https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shiro_fujimoto.png

Adoptive father of Rin and Yukio, Badass Preacher, and a member of the True Cross Order. Rather eccentric. A loving father. Former Paladin. Now deceased.

  • The Ace: Even as a young man he was a superior exorcist who became branch manager not long after promotion from exwire. Mephisto even describes him as the Order’s most decorated exorcist.
  • Action Dad: Was an active exorcist until the day he died.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Due to his relative lack of characterization at the time the anime was made, Shiro is a much different person in the anime than in the manga.
  • All-Loving Hero: In the anime. Despite being a force to be reckoned with, he was more than willing to help anyone and anything that legitimately wanted to reform their ways, as exemplified by Kuro and Rin.
    • A flashback shows that he only developed this attitude because of Yuri, the twin's mother, dying for her belief that demons and humans could coexist, and was a full-blown Knight Templar prior to this.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: When Yuri was dying in his arms, Shiro desperately begged her to stay with him because he loved her from the day he first met her and wanted to raise her sons together with her.
  • Artificial Human: He was a clone of the Demon King Azazel originally created as part of Section 13's experiments to make new bodies for the Eight Demon Kings.
  • Badass Preacher: The head father of his church, and was a former Paladin.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Yuri was the first person who showed him human warmth and treated him like a normal kid like her instead of a lab rat. Because of her kindness, Shiro had feelings for Yuri since they first met, but never got around to telling her how he felt until she died.
  • Berserk Button: Being called weak in any sense was a BIG one when he was younger.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up just in time to rescue Rin from the first demon he's ever encountered.
  • Broken Tears: When Yuri died in his arms, he was so broken up by grief, regret, and guilt that he cried for the first time in his life.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: He was the Brooding Boy to Yuri's Gentle Girl. Despite him being a big jerk, Yuri could tell he only acted the way he did because he was seriously messed up inside and she wanted to reach out to him to see his softer side.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: He was too stubborn to admit he had feelings for Yuri, even though he loved her all along. Tragically, he only told Yuri he loved her as she was dying in his arms.
  • Children Raise You: Being a parent not only softened him considerably, it also led him to take up both cooking and teaching at the exorcist cram school so he could teach his sons the skills he thought they would need in life.
  • Child Soldier: The flashback arc reveals he was created as a clone of Azazel and though he wasn't a successful host, he was pretty much immediately trained as an exorcist.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: While they weren't exactly friends, he and Yuri met when they were children. She was friendly to him, but he was a Jerkass who didn't want to get along with anyone. As an adult, Shiro rejected a teen Yuri's Love Confession, but agreed to be friends with her. He only admitted he was in love with her when she was dying.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Loved big breasted women and was constantly picking up one night stands, but was also very honest and upfront about his intentions. He also refused to go after anyone younger than himself.
  • Clone Angst: He hated being a clone because he was raised as a lab rat and saw all his clone siblings die.
  • Commitment Issues: When he was younger, Shiro refused all relationships with women that went beyond a one night stand. This also applied to Yuri despite Shiro reciprocating her feelings. He did eventually ask Yuri to let him raise her sons with her... only for her to die immediately after.
  • Cool Old Guy: From what little we've seen of him he was definitely one of these. Rin even has him at the top of his "Cool Guys According To Me" list.
  • Dads Can't Cook: For most of his life Shiro did not cook, preferring convenience store food or mooching off Yuri and Rick. Ultimately averted when he actually became a dad and taught himself how to cook properly so he could teach the skill to Rin.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Shiro grew up in confinement, was drugged and cruelly experimented on every day. He saw as his fellow clones died and those who lived went crazy, which made him obsessed with being strong enough to survive.
  • Deal with the Devil: Made a deal with Mephisto to get out of Section 13; if Shiro ever yielded to a demon for any reason, he had to do one favor for Mephisto no matter what it was. This comes back to bite him hard and gets him made Paladin.
  • Death by Origin Story: In the first chapter/second episode, Satan uses Demonic Possession and takes over his body to tell Rin that he's the son of Satan. He fights him off but doesn't manage to live.
  • Death Seeker: He briefly loses the will to live after Yuri dies.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Of the sense that he was a great father to Rin and Yukio before he died. It gets Played With on Yukio's part because most of Yukio's Sanity Slippage comes from the lack of proper childhood socialization, internalized hatred of anything demonic, and overly harsh training from Shiro to become a the competent Child Soldier he is. Rin, who was raised normally, noticeably doesn't have any of Yukio's psychological problems. However, Yukio clearly still loves his father and remembers him fondly.
  • Determinator: He's single minded when it comes to his goals, be they survival, victory in battle, or rescuing Yuri. This is helped along by the enhanced healing left over from his time as a lab subject. This trait was critical to his survival early in life but was also his undoing.
  • Dirty Kid: Even back when he was a kid, he loved boobs and kept dirty magazines in his room. In fact, Yuri was able to bribe her way into staying in his hideout by promising to lead him to a Porn Stash hidden in her home junk yard.
  • Dirty Old Monk: He was very interested in the ladies despite priests needing to be chaste.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: He lets slip some of the horror of his childhood to Yuri in order to make a point and subsequently becomes very uncomfortable and defensive when she expresses sympathy.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: He dies fighting off the strongest demon of Gehenna.
  • Escaped from the Lab: He was one of the Azazel clones created in Section 13 as one of the potential vessels of the Demon Kings. In his childhood, he escaped from Section 13 and made a living on the streets. He was caught by the exorcists and taken back to the lab. Shiro then made a deal with Mephisto so he would be allowed to become an exorcist and obtain his freedom.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • His inability to open up. This was inherited by Yukio.
