Heroes

    Denizens of Sky Palace

God / The Master / The Lord of Light

The creator of the world and all life therein. Guides and directs the people in rebuilding the world and provides assistance by answering their prayers, sending miracles, and manifesting himself in human form to defeat the champions of Tanzra in preparation for their climactic battle.

  • Adaptational Curves: In the original ActRaiser, the Master's avatar in the side-scrolling segments was clearly masculine but otherwise had little defining features beside his armor. In Renaissance, the avatar has been remade into a Pretty Boy.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: In the original, the Master gets a free Sword Beam powerup in the final battle, an item normally found only once before in the game. It emits an energy wave with every swing of the sword, and doubles attack power to boot.
  • Gods Need Prayer Badly: To a degree. The Master can survive by himself and use his abilities without the faith of his subjects, but he needs their faith to directly go down to the world with his avatar. This means the amount of loyal subjects you have translates directly into how beefy your avatar is during the side-scrolling portions.
  • God Is Good: The Master is a benevolent deity who protects his subjects from demons and helps human civilizations in their development.
  • Good Is Not Nice: The Master is still perfectly capable of sending a Bolt of Divine Retribution down on his followers' heads if they go astray, or conduct urban renewal with an earthquake, which kills all worshippers not in the highest level of housing. This is, in fact, necessary to reach the maximum level. The Angel Lampshades this early on in Renaissance. And unless someone can vouch for one, he shows absolutely no mercy to monsters.
  • Heal Thyself: Renaissance, roughly halfway through the game, gives you a spell that lets you self-heal a percentage of your health on command, provided you have the (considerable) MP to do so.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: In ActRaiser 2 he trades his two-handed broadsword for a one-handed short sword and shield combination. The shield can protect him against most projectiles.
  • Physical God: After he animates his statue.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Actions the player might do aside, The Master is a kind being who leads his followers to victory. He is also nice to those who aren't even of his faith, and at Taia's request, makes an earnest attempt to help Frost, doomed as the attempt may be.
  • Silent Snarker: Some of the Angel's comments imply the Master can be this, especially when the Angel steals apples behind his back or speaks down towards the Master's followers.

The Angel

The Master's right hand and spokesperson. He directs the people of each settlement on where to build and which monster lairs to seal. He also wields a bow and arrow to fight off demons that the villagers are incapable of destroying themselves.

  • Adaptational Curves: In the original, the angel was a nude cherub. In Renaissance, the angel is now an androgynous human child with angel wings and a halo.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: The Angel in Renaissance is given an actual personality unlike the original. In the remake, while they care for the humans that the Lord of Light is helping to guide, they initially perceive humans as weak and helpless without the guidance of their god and is loyal to the Master to a fault, getting irrationally upset at humans who deny the Master's existence or don't follow His teachings.
  • Adaptational Modesty: The Angel wears clothes in Renaissance, unlike in the original where they were permanently nude.
  • Ambiguous Gender: With their younger looking appearance and non-indicative clothing, it is impossible to tell whether the angel is male or female. Characters who directly address the angel will use male pronouns when referring to them, but the angel never directly confirms their true sex if they even have one.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: In the original game, the angel is buck naked, but no visible features are shown. Averted in Renaissance, which gives them clothes.
  • Big Eater: In Renaissance, he's always quite happy to partake of more than his share of food offerings.
  • Catchphrase: "May luck be with you," in the original prior to entering an action stage.
  • Character Development: In Renaissance he steadily gains respect for humanity as he sees the lengths they will go to help each other, fight monsters, and their faith in the Master.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: His attitude when it comes to missions that involve defeating an influx of monsters that he's capable of shooting down with his arrows after all monster lairs are sealed in a region.
  • Sacred Bow and Arrows: The angel uses this to fend off monsters in the sim sections.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: The Angel's favorite food in Renaissance is apples, and it heals their health. They even sneak some behind the Master's back in a Fillmore sidequest.

    The Six Heroes
New characters introduced in Renaissance who aid the six respective communities in fighting off settlement raids and eventually grow to become their respective Champions.

