    Kaito "Master" Goshikida/Zenkaizer Black

Portrayed by: Kiita Komagine (live), Masashi Takada (suit)

I was born a hero. I fight as a hero. I will always be a hero.

The owner of the café Donbura, where Haruka works part-time. He provides support for the Donbrothers, while also acting as an administrator to monitor their Kibi-Points. His main goal seems to revolve around collecting all of the Sentai/Avataro Gears from the Hitotsu-Ki.

He is established to be a separate character from the Kaito Goshikida of Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger. For tropes pertaining to the latter, see his folder under the Zenkaigers character page.

Tropes that apply to him in general

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/donbrothers_kaito.png
The True Hero

  • Alternate Self: He is not the same Kaito from Zenkaiger, despite looking like him, although exactly how related he is to his Zenkaiger counterpart is ambiguous.
  • Badass Bookworm: He reads books in his cafe while also kicking ass as Zenkaizer Black.
  • Bookworm: Often seen reading a book in Donbura, no matter the genre. The second episode even has him read the manga Haruka supposedly plagiarised.
  • Change the Uncomfortable Subject: He tends to avoid answering any questions regarding his origins, often always having more important issues on hand to change the topic whenever Haruka demands to know everything about him and his connections to the Donbrothers.
  • Character Catchphrase:
  • Chick Magnet: in #19 he dresses in a bit of an old-fashioned disco style and rides a bike into what would have been his date with Minako, only to be immediately surrounded by girls.
  • The Comically Serious: The silly moments he has are further enhanced by his calm, straight-laced demeanor.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Setchan was a very loyal ally to the Zenkaigers and acted as their strategist, telling them which Sentai Gears to use in battle. Kaito is far more cryptic and only directly helps the Donbrothers when they absolutely need it, prefering to act as their ally from the shadows.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He somehow always has something to aid the Donbrothers with their predicaments, whether it be kibi-dango dough for when Taro gets weak or a wheelchair to help Haruka get around when she lost the ability to walk.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He's dressed in primarily black, but he offers support to the Donbrothers whenever he can. To reinforce this, he gets a Sentai/Avataro Gear regardless of which side takes out a Hitotsu-Ki/Hitotsu-Kings. If one of the Nōto generals does it, the Gear is immediately sent to him. Despite that, it's implied that Kaito wishes for the Donbrothers to defeat the Hitotsu-Kis. When he gets the Lupinranger Gear when Sononi killed Kaitou-Ki, Kaito becomes incredibly unsettled by the development.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Snarks at Haruka whenever she tries to do something ridiculous.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": His name is never actually spoken on-screen, with everyone calling him "master/boss".
  • Gotta Catch Them All: His primary goal seems to be collecting Sentai Gears from defeated Hitotsu-Kings, though how they came to be in this continuity still remains a mystery.
  • Hero of Another Story: His lines that he was born to be a hero and fought as one implies he had his own adventures as Zenkaizer Black prior to getting involved with the Donbrothers, enforced further by how formally Jin greets him in #39. The movie even implies he has his own version of the Zenkaigers he fought alongside, and the fact he refers to himself as an "eternal hero" implies that he did something of repute.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • While mysterious, he makes it a point that the Donbrothers should be heroes, as seen when a majority of them began seeking fame through their Dragon Fires splinter group. Backing this up is how he casually brings up that there had been many Donbrothers before the current group, just that they got fired from that job the moment they started abusing their powers for personal gain.
    • His first onscreen meeting with Jin in episode 39 has the latter pledging allegience to him. This and the fact that he possesses the button to summon Don Killer in case the Donbrothers have to be eliminated hints that he has a much higher authority in the Donbrothers' operation than initially implied.
  • Home Base: His cafe Donbura serves as an impromptu one, much like Colorful was, mainly due to him being there by default as The Bartender. The Donbrothers frequently meetup there to discuss their plans within his earshot while also being able to easily seek his advice or assistance.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: While Jin is the one who chose the other four Donbrothers to aid Taro, because of his current situation (and Lack of Empathy towards anyone who isn't his adopted son, Taro), Kaito is the one who has to help the team out more often than not.
