned about Phantom. Considering that Phantom had saved Miku at the brink of her suicidal depression by restoring her lost voice with a Compelling Voice, she has a good reason for that.
  • Logical Weakness: Her voice won't be able to brainwash someone if they can't hear it. Likewise, since her powers comes from her vocal chords, she would be rendered helpless if her mouth is covered, as shown when one of Kurumi's clone dragged Miku into the shadow during their battle.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: She sexually harasses women who fit her type.
  • Love Redeems: Falling in love with Shido causes her to finally regret her villainous actions. She willingly kisses him to seal her Spirit powers and only uses them to help Shido from then on.
  • Magic Idol Singer: Miku was originally a normal idol until she lost fame because of an scandal and the stress caused her to lose her voice. Phantom turned her into a Spirit so she could gain back her voice, in addition of Magic Music powers that allow her to mind control people and produce soundwaves.
  • Magic Music: Her Spirit powers grant her power over anything related to sound, and given her tenure as an idol, she prominently uses her music to her advantage.
  • Meaningful Name: She's a pop star with the same first name as Hatsune Miku.
  • Mind-Control Music: She has an organ that she can use to to brainwash people with. It doesn't work on everyone however, those immune include unsealed Spirits, Shido and Ellen.
  • Musical Assassin: Her Angel, Gabriel, takes the form of an organ that controls sound. Its abilities can be utilized via the organ, which is controlled with a keyboard, or through her own voice. For her convenience, Gabriel can also manifest as smaller organ pipes.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: After hearing her Freudian Excuse, Shido comes to the conclusion that her treating humans like toys is not out of a superiority complex, but fear that she'll be betrayed again like with her previous fanbase.
  • Nice Girl: While she starts off as a total Jerkass, she eventually develops into a much nicer person thanks to Shido's influence.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: She loves trying to grab, cuddle up with, hug, and kiss Shido and her fellow spirits, which none of them are appreciative of. She even cuddles up with Natsumi while both of them are asleep, thanks to Miku sleepwalking and once grabbed Tohka's boobs from behind in the light novels.
  • Oh, Crap!: Miku has a moment of terror when she realizes that Shiori isn't a girl after all.
  • Onee-sama: The girls from her One-Gender School call her "Onee-sama", showing that she's highly popular and respected by her schoolmates.
  • Psycho Lesbian: She's introduced as a domineering schoolgirl lesbian with the intent on making "Shiori" hers, and is accompanied by several groupies that are controlled by her powers. Later volumes have her flirting with the other Spirits, particularly Tohka, though by that point she has become one of Shido's friends.
  • Red Baron: Her Angel Gabriel is referred to as "Army-Breaking Songstress"
  • Rescue Romance: After Shido rescues her from Inverse Tohka, Miku becomes smitten with him.
  • Seashell Bra: When Shido and the girls get transported to a dimension made of fairy tales, Miku gets turned into The Little Mermaid, complete with wearing seashells for a bra.
  • Serious Business: In the light novels, Miku tells Natsumi that the latter will have to pay royalties to her after Natsumi uses Haniel to replay one of her songs while Shido is trying to seal Origami. According to her, this is because an idol's privileges are very strict.
  • Sore Loser: She just can't accept losing to teamwork at first. When Raizen High wins over her, she uses her powers to manipulate everyone into capturing Shido for her.
  • Squishy Wizard: Her stats aside from reiryoku are all quite poor, and she often ends up supporting her comrades with her songs instead of fighting directly. In Volume 20, she reveals a new fighting style weaponizing Gabriel's pipes that she developed out of awareness of this.
  • Stage Name: Went by the stage name Tsukino Yoimachi, until her Break the Cutie moment. After gaining her Spirit powers, she returned to the stage under her true name.
  • Start of Darkness: She had a rough life after her producer ruined her career as Tsukino Yoimachi, but losing her voice and trying to reconnect her fans seems to have been the final straw.
  • Super-Scream: One of the basic applications of her powers has her simply making a shout to knock her opponents flat, or even outright block incoming attacks.
  • The Tease: She openly flirts with cute girls (or Shido).
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Miku has one when she has exhausted the last of her powers against Inverse Form Tohka. When her opponent prepares to finish her, she forces a laugh and resigns herself to an imminent death... then Shido saves her and she subsequently pulls a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: She eventually becomes a nicer person towards the end of Volume 7 after Shido rescues her from Inverse Tohka.
  • Tsundere: She briefly becomes a Harsh (Tsun) Type during the climax of Volume 7, where she's distrustful toward Shido as a human male but is just curious enough about the lengths he'll go to save Tohka that she'll reluctantly help him out. After Shido protects her from Inverse Tohka, Miku stays firmly on the Dere side.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: By brainwashing Yoshino and the Yamai twins, she made it that much easier for Ellen to kidnap Tohka.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Her Troubled Backstory Flashback reveals that she was indeed a sweet kid until her producer ruined her career and Phantom appeared and granted her the power of a Spirit. The "Used to be part" goes away once she falls for Shido.
  • Wingding Eyes: Sports this in Date A Live Encore Volume 2 when saw Tohka in swimsuit during Tennou Festival, coupled with Perverted Drooling.

Click here to see her true form

A Spirit who makes her first appearance in Volume 8. Shido's the first non-AST person she met. Things were going well in his attempt to seal her powers. Then she sneezes, causing a flash of light, and her getting angry at him because he saw something about her that she didn't want him to see (he actually didn't get to see anything). She takes the form of Shido and makes advances on all his acquaintances in school before being found out by Tohka and Origami, after which she escapes and issues Shido photos of 12 people close to him, and challenges him to find her out before they all disappear.

  • Adaptational Attractiveness: Natsumi's true form in the novels is described as having a sickly appearance that the anime doesn't really convey.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: One bloody cut from a de-aged Ellen and Natsumi goes from smug to full blown panic begging someone for help in the span of a few seconds.
  • Bastard Angst: She grew up as an illegitimate child in an abusive household where her mother only used her for the secret hush money her father provided for them.
  • Bully Magnet: Before she became a Spirit, she went to a school where she was shunned and bullied for her dirty appearance.
  • Butt-Monkey: She's Miku's favorite target for sexual harassment.
  • Cosmic Motifs: Her Astral Dress is decorated with star ornaments.
  • Curly Hair Is Ugly: One of her biggest chagrins with her true form is that she thinks her curly hair is ugly. She uses her transformation powers to make her hair look straight and silky.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Green hair with green eyes.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She gets really close to Yoshino starting by Volume 10, even getting herself flustered by saying she'd marry her, though how serious this remark was at the time isn't shown. Then in Volume 12, she mentions in her thoughts that Yoshino is a goddess.
  • Cute Witch: Her true form is that of a young girl around the same age as Yoshino, and wearing a witch's hat that's comically oversized for her.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was raised by an abusive mother who refused to feed her and would always belittle her for being ugly. After they lost their only source of income when her father died, Natsumi's mother demanded that she do anything including prostitution to make money for her. Natsumi replied that it was impossible since she was ugly just like her. This caused her mother to snap and begin choking Natsumi. If she haven't been turned into a Spirit, Natsumi would have been killed by her own mother.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: Initially, Natsumi uses her sexy adult form to make Shido praise her beauty and give her attention and care. When she accidentally lets him see her true form, she freaks out because she thinks he'll call her ugly, but once she realizes Shido and the other Spirits won't reject her for her appearance, she accepts to join the team.
  • Determinator: In Volume 13, she skips sleep to finish the book the Spirits are working on together so it will be ready to challenge Nia's book in sales. She declares that she wants to make herself useful and prove the value of their friendship.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: After she assumes Shido saw her true form, she impersonates him and starts making his friends disappear in order to make him feel true despair.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After she became a Spirit, Natsumi transformed her mother into a frog in retaliation for all the years of abuse she put her through.
  • Dual Age Modes: She uses her transformation powers to shift between her true child form and her sexy adult form.
  • Easily Forgiven: She's forgiven by Shido and the other Spirits when they rescue her from AST forces by the end of volume 9, despite her efforts trying to make Shido a Hero with Bad Publicity, spiriting away his loved ones, and turning the other Spirits into children. She's stunned at how quickly they're willing to let it all slide, but Shido simply says that other Spirits have put him through worse, and said Spirits admit that they're not in any place to judge her for causing trouble.
  • The Eeyore: She has a very negative mindset and is quick to assume that everyone hates her. Her self-esteem slightly improves after getting sealed, but she's still noted to have the weakest mental fortitude among the Spirits.
  • Emergency Transformation: She was given her powers to save her from being strangled to death by her mother.
  • Emotional Powers: Her powers activate according to her emotions, especially negative ones. After getting sealed, she needs to recall some of her worst memories to transform into her sexy adult mode.
  • Empathic Shapeshifter: The buxom form she initially adopts is actually a response to how she perceives the world after several visits on Earth in the past. Shido persuades her to grow out of it and stay true to herself, although she's not above using it to tease him and Kotori.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: In her true form, her Astral Dress has stockings of orange and purple stripes, with the right longer than the left one.
  • Flying Broom Stick: Her Angel takes the form of a Witch's broom. She often rides on it while flying.
  • Fountain of Youth: She turns the main cast into 9-year-old children once they catch sight of her true form.
  • Freudian Excuse: She starts off obsessed with using her powers to make herself beautiful and very spiteful when others see her real form. While her initial behavior makes her look petty, she didn't have an easy life before she got the powers she needed to become attractive. She grew up with an abusive mother who regularly beat her. Her attempts at being a good daughter backfired as it caused her mother to hate her even more. She would even be called ugly by her often while growing up. This treatment resulted in her presuming the worst of people as well as her own appearance.
  • The Gadfly: She likes to tease people fairly often. In her case it seems to be to both get a reaction as shown with Kotori (when teasing her about being short), and having trouble expressing herself as seen with Yoshino (when she says she'd like to marry her to her embarrassment).
  • Healing Hands: She can apply first aid that by transforming someone's body into one without injuries.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After Shido and the Spirits give her a makeover to fix her body image issues, and Shido risks his life for her sake against Ellen and a later Colony Drop, she breaks down crying and apologizes for antagonizing them.
  • Hot Witch: Her initial disguise is a tall, curvaceous adult woman in a very form-fitting witch outfit.
  • I Am Not Pretty: The reason why she uses the aformetioned Hot Witch form is because she doesn't consider her true form as pretty. This is due to the abuse from her mother, to the point where she wondered if she would've been spared from the abuse if she was born prettier.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: She changes her appearance into a beautiful woman because she thinks that's the only way to get love from other people, since her abusive background convinced her that her true form is too ugly for anyone to love her. She's comfortable to be herself only after Shido and the other Spirits accept her as their friend for who she really is.
  • Impossibly-Low Neckline: Her true form's Astral Dress has a top that hangs off her shoulders.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: She takes the form of a confident and haughty woman with astonishing beauty so people praise her, but once others see her true form, she believes they're going to call her ugly and she starts acting gloomy.
  • Magic Mirror: Her Angel contains a mirror which transforms whatever it sheds light on. She also used it to trap her victims in a pocket dimension during her game with Shido.
  • Master of Disguise: Thanks to her shapeshifting powers, she can turn into whatever she wants. During Volume 8, she disguised herself as Yoshinon, Yoshino's puppet, though the farce is only revealed when Yoshinon was able to react to something Yoshino couldn't, and that Yoshinon knew of its time in Origami's house; both of which were impossible since Yoshinon was a Split Personality of Yoshino, meaning it couldn't know anything that Yoshino didn't, and that outside of Yoshino's control Yoshinon was nothing more than a puppet.
  • Meaningful Name: Her surname Kyouno contains "mirror", which her Angel uses to transform others, and generally represents her body image issues.
  • Messy Hair: Her hair is quite unruly in her true form, which is one of her many insecurities about it. The author has even compared it to a Christmas tree.
  • Name Amnesia: She can only remember her given name. Volume 22 reveals her surname to be Kyouno, though in previous volume she had assumed it to be Nekuragawa or Inkiyada.
  • Navel Outline: Her Hot Witch form wears very form-fitting clothes, resulting in a visible navel outline.
  • Older Than She Looks: She was in junior high when she became a Spirit, but her true form looks like an elementary school student because her growth was stunted from malnutrition due to her mother not wanting to feed her properly.
  • Power Copying:
    • Haniel's Kaleidoscope ability is this, allowing Natsumi to transform Haniel into an inferior copy of another Angel. On a more downplayed level, her ability to mimic people is so great that she's able to copy their skill level, this was best shown in Volume 13 where she revealed she could draw at the level of a professional illustrator.
  • Pseudo-Romantic Friendship: After her sealing, she quickly forms a close bond with Yoshino, to the point of once blurting out that she wants to marry her.
  • Red Baron: Her Angel Haniel has one befitting its powers, "Witch of Forgery".
  • Sensual Spandex: Natsumi's initial Astral Dress doesn't show much skin, but clings very closely to her curvaceous adult body.
  • Sexier Alter Ego: She makes herself appear as an attractive young woman with a curvaceous body, but her true form is a skinny little girl. It's something she would rather not show to people, as she doesn't think she's cute, and promptly transforms the girls of the main cast into 9-year-old children before she flees.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: She has low self-esteem because she thinks her true form is ugly. Shido and the other Spirits give her true form a makeover to show her that she can pretty herself up without relying on her transformation powers.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: When introduced, Natsumi is very bitter, hostile and malicious towards Shido and the other Spirits, especially after they find out how she really looks like. However, she isn't actually a bad person, just a very lonely girl who never received love or positive attention from her family and got bullied because she was unattractive. Once Shido and the Spirits prove they really want to be her friends, no matter how she looks like, Natsumi softens significantly.
  • Squishy Wizard: Ratatoskr puts her physical stats rather low. This is shown when she gets quickly subdued by Ellen even after turning her into a child. Like Nia, she spends much of the Spirit battle royale trying to avoid a direct fight with anyone.
  • Tears of Remorse: She cries after realizing how wrong her actions were towards Shido and the Spirits at the end of volume 9.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: She's introduced as a self-absorbed jerk who seeks to make Shido a Hero with Bad Publicity. After seeing Shido do everything to find her when the entire town was in danger, hearing everyone still speak good of her when she thought they'd speak ill behind her back, and their efforts to protect Tenguu City all help Natsumi experience a Heel Realization and finally begin to trust others. Her negative way of thinking hasn't fully vanished, but at least she's a lot nicer to Shido and the other Spirits now.
  • The Transmogrifier: She can transform other people into whatever she pleases.
  • The Trickster: In her introductory arc, Natsumi turns Shido's life upside down by taking his form to make him look like a sex offender and making everyone he knows disappear one by one. She gets better after Shido manages to befriend her and she lets him seal her powers.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Her true form is a sullen little girl with unkempt hair and skin.
  • Vain Sorceress: Her Hot Witch appearance is a fake form she created so others wouldn't see her childlike and unkempt true appearance.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Her Angel's main power allows Natsumi to transform anything, including herself, into anything else within a range of at least 1 kilometer. She uses this several times on herself in volume 8, practically confusing the main characters in the process.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: After the events in volume 8 and most of volume 9, this is essentially what Shidou tries to do to get Natsumi to open up to him and the rest of the girls. It takes a while to stick.