Philotas

A man found by the citizens of Fillmore who claims to have once been the king of the region and cursed into eternal sleep by Tanzra. To repay them for breaking the curse, he teaches them how to build fortifications and pledges his life to defending them.

  • Badass Boast: When the angel questions why Tanzra cursed him to sleep instead of just killing him, Philotas speculates (off the top of his head, having never considered the question before) that he was simply too strong for a direct attack to work.
  • Holding Out for a Hero: Fillmore's problem, according to Philotas. The previous citizens of the land became so dependent on him that once he was out of the picture, Tanzra's minions easily overran the people. The character development of Fillmore's citizens has them achieve self-reliance and the confidence to take on foes without Philotas's help.
  • Slept Through the Apocalypse: Philotas falls victim to this before his rescue by the Fillmore leaders. According to Philotas, he used to rule over the lands that became Fillmore until his curse by Tanzra.
  • Stone Wall: His damage is pretty average, but has a ridiculous amount of HP. He can stop a ton of monsters in their tracks and keep them in place without needing to be healed for a while.

Daniella

A young woman discovered by Teddy during his explorations of the Bloodpool area. She had been living alone for years and has a bit of a hard time fitting in at first due to being one of the few humans capable of still using magic.

  • Badass Adorable: Develops into this over the course of the Bloodpool arc.
  • Cute Witch: At first, she's quite a coward, wanting to run away from her duties. Over the course of her arc, she develops into a fine witch, gaining the confidence to save the day.
  • Glass Cannon: Is the frailest ally you get, but she deals a lot of damage in a wide area.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: As illustrated in her artwork and part of her modest personality.
  • Shock and Awe: She primarily utilizes AoE lightning magic during settlement raids.
  • Shrinking Violet: She starts off as this, especially as she fully expects the residents of Bloodpool to be afraid of her magic. That doesn't stop her from fighting at all, though.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Goes from telling all of the Bloodmen to abandoning the settlement to giving Zeppelin Wolf a Shut Up, Hannibal! speech to spare Teddy from being sacrificed in the space of a few minutes. It's this act that generates her shard of starlight and names her Champion of Bloodpool.
  • Witch Classic: She wears a very large, pointy witch hat that identifies her as one immediately.

Alonso

A traveling mercenary who offers his services to the people of Kasandora. He soon reveals that he has journeyed to the region in search of a "king of gold."

  • Adventurer Archaeologist: He is an explorer and archeologist. Despite his selfish ways, he reveals that he has a softer side and spurs on the folk of Kasandora when the curse is upon them.
  • Cassandra Truth: Initially nobody believes his tales of the "king of gold," until one of the local women is lured into the pyramid and barely escapes with her life after encountering Pharaoh.
  • Cowboy: He's always seen with a giant revolver and a Stetson hat despite the area otherwise being Egypt-themed.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: He lost his faith after the death of his family, but that doesn't stop him from conversing with the Angel or rallying the people of Kasandora to break the pyramid's curse.
  • The Gunslinger: His giant revolver is quite capable of shooting down airborne targets, one at a time.
  • It's Personal: He seeks the king of gold not to get rich, but because Pharaoh destroyed his village and killed his wife and child.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: When the Kasandorans create the Harmonious Music, he steps away for a bit saying, "I just want the wind to be my companion for a while." The Angel notes Manly Tears being shed at the same time.
  • Only in It for the Money: Alonso claims to be this for his "if I don't get attached I won't get hurt again" rigmarole. He continues to insist as he entertains the children, helps with manual labor, and goes completely outside the scope of his contract to help the people (plus we never do see him getting paid.) He's so bad at being the callous mercenary that it gets him more attached: he's baffled and touched by the locals' generosity when they lovingly take him in, even though he's supposed to be the cold-hearted loner.

Migrana

A mysterious spirit first encountered by the Aitok as they begin to rebuild. While she initially tries to chase them off the land, she witnesses their dedication in fighting the demons and decides to help them out to see if they're worthy.

