In Basilisk, despite having come from the same tribe, the Iga and Kouga clans have been locked into a feud hundreds of years old. Their grudge was once almost settled in a marriage of their leaders, but neither clan seemed able to set aside their hatred for one another. With this generation, once again, another attempt is made for a final treaty between the two in a wedding of the anticipated clan heads. However, when the truce to keep the peace is broken, both sides are all to eager to begin fighting again. The ten best warriors are chosen to represent each side and in order to achieve victory, they must eliminate all ninja on the opposite side.

Can the Starcrossed Lovers overcome the oncoming battles, or is history doomed to repeat itself, with Kouga and Iga to remain in unending war?

Each ninja possesses a unique technique, but in general the Kouga ninjas have more stealthy and spy-related skills, while the Iga use theirs to attack their foes directly.

The twenty "chosen ones" are:

The Kouga warriorsnote
Lead by Martial Pacifist, Gennosuke.the Iga or Kouga clans are each represented by their ten best warriors.
    Kouga Danjou

Kouga Danjou

Voiced by: Kiyoshi Kobayashi (Japanese), Grant James (English), Manuel Bastos (Latin American Spanish)
The old leader of the Kouga clan, and grandfather of Gennosuke. He used to be in love with lady Ogen. He is skilled at using poisoned needles. Gets impaled in the chest by Ogen, making him the first ninja to die.

    Kouga Gennosuke

Kouga Gennosuke

Voiced by: Kosuke Toriumi (Japanese), Troy Baker (English), Luis Miguel Pérez (Latin American Spanish)

Danjo's heir and strongest member of the Kouga ninja. He's a peace-loving idealist who's genuinely in love with Oboro and wants to put an end to years of hate and rivalry. His special power is a "Do Jutsu" (Fierce Ability) in his eyes, that allows him to send an attacker's killing intent back at him. Commits suicide after witnessing Oboro's suicide. He is the very last of the twenty ninjas to die.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: He is polite and calm, but no one should provoke him enough to use his Death Glare. Those who do will die.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: A trait he takes from his grandpa.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Gennosuke's deprived of both his vision and (by extension) his ninja arts for a good chunk of the story. This only makes him the most dangerous combatant to a lesser degree than before, it doesn't actually bump him down.
  • Death Glare: Literally! His Do Jutsu allows him to reverse an assailant's killing intent and force them to commit suicide. He also looks very livid when using this power.
  • Good Is Not Soft: He is a peace-loving man who desires harmony between the Iga and Kouga clans above all else, but will not hesitate to use lethal force to defend his clan when the time comes. After the no-hostilies pact was dissolved, Gennusuke was ultimately capable of ordering the death of his Oboro not once, but twice. He even callously dismissed her as "nothing but an Iga woman" when ordering her death the first time.
  • The Dreaded: And for good reason.
  • Driven to Suicide: After witnessing Oboro's death in his own arms he declares the Iga as winners, takes Oboro's body with him and commits Seppuku in a river.
  • Handicapped Badass: Even after being blinded by the Seven Days potion he can still fight and slay Tenzen, although Tenzen did manage to give him a very difficult challenge.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Jousuke.
  • Idiot Ball: A big one. When him and Jousuke meet the 5 Iga ninja with Oboro while having their rendevous, he thinks nothing of the fact that the Iga ninja all suddenly change their behavior after reading the scroll that Jousuke retrived in a fighter earlier. Then he ignore's Jousuke's very reasonable claim that the Iga are acting suspicious (who flat-out reject his request to read the scroll) and his reminder that until Gennosuke and Oboro are married, the two clans are at war; and even ignores the fact that Akeginu is radiating real bloodlust in their supposed mock-duel for the scroll (keep in mind that his power is that he can literally see and reflect bloodlust). They then follow the Iga ninja deep into Iga territory, where Gennosuke just writes off the bloodlust he feels as "only natural, since our clans have hated each other for 400 years." Jousuke realizes that something is wrong after he's imprisoned in what looks like a normal room, but manages to escape and beat Akeginu, only to be killed by Jingoro before he can warn Gennosuke. Despite the fact that Jousuke disappears overnight without warning while deep in enemy territory, Gennosuke buys the excuse that he ran back home to Kagerou because he got rejected by Akeginu. It doesn't take until he finally sees the ninja scroll with Jousuke's name crossed out in blood that he realizes he's in danger. Way to go, Gennosuke!
  • Karmic Death: Weaponized, as he inflicts one on his enemies using his Dojutsu.
  • Love at First Sight: For Oboro.
  • Master Swordsman: Carries a katana with him, and even when blinded he manages to behead Tenzen with ease.
  • Nice Guy: Is very peaceful and reasonable. Considering that he can kill you with a glare, that's a positive thing.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He tries to keep his cool as the leader of the Kouga after the death of his grandpa. Sadly, all the stakes are against him.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Let alone crimson with golden irises ...
  • Sole Survivor: Not for long though...
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: He and Oboro. When the war between their clans resume after the no-hostilies pact is dissolved, Oboro can't bring herself to kill Gennusuke, but he ultimately orders her death twice, at one point even saying that she is "nothing but an Iga woman" to him, suggesting that on some level Gennusuke cares more about his clan than her.
  • Warrior Poet: Plays the flute and is highly skilled with the sword.

    Kazamachi Shougen

Kazamachi Shougen

Voiced by: Ryuusaku Chijiwa (Japanese), Chris Cason (English), Armando Volcanes (Latin American Spanish)
A hunchbacked spidery-looking man, he's the first Kouga Ninja shown alongside Danjo. Can spit a web-like phlegm that's stronger than glue, and secrete chemicals from his hands and feet that let him move along his "webbing" without getting stuck. He's ambushed by the Iga ninja and finished off by Hotarubi. This makes him the third ninja to die. A near carbon-copy of Kazamachi appears during the Iga's "visit" to the Kouga village, distinguishable only by the fact he lacks Kazamachi's missing upper teeth.