    • As a younger man his temper was his other flaw, but he managed to more or less outgrow it after befriending Yuri.
  • Former Teen Rebel: Turns out that similar to Rin, Shiro had a reputation as a problem child in his teenage years. He mellowed out as an adult after making some real friends, and even more later on as a result of adopting Rin and Yukio.
  • Give Him a Normal Life: Sealed away Rin's demonic powers and tried to hide his true nature to give him a normal life. Or so we're told.
    • Later played with. The end result was this trope, but the original reason for the sealing was to make Rin easier to kill.
  • Giver of Lame Names: Paladin and badass he was, he sucks at name giving. He gives a powerful black Cait Sith he gets as a familiar the name Kuro. He also gave Shura her name because she gave the impression of being an Ashura.
  • Good Shepherd: Aside from the exorcist thing, he does the "mundane" sort of preaching in a monastery. He's Rin's father in two senses of the word.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: In his teens and early 20s he was prone to losing it over even minor insults and accidental contact.
  • Handsome Lech: Really got around as soon as he became able to do so. Unlike many versions of this trope he was highly successful.
  • The Hedonist: As soon as he officially became an exorcist, and therefore independent, he began engaging in sex and alcohol, which Rin got a front row seat for to his displeasure.
  • Heel Realization: When Yuri died, he thought himself no better than Satan for letting her be reduced to that state.
  • Heroic BSoD: He goes into one when Yuri dies.
  • Heroic Suicide: He basically killed himself to stop Satan from kidnapping Rin.
    • He also tried this the first time he was possessed by Satan to stop him from reaching Yuri. He got better that time though.
  • Heroic Willpower: Satan has been trying to possess him for years pre-series. He always failed because Fujimtoto's will was too strong. Unfortunately, losing his temper with his adoptive son (enough to hit him) turned out to be enough of a My God, What Have I Done? moment to give an opening.
  • Hot-Blooded: He was a very hotheaded kid. Rin even points out how much child Shiro reminds him of himself.
  • Hyper-Awareness: Downplayed, but he immediately noticed that Rin saw the coal tar - revealing that his seal is definitely too weak to contain his demonic powers - which made him follow after him.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: He demanded Mephisto to make him into an Exwire so he wouldn't have to spend his entire life locked up in Section 13 to be used as a lab rat.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: He blamed himself for Yuri's death because he thought it wouldn't have happened if he had admitted his feelings for her sooner and given her a reason to stay away from Satan and all the problems that came of that decision.
  • Indy Ploy: Ran on these his entire career as it turns out.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Turns out Satan possessed his body once before, right after the birth of Rin and Yukio. Shiro broke free of the possession and stabbed his own neck, but he survived that time thanks to Shemihaza healing his fatal wound.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Rough, crude, and a bit abrasive, especially in flashbacks before he adopted Rin and Yukio. At the same time, he helped the Myoo Dharani survive the demonic plague inflicting them (only demands payment afterwards and not before he starts caring for everyone) and he was injured at the time. He also lied on his mission report about where Shura came from.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • When he attacked Rick in Mexico. We'd already seen Shiro be rude and even violent to people, but Rick was only trying to hand him some water and Shiro's punch and comments about being a low ranked loser were completely out of line.
    • Shooting the greenmen just for being demons despite them being harmless counts too.
    • His determination to kill the twins despite Yuri's begging for mercy.
  • Ladykiller in Love: He was quite the womanizer in his youth and never looked for a meaningful relationship with any of the women he slept with. Yuri Egin was the only woman he ever had serious feelings for, even though he never dared to confess those feelings until it was too late.
  • Leonine Contract: Had one of these with Mephisto. In return for letting him out of Section 13 to become an exorcist, if Shiro ever yielded to a demon for any reason, he had to do one favor for Mephisto no matter what it was. Shiro, being 11 and desperate, said yes without thinking about it. Decades later Shiro let Satan's sons live and Mephisto declared this counted as yielding to a demon, trapping Shiro into the position of Paladin where he would be forced to obey Mephisto's orders for the rest of his life.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: His character profile reveals one of his favourite pastimes was collecting porn magazines and his office had very prominent posters of busty women in it. No matter how much of a pervert was, Shiro was a very likable person and good father to his adopted sons.
  • Love Redeems: His friendship with Yuri made him a better person. Their friendship started with her having him apologize for being a jerk, and we see that she was a major part of his life for years afterwards.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: Lied to Yukio about his health and resistance to Satan in order to reassure him.
  • Made of Iron: He's very durable, able to run away with the Koma sword less than a day after being seriously injured and act normal when Rin broke his ribs.
  • Magically-Binding Contract: Had a morinas contract to prevent him from spilling Section 13's secrets.
  • Marshmallow Hell: He is on the receiving end of one during a flashback in chapter 78. Shura takes her top off and shoves her bare breasts in Shiro's face after he tells her to respect herself more and to stop throwing herself at men.
  • Meaningful Name: There are several layers of meaning to his name, many of them clues to his origins, profession, and ultimate fate.
    • First name, Shirou: meanings include White (his hair color), the number 4 (his clone number), and is spelled with the kanji for Lion (symbolism that ties in with Archangel Michael).
    • Last name, Fujimoto: root of it all (he was heavily involved in the events leading to the present), lives on in memory (he pops up a lot in flashbacks, especially for his sons), suicide mountain (he killed himself to prevent Satan from grabbing Rin).
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
  • Mystical White Hair: His hair has always been white, because he's a clone of Azazel, Demon King of Air.