  • Abdicate the Throne: She's offered the Chieftain position near the end of the Aitos arc, but rejects it in favor of the new settlers, considering them much more worthy than she ever was.
  • The Atoner: As she gets her memories back and realizes the poor decisions she previously made that ultimately led up to the destruction of her people, she vows to never let it happen again
  • Deal with the Devil: Made one of these in the past in an attempt to spare her people. Of course, the devil cheated her and killed them all anyway.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner: Her attacks only hit one target at a time, but they are fast and deadly.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: Migrana first appears as a ghost, telling the folk of Aitos to leave her sacred land. She gets her body back through the events of the Simulation section.
  • Reverse Grip: How she holds her sword in her artwork.

Shemaal

A priest of Consecrate Green, a sect living alongside the residents of Marahna, who verbally clashes with the Angel numerous times over the course of the arc, but is always willing to risk himself and fight for the people no matter what.

  • Blow You Away: He specializes in single-target wind magic.
  • Crystal Dragon Jesus: He's a kind-hearted shepherd who wants to help the folk of Marahna despite his disagreements with the Angel. He's even a part of Consecrate Green, the religion that clashed with the Lord of Light's religion. He even becomes a chosen one after realizing that Consecrate Green didn't have the best of intentions for the folk of Marahna.
  • Enemy Mine: Long before he becomes a Champion, he still fights in tandem with the Angel to protect the people of Marahna and can be directed in battle.
  • Heel–Face Turn: While he was never really a Heel, he fully abandons Consecrate Green and dedicates his services to the Master after learning the truth.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: His reaction upon learning that Consecrate Green was really a Religion of Evil and he's been an Unwitting Pawn for them the whole time.
  • Politeness Judo: Never once raises his voice and calmly states his positions and logic to the Angel, often causing the latter to be at a loss for words.

Taia

A young woman discovered living in the wilderness by the people of Northwall. In gratitude for taking her in, she vows to fight for them, but also is conflicted due to the recent changes in her friend, Frost, and seeks the aid of the Master in helping him.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: She was mistreated by the previous residents of Northwall and driven out before being taken in by Frost.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: She has blue skin and more than bears a passing resemblance to the Jotunns of Norse Mythology.
  • Annoying Arrows: Subverted. Her arrows are not only deadly powerful against enemies (especially airborne ones), but she can hit several at once.
  • Badass Adorable: Easily the cutest of the heroes and doesn't hesitate to fight for the people of Northwall from the start.
  • Break the Cutie: After learning that her friend Frost has become that hateful and cruel Arctic Wyvern, who sent a wave of monsters to spite her, she cries in horror and sadness.
  • Five Stages of Grief: Throughout her time in Northwall, Taia goes through all five stages:
    • Denial: Taia at first refuses to believe that her friend Frost as actually the Arctic Wyvern.
    • Anger: Taia lashes out in anger at the Angel for refusing to save Frost.
    • Bargaining: She attempts to negotiate with Frost to stop sending monsters to menace Northwall.
    • Depression: After learning that the Frost she once knew is truly dead, she cries her heart out to the leaders of Northwall.
    • Acceptance: Taia accepts that Frost has irreversibly changed, and lets the Master put him out of his misery.
  • Older Than They Look: Taia looks like a young woman who has just recently become an adult, but it is heavily implied she is actually ancient. The Angel lampshades this.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She gives one to the Angel when he dismisses her pleas to help her friend upon learning that said friend is the Arctic Wyvern.

    Other Allies

Teddy

The son of the chieftain couple of Bloodpool. Considered a Manchild by the community, but ends up taking on a much greater role than they would ever initially expect.

  • Didn't Think This Through: When he sets off on his expedition to find Zeppelin Wolf's castle, he does so without taking any kind of provisions.
  • Escort Mission: Two of the story siege raids in Bloodpool involve protecting him from the monsters.
  • Hidden Depths: He sets out alone to prove that Daniella is not a liar and to find a means of infiltrating Zeppelin Wolf's castle.
  • Lottery of Doom: He proposes drawing lots to give everyone a fair chance after Zeppelin Wolf demands a sacrifice. Heavilly implied he rigged himself to be chosen so Daniella would not be.
  • Poor Communication Kills: One of his shortcomings that Daniella scolds him for is, while he did go off to search for a means to prove her claims right, he left without telling anyone and ended up needing her help. Twice!