  • Animal Motifs: Spider, of course.
  • Arachnid Appearance and Attire: The combination of his spindly limbs, tendency to get around on all fours, bulbous hunchback, and brow studs makes him look a lot like a giant spider.
  • Defiant to the End: When Hotarubi tries to force him to confess all he knows, he spits on her cheek. And he gets 'nightmarishly stabbed for his trouble.
  • Gonk: Ugly of face, hunched of back, with teeth knocked out to let his grotesque tongue protrude and six crimson studs embedded in his brows in two vertical rows of three, which furthers his resemblance to a spider.
  • Hidden Depths: In a flashback, he's shown that he enjoys fishing in his spare time, using both a pole or his web spit to catch fish.
  • Irony: A spider-like man defeated by a swarm of butterfly while in his own web, no less...
  • Mundane Utility: In a flashback he's shown using his web spit to nail the fish he's catching to a rock.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: Which he uses to better direct his web spit. In the anime, some scenes even imply he unleashes his spittle from it, like a tube.
  • Super Spit: His phlegm proves incredibly dangerous when he uses it to block his enemies, preventing jutsus or blocking multiple people in a web.
  • Underestimating Badassery: He manages to trap all his attackers sans Hotarubi in his web, but ignores her and tries to kill the defenseless Iga... only to be stormed by Hotarubi's butterflies, which distracts him and allows Hotarubi and Nenki to kill him.

    Udono Jousuke

Udono Jousuke

Voiced by: Katsui Tara (Japanese), Jeremy Inman (English), Emerson Gutiérrez (Latin American Spanish)

A fat, jolly ninja who's often seen near Gennosuke. Despite looking like a moron, he's very competent and quite smarter than he looks. His body is like a rubber balloon, making him able to squeeze through small openings, absorb physical impacts without harm, or expand his body to become a living ball that can propel itself super-high into the air or roll at high speeds along the ground. Is killed by Jingoro, who forces himself down his gullet while in slug form. This makes him the fifth ninja to die.

  • Acrofatic: Because his "balloon technique" lets him inflate himself like a balloon, he can leap incredibly high, and move with incredible speed by rolling around.
  • Be the Ball: To get around more quickly.
  • Berserk Button: The smile from his face quickly dissipates when he finds Jingoro after following the trail leading to Gennosuke's room and puts two and two together.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He's a cheerful guy who seems to be more into flirting and fighting than anything else, but damn he's good at fighting.
  • Big Fun: Very pudgy, but also a lecherous, crude, good-hearted party animal.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He attempts to woo Akeginu with hamfisted and crude come-ons, and in a flashback episode is shown groping Okoi, with dialogue implying this is far from unusual for him.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: There's a reason why Gennosuke trusts him.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: He tries to stop Gennosuke from accepting the invitation to the Iga village, but stops as soon as Akeginu politely asks him to come as well, offering a nice sight of her cleavage.
  • Fat Idiot: Subverted, he intentionally behaves as one to catch his opponents offguard.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Gennosuke.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He's extremely fast and nimble despite his size.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: As mentioned above, he's a lovable if insistent guy when it comes to wooing women.
  • Oh, Crap!: Goes from delighted to terrified when Akeginu accepts his challenge... and starts bleeding profusely from her face, scaring him out of his wits.
  • Rubber Man: His body is like a rubber balloon.

    Jimushi Juubei

Jimushi Juubei

Voiced by: Atsushi Imaruoka (Japanese), Eric Vale (English), Rubén León (Latin American Spanish)

One of the more mysterious and grotesque members, he's a limbless man who serves his clan as an astromancer and seer. Though he has no arm nor legs, but can fight with an extremely long prehensile tongue and a knife hidden in his throat. His scale armor allows him to crawl around really fast like a snake. He kills Tenzen for the first time, but is cornered by the latter after resurrecting, and is promptly bifurcated by Tenzen. This makes him the fourth ninja to die.

  • Animal Motifs: Snakes.
  • Bond One-Liner/Badass Boast: Does one after killing Tenzen with his spear. He comments that if the enemies knew of his technique he would be dead, but by the time the enemy actually learn of his technique it's they who are dead.
  • Defiant to the End: Cornered by Tenzen and the Iga Ninja, he still tries to kill Tenzen again with his technique.
  • The Grotesque: His features aren't so ugly, but he's physically deformed in the "human torso" style — he has no arms or legs, just a head atop a torso. This forces him to be carried or crawl everywhere.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: What Tenzen did to him. Vertically, since he already was legless...
  • Handicapped Badass:
    • Yup, just because he doesn't have limbs that doesn't mean that he can't kick your ass. Tenzen learnt it the hard way.
    • In the Novel, He's "just" quadriplegic, but can still regurgitate blades at high speed and turn his skin in a scaly, hard hide.
  • Meaningful Name: Jimushi means "Grub". Look at him when he crawls on the ground, moving like a centipede.
  • Oh, Crap!: Sadly he didn't know about Tenzen's resurrecting skills.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: His only weapon. Though considering how freaking skilled he is in using it to replace his limbs...
  • Seers: He's an accomplished seer who can predict the future by reading the stars. In a flashback, it's mentioned that his predictions are never wrong.

    Kisaragi Saemon

Kisaragi Saemon

Voiced by: Yoji Ueda (Japanese), Jason Liebrecht (English), Ledner Belisario (Latin American Spanish)

Member of the Kouga Ninja he's a short and sneaky guy whose eyes are always shut. He's Okoi's older brother. His powers allow him to transform into anyone, simulate voices and even change his size. He's eventually tricked by Tenzen and killed by the soldiers escorting the Iga ninja.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite his docile looks, this is the same dude who slices Hotarubi's arms off and then proceeds to impale her.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Towards Okoi. When she died, all bets were off in regards to him. Certainly explains the horrible way in which he killed Hotarubi, when not even a single hour had passed.
  • Death by Irony: He kills Hotarubi and Akeginu by disguising himself as someone they trusted, and backstabbing them once their guard was down. He dies in this exact same manner when Tenzen disguises himself as one of Ofuku's men.
  • Eyes Always Shut: He opens them only when experiencing strong emotions.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: By several spears no less.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Can be very sly and sneaky. Especially seen when he imitates Akeginu's voice to confuse a blinded Koshirou and allow Kagerou to give him a Kiss of Death.
  • Master of Disguise: He can turn into anyone at will by taking a mold of their face from a mud mask. It's stated that he can even change his height, but for some reasons he can't copy the nostril's hair.
  • Nice Guy: When off duty, he's rather reasonable and not a bad dude. Once he's your opponent, however, you're fucked.
    • The anime noticeably made him less ruthless and more sympathetic.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Oboro's eyes disband his perfect disguise as Yashamaru and much later, (while disguised as Tenzen) when the soldiers (and Tenzen among them) reveal that Tenzen's powers involve coming back from the dead.
  • Smug Smiler: Downplayed, but both him and Gyoubu flashes the terrified Iga ninja (and a furious Tenzen) a taunting smirk as they leave Iga village with Gennosuke.
  • The Stoic: The least emotive of the Kouga, though by no means cold...
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: He's the tiny guy to his sister's huge girl.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Averted, after killing Hotarubi, he comments that normally he'd not harm a woman, but since his sister wasn't offered mercy, he won't refrain from doing so.