  • Nephewism: He's the same kind of clone as the body taken by Satan, making him technically the uncle of Rin and Yukio by blood along with their adoptive father.
  • No Sympathy: During his first meeting with Yuri Egin in their childhood, she sneaked into Shiro's hideout and ate some of his food supplies because she lost her adoptive family in a fire and was left to fend for herself in the cold and snowy streets. When Shiro heard about this, he was willing to let Yuri freeze to death because he didn't want to share his space.
  • Nominal Hero: Fights on the side of humanity against demons mostly because it's the only path available to him in life. He hates demons far more than he cares about humans.
  • Numerical Theme Naming: He and all other Azazel clones are named for their numbers.
  • Old Master: Considering his age and the fact that he schools demons easily.
    • It's taken even further in the anime, where the demon possessing Reiji Shiratori was Astaroth, the Eighth Demon King. The current Paladin, Arthur, wouldn't dare take on Amaimon, the Seventh Demon King, at full power. Shiro exorcises Astaroth with a single aria. When Astaroth repossesses Reiji and takes on his Major form, he only needs a little more help to exorcise him again.
  • Opposites Attract: When he was younger, Shiro was rude, short-tempered and aggressive man who would attack even harmless demons. Despite their clashing ideologies, the sweet-natured and friendly Actual Pacifist Yuri fell in love with him. While he rejected her advances, Shiro did like her back.
  • The Paladin: Until his death, he was the highest ranking exorcist of the world. Though this turns out to not be the honor it was previously thought to be.
  • Papa Wolf: For his adoptive children he would fend off SATAN himself.
    • This turns out to have been his downfall, as his panic upon finding out Satan is after Rin's body is revealed to have been the opening Satan had been waiting for.
  • Parental Favoritism: Yukio sure believes this is the case. Shiro chose to expose Yukio to the dangers of the world of exorcists and put him through harsh training since childhood while he left Rin out of everything, wanting Rin to live a normal and peaceful life. A part of Yukio resents this deep down.
  • Parental Substitute: He was a father figure and legal guardian to Rin and Yukio before dying. He also looked after a little Shura for a short time before he left her in an orphanage.
  • Parents as People: It's clear that he cared deeply for his sons, but like many parents, he had his struggles. His upbringing may have made it difficult for him to navigate fatherhood, and unfortunately it led to some problems, including his untimely passing. Despite these challenges, he did everything he could to be a loving and supportive dad.
    • While his parenting did make Rin into a good-hearted and heroic guy, Yukio is extremely troubled because he thinks Shiro only loved Rin and raised Yukio to be a Child Soldier so he could protect Rin because Shiro treated the two so differently.
    • Rin faces several obstacles as an exorcist in training due to how Shiro brought him up. After Shiro's death, Rin struggles to control his demon powers as a son of Satan. This makes it difficult for him to establish himself as a force for good in order to gain trust and recognition from others, particularly from the order that allows him to live.
  • Pining After Protagonist's Parent: It's eventually revealed that Shiro was in love with Yuri Egin, the mother of Rin and Yukio. She reciprocated his feelings, but Shiro refused to admit he loved her until it was too late and she was dying in his arms.
  • Posthumous Character: He dies very early in the series and a lot about him is only learned through flashbacks.
  • Raised in a Lab: He spent his early childhood as a guinea pig in Section 13's lab, where he and many other clones of the demon kings were created.
  • Real Men Hate Affection: As a younger man, he had a hard time displaying "soft" emotions, and was unable to acknowledge Yuri's feelings for him or admit he reciprocated even after more than a decade of friendship. As of the beginning of the series he'd gotten much better, to the point of being able to pass on valuable life lessons, but still prone to using more "tough guy" methods of socializing with his sons.
  • Really Gets Around: As soon as he was independent, he started picking up women for one night stands, much to Mephisto's delight and Rin's embarrassment.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Had one in Tatsuma's flashback and presumably for other winter missions.
  • Shared Family Quirks: In a flashback in the manga his personality is almost exactly like Rin's, just rougher. He also shows the same kind of Doctor skill Yukio has in the present.
  • Silver Fox: He's always been considered one of the handsomest characters in the series even before the flashback arc that covered his youth.
  • Smoking Is Cool: He was often seen smoking and was a pretty cool guy.
  • The Social Darwinist: He was the only clone that survived the cruel experiments meant to create suitable bodies for the Demon Kings. He grew up with the mentality that only the strong survive and the weak only exist to be used and killed.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: He grew out of it, but in his teens and early 20s, Shiro was a raging asshole in addition to being one of the most tragic figures in the series.
  • Tomato Surprise: It has been revealed that Fujimoto was a clone of the demon Azazel.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He was a massive jackass in his youth because of his upbringing as a test subject. He turned into the friendly and kindhearted man we're familiar with thanks to his interactions with Yuri Egin and even more after he began raising her twin sons.
  • Tragic Hero: His temper is what got him possessed by Satan, leading to his death.
  • Tragic Keepsake: He took his glasses from his guardian when the latter was dying.
  • Troubled, but Cute: In his teenage years, he was violent and abrasive but also handsome and very popular with women.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Our brief introduction to 11-year-old Shiro in the time travel arc revealed him to be violent, foul-mouthed, ridiculously independent, and already obsessed with porn and big boobed women.
  • Tsundere: Harsh type in his younger days. Because of his anger issues and stubbornness, Shiro couldn't admit he liked Yuri back, but it wasn't hard to tell how he really felt about her. It's also Played for Drama; Shiro ended up deeply regretting not opening up to Yuri until she was dying and wondered why he couldn't be nicer to her.
  • Would Hit a Girl:
    • He tried to attack Yuri in anger during an argument.
    • He would also reject kid Shura's advances rather violently.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In the manga he fully intended to kill Rin and Yukio. He decided to let them be after seeing their will to live and deciding to respect that.
  • You Are Number 6: Experimental Subject Number AO-004.