  • It's All About Me: Has a habit of stealing credit from the Donbrothers to validate himself, as seen in #20 and #26.
  • Mission Control: He secretly acts as one for the Donbrothers, being aware of their identities and monitoring the Kibi-Points they earn from their activities.
  • Not So Above It All: He's willing to let his patrons do what they want so long as he allows it. In episode 2, he allows Shinichi to pay with a haiku, commenting that it was a nice one before sending him off. Also, after warning the team against letting stardom go to their heads in #20, he gets a little too into it himself when he accepts a reward on their behalf when they have to run off to fight the Hitotsuki as well as name himself the MVP of the show in #26 before giving some of the Donbrothers his photobooks.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Played for Laughs. #10 sees him get startled at Haruka twice - when she told him that she wanted to go back to her old life and when she demands to be Oni Sister again.
  • The Quiet One: He tends to keep to himself, only speaking when necessary. Even when he does speak, it rarely goes beyond a few words or so.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He tends to keep his distance from Haruka, only really commenting whenever she does something ridiculous. That being said, he's aware of her superheroic exploits, and allows her to venture outside of work because of it.
  • Red Herring: For some time, it was implied — between his mysterious origins, monochrome color scheme, his apparent status as an Identical Stranger to the original Zenkaiser — that Kaito was the true identity of the mysterious Penguin Jūto; furthering this, shots of the Jūto Forest included someone wearing a jacket very similar to the original Kaito's. As it turned out, however, the actual Penguin Jūto was someone else entirely.
  • Riddle for the Ages:
    • Who or what is he, and what relationship does he have to the Kaito of Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger? Though he behaves completely differently, there are multiple aspects tying him back to his Zenkaiger counterpart:
      • When Haruka says "zenryoku zenkai" in episode 2, Kaito responds "never heard of it".
      • Cafe Donbura is identical in exterior and layout to Candy Cafe Colorful from Zenkaiger, and when Haruka lifts up one of the wall menus in episode 9, there's a menu item for the "Colorful Sundae" on the back of it, which Kaito immediately pushes back down. invoked
      • In Avataro Sentai Donbrothers New First Love Hero, the obvious green-screen background to his segment of the New First Love Hero movie depicts a battle with Juran, Gaon, Magine and Vroon.invoked
      • Episode 26 has Kaito describe how he's always been a hero, including footage of Zenkaiser fighting the Tozitend from the first episode of Zenkaiger.
      • In the final episode, Kaito explains that with his job done, Tarou will lose his memories of being part of the Donbrothers; this is accompanied with a shot of Don Momotaro's suit turning stark white and black, similar to Zenkaiser Black... which may imply that something similar happened to him after the end of whatever story he was involved with.
    • All this is repeatedly Played for Laughs and lampshaded; whenever anyone asks about his origins, Kaito changes the subject, and when Sonoza asks who he is (exciting Sonoi, who had identified Kaito as "something special"), Kaito answers that... he's something special.
    • Similarly, it's never explained why he was collecting the Zenkai Gears and Avataro Gears resulting from the Donbrothers' defeats of Hitotsuki.
    • Ultimately, Donbrothers vs. Zenkaiger confirms that he's at least not the exact same individual as his Zenkaiger counterpart, but whether he's an Alternate Self or what exact relationship they have remains unanswered. Although Zenkaiger version Kaito has a moment where he thinks he sees Cafe Donbura in the place Cafe Candy Colorful was, implying it is something somewhat familiar.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: As the admin who grants their wishes, he has this in regards to Rewriting Reality into an Alternate Timeline whenever a Donbrother wishes to quit, in the scenario where they have any additional request to undo their wish, though he would try to feign ignorance when asked.
  • Running Gag: The show constantly teasing (and deflecting from) his backstory - as detailed in the Riddle for the Ages entry.
  • The Stoic: In contrast to his Zenkaiger self, he doesn't really emote.
  • Trickster Mentor: As per his catchphrase, he hardly rejects whatever the Donbrothers request of him, but it's usually due to knowing they will gain An Aesop out of it, such as when he spends Kiji Brother's and Oni Sister's Kibi-Points on various Confidence Building Schemes for them.

    Jin Momoi

Portrayed by: Soko Wada

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/donbrothers_jin.jpg
Taro's Adoptive Father
Taro... he will show the way. With that, you should be able to regain what you have lost.