The Lost Kasandoran

An unnamed citizen of Kasandora who gets lost when exploring the desert. While the people petition the Master to lead them to him, he passes on before they arrive.

  • Small Role, Big Impact: His death inspires the creation of the Harmonious Music, allowing the Master to stop the in-fighting in Bloodpool and resume its development.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Is introduced when the people pray for his return, but dies before they reach him.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: No matter how quickly the Angel leads the people to his location, he will always die before they can reach him.

Chieftain of Aitos

The leader of the new generation of Aitok who refuses Migrana's initial threats to leave the mountain. He is afflicted with a curse when later sealing a monster lair.

  • Cursed with Awesome: Upon realizing that the curse leaves him capable of learning where Migrana's body is, he makes sure the people recover it while they can and ends up dying with no regrets.
  • Determinator: When he's able to pinpoint the location of Migrana's body, he pushes himself beyond his limits to lead the people to recover it. This is despite him already being on his deathbed
  • Go Out with a Smile: Twice. First before falling into a coma, second upon his final death.
  • Last Request: He asks the Master to cry for his passing. Upon feeling the rain, he's able to die in peace.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: The nature of his curse. It eventually does kill him.

Villains

    Tanzra

Satan/Tanzra, Lord Adversary of Abyssal Dark

The archenemy of the Master. A being of incredible evil who desires to plunge the world into darkness and chaos.

  • Big Bad: The primary villain in both games. In the original and Renaissance, he is alive to oversee the destruction of the world. In 2, his champions seek to revive him and succeed.
  • Fallen Angel: In Actraiser 2 we learn that Tanzra used to be a servant of the Master, but he rebelled and was cast out of Heaven as punishment. He then plots to get revenge against the master by sending his seven demon lieutenants to cause chaos in the kingdoms of man.
  • Large and in Charge: In 2, he's at least four times as big as the Master's avatar and doesn't all fit in the screen.
  • One-Winged Angel: In the original and Renaissance, defeating his first form reveals a second, more monstrous form.
  • Satan: What he is, though Is not called this outside of Japan to avoid controversy in the original SNES games, instead being called Tanzra. Though released in a time where having the Devil in a video game is no longer controversial, Renaissance keeps the Tanzra name as an homage to the original game.
  • 13 Is Unlucky: Tanzra was resurrected by the hatred of 13 demons in the sequel.

    Act Raiser Champions

Centaurus, Wizard Knight of the Violet Vale

A large centaur who is wreaking havoc in the forest.
  • Magic Knight: As implied by his title, Centaurus uses both physical might and magic when fighting.

Minotaurus, Baleful Beast of the Accursed Axe

A monstrous bull-headed humanoid and the first big general of Tanzra the Master fights.
  • Our Minotaurs Are Different: He's a big purple minotaur who jumps several feet in the air. His primary color was changed to a more grayish one in Renaissance.

Manticore, Crimson Waters' Blasphemy

A ferocious scorpion tailed monster behind the toxicity of Bloodpool.

Zeppelin Wolf, Duke of Moonlit Devilry

A foul wolf spirit possessing the body of a sorcerer.
  • Dead All Along: Mixed with Dead Person Impersonation in Renaissance. Zeppelin Wolf did indeed exist before the Lord of Light arrived in Bloodpool, but he was killed by one of Tanzra's agents and his corpse was possessed by this same agent, turning him into the Vampire/Werewolf that appears as the boss. After the boss fight, the Angel comments that something was holding Zeppelin Wolf's full powers back, suggesting that a shred of the real Zeppelin Wolf's soul was still lingering in the agent's body.
  • One-Winged Angel: After being defeated in his human form, he will revert to his monstrous wolf form.
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: He's a sorcerous demon werewolf. In Renaissance it is revealed that his human form is actually the body of a man he'd taken over.

