The Nibelungs

    In General

Arcana: 0. The Fool

A group of Persona users comprised of a recently recruited professor and students (and a little girl) affiliated with Garreg Mach Monastery. The party is originally founded to investigate and put an end to the Draugr Plague that has been infecting Fódlan for years, after the original party members learn from Sothis that the Plague originates from the Shadows in Yggdrasil being sent into the real world.

  • Magic Enhancement: The Nibelungs all get a boost in their physical and magical abilities after awakening their Personas.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Unlike the original Persona series, Byleth at least is capable of summoning Freydis in the real world. It remains to be seen if Claude, Dimitri, or Edelgard can do the same thing.

Founding Members

    Byleth

Byleth Eisner

Nationality: Unknown

House: Black Eagles

Crest: Flames (Major)

Arcana: 0. The Fool

Persona: Freydis

Weapons: Swords and single-shot pistols

The Ashen Demon

Freydis: "I am thou, thou art I. I am one who inherited the warrior spirit of the Red explorer, Freydis! My child, if thou desires it, then I will lend thee mine power and take you to the farthest reaches of the world, no matter how many must be slain on the way!"

The main protagonist of the story. She is a member of her father's mercenary group, encountering the student house leaders from the Garreg Mach Monastery during a bandit attack in Remire village. In one twist of fate, she and the trio stumbles into Yggdrasil, a world different from Fódlan. After learning about the Shadows in that world and their connection to the Draugr Plague, she and the three house leaders form a team to find a way to stop the plague.