"It was a Spirit's fault, that five years ago... my parents died."

A girl who's top in beauty, brains and brawn. Shido's classmate, who for reasons unknown harbors very strong feelings for him. Secretly holds the rank of Master Sergeant with the AST. She has vowed to destroy all the Spirits, and is very conflicted in her feelings about the depowered Spirits who she's coming to know.

At the end of Volume 9, Origami's intense thirst for revenge against the Spirits made her turn to Isaac Westcott, who was coincidentally looking for a capable fighter. Using new and improved Combat Realizers, she fights the Spirits once again in Volume 10, only to brought down by Tohka. It is then, in her defeat, that she pleads for even more power, prompting the enigmatic Phantom to make its appearance, granting her a Sephira crystal that turns her into a powerful Spirit. She sought out Kurumi to send her back in time so she could use her newfound powers to kill Phantom before it supposedly kills her parents, only to learn the horrifying truth that she killed them herself, and slipped into Inversion. Shido and Kurumi's further time travel would result in a new timeline where Origami's parents were saved on that fateful day, leading to Origami becoming a completely different person.

Tropes that apply to both incarnations

  • Attack Drone: "Kadour" has Origami break up her formation of cannons and send them individually after her opponent, each gaining a will of their own.
  • Barrier Warrior: One of her Angel's abilities makes her cannons of light surround her, blocking any incoming attack.
  • Beam Spam: Her main form of attack. "Shemesh" has her make the surrounding cannons of light spin around her and gather light particles, releasing them as a rain of energy blasts. This proves problematic for Tohka, who, as a close range warrior, can't even get near her for a good part of the fight.
  • Child Soldier: Joined the AST after her parents (or supposedly Shido in the modified timeline) were killed by a Spirit.
  • Cool Crown: Her Spirit form's Astral Dress has a large golden headdress which looks like a crown that's twice as large as her head. Similarly, her Angel's default form, Metatron, possesses several cannons of light that surround her and, when put together, resembles a giant crown. Fittingly, the 1st Sephira which she represents, Kether, is Hebrew for "crown". This changes into a black, spiky halo once Origami takes on her Inverse Form.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Played with, while her dark-dressed Inverse starts out as a dangerous force, her New Timeline self takes control of it and is more noble then her old timeline self.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: While she was a Badass Normal at the start of the story, Volume 10 elevates her to new heights by turning her into a Spirit capable of rivaling Tohka at her strongest.
  • Evil Costume Switch: When she turns into an Inverse Spirit, her Astral Dress changes from a white wedding dress to a revealing dark blue mourning dress.
  • Fairy Tale Wedding Dress: Origami's Astral Dress has the appearance of a wedding dress, reflecting her childhood dream of becoming a cute bride. According to Word of God, the idea of Origami in a wedding dress is "scary".
  • Fusion Dance: An item based example, in Volume 15, she summoned her Limited Astral Dress and her Angel while wearing the CR Unit Brynhildr to even the odds when she fights Artemisia. The next battle ups the ante by using Inverse Spirit's Reiryoku* to hold off Inverse Tohka.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: Her Astral Dress is a pure white wedding dress with some golden portions of armor, and is said to look angelic from far away.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel: Volume 12 shows she has these representing her old and new timeline selves. The angel being her old timeline self in spirit form, and her devil being her new timeline self in her Inverse form. Unlike most cases of this trope, the angel is the Id and the Devil is the Superego.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Hepburn "Tobiichi" vs Nihon-Shiki "Tobiiti" The former is used in the light novels and anime, while the latter is used in all of the manga adaptations.
  • It Was a Gift: She's always wearing three clips in her right bangs, given from her late mother.
  • Light 'em Up: Origami's newfound Spirit powers allow her to generate beam-firing cannons and change their formation depending on which attack she's winding up. She can fold them into wings for flying, send them individually after the opponent, or even use them defensively.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: The original timeline's Origami is the stoic, vengeful, and sexually aggressive Dark Feminine, while the modified timeline's Origami is the kind, innocent, and chaste Light Feminine.
  • Leotard of Power: Her Wiring Suit worn to facilitate the use of her Territory as a Wizard.
  • Long-Range Fighter: Her fighting style as a Spirit focuses on firing countless beams of light while teleporting to safety when the enemy gets too close.
  • Mystical White Hair: Her white hair makes her stand out from most of the cast. The significance of her hair colour is strengthened when she becomes a Spirit.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her Astral Dress has a plunging neckline that nearly reaches her waist.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Played for laughs, Volume 12 shows us exactly how both her old timeline and new timeline selves struggle to co-exist properly in the same body. Her new timeline self for example reacts with horror to the lack of shame her old timeline's self shows.
  • Power Gives You Wings: One of the abilities of her Angel Metatron, "Mal'akh - Heavenly Wings", allows her to fold her cannons of light into wings and fly around at great speeds.
  • Red Baron: Her Angel Metatron is described as "Angel of Extinction." In contrast, her Demon King Satan is referred as "Demon King of Salvation".
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: Zig-zagged, in Volume 15 she both forgets and remembers Shido after Mukuro seals everyone's memories of him. Specifically, her old timeline self forgets him, but her new timeline ends up immune to the effects.
  • Sci-Fi Bob Haircut: She sports a bob haircut and her job is piloting a futuristic powered suit.
  • Showgirl Skirt: Her Astral Dress has the skirt cut much closer at the front to reveal her legs.
  • Split Personality: Origami's self from the original timeline transfers to the new timeline. After being sealed, they both manifest within Origami, the dominant half at any one moment is indicated by Origami's facial expressions (stoic expressions for the old timeline personality, and more natural expressions for the new timeline personality) and situations.) Volume 15 reveals it may also be linked to her Inverse Form when like Inverse Tohka, she doesn't forget Shido after Mukuro seals everyone's memories of him.
  • Stripperiffic: While her Spirit attire as Angel is quite tame by Spirit standards, her Inverse Form follows Dark Tohka's trend, baring her shoulders and midriff, as well as making her dress more skimpy.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: With herself ironically. Her old timeline's self is more of a tomboy due to her obsession with fighting Spirits and her unwelcome sexual advances towards Shido, but her long haired self in the new timeline is more of a sweet and demure girly girl.
  • Travel Transformation: Origami is able to turn herself into light and warp away to a safe location, although Tohka deduces that she can't use this continuously since the destination is predictable and unlikely to avoid a large attack. The ability is automatic, as even Origami herself was surprised the first time it happened.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: "Artelif", in which the cannons assemble into a circular motion and fire a beam of pure light.

