https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shiemi_grandmother.png

Shiemi's grandmother who died shortly before Rin came to the True Cross Academy. She was the Shemihaza representative of the Grigori before the Blue Night.

  • Caring Gardener: Shiemi learned about gardening from her. She loved gardens and always dreamed about going to the garden of Amahara, although she never would leave her own garden behind to find it.
  • Cool Old Lady: She was extremely loving towards her granddaughter and it's clear Shiemi misses her greatly.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: She managed to take out Lucifer during a rampage with a little help from Mephisto.
  • Life Drain: She did this to Lucifer to stop his post Blue Night rampage, literally aging his body to the point of becoming dust.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: Flashbacks show that she was only slightly taller than a child Shiemi.
  • My Greatest Failure: She felt she failed her position as one of the Grigori by not preventing the Blue Night from happening. She retired soon afterwards and left the job to her daughter.
  • Necessarily Evil: During the Blue Night, Satan caused countless casualties in his relentless search for a body he could possess so he could claim Yuri as his possession. Afterwards, Shemihaza declared Yuri was to be captured and turned into a scapegoat, and demanded Yuri to give away her sons to have them exorcised. Shiro saw Shemihaza's actions as evil, but she deemed the death of Yuri and her sons as necessary for the public to have someone to blame for Satan's atrocities. However, she didn't really resist when Shiro still rebelled and ran away with Yuri.
  • Never Mess with Granny: She was already an old woman when the Blue Night happened, and still capable of teaming up with Mephisto to stop Lucifer from continuing where Satan left off.
  • Posthumous Character: Shortly before the start of the series, she died in an accident while attempting to cover the grapes in the garden.
  • Retired Badass: She was powerful enough to stop Lucifer's rampage, but resigned her position as Shemihaza due to considering the Blue Night a failure in her duty. For the rest of her days, she lived as a gardener at the Exorcist shop Futsumaya.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looked exactly like her daughter and granddaughter, Shiemi, when she was briefly de-aged by draining Lucifer's life force.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: In her day, she was the only Grigori descendant to still have any of the original's powers.
  • Unnamed Parent: She's only known as "Shiemi's Grandmother". Later on, it's revealed her name was Shemihaza until she renounced the name along her position in the Grigori.
  • Walking Spoiler: Knowing the fact that she was the previous Shemihaza gives away the secret of Shiemi's family legacy.

The owner and shopkeeper at the Exorcist Shop, Futsumaya.

  • Adaptational Dye-Job: Brunette in Season 1 and Blonde in Season 3 onwards.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: At this point, the Shemihaza blood has become so thin she is essentially human, with no demon powers of her own. She's still one of the top powers of a world spanning exorcist organization.
  • Secret Identity: The public knows her as the shopkeeper at the Exorcist Shop, but she's secretly one of the three members of the Grigori, the supreme advisors of the True Cross Order. Not even Shiemi knew about her secret identity until her mother had to tell her the destiny of their legacy is becoming members of the Grigori.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looked exactly like her daughter Shiemi when she was younger.
  • Unnamed Parent: She's mainly known as "Shiemi's Mother".

Click here to see her after Illuminati's experiments

The previous chief priestess of the Inari Shrine and Izumo's mother.