Her Persona is Freydis, which is based on Freydís Eiríksdóttir from the stories of the Greenland Saga and the Saga of Erik the Red. A woman born to the latter titular character who was associated to the Norse exploration of North America and finding of Vinland, she was often interpreted as masculine and strong-willed who would defy the odds of her society. She represents the Fool Arcana.
  • Adaptational Badass: Naturally, on account of being a Persona user. Beyond that, she is able to use magic in tandem with her sword skills at the very beginning of the story, something impossible to do in the game.
    • In a specific example, she is able to protect Edelgard from Kostas without needing to use a Divine Pulse.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: She is slightly more knowledgable about society than in the game, with the second chapter showing that she has a basic understanding of the Church and the political structure of the Adrestian Empire, the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, and the Leicester Alliance.
    • Zig zagged in regards to her Crest. On the one hand, she's been aware of the Healing Factor of her Crest since some point prior to the beginning of the story, something the game gave no indication of, but on the other hand, she never thought that her power was thanks to a Crest, despite it being clearly abnormal. Claude even points out that she should have been able to figure it out on her own.
  • Big Eater: She is always either eating a lot of food or thinking about food. She doesn't even agree to becoming a professor until Rhea mentions that she'll have unlimited access to the kitchen.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Byleth is a Literal-Minded Big Eater with no social skills, but also an infamous mercenary known as the Ashen Demon.
  • The Comically Serious: She takes everything at face value and responds to them with complete and utter seriousness. In one example, when she and the house leaders fall into Yggdrasil, after hearing that Claude's butt "has a crack in it", she orders him to take off his pants to heal him.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: When she gets in a mood, according to Jeralt.
Jeralt: The last time your sword broke, you ate raw chicken and waffles covered in soy sauce; last year, when I took back the mead you tried to hide from me, you started eating bacon-wrapped celery and oysters with a side of goat milk; six years ago, I spend one day in the Alliance by myself and come back to find you covered pasta sauce, chocolate ice cream, and fried peaches. Don't even get me started on the Grilled Byleth—
Byleth: It wasn't one day, and all of those were good ideas, conceptually.
    Jeralt: For whom?
  • Did You Think I Can't Feel?: Implied in the second chapter - when some of the other people in Jeralt's Mercenaries start talking about her when she's in earshot, she unintentionally mutilates a draugr corpse with a shovel.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: The glasses accessory is a permanent part of her wardrobe, implying she has some kind of vision problems.
  • Emotionless Girl: She's extremely Literal-Minded, stoic, and almost never reacts or emotes to anything. Her tendency to default to cold logic and seeming lack of empathy gives her the moniker "Ashen Demon", but hearing the other members of Jeralt's mercenary troupe talking about her that way causes her to violently hack a draugr's corpse to pieces. Although she tries to insist that she's alright, Jeralt sees right through her, but doesn't press her on it.
  • Expy: Personality-wise, she is one for Makoto Yuki, even having "personal space" for a Catchphrase.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Judging by her dreams, she seems to have met the three house leaders when they were children. She doesn't make the connection due to Edelgard's different hair color in the present, however.
  • Healing Factor: Her Crest of Flames gives her one, though she was apparently ignorant to the fact that it was a Crest power before the story.
  • Light 'em Up: Freydis specializes in Bless skills.
  • Literal-Minded: She takes people more or less completely literally when she's talking to them. It contributes to her being The Comically Serious.
Lysithea: A knight flew into the monastery on pegasus saying that Edelgard had her life saved by a mercenary woman, so I came into town hoping to find her and see what kind of person she was. As it turns out, she's nothing but a nut.
Byleth: Peanut or cashew?
Lysithea: Why does that matter?
Byleth: Like one more than the other.
Lysithea: Edelgard, I sincerely worry for your safety around her.
  • Mistaken Identity: She initially confuses Lysithea for Edelgard after being shrunk due to the effects of Yggdrasil. Lysithea is not amused.
  • No Social Skills: She is, to put it lightly, lacking in the ability to interact with people off the battlefield. Since she was raised as a mercenary her entire life before meeting the house leaders, she has little to no social interaction with other people other than her father. Her answers are always short and to the point, she also clearly doesn’t have any tact during conversations so people are often baffled by her responses.
  • Not So Stoic: In Chapter 1, while she doesn't react verbally, she unintentionally dismembers a Draugr's corpse when she overhears some of the other mercenaries discussing her Emotionless Girl personality.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: She has a near-total inability to realize that people are joking.
  • Ship Tease: Byleth and Edelgard get a lot of it.
    • Apparently in a dream when they are little, Edelgard grabs Byleth's hand when they heard footsteps from outside a wooden building.
    • During the ride towards Garreg Mach Monastery, Edelgard draped her uniform's red cape over Byleth when the latter was sleeping.
  • Straight Man: To Sothis's Plucky Comic Relief.
  • Terse Talker: She tends to speak in short, brief sentences only and when necessary, imitating the tendency for Persona protagonists to be Heroic Mimes.

    Edelgard

Edelgard von Hresvelg

Nationality: Adrestian Empire

House: Black Eagles

Crest: Seiros (Minor), Flames (Major)

Arcana: 0. The Jester

Persona: Brynhildr

Weapons: Axes and anti-tank rifles

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/artwork_edelgard.png

Edelgard: "This woman can so easily put her life on the line again and again like this, yet I lose my resolve at the sight of a mere rodent. How pathetic. It's truly pathetic, but no more! I can't afford to die now, not until my dreams are realized, but if I allow myself to be so weak that a rat can break me, then those dreams were never worth having, and that's the farthest from the truth!"

The Adrestian Empire’s princess, the heir to the throne and also the house leader of the Black Eagles. She is a dignified, high-minded young woman who is always evaluating everything around her and her surroundings before taking action.