    Muroga Hyouma

Muroga Hyouma

Voiced by: Yasushi Miyabayashi(Japanese), John Gremillion (English), Salvador Pérez (Latin American Spanish)

A good friend of Saemon and Danjou's advisor. He's Gennosuke's maternal uncle and he taught him everything he knows, including the Dojutsu. He appears to be blind and has an excellent hearing but he can actually use the Dojutsu. In fact he can't turn it off, hence why he always keeps his eyes closed. Gets killed by Koshirou, whose blindness allows him to work around the Doujutsu's only weakness.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's the most sympathetic and reasonable of the Kouga, but still, you really shouldn't mess with him.
  • Death Glare: Literally! Just like Gennosuke, albeit always active.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Two fatal examples against Koshirou: first, he didn't predict Koshirou's blindness, which makes his Dojutsu useless and gets his ear sliced. Later, he manages to outgambit his opponent by throwing two objects to distract him, but because of his damaged ear he doesn't hear Koshirou's returning sickle until it's too late to dodge, allowing his opponent to pinpoint his location and kill him.
  • Died Standing Up: Against Koshirou, which drives the Iga ninja mad, as he can't determine if his opponent is dead or not.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: Luckily not shown, but he gets his face tore to pieces by Koshirou's vortex.
  • Handicapped Badass: The man has severe eyesight problems, though the exact source and effects vary per media. In any case, he's still not to be trifled with.
  • Power Incontinence: His Dojutsu is constantly active, so he has to keep his eyes shut and essentially render himself blind in order to keep from killing others accidentally, only ever opening them when instructed to by his allies.
  • Parental Substitute: Helped raise Gennosuke after the death of his older sister aka Gennosuke's mom.
  • The Strategist: Not only he's a talented fighter, but pretty good at making plans. Only Koushirou's lack of eyesight could out-gambit him.

    Kasumi Gyoubu

Kasumi Gyoubu

Voiced by: Katsuhiro Kitagawa (Japanese), Christopher Sabat (English), Héctor Indriago (Latin American Spanish)

A large and massive ninja of Kouga. Always seen around Hyouma and Saemon. He's very strong and can merge with any solid surface, allowing him to move around unseen. As a child he was traumatized by his father's death and shaved his head because of that. He's impaled by Tenzen while trying to flee from him and his corpse is merged inside a wooden panel, exhibited as a warning to the Kougas. He is the twelth ninja to die.

  • Adaptational Badass: In the manga he mostly employs his powers for sneak attacks and ambushes. In the anime, at one point he emerges in plain sight and grabs two katana in order to face the Iga Ninja in combat.
  • Bald Head of Toughness: Subverted. He's a giant of a man, with not a single strand of hair on his head, which makes you think his deadliness comes from his brute physical strength. However, it's his more covert abilities that truly makes him one of the toughest of the Kouga clan.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: There's only a white blank on his groin where his genitals should be.
  • Big Damn Heroes: First when he saves Saemon from Yashamaru. Later, when he stops Tenzen from raping Oboro by snapping his neck. (Didn't likely intend to save Oboro, but whatever).
  • The Big Guy: He's easily the largest member of the Kouga ninja, as well as the physically strongest.
  • Dead Guy on Display: Is stabbed to death by Tenzen when he's merged with a wooden panel, and since his death doesn't allow for the corpse to be de-merged, the whole panel is exhibited in the nearest port as a warning to the Kougas.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Dude must strip to use his powers. Guess what happens.
  • Genius Bruiser: Large and massive but also quite smart.
  • Gonk: The fact that he must be nude to use his ninja skills doesn't help.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: At one point he decides to leave the main group despite Gennosuke's plans and directly go for the Iga ninja.
    • He might have pulled it off, too, if not for Tenzen's resurrection powers, and the accidental death of an innocent father.
  • Meaningful Name: Kasumi means "Mist", and he's surprisingly elusive and stealthy...
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In the anime, he's horrified when he mistakenly kills the flautist father in front of everyone, including his kid. The fact that his dad's death was his own Start of Darkness doesn't help. And it gets worse as his shock over that is what lets Tenzen kill him.
  • Odd Friendship: In the anime he gets along pretty well with Okoi, and they're even shown hunting boars together.
  • Oh, Crap!: Like the others, he freaks out when he sees Tenzen alive once again in front of him.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Young Gyoubu, as per the anime, was a very sweet child. Then his father died...

    Okoi

Okoi

Voiced by: Haruka Kimura (Japanese), Monica Rial (English), Maythe Guedes (Latin American Spanish)

One of the two kunoichi of Kouga, and also Saemon's little sister. Okoi's a large, well muscled tomboy, but she's ready to take advantage of her large breasts if needed. She's essentially a human-leech who can drain people's blood through her skin, causing physical pain. The more contact, the quicker she's able to absorb. Even more effective as they are unable to separate from the area they're touching. Okoi is captured and tortured by the Iga clan, and while she manages to kill Rousai in the process, she is in turn killed by Nenki while trying to escape, making her the eighth ninja to die.