  • Abusive Mom: Originally, she was a loving, if unreliable, mother to her daughters, but it all changed after her boyfriend said he didn't want to date her anymore because he thought children were a pain. After that, she started neglecting her daughters and verbally abused Izumo, blaming her for everything wrong in her life. Finally, the Nine-Tailed Fox's possession drove her to attempt killing her daughters for being the reason her boyfriend grew tired of her.
  • Barrier Maiden: As the priestess of the Inari Shrine, Tamamo had the duty of keeping the Nine-Tailed Fox sealed inside the Killing Stone by routinely performing a Divine Summoning and appeasing the spirit with her mystic dance. Unfortunately, one day, her boyfriend's callous words made her emotionally unstable when she performed the ritual, resulting in the Nine-Tailed Fox possessing her.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: The sclerae of her eyes turned black when the Nine-Tailed Fox fully possessed her body.
  • Body Horror: She was possessed by the spirit of the Nine-Tailed Fox and subjected to years of experimentation that has left her an emaciated and bandaged mess.
  • Demonic Possession: The weakness in her heart caused her to be possessed by the Nine-Tailed Fox she was supposed to be keeping sealed.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: She dies as a crying Izumo clings to her body.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: She gives up her last bit of lifeforce to channel the Nine-Tailed Fox that had possessed Izumo. As she lays dying, she calls Izumo her treasure one last time.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: In the anime, Tamamo's voice turned much deeper after the Nine-Tailed Fox fully corrupted her.
  • Extreme Doormat: Because of her immaturity, Tamamo was a very unassertive woman and did nothing but cry when people from the Inami family mistreated her. This is also why she was still a single mother since even after having two daughters with her, Soji had no interest in bearing responsibility for them and made Tamamo raise them alone. When Izumo complained about her father being a deadbeat, Tamamo claimed he was just busy with work all while enduring Soji's neglectful behavior towards her and her daughters. Tamamo did try to ask Soji to at least meet their daughters, but he threatened to break up with her if she kept insisting he should act like a father and she couldn't say anything in protest.
  • Fate Worse than Death: She's been experimented on and reduced to a withered husk of a woman as a result of being possessed and captured by the Illuminati.
  • Forbidden Love: The Kamiki was a low branch family of the Inami family and Tamamo was the lover of its head priest. Their relationship was frowned upon by the main family, causing Tamamo and her daughters to be treated coldly.
  • Good Girl Gone Bad: Tamamo was a loving and bubbly, if childish and irresponsible, woman. That was until her boyfriend wanted to break up with her because he wanted nothing to do with their children. The Nine-Tailed Fox took advantage of her mental weakness and corrupted her, culminating in her massacring the Inami family and trying to kill her own daughters.
  • Go Out with a Smile: She spends her final moments smiling and comforting her daughter.
  • Hellish Pupils: While corrupted by the Nine-Tailed Fox, Tamamo gained slitted pupils.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She forcefully takes the Nine-Tailed Fox that's possessing Izumo so that when she dies it will go with her, saving Izumo and ruining the Illuminati's plans.
  • Hidden Depths: Turns out the reason Izumo can go to True Cross is because of money she left behind for her.
  • Hime Cut: Tamamo had blunt bangs, chin-length sidelocks, and long straight hair. This represented her position as a powerful Miko descended from a kitsune linage. Her personality, however, was far from dignified.
  • Hot for Preacher: She was the lover of the head priest of the Inari Shrine. She wanted to believe he would marry her after they had two daughters, but he still refused and everything went wrong from there.
  • In Love with Love: Soji was a cold and neglectful man who tried to spend time with her as little as possible, and he had no interest in helping her raise their two daughters. Despite this, Tamamo still was under the delusion that Soji loved her and she would eventually have a happy married life with him. Her fantasy shattered when Soji callously told her to her face that he didn't want to even see their daughters and he threatened to dump her for insisting he should at least meet them. It all went downhill from there.
  • Kidnapped for Experimentation: After she was fully possessed by the Nine-Tailed Fox, Tamamo was captured by the Illuminati and experimented upon by Gedouin for years. When Izumo sees her again, Tamamo is horribly disfigured and barely alive because of the terrible experiments she was put through.
  • Legacy Character: Every head priestess in the Kamiki family is named Tamamo.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gained fox ears and nine tails after being possessed by the Nine-Tailed Fox.
  • Locked into Strangeness: Her dark purple hair turned white after the Nine-Tailed Fox took full control over her.
  • Mama Bear: Once she's freed of the Nine Tails influence because it possessed her daughter, she stood up for what must have been the first time in years and proceeded to not only avoid its attacks but remove it.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name comes from Tamamo-no-Mae, the Nine-Tailed Fox of Japanese Mythology.
  • Miko: She was a very powerful shrine maiden. She was in possession by the Nine-Tailed Fox for five years and never gave in enough for it to overtake her whereas her daughter couldn't last more than a few minutes. On top of that she forcefully exorcised it out of Izumo and into her while it was trying to kill her without much effort and in a body that hadn't been mobile for ages.