Her Persona is Brynhildr, a valkyrie from the ''Völsunga Saga'', who was stripped from her powers due to disobeying Odin. She was set into a deep slumber on a castle on top of a mountain surrounded by a magic fire, and can only be awakened by a brave man with a kiss, which she was by Sigurd, the dragon slayer. However, she was later deceived into marrying King Gunnar, so in return she orchestrated Sigurd’s death.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: She and Lysithea are childhood friends in this story.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Edelgard gets a lot of Ship Tease with Byleth, but since she's canonically bisexual, it's currently unclear what her orientation will be in this story.
  • Badass Adorable: She is a beautiful young woman who is also a powerful fighter and also sports quite the dorky side.
  • Badass Cape: In her academy uniform, she wears an asymmetrical, red cape.
  • BFG: She holds the largest firearm compared to the other initial party members, being an anti-tank rifle. It’s so large that it must be fired by jamming it hard into the dirt.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She shows this towards Lysithea, also backed up by the fact of being her childhood friend.
  • Cat Folk: Her Persona resembles one.
  • Closet Geek: She was up all night thinking about and writing team names that should be used by the party in Yggdrasil, some of them are even parodies and shout-outs to the names of various teams from the Persona series:
Edelgard: This is what I have: the Persona Strike Force; the Masked Circle; the New World Order; the Specialized Nobility Execution Squad, or 'S.N.E.S.' for short; the Investigation Team; the Phantom Strikers; the Shadow Knights; the Garreg Mach Four; Byleth Eisner and the Garreg Mach Three—
    Dimitri: You can’t be serious.
Edelgard: Okay, what about the Garreg Mach Two?
Sothis: Hey, isn't the math wrong on all of those? I'm not included in the tally!
Edelgard: Hm? Oh. I guess I forgot to include you because you don't have a Persona.
Sothis: You didn't have one when you came up with these!
Byleth: Do you have an idea?
    Edelgard: Are-Are mine no good?
  • Combat Stilettos: She wears stiletto heels in combat.
  • Dare to Be Badass: She gives herself the courage to stand up over her crippling fear of rats, as she also refuses to die until her dreams become a reality, yelling the quote above.
  • Disease Bleach: Her white hair is a result of Crest experimentation. Byleth's dream reveals she was originally a light brunette, but Byleth herself didn’t make the connection.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Defied - when Byleth started to get undressed to try swimming across a river, Edelgard responds by sticking her head in the water.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wore her hair this way shown in Byleth’s dream when she was little.
  • Implied Love Interest: Out-of-Universe, she's implied to be this for Byleth.
  • Lady of War: While she fights gracefully and carries an air of dignity, she also uses axes as her weapon of choice, and gets an anti-tank rifle as her gun when she first summons her Persona.
  • The Leader: She is the house leader of the Black Eagles at the Officers Academy, and thus has authority over all other members in the house as they originate from her empire, which she will eventually rule. However, it's defied in Yggdrasil, where leadership of the Nibelungs ultimately falls to Byleth.
  • Mystical White Hair: Her hair is an unusual pearly white and she's unusually strong for her size.
  • Mythology Gag: Her Confidant caps at rank 5 instead of 10, similar to Kasumi Yoshizawa's Confidant, meaning that there's more to her than meets the eye.
  • Not So Above It All: After the first trip to Yggdrasil, she stayed up all night coming up with party names for the group.
  • Not So Stoic: She's usually cold and serious, but she has her moments where her "cool and serious" facade breaks.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: She stands at 158cm (about 5'2"). This doesn't stop her from wielding weapons like axes with just one hand or firing an anti-tank rifle naturally.
  • Playing with Fire: Brynhildr uses the Agi (fire) line of spells.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: "Strike them down, Brynhildr!"
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: "Ravage them!”
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: She's the Adrestian Empire's emperor-to-be and by far the strongest fighter in the Black Eagles.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: She doesn't like Sothis that much, but besides Sothis occasionally sticking her tongue out at her, the dislike seems to be mostly one-sided on Edelgard's part.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: As in canon, she has a phobia of rats - when the Nibelungs first run into the Tesso shadows (who take the form of giant rats), she runs away until she gets her Persona. After Awakening, she still hates them, but is able to fight them (albeit with exceptional brutality).

    Dimitri

Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd

Nationality: Holy Kingdom of Faerghus

House: Blue Lions

Crest: Blaiddyd (Minor)

Arcana: 8. Adjustment

Persona: Gunnar

Weapons: Lances and shotguns

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/artwork_dimitri_9.png

Dimitri: "I rushed into things and got us all in trouble, sure, but my feelings haven't changed—no, they have, but it's more as if they've been refined. I want to destroy this man and his ilk, that hasn't changed, but above all else, I refuse to keep watching people die while being powerless to stop it!"

