    Atsuko "Akko" Kagari

Atsuko "Akko" Kagari

Arcana: The Fool
Persona: Aradia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tv_tropes_post_3.png

The current holder of the power of the Wild Card, and the first student of Luna Nova to arrive from Japan.

  • Adaptational Badass: Akko is the wielder of the power of the Wild Card. This is a given.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: Well, more like Adaptational Book Smarts, but Akko is more invested in her studies, as her personas encourage her to be more studious.
  • Afraid of Needles: And boy does she have it, despite her denials. It's implied that it's tied to the scars on her arm that seem to come from a botched injection.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Both Lilim and Skogsra have kissed her on the cheek at least, and considering how Personas are representations of aspects of the subconscious mind, it's highly likely that she's attracted to women.
  • Catchphrase:
    • "Yay!"
    • "Doki Doki no Waku Waku!"
    • She also noticeably says "Bring it!" a lot when battling/enraged.
  • Contrasting Sequel Protagonist: Akko is this to Joker - beyond their contrasting color schemes (Dark Is Not Evil for Joker, Light Is Good for Akko), the two also have different relationships with their Wild Card powers: Joker only received his powers at the beginning of the story, while Akko said she got her powers several years before she goes to Luna Nova.
    • Akko is also one to Akechi - both possess/possessed the power of the Wildcard for some time prior to the events of the story, but while Akechi's powers were effectively useless due to his misanthropy and horrible childhood, Akko's powers are still able to function as intended due to her unfailing idealism.
  • Covert Pervert: After Skogsra kisses her on the cheek, Amanda suspects that between her and Lilim representing aspects of her subconscious, she's got a dirtier mind than she lets on, and no one buys Akko's claim that she doesn't have any perverted thoughts.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Something awful occurred long prior to Akko's arrival to Luna Nova and she has been keeping quiet about it even to her friends at that school. so far, Akko reveals that it's a life-threatening event that was the birthplace of her Persona power and also forces her to move to Inaba.
  • Didn't Think This Through: One omake scene reveals that Akko attempted to use Patra to calm down a bunch of angry baseball fans after their team lost a game, failing to consider that since they are still at the game, they'll remember why they were mad and get mad again. While she does manage to get things fixed, much more effort is required than she was expecting.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Akko assumes, as in canon, that Ursula is a fan of Shiny Chariot. Readers, in part due to Late-Arrival Spoiler, are well aware that Ursula actually is Shiny Chariot, who just decides to roll with Akko's assumption to avoid having to tell her the truth. Granted, Akko does know that there is more to Ursula than just that because her Arcana is The Hermit.
  • Experienced Protagonist: Akko has had her Wild Card powers for a few years prior to going to Luna Nova, and spent at least a year fighting Shadows so that she could get enough money to pay the tuition. She's already figured out which Shadows are most dangerous and several elemental resistances that her Personas possess.
  • Gamer Chick: Is apparently a Dragon Quest fan. Word of God is that this is part of the reason she keeps Slime around - the other is because of his resistances.
  • Genki Girl: Nothing really dampers the girl's disposition. Deconstructed, though, because her bright attitude makes her not a very good Wild Card user as her lack of sensitivity and tact was the reason Shadow Diana came to life.
  • Giver of Lame Names: A minor running gag is the other girls complaining about her attempts to name things.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: While clothed she looks perfectly fine but when unclothed, it's revealed that there are multiple scars all over her body, including shots belonging to botched injections.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: If you have an alternate world where reality can bend to your will and a girl with boundless imagination, you have a very deadly combo.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Ironically, despite dreaming of spreading smiles to the world, she has a surprising lack of tact which ultimately leads to the birth of Shadow Diana. After the matter was settled, Akko vowed to be more aware of other people's feelings.
  • Kill It with Fire: At the start of the story, Akko has an extreme weakness toward fire magic, as almost all of her Personas have weaknesses to fire.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Studied Wing Chun for a while, but nowhere near a master at it. Get beaten by Lin-Lin, an actual martial artist, easily.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Surprisingly downplayed. She is less prone to make rash actions and more on thinking smarter to help solve her problems.
  • Light Is Good: Akko's Cognitive World outfit(which is based on Shiny Chariot's stage outfit) is vibrantly colored.
  • Magnetic Hero: Quickly starts attracting friends after arriving to Luna Nova.
  • Primary-Color Champion: Akko's Cognitive World outfit is primarily white and blue, with a red cape and red and yellow accents.
  • Sanity Slippage: Subverted. Akko has been living and fighting in the Cognitive World for a year and so far, her personality still matches her canon counterpart's.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Of a sort - due to her adventures in the Cognitive World, Akko has amassed a collection of items that would make her obscenely wealthy in the Magical World. Just for an example, she treats Bicorn Horns as junk due to not having anyone to sell them to, while most witches would be scrambling to get them because of their magical properties and the fact that bicorns are an Endangered Species. There's also the fact that Shadows drop valid banknotes corresponding to whatever nation she is in, meaning that she always has a quick source of cash on hand.
  • She Is All Grown Up: We briefly get a glance at what Akko will look like when she grows up when Akko uses Ennervationnote  on herself. It's made clear that she will be very beautiful, enough that Sucy gets very flustered about said beauty and get's extremely embarrassed when pulled into a hug that brings her close to Akko's...generous tracks of land.
  • Tarot Motifs: Akko, who is just starting her education at Luna Nova and beginning her journey to restore the world's faith in magic, is the wielder of the Fool Arcana, which can, among other things, symbolize the beginning of a journey. More humorously, she is so far the only person associated with the Fool Arcana who actually is an example of The Fool, being a carefree soul whose plan to revive interest in witchcraft is to tour the world just like Shiny Chariot did.
  • Worthless Yellow Rocks: Akko tends to treat many of the items she gets from the Cognitive World - most of which would be worth a small fortune in the magical world - as junk if she cannot find an immediate use for them. Then again, Akko barely knew anyone from the Magical World before she showed up at Luna Nova, and nobody in her hometown would buy her loot.