Tropes that apply to the original timeline's Origami

  • Academic Athlete: She has top grades in the country and is very fit from military training.
  • Accidental Murder: Turns out that the Spirit responsible for her parents’ deaths was neither Efreet nor Phantom, but Origami herself; she was sent back in time by Kurumi, flew into a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against the supposed culprit Phantom, and vaporized her parents with a missed attack.
  • And Then John Was a Zombie: Her thirst for a power capable of defeating the Spirits causes Phantom to offer her a Sephira Crystal. She accepts, becoming the Spirit "Angel".
  • Arc Villain: She becomes a full-on villain in the second half of Season 3 (Volume 10). While it's mostly Ellen and Wescott pulling her strings, it's Origami's own actions and obsession for revenge for her parents that's driving the arc's narrative.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: When several of Shido's classmates are complaining about him (actually Natsumi) sexually harassing them, Origami is only concerned that he didn't do anything to her and wants him to start now.
  • Armed Legs: One her AST suits she wears sports a retractable heel blade. She uses it to become the second person to ever hurt Ellen Mira Mathers.
  • Badass Normal: She's the only human girl within Shido's harem yet she is able to stand up against powerful Spirits like Tohka. In Volume 10, she manages to defeat four Spirits in their limited Astral Dresses, but she still loses against full-power Tohka. Phantom's subsequent appearance turns Origami into a Spirit herself.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • In Volume 7, Origami's arrival stops Ellen and Jessica's double teaming of Mana, and Origami manages to injure the former, with a little aid from the Fraxinus' main cannon.
    • In Volume 9, after Ratatoskr and Shidou's successfully destroy two satellites that falling on the city, they're too far gone to handle the third satellite. Cue Origami one-shotting it in her brand new CR suit.
  • Broken Ace: She's one of the AST's finest, and has top grades at school. Despite this, her obsession with avenging her parents makes her ignore her orders in favour of charging the Spirits, and later leads to a Face–Heel Turn.
  • Broken Bird: Once upon a time, she was a cheerful girl who wanted to be a bride. Then her parents were killed by a Spirit and became a ruthless Child Soldier.
  • Byronic Heroine: Her motivation to kill Spirits, due to the deaths of her parents by one, is an integral part of her character. She's never really presented as a true antagonist, nonetheless she's dangerously obsessive and tends to endanger innocent lives in her pursuit of revenge. As a result, she literally becomes the very same Spirit that killed her own parents.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Towards Shido. Half of her antics revolve around stopping anyone (especially Tohka) from getting close in her own special way.
  • The Comically Serious: She almost never emotes, no matter how ridiculous the situation she finds herself in and is so dedicated to Shido she will do anything he asks without question as shown in the first OVA. The height of which was dressing up as a dog, getting down on all fours and using Shido's belt as a collar after he told her to in said OVA, all with a straight face and no sign of embarrassment even while everyone around (and everyone on the Fraxinus) looks on completely disturbed. This attitude is because, upon witnessing her parents died, she outsourced all her emotions to Shido, who begged her not to let this tragedy destroy her. Shido only meant that as pep-talk. He didn't expect a deeply traumatized girl to take his words so seriously.
  • Crazy-Prepared:
    • Specifically, her house. As in sentry guns are there to keep intruders out. There's even signal jamming.
    • When She thinks Shido is a siscon in season four, she randomly pulls out adoption papers from Hammerspace and declares Shido to be her big brother, probabaly as a callback to the OVA where Shido says he's a siscon to get Origami to break up with him.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: The death of her parents at a Spirit's hands is the cause of her undying hatred for Spirits and her extreme ruthlessness.
  • Demoted to Extra: She has a minor role in the movie and doesn't share any major scenes with Shido, other than interrupting his date with Tohka. Even Kotori and Mana were more pivotal to the story than her. Justified as she's still in the hospital from the events of season 2.
  • Despair Event Horizon: In Volume 10, realizing that she was the one who killed her own parents five years prior, she goes catatonic and Inverses like Tohka in Volume 7.
  • "Do It Yourself" Theme Tune: Misuzu Togashi is another member of "sweet ARMS", singing most of the franchise's opening and ending themes.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: When she realizes that she's the Spirit who unintentionally killed her own parents. When Shido later gets a close-up look at her resulting Inverse form, her face looks like a corpse.
  • Easily Forgiven: Apologizes to Shido in the classroom for shooting him. He immediately accepts (though it has more to do with the awkward atmosphere). Later antics involving military grade weapons in an amusement park that should have led to real disciplinary action instead earn her a two month suspension, though this one is justified in that it was due to Westcott interfering with the court martial process to give her a lighter sentence that what the military brass originally wanted. After her powers are sealed, while she's still got her rivalry with Tohka, the Spirits, Shido and Ratatoskr all hold nothing against her. Kaguya briefly considered payback for Origami nearly killing them after joining DEM, but gave it up when she realised that her sentiments weren't shared.
  • Emotionless Girl: She almost never emotes. Volume 11 explains she entrusted her emotions to Shido when she decided to obsess with revenge against Spirits, and takes them back after he seals her powers.
  • Extreme Doormat: She is willing to tolerate anything Shido might say or do if it means gaining his approval. In the first OVA, all of Ratatoskr's efforts to help Shido make her dislike him fail.
  • Face–Heel Turn: While always a Byronic Heroine, her fixation on finding her parents' murderer leads her to ally herself with Isaac Westcott, who provides her with new weaponry. It doesn't stick, as she has a run-in with Phantom, who turns her into a Spirit. The next volume's time travel plot effectively makes it so her shaky partnership with Westcott never happens.
  • Fantastic Racism: She hates Spirits because one killed her parents. It reaches a head in Volume 10, where she uses her equipment from DEM to try killing all the Spirits, even though they're officially no longer considered a threat after Shido seals them, and is disgusted when she realized that she was turned into a Spirit herself. The Spirit who killed her parents was her future self all along, which made her Inverse when she found out, but after Shido helps her move on in the new timeline, she's able to get along with the other Spirits (albeit maintaining a milder rivalry with Tohka).
  • Foreshadowing: She thinks the Spirit that killed her parents looks like an angel. Volume 10 is titled Angel Tobiichi, and she is the Spirit who killed her parents.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: It obvious that she's met Shido before, even if Shido can't remember it. Volume 11 reveals their first meeting was the result of Time Travel; Shido's words in the aftermath of her parents death are what made her the person she is in the present.
  • Future Me Scares Me: In a very ironic twist, Origami's hatred towards Spirits started because her own future self became a Spirit to take revenge and ended up emotionally scarring her younger self by accidentally killing her parents right in front of her.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Doesn't take it well when she learns which Spirit may have killed her parents at the end of season 1. She suspects it was Kotori, but it wasn't. And again when she realizes that SHE was the culprit who killed her parents. It's so bad that she follows Tohka's example from volume 7.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: She's a friend of Shido's who wants to destroy spirits where he wants to save them, protects him from Kurumi when she has every intention to hurt his loved ones, tries to kill his sister, then help him when he invades DEM to save Tohka. Ends up joining DEM when she starts to accept spirits and then becomes one herself, the door finally settles at Face after Shido seals her powers in the new timeline.
  • Hero Antagonist: Her desire to destroy Spirits clashes with Ratatoskr's peaceful methods, and some conflicts in the story could have been avoided if not because of her Revenge Before Reason attitude. She's no longer this as of the end of Volume 11, and is an ally to Ratatoskr by Volume 12.
  • Heroic BSoD: The revelation that she's the one who killed her parents hit her so hard that even after Inverting she becomes completely unresponsive to anything around her, akin to a corpse by Shido's words and unrecoverable by Kurumi's.
  • He's Back!: For most of Volume 11, Origami is Not Herself because her personality changed drastically due to the changes Shido made to the timeline. After Shido seals her Spirit powers, her original personality comes back and stays in control. When she walks into the classroom the next morning, she dries Shido's eyes with the swimsuit she's wearing, and reveals that she bought a ton of weird aphrodisiacs and love potions, making clear that Origami is back to her usual self.
  • Hour of Power: Origami has the tendency of running past the operational time limit with some of her stronger CR units, such as White Licorice and Mordred, which renders her immobile and powerless afterwards. The latest CR unit she got from Ratatoskr, Brynhildr apparently averts this by absorbing leftover magic from its surrounding to sharpen its blade.
  • Hunter Of Her Own Kind: In Volume 10, she decides that she's gotten too complacent with the Spirits and plans to kill them all. Her goal doesn't change even after unwittingly becoming a Spirit herself, simply adding herself to the list once all the others are taken care of.
  • Hypocrite: Due to her blind hatred towards Spirits, viewing them as uncontrollable beasts, Origami would occasionally end up harming others in a blind rage. Her lust for new power to defeat Spirits caused her to becoming a Spirit herself, turning her into the very thing she hated. Further down the line, she ultimately became the cause of her parent's deaths and the very catalyst to her hatred.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Her blue eyes match her very cold and stoic personality.
  • Instant Armor: In Volume 10, she initiates a fight against the sealed Spirits by calling forth her new personal CR-Unit, given to her by the DEM.
  • Instant Expert: As the first character to become a Spirit in the present story, she instinctively knew her Angel's name and powers before Tohka even made her realize that she'd just become a Spirit.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She has little respect towards Tohka because of her personal beef with the Spirits and sees her as a love rival for Shido, who is the only person she is even remotely nice to. Even so, she is not entirely a bad person and is capable of acting cordial to anyone who helps her protect Shido, like his sister Mana or (in the most extreme of circumstances) the Spirits. Upon laying her inner demons to rest and moving past her grief, she reaffirms her love for Shido and becomes friendlier with the Spirits, although she is not above competing with them for Shido's affection.
  • Knight of Cerebus: In Season 3, Origami's arc brings the story to a very low point.
  • The Lancer: After her permanent Heel–Face Turn, she becomes Shido's and Tohka's long-term companion, being their classmate who has known them both from the start. She conserves her stoic and shameless personality, making her a Foil to Shido's and Tohka's more emotional and easily flustered personalities.
  • Light Is Not Good: Her mental state after Phantom turns her into a Spirit with control over light couldn't be any worse; she deduces that Phantom, due to its association with Kotori's empowerment, might be responsible for her parents' deaths, and promptly goes on a crusade against the mysterious entity, even crossing time five years into the past to do it.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Whenever she's with Shido, Origami is trying to get into his pants or talking about all the perverted stuff she wants to do with him.
  • Love Epiphany: In the aftermath of Volume 11, she admits to Shido that all this time she didn't really love him, she was only using him as a Living Emotional Crutch. It's only after he helps her move on with her life is that she falls in love with him for real.