The crown prince of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and the house leader of the Blue Lions. He is a pleasant young man who embodies chivalry, but underneath the warm facade lies a heartbroken past and hidden anger waiting to be unleashed at certain moments.

His Persona is Gunnar, the alternative Old Norse name for Gunther, the King of Burgundy from the 5th century. According to history, he was slain by the Roman general Flavius Aetius, who the following year, with the help of Hunnish mercenaries, destroyed his kingdom. The historical death of Gunnar would be linked to other legends, the most notable was with Siegfried/Sigurd and Brunhild/Brynhildr, and was implicated in the murder of the former.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection: Here, the Tragedy of Duscur was caused by the Draugr Plague, which is explicitly connected to the Shadows in Yggdrasil.
  • Animal Motifs: Aside from his house's lion motif, Felix calls Dimitri a boar for the wild and violent Blood Knight side of his personality. Appropriately, both animals are featured in his Persona’s design, where Gunnar wears a boar's head over his own head and a blue lion’s mane tied to his waist.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: In chapter 6, after the Nibelungs suffer a Curb Stomp Cushion at the hands of two particularly powerful Shadows, even after learning from Sothis that she can't use the Divine Pulse any further, he tries to go back to face them again before he's talked out of it.
  • The Big Guy: His role in the initial party, as his skills has a significant inclination towards physical skills over magic.
  • Closet Geek: While he's not as much of one as Edelgard, the two of them speak about "Featherman" almost in synchronization in Chapter 6.
  • The Comically Serious: He behaves incredibly seriously, although he's not as literal as Byleth.
  • Dare to Be Badass: He breaks off from Pallordo pinning him down by throwing the bandit off of his head, declaring his quote above.
  • First-Name Basis: He thinks that considering what the group has been through, he keeps addressing Byleth with her actual name instead of the more formal Professor.
  • Full-Boar Action: His Persona wears a boar head over its own head.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He is blond and one of the most chivalrous, idealistic, and kind members of the cast.
  • The Leader: The prince who was born to reign over Faerghus, he has authority over leaders of the Blue Lions who are subjects of his kingdom themselves. Despite his royal history and authority, in Yggdrasil he leaves the leadership role of the Nibelungs to Byleth.
  • Making a Splash: Gunnar is capable of using the Aqua (water) line of spells.
  • Mask of Sanity: He does his best to uphold the image of an idealistic and chivalrous knight, but underneath he's a festering mess of rage, hatred, and vengeance.
  • Nice Guy: He is friendly, thoughtful, and polite as a youth, although he has a dark side lurking beneath.
  • Not So Above It All: He is actually on Claude’s side where it’s not a big deal to litter in Yggdrasil.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner:
    • "End this battle, Gunnar!"
  • Revenge Before Reason: When Sothis explains that Shadows are the cause of the Draugr Plauge which also causes the Tragedy of Duscur but under the orders of someone, Dimitri becomes enraged and starts to punch a tree over and over ranting on how the culprit would do something so sadistic. With his mind not in the right place, he begins to blame the others for not having strong reactions from this. He accuses Edelgard for not knowing the meaning of suffering, Byleth for being too passive and thinking that she doesn’t care, and Claude for being a little too indifferent to his feelings even though the two barely even know each other. With this he storms off to find and kill the culprit, but since he hasn’t awakened to his Persona yet, even with the power from his Crest he is easily pinned down by Pallordo.
    • In Chapter 6, after the Nibelungs are badly beaten by two Shadows, he tries to go back to fight them (with the implication being that he's trying to stop their masters from creating more Draugr), despite the Nibelungs all being exhausted, before Claude talks him out of it.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: He's a prince, but he's more than happy to fight on the front lines.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: His gun type of choice, more specifically the double-barrel type.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: The Straight Man to Claude’s Wise Guy.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: His reaction to finding out that the Shadows in Yggdrasil are causing the Draugr Plague - and more importantly, that someone is deliberately releasing the Shadows into the real world to cause it.

