Empire/Republic of Tal'Dorei

The major power on the continent of Tal'Dorei. Founded by the first Sovereign, Zan Tal'Dorei, at the conclusion of the Scattered War, the Empire stood for nearly three centuries. Following the attack of the Chroma Conclave and the devastation visited upon much of Emon and other major cities, the Empire was reconstituted into the Republic of Tal'Dorei, ruled by the Tal'Dorei Council that had previously advised the Sovereign.

Emon, the City of Fellowship

Capital of the Republic of Tal'Dorei. Situated on the western coast of the continent, Emon is a major trading hub on sea, land, and air, as it houses one of Exandria's few skyports. The city is divided into several districts divided by walls. In the center rests the Cloudtop District, home to the nobility of the city as well as the Sovereign's Palace, which continues to serve as the Tal'Dorei Council's meeting place. North of the Cloudtop is the Military District, with the marketplaces of the Abdar's Prominade to the east. Below the markets lies the Erudite Quarter, home to the Alabaster Lyceum and Emon's several schools and colleges. The Central District is west of the Erudite Quarter and is the largest section of Emon and home to much of its middle class, bordering the port to the west and Temple District to the north, which is also connected to the Cemetery District. Outside the walls are the sprawling Upper Slums to the north of the Temple District, while the smaller and newer Lower Slums lay outside the southern walls of the Central District.

  • City Guards: The city is protected by a force of guards called the Arms of Emon.
  • Non-Indicative Name: The Lower Slums are actually fairly well-off, as most residents are farmers that provide a fairly large portion of Emon's produce. The name comes from the historical origins of the district as refugees denied entry into the city by King Trist Drassig.

Royal Family

    Sovereign Uriel

Sovereign Uriel Tal'Dorei III

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uriel_taldorei_the_legend_of_vox_machina.png
Race: Human
Voiced by: Khary Payton

The human Sovereign and leader of the continent of Tal'Dorei and the city of Emon. He met Vox Machina when they freed him and his family from possession by a treachery demon.

  • Abdicate the Throne: Decides to step down as Sovereign and end monarchal rule of Tal'Dorei by making it a republic ruled by the Council.
  • Badass Boast: This guy might be preventing Vox Machina from stopping the Briarwoods, but damn if he doesn't know how to hold his power. He's able to shut up Tiberius with a sentence.
Uriel: You are in my court now, Stormwind.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Uriel is fairly easygoing and extremely reasonable for an ruler, but the few times he is angry it is clear that crossing him is a very poor idea, as Riskel Daxio learned.
  • Big Good: He is the benevolent ruler of Tal'Dorei and the most influential of Vox Machina's allies. Unfortunately, this makes him a massive target for bad guys.
  • Demonic Possession: He and his family were taken over pre-stream by a glabrezu (treachery demon) to cause chaos and strife within the continent of Tal'Dorei.
  • Due to the Dead: The Tal'Dorei campaign guide reveals that a grand tomb to Uriel was built after the reclamation of Emon that houses his ashes.
  • The Good King: When he isn't being possessed or mind-controlled, Uriel is a highly reasonable ruler who cares deeply for all of his subjects regardless of class. His care for his subjects is why he steps down as Sovereign, as he wants them to have a ruler who is not so susceptible to being controlled.
  • Happily Married: Despite the troubles that plagued their marriage recently, like demonic possession and the kidnapping of their son Gren, Uriel and his wife Salda love each other very much.
  • Killed Off for Real: Gilmore confirms that Uriel was killed. He even saw what was left of the corpse afterwards. The Tal'Dorei Campaign Guide states that he was killed by Raishan's poison breath.
  • King Bob the Nth: He is the third Uriel Tal'Dorei to rule as Sovereign.
  • Race Lift: In the original teaser for the animated series, he was Caucasian. In the official release, he's a black man and instead of Matt, African-American actor Khary Payton takes over the role.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Is a very understanding ruler and gives Vox Machina a lot of leniency. This, however, has its limits as seen when the party attacks the Briarwoods, his welcome guests, in the middle of his palace. On the other hand, being charmed by the Briarwoods probably takes him out of this position. This is reinforced when after Vox Machina deals with the Briarwoods and the charm on him is removed; he thanks the team for what they've done, offers a sincere apology, and returns them to their place on the Council of Tal'Dorei. He even agrees to Percy's request to establish Grayskull Keep as an embassy to Whitestone.
  • Retirony: As Sovereign Uriel announces that he is stepping down as Sovereign, four ancient dragons attack the city of Emon and demolish the palace with him in it.
  • Sympathetic Inspector Antagonist: Sure, he might think Vox Machina are criminals, but it's not his fault he's caught in a web of bureaucracy and political machinations. Giving Vox Machina a fair trial was, considering the evidence against them, remarkably restrained. And from his perspective, the party did attack people who he sees as friends and badly disrupt a diplomatic event. Oh, and he's being charmed by the Briarwoods, which probably doesn't help.
  • Weak-Willed: Comes to view himself as this after both the glabrezu and the Briarwoods dominated his mind and nearly brought Tal'Dorei to ruin. The reveal that his childhood friend and advisor Riskel Daxio was a willing ally of the Briarwoods further causes Uriel to doubt his judgment and ability to lead without being compromised. All of which leads to him stepping down as Sovereign and turning the kingdom into a republic.