  • Loving Details: She knows very precise details about Shido's life, from the day he bought his lunchbox to his urea levels.
  • Misplaced Retribution: She attacks Kotori and later, Phantom after mistaking them for the Spirit that killed her parents. At the end of it, Origami discovers the one who killed her parents was herself when she accidentally got them caught up in her Roaring Rampage of Revenge towards Phantom.
  • Morality Chain: Despite her Stalker with a Crush antics, Shido is her last human connection. She decides to throw it away in Volume 10.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After blowing a hole in Shido (he gets better), and again in volume 10 after she realizes that she's the one that killed her parents.
  • Not So Stoic: One of the few times she shows strong emotion is upon seeing Efreet!Kotori for the first time. The only other persons around which she becomes more emotional are Shido, due to her feelings for him, and Tohka when their rivalry and her Clingy Jealous Girl tendencies are in full display.
  • One-Woman Army: She holds off Bayley and her DEM team by herself when she finds out that the latter had orders to kidnap Shido and Tohka (bonus point for piloting White Licorice to do so, a Flawed Prototype unit which was explicitly stated to make its pilot this). In her Mordred CR Unit, she is capable of overwhelming the whole party of Spirits in their limited Astral Dresses, although the tide quickly turned against her once Tohka regained her full power.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Deconstructed. She's a genuinely good fighter... for a human. She's outclassed by every Spirit, and has to use dangerous weapons like the White Licorice just to scratch them. Unfortunately, this encourages her to seek even greater power, culminating in joining forces with Westcott during Volume 9, and then become a Spirit herself in Volume 10.
  • Perverted Sniffing: She smells Shido's clothes when he's having physical education.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The stoic Blue to Tohka's emotional Red. In battle it's reversed, as Origami is impulsive and easily baited while Tohka displays calm judgment and patience.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: White hair, Sci-Fi Bob Haircut, pale skin and stoic. She even has the Child Soldier who drives Mecha vs Person of Mass Destruction thing going.
  • Revenge Before Reason: She attempts to kill Kotori by stealing weapons and going on the attack when her target is in a busy amusement park. Revenge is so much a part of her that when she realizes she's come to accept the Spirits, her response is to join DEM and launch a sneak attack.
  • The Rival: She views Tohka as a love rival and the feeling is fully reciprocated. The two constantly bicker and fight over Shido's affection and try to beat each other at everything even after the timeline change.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge:
    • She flies into a rage when she sees Kotori's Spirit form because the latter caused the town's fire on the day her parents died and she believes Kotori killed them because of it.
    • When she travels to the past, she goes mad with rage when she sees Phantom, under the belief that it was the Spirit who killed her parents, and goes into a rampage to try to kill it even though no attacks can even touch it. Then it's deconstructed when Origami discovers that her rampage of revenge for her parents' deaths was the reason her parents died in the first place.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Her attempts to find and kill the Spirit that murdered her parents ended up turning her into the Spirit that killed them, and convince her past self to repeat the Stable Time Loop.
  • Self-Made Orphan: After having gone back five years in time to fight Phantom in a fit of revenge for having turned her into a Spirit, a stray attack of hers ended up killing her parents. Which means that she was the one who killed her own parents five years ago, and caused her extreme hatred of Spirits.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She has no qualms about trying to seduce Shido, and will often get close to him and when making him take her temperature at the hospital, sits on his lap to do so. In the OVA, she even obeys his orders to put on a School Swimsuit with dog ears and tail, then act like a dog. In public. In Volume 12 she suggests arranging a nudist beach for Shidou, which Kotori has to tone down.
  • She Who Fights Monsters: As the story progresses, Origami's hatred for the Spirits is such that she takes increasingly drastic measures to obtain power in order to annihilate them, going from illegally taking possession of the White Licorice to allying herself with Isaac Westcott. This culminates in volume 10's encounter with Phantom, who gives her the power of a Spirit, at the cost of terrible revelations.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Tohka. The two constantly bicker and fight over the most trivial things while trying to get Shido's affection.
  • Skyward Scream: After realizing she is the murderer she's sought her whole life. Her scream takes up an entire page in the Japanese text.
  • Slipping a Mickey: If she ever makes something for Shido to consume, it's probably filled with aphrodisiacs.
  • The Snark Knight: She has shades of this, usually when insulting Tohka.
  • Something Only They Would Say: When Natsumi impersonates Shido, she can tell the difference when they're side by side, because Natsumi blinks 5 milliseconds faster and her standing angle was 0.2 degrees to the left.
  • Spanner in the Works: When fighting against Ellen in Volume 7, she manages to surprise her and leave a long deep cut across her abdomen. This wound makes Ellen unable to properly fight against Inverse Tohka, forcing her and Westcott to retreat.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Origami is by far the most obsessive of Shido's haremettes. She has a habit of secretly observing him on his way to school. Due to her stalking habits, she has detailed information about Shido from his ID data to his health check-up report. Exaggerated in the 4-koma spinoff (but not much).
  • The Stoic: She rarely shows emotions.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Extremely aloof on the outside, but also the most aggressive of Shido's pursuers.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Ellen says that Origami's Inverse form has power on the same level as Inverse Tohka, meaning that if not stopped, she likely would've gone on to destroy all Japan.
  • Terse Talker: Origami isn't one for casual chat, having several short sentences with a flat tone.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Goes from a skilled, if reckless, AST Wizard to an extremely powerful Spirit within the span of Volume 10. By the end of that volume, she also taps into her Inverse Form, becoming just as dangerous as Tohka's own Superpowered Evil Side.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: By the time of Volume 10, she realizes that she got used to living with the sealed Spirits. However, because she still holds a grudge against them, she decides to put an end to that and attacks Tohka, Miku and the Yamai sisters, resolved to come back to a normal life. Even when she becomes a Spirit, and despite Tohka's offering to understand each other, Origami insists that she will reject all Spirits, herself included.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: At the start of the series, Origami acts like a vengeful Jerkass towards Spirits due to her hatred for them, and her Clingy Jealous Girl nature kicking in when she sees Shido with other girls. After spending more time with Shido, she mellows out somewhat, and often helps Shido more than hinder him. While she still obstructs Shido from time to time, she's much less stubborn and actually helps him out quite a bit, such as distracting the DEM team sent to capture Tohka and Shido during their contest with Miku. Unfortunately, she reverts to her initial behavior when she realizes she's going soft and accepts DEM's help to get a chance at killing all the sealed Spirits. After Shido changes the timeline and helps Origami come to terms with having caused her own parents' deaths, she lets go of her hatred for Spirits for good and officially joins Shido's Battle Harem. From then on, she gets along well with the other Spirits and becomes able to show concern for others besides Shido.
  • Too Kinky to Torture:
    • For lack of a better word, at least; she's so indifferent to her environment she'd do anything Shido asks her to do without hesitating even a second and absolutely not a care to other people's reactions. Which means that if he were to ask her to dress up an embarrassing costume and get on all fours, she'd do just that, as seen in the OVA (it involves a school swimsuit, dog ears/tail and a leash that is actually Shido's belt that she wraps around her neck herself).
    • In the Spirit King Game short story/drama CD, all the girls subject her to the same perverted demands that she put on them (like making Tohka expose her panties for a full minute) once they figure out that she's cheating her way into the king over and over, only for her to perform each one without batting an eye (as well as creeping out Shido when applicable, like showing off her panties to Shido when Tohka returns the aforementioned command). It's only when Shido simply asks her and Tohka to get along that she coughs up blood.
  • Trauma Button: One thing that almost always sets her off is her parents' deaths and anything that reminds her of it.
  • Troll: In order to assert that Shido is her lover, she'll constantly tease Tohka with various misunderstandings, even if they're made on the spot.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: After learning from her trip five years into the past that she's a Self-Made Orphan, she returns to the present as an Inverse Spirit in this position, completely unresponsive to anyone around her while her Demon King starts destroying the city. The Origami in the new timeline also finds her old timelime self like this within their mind, wracked with guilt over her parents' deaths.
  • The Unreveal: When Shido wonders how they will get someone to sing the band's vocals for the school festival, Origami simply activates a karaoke jukebox and starts singing. A cut later, everyone is astounded at how good she is, and she turns to the screen with a thumbs up.
    Origami: Anything for Shiori.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: She was an average elementary schooler who dreamed of being a beautiful bride. Now she has a vendetta she's willing to die to fulfill. Her Astral Dress is meant to look like a wedding dress and its Inverse is supposed to show how far she's fallen since that time.
  • Van Helsing Hate Crimes: She hates Spirits with passion and they're all evil monsters in her eyes, even though it's very clear that not all Spirits are bad. Eventually, she attacks all the sealed Spirits, even though she has already spent time with them as if they were allies and friends multiple times, because she can't allow herself to forget the Spirit that killed her parents. However, this very hatred is what leads her to accidentally kill her own parents in the past.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Even by AST standards, she really takes to heart her mission of eliminating Spirits, going as far as to engage them without her superior's orders. As the story progresses, however, it turns out that her motives are far darker.
  • When She Smiles: The cover of Volume 11 marks one of the few times Origami is genuinely smiling. Even if by that point she has triggered the Inverse Form of her newfound Spirit powers. She does smile right before Shidou seals her powers, finally able to move on from her past.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Has white hair and while she's not exactly evil, she's not a pleasant person and her strong hatred for Spirits make her a dangerous Anti-Hero.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: After learning she herself was the real cause of her parents' deaths, Origami goes out of control and is on a seemingly endless rampage. She even shot down Fraxinus. The worst part is Origami wasn't even intending to do any of this. She was just so mentally broken, that not only was she no longer in control of her powers, but sealing her in any capacity was out of the question too. If not for Kurumi sending Shido to the past, Origami could've gone on to destroy the entire world.
  • You Are What You Hate: Not only she becomes one of the Spirits she hates so much, she's the Spirit who killed her own parents in the first place.
  • You Killed My Father: This is the reason why she is so hell-bent on fighting the Spirits. After seeing Kotori's powers in action, she immediately suspects and tries to eliminate her. Turns out that wasn't the case, and that it was another Spirit who did it. Volume 10 reveals that spirit was herself.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: She delays Bayley and her DEM team from kidnapping Shido and Tohka during a festival in episode 6 and 7 of season 2. By herself.