    Claude

Claude von Riegan

Nationality: Leicester Alliance

House: Golden Deer

Crest: Riegan (Minor)

Arcana: 1. The Magus

Persona: Örvar-Oddr

Weapons: Bows and carbines

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/artwork_claude_8.png

Claude: "I've had to do a lot of running to get to where I am today, so I'm used to it by now. But just because I'm used to it doesn't mean that I like it. So telling me to run while someone else takes all the hits I didn't have it in me to take? Like hell I can justify that!"

The future sovereign duke of the Leicester Alliance and the house leader of the Golden Deer. Highly sociable and often pulls a smile, he is a keen young man who carefully considers every situation he is in and always planning schemes in mind to solve any obstacles crossing his way.

His Persona is Örvar-Oddr, a legendary hero from the ''Saga of Arrow-Odd'' written in 13th century Iceland. He killed his own horse Faxi in order to reverse the prophecy given to him, buried it deep in the earth and left his home, never returning again. After a life full of fighting and pillaging, he walked across Faxi's grave when he became homesick, mocking the old prophecy but tripped over a horse's skull from which a snake had appeared, biting and killing him.
  • The Ace: He's charming, fiercely strong, resourceful and a brilliant tactician in battle.
  • Adaptation Deviation: Örvar-Oddr uses Force skills, and while those are typically interchangeable with Wind skills, this story depicts them as golden light.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Claude is quite laid back and easy, but he is also a powerful archer and a competent leader in his own right, but on a few occasions he can get really pissed off, one example is during his Persona awakening.
  • Chekhov's Gun: He comes prepared during the Nibelungs' second visit to Yggdrasil (see Crazy-Prepared below). It turns out that the smoke bombs he had comes in handy for the group to escape from two Shadows that are too strong for them to defeat at the moment.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Downplayed, but justified since he and the rest of the house leaders haven’t awakened to their Personas when they decide to visit Yggdrasil for the second time with Byleth and Sothis, which includes a quiver full of arrows, rope, vulneraries, smoke bombs and other “surprises”. Dimitri wisely decided not to ask to elaborate about the last part further.
  • Dare to Be Badass: He exclaims the quote above, stating that he won’t run away when in danger while the others fight and take the blows. He breaks out of the ice encasing him with a rock and immediately shoots an arrow that pierces through a horse man Shadow’s arm.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's easily the snarkiest of the Lords.
  • First-Name Basis: He agrees with Dimitri that considering getting thrown into another world means that the group can be on first-name basis with each other.
  • Guile Hero: He always has a trick up his sleeve, but he's one of the good guys.
  • Horse Archer: Not himself, but his Persona Örvar-Oddr who rides a horse with a skeletal head.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: His specialty is archery, so good aim is to be expected.
  • The Kirk: Of the main three lords, he shares the level-headedness of Edelgard and holds the belief of strong camaraderie like Dimitri, using pragmatism and tricks to protect his comrades and avoid unnecessary casualties in battle.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: In chapter 6, after the Nibelungs are brutally defeated by a particularly powerful pair of Shadows, he throws a pair of smoke bombs down and runs, followed by everyone else. As he puts it afterwards:
"Look, here's how I'm looking at this whole thing. We got our asses handed to us, and if we run on back there, it's just going to happen again, so taking that into account, along with how we're all probably feeling a little tired right now, we should call it a day and try to strategize tomorrow. I get that you want to get this done as fast as possible, but these guys have been at this for decades, right? Waiting one more day to save the world or whatever won't make a difference."
  • The Leader: Leads the Golden Deer house, which is composed of members of the Leicester Alliance, which he will one day take charge of. He still leaves the leadership of the Nibelungs to Byleth.
  • Light 'em Up: How his Force skills are depicted.
  • Lovable Rogue: He’s charming, easygoing, though somewhat mischievous and manipulative.
  • Mellow Fellow: The charming and easy-going lord that tries to lay back and take it easy, and hides his scheming nature.
  • Must Make Her Laugh: In Byleth’s dream, he tries to make both Byleth and Edelgard laugh, to the former’s cluelessness and the latter’s struggle to keep a serious face, only for Byleth to break the young brunette’s composure by poking her cheek.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner:
    • “Let’s dance, Örvar-Oddr!”
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: His reaction to Sothis’ explanation that the Draugr Plague is born from the "men in black" in Yggdrasil sending Shadows into the real world.