Aradia, the Messiah of Witchcraft(False Goddess)

Akko's main persona.
  • Adaptation Expansion: Unlike with the Persona games, Aradia is explicitly treated as her own character, and directly interacts with the entire cast on several occasions.
  • Been There, Shaped History: It's revealed that Aradia has some significant role in developing magic and has met the Nine Olde Witches before who she heavily dislikes.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: With Arsenne. While both are the initial Persona's of their story's respective Wild Card, Arsenne acts as a Guardian Entity for Joker and encourages him to enjoy himself when taking down Shadows. Aradia, meanwhile, is The Mentor to Akko and advises the witch in training on how best to go about her studies.
  • Cool Teacher: Aradia takes a hands-on approach, nurturing and guiding her students when they need her help.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Aradia's appearance reeks of malevolence, but she genuinely cares about Akko and acts as The Mentor to her from time to time.
  • Foil: To Sucy - both are malevolent-looking characters associated with witchcraft that are close to Akko. Sucy, however, is Akko's first friend at Luna Nova and comes off as a Sarcastic Devotee, while Aradia is Akko's main persona, The Confidant for the new Wild Card, and also Akko's Spirit Advisor. Aesthetically, Aradia is Dark Is Not Evil while Sucy is Purple Is Powerful.
  • Irony: Akko practically worships the ground that Shiny Chariot walks on. According to Ursula, who is Shiny Chariot herself, her ancestors worshipped Aradia as their goddess over the Nine Olde Witches.
  • Light 'em Up: She can also utilize light-based attacks. Making her a case of Yin-Yang Bomb.
  • Mama Bear: Ursula reveals that Aradia is notorious for delivering brutal vengeance upon those that attempt on her charges' lives. As Akko's Persona, not even a descendant of her followers is exempted from her wrath.
  • Nightmare Face: It'd be accurate to say that Aradia's face looks more like a nightmarish painting of a face than an actual face. It's based on the Rorschach test. To make it even more nightmarish, Word of God said her head is actually a scepter ending in an empty crystal ball, with the face being akin to a mirage inside it.
  • Parental Substitute: Akko views Aradia like her second mother similar to how her canon counterpart views Professor Ursula.
  • Spirit Advisor: Aradia chimes in whenever she feels the need to advise Akko on a matter.
  • Spotting the Thread: Aradia's the only one who suspects Ursula's character.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: Aradia is capable of using both Light and Dark skills.