Tropes that apply to the modified timeline's Origami

  • Alternate Identity Amnesia: The old timeline personality would take over the new timeline's body as an Inverse Spirit whenever she laid eyes on a Spirit. Once said Spirit was (supposedly) vanquished, the new timeline personality would regain consciousness, unaware of what just happened. This stops after she gets sealed.
  • Covert Pervert: She's much more modest and wholesome than the original Origami, but her other self's perverted habits still leak into her unconsciously when she's with Shido.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In the new timeline, where her parents weren't killed by a Spirit (actually herself) and led a more well-adjusted life, she has much longer hair. After the old timeline personality regained control, she cut it back down to its original shoulder-length.
  • Helpless Good Side: Unlike her other personality, she's very sweet, innocent and genuinely only fought Spirits to help people. Unfortunately, she can't do anything to stop her Inverse Spirit self from taking over and attacking Shido and others. After Shido manages to seal her Spirit powers, she does prove to be useful when Mukuro erases Shido from her other self's memory and she takes control of the body to protect Shido from Inverse Tohka.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Shido managed to avert the Spirit Origami's murder of her parents in the past, but the new timeline's Origami still lost her parents in a car accident a year later, joined the Anti-Spirit Team (although not out of revenge), and became Shido's classmate.
  • Lecherous Licking: As a result of the original Origami's influence within her, she can't resist the urge to lick Shido's spoon when having a meal with him.
  • Limp and Livid: Whenever Origami in the new timeline saw a Spirit after becoming one herself, she would go quiet and stiff before entering her Inverse form and blasting the Spirit until its apparent demise.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: This Origami is much more demure and traditionally feminine than the original. To reflect this, her hair is much longer to contrast the original's short hair.
  • Nice Girl: She's a lot nicer, more polite, and much less shameless than the regular Origami.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: Due to the original Origami's personality controlling her, she ends up putting on a School Swimsuit cosplay during her date with Shido, much to her own embarrassment and confusion.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's quite a bit shyer than the old Origami. When it came to Shido asking her out on a date, she found herself constantly trying to find the best way to reply to it.
  • Stepford Smiler: In the new timeline where her parents still died a year later, she stands tall due to Shido giving her another year to spend with them and remembering the sacrifice his "older brother" made to give her that year.

"—The truth is... I never fall in love with anything but 2D..."
The Second Spirit that is mentioned by Kurumi near the end of Volume 7 to be the only one who knows the whereabouts of the First Spirit. Kurumi had attacked DEM on two occasions to rescue her, only to found out that she had escaped to the Tenguu City on Volume 12. She made her proper debut in Volume 13.
  • A-Cup Angst: She once tried to have Shido remove an envelope from her chest, only to fall into despair when it simply falls to the floor.
  • Adaptational Modesty: Her Astral Dress is not see-through in the anime.
  • The Alcoholic: Nia is a pretty heavy drinker; the datebook lists alcohol as her favorite thing, and Shido found that her fridge was full of nothing but bottles (she'd rather eat instant food than spend valuable time cooking). She boasts that being a Spirit has prevented any adverse effects on her health.
  • Berserk Button: If you're going to cosplay a character she likes, get their personality down to the slightest detail. She actually beats up Shido and ends their date just because he broke out of Tokiya's character to try kissing her.
  • Body Horror: Relatively subtle, but those patches of gray on her body in her Inverse Form are actually papers sewn onto her skin. That has got to hurt.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Her casual outfits and interests are hardly feminine, and she has short spiky hair comparable to Shido's. Among the Spirits, only Origami's is anywhere near as short. Word of God says that she was designed to avoid conventions for light novel girls.
  • Broken Bird: In Volume 14, she tells Shido that before she became a Spirit, there was an event that caused her to lose all hope in living.
  • Butt-Monkey: Some of it is comedic (like MARIA constantly belittling her), some of it not so much (captured and tortured by DEM for 5 years, then losing her powers for most of the story).
  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: During her date with Shido, she invites him to pick out an outfit for her to wear (he picks a nurse outfit), and Shido himself later manages to arouse her by cosplaying as her favorite character... at least until he broke out of character.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Even more so than the other Spirits as she actually hates having her powers, and Rasiel made it too hard to trust people due to fearing the curiosity of using its ability on them and finding unpleasant parts of their past.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was captured by DEM and subjected to Cold-Blooded Torture for five years to make her go into her Inverse Form, but she managed to stay sane through it all. She finally managed to escape when Kurumi rescued her.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: What happens to her after losing most of her Crystal. She can only use her limited Astral Dress at most, and her Angel gives mostly incomprehensible information when asked. This prevents her or Shido from just looking up anyone’s Mysterious Past or preparing for DEM’s threats, and keeps her Reality Warper powers off limits.
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: Her glasses disappear in her Spirit form, to exchange her nerdy look for a Naughty Nun outfit.
  • Great Big Book of Everything: Her Angel Rasiel is compared to a "super powerful search engine". It does have some limitations: it can't alert her to danger because it only gives her the info she's directly asking for (which allowed Ellen to capture her through an ambush), it can't see the future or people's thoughts, and it can't answer subjective questions.
  • Heroic BSoD: When she remembers the torture she endures, things go haywire pretty quickly.
  • Hey, You!: She addresses Shido as "Boy".
  • Holy Halo: Season 4 depicts her Inverse Form as possessing a small, spiky, black halo over her head.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: She lost her memory like most of the Spirits, however due to Rasiel's powers she was able to remember what she forgot, including that she used to be human. She was also made to forget the Cold-Blooded Torture Westcott put her through, as he determined that she would go catatonic before she inverted. He waited until she started to open her heart to Shido before restoring her memories, this time making her Inverse.
  • Meaningful Name: Her surname contains the kanji for "book", fitting not only her manga career and general otaku hobbies, but also the form of her Angel.
  • Meta Girl: Being a mangaka, she often observes writing elements within the story.
  • A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read: A variation; Rasiel cannot actually read people's minds, but she can look up everything the person has said or done. Nia ended up closing her heart to humans after reading into one too many unpleasant pasts, but deep down, she'd rather not have this ability to pry into peoples' lives so she could try to make friends again.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Feels this way toward Kurumi, who took her Sephira Crystal from Westcott in Volume 19 while still having her own time powers.
  • Naughty Nuns: Her Astral Dress is a nun's habit. Made of GAUZE. She even lampshades how revealing it is.
  • Near-Death Experience: She's the first Spirit that almost died due to Artemisia taking out her Qlipha Crystal while Inversed. Shido only managed to save her by sealing her allowing the cycle of Spirit power to slowly heal her, and only because Tohka was able to notice she still had any left.
  • Nerf: A notable example compared to the other Spirits, as her Angel is left incomplete after most of her Crystal is taken, she is literally only able to access her limited Astral Dress at best.
  • The Nicknamer: She rarely ever addresses anyone by their actual names. Examples include Natssun (Natsumi) and Manacchi (Mana, who believes that she's being compared to an aquatic mammal). She even nicknamed her Angel Rasiemon.
  • Nun Too Holy: Her Astral Dress makes her look like a nun, but she's a heavy drinker with a lewd sense of humor.
  • Older Than They Look: Nia looks around 18-19, but she stopped aging when she became a Spirit over 27-28 years ago.
  • The Omniscient: Nia's S-ranked Angel, <Rasiel>, is a book that can give the user information about anything that has ever happened in the world, no matter where and when. Nia describes this ability as "a super powerful search engine", where one has to focus on the sought-after information before arriving at an answer.
  • Otaku: She is a huge fan of anime and manga.
  • Red Baron: Fittingly, her Angel Rasiel is described as "Tome of Revelation." Similarly, her Demon King Beelzebub is described as "Tome of Divine Corruption"
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her Inverse Form is depicted in the anime as having deep red eyes.
  • Rescue Introduction: She's first seen in the anime when Kurumi infiltrates the DEM facility that held her captive to rescue her.
  • Rewriting Reality: Everything written is Rasiel is true, so reality will contort itself to whatever she writes (or draws) in it.
  • Riddle for the Ages: The exact impetus for Phantom turning her into a Spirit is never revealed.
  • Safety in Indifference: Having access to infinite personal information about people made Nia reluctant to care about others because she knows everyone has a dark secret that can make her become disillusioned. Even when she tries to go on a date with Shido, she admits she can't bring herself to open up to a real person and can only love fictional characters because these won't betray her. Eventually, Shido's caring bond with the Spirits touches her enough for her to be willing to give him a real chance. Ironically, it was this same indifference that protected her from becoming an Inverse Spirit after DEM tortured her for five years.
  • Secret-Keeper:
    • She knows a lot about the First Spirit and avoids sharing it with people she doesn't trust with it. This is the reason why Kurumi looks for her.
    • Downplayed in regards to Elliot having helped found the DEM and summoning the First Spirit, as she only hides it up until the group meets him in person.
  • Sequential Artist: She works as a manga artist, under the Pen Name Soji Honjo, and is the author of one of Shido's favorite manga, "Silver Bullet".
  • Sexy Slit Dress: Her Astral Dress has a long skirt with a slit up to the top of her right thigh.
  • Squishy Wizard: Ratatoskr’s data puts her physical stats very low. While Rasiel has amazing information gathering, its combat abilities are almost nonexistent, though this doesn’t seem to apply as much to Beelzebub. She spends the Spirit battle royale sneaking around trying to team up with someone because she knows her combat abilities are pretty much dead last.
  • Stepford Smiler: Nia is outwardly a joyful, friendly woman, but deep down feels distrust toward "3D" humans after seeing one too many unpleasant backgrounds with Rasiel.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Rasiel knows everything, and can bend future events to an extent. This is on top of the abilities displayed by Beelzebub, Rasiel's counterpart to create monsters made of its papers and trap people in an alternate reality made by fictional stories. It's no wonder such a power was taken away by DEM before Shido could add it to his Spirit power arsenal.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Just like Tohka and Origami, Nia enters her Inverse Form from negative emotions as a result of a Memory Gambit Westcott pulled on her. Unlike them however, Westcott managed to steal it from her and take its power, so she likely no longer has access to it.
  • Superpower Lottery: With her Angel, there are very little things Nia cannot achieve by herself. Its powers are even compared to a god's by Kotori and Shido. The possibilities are only really inhibited by her pacifistic nature, as she doesn't even want to provide information to someone who would abuse it.
  • The Tease: She repeatedly flusters Shido with acts like putting an envelope with his pay in Victoria's Secret Compartment (pity she isn't large enough to pull it off), and exposing herself while half-undressed as she changes to a cosplay outfit of his choice.
  • Timeline-Altering MacGuffin: Her Angel can set how events will happen a few minutes into the future.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: At first, Nia can't bring herself to open up and trust people because she fears she'll be disappointed if Rasiel makes her see their dark and ugly secrets. Shido and the other Spirits work hard to make a doujinshi about their story to appeal to her, but what really moves Nia is using Rasiel to realize the feelings of love and trust that Shido inspires in the girls are genuine. Thanks to this, Nia opens her heart enough for Shido to seal her and save her life after Westcott steals her Sephira Crystal.
  • Winged Humanoid: The anime depicts her Inverse Form as having black wings sprouting from her lower back.
  • The Worf Effect: Her Inverse form is subjected to this twice, first by Shido who almost managed to return Nia back to normal with his multiple Angels, and then by Artemisia, Westcott's newest Dragon who removed her Qlipha Crystal singlehandedly, leaving Nia with Drama-Preserving Handicap.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: When she goes to the bookstore with Shido, she gets really excited on finding the yaoi section, throwing a couple volumes into the shopping basket Shido is carrying, and borderline squeeing.