    Salda Tal'Dorei

Empress Salda Tal'Dorei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/salda_taldorei_the_legend_of_vox_machina.png
Race: Human
Voiced by: Cree Summer

The wife of Uriel and mother of Odessa, Illiya, and Gren.

  • Demonic Possession: Alongside her children, Salda was under the influence of a glabrezu named Jurazel during one of the pre-stream adventures.
  • Demoted to Extra: She had a larger role in the story in the pre-stream sessions, but only has a handful of minor appearances in the broadcasted games.
  • Good Parents: Her top priority is her children, who have endured a lot of hardship in recent years. Salda also decides to take care of Hunin and Kyor, two Aasimar children Vex rescued from slavery in the City of Brass.
  • Happily Married: Although her possession by Jurazel and the kidnapping of their son Gren put their marriage through hell, she and Uriel are quite devoted to each other. It was Salda's efforts in the aftermath of Emon's reclamation that led to a grand tomb being built to honor Uriel.
  • Modest Royalty: She and Uriel were never overly ostentatious to begin with, but after the fall of Emon she begins dressing more simply. The last time Vox Machina sees her on the stream, she is dressed in clothing that would make it hard to tell her apart from a farmer.
  • Put on a Bus: After the end of the Chroma Conclave arc, Salda departs Whitestone with her family to return to Emon, and due to most of Vox Machina now making their home away from there she and her family are not seen again for the rest of the campaign.

Council of Tal'Dorei

    Allura Vysoren

Arcanist Allura Vysoren

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/allura_4.jpg
Race: Human
Class: Wizard (School of Abjuration)
Voiced by: Indira Varma

A figure of great importance in Emon and one of Vox Machina's most powerful and trustworthy allies, Allura lives in the Ivory Tower in the Cloudtop District and is a member of both the Tal'Dorei Council and the Arcana Pansophical, a collective of powerful magic users. She is one of Lady Kima's closest friends and confidantes, the one who sent the party on the mission to retrieve the paladin, and someone who helps them try to figure out what to do next when they return.

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: In the webshow, Lady Allura is very friendly with Vox Machina by the time of the Briarwood arc. In The Legend of Vox Machina she barely knows them, and the party has had far fewer impressive exploits by the time of the Briarwood arc. As such, she's barely tolerant of Vox Machina.
  • The Archmage: A renowned spellcaster and an important political figure in Emon.
  • Bizarrchitecture: The inside of her ivory tower is a complicated structure with passageways and doors that don't quite align with its outside.
  • Counterspell: She is able to block the spells of other magic users.
  • Court Mage: Although there are other magic users on the Tal'Dorei Council, Allura's official title is Master of Arcana, and she is the foremost expert on mystical matters brought before the court.
  • Disappointed in You: Towards Tiberius after his alignment shift, which causes the dragonborn to drown his sorrows.
  • Disintegrator Ray: Her spell book contains "Disintegrate," a damage-dealing 6th-level spell which disintegrates any target that it drops to zero hit points.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Has this with Keyleth after it's revealed the Fire Ashari tribe may have been wiped out when Thordak escaped his prison, and Keyleth thinks her visit to the Plane of Fire during her Aramentae was the reason. Allura sets her straight by pointing out the stone anchoring Thordak to the plane was very large and would have taken an enormous amount of raw power to shatter - power that Keyleth, still in training, does not have.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Joins Vox Machina alongside Kima for the final fight against Raishan.
  • Happily Married: Revealed to have gotten married to Kima in a quiet ceremony during the time skip.
  • Hidden Depths: She was once part of an adventuring party that sealed the red dragon Thordak into the Elemental Plane of Fire and devised the magical methods to keep him there.
  • Ironic Name: Not Allura herself, but where she lives: the expression "ivory tower" is usually used to criticize people who analyze the world without experiencing its hardships. Allura might appear that way at first, but she's one of the people who sealed Thordak, and she certainly has had experience with challenge.
  • Ms. Exposition: She tells the party about Thordak's origins.
  • Mundane Utility: Repeatedly uses Mage Hand to make tea during her first appearance.
  • Not So Above It All: Joins the party in drinking from the sandkeg and getting smashed prior to the final fight with Raishan.
  • Not So Stoic: In campaign 3 she follows Bell's Hells when they saunter across the Godzilla Threshold by seeking help from Morrigan, a Famed In-Story, insanely powerful fey hag. Poor Allura looks like she's two breaths away from shitting herself.
  • Official Couple: After reuniting, she and Kima spent time rekindling their relationship and now they're together once more.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Besides trusting Vox Machina enough to give them the mission to rescue her close friend, she also listens to them about the seriousness of the Horn of Orcus. In addition, Allura supports them in their opposition to the Briarwoods, noting she suspected that they were untrustworthy when she met them.
  • Ship Tease: Tiberius is definitely attracted to her and she seemed likewise interested (the party encouraged Tiberius to ask her out) and even agreed to go on a date with him before the Briarwoods arrived. But once he killed the helpless old woman, she was deeply disappointed and he never quite managed to earn her forgiveness (or even explain the extenuating circumstances) before leaving the party. After Tiberius leaves the show, she instead has an increasing amount of Ship Tease with Kima.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: She speaks rather formally, and yet...
    • After Hotis is killed by Pike after coming after Vax, she says that now Vax and Pike are now both on its shit list.
    • Upon learning that Grog pulled a card from the Deck of Many Things, her first response is a quiet "Shit."
  • Teleportation: She is capable of using Misty Step to go 30 feet from her current position. On a more powerful level, Allura can teleport herself and eight other people through her regular teleport spell, and can also create link to several teleportation sigils that she is aware of and create a teleportation circle to them. Vox Machina also hired Allura to create a teleportation sigil within Greyskull Keep.
  • The Bus Came Back: Appears in Campaign 2, now in her fifties, as a friend of Archmage Yussa. Allura is also the Master of Arcana on the Council of Tal'dorei.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Kima's Tomboy. While Allura is very refined and composed, she embraces her femininity a lot more than Kima, even braiding the latter's hair and persuading her to wear a dress for formal occasions.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: She instills confidence in Keyleth after they discover the Fire Ashari village has been wiped out by Thordak by insisting that she is strong enough to handle this tragedy and can become even stronger.