  • Mundane Utility: She summoned her fox familiars to have them take care of all the housework and cook for her and her daughters.
  • Not Good with Rejection: She didn't have the maturity to handle being rejected by her lover. The Nine-Tailed Fox then took advange of her emotional instability and possessed her, driving her to murder her lover and attempt murdering her own daughters.
  • Offing the Offspring: She attempted to do murder her daughters after being possessed.
  • Parental Neglect: It started after her boyfriend threatened to break up with her if she expected him to act even a bit like a father for their daughters. Tamamo spent all day at the Inari Shrine with her boyfriend and stopped coming home to Izumo and Tsukumo altogether.
  • Parents as People: Tamamo did truly love her daughters, but she was also a whiny Womanchild incapable of taking care of herself and her children. She relied entirely on her fox familiars to handle the housework and often left her daughters alone while she worked at the shrine or went out on dates with her boyfriend. Then it took a turn for the worse when her boyfriend wanted to dump her because he hated children and didn't want to acknowledge Tamamo's daughters as his own. The emotional shock caused Tamamo to become possessed by the Nine-Tailed Fox, turning her into a murderous monster that tried to kill her own daughters. Tamamo's failures as a mother are the main cause of Izumo's belief that she shouldn't rely on anyone but herself, but at the end, Tamamo sacrifices herself to save Izumo's life, proving that her love for her daughter was genuine nonetheless.
  • The Power of Hate: The Nine-Tailed Fox that possessed her seems to run off of this, getting into her as she starts to get angry and resentful of others, starting to hate aspects of her life.
  • Prone to Tears: She would cry like a baby over every single thing, showing how immature and hypersensitive she was.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her eyes turned red when the Nine-Tailed Fox assimilated with her and turned her into a bloodthirsty beast.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Tamamo made the fatal mistake of performing a Divine Summoning when she was a fragile mental state because her boyfriend wanted to break up with her. As a result, the Nine-Tailed Fox possessed her and transformed her into a monster. She then killed everyone in the Inami family, including her boyfriend, and tried to kill her own daughters. This forced Izumo to ask the Illuminati to capture her mother, which resulted in Tamamo being horribly experimented on and Izumo becoming their prisoner. The experiments left Tamamo on the verge of death and Gedouin planned to turn Izumo into her replacement after forcing her to become the new host of the Nine Tails, which almost turns Izumo into a monster as well. To save Izumo, Tamamo uses Divine Summoning to force the Nine Tails to go back into her body, so that it will die with her.
  • Skilled, but Naive: She had far greater spiritual power than any Miko of the Kamiki family before her. However, she lacked the emotional maturity and mental fortitude necessary to resist the influence of darkness in a Moment of Weakness. She ended up possessed by the Nine-Tailed Fox she was supposed to keep sealed because she performed the ritual while she was still upset about her boyfriend threatening to leave her because she had children (who were also his).
  • Spoiled Sweet: Tamamo was a loving and affectionate woman, but being spoiled rotten by her fox familiars made her extremely naive, flaky and careless even as an adult.
  • Third-Person Person: She used "Tama-chan" in place of a first-person pronoun despite being a grown woman, showing how much of a Womanchild she was.
  • Unusual Eyebrows: Her daughters got their thick, dot-shaped eyebrows from her.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: She was childish and silly in sharp contrast to her daughter Izumo's no-nonsense attitude. Their interactions in flashbacks show Izumo was already very serious and responsible at elementary school age while Tamamo was immature and flaky, asking her young daughter to comfort her when she whines like a kid. It gets Played for Drama since Tamamo's immaturity made her push all her responsibilities on Izumo, who grew to resent her in return.
  • Walking Spoiler: Most information about her is a spoiler, considering her big impact and role in regards to Izumo's past and the Illuminati.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: The possession of the Nine-Tailed Fox turned her into an evil monster, and it also made her hair turn white.
  • Willing Channeler: To save Izumo from being possessed, Tamamo channels the Nine-Tailed Fox to force it to return to her body. Then she dies from years of human experimentation, taking the Nine-Tailed Fox down with her.
  • Womanchild: She had the emotional maturity of a little kid despite being a fully-grown woman and a mother. Even her first daughter Izumo at elementary school age acted more responsibly than her. Her immature nature not only hints at how much power the Inami family had over her, but led to her getting possessed as she didn't have the mental fortitude to handle her lover's rejection.
  • Woman Scorned: When Tamamo asked Soji to meet their daughters, he coldly told her he would dump her if she ever asked that again. As a result, Tamamo to become possessed by the Nine-Tailed Fox and she murdered Soji after she was fully corrupted.
  • Yandere: Due to the Nine-Tailed Fox corrupting her, Tamamo became obsessed with her lover Soji, leading her to be neglectful towards her daughters as she tried to spend all her time with Soji. This culminated in Tamamo killing Soji because he said he didn't want a woman with children, and then she tried to kill her own daughters, blaming them as the reason why Soji grew tired of her. At the end, it's subverted when having the Nine-Tailed Fox extracted from her body makes her recover her sanity and her last act is saving Izumo's life by taking the Fox into herself again so it dies with her.