Taro's adoptive father, who mysteriously hasn't aged a day. Condemned for an unknown crime and locked up in a virtual prison, he is still able to appear as an avatar in various places. He distributes strange sunglasses to four chosen people, requesting them to aid Taro as his companions. Later it is revealed that as a penance for his crimes he acts as the guardian of the seal that keeps the Juto away from both worlds.
  • Adults Are Useless: He's supposedly trying to help Haruka find Taro Momoi in the first three episodes but doesn't even notice, nor seem to realize, that his cryptic talk has nearly killed her twice-over. He's also just as helpful to the other Donbrothers, only humoring their concerns if they involve Taro and declaring "visiting hours are over" if they don't.
  • The Ageless: Somehow hasn't aged a day since raising Taro for unknown reasons.
  • Anti-Mentor: Almost all of Jin's advice is Cryptic Conversation. He knows what he's trying to get across, but he makes no effort to explain what he means to other people and boots them away when they start asking questions, ultimately being of no help at all. Later episodes see him give half-hearted advice, but usually with crucial details left out.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: For some odd reason, he won't give the exact information Haruka needs when she's asked to find Taro Momoi. Instead of giving his picture, his home address or where he works, he just gives her some cryptic clues that nearly end with her dying to the hands of the Nōto. Twice. Subsequent appearances have him give more information that's more clear, but he ends up kicking his patrons out when they ask too many questions.
  • Catchphrase: "Visiting hours are over."
  • Character Tic: Whenever a conversation with him is about to finish, be it by his own choice or not, he would turn away from the person he talks to and pull up his hood.
  • The Chooser of the One: He specifically chose the Donbrothers to help out Taro for some reason, at the cost of each them losing something of great value.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: To Isao Goshikida. While Isao was Kaito's biological father with a very jovial personality, Jin is Taro's adoptive father who is far more stoic by comparison. Also, one of the driving mysteries of the series was what happened to Isao and his wife, while we see where Jin is early on into the series. When we do learn what happened to them, their circumstances are very different. Isao was captured by the Tozitend and turned into a supersoldier against his will, while Jin paid the price for raising Taro by being forced into guarding the Juto's seal against his will. Finally, while Kaito wanted to find his parents throughout the series, Taro has yet to acknowledge Jin's situation, if he even knows what happened at all.
  • Cryptic Conversation: Jin never gives anyone straightforward information. He'll either leave important details out of his "advice" or dismiss his visitors right as they start asking important questions. This nearly gets Haruka killed by the Nōto on multiple occasions.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Unlike most Sentai mentors who are shown to care for the teams they mentor, Jin is very cryptic and couldn't care less about the well-being of any of the Donbrothers. Even with Taro's temporary death in #13, he tells the group that while he did raise him like a son, grieving for him would do nothing and tells them to instead wait for his replacement to come. In addition, while most mentors know a lot about the conflict and do what they can to give their teams proper guidance, Jin is barely informed on goings-on and has a spotty track record with choosing people to wield the Donblasters (having gone through nearly 5000 candidates before it found the right people). Calling Jin a "mentor" at all is rather pushing it given how utterly reliant he is on Kaito's ability to manage; showing he's nowhere near as competent as characters like Commander Aya or Doggie Kruger.
  • Did You Think I Can't Feel?: His lack of reaction to Taro's death makes the Donbrothers think he doesn't care. It's further from the truth. He loved Taro immensely, but doesn't think grieving will change the fact he died.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: On the receiving end of this trope: his crime was revealed to be raising Taro Momoi after the Nōto hunted the Don Clan down for creating the Juto.