  • Adaptation Expansion: Gets more screentime in the anime, including an episode where she tries to chase down an unknown spy (who's revealed to be Hanzo's son Kyouhachirou).
  • Amazonian Beauty: Very tall. Very muscle-bound. Very beautiful.
  • Animal Motifs: Leeches.
  • Badass in Distress: The Iga clan capture her and torture her. This doesn't stop her from killing Rousai and if not for Jingorou luckily escaping due to his technique and Nenki's body being covered in hair, Okoi may have taken them out as well. However, Nenki's able to counterattack.
  • Dark Action Girl: Considering her powers...
  • Human Pincushion: Gets impaled by Nenki's hair and turned into this.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: Pretends to be wounded, defenseless and totally unable to fight back with Jingorou, in order to catch him offguard and suck his blood.
  • Kiss of Death: On Rousai's neck, to further accelerate her bloodsucking powers.
  • The Lad-ette: Kagerou, Akeginu and Oboro are rather girly in their own ways. Okoi... isn't, to put it politely.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's a large-chested, very pretty and very buff young woman whose powers and Animal Motifs actually require her to not be covered from head to toe.
    • Fan Disservice: Watching her vomit the massive amounts of blood drained from Rousai, on the other hand, is less alluring...
  • Odd Friendship: With Juubei (the two are tea-time buddies, so she says) and Gyoubu (with whom she often goes boar-hunting).
  • Plucky Girl: She will never EVER give up on anything she wants or needs. Even when she's about to kick it, she manages to tell Saemon where's the scroll in her last words.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Okoi is a tomboyish Boisterous Bruiser. Saemon is a calm Master of Disguise.
  • Stripperiffic: Again, justified as she needs to touch someone with her bare skin to suck his blood.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: She's far taller than her brother, as well as much more muscular.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Her seiyuu gaves her a somewhat girly voice, especially when she squeals in disgusts after seeing Nenki after her.

    Kagerou

Kagerou

Voiced by: Risa Hayamizu (Japanese), Stephanie Young (English), Melanie Henríquez (Latin American Spanish)

The other kunoichi of the Kouga clan. She's a feminine woman with black hair and red lips, madly in love with Gennosuke, and vehemently jealous of Oboro. When she's aroused, her breath becomes a poisonous miasma. She's raped and horrifically tortured by Tenzen with needles, which breaks her even further.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: The anime makes her a full-blown yandere.
  • Angst: Given her powers, this is pretty justified.
  • Blessed with Suck: Big time. Since her breath doesn't distinguish friend or foe, she's unable to even embrace the one she's in love with without starting to kill them. Discussion between Hyoma and Saemon reveal it's likely an inherited technique as her mother also posessed such an ability, and how it was about time for Kagerou to start trying to bear children; something they note will doubtlessly kill countless (very willing) men before she conceives.
  • Bodyguard Crush: For Gennosuke.
  • Break the Cutie: While Oboro is the "champion" for this trope, Kagerou follows suit.
    • After enduring what she had all for his sake, hearing Gennosuke break the vow he made to kill Oboro himself completely shatters her will to live.
  • Broken Bird: Poor woman had severe issues from before the story started. Being put through the emotional grinder harder than near anyone else in the series really doesn't help.
    • One of Kagerou's greatest desires is to kiss Gennosuke and make love with him, but due to any man who lay with her dying, she can never do so. The only time Kagerou's ever able to is when imagining it's him while being raped.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She hates Oboro and wishes to witness Gennosuke slaying her. Far more accentuated in the anime though, where she reaches Yandere extremes.
  • Femme Fatale: Her special ninja skill is based on this; she seduces men into bedding her, then kills them with the poison she breathes during intimacy. She doesn't need to bed a guy; as "demonstrated" by the river with that poor fly, merely desire can activate it and with Koushirou, a kiss of hers will be fatal.
  • Meaningful Name: "Kagerou" means "Heat Wave", but can also refer to the Mayfly, an insect whose many males will pursue a lone female and die shortly after mating.
  • Out with a Bang: Weaponized, as she inflicts this on anyone who's fool enough to lay with her, even a kiss is lethal. Except Tenzen, who's resurrected by his powers.
  • Poisonous Person: As said above, Kagerou's body can release poison in specific circumstances.
  • Rape as Drama: Tenzen immediately starts trying to rape Kagerou the moment they're alone together. It isn't clear exactly how far he got in his assault, however Kagerou still managed to kill him.
  • Rape Leads to Insanity: The poor woman already wasn't super stable to start with, but the very sexualised torture that Tenzen puts her through smashes what's left of her sanity.
  • Sword Cane: More a shikomizue, but still.
  • Together in Death: Begs for Gennosuke to kill them both. Nearly succeeds in her dying attempt to take him with her.
  • Yandere: Would rather kill Gennosuke than let Oboro ever be with him again.

The Iga Clan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iga_tsubagakure.jpg
The Iga warriorsnote
The long time hated rival of the Kouga. The Iga ninja use their techniques for more offensive purposes. Many view the next successor Oboro with some ire, not only for her lack of skill as a ninja, but also her willingness to finally make peace with Kouga.
    Iga-no-Ogen

Iga-no-Ogen:

Voiced by: Hisako Kyoda (Japanese), Juli Erickson (English), Otilia Docaos (Latin American Spanish)

The elderly leader of the Iga clan, she used to be in love with Danjou. Ogen doesn't seem to have any outright abilities other than a hawk she appears to have a psychic bond with. She's the second person to die in the series, killed by Danjou's needles. Not before taking him with her though.

  • Brutal Honesty: When informing Oboro that she's far too clumsy to be a ninja. (Though she's not as harsh in the anime.)
  • Friend to All Living Things: Seems to be her power, given how her hawk's timely distraction of Danjou allows her the opportunity to kill him. It was also trained to follow the commands of whomever is handling its tassel.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: As a young woman, she was very pretty who looked a lot like the smoking hot Akeginu.
  • Made of Iron: Survived a needle piercing across her neck and another straight through her mouth long enough to pull it out and use it to kill Danjou.
  • Never Mess with Granny: Ogen looks like a quiet granny, but is actually a very skilled ninja who ruled her clan firmly and when mortally injured, lasted enough to kill the person who wounded her.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Danjou. They were supposed to be the ones getting married to end the rivalry.
  • Together in Death. With Danjou, again. As soon as she fatally injured him with his own needle weapon, she took a tearful look at his corpse and then calmly laid down by his side to die with him.

    Iga-no-Oboro

Iga-no-Oboro

Voiced by: Nana Mizuki (Japanese), Laura Bailey (English), Jhaidy Barboza (Latin American Spanish)

Ogen's granddaughter and Gennosuke's soon-to-be wife. She's a very sweet and clumsy person. She can't fight, but her eyes have the power of cancelling any ninja power or technique seen, which is considered as one of the most deadly powers in the whole series. After going through a long series of Break the Cutie moments she kills herself in order to allow Gennosuke to win.