    Arthur Auguste Angel

Voiced by: Daisuke Ono (Japanese), David Vincent (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arthur_auguste_angel.png

The current Paladin. Angel leads the Angelic Legion, and follows the orders of the Vatican to a T.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: The anime exaggerates his more negative qualities. It doesn't help that most of his more sympathetic moments happen later and so never made it into the anime.
  • Alliterative Name: Arthur. Auguste. Angel.
  • Artificial Human: He's one of the many clones of Lucifer created at Section 13.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In episode 25 to save the main heroes. Anime only.
  • BFS: Caliburn is a big blade.
  • Calling Your Attacks: ANGEL SLASH!
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: In the anime, he's both on the delivering and receiving ends. He easily manages to subdue both Rin and Shura, but when Amaimon went into an Unstoppable Rage (Anime Only), he was almost immediately knocked out.
  • Dramatic Irony: Does not know he was cloned from a demon.
  • Dumb Blond: Blond and an idiot.
  • Escaped from the Lab: According to Mephisto, Arthur originally comes from the Asylum laboratory where clones were being made of demon kings for them to have bodies in Assiah. Arthur is confirmed to be a Lucifer clone. Arthur himself has no memory of this. See Trauma-Induced Amnesia below.
  • Fantastic Racism: In the anime, "for the kin of Satan, just being alive is a sin!" In the manga, referring to Mephisto, "his kind specializes in deceit!"
  • Green-Eyed Monster: In chapter 38 of the manga, we see just how upset he was that he didn't get the chance to fight the Impure King, and sees how Rin was the one to defeat it as adding insult to injury.
  • Honor Before Reason: Anime only. As of episode 24, he's admitted to realizing that the Vatican is going in the wrong direction, but he refuses to betray them and will still follow his orders.
  • Idiot Hero: Whether or not he truly counts as a "Hero" may vary, but he is the Paladin...and even admits to being dimwitted.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Arrogant, takes great pleasure in antagonizing the other characters (Rin in particular), has plenty of Kick the Dog moments, and frequently refers to the memory of his predecessor (who was both a better paladin and overall person) with open contempt. Further appearances slowly show him as a very flawed but still somewhat good person. Fantastic Racism and his stubborn idiocy gets in the way a lot, but he cares for his subordinates and is very upset that one of his "Angelic Squad" members is part of the Illuminati.
  • Kick the Dog: Varies in intensity.
    • In the anime, he takes exceptional pleasure in trying to kill Neuhause's wife despite Shiemi begging him to show her mercy.
    • In the manga, he shows no hesitation or remorse at stabbing Rin's leg to "contain" him during the trial.
  • Large Ham: He's dramatic and over-the-top.
  • Lawful Stupid:
    • Mainly in the anime. Arthur will follow the orders of his superiors, without question, even knowing that they may obstruct some people's good intentions. He does get a bit better in the anime where he saves Shura and Shiemi in episode 25. He also leaves without incident after the final battle.
    • In the manga, his open contempt for Mephisto leads to many more arguments over whatever course of action he's recommended even if everyone else agrees. It's also later revealed that the Uzai family encourage this trope in him.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's a handsome man with long blond hair.
  • Mythical Motifs: His name and his sword are obviously taken from the Arthurian Legend.
  • The Paladin: After Fujimoto's death he was given the title of highest ranking exorcist of the Order.
  • Showy Invincible Hero: "As the Paladin, I must show off my power!"
  • Sole Survivor: He was told that his father was a duke who was possessed by a demon and killed everyone in the castle, leaving Arthur as the only survivor. The truth is he's the only clone who survived Lucifer's rampage on the Blue Night, thanks to Rick sacrificing himself to save him.
  • Talking Weapon: Caliburn is a chatterbox.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Lightning's evidence reveals Arthur is one of the Section 13's clones. Arthur refuses to accept it as truth because that would mean everything the Uzai clan told him were lies to manipulate him.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: By Mephisto's account, Arthur is a survivor of the Blue Night but, likely as a result of the event, he has no memory from his general life before the Blue Night, including the Asylum and Section 13.