    Mukuro Hoshimiya

Mukuro Hoshimiya

Voiced by: Akari Kageyama (Japanese), Kristen McGuire (English), Leslie Gil (Latin-American Spanish)

Code name: "Zodiac"

Angel: Michael (Key)

Astral Dress: Eloah

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mukuro_hoshimiya_astral_dress.png
"All in all, Shidou, thy hypocrisy is like a maze lest I be snared. Cease ever returning and begone."
"Lo, Nushi-sama. Dost thou adore Muku?" (after her emotions were unlocked)
The tenth Spirit to make her debut into the series on Volume 14, she had locked away her emotions and secluded herself in space until she was rudely approached by DEM and retaliated by sending the warships's debris across the globe.
  • The Aloner: Mukuro isolates herself in outer space because she wants to be alone. And she will go to extreme lengths if it means protecting her solitude.
  • Ambiguous Innocence: What makes Mukuro a dangerous and ultimately pitiable character is that everything she does is born from a lack of moral understanding and fear of being hurt by being abandoned again. The latter of which is the reason why she sealed her emotions to begin with.
  • Anime Chinese Girl: She ties her hair together in an odango hairstyle and her Astral Dress resembles a Qipao.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: She has the tendency to speak in archaic style, before and after her emotions were unlocked. After her emotions were unlocked, she address Shidou as Nushi-sama, a polite form of honorific used by women in Edo period to addressing males (typically their husband or master).
  • Armor-Piercing Question: She questions Shido about the Spirits he sealed actually had safer lives as a result. Shido spends much of Volume 14 in distress because he feels that they're in fact put in greater danger with their reduced power.
  • Attack Reflector: Not quite, but Michael's ability to manipulate space allows Mukuro to redirect every physical aggression right back at her opponent. She destroys the first wave of DEM spaceships attacking her through this method.
  • Badass Boast: "There exists not an angel capable of surpassing Muku's Michael."
  • Batman Can Breathe in Space: She can survive the harsh environment of outer space solely due to her Spirit powers and Astral Dress.
  • Big Sister Worship: Flashbacks show Mukuro was very attached to her adopted older sister and learned about constellations from her. When her older sister grew to hate her for erasing everyone's memories of her, Mukuro was so distraught that she locked away her own emotions and memories.
  • Boob-Based Gag: Mukuro's chest is often noted for being incredibly large relative to her youthful face and stature. During their date, Shido lets Mukuro try on Kotori's clothes, but they're too tight for her large bust. Kotori gets annoyed with Shido for reminding her how flat-chested she is compared to Mukuro.
  • Braids of Action: She compromises with Shido to let him tie her hair into a braid (which is long enough to tie around her neck like a scarf) because she initially wasn't willing to cut it.
  • Celestial Body: Parts of her Astral Dress resemble the void of space, complete with constellations.
  • Cleavage Window: Her Astral Dress exposes her large bust.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: After falling in love with Shido, Mukuro wants his complete and undivided attention, even more so than Tohka and Origami. She does not take it well when Shido says he loves all the Spirits equally, even going as far as sealing everybody else's memories of him so he belongs only to her.
  • Cool Key: Her Angel, Michael, takes the form of a giant key.
  • Cosmic Motifs: Her surname contains "star" (hoshi), her Astral Dress is decorated with constellations, her Angel includes a star design in its key ring, and she was introduced floating up in outer space.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Blond hair and gold eyes.
  • Death from Above: She enters the story by sending the debris of DEM spaceships she wrecked upon 42 points across the globe.
  • Emotion Suppression: She used Michael on herself to seal her own emotions because she didn't want to feel sadness or loneliness.
  • Emotionless Girl: Due to using Michael to lock away her emotions, she speaks and thinks like a robot.
  • Foil: To Shido, of all people. Both grew up while being abandoned by their birth parents and eventually entered a foster family. But while Shido had his closed heart opened by his new family, Mukuro choose to seal her own afterwards. They both gained a sister as an adoptive sibling, but where Shido got Kotori as a younger sister who became a Spirit, Mukuro gained an older sister and was the one who became a Spirit.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: Her hair, eyes, and Sephira Crystal are all golden, and she possesses the most absurdly powerful Angel in the series aside from Mio's.
  • Happily Adopted: Subverted in her backstory. Mukuro was an orphan who lived happily with her adoptive family and she especially loved her new older sister. That happy life only lasted until Mukuro grew so jealous of her sister's friends that she used her Spirit powers to make everyone forget her. As a result, her adoptive family came to see her as a monster and Mukuro ran away.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: In Volume 18, Mio's Ain Soph manipulates her wormholes so she ends up stabbing herself with her own Angel.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Her Angel in "Shifuru" form increases her already ridiculous base abilities further. She can fight evenly against Inverse Tohka when it is active, and could've delivered a lethal blow with "Jerez" had Shidou not shielded Inverse Tohka and Origami from it.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Mukuro is ultimately just a lonely girl so desperate for love that she'll resort to extremes whenever she thinks she's secured it.
  • Important Haircut: In Volume 22, she resolves to "leave the past behind" as she has Shido cut her hair to the length seen in images of the previous chapter.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: After her emotions are unlocked, she tells Shido that she's so thankful to him that she accepted his self-introductory offer* to become his "flesh slave" and asked about its meaning, much to the shock to everyone around.
  • Intimate Hair Brushing: She only lets the people she trusts and loves the most to touch her hair, as seen when she allows Shido to comb and braid her hair for their date. Before him, her adoptive sister liked to brush her hair and gave her the double bun hairstyle that Mukuro still wears in the present.
  • Lack of Empathy: Justified when her emotions are sealed. She has no problem with bombarding the planet with spaceship debris in retaliation to DEM's attack on her, and is willing to annihilate the entire human race (by stopping Earth's rotation) simply because Shido interferes with her desire to be alone.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Michael can lock away memories. She did to herself to forget why she locked her emotions and went into space, and later does it to everyone's memory of Shido so she can have him all to herself (which she also did to her adoptive family, with their consequent rejection of her leading to her aforementioned self-exile).
  • Meaningful Name: Her surname contains "hoshi" (star), befitting the constellations on her Astral Dress and her initial dwelling in outer space.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Unintentionally giving Shido a potentially fatal injury hits her so hard that she starts to inverse, but Shido manages to stop it by sealing her powers.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: She once had a happy adoptive family, but then she became a Spirit and used her powers to make people forget her family members so no one could steal their attention away from her. Obviously, her family didn't react well to this and called her a monster. Not wanting to be hurt and rejected by people, Mukuro isolated herself in space and refused all contact with humans until Shido wins her over.
  • Nobody Touches the Hair: Her mood turns sour the moment Shido innocently suggests that she could benefit from a haircut. When Inverse Tohka happens to cut off a few strands, she enters her Super Mode intent on utterly annihilating her. After her sealing, she gives Shido permission to cut her hair, explaining that only those she considers family are allowed to touch it.
  • Power Limiter: Her Angel, Michael, normally looks like a giant key, but its true form is that of a halberd, which can be accessed by activating "Shifuru" ("Release"). This form utilizes Michael's abilities to its fullest extent.
  • Red Baron: Her Angel Michael is also referred as "Seal-Removing Lord"
  • Safety in Indifference: She sealed her emotions away so she wouldn't ever be hurt again. The result is an utter indifference to what's going on around her right up until Shido unlocks her emotions.
  • Semantic Superpower: One half of Michael's abilities, "Segva" is the power to "lock" the traits of the object the Cool Key touches. It can lock anything from physical capabilities to abstract concepts, she used the ability to lock her own emotions in the past. It can disable machines, lock away emotions and memories, and stop Earth's rotation.
  • Shout-Out: Her Angel's design and powers heavily resemble a keyblade from Kingdom Hearts.
  • Showgirl Skirt: Her Astral Dress is a short qipao with two long tails at the back.
  • Space Master: The other half of Michael's abilities, "Rataibu" ("Unlock") is to tear open wormholes in the fabric of space-time, allowing Mukuro to send any object (herself included) to anywhere she wants. She uses this to teleport herself, redirect attacks, and summon meteors from who knows where as projectiles.
  • Story-Breaker Power: With Michael's Semantic Superpower and Space Master abilities, Mukuro is perhaps the single most powerful Spirit shown thus far (which is fitting, considering her Angel's name). At full power, she can even stop the rotation of the Earth, which would wipe out the entire surface life.
  • Super Mode: Using "Shifuru" on herself gives her a warrior Astral Dress and turns Michael into a halberd. All of her stats get boosted (except intelligence), and she can fight on par with (and earn praise from) Inverse Tohka.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Defied. When going full-on Yandere for Shido, Mukuro very nearly goes into her Inverse form and attempts to stop the Earth's rotation. Fortunately. Her transformation was averted thanks to Shido talking sense into her at the last moment.
  • Superpower Lottery: Shido comments that her danger level can be compared to, if not outright surpasses, Kurumi and Inverse Spirits. She's even able to fight evenly against Inverted spirits as seen during her fight with Inverse Tohka in volume 15.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives a rather scathing one to Shido, by calling him out on his hypocrisy by claiming to save the Spirits by sealing their powers, while in reality he makes them more vulnerable to threats such as Deus Ex Machina Industries.
  • Thinking Up Portals: Mukuro can open up spatial vortexes that can be used to teleport herself, summon forth meteorites, and redirect incoming attacks.
  • Third-Person Person: She refers to herself as "Muku".
  • The Unfettered: Because of her lack of emotions, Mukuro isn't really mentally affected by anything.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: By sealing off everyone else's memory of Shido, Tohka's subconscious feeling of losing someone important causes her to once again slip into her Inverse form, who immediately goes after Shido's head in retaliation for the "humiliation" he put her through last time.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: She doesn't hesitate to stand up to Inverse Tohka to protect Shido.
  • Yandere: When Shido does manage to reach her heart in volume 15, Mukuro takes love so seriously that she locks away everyone else's memories of him so she can have him for herself, and later tries to stop the Earth's rotation and end all life so nobody can get between them. Luckily, it becomes subverted when Shido talks sense into her and Mukuro abandons her possessive behavior.