  • Anti-Magic: Her "Piercing Eyes" are basically this, and are mentioned to be the deadliest power ever among both clans.
  • Break the Cutie: Oohh boy. She's a gentle and kind young woman who just wants to marry her boyfriend Gennosuke so they can finish the long-time hatred between their clans. But then the story hits and she's brutally, horribly broken...
  • Cursed with Awesome: How many of the other ninjas see her. Girl cannot fight at all and yet she has the potentially deadliest power.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Pointed out by her own grandmother too. And not Played for Laughs.
  • Driven to Suicide: She cannot bring herself to kill Gennosuke in the final showdown, so she kills herself instead.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: She's a very feminine and shy young woman from a high-class family, and she's always seen dressed in purple kimonos.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She's ready to allow Gennosuke to kill her and ultimately kills herself rather than harm Gennosuke.
  • The Ingenue: And how! Much to the frustration of her more cynical or bloodthirsty clan members who're eager to solve matters with the Kouga the old way.
  • Nice Girl: She's a very sweet and selfless young woman.
  • Power Incontinence: Oboro is unable to turn off her Mystic Eye, thus anytime she makes eye contact with someone they cannot use their powers.
  • Plucky Girl: Best seen when after Tenzen's decapitation at the hands of Gennosuke, she does her best to hide an unconscious Gennosuke from Ofuku's men. And she could have gone away with that, if it weren't for Tenzen's parasyte.
  • Purple Is Powerful: She has purple eyes and her Piercing Eyes can nullify any technique, no matter how powerful.
  • Spanner in the Works: Four times, actually. First, she disrupts Chikuma's powers during his attempted duel with Gennosuke, resulting in his Razor Wind ripping out his eyes. Then she seals her own Anti-Magic eyes with the Seven Days Ointment so she won't be tempted to use them against her own clansmen — also making impossible for Tenzen to use her against others. Later, she's vital into killing Tenzen himself when her eyes are unsealed right when he's reviving himself after being defeated by Gennosue. And last but not least, her Heroic Suicide derails Ofuku's own gambits, sending her into a mighty Villainous Breakdown.
  • Take a Third Option: Torn between killing Gennosuke or allowing him to kill her, she chose this.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Calls Akeginu out when she violently maims Hyouma's body.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: At first, though this trait is often put to the test and criticized by her own companions as the story proceeds.

    Yashamaru

Yashamaru

The first Iga ninja shown along with Ogen. He's a pretty boy who can use the hair of deceased women, treated with animal oils, as deadly garrot wires. He's Hotarubi's boyfriend. He's killed by Gyoubu, making him the seventh ninja to die.

  • Ax-Crazy: Pacifism aside, he looks a tad too much happy at the prospect of killing Kouga with his Razor Floss, sporting a Slasher Smile as he prepares to do so. Ironically, this is also something he seems to have in common with Hotarubi.
  • Defiant to the End: He still tries to kill Gyoubu when the latter has his arms into a solid grip.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Yashamaru ''will' fight for the Igas when it's needed, but he mostly just wants to go home and live with his girlfriend in peace.
  • Neck Snap: How Gyoubu kills him in self defense.
  • Nice Guy: He's one of the few ninjas who doesn't really enjoy fighting and prefers to live peacefully with Hotarubi.
  • Razor Floss: Made from the hair of deceased women bathed in a special oil. In the novel, it was a single rope. As shown in combat with Shougen, he can also manipulate it with his feet in a pinch.
  • Traumatic Haircut: During the battle against Shogen, his long black hair gets hacked off by his own weapon.

    Yakushiji Tenzen

Yakushiji Tenzen

Voiced by: Show Hayami (Japanese), Mark Stoddard (English), Rafael Monsalve (Latin American Spanish)

A very high-ranked Iga ninja serving Ogen, he's one of the strongest members, and surely one of the most evil characters in the manga, and that's saying something. He worked covertly to prolong the Iga-Kouga war. Has an unhealthy attraction for Oboro. Thanks to a parasitic twin living in his body he can come Back from the Dead at will. Is eventually beheaded by Gennosuke and destroyed when Oboro use her Anti-Magic on the parasite twin while at work, thus nullifying his powers.

  • Adaptation Deviation: In the manga, his parasite is identified as his twin brother, while in the anime the identity of the parasite is left ambiguous.
  • Adaptational Badass: In the manga and novel, he trips over a broken board and only inflicts superficial injuries on Gennosuke before being decapitated. In the anime, he matches Gennosuke blow-for-blow and inflicts several serious injuries on his opponent, including running him through with a katana.
  • Asshole Victim: After all of the atrocities he committed, up to and including prolonging the Iga-Kouga war and trying to rape Oboro twice, Tenzen more than had it coming when Oboro killed him.
  • Attempted Rape: Twice on Oboro and also on Kagerou.
  • Ax-Crazy: During his fight with Gennosuke.
  • Back from the Dead: He was born with a parasitic twin inside his body. Said twin is normally seen as a small bulge on his ear. If Tenzen's killed, the twin reach the wound and "eat it", allowing Tenzen to raise from the dead.
  • Big Bad: Manipulating the two clans to continue their battle since Danjou and Ogen were in love, Tenzen immediately capitalizes on the nullification of the no hostilities pact, using trickery and violence to wipe out the Kouga clan and take Oboro as his bride, ruling Japan behind the shogun candidate they fight for.
  • Body Horror: How his resurrection works. This gets disgustingly bad the last time, when you see the parasite using Tenzen's sliced neck as a mouth to speak.
  • Break the Haughty: As Oboro's eyes finally kill him, all of his sanity completely snaps.
  • Bullying a Dragon: He does this with fatal results with both Jubee Jimushi and Hyouma. Good thing for him and bad for everyone else, he can afford to do so.
  • The Chessmaster: He's the mastermind behind the new conflict in the anime.
  • Death Seeker: In the film his motivation is to finally have a shot at dying for real.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: The Iga's respect for him makes him the de facto leader in Ogen's absence and with her death it appears as though he's instigating the following conflict on her behalf when in fact he's used the situation to essentially usurp control and battle for his own ends.
  • Dual Wielding: In the film, he carries around and uses two chakrams.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: In the novel, he even sports purple lips.
  • Evil Chancellor: In the Iga clan. His intentions go directly against those of Ogen and later Oboro's, and his main goal is to take over the Ifa Ninja and then over the Shogunate.
  • Evil Mentor: He raised and trained an orphan boy named Koushirou into being his Number Two. Koushirou considers him as his surrogate father and often struggles between his loyalty to the evil man who raised him and his own beliefs.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: Possesses healing powers powerful enough to bring him back from the dead.
  • Immortality Hurts: He can come Back from the Dead after being killed, but being resurrected is actually more painful than dying, which has contributed to his Sanity Slippage. In the anime, he affirms that he considers his power a curse.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: His first death, courtesy of Jubei. He makes sure Saemon is at the receiving end as well.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Manipulated both the Kouga and Iga into continuing to fight their war instead of finding peace.
  • Neck Snap: His second death, done by Gyoubu.
  • Off with His Head!: His fourth and final death.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: According to him, the best and only way to submit a woman, is to rape her. He also firmly believes that raping someone will make them love him and so attempts to "convince" Oboro to turn away from Gennosuke by raping her.
  • Sadist: He really loves making his enemies feel pain. Among other things, he tricks Gyoubu into striking at a child, forcing the boy's father to take a fatal blow solely so the child's pain rattles Gyoubu enough for Tenzen to win, and later ties up Kagerou and tortures her by shooting needles into her bare torso purely For the Evulz.
  • Sanity Slippage: The more the series goes, the less sane he is.
  • Smug Snake: Some of his plans were pretty good and well executed... but his unnecessary sadism and his MASSIVE arrogance are huge drawbacks; he gets himself killed several times over.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Towards Oboro.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Many people would consider immortality quite awesome, though in the anime he affirms that he has lived for so long and has been resurrected so many times that for him, immortality is the worst of curses.
  • Your Head Asplode: That's what happens when Oboro nullifies his Back from the Dead powers.