    Lewin "Lightning" Light

Voiced by: Tomokazu Seki (Japanese), Sean Chiplock (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lightning_blue_exorcist.png

One of the four Arc Knights and often works with the current Paladin.

  • Batman Gambit: Made the Morinas contract on Yukio in such a way that the familiars he attached to it would help him should he break it instead of attacking him. He did not tell Yukio this, instead blackmailing Renzou into telling him once they were already at the Illuminati base. He was then able to use Yukio's activation of the contract to track down the Illuminati. Oh, and he likely also gave Yukio the information on Section 13 specifically because it would push him to defect.
  • The Beastmaster: He's one of the most powerful Tamer meisters seen in the series, specializing in Azazel kin.
  • Cassandra Truth: No one believed him at first when he delivered his findings to the high council.
  • Consummate Liar: Lies very convincingly in the course of his investigations, although be the time they find the lab Ryuji is starting to be able to tell.
  • Eccentric Mentor: To Ryuji as he finds him "interesting" and he also requested to have him as his assistant.
  • Eye-Obscuring Hat: He often wears a hat that obscures his eyes.
  • Faux Affably Evil: No matter what horrible thing he's doing, he acts friendly and polite.
  • Friend to All Living Things: After his introduction to the main cast, he reveals himself to be pretty tolerant and even understanding of demons. The main reason why he's such an amazing Tamer is because he gets along with demons so well.
  • The Gadfly: He really likes poking at people. Even if they don't notice his teasing (like Angel) he enjoys it.
  • Good Is Not Soft: He explicitly states his reason for being an exorcist is because he "loves this world". And because he loves it, he's going to absolutely crush anyone who might be working for those trying to destroy the world.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His eyes are usually covered by his hair, although one of his eyes peeks through sometimes. It symbolizes his crafty character.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: His go-to method for getting information is merciless violence along with threats.
  • Lack of Empathy: He mentions he has trouble caring about other people, to where he finds demons more interesting.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Most people call him Lightning instead of his actual name.
  • The Pig-Pen: He doesn't take many showers, and at one point Ryuji was seen by the others cleaning Lightning's clothes simply because Ryuji was sick of how bad they smelled.
  • Razor Wind: Uses sylphs in this manner during an interrogation.
  • Red Baron: His nickname comes from his title "The Master of Lightning".
  • The Smart Guy: Quickly figures out various things, including who's behind the Gehenna Gate in Russia and plans things out for the interrogation so he will win. Definitely contrasts him with Angel. He's also capable of screwing with Arias and even making up Fatal Verses for demons that previously didn't have any.
  • Street Smart: Very good at manipulating people, on the fly thinking, and keep calm no matter what. In fact, he's so visibly good at this that Ryuji requests to be made his apprentice for this very reason.
  • Summon Magic: He's a Tamer in contract with a Upper-tier air elemental, Furfur, as well as lower level sylphs. He's capable of summoning them without a circle or incantation, supposedly because he's befriended them. He even created a Fatal Verse to banish them if needed.
  • Unscrupulous Hero: When he gets called in to research or interrogate someone, he starts getting vicious. While interrogating a spy, he will even bring in their innocent family in order to get the information he wants. He later threatened a group of priests to get answers, despite having knowledge that speaking of it would kill them. He admits to not having a conscience or empathy that hold him back from crossing the line, so he will do anything to protect the world he loves with no concern of how many die for it.

    Lucy Yang
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucy_yang.jpg

Another Arc Knight, from the China branch.