Dagoba, Sandstorm's Ravenous Scourge

A huge antlion that lurks in the desert.
  • Antlion Monster: A textbook example. More obvious in Renaissance, where he actually leaves his sand pit, revealing his full body, which looks less centipede-like compared to the original game.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: A giant demonic antlion.

Pharaoh, Golden Curator of Death and Dust

An old demon who dwells within a pyramid.
  • Nefarious Pharaoh: One that fittingly enough fights a Judeo-Christian inspired deity.

Azure Dragon, Hatred's Azure Flames

A violent water dragon encountered in a river.

Firewheel, Prince of the Inferno Everlasting

A flaming wheel demon with a grotesque face in its center.
  • Cyclops: In the original Actraiser , he had one eye.
  • Youkai: He is based on the Wanyuudou, a flaming wheel with a man's head attached to it.

Rafflasher, Blossom Beguiling and Gluttonous

A huge plant beast with an insatiable appetite.
  • Adaptational Curves: In the original Actraiser, Rafflasher was just a mass of vines and plant-like maws. In Renaissance, she has been turned into a beautiful dryad with a curvy body. Still just as deadly as her original counterpart.
  • Botanical Abomination: In the original Actraiser, Rafflasher is a fierce mass of predatory plants out to kill The Master.
  • Plant Person: In Renaissance only. She resembles a beautiful dryad, but she's out to kill The Master.

Kalia, Unholy Serpents in Grace Entwined

A multi-armed reptilian demon who schemed to steal the worshippers of the Master.

Merman Fly, Hermit of the Glacier's Grotto

A strange winged demon who lacks legs.

Arctic Wyvern, Wyrm Condemned in the North

The most powerful of Tanzra's generals, he is an ancient ice dragon with a sad past.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In the original ActRaiser, the Arctic Wyvern merely existed to be the literal Dragon to Tanzra. In Renaissance, the Wyvern is given a backstory; unlike the other Tanzra champions, the Wyvern, calling himself Frost, wanted to be more. He tried to create a place for the forlorn and the lost, succeeding when he met the Ambiguously Human Taia and becoming her friend. He was benevolent for years... but the return of the Lord of Light has made Tanzra increase his influence on Frost, reverting him back to the Arctic Wyvern.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: Frost tried to avert this, and to some extent, does succeed- he is able to spare the humans in Northwall twice. But Tanzra isn't happy that Frost is trying to buck his nature, and starts turning him back into a monster, necessitating a Mercy Kill.
  • Evil Former Friend: He used to be friends with Taia. He even raised her.
  • Forced into Evil: A rare case of a creature literally made out of evil being subject to this trope; despite his own nature as being born- if his words aren't meant as poetry- from Tanzra's frozen tears, Frost wanted to be more.
  • Helpless Good Side: Tragically for Frost, the fact that he was literally made out of Tanzra's evil means that he's basically doomed to be this. While the Lord of Light was dormant, Tanzra was content to let Frost obey his "whim" and take kindly, benevolent, constructive action... but once the Master returns, Tanzra starts forcefully hijacking him back to evil.
  • Made of Evil: Like every Tanzra champion. Unlike literally every other Tanzra aspect, however, the Arctic Wyvern developed antoher personality, Frost, who became benevolent, something the Angel specifically says Tanzra is unable to do. Sadly, this trope holds true; the innate evil that makes up Frost keeps trying to assert control, and will inevitably win no matter what he wants.
  • Mercy Kill: What his boss fight basically amounts to, and at his own request; Frost specifically wants the Master to kill him to preserve Taia and the new family she's found in Northwall. Taia is the sole proof that Frost was able to overcome his own inner evil long enough to do something good in the world. He refers to her as his legacy, the only thing he's done that's worth something. The Master's killing of him is less a triumphant act of singlehanded dragonslaying and more a tragic execution.
  • Split Personality: Tanzra's outside influence turns the benevolent Frost iunto an Expy of Smaug. The text even changes color to reflect the takeover.
  • Split-Personality Takeover: Nothing Frost does will prevent his Superpowered Evil Side from overwhelming him.
  • Tragic Monster: To such an extent that even the Angel modifies his words out of respect for his torment, referring to him not as Tanzra's servant but as his prisoner. Given the Angel's tendency to be a bit flippant, it's telling how much Frost's plight has moved him.