    Sothis

Sothis

Nationality: Unknown

Crest: Crest of Flames (Major)

Persona: N/A

Weapons: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/artwork_sothis_0.png

Sothis: "I am one who can bend the fabric of time to my whim… to a certain extent, anyway."

A mysterious girl who appears in Byleth’s dreams. She is a denizen of Yggdrasil who's lost most of her memories but seems to remember her home Alfhiem, as well as Shadows and Personas. She also has access to the Divine Pulse, an ability that lets her reverse time. When she materializes in Fódlan, she is Invisible to Normals, and can only be perceived by people who have visited Yggdrasil. She's the one who has the idea to name the group "Nibelungs".
  • Adaptational Personality Change: Sothis is still largely as serious as she is in the game, but she's more prone to being comic relief here and is also slightly perverted.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Sothis' Divine Pulse is depicted as having a time delay between uses as opposed to the game, where a player could spam it at their leisure until they ran out.
  • Amnesiac Hero: She's lost all of her memories of herself, including her own name. All she remembers is the basic knowledge about her world and some knowledge about Shadows and Personas, which she regains bits and pieces over the course of the story.
  • Badass Adorable: She's just a little girl... that is, a little girl who has the ability to reverse time and is the main source of exposition for the Nibelungs.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Downplayed. Sothis has a penchant for condescension and sarcasm, but she does care for Byleth, and later the other Nibelungs.
  • Brutal Honesty: During the first time appearing in Fódlan, she is surprised that the three house leaders can perceive her, and admits bluntly she's relieved that there are people other than Byleth who she can communicate with normally. Especially since they (unlike Byleth) know how to have a normal conversation.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: She pushes Byleth to go to the sauna, and is frustrated to discover that everyone in the place wears clothes, saying that musculature of men and curvature of women should be enjoyed, by baring it all - or at least wearing a towel.
    • In Chapter 5, when Byleth starts stripping to swim across a river, she promptly covers her up again when she sees that her doing so is making Dimitri and Edelgard uncomfortable.
  • Composite Character: Sothis' depiction combines her canon depiction with that of Teddie and Morgana, as both the source of the Divine Pulses, and her position as the Nibelungs' guide to Yggdrasil.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Everyone in the Nibelungs' calls her "little girl" or some variant of it since Sothis, as of Chapter 5, has yet to remember her name.
  • Ghostly Glide: She can "fly" in the physical world, since she doesn't have a body.
  • Immortality Bisexuality: She's definitely not human, and she seems to find both men and women attractive, judging by her Chivalrous Pervert moments.
  • Invisible to Normals: She can’t be seen or heard by anyone unless they have gone into Yggdrasil.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sothis is very sharp-tongued, and much of her early dialogue is belittling Byleth and as time goes on, Edelgard. But she clearly cares for the group's safety in Yggdrasil.
  • Little Miss Snarker: This little girl is quite sharp-tongued.
  • Mascot: In a way, she’s this for the Nibelungs.
  • Mascot with Attitude: She has a smart mouth and enjoys belittling the rest of the team, especially Byleth.
  • Mentor Mascot: Sothis gives info on Persona lore and Yggdrasil to the rest of the group, as well as a guide to Byleth on what to do in the monastery, such as teaching students.
  • Ms. Exposition: She provides most of the information to the party members about Shadows and Personas. And due to her amnesia, she doesn't even remember most of what she's saying until it slips out.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: She's the sole non-human member of the Nibelungs.
  • Older Than They Look: Implied; she refers to the three lords as "kids" in Chapter 4.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: She's only referred to as "little girl" as of Chapter 5, since she can't remember her name yet.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: While she's got a personality that is more serious than most examples of this trope, a lot of the humor in the story comes from her.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: In the game Sothis can only communicate with Byleth through telepathy and as a spirit in Byleth's dorm room. During New Game Plus gameplay, Sothis Shield can only be activated during Byleth's turn in which Sothis herself casts it, making her technically Byleth's unseen party member. In this story Sothis can talk with other people besides Byleth on both Yggdrasil and Fodlan as long as they have been into the former place, otherwise she is invisible to most people on Fodlan. Case in point, members of the Nibelungs are the only ones who can communicate with her.
  • Time Master: She can turn back time when she wants to, but there's a time delay between uses.
  • Tsundere: She constantly scolds and berates Byleth, and often laughs at or gets frustrated by her stoic and blunt dialogues, but she cares about her.