  • Cool Old Lady: Was old when Shiro first became an exorcist and still kicks ass in the present.
    • She was also highly amused by Ryuji's Brutal Honesty about Lightning.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: She's a tiny old woman almost always seen in the company of huge guy Osceola.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: She's quite elderly, and small enough to ride around on Ryuji's shoulders.
  • Pint Sized Power House: It a tiny old woman who is also one of the strongest exorcists in the Order.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Decided for herself that Lightning's claims were worth looking into, in part due to recalling a comment Shiro made years ago about Drac, and went against procedure to take a close look. She also took the time to get Ryuji's opinion and brought him and Izumo along for the Romania Raid.
    • In the flashback arc she was willing to hear out Yuri's proposal for dealing with a rampaging golem without undue destruction, and also complemented her when it worked.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Decided to trust Lightning's assessment of Drac and convinced Osceola to free him and come with them to Romania to verify things for themselves.

    Osceola Redarm
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/osceola_redarm.jpg

Arc Knight, from the Mexico branch.

  • Braids, Beads and Buckskins: Wears his hair in a long braid and has feather hair ornaments. Aside from these, he dresses in the standard exorcist uniform.
  • Cool Old Guy: At least the same age as Shiro, if not older.
  • Feathered Serpent: Has one as a familiar. It gives him Super-Strength and heat powers.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: A huge buff man often seen in the company of the tiny Lucy Yang.
  • Large and in Charge: A high ranking exorcist who is also huge and muscular. Can and has lifted unruly comrades with one arm.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Redarm probably isn't his real surname.
  • Only Sane Man: Was the only Arc Knight at the meeting where Lewin presented his findings to bring up that torture was bad.
  • Super-Strength: Has demon contract related powers that give him the strength to deck a zombie chimera single handedly.

    Abel Franken
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/abel_franken.png

The Paladin preceding Shiro.

    Yuri Egin (Unmarked Spoilers)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuri_egin.jpg

Initially not much is known about her, aside from being Rin and Yukio's mother and a Lower First Class exorcist. Her past was later explored in a multi-chapter flashback arc.