    Asum Emring

Seeker Asum Emring

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/assum_emring.jpg
Race: Halfling
Class: Ranger

A ranger and member of the Council of Tal'Dorei. He serves as the city's Master of Secrets.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Is charmed by the Briarwoods in "Crimson Diplomacy" and forced to fight against Vox Machina, until he's restored by Keyleth in the following episode.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He once worked with the Clasp, but managed to shake off the record of his involvement. He still deals with them as a part of his job.
  • Facial Markings: The rights side of his face is covered in tattoos.
  • The Mentor: He teaches Vex the Skirmisher Stealth ranger ability. The Tal'Dorei Campagin Guide Reborn reveals he also trained Odessa Tal'Dorei to become his successor as Seeker.
  • Never Heard That One Before: He is not amused by Vox Machina making a pun of his name. We can assume that it happened many times before their turn.
  • Pretend to Be Brainwashed: Following Keyleth lifting Sylas Briarwoods' charm from him, Asum continues to claim that he was not working with Vox Machina to investigate the Briarwoods. He later stops by Greyskull and explains that he had to keep the charade up due to Uriel also being brainwashed and his suspicions that there could be other spies within the court.
  • Properly Paranoid: Has his suspicions about the Briarwoods, and is proven right when several informants sent to investigate the goings-on at Whitestone mysteriously resign without warning and disappear.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He is Vox Machina's second closest ally on the Council after Allura, trusting them to aid him in secret investigations.
  • The Reliable One: For Uriel. As spymaster, he will do whatever he must to keep Tal'Dorei safe.
  • The Spymaster: As the Master of Secrets, he's in charge of espionage and intelligence-gathering through clandestine means, with a vast network of operatives.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Is able to appear and disappear without Vox Machina noticing. As a ranger, this is pretty natural, and Vex has him teach her some of his stealth tricks shortly before the party departs Emon to confront the Briarwoods.

    Riskel Daxio

Lord Riskel Daxio

Race: Elf
Class: Fighter (Battle Master)

"Do what you must. But I am his blood. His dominion will call back, call me back when everything else has fallen into nothing."

A member of the Tal'Dorei council and the city's Master of Trade. He's also responsible for the city's construction and helped create Vox Machina's keep.

  • Childhood Friend: He has been friends with Uriel since childhood, which is why his betrayal cuts so deep.
  • Defiant to the End: He is totally unapologetic to Uriel for his long-standing treason and calmly sticks his neck out for his beheading.
  • False Friend: His comments about Uriel after being exposed as a spy make his contempt and manipulation of the Sovereign quite clear.
  • Get It Over With: The party's comical questioning of him, in particular their quibbling about his supposed resurrection, leads him to pleading with Uriel to hasten his execution.
  • Holy Burns Evil: The only thing that scares him is Pike's holy power because he fears it might prevent him from reaching Vecna after his death.
  • The Mole: Discovered to be a traitor working for the Briarwoods, as well as secretly being a member of the Remnants, a cult that worships Vecna, when correspondence between him and them was found in Whitestone.
  • My Death Is Just the Beginning: Standard trait of Vecna's worshippers, since Vecna has power over undeath.
  • Off with His Head!: Beheaded by Grog as his death sentence for working with the Briarwoods.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: He tried to flee the city when news arrived that the Briarwoods had been unseated and their ritual had failed. Thanks to Vox Machina, he didn't get real far.
  • Strong and Skilled: As a Battle Master, he mixes his formidable strength with deft combat maneuvers such as tripping his opponents so he can take advantage of their prone status.

    Tofor Brotoras

Guardian Tofor Brotoras

Race: Silver Dragonborn
Class: Paladin

A paladin of Bahamut who serves as the Master of Defense.

  • An Arm and a Leg: She lost one of her arms during the struggle against the Chroma Conclave.
  • Bling of War: Wears full plate armor that has symbols of Bahamut adorning it.
  • Fantastic Racism: She is immediately hostile towards Tiberius upon meeting him. It is eventually revealed that her disdain for Tiberius stems from his being a 'Skywalker' (the noble class of Draconia, who are born with tails), and her being a 'Ravinite' (the slave class of Draconia, who don't have tails). Tiberius feels the exact same level of Fantastic Racism for Tofor, only ever referring to her as "peasant" and "commoner".
  • Good Is Not Nice: Although a Paladin in service of a Good deity, Tofor is often rude, has little patience for social conventions, and is prejudiced against Dragonborn with tails.

    Brom Goldhand

Arbiter Brom Goldhand

Race: Human
Class: Cleric

A cleric of Ioun and the new Master of Law on the Council of Tal'Dorei.