    Act Raiser 2 Champions

Fatigue

A gaunt demon who rides a cloud, the culprit behind Diligence's laziness.
  • Blow You Away: His cloud can blow the Master into the spikes at both sides of the stage, damaging him.
  • Dem Bones: A skeleton with a few strands of hair.
  • Dub Name Change: His name in the original Japanese version is Langour.
  • Gray Rain of Depression: His main job is using the rain from his cloud to make Diligence's people lazy to the point of losing their will to live.
  • Sinister Scythe: Wields one but attacks by launching smaller sickles as projectiles.
  • The Dragon: To Langour.
  • Vacuum Mouth: The cloud can suck in air and then shoot it out in small Razor Wind-like projectiles. The sucking motion also can pull the Master into the spikes as well.

Langour

A colossal evil snail who embodies Sloth.
  • Attack Its Weakpoint: Can only be hurt when its mollusk body is revealed.
  • Boss Rush: The first of the revived demons the Master faces in Death Heim.
  • Boulder Bludgeon: His main form of attack is to drop boulders down on the Master.
  • Dub Name Change: His name in the original Japanese version is Rusty Worm.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: He represents Sloth, takes the form of a giant snail, which are one of the slowest creatures.
  • Spikes of Doom: His second form of attack is to drop spiked balls carried by the river's current when he reveals himself out of his shell.

Envy

A humongous squid that is attacking Tortoise Island.
  • Giant Squid: Takes the form of one, keeping the Tortoise Island anchored and unable to move.
  • Go for the Eye: Its main weakpoint is its only eye. The main concern is avoiding its attacks or touching its spiked body.
  • Stationary Boss: Doesn't move throughout the battle, only attacking with a small claw near the eye weakspot.
  • The Dragon: To Jealousy.

Jealousy

A rotting head that, despite her name, is the true emobiment of Envy.
  • Boss Rush: The second revived demon in Death Heim.
  • Dub Name Change: Her original name was the Punny Name of Jealassic Flare.
  • Invincible Villain: The Master is unable to hurt her in any way throughout the stage. Only by destroying the Flame of the Devote Queen's personal jealousy will the demon be defeated.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: Takes the form of a zombie head with fangs and flowing hair.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: She represents the true vice of Envy (whose name was instead given to her Giant Squid minion), she fed off the Devote Queen's envious nature and eventually consumed her despite the Flame of her envy still burning deep within the submerged palace of Altheria.

Greed

A multi-eyed monstrosity that slowly shrinks as it gets hurt.
  • Amphibian at Large: Takes the form of a gigantic frog-like creature. As the Master damages it, however, it starts to shrink, making it harder to hit.
  • Extra Eyes: Has them all over its body.
  • The Dragon: To Gluttony.

Gluttony

A twisted ant queen who embodies Gluttony.
  • Beware My Stinger Tail: Gains one after being damaged enough.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Takes the form of a giant ant queen complete with enormous abdomen. As it gets damaged, it loses its attachment and fights on the ground in a smaller but still deadlier form.
  • Boss Rush: The third revived demon in Death Heim.
  • Dub Name Change: Averted. The only demon representing the Seven Deadly Sins which keeps its name the same from the Japanese version.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: Represents Gluttony. By using a colony of demonic ants, they stole the food from Temponia, causing a deadly famine.

Anger

A demon possessing the King of Justania.
  • Beard of Evil: The King of Justania has one now as he's possessed.
  • BFS: Attacks with one.
  • Demonic Possession: Took over the body of the King of Justania, forcing the Master to kill him to stop the war with Favorian.
  • Dub Name Change: His name in the original Japanese version is Vulcan.
  • Forever War: The end result if he wasn't stopped as all souls would go to his master, Fury.
  • The Dragon: To Fury.