  • Actual Pacifist: Despite being an exorcist, Yuri hated fighting and tried to deal with demons in a peaceful way if she could. Shiro disliked her because of this, since he believed destroying demons was the only way to deal with them.
  • All for Nothing: She tried so hard and sacrificed everything to try to make Satan less destructive, but nothing stuck and the revelation that he killed her childhood family years ago showed her there had never been any chance.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: She loved Shiro, who was a bad-tempered and violent rebel during their youth. Yuri could sense Shiro was highly troubled because of his harsh childhood and hoped that she could touch the soft spot he kept hidden beneath his rough exterior.
  • All-Loving Heroine: She was extremely caring towards people and tries to save even those she has to know don't deserve it.
  • Badass Pacifist: She stopped a rampaging golem by just getting close to it without any hostility and removing the paper that was controlling it.
  • The Beastmaster: She was one of the most accomplished Tamers the Order ever produced.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She was very sweet and patient, being willing to ignore a lot of Shiro's bad behavior, but as soon as he was a dick to Rick, she slapped him and told him off more harshly than we ever see her be again. She later makes Shiro apologize to Rick before agreeing to be his friend.
  • Bluff Worked Too Well: She gave herself to Satan and pretended to love him hoping to curb his worst impulses. This enabled the Order to pin all the blame for Satan on her.
  • Break the Cutie: Her pregnancy and difficult birth left her exhausted and on verge of death. She then learned Satan killed her adoptive family when she was a child, leaving her horrified and adding to her postpartum stress.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: She was the Gentle Girl to Shiro's Brooding Boy. Yuri wanted to understand what made him such a troubled person and tried to comfort him despite him rejecting her advances.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: She and Shiro met as children when she snuck into his hideout, as she was seeking shelter from the snow. When they grew older, Yuri fell in love with Shiro, but he tried to leave their relationship as Just Friends, even though he did like her back.
  • Death by Childbirth: She died of blood loss and exhaustion after a difficult birth. Heavily implied this was the result the Order was aiming for.
  • Destructive Romance: Her relationship with Satan destroyed her life and eventually killed her.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Shiro held her in his arms as she died, all while begging her to not leave him because he loved her.
  • Dogged Nice Girl: She told Shiro that she loved him, but was rejected. After Shiro agreed to be friends with her, she still made occasional advances, such as suggesting they adopt Shura together, but he rebuffed her.
  • First Friend: To Shiro. She was the only person who never stopped trying to befriend him despite his bad personality and Shiro did have a soft spot for her even though he didn't admit it.
  • Fluffy Tamer: Literally her job as a Tamer meister. She's amazing at it, having published multiple textbooks on the subject by her mid twenties.
  • Fond Memories That Could Have Been: As Yuri was dying from the strain of giving birth to Satan's sons, she and Shiro talked about the happy life they could have shared if they had gotten married and raised Rin and Yukio together.
  • Forceful Kiss: After Shiro told her about his past as a test subject, Yuri kissed him out of the blue.
  • Frame-Up: In order to conceal Section 13's existence and the facility's responsibility for Satan's incarnation, Mephisto tells the rest of the Order that Satan's invasion of the Japan branch was because Yuri invited Satan in.
  • A Friend in Need: She was constantly helping people out, especially Shiro. This was also part of her deal with Rinka/Satan.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Has always been fascinated by demons since childhood and happily befriended the mysterious ball of blue fire that interrupted her play time. She went on to pursue a career studying and caring for demons including Satan.
  • Go Out with a Smile: As her body ran out of energy after the childbirth, Yuri gave a weak smile to Shiro and her twin sons.
  • Heroic BSoD: She went into shock when Satan revealed that he was the one who killed the people who took care of her as a child.
  • Indignant Slap: She slapped Shiro when he took his Jerkass behavior too far by punching a fellow exorcist who was offering him a drink.
  • Insult Backfire: When Shiro called the demon farm as "a place for freaks like you" she got super excited and started telling him how much she liked working there.
  • Just Friends: Yuri had romantic feelings for Shiro, but he turned her down when she confessed to him. Since Yuri still wanted to spend time with him, he agreed to be friends with her, but he clearly wasn't being honest about liking her back. After years of friendship, Shiro was warned that if he didn't make a move on Yuri soon, some other man would take her away. Shiro never expected that man would be the most evil demon of all, Satan.
  • Last Kiss: As Yuri's body reached her limit, Shiro kissed her while he desperately begged her to not die on him.
  • Last Request: As she gave out her last breath, Yuri asked her twin sons only one thing: to be good brothers to each other.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Shiro. He was in love with Yuri and deeply regretted having failed to really express it until it was too late. Her influence also made him into a better person since Shura noted Shiro changed a lot after he began raising Yuri's sons.
  • Love Martyr: She remained in love with Shiro despite his Jerkass and womanizing tendencies.
  • Missing Mom: She died shortly after giving birth to Rin and Yukio, so her sons grew up without a mother. They didn't even know her name until Shura told them on their 16th birthday.
  • Morality Chain: Subverted. She tried to be this for Satan. The only times he didn't act like a monster were when he had Yuri's full attention to himself. Yuri took charge of Satan early in the development of his ego, when it looked possible to raise him to understand human morals. When he went full A God Am I after a single night of consuming all the unfiltered information he wanted, Yuri agreed to be his lover and stay by his side until his clone body died so he wouldn't kill people. Unfortunately, she finally realized she couldn't restrain Satan's destructive nature nor teach him compassion, as he was nothing but a selfish monster.
  • Morality Pet: For Shiro. She was his First Friend (even if he wouldn't call her that), and the first person he's ever shown wanting to protect. She also forced him own up to his actions and apologize to Rick for punching him.
  • Moses in the Bulrushes: She was found by retired exorcists in a junkyard and they raised her.
  • Motherhood Is Superior: She certainly loved her sons more than Satan ever could.
  • Opposites Attract: Yuri was a kind, friendly and optimistic Actual Pacifist. Despite their clashing ideologies, she fell in love with the rude, self-centered and violent Shiro. When asked what attracted her to Shiro, she said that she liked how he was her complete opposite.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her mother abandoned her as a baby and there's no information about her father. Yuri was found and raised by three hobos until they died in a fire when she was still a child.
  • The Pollyanna: As a child, she was was extremely cheerful despite the hardships of being homeless and eventually losing her adoptive family to a fire. As an adult, she was able to pursue a relationship with Satan with a smile.
  • Posthumous Character: She's long dead by the beginning of the series, only appearing in flashbacks.
  • Questionable Consent: While she gave birth to the sons of Satan, she only became his lover so he wouldn't hurt or kill anyone else until his body died.
  • Recruited from the Gutter: She was taken into the "Asylum" due to being able to see a demon as a child.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: She gave herself to Satan in an attempt to calm him down and prevent more deaths. This worked in the short term, ending the siege that had already claimed the lives of hundreds of exorcists, but ultimately her efforts failed and resulted in the Blue Night due to the actions of the Order and Lucifer.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Her brief appearance in flashback establishes her of having a similar kind and easy personality to Rin. The later time travel arc shows her to be studious and prone to overwork like Yukio.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Yuri never romantically loved anyone other than Shiro her entire life.
  • Snow Means Death: After she gave birth to the twins, Shiro took Yuri to a snow mountain to escape the True Cross Order that wanted her dead. While they were walking in the snow, Yuri's body reached its limit and she died while Shiro begged her to stay with him.
  • Street Urchin: She was homeless as a child. There were some other homeless people who raised her, but they ended up dying in a fire caused by Satan.
  • Tsurime Eyes: In contrast to her gentle personality, she had sharp eyes which she later passed down to her son Rin.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Yuri was the catalyst of the Blue Night tragedy through her interactions with Satan. In her childhood, she played with the "Rinka" fireballs which, unknown to her, were the premature form of Satan. This caused Satan to form his first attachment to anything, soon turning into possessive obsession, and he started desiring to obtain a human body to be with Yuri physically. His first experiment of Demonic Possession resulted in the death of Yuri's adoptive family. After several years, he successfully possessed the body of a Azazel clone. Through Yuri's education, "Rinka" developed intelligence and a personality that eventually became known as the evil Satan.
  • What Does She See in Him?: Her friends didn't understand why she loved Shiro since he was originally a lecher and an asshole who treated everyone terribly, including her.
  • Womb Horror: Her first son was born by literally exploding out of the birth canal in a blast of blue flames. No wonder she didn't live to tell it.