Recruited Members

    Hubert

Hubert von Vestra

Nationality: Adrestian Empire

House: Black Eagles

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/feth_hubert_portrait.png

The strategist of the Black Eagles who is also Edelgard's retainer ever since his youth. Beneath his calculating and sinister outlook belies an astute and reasonable person who will do whatever it takes to protect Edelgard and eliminate any of her obstacles. He is the first of Garreg Mach's student body to be recruited to the Nibelung cause.

  • Casting a Shadow: He's one of very few students who learns Dark Magic.
  • Undying Loyalty: He's staunchly loyal to Edelgard, and will not abandon her under any circumstances. When he officially joins the party after Edelgard explained everything they are doing, he states that he will follow her anywhere, even into the depths of hell.

    Bernadetta

Bernadetta von Varley

Nationality: Adrestian Empire

House: Black Eagles

Crest: Indech (Minor)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/feth_bernadetta.png

The reclusive heir of House Varley, Bernadetta is an extremely shy girl who is prone to apologize and often founds solace in staying in her dorm room, where she would rather hide and avoid lectures to engage in her hobbies.

Garreg Mach Monastery

    Rhea

Rhea

Nationality: Nabatean

House: Church of Seiros

Crest: Seiros (Major)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fe3h_rhea_artwork.png

The Archbishop of the Church of Seiros, who has a long history among the people of Fodlan.

  • Irony: She says that a Persona is a sign from the divine - ironic, considering that almost anyone can have one in the main series, given the right circumstances (and a willingness from said person to accept and understand themselves).
  • The Mentor: Part of the reason she asks Byleth to join the Monastary here is because she has, in her opinion, a duty to observe her growth.
  • Tears of Joy: She cries them when she sees that Byleth has a Persona, as she sees them as a divine power.

    Seteth

Seteth

Nationality: Nabatean

House: Church of Seiros

Crest: Cichol (Major)

Weapons: Spears/Lances

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fe3h_seteth_artwork.png

A high-ranking member of the Church, who has Rhea's ear consistently.

  • Only Sane Man: He tries to be this, pointing out to Rhea that just because Byleth has a Persona doesn't mean she's qualified to be a teacher.

A member of the Golden Deer House and Leicester Alliance, whose mastery of Reason magic is almost unrivaled within the Monastery's student body.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Chapter three introduces Lysithea about a day before she chronologically appears in the game.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Lysithea is a Childhood Friend of Edelgard in this story.
    • Lysithea is neutral at worst to Byleth pre-timeskip, but she very much dislikes her here thanks to Byleth doing various things to annoy her.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: She gives off this impression when meeting Byleth for the first time onwards.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Lysithea would apparently rather eat a salad than have Byleth as her teacher, likely a Mythology Gag to salad being a food that Lysithea dislikes in the game.
  • The Napoleon: Gets irritated whenever Byleth calls attention to her being short.