  • Enemy Mine: Is advising the Nōto on the Juto, despite leading their opposition.
  • Flat "What": His response to Tsuyoshi wanting to be paid for fighting as Kiji Brother in #25.
  • Food as Bribe: Tsubasa cooks Jin a meal during a visit, which prompts Jin to give out slightly-more information about the Juto than he would otherwise. After he finishes the meal however, it's back to cryptic business as usual.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: As The Chooser of the One responsible for the Donbrothers' powers, it's implied he went through about 5000 candidates before the powers settled on and stayed with the current team, all of whom promptly lost their powers due to selfishly using them for personal gain.
  • Lack of Empathy: Downplayed. While he clearly wants the team to be heroes, he has no interest in any of them other than his son Taro (and debatably Kaito), barely even bothering to humor their concerns and dismissing them at crucial junctures; contributing to the team's overall lack of unity.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Due to him being stuck in prison, Jin is uninformed about many aspects of the ongoing conflict.
  • Mistaken for Profound: Inverted in #47. In one of the few times Jin is ever direct with a statement, he references the fact that the team's designs (particularly Oni Sister) are based on the Momotaro myth to help the Noto and Donbrothers stop bickering and properly unite. However, his reputation for Cryptic Conversation precedes him and Shinichi tells him off for spouting cryptic lines again.
  • Noodle Incident: He committed a crime of some sort and is keeping watch over the Juto's seal as penance. #35 reveals it was raising Taro.
  • Out of Focus: Despite being the team's mentor, he hasn't had very many appearances in the show. His Administrator Kaito manages the team in his stead.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Tells Haruka to go find Taro Momoi, while not bothering to provide her with a picture of Taro, describe what he looks like or even mention that he's a hero called Don Momotaro. This ends up nearly costing Haruka her life when she runs into Sonoi and mistakes him for Taro because while he gives her a location, he fails to mention that Taro would arrive on a vehicle.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Discussed in #47. Jin references the fact that the team's designs are based off the Momotaro myth and that Oni Sister being based on the myth's villain is symbolic of enemies coming together to unite in the hopes of convincing the hesitant Donbrothers to accept the Noto trio into their fold. It's one of the few times that Jin is ever straightforward in a discussion, yet Shinichi just assumes he's spouting cryptic lines and tells him off.
  • Running Both Sides: The Nōto are apparently able to arrange meetings with "The Guardian" despite him having formed the team that's been opposing them. He leaves the Donbrothers out of the conversation entirely and never mentions the meeting to anyone.
  • Single-Issue Wonk: Jin only advises the team when it relates in some form to Taro, engaging in Cryptic Conversation about all other subjects and shooing people away when they get too chatty. According to Sonoi, the power of the Donbrothers was created by the Don Clan specifically for human allies to support Taro when he awakened - explaining why Jin's advice is so hyper-focused around him. The only character he's willing to talk to about non-Taro issues is Kaito, seemingly because he holds high respect for him as a "true hero."
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: Jin's idea of advising Haruka in her quest to find Momoi Taro is to give her a vague off-hand hook and hope she can fill the rest out herself, which almost gets her killed by the Noto ovr the misunderstanding twice. As the show goes on, he becomes slightly better at communicating when the issue's related to Taro - but those with individual concerns will usually just have their inquiry thrown back at them before a prompt dismissal.
  • The Stoic: Like Kaito, he doesn't emote very much.