  • Minor Major Character: Although a major political figure with several appearances, Brom never plays much of a role in the plot or develops any distinct personality traits.
  • Rank Up: He was formerly a captain of the guard before being appointed the new Master of Law.
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: According to Gilmore, Brom was killed during the Chroma Conclave's attack on Emon. However, he later reappears alive, albeit with burn scars all over his body.

Greyskull Keep

    Jarett Howarth

Jarett Howarth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jarett_howarth.jpg
"It warms my heart to see you all safe."
Race: Human
Class: Fighter / Rogue
Voiced by: Eugene Byrd

One of the guards Vox Machina hired to guard Greyskull Keep, Jarett hails from the city of Ank'Harel on the continent of Marquet. Whenever Vox Machina has a prisoner, guest, or item they want a close eye kept on, they assign Jarett to keep watch. Later leaves the employ of Vox Machina to serve in Whitestone as a Captain of the Pale Guard.

  • Action Survivor: The party brings him along to fight Thordak, who is far above his weight class. He's nearly insta-killed by the dragon's fire breath and spends much of the fight in a panic after failing his saving throw against fear. Even with these disadvantages, he manages to find the mark with his crossbow more often than not.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Occasionally remarks on how stressful it can be to work for Vox Machina, such as when he had to guard a prisoner alongside an elemental.
Keyleth: How did that work? Just curious, it was kinda of a test run.
Jarrett: Yeah, um, it was...unsettling, to be perfectly honest.
Keyleth: Good! Good, that's what I was going for.
Jarrett: Ah...um. I am not comfortable with haphazardly tethered creatures from other realms. Historically, it has gone very poorly. So that was good to know!
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: Wields a crossbow in combat as he prefers to stay at a distance from the fighting, but does carry a shortsword or rapier in case he does need to fight in close quarters.
  • The Captain: He works as Captain of the Guard for Greyskull Keep, and later serves as this for Whitestone after Percy and Vex move there permanently.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was forced to flee Ank'Harel for committing an unspecified crime. According to post-campaign reveals, he was from the lower-class and fell in love with a noble girl. After their romance was discovered, he was forced to flee or be executed by her family.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man:
  • Intoxication Ensues: Takes a swig of the Sandkeg liquor and gets immediately smashed, complete with a lisp.
Jarett: I honethly don't even know if you're real right now, I am tho fucked up on thith.
  • Punch-Clock Hero: He is up for any dangerous task or adventurous heroics his employers ask of him, as long as the pay is good. After he is nearly strangled to death by an Invisible Stalker, he requests a raise.
  • The Reliable One: If there is a small but important (or completely unimportant and ridiculous) task that Vox Machina can't take care of themselves, then Jarett is often the one they have handle it.
  • Ship Tease: Vex is fond enough of him to offer a bonus from her personal funds, almost the Vex equivalent of a dozen red roses. However, as the relationship between Vex and Percy progresses, Jarett's relationship with her becomes one of teasing friendship.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: For Campaign 3. He doesn't appear, but his correspondence with his Old Friend Oshad "The Anger" Breshio back in Jrusar is what tips Keyleth off that the attempt on her life that killed Orym's husband and father-in-law was not an isolated incident, and leads to her sending Orym to check it out. If not for Jarrett's presence half a world away, the Ruby Vanguard's moves in Marquet would have gone completely unnoticed by Vox Machina.
  • The Straight Man: He has the good humor to play along with Scanlan's jokes by pretending to be Literal-Minded.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Matt describes him as dark complexion and quite handsome and everyone in Vox Machina agrees.

    Laina Yor

Laina Yor

Race: Human

A plump and cheerful human housekeeper hired by Vox Machina to clean the keep and prepare their meals.

  • Kindly Housekeeper: A perfect example of this trope, being plump, constantly cheerful (with the exception of dragon attacks), and a wonderful cook.
  • Supreme Chef: Her food is some of the best that Vox Machina's had and they all look forward to her meals.

    Erwen Dastell

Erwen Dastell

Race: Halfling

An old man who serves as the butler of Greyskull keep. He does administrative stuff like watching their mail, delivering messages and overseeing their other employees.

  • The Face: Presumably for the sake of simplicity, he presents questions or concerns on behalf of the keep's staff. For instance, when the staff wants to be paid in advance, just in case their employers go off on a long-term mission and die, Erwen is the one to make that request.
  • The Jeeves: He is the keep's butler and Matt portrays him as a stuffy and proper gentleman.
  • Number Two: He's basically middle-management between the rank-and-file servants and the keep's masters.

Civilians

    Shaun Gilmore

Shaun Gilmore

Race: Human
Class: Sorcerer (Runechild)
Voiced by: Matt Mercer (Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire), Sunil Malhotra (The Legend of Vox Machina)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gilmore.jpg

Every adventuring party needs to shopping once in a while to restock on potions and other magical items. Vox Machina frequents Gilmore's Glorious Goods, owned and operated by Gilmore himself. Everyone calls him Gilmore. He's also Vox Machina's official sponsor.