    Azuki Rousai

Azuki Rousai

Voiced by: Takeshi Aono (Japanese), R. Bruce Elliott (English), Guillermo Martínez (Latin American Spanish)

An old shinobi who can stretch his limbs and neck like boneless tentacles. He's grumpy and easy to anger. Meets his doom in Okoi's arms during an attempt at interrogating her. This makes him the sixth ninja to die.

  • Animal Motifs: His elongated skull and his tentacle-like limbs can make you think of a squid. Ironically, he kinda looks like dried squid after Okoi's done with him.
  • Cool Old Guy: Despite his advanced age, he is shown to be strong enough to smash a stone wall to pieces with a kick.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Okoi manages to hug him and suck all his blood, turning him in a dried up mummy.
  • Death by Irony When he tries to hit Okoi... he gets his blood sucked out.
  • Expressive Hair: His beard gets all spiky and messy when he's yelling or angry.
  • Evil Old Folks: In the mangaka's words, a "choleric old geezer", who still harbors warmongering feelings for Kouga, though he seems to be much more sedated and sympathetic with his comrades.
  • The Grotesque: Almost normal, except for his elongated, creepy skull of his. Even more so when he employs his powers.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Refers to Josuke as a "Boneless Monster"... quite rich, coming from a rubber monster such as himself, which is lampshaded by Josuke himself.
  • Mundane Utility: He and Nenki take advantage of their own gonkiness to try to scare the hiccup away from Oboro.
  • Rubber Man: Can stretch his limbs and neck. Josuke even calls him a "Rubber monster".
  • Would Hit a Girl: When questioning Okoi, he threatens to rip off her limbs and breasts should she refuse to answer.

    Mino Nenki

Mino Nenki

Voiced by: Kenji Utsumi (Japanese), Jim Johnson (English), Ramón Aguilera (Latin American Spanish)

An odd-looking shinobi with very long and messy hair, huge eyebrows and long nose hairs. He can animate and control all the hairs of his body and can use a long staff. Hyouma use his dojutsu on him, causing him to break all his own bones. This makes him the ninth ninja to die.

  • Animal Motifs: It's subtle, but the sheer hairiness of his body, his fondness for wielding a staff, his Prehensile Hair and his fondness for aerial attacks all call to mind an ape.
  • Bifurcated Weapon: His staff can actually become an oversized nunchaku.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Gennosuke and Danjou's are nothing compared to this guy.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: He loves fighting and will always do it with gusto. The one time he completely lose his guts is after witnessing the effects of Gennosuke's powers first hand.
  • Carpet of Virility: Apart from his face, hands and feet, his whole body is covered in a layer of hair so thick and long that Okoi can't get at his skin through it. This foils her efforts to leech his blood, allowing him to kill her by extending his chest hair as dozens of fine needles that pierce straight through her body.
  • Carry a Big Stick: His weapon in the novel is described as a club.
  • Expressive Hair: This, too, and justified, when it comes to his powers...
  • Eye Scream: He gets a handful of salt in the eyes when he tries to attack Saemon in the salt storehouse, which causes him to flail his hair at Hotarubi.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Killed by his own hair under the influence of Hyouma's attack.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's genuinely affectionate to Oboro, and while everyone shuns her away and think she's useless, he only says she's Just a Kid and hopes she'll grow into her role as leaderess.
  • Large Ham: For a ninja, he's surely loud and boisterous...
  • Lecherous Licking: Upon seeing Okoi for the first time.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has a Big "WHAT?!" when he opens the door of the salt storehouse in time to see an half-naked Okoi slicing at him. Also his last expression when Hyoma uses Dojutsu on him.
  • Prehensile Hair: His main weapon. He can animate his hair, as well as his body and nostril hairs, and even make it grow or shrink as he desires, as seen with his moustache.
  • You Don't Look Like You: His movie counterpart looks like a savage man wearing a fur costume and armed with Wolverine Claws.

    Chikuma Koshirou

Chikuma Koshirou

Voiced by: Wataru Hatano (Japanese), John Burgmeier (English), Jesús Nunes (Latin American Spanish)

A skilled warrior and shinobi, he's very protective towards Oboro and possibly in love with her. He obeys the orders of Tenzen, his Evil Mentor, but he's not as evil as him. Can fight with two kama sickles and use his breath to form a deadly Razor Wind attack. Halfway through the series he's blinded by Gennosuke, who sends back his wind at him, but learns how to fight while blind. He's eventually poisoned to death by Kagerou, whom he thought was Akeginu thanks to Saemon mimicking her voice to distract him.