    Phantom

Phantom

Voiced by: Aya Endo (Japanese, Date A Live: Rinne Utopia), Kana Hanazawa (Japanese, disguised as Rinne Sonogami in season 3), Emily Neves (English, disguised as Rinne Sonogami in season 3)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_1645.png

The mysterious entity who works behind the scenes, its very existence is only known to the Ratatoskr members (and possibly Westcott).

It was the one who gave Kotori her Sephira Crystal, tranforming her into a Spirit 5 years ago, causing the Great Fire in the process. In present time, she was also the person who informed Kurumi about Shido's existence and strange powers.

Its true appearance and motives are unknown, but it displays great knowledge about the Spirits, and even Shido himself. As the novels go on, it's revealed that Phantom gave Miku a Sephira Crystal two years prior, hinting at the possibility of her carrying more Crystals at her disposal.

  • Ambiguous Gender: Its appearance is completely shrouded in mosaic and even its voice is too garbled to determine its gender. When Origami goes back in time to kill it, she notices that at one point its voice not only sounds female, but it's one that she's heard before.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: While fighting the Spirit-turned Origami five years ago in volume 10, Phantom remains calm and correctly guesses that Kurumi helped Origami Time Travel from the future with her Twelfth Bullet since Phantom has yet to give away Metatron at that point in time. Similarly, in the very next volume, Phantom is able to guess that Shido came from five or six years in the future with Kurumi's help, just by looking at his appearance.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: In volume 11, Phantom shows that it can impersonate other people for the sake of direct interaction. In that volume, Phantom appears to Shido as Rinne (the Original Generation character from Date A Live: Rinne Utopia).
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Phantom evaluates a person based on their potential as Spirits, as it outright states to the now Spirit Origami that it would never pass up an opportunity to find such a powerful vessel for the Sephira Crystal. And yet, when Shido is about to be killed by the Dainsleif Satellite Cannon, Phantom intervenes and stops it, before giving the other Spirits a chance to save him by weakening his power. Also, as she is revealed to be Reine Murasame, she has helped Ratatoskr, Shido and the Spirits on multiple occasions, implying her morality is at least on the whiter side of the spectrum.
  • Code Name: "Phantom" is the code name that Ratatoskr has given it. She doesn't like it.
  • Cryptic Conversation: When Shido is knocked unconscious after his first encounter with Tohka, he gets transferred aboard the Fraxinus, but not before hearing a garbled voice from the entity. Its words before leaving in Volume 11 are so similar that Shido realizes it was the one who spoke to him that day.
Phantom: Finally, we meet again. I'm so glad, but just wait. Just a little while longer. I won't ever let you go again. I won't ever be wrong again. Soon.
  • For Science!: Implied to be its reason for creating Rinne and Mayuri. This is not so obvious in the former's case, but its unusual behavior as Reine when observing the latter suggests that she actually created them for experiment, studying the phenomenons of the two Spirits' birth.
  • The Heavy: While its intentions are (probably) nowhere as malicious as Westcott's, Phantom is still indirectly responsible for every single major event in all arcs, mostly through the use of Sephira Crystals.
  • Literal Genie: Phantom has appeared before a human to grant them Spirit powers at least twice before the story began, and each time was in response to their anguished wish, for better or worse: for Kotori, it was her desire to stop being a crybaby; in Miku's case, she came to hate humanity (especially men) and despaired over the loss of her voice. A third time happens when Origami wishes for greater power in order to defeat the Spirits, in volume 10. And then, it's revealed that Phantom first did this to Nia (as the Second Spirit) and to Mukuro some time later. Nia speculates that Phantom probably did the same with all the other Spirits.
  • Memory-Wiping Crew: This is the same being who erased part of Shido and Kotori's memories during the Great Fire, explaining the holes in their memories. It may or may not also be responsible for the other Spirits' amnesia.
  • Mysterious Parent:
    • When Phantom encounters all the Spirits in Volume 12 (minus Kurumi) after saving Shido, it calls them "my children." When you remember it turns regular humans into Spirits, this implies that all of them used to be human, which is confirmed in Volume 15 by Inverse Tohka.
    • The Stinger of Rinne Utopia implies Phantom has a hand in Rinne's creation and birth, as it is the only one who doesn't forget her after the Ret-Gone. While Rinne may have been an Unwitting Pawn that may have played her role, it's also possible Phantom gave her a Mercy Kill or actually saved her from floating endlessly in Eden's remains, possibly explaining how Phantom used Rinne's form as a disguise in Volume 11 if the game is canon to the main story.
    • As Reine is revealed to be Phantom in Volume 16, plus Reine's suspicious behavior and knowledge about Mayuri in the movie Mayuri Judgment, this implies that she was also involved in Mayuri's birth.
  • Ominous Visual Glitch: Phantom is consistently described as an unknown noise that's nearly invisible. When commander Kannazuki shows Shido a recording of the incident with Kotori five years ago, Phantom was present and right next to Kotori, but only because Shido noticed a blurry image that didn't fit with the rest of the recording. In Volume 10, an attack from Origami temporarily dispels Phantom's noise, where Origami could faintly discern that she was a woman with a familiar voice. Kurumi later manages to force her out of her noise entirely during their battle in Volume 16, exposing her true identity as Reine.
  • Red Baron: Both Kurumi and the Ratatoskr calls it "the Spirit that can turn humans into Spirits" even though up until volume 16 it's unknown what Phantom actually is.
  • Samus Is a Girl: In volume 10, Origami's attacks strip away the noise concealing Phantom's appearance, allowing the former to hear the latter's voice, which apparently reminds Origami of someone familiar. Although she was blinded by her own light-based attack, Origami could faintly discern Phantom as a girl with long hair. It's revealed in Volume 16 she's none other than Reine Murasame.
  • Significant Double Casting: In the three Date a Live Visual Novels Rinne Utopia, Ars Install, and Rio Reincarnation, this being shares a voice with.....well just look at the person doing the voice work and you'll figure it out. Why is this significant? Volume 16 of the light novel reveals that the First Spirit, Phantom, and Reine Murasame are all the same person.
  • Walking Spoiler: This mysterious entity's underlying actions are actually vital to the story, given the basic premise of sealing the Spirits wouldn't actually be feasible without key characters getting powers in the first place. She also has some unknown connection with Shido, and also apparently did something to him she regrets that's become the reasoning for her current actions.

    Mio (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Mio Takamiya

Voiced by: Aya Endo (Japanese)

Code name: "Deus"

Angel: Ain Soph Aur (Flower), Ain Soph (Tree), Ain (Seed)

Astral Dress: Yah

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mio_takamiya.png
A girl who seems to be connected to the Takamiyas, her name was mentioned by Shido when he's overcharged with Spirit powers in Volume 12, causing him to remember bits of his childhood with Mana. Shido claimed that Mio was supposed to be protecting Mana from DEM, but went missing at the same time Mana was abducted by them.

She is actually the Spirit of Origin who came into existence 30 years ago, setting off the catastrophic first Spacequake that wiped out a large chunk of Eurasia and 150 million lives. She was created by DEM's founders Westcott, Ellen and Woodman as a tool for their revenge against humanity, but the latter would fall in love with her on sight and defect from DEM to create Ratatoskr in service of Spirits. Mio met a boy named Shinji Takamiya and gradually fell in love with him, but he was fatally shot by Westcott for interfering with his attempts to retrieve her. Unable to save Shinji's life, Mio resorted to reincarnating him as Shido, endowing him with the ability to seal the powers of the Sephira crystals that she would proceed to create, ensuring an undying love this time. She sacrificed several girls to purify the crystals, earning the grudge of Kurumi Tokisaki for killing her best friend, Sawa Yamauchi.