  • Ambiguously Human: There were hints that Gilmore might be a supernatural creature pretending to be human. When the cast hears that he fought Thordak, alone, and survived, they suspect that he might truly be a dragon himself. His reply is, " No, but wouldn't that be sexy". He turns out to be a rune child.
  • Agent Peacock: Gilmore is fabulous, flamboyant...and very, very fearsome when he gets into an actual fight.
  • Bad Boss: A downplayed take played very much for laughs. He doesn't seem to be a bad boss, just rather frustrating to work for. Having to haggle with Vex didn't do much to improve his employee's day, either.
  • Bazaar of the Bizarre: Gilmore's Glorious Goods is a shop that sells all kinds of magical odds and ends, as well as things that can be used in Item Crafting along with books that teach the reader how to use them.
  • Beware the Silly Ones:
    • Gilmore may be faaaaaabulous and generally serve as comic relief, but he knows when to drop pretenses and get serious.
    • When offering a line of credit to the party, he says that it must be paid within a month "or you will be hunted". He is not joking.
  • Big Beautiful Man: Gilmore is described as being pleasantly heavyset and much stronger than one would expect from a wizard, as well as being colorful and very handsome.
  • Breakout Character: Gilmore was popular within the cast, but once he was introduced into the show, he quickly became just as popular as the main cast. Its telling that when an official mod for Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire was created using the cast of campaign one, Gilmore was put in despite not being a core member of the player group.
  • Camp Gay: Oh, he is so very very fabulous. He has quite a liking for Vax, who if nothing else doesn't seem to mind the attention. Gilmore's outfit is even described as being the wizard robe equivalent of a track suit.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: Even after Thordak nearly kills him, he's joking and smiling when Vox Machina finds him, and makes wisecracks the entire way back to their keep.
  • Cool Old Guy: When he returns in Exandria Unlimited. He's in his 60s and lampshades his age a few times but he's still a massively successful businessman, knowledgeable arcanist and all around fun dude. The party are all awed by him and have heard stories of his past adventures, with Opal in particular having a transparent crush on him.
  • Distressed Dude: Nearly killed in episode 113 by Vox Machina, as he was captured, unmoving, and unresisting. Arkhan's natural 1 helped spare him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He is a very shrewd businessman who deals in many items, including a "potion of shit-scry" that Scanlan used to spy on people. He said he would hunt the party down if they didn't pay back a line of credit on time. However, he runs his business 100% honestly and steers clear of transactions involving cursed items like the Robe of Flaying
Gilmore: I deal with above-the-board magical items.
  • Friendly Shopkeeper: He can get quite invested in the groups that come through his shop, including Vox Machina and the Crown Keepers from Exandria Unlimited, providing helpful advice and reasonable discounts to aid them.
  • Has a Type: He and Vax danced and flirted with each other constantly. In Exandria Unlimited and in Reborn, he's married to an elven man.
  • Grail in the Garbage: Gilmore has many mysterious things in his backroom, magical items that he has acquired but has not gotten around to examining. He'll get to them eventually, when he has time. According to the Reborn campagin guide, there is a small chance that some of those items are legendary rarity.
  • Hidden Depths: Matt has alluded to the fact that he is much more powerful than he seems. At least partly confirmed in Episode 41, where he apparently faced Thordak and lived — and even managed to save Uriel's family in the process. Proven further in Episode 58 when he single-handedly imploded an assassin that tried to kill him, and again in Episode 79 when he joins Vox Machina as a part of the group that takes on Thordak. Though Gilmore was wounded several times in the battle, he also got in several powerful spells against the Cinder King, including Disintegrate. There are also a few passing references to him being a Runechild, which, according to the Tal'dorei Campaign Setting book, is a very rare condition that makes one a very powerful mage.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: When Vax tells him that he's in love with someone else note  and can't lead Gilmore on any more, he's disappointed but accepting and happy to still be Vax's friend and confidant despite his heartbreak.
  • Last-Name Basis: As Mercer puts it, "Nobody is on a first name basis with Gilmore"... except for the party as of late.
    • Hilariously, even Gilmore's parents refer to him as Gilmore although this is somewhat excusable in that "Gilmore" isn't their last name - see Meaningful Rename below.
  • Meaningful Rename: He was born Shaun Geddmore, but anglicized his last name when he first moved to Tal'Dorei and opened his store.
  • Mr. Exposition: Episode 38 has Gilmore give the story of Vecna, as he knows it. Along with Allura and Realmseer Eskel Ryndarian, he also offers insight into the mysterious black object beneath Whitestone in Episode 57.
  • Odd Friendship: He has a very odd but supportive friendship with Vax and is one of the few people Vax trusts enough to confide in, telling him everything about their adventures in the Underdark.
  • Purple Is Powerful: His robesuit is purple and he's a powerful mage and powerful businessman.
  • Second Love: We learn in Exandria Unlimited that he eventually gets over Vax and is now Happily Married to a man named Darius. The Reborn book shows a picture of them together.
  • Silver Fox: Appears to have become one as of Exandria Unlimited, being in his 60s but still handsome enough that Opal develops a crush on him on sight.
  • Try Not to Die: He outright demands that Vax not die while he's fighting the Chroma Conclave and refused to let Vax leave his home until he promised not to die. Instead of saying goodbye, he insists Vax says "Until next time".
  • We Buy Anything: Gilmore obviously accepts coin for his goods, and he'll also accept trades in kind for various odds and ends that can be used in magic crafting. Vox Machina pays for one of their shopping trips in part by giving him a bunch of fangs and scales from a blue dragon they previously killed. However, he draws the line at cursed items.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He gets no mention in the epilogue.
    • Corrected in The Search For Grog, which takes place a few days after the battle with Vecna. Gilmore is found performing magic tricks for children in the aftermath of the battle. He takes the news that Vax is gone as well as one could expect, but maintains most of his composure, saying that there will be time to grieve after the Vasselheim has recovered. He's last seen going back to entertaining the children.
    • In Exandria Unlimited, we learn that Gilmore has reopened his store and continued to be a prosperous and successful businessman well into his sixties.