    Miho Kijino

Portrayed by: Momoko Arata

Tsuyoshi's wife, and an employee at the hair salon Little Morgane. Her kind and demure demeanor belies a dark secret.

    Yuriko Kito

Portrayed by: Hitomi Miwa

Haruka's aunt, who works as a police officer.

    Marina Maeda/Oni Sister (II)

Portrayed by: Hiyori Katada (live), Ayumi Shimozono (suit)

A disgraced ex-photographer who became Oni Sister in an Alternate Timeline made after Haruka quits the team.
  • Action Girl: As Oni Sister, she proves to be a far more effective fighter than Haruka at first.
  • All for Nothing: She tided through a heavy rainstorm just to wait for the perfect photo opportunity when it ends and captured a beautiful rainbow scenery, becoming her signature work, only for this exact work to suddenly be called out for plagiarism against another photographer's similarly-constructed work, causing her to lose her career.
  • Alliterative Name: Marina Maeda.
  • Ambiguous Situation: With the reveal in #43 that "Naoki Shiina" is actually Haruka Kito from another future, it's heavily possible that her plagiarist may also be a future version of herself, but given that Marina disappears after her debut, we never know if this is the same case or not.
  • Berserk Button: The rival photographer's photo that she had been accused of plagiarism for. Upon seeing a copy of it at a restaurant, she takes a knife and stabs at the photo, insisting that she was wrongly accused.
  • Expy: She's basically a throwback to the typical single female Sentai members of old a la Mei, or Rei Tachibana of the mature graceful Lady of War style heroine who's the emotional center of the team gets along with everyone and is the member that usually is able to blend in the best to go shadow targets of the week. All qualities Haruka very much was not at the time.
  • Foil: To Haruka, obviously in several ways although in many others Haruka would turn out to be similar to her just that it too some development to get there. Marina shows strong domestic skills in cooking and cleaning, while Haruka's cooking is questionable and she's too clumsy to clean well. Marina is a grown woman of at least 20 who was a professional photographer while Haruka is a teen high schooler who was an amateur manga author about to go pro. Marina is attractive in the way of a mature woman while Haruka is attractive in a more cute way something both point out about each other. Marina after losing her career to the plagiarism scandal claimed to embrace her new life as a warrior only to deep down still have much trauma from it and a strong desire to photograph again, while Haruka initially was not happy being Oni Sister and was desperate for her old life back only to miss the Donbrothers and find her original life lacking after she temporarily got it back. Marina immediately accepted all the other Donbrothers and was close with all of them, while Haruka initially was turned off by all their quirks at first but eventually warmed up to them. With Taro, Marina was happy to serve him and adored him but in a rather subservient manner, while Haruka acted like that half heartedly at the beginning because she was told to only to quickly get annoyed by Taro's quirks and attitude but then later warmed up to him and began to adore him as well but in a much more personal way. Marina also addresses Taro with extreme respect while Haruka is very casual with him even after they become closer. Finally as Oni Sister Marina was very skilled and a good shot with her Don Blaster right off the bat, but her lingering issues caused her problems long term, while Haruka was initially very clumsy and ineffective only to improve as time went on and she developed significant melee fighting skill.
  • The Heart: Marina shows incredible people skills and does not begrudge her teammates quirks and character flaws. As a result of her positive influence the Donbrothers actually learn of each others' identities much earlier on and became much more unified group of friends with Don Momotaro leading the others into battle without any problems and them showing great teamwork that the regular reality group does not currently possess.
  • Nice Girl: She's an incredibly kind soul that will do anything in her power to help out anybody.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: She flies into a rage after seeing her rival's photo in a restaurant, stabbing the photo and insisting that it was her photo. Haruka and a waitress can only react in shock.
  • Superior Successor: At first she seems to be a significantly better Oni Sister than Haruka was, as her much more accommodating and open personality is implied to have united the Donbrothers into a much better team already (they show very skilled teamwork the regular version thus far lacks) and is able to get along much better with Taro because she acts deferential to him (and means it, rather than Haruka doing it because she was told to) instead of getting annoyed with his antics so he doesn't randomly attack her. It's later showed this isn't the case as Haruka, for all her character flaws, was able to take her life falling apart in stride with only minor grumbling (and the swap shows Haruka she might not necessarily have been as happy with that life playing out as she thought) while Marina has PTSD for anything reminding her of cameras and flies into a rage when reminded of the scandal.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: While her role as the second Oni Sister was short and retconned, having her as a positive influence on Donbrothers' team dynamic gives Haruka the motivation to be a better team player and accepts her role as Oni Sister.
  • Superpowers For A Day: Her time shown as Oni Sister was short-lived as Haruka takes back her position after having felt guilty for pushing her role and Trauma Conga Line to her.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Her Trauma Conga Line mirrors Haruka's, being similarly accused of plagiarism which caused her to lose her career, though in her context it is for photography. The major difference is how they were able to handle the fallout, as Marina took it significantly worse and developed psychological issues from the scandal that Haruka did not.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Anything related to photography in general, as she was never able to overcome her PTSD. Any moment of aiming an object like a camera causes her hands to tremble, which severely impedes her ability to aim with the Donblaster in battle.

    Shinichi Saruhara/Saru Brother (Future)

Portrayed by: Yuuki Beppu (live), Masato Tsutamune (suit)

A version of Shinichi hailing from the same alternate future as Future!Haruka.

  • Arch-Enemy: His world's Sonoza is implied to be a much-crueler editor to his timeline's Haruka, which is enough to send Future!Shinichi into a blind rage upon contact with his prime counterpart.
  • Bad Future: Downplayed. While his timeline doesn't appear to be suffering from any major crisis, it's made clear that his world's version of the Donbrothers are practically enemies and their relationship with Sonoza is rockier.
  • Cleans Up Nicely: He looks like a proper gentleman compared to the vagrant look of his prime self.
  • Future Me Scares Me: His proper integration into working society and prioritizing Tanka poetry over Haiku disgusts the prime Shinichi when they first meet, putting them at-odds immediately. They warm up to each other quickly however when they fight Sonoza, parting on a gentle note.
  • Happily Married: To his timeline's Haruka.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He's the one that directly confronts the prime Taro about his lack of emotional maturity, seeing him as somebody without the ability to dream; and thus unhappy. Taro's actually taken aback by the criticism, but ultimately disregards it.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Subverted. Haruka and Shinichi have spent the show as Those Two Guys, but they don't get hitched. Their alternate selves have.
  • Secret-Keeper: He chooses to keep Tsuyoshi in the dark about the fate of his timeline's Miho to avoid ruffling feathers. Understandable, given what happens to her in this one.
  • Self-Made Man: What separates him from his counterpart. He's embraced the world around him, which has made him lavishly rich, more humble and tech-savvy. Despite this, he remains an active Donbrother.