  • Adaptational Modesty: In the anime version, when she emerges from Kurumi, she is wearing a dress and sandals instead of naked.
  • Angst Nuke: Witnessing Shinji's death caused Mio to unleash a massive explosion that destroyed the surrounding city.
  • Arch-Enemy: Kurumi hates her guts for turning her into an Unwitting Pawn to kill out-of-control Spirits, one of which was her best friend Sawa. Her ultimate goal is to go back 30 years to when Mio first appeared and kill her (later revised to preventing her birth in the first place).
  • Blank Slate: When she first appeared in this world, Mio had the mentality of an infant. However, through various exposure to different forms of media, she quickly gains self-awareness and intellect at an astonishing rate.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Refining Sephira Crystals required her to kill countless of lives (which is morally questionable by itself), and Mio enlisted Kurumi's help to get rid of her first failed humans-turned-Spirits, without informing the girl about what they were really doing. This eventually caused Kurumi to kill her best friend Sawa when the latter was given the Camael Crystal by Mio herself.
  • Born as an Adult: Mio was "born" thirty years ago during the first Spacequake and first appeared as a naked teenage girl.
  • Chest Burster: After Kurumi's shadow apparently "eats" her, she ends up killing her by popping out of her chest. When Kurumi is warned by Shido of her impending demise in the following timeline, she manages to transfer her powers to a clone before biting the dust.
  • Complete Immortality: On top of not physically aging, she's basically impervious to damage unless her own power is used against her.
  • Creating Life Is Unforeseen: She accidentally created Tohka while trying to purify a Sephira Crystal on her own.
  • Death Seeker: Shido claims in volume 19 that Mio gave birth to him in order to create an existence that could kill her so she can truly reunite with Shinji. Mio doesn't refute the claim.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Shinji was her entire world. After he was killed by Westcott, Mio fell into despair and she made bringing Shinji back as Shido her entire purpose.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • Didn't expect Kurumi to be able to stop her inversion midway by reversing time to an extent before she fell in despair. Likewise, the same thing with Kurumi using the same powers to restore her memories after Mio erased them.
    • She was also caught off-guard when Tohka converts her throne into armor instead of merging it with her sword to create Halvanhelev, as Mio only knows the basic powers of each Sephira Crystal and not all their potential applications. Tohka would then give her the first injury of her entire life.
  • Doppelgänger Gets Same Sentiment: She fell in love with Shinji Takamiya, but he was shot dead by Westcott. She absorbed his corpse to impregnate herself with a biologically identical boy and give him the ability to seal the Sephira Crystals she would start creating. She eventually planned to give Shido memories of his previous life and erase the memories of his current one. However, Shido eventually makes her accept that even with the same body and memories as Shinji, he'll never truly be Shinji.
  • The Dreaded: After learning about her powers, Kurumi claims there's no way she could ever kill the First Spirit. And sure enough, when she finally made her appearance as Mio Takamiya, she killed off Shido's entire harem with ridiculous ease.
  • Ethereal White Dress: Her Astral Dress is a beautifully elaborate white dress with the same transparent color as water droplets.
  • First Girl After All: With a twist: She was the first Spirit to be rescued by Shidou as his previous incarnation Shinji Takamiya, who was killed by Westcott in his attempt to escape from DEM's clutches with Mio. The current Shidou was reincarnated by Mio as her biological son and was adopted into the Itsuka family, until his history repeats when Tohka Yatogami manifested into the world.
  • Flowers of Nature: Her Angels are all plant-themed: Ain Soph Aur is a flower, Ain Soph is a tree, and Ain is a seed. Her Astral Dress also has flower ornaments, designed like cherry blossoms, around her bosom and in her hair.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Shinji won her a bear plushy which she and her clone Reine carry around everywhere, even with their Astral Dresses equipped.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She's willing to kill all the Spirits and inflict a Death of Personality on Shido to reunite with Shinji, but Shido eventually gets her to accept that Shinji is gone for good, leading to her fighting alongside everyone against Westcott.
  • Hero Killer: Volume 18 consists of her flat-out slaughtering all the Spirits to retrieve their Sephira Crystals. However, this was undone when Shido used Vav to travel back 24 hours before Kurumi's death to prevent it.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: To prevent Westcott's Qemetiel from causing unparalleled destruction, she sends Shido and the Spirits out of harms' way so she can counter it with Ain. The resulting collision kills both her and Westcott.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: She implies that she was suicidal after Shinji’s death, but her body was simply too durable for any conventional method to work.
  • The Law of Diminishing Defensive Effort: She can stand perfectly still while nullifying any attack that the Spirits throw at her. When Tohka gets a Heroic Second Wind after absorbing power from all other Spirits (including Mio herself), she realizes that she actually needs to dodge and takes slight damage to her Astral Dress.
  • Light Is Not Good: Her Astral Dress gives off a divine appearance, including a large halo behind her with with ten stars. Her introduction in the present story has her systematically killing all the Spirits to retrieve their Sephira Crystals, with all ten stars brightly glowing when the deed is done.
  • Long-Lost Relative: The brief memory of Mio saying "I love you" to Shido in Volume 14 implies she may be their cousin or biological mother. Volume 17 reveals that Mio is actually adopted into the Takamiya family after being discovered by Shinji, and that love confession was out of gratitude for her newly discovered love due to her Really Was Born Yesterday mentality.
  • Love Makes You Evil: All her villainy is motivated by her love for Shinji and desperate wish to bring him back to life, even if it means killing millions and turning Shido into a vessel for him.
  • Magical Barefooter: Her Astral Dress leaves her feet exposed.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: She's an immortal Spirit who fell in love with a normal human teenager. When her lover Shinji got killed by Wescott, her awareness of a human's fleeting lifespan compared to hers gave her a disturbing resolve to recreate him into an immortal being so he could be her eternal lover.
  • Monster Progenitor: Kurumi claims in Volume 4 that all Spirits exist because of her. Inverse Tohka explains how the First Spirit is the origin of all in Volume 15, and the First herself confirmed it during Kurumi's flashback in Volume 16.
  • The Mourning After: Shinji was the only man she ever loved and his death was her Start of Darkness. Bringing him back to life by turning Shido into his vessel has been her goal for the past 30 years.
  • Naked First Impression: Shinji first met her nude, as she wasn't summoned with clothing, leading Mana to think they'd been getting it on when she first sees them together.
  • Naked on Arrival: During the actual story, she emerges from Kurumi nude, gaining her Astral Dress after combining with her Older Alter Ego Reine.
  • Necromantic: To bring back Shinji, she's willing to sacrifice several human hosts to purify the Sephira Crystals, cause a Death of Personality to Shido, and murder all the Spirits.
  • Never Given a Name: Like Tohka, she was nameless until Shinji named her.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Only after borrowing the power of all the other Spirits (including Mio herself) can Tohka even put a scratch on her.
  • No Ontological Inertia: After her death, the Spirits' powers disappear, reverting them back into humans and causing Tohka, a pure spirit, to disappear.
  • One-Hit Kill: Ain Soph Aur releases light particles that instantly cease the functions of anything, biological or mechanical, unfortunate enough to touch them. Just being in the Angel's vicinity will kill anyone without significant protection.
  • Parental Incest: Sort of. Her plan to live forever with her lover begins with her giving birth to his reincarnation. She doesn't seem to care much about the implications, but then again, she is clearly not in a healthy state of mind. It's noted in Volume 19 that Mio (as Reine) does feel some level of motherly affection towards Shido since she is his Truly Single Parent, but it's a big deal that she doesn't consider Shinji and Shido to be the same person.
  • Physical Goddess: As the Spirit of Origin, Mio is the primordial Spirit responsible for the creation of other Spirits. Her power is immense, with numerous characters noting that her full might is the equivalent to a god.
  • Pure Magic Being: The First is composed of pure magical energy and can manifest a physical form.
  • Redemption Equals Death: In Volume 19, she counters Westcott's Qemetiel with her Ain for a Mutual Kill, realizing as she does so how much trouble she's caused the world with her spacequakes and Sephira Crystals.
  • Remember the New Guy?: A unique case, as Shido mentions her name to Mana in Volume 12 despite the fact that he's never done so before. The moment he does however, Mana recalls a bit about her. Likewise when Mana asks him about Mio later, he briefly remembers her say she loves him.
  • Shadow Archetype: Mio is what the other Spirit girls, especially Tohka, would become if they lost Shido forever and fell into despair; obsessive, ruthless and determined to bring back their loved one no matter how many people they have to sacrifice.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Shinji. They were in love, but DEM arrived to take Mio away and Shinji was killed by Westcott when he tried to run away with Mio.
  • Start of Darkness: 30 years ago, Mio saw Shinji being murdered by Wescott while trying to protect her. This had led to her turning several girls into Spirits before killing them in order to purify the Sephira Crystals, and from there, she sown the seeds for Kurumi's Start of Darkness as well.
  • Story-Breaker Power: She has THREE Angels: Ain Soph Aur summons a flower that disperses One-Hit Kill petals, Ain Soph summons a tree that puts the surrounding area under her complete control, and Ain simply causes a Cessation of Existence for anything she targets. Nia lampshades that her powers are cheat-level and would be completely inappropriate to write into a story because such a character would be invincible.
  • Stylish Sunhats: Mio wore a sunhat alongside a white one-piece dress for her date with Shinji, who thought she looked beautiful in it.
  • Together in Death: Mio finally reunites with Shinji in the afterlife after her own death.
  • Tragic Keepsake: She (and Reine by extension) always carry around the teddy bear Shinji bought her. It’s even attached to her Astral Dress. The only time she parts with it is during her final confrontation with Westcott so it can survive their Mutual Kill.
  • Truly Single Parent: She absorbed Shinji's dead body and gave birth to the boy known as Shido. She also regards all the Spirits as her daughters, having created their Sephira Crystals, but special mention goes to Tohka for being born directly from her own Crystal, for which Inverse Tohka refers to Mio as their mother.
  • The Unfettered: She would stop at nothing to restore Shinji back as her eternal lover, from reincarnating him in her womb as Shido to spending a good 30 years in order to purify the Sephira Crystals, sacrificing countless girls in the process.
  • Walking Spoiler: She is the Spirit of Origin created 30 years ago alongside the first Spacequake, and her desperation to reunite with Shinji after his death drives much of the story.
  • Yandere: As she had stated to Kotori right before killing her and everyone else aboard the Fraxinus, even though their friendship were genuine, she is willing to sacrifice even that if it would bring Shinji back to her side. It culminates to her going as far as personally killing Shido's entire harem, which is only averted by one of Kurumi's clones reminding Shido that he's sealed Vav, which allows him to mentally time travel to the past.
  • You Cannot Grasp the True Form: Ain is described as "the Angel of Void" and Shido isn't sure what exactly it was because of the blinding light it produced. The cover of Volume 18 calls it a "???-type" Angel. It's later clarified to be a seed.

A mysterious Spirit who faces the main cast in the last volumes. She's the final antagonist of the series.

  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Five claws floating over her right hand can cut through even the fabric of spacetime. They can be merged together to create Sandalphon; her 10th sword is actually Nahemah.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Surrounded by ten swords, each of which can channel the power of one of the Ten Angels.
  • Alternate Self: She's actually Tohka from a parallel world, who completely lost it when her world's Shido died.
  • Beast of the Apocalypse: A sentence describing her uses the same kanji used to described the Beast of Revelation in the Japanese version of the New Testament.
  • The Berserker: Most of her "lines" are an anguished scream, and she earned the codename “Beast” for attacking everything in sight.
  • Cleavage Window: Her Astral Dress has a huge opening that exposes her cleavage.
  • Despair Event Horizon: In the alternate timeline she comes from, Shido's death led to Tohka turning into Beast, killing the other spirits, and eventually destroying the world.
  • Empty Eyes: Her eyes are described to have a hollow look as if she has lost all purpose in life.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: She has red eyes with white pupils.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: One of her Astral Dress' stockings is slightly longer than the other, with one covering up to her knee and the other being right below it. Also, one of her long gloves doesn't cover her hand while the other does.
  • I Choose to Stay: She chooses to stay in her world so as not to leave behind the memories of her Shido.
  • Locked into Strangeness: Her hair is a stark white like her skin, but it was originally dark purple (or "night-colored") before hitting the Despair Event Horizon, and the original color can still be seen at the tips.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Upon regaining her sanity, she openly weeps upon seeing the surviving humans of the world she destroyed.
  • Mystical White Hair: A supernatural being with pure white hair.
  • Name Amnesia: Only line she speaks in volume 21 other than a scream is telling Shido she's long since forgotten her name. She is later revealed to be the Tohka of an alternate world where Shido died.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: More so than any other Spirit given all her abilities and barely sentient mind. She almost completely devastated her own world.
  • Post-Final Boss: A year after Westcott and Mio's Mutual Kill seemingly rids the world of Spirits, she suddenly shows up and starts wreaking havoc.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She has red eyes and little thought beyond ravaging the world.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: After parting ways with Shido, she encounters her world's Kurumi, who implies that Tohka only killed one of her clones to obtain Zafkiel's blade and offers to help her fix all the death and destruction she caused to her world.
  • Victor Gains Loser's Powers: Gains the other girls' Angels as swords after murdering them in her timeline.
  • Wolverine Claws: Her weapon is a set of five floating, giant nails that hover around her hand as a claw.