    Sherri

Sherri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sherri.jpg
Race: Half-Elf

An employee of Gilmore's Glorious Goods, who frequently deals with Vox Machina whenever Gilmore isn't around to haggle.

  • Action Survivor: Proves to be quite the capable survivor during the Fall of Emon, where despite being injured and burned in the dragon's assault Sherri keeps a cool head and defends herself well against looters seeking to appease Thordak.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Being Gilmore's second-in-command can be a taxing and very frustrating position.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has a sarcastic barb ready for any encounter with Vox Machina, especially Vex.
  • Magic Wand: Carries a wand that shoots lightning and uses it to defend herself during the fall of Emon.
  • Not So Above It All: The majority of Sherri's interactions with Vox Machina show her to be completely unflappable, however, she gets very flustered and blushes when Scanlan flirts with her and writes her a song. Even decades later in Exandria Unlimited, being reminded of this incident causes her composure to crack a bit in embarrassment.
  • The Stoic: Outside of snarking, she is usually very calm and composed when she deals with Vox Machina.
  • Undying Loyalty: To her boss, Gilmore. During the Chroma Conclave's assault on Emon, she protected him (along with Uriel's family) while he was unconscious from his injuries.

    Tristan

Father Tristan

Race: Human
Class: Cleric

A cleric of Sarenrae / The Everlight who serves in her temple within Emon. He is, in fact, the one who revived Pike pre-stream.

  • Economy Cast: Whenever Vox Machina comes calling, he's the one they talk with. They ask for him because of their history together.
  • Good Shepherd: He is compassionate, benevolent, and always willing to help others like Vox Machina. He prays for Vax's redemption after giving him a holy symbol of Sarenrae.
  • White Magic: The power of The Everlight runs strong in him. He even brought Pike back from the dead.

    Kynan Leore

Kynan Leore

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kynan.jpg
"I just wanted to be a hero..."
Race: Human
Class: Rogue

An aspiring young fan of Vox Machina, first encountered in episode 23.

  • Abusive Parents: Vax sneaks off to visit him in episode 24. He doesn't find him, but instead meets his father, who is shown to be extremely unsupportive and even contemptuous of his son.
  • Apologetic Attacker: After stabbing Keyleth multiple times he drops his weapon and begins to apologize repeatedly.
  • Ascended Fanboy: His goal in-universe: he wants to join Vox Machina.
  • The Atoner: He aims to make amends for what happened on the Isle of Glintshore where Percy had died by Dr. Ripley's hand and he had stabbed Keyleth several times. After the Time Skip, Percy makes him Captain of the Whitestone Riflemen and says he's more than earned his second chance. By 843 PD, when the Hells come to visit Whitestone, Kynan's still the Captain, and is on friendly terms with both Percy and Keyleth.
  • Audience Surrogate: In a lot of ways, Kynan represents the Critter fanbase. Whether this was intentional or not is not currently known.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Maybe. Many Critters have speculated that while Kynan served as Cassandra's bodyguard, they began a romantic relationship. While Matthew Mercer hasn't confirmed it yet, he gave a Shrug of God stating that their shared history with Anna Ripley, their shared connection of being manipulated and abused by powerful people in their lives, and their equally stressful positions of power "certainly sounds like a set up for a meaningful romance".
  • The Bus Came Back: In episode 67 as one of Ripley's accomplices, and then in episode 96 as captain of the Whitestone riflemen.
    • In Campaign 3, when Bell's Hells come to Whitestone, he's still Captain of the Whitestone Rifle Corps.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He shows up at the beginning of a new arc, and while Vax immediately sends him packing, he also gives an open invitation for the kid to return. And he does.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: How Vax deals with his dreams of greatness - Vox Machina runs into a lot of trouble, and he doesn't think the kid is ready.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Claims to be the son of Harold the Butcher... who is actually just a butcher. Of meat.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Starts out as a Wide-Eyed Idealist who wants to join Vox Machina. After his rejection by Vax he runs off to gain experience. Reappears in episode 67 working for Ripley but Vax eventually manages to persuade him to turn against Ripley, and Kynan proves it by throwing his dagger at Orthax.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: Right before he leaves, he quietly says with tears in his eyes "I just wanted to be a hero..."
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: Non-fatal variant. Vax knocks him out while he's still talking to Vex. Matt roleplays it as him going on about how he's trained and ready when he abruptly collapses, unconscious.
  • One-Hit KO: Vax knocks him out in one swing. It's non-lethal, of course, but because he's a level 11 rogue it's a lot of damage:
Laura/Vex: If he's level one, you killed him.
Sam/Scanlan: (looking at the damage dice) It's like a million.
Taliesin/Percy: You've cleaved his head off with the blunt end of your blade.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Courtesy of Matt Mercer, after Vax crushes his dreams. It looks like he's about to cry.
  • Rank Up: Post-time skip, he's become captain of the Whitestone riflemen.
  • Took a Level in Badass: According to Word of God, Kynan is about level 2-3 when he visits Vox Machina in Episode 23. His time with Ripley gives him plenty of combat experience and is level 9 during the fight in Episode 68. While not a tremendous threat to Vox Machina, Kynan is a much more competent fighter, and he deals out some decent damage whilst being armed with a Vestige.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: The one thing we know about him at first is that he really wants to be a hero.