  • Bodyguard Crush: His other most important person, aside of his Evil Mentor and Parental Substitute Tenzen, is Oboro. He crushes on her hard and wants to protect her with his life
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: And he is VERY jealous of Gennosuke. The anime accentuates this.
  • Cool Mask: After losing his sight, he wears a rather spiffy black and red one covering his damaged eyes and the top of his head
  • Disability Superpower: After being blinded he gains a better sense of hearing, allowing him to fight and kill Hyouma as now he's immune to his gaze.
  • Dual Wielding: Sickles. He can even throw them with deadly precision.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He's clearly not okay with the idea of Tenzen forcing himself on a defenseless Oboro. In fact, as this happens, Koshirou is outside the room and clearly forcing himself to not intervene, torn between his loyalty to the one who raised him and his own love for his lady-of-liege.
  • Eye Scream: After Oboro accidentally nullifies his powers and leaves him indefense, Gennosuke's Death Glare forces him to damage his own eyes with his Razor Wind.
  • Handicapped Badass: After he gets blinded. Ironically, he is the one who defeats and kills Hyouma, since he was already blinded when they fought... and Hyouma's doujutsu powers do NOT work on a blind opponent.
  • Hidden Depths: In the anime, he has a soft spot for kids and is an excellent woodcarver.
  • Kiss of Death: Kagerou kills him this way. It says a LOT that this is one of the gentler deaths in the series.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: His loyalty to Tenzen, his Evil Mentor.
  • Razor Wind: How his power works: by whistling he can create a vortex that attracts and shreds his enemies to pieces.
  • Sinister Scythe: Two of them, which he can fold and even throw like boomerangs.

    Amayo Jingorou

Amayo Jingorou

Voiced by: Ken Uo (Japanese), J. Paul Stevens (English), Gary Matos (Latin American Spanish)

A slug man from Iga who can melt his body with salt in order to lay ambushes and move faster. However too much salt reduce him to a pitiful squealing worm. Water can return him to normal. He's deeply afraid of the ocean for obvious reasons. He's killed by Gyoubu who tosses him in the sea, causing him to melt before Akeginu can help him. This makes him the eleventh ninja to die.

  • Animal Motifs: Slugs.
  • Blessed with Suck: His powers allow him to move very fast and be impredictable in a fight, but if he doesn't get enough water or there's too much salt, he'll be left whimpering in pain and terror.
  • Butt-Monkey: He's often victim of comedic injuries, such as having Josuke slamming into him (anime only) or being kicked in the butt and sent flying by Gyoubu.
  • Dirty Coward: Out of all the Iga ninja, he's possibly the least noble and brave.
  • Gonk: The novel describe him as looking like "a drowned corpse covered in blue mold". In the anime, he's wrinkly, patchily bold, slightly green skinned, and covered in liver spots.
  • Groin Attack: Implied when he tried to rape Okoi without knowing that her skin can suck blood on contact. Painfully.
  • Hidden Depths: He seemingly goes along with Akeginu during the course of the story, and viceversa.
  • I'm Melting!: His nightmarish ultimate fate.
  • Least Common Skin Tone: Green.
  • Orifice Invasion: In his slug form, that's how he kills Jousuke.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He's scared shitless of the sea. Justified as, due to the salt in it, his body would melt upon prolonged contact. And that's what happens to him.

    Akeginu

Akeginu

Voiced by: Misa Watanabe (Japanese), Jennifer Seman (English), Maritza Rojas (Latin American Spanish)

Iga kunoichi, she's a beautiful woman who serves as Oboro's maid and actually cares for her plea. She can expel blood from her skin and use it in battle along with daggers and shortswords. She's in love with Koshirou. She's eventually tricked and captured by Saemon, and stabbed in the heart by Kagerou.

  • Action Girl: She is Oboro's bodyguard, is pretty skilled with daggers and is very good at using her powers to deceive the enemy.
  • Bloody Murder: Her powers are a subtler version of this; she can use her blood to create a mist that disorientates her foes, or which can mark them like ink.
  • Break the Cutie: She takes her dear Koshirou's death... badly.
  • Broken Bird: The Iga/Kouga war really gets to her as well, and by the time she's the next one to die she's quite bitter and shattered
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Her fight against Jousuke in the Novel. In the Manga and anime, the fight's against her favor, before Oboro intervenes.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Justified by her powers: she can use her own blood in a fight, so she genuinely needs to remove at least part of her clothes.
  • Ms. Fanservice: A beautiful ninja girl who often bares her massive breasts in combat.
  • Mundane Utility: In the novel, she uses her blood powers to cover herself with "clothes", so Jousuke wouldn't know he had won a bet between them involving her becoming his wife for the night if he could remove her top.
  • Odd Couple: She seemingly goes along pretty well with Jingoro, even desperately trying to save him from melting in the sea.

    Hotarubi

Hotarubi

Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro (Japanese), Colleen Clinkenbeard (English), Mariela Díaz (Latin American Spanish)

Kunoichi from the Iga clan and Yashamaru's lover. She can summon and control insects and snakes to do her bidding. She's only sweet and gentle with Yashamaru, and tends to be violent and rude to anyone else. She's maimed and killed in battle by Saemon. This makes her the tenth ninja to die.