Fury

A huge flaming demon who embodies Wrath.
  • Auto-Scrolling Level: The main stage hazard of this boss fight is the screen scrolling vertically up to down. A life is lost should the Master move too far down or stay on a volcanic rock as it scrolls upwards for too long.
  • Boss Rush: The fourth revived demon in Death Heim.
  • Deflector Shields: Surrounds himself with whirling rings of flame that prevents damage. The master must first remove the rings to damage him.
  • Dub Name Change: His original name was Furian.
  • Flaming Hair: His hair is a glowing orange flame. (Blue in his Boss Rush incarnation).
  • Playing with Fire: Given since he's surrounded by flaming ring shields, colored red and orange, has Flaming Hair, attacks with giant balls of fire and is fought in an active volcano.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: Represents Wrath. By having a minion possess the king of a large army and go to war with the neighboring kingdom, he forces a Forever War to feed himself with the essence of his sin.

Confusion

A voluptuous frost demon who embodies Lust.

Deception

The true grotesque form of Confusion who dwells inside of the King of Lovaous' mind.

Despair

A goofy looking but wily goblin king.
  • Cool Crown: Wears a big red and gold crown.
  • Evil Laugh: Closes his eyes and snickers when he sees the Master enter his chamber.
  • Our Goblins Are Different: He may have the familiar green skin and diminutive size, but he also wields magic and hovers around the screen, making him more of a sorcerer goblin than an actual one.
  • The Dragon: Is one to the literal dragon Doom.
  • Wardens Are Evil: Rules over Gratis Prison.

Doom

A large golden dragon who embodies Greed.
  • Boss Rush: The fifth revived demon in Death Heim. He fights in the same Auto-Scrolling Level inside the volcano after Fury's second demise.
  • Demonic Possession: One of the possible origins of this boss as he could have been a demon that possessed King Kolunikus just as Anger possessed the King of Justania.
  • Dragons Are Demonic: One of Tanzra's Champions and a personification of one of the Seven Deadly Sins.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: ...or Dragon, actually. Lives in a castle with an aura of gold, and wears a golden necklace around his neck, several gold bracelets on its arms and even more gold bracelets on his tail.
  • Scaled Up: The second possible where Kolunikus's greed literally transformed him via demonic influence into a dragon.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: Represents Greed. Through King Kolunikus, he taxed the people of Leon to the point of poverty just to amass wealth in Stormrook castle. Those who couldn't pay were sent to Gratis to be tortured and killed by his goblin minion-warden.

Destruction

A powerful demon who utilizes twisted technology and embodies Pride.
  • A.I. Roulette: Literally. It attacks by spinning various icons surrounding it. The highlighted icon reflects the move it will attack the Master with next.
  • Boss Rush: The final revived demon in Death Heim before facing Tanzra.
  • Dub Name Change: Its original Japanese name was the Destructor.
  • Final-Exam Boss: Considering its vast array of attack and the fact it's the only demon that can only be fought once all other 12 demons are defeated.
  • Mechanical Abomination: Looks and behaves more like a machine than an actual living creature. It's still considered one of Tanzra's Champions, however.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: Represents Pride. Through manipulating the people of Humbleton into believing they could be as powerful and standing equally with the Master, he had them build the Tower of Souls (originally Tower of Babel to further point the similarities to the Biblical story) to reach the Sky Palace and take their place alongside the Master and his followers.

    Other

"Unknown", Arbiter of Heaven's Law

An enigmatic celestial being who confronts the Master at the end of the remake’s post-game.
  • All There in the Script: Its name is withheld from the player at all times- except in the quest menu, where its name is revealed to be the Archangel.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Who it is is never clarified. Given it is known as Archangel, it could be a fallen angel rebelling against the Master, but ultimately this being's identity and goals are a total mystery.
  • Desperation Attack: At half health, it will summon an enormous, meteoric blast of energy that can potentially deal a One-Hit Kill if it hits the player.
  • Light Is Not Good: It has the same power and fights using magic and abilities very similar to the Master himself.
  • True Final Boss: Of Renaissance in the post-game.