    Xanthas

Gatekeeper Xanthas

Race: Elf

A mage who serves Evening Keeper of the Traverse Junction at the Alabaster Lyceum. He is not a fan of Vox Machina.

  • Charm Person: Uses Dominate Person on Vex during the Battle of Fort Daxio.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Joins Thordak's army after Emon is conquered by the Chroma Conclave.
  • Les Collaborateurs: One of several high-placed members of Emon society who chose to work with the Thordak and the Chroma Conclave after they conquered the city. He uses his position to infiltrate Fort Daxio, incapacitate Allura, and soften the fort up for an assault by Thordak's forces.
  • Fireballs: One of several spells he uses in combat is the classic big ball of fire.
  • Jerkass: Although Vox Machina were kinda assholes to him, Xanthas is unpleasant himself and later proves to have no issue siding with Thordak and attacking his former allies.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: As Vex shoots arrows at him, Xanthas tries to surrender or cut a deal before an arrow lands in his face.
  • Shock and Awe: Is capable of using Chain Lightning.

    Spireling Shenn

Spireling Shenn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spireling_shenn.jpg
Race: Human
Class: Wizard (Illusionist)

The Spireling of Secrets for the Clasp, his headquarters lies within the sewers of Emon.

  • All There in the Manual: His class and status as Spireling of Secrets are established in the campaign guide.
  • Enemy Mine: During the reign of the Chroma Conclave he aids the resistance against Thordak because having dragons ruling the world is bad for business.
  • High-Class Glass: Wears a red monocle, whilst he isn't high-class he is a high-ranking member of the Clasp.

Fort Daxio

A massive fortress in the Othendin Pass and headquarters of the army of Tal'Dorei. Four regiments are stationed here: the Dusk Regiment, the Gale Regiment, the Aegis Regiment, and the Tide Regiment. Each is commanded by a general who reports to the current Warmaster.

    Mikael Daxio

Warmaster Mikael Daxio

Race: Elf

The commander of Emon's army at Fort Daxio and adopted father of Lord Riskel.

  • Bus Crash: Possibly. One of the adventure hooks in the Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting book has him murdered by a vampire, though it's up to DMs running Tal'Dorei campaigns to decided whether to use this or not.
  • Minor Major Character: He is only seen very briefly during the first campaign, despite being one of the most important individuals in the war against the Chroma Conclave.
  • White Sheep: Unlike his adopted son, he's a Reasonable Authority Figure.

    Ellie Gorgofon

General Ellie Gorgofon

Race: Human

The interim commander of Fort Daxio after the rise of the Chroma Conclave. She commands the Aegis Regiment.

  • Four-Star Badass: When Fort Daxio comes under attack Gorgofon helps to repel the assault.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Carries a massive tower shield that has a golden inlay in the center that looks like a polished mirror.
  • Number Two: To Warmaster Mikael Daxio, who left her in charge of the fort when he took most of his army to aid Syngorn.

Westruun

The second largest city in the Republic of Tal'Dorei. Westruun is ruled by a Margrave, an appointed military leader selected for life by the Tal'Dorei Council. It is also home to the Cobalt Reserve, the largest library in Tal'Dorei, as well as the Westhall Academy.

  • City Guards: Protected by the Shields of the Plain, who are more commonly known as simply the Shields.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Westruun is actually more on the eastern side of Tal'Dorei, and is in fact named after its founder Palest Westruun.

Government

    Atrix

Margrave Atrix

Race: Human

The appointed ruler of Westruun, Atrix was acquainted with Vox Machina during their time in the city.

  • Decapitation Presentation: The Herd of Storms stuck his head on a pike alongside many other citizens of Westruun as a warning and sign of their new rule over the city.
  • Posthumous Character: The audience never meets him while he is alive, as he is killed by the Herd of Storms when they sack the city following Umbrasyl's initial attack.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Atrix held power for more than ten years in Westruun and was highly regarded and well-liked by its citizens.

Civilians

    Wilhand Trickfoot

Wilhand Trickfoot

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wilhand_trickfoot.png
Race: Gnome
Voiced by: Henry Winkler

Before Wilhand Trickfoot, the Trickfoot family were destined to be nothing more than footpads, vagabonds, and thieves. But Sarenrae had other plans. Through her divine guidance, Wilhand started the path of kindness, serenity, and righteousness that would soon become a mainstay trait for the Trickfoot family. It would seem like fate had a hand in twisting the path of both the Strongjaw family and the Trickfoot family, when the Horde of the Storms came upon this elderly gnome in the woods. When Kevdak ordered Grog and the herd to kill Wilhand, Grog refused, and for his insubordination, Grog was beaten and left for dead. Wilhand asked Pike to heal him, and from then on Grog and Pike were the best of friends.