    Tsukumo Kamiki / Tsukiko Takara

Voiced by: Rina Endo (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsukumo_kamiki_anime.png

Izumo's younger sister who was separated from her at three years old.

  • Adoptive Name Change: Her birth name is Tsukumo Kamiki. After she was adopted by the Takara family, her name changed to Tsukiko Takara.
  • Cheerful Child: She's almost never not seeing smiling.
  • Clingy Child: When she was a toddler, Tsukumo would cling to her older sister Izumo when the people of the Inari Shrine treated her coldly.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in low pigtails similar to her sister's.
  • Happily Adopted: She was adopted by Nemu's uncle and now lives happily with her adoptive parents.
  • Ignorance Is Bliss: Tsukumo doesn't remember her biological family anymore, nor does she know her mother and older sister were kept captive by Illuminati while she was adopted by a good family with connections to the True Cross Order. After finally finding Tsukumo, Izumo realizes that Tsukumo has forgotten about her and is perfectly happy with her new family, so she decides to not tell her about their true relationship since Tsukumo is better off not knowing the hardships her biological family lived through.
  • Innocently Insensitive: When Izumo meets her again for the first time in years, Tsukumo doesn't recognize her because she was a toddler when they were separated. Izumo then decides to return Tsukumo's fox doll before parting ways with her for good, and Tsukumo thanks her while calling her "onee-chan" despite not being aware they're actually sisters. Afterwards, Izumo is so heartbroken that she breaks down crying in front of Shiemi.
  • It Was a Gift: Izumo gave her a fox doll as a good luck charm. Although she can't remember Izumo gave it to her anymore, she still treasures the doll.
  • Long-Lost Relative: When Tsukumo was about three years old, Maria Yoshida put her up for adoption to protect her from Illuminati, but her older sister Izumo stayed as Illuminati's prisoner for years and obeyed their orders because they threatened to track down Tsukumo. It's later revealed Tsukumo was under the protection of the True Cross Order all along. Izumo is relieved to know Tsukumo is safe, but at the same time, she's very sad and frustrated because Tsukumo doesn't even remember her anymore and she has a new happy family without her in it.
  • Protectorate: Izumo is desperate to protect Tsukumo. This is exploited as it makes it easy for the Illuminati to manipulate Izumo.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With Izumo. Tsukumo is sweet, cheerful and innocent, as opposed to her cynical and no-nonsense Tsundere older sister.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looks identical to her mother and older sister.
  • Unusual Eyebrows: She has dot-shaped eyebrows, just like her mother and sister.

    Soji Inami

Voiced by: Takaya Kuroda (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soji_inami.png

The former head priest of the Inari Shrine. He was Tamamo's lover, and fathered Izumo and Tsukumo Kamiki with her, but he didn't want any involvement in their upbringing.

  • Child Hater: Why he didn't want anything to do with Izumo or Tsukumo.
  • Disappeared Dad: He never went to see his daughters even once because he didn't like children.
  • Hate Sink: Soji treated his lover like shit and refused to do anything with his daughters. His death leaves no one mourning.
  • Jerkass: He was a callous and uncaring man who never acknowledged his own children and treated Tamamo coldly.
  • Karmic Death: He callously threatened to dump Tamamo because he wanted nothing to do with their daughters. Because of his cruel words, Tamamo was emotionally unstable when she performed her routinary Divine Summoning and the Nine-Tailed Fox possessed her. Corrupted by her amplified dark emotions and desires, Tamamo murdered Soji.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Soji doesn't appear much, but it's thanks to him that Izumo is the person she is today. Had he agreed to raise his daughters, things might've turned different.
  • Threatening to Cut Ties: He threatened to break up with Tamamo if she kept mentioning their daughters in front of him, making clear that he had no intention of marrying her and being part of their daughters' lives.
  • Useless Bystander Parent: He fathered two daughters with Tamamo, but he still didn't want to marry her or acknowledge the children as his own. As a result, the people of the Inari Shrine treated Tamamo, Izumo and Tsukumo coldly, yet Soji never did anything about it. When Tamamo asked him to at least meet their daughters, he immediately wanted to break up with her.