    Rick

Yuri's best friend.

  • Fluffy Tamer: Has a Tamer meister and works at the demon farm with Yuri.
  • Happily Married: Is married and has a son.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He died protecting a clone, who eventually became Arthur, from Lucifer.
  • Nice Guy: He looked after Yuri when she first arrived at Asylum and is one of the few not to judge her for her interests. This continues into adulthood where he reminds her to look after her health and shows concern over her tendency to focus so much emotion on people who won't reciprocate. Yuri describes him as someone helpful and popular who has lots of friends. He's also apparently everyone's drinking buddy.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Yuri. They've been friends ever since she arrived at Asylum. Later they worked together at the demon farm and often hung out after work as well.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: A subdued version, but Rick frequently comments on Yuri's fixation on Shiro, pointing out their relative social status early on and questioning what she even sees in him after years of yearning.

Another friend of Yuri and Rick from Asylum

    The Grigori (present)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grigori_6.jpg

A trio of mysterious cloaked figures who act as the highest authority in the Order. They each stand for one of the founding demons.

  • Becoming the Mask: The Shemihaza Grigori mentions giving up human emotions when she took the position.
  • In the Hood: They all wear elaborate robes with hoods that keep their faces and forms thoroughly hidden.
  • The Needs of the Many: This is the justification for running section 13. Without it Lucifer would kill himself and take the entire planet with him.
    • This was also their reason for wanting Yuri and the twins dead; not because any of them deserved it but because Satan would never stop coming back so long as he had something to obsess over.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Azazel's nephilim bloodline died out some time ago so they had to find someone else to stand in for his Grigori representative.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: They are descendants (mostly) of the founding demons and inherited some of their powers.
  • Uneven Hybrid: Their demon bloodlines are so diluted at this point that they're essentially human.

    Grigori (original)

Azazel

Demon King of Air and Spirits, one of the founders of the Order.

  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Chapter 86 reveals that a clone of his is the biological father of Rin and Yukio, technically making him their uncle. In a case of Generation Xerox, clones can be considered twins, much like Rin and Yukio. Perhaps even more shockingly Shiro Fujimoto was also revealed to be a clone of his.
  • Taken for Granite: He's currently a statue, having chosen not to take a new host when his previous one began to crystallize.

Shemihaza

One of the Sol, Emperor of Creation, one of the demons who sided with humans and founded the Order.

Armumahel

One of the Sol, Emperor of Destruction, one of the demons who sided with humans and founded the Order.

  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: It turns out that prolonged exposure to him or anything derived from him can cause this in humans. It's actually a plot point that weapons made from him are super effective against demons but nearly impossible for humans to use safely.
  • Power of the Void: Is the Emperor of Destruction and has the power to destroy/erode souls.
  • Taken for Granite: Is currently a mass of crystals from which various weapons and holy water are synthesized, having chosen not to take a new host when the previous one began to crystallize.

    The Uzai Clan
A mysterious group of people who serve the Shemihaza Grigori.
  • The Clan: An extended family devoted to Shemihaza.
  • Manipulative Bastard: The Uzai clan took Arthur in after the Blue Night and raised him to be the way he is, feeding him a fake story about his origins and memory loss and encouraging his rigid opinions.
  • Perpetual Smiler: All of them smile all the time.

    Section 13 (MANGA SPOILERS
A super secret laboratory that operated within the Japan Branch with the purpose of creating durable hosts for the demon kings.

In general

  • Dark and Troubled Past: Every. Single. Clone.
  • Would Hurt a Child: They used the clones as lab rats for elixer experiments. It was inhumane and often fatal, with few making it to their teens and only 2 known examples being at all functional in adulthood.

Individuals

Drac

Head scientist in charge of elixer research.

  • High-Class Glass: Wears a monocle.
  • Life-or-Limb Decision: He cut off his arm to buy time to escape Lightning's pursuit.
  • Mad Scientist: As the head of Section 13 he performed and oversaw decades of research into cloning and perfect regeneration, which has continued into the present under the Illuminati.
  • The Mole: He's an Illuminati spy.

Goro

An Azazel clone brother of Shiro and Satan's first host body.

  • Chemically-Induced Insanity: The experiments performed on him rendered him brain dead early in life.
  • Expendable Clone: At first, but later averted when Satan's gradual takeover of his body made him their best experimental subject for the elixir. It was to the point that maintaining access to Goro's body for experiments mattered more to Drac than the fact Satan even existed.
  • Numerical Theme Naming: Like all Azazel clones he's named by a number.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He has all of one scene where he's not comatose or possessed and even then he was past the point of being coherent.
  • You Are Number 6: He is number 5.