  • Big Good: He is a narrow example for the Trickfoot clan for steering them onto the path of healing and redemption through Sarenrae's benevolence.
  • Dirty Coward: He considers himself a coward for hiding from the Herd of Storms instead of fighting them, and he tried to scamper back into his panic room when told about Umbrasyl.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: After reuniting with the party and while in Scanlan's mansion, he's ashamed for not helping the people of Westruun. The party finds him passed out holding a bottle of wine in the kitchen later that day.
  • Inseries Nickname: Pike calls him "Pop-pop".
  • The Patriarch: Were it not for Wilhand changing his ways and instilling his morals and values in the rest of his family, Pike as we know her may never have existed.
  • Parental Substitute: After the incident with Kevdak, he basically becomes Grog's great-great-grandpa in addition to Pike's.
  • Properly Paranoid: Evidently, he thought the Herd of Storms would seek revenge for him healing and then basically adopting Grog, so he built several hiding places under his home where he could survive for "quite a while" if they came looking for him. The herd had no idea he was even in the city because of this.
  • Real Men Love Jesus: When told to evacuate by Vox Machina, the first thing he grabs is a small statue of Sarenrae.
  • Retired Badass: It's hinted that in his youth, Wilhand was an adventuring cleric of Sarenrae, much like Pike is now.
  • Shipper on Deck: He encourages Scanlan's courtship of Pike, especially once he found out Scanlan has a mansion.

    Eskil Ryndarien

Realmseer Eskil Ryndarien

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eskil_ryndarien_cr.PNG

Race: Human
Class: Wizard

A elderly human and one of the most powerful magic users in Tal'Dorei. A former member of the Arcana Pansophical, Eskil resides at Greystone Tower in Westruun. Vox Machina became acquainted with him after being hired to rob his tower before changing their minds and working with him.

  • Canon Immigrant: According to this tweet from Matt, Eskil originated as one of Matt's characters in EverQuest.
  • Fountain of Youth: The Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn reveals that sometime after Campaign 1, Eskil somehow rejuvinated his body to a younger age.
  • Locked Out of the Loop:
    • Since he was introduced pre-stream, before the team re-named themselves Vox Machina, he refers to them by their original name "The SHITs" in his first on-stream appearance.
    • A funny and somewhat morbid take on the trope. Poor Eskil has no idea why Vex needs him to teleport them to Kymal, with no one bothering to explain to him that Scanlan is dead and they need his daughter's help in the resurrection ritual. He spends the entire trip confused and ends up thinking Vex is trying to flirt with him.
  • Older Than They Look: Per Tal'Dorei Reborn, Eskil goes on to discover a means of magical rejuvenation and is regarded by the people of Westruun as "a handsome and aloof man about town".
  • Teleportation: Has the ability to teleport, which Vex uses in Episode 83 to get to Kymal and find Kaylie so she can help resurrect Scanlan.

    Zanror

Zanror

Race: Goliath
Class: Barbarian
Voiced by: Abubakar Salim

"I'm not like my father. This I've learned in recent months."

A member of the Herd of Storms, a roving herd built up of primarily of Goliath's. Son of Kevdak and cousin of Grog.

  • The Atoner: Joins what remains of his people to the Rivermaw Tribe as protectors as a way to make up for the Herd of Storms conquering them under Kevdak's rule.
  • Badass Family: Although fully capable of pulling his own weight, he is outshone by his cousin Grog and father Kevdak.
  • Badass in Distress: Was planning to usurp his father, but was revealed and imprisoned.
  • Battle Couple: Fights alongside Worra when the Herd and Vox Machina fight Umbrasyl.
  • Blood Knight: If he was to die, he'd be happy if it were at the claws of a dragons.
  • Due to the Dead: Pays his respects to the fallen members of his herd in Episode 56, having built funeral pyres for them.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Sincerely loves his wife Worra and unborn child.
  • Genius Bruiser: Unlike most of his kind, he is more than willing to spend his time planning an attack and listening to the wisdom of others.
  • Gentle Giant: Despite the fact that he is eager to battle, he is very protective and caring of his pregnant mate.
  • Heel–Face Turn: His father turned too brutal for even Zanror to stomach, and after taking leadership of the Herd he disbands it and leads most of its remaining members into the Rivermaw Tribe to lead a more peaceful life in the Torian Forest.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Admits to Grog that he had realized some months back, even before Westruun, that he was not brutal like his father.
  • Karma Houdini: Although he helped sack Westruun and personally murdered Reginald, Vox Machina allow him and the other surviving members of the Herd to leave without punishment.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As the new Thunderlord, he tries to bring back a spiritual side to the Herd of Storms that had been lost in generations past to mindless raiding.
  • Red Baron: The "Thunderlord".

    Worra

Worra

Race: Goliath

Zanror's mate.

  • Battle Couple: Fights alongside Zanror against Umbrasyl.
  • Blood Knight: Refuses to stay out of the fight against Umbrasyl despite her pregnancy as she does not wish to be denied any glory.
  • Pregnant Badass: Zanror initially tries to convince her not to fight, but she will not hear of it. Worra survives the battle unharmed while many of her fellow Goliaths perish.

    Orn

Orn "Blackfoot"

Race: Human

A petty thief who Grog frees from prison after liberating the city.

  • Asshole Victim: While most people imprisoned by Kavdak didn't deserve it, this guy certainly did. Also, it's hard to feel bad for him after his death.
  • Dirty Coward: Is clearly only out for his own gain. He ditches Grog at the first chance he gets, despite promising to help.
  • Karmic Death: Tries to pilfer the treasure used as bait for Umbrasyl, and triggers the magical explosive trap Pike placed on it.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: "Blackfoot" wasn't originally part of his name, just part of what Grog ended up calling him due to his appearance.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Appeared briefly in one episode and was promptly forgotten. The next we hear of him he's been blown up by Pike's trapped treasure off-screen, while the party was fighting Umbrasyl.