  • Action Girl: One who can fight with daggers and short swords or use her power over animals to make them kill people.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Saemon takes out both of her hands with a single katana strike before stabbing her on the chest. AAAAARGH!.
  • Animal Motifs: Butterflies. Her name means Firefly.
  • Ax-Crazy: Deep down the girl has some issues. For examples, she brutally stabs Shougen multiple times after getting spit in the face, and tells about it to Saemon (disguised as Yashamaru) with the most serene smile ever. She also pulls a dagger on Nenki (in the anime) when he jokes on Yashamaru having found another woman while away, though it's played for laughs.
  • Berserk Button: Don't even joke about Yashamaru cuckolding her. Let alone hurt him in any remote way.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She loves Yashamaru deeply, but is also pretty clingy over him. It's Played for Drama after he dies, but in the flashbacks is Played for Laughs.
  • Death Glare: Her default expression around anyone who's not Yashamaru. Though even he gets one when he jokes about Oboro's cuteness. It's really funny.
  • Friend to All Living Things: She can use her powers to summon butterflies against her enemies, though she also has a pet snake and in the manga she can control many kinds of bugs. In the novel, is stated that she can use her powers on both insects and reptiles.
  • Go Out with a Smile: After Saemon fatally wounds her and then lets her believe he's Yashamaru, Hotarubi smiles weakly and lets herself fall off a cliff.
  • Hand Seals: The only ninja to use them. When she attempts to use them against Saemon, it doesn't go well.
  • Hime Cut: This hairstyle is part of her wiki page on The Other Wiki compares her to "the traditional Japanese beauty".
  • Oh, Crap!: A minor but noteworthy one, she briefly sport an almost Face Fault one when Nenki is blinded and his pillar of hair's about to collapse on her.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Against the Kouga, when she finds out that Yashamaru was murdered.
  • Spot the Imposter: Having bandaged a disguised Saemon's finger after her snake bit him, Hotarubi suddenly realizes who the Nenki before her really is.
  • Suck Out the Poison: From Yashamaru's (actually Saemon) finger after he's bitten by her snake. And she looks adorable...
  • When She Smiles: She looks a lot more sweet and adorable when she's not trying to fry someone with her Death Glare.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: She'd join the fight against the Kouga sooner or later anyway, but them killing her boyfriend made her join in even more heartily. And facing a Combat Pragmatist with similar issues was her perdition.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: During peaceful moments. It's even stated on her wiki page:
Basilisk wiki entry: Hotarubi is reminiscent of the traditional Japanese beauty whereas Oboro is the large-eyed innocent, Okoi the sassy tomboy, and Akeginu and Kagerou (and even Ogen during her youth) representing the concept of the sensual femme-fatale.

Other Characters

     Other characters

  • Tokugawa Ieyasu: The elderly former Shogun, who appears to be suffering from some sort of throat cancer as evidenced by the bulbous growth beneath his chin. Although retired, he still possesses enough influence within the government to revoke the Hattori truce in order to resolve the succession dispute. Historically, Ieyasu is regarded as an effective but extremely heartless ruler: Basilisk maintains this image of him as he clearly views both Kouga and Iga as expendable in the face of ensuring political stability and his family's grip on power, thus forcing them to fight to the death.

  • Hattori Hanzou the First (Masanari): The head of a prominent ninja family from Iga Province who would later become chief of the Shogun's intelligence. In the anime, he helped the people of Tsubagakure escape Nobunaga's attack. The peace treaty between Iga Tsubagakure and Kouga Manjidani was originally implemented by him.

  • Hattori Hanzou the Fourth (Masahiro): The third son of Hattori Hanzo and the current leader of the Shogun's intelligence. Although he dislikes the idea of turning Kouga and Iga loose, his loyalty to Ieyasu compels him to nullify his father's anti-war pact for the sake of avoiding civil war among the other Shogunate retainers. He was among the audience that witnessed the duel between Yashamaru and Shogen at Sunpu Castle and would later witness the duel between Oboro and Gennosuke alongside his adopted son Kyohachiro and Lady Ofuku. Although his demeanor can be considered cold and non-chalant, he was deeply moved by the second duel and enacts a new peace treaty in which the spoils promised to the winner were evenly distributed between both clans. He also recoves the battle scroll from Ieyasu and secures it in a hidden alcove of his Japanese-style Big Fancy House, so that the memory of the 20 chosen ninja would not be completely forgotten.

  • Hattori Kyouhachirou: The nephew and adopted son of Hattori Hanzo the 4th (his birth father was Hattori Hanzo the 2nd). Kyohachiro was charged by Hanzo to monitor the duel between Kouga and Iga and then report the results to him and Lord Ieyasu. His role is greatly expanded in the anime: in the manga he doesn't appear until the fourth volume (when he reports to his father that Lady Ofuku had departed in an attempt to sway victory in the Iga's favor), whereas the TV series has him appearing somewhat earlier and getting along more or less well with Oboro.

  • Nankoubou Tenkai: A Tendai Buddhist monk and political adviser for the Shogunate, he suggested to Ieyasu that since the Tokugawas are a military family, the succession dispute should be settled though some sort of organized duel between ninja instead of valued samurai. As the duel between the Kouga and Iga rages on, Ieyasu sends him into the inner castle to keep the peace between Ofuku and Oeyu. He later returns in Basilisk's sequel series, The Yagyu Ninja Scrolls, where he takes on a more saintly role. He is the twin brother of Ashina Dohaku, who serves as the main villain in the second half of The Yagyu Ninja Scrolls.

  • Yagyuu Munenori: A Kenjutsu instructor of the Yagyū Shinkage-ryū school, of whom the Tokugawa Shogunate was a loyal patron. He was among the audience that witnessed Yashamaru and Kazamachi's duel at Sunpu and follows the war alongside Ieyasu. Because of their barely reined hostility to each other and the awesome power of their techniques, he views the ninjas of Kouga and Iga as being more akin to demons than humans.

  • Ofuku aka Lady Kasuga: The godmother of Takechiyo and leader of the faction supporting his claim to the Shogunate. A cold and heartless woman who murdered her husband's mistress and illegitimate child when they're brought into the household, Ofuku's only redeeming grace is her devotion to her protege Takechiyo whom she considers a surrogate son, at one point even risking her life to save his when the Kunichiyo faction poisoned him., Ofuku attempts to personally intervene despite orders from Ieyasu to the contrary, taking the side of the Iga and forcing Oboro into many problems. After witnessing Oboro's suicide, Ofuku rashly orders her samurai to asassinate Gennosuke, only to witness them die at the hands of his dojutsu. Although Gennosuke decided to spare her life, Ofuku is mentally crushed after the Iga's apparent loss; as punishment for her scheming, Hattori Hanzo decides to keep her in the dark regarding how Gennosuke abdicated victory.

  • Princess Oeyo: The consort of Ieyasu's son, the current Shogun Hitetada. Although she gave birth to both Kunichiyo and Takechiyo, she favors Kunichiyo and leads the faction supporting his claim to the Shogunate. Oeyo is just as heartless and manipulative as Ofuku, her rival from long before the succession dispute, and is suggested in the anime that she or one of her followers poisoned poor Takechiyo's tea.

  • Takechiyo: Ieyasu's eldest surviving grandson, represented by the Iga. His slow witted nature is the basis of the succession dispute. He will grow into Tokugawa Iemitsu.

  • Kunichiyo: Ieyasu's second grandson, represented by the Kouga. Although the younger of the two brothers, Kunichiyo's intelligence and cleverness has caused many within the government to view him as more deserving of the Shogunate over his elder sibling. He will grow into Tokugawa Tadanaga.