    Sucy Manbavaran

Sucy Manbavaran

Arcana: The Devil(social link with Akko), The Lovers (Persona)
Persona: Angitia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tv_trope_4.png

Poison obsessed witch from the Philippines. Akko's new best friend.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed - Sucy is a bit nicer toward Akko, but only because Akko's durability makes her an excellent test subject and the Cognitive World provides an unlimited supply of materials for her to use. Her interactions with her Shadow, though, make it clear that Sucy does genuinely see Akko as a friend, which she didn't seem to acknowledge at this point in Little Witch Academia's canon.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Sucy primarily sees Akko as a test subject, but her reaction to Lilim and Skogsra's antics, along with blushing when Akko carried her to safety suggests Sucy's interest may also be romantic in nature.
  • Blade Enthusiast: Sports a dagger she used to fight Shadows.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: It's happening at an absolutely glacial pace, but Sucy is gradually moving away from her aloof Mad Scientist character and starting to be a genuine friend to Akko. It's not much, but it is something.
  • Foil: To Goro Akechi from Persona 5. Both are the function as the Token Evil Teammate among their respective parties, while also having unique elements to their social links. As for differences:
    • Akechi betrays the party, albeit while being conflicted about his actions, and ultimately goes out in a Heroic Sacrifice that doubles as Redemption Equals Death. Sucy, by contrast, is truly loyal to her teammates while still being the most wicked among them.
    • While the two share an arcana quirk, how it works is expressed differently. Akechi is actually a bearer of the power of the Wild Card, but can only use the Fool Arcana, while representing Joker's Justice Arcana. Sucy, in contrast, wields the Lovers Arcana, but represents Akko's Devil Arcana.
    • In regards to how evil they appear, Akechi hides his wicked nature under a guise of affability, while Sucy just chooses to be obviously and unrepentantly bitchy, but is still a nice person in spite of this.
  • Gamer Chick: A hardcore Pokemon player apparently.
  • Greed: When she learns that there's an alternate world where there are free stuff, rare and powerful magical items to be exact, she immediately plans how to profit from it.
  • Mad Scientist: IT'S SUCY, that's a given. Part of the reason she warms up to Akko faster than in canon is that the former makes a good test subject. That this also gives her a potentially unlimited source of potion reagents that are either rare or literally nonexistent is just icing on the cake.
  • Master Poisoner: As in canon, this is a defining trait of Sucy. Part of her reason for being nicer to Akko is that the Cognitive World provides her an unlimited supply of materials for her poisons.
  • Mushroom Man: Her Cognitive World outfit is styled this way, having a mushroom cap for a hat.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Both Sucy's Persona and Cognitive World outfit have purple color schemes. Angitia has access to very powerful Aliments and Psy skills.
  • Ship Tease: Get's quite a bit with Akko. Sucy is noticeable unhappy when Lilim kisses Akko, and when Akko uses her personas to temporarily age herself into adulthood and pull Sucy into a hug, the latter gets very flustered due to being in close proximity to Akko's ample bosom.
  • Tarot Motifs: The Devil and the Lovers. For the former, Sucy is the most amoral of the team and absolutely unrepentant in her own personal wickedness, but she's ultimately very committed to her friends despite this. For the latter, in addition to possibly having feelings for Akko, she's working surprisingly well with someone that's the polar opposite of her.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Sucy may be a member of Akko's team, but she's also an unrepentant Jerkass.

Angitia, the Great Snake Charmer

Sucy's Persona. A Pre-Roman Italian Deity.

  • Medusa: Appearance-wise, Angitia resembles Medusa, having a feminine form with snakes for hair. Gorgeous Gorgon is NOT in effect, though.
  • Mushroom Man: Angitia's shoulder area resembles a mushroom cap.
  • Poisonous Person: Somewhat subverted. While she's Sucy's Persona, she doesn't start with skills that inflict Poison Ailment until later.
  • Xenomorph Xerox: Her overall design is based off a Xenomorph.

    Lotte Jansson

Lotte Jansson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tv_tropes_6.png

Finnish Witch specialized in communicating with living items as well as all manners of spirits. A diehard fan of a romantic novel series knowns as Night Fall.

  • Nice Girl: She's kind and open to others and is the one to keep her teammates in check. This is why Akko chooses her to console Diana during the Cognitive Diana incident since she is the only one that can provide a console to the girl. Sucy and Amanda are out of the question because.... you know, and Akko is needed in combat so she can't do it.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite being the sanest member of her group, she has some brief lapses. When told that there is an alternate world with dangerous monsters, she is eager to go there. Akko even points it out.
Akko: Lotte… is it just me or are you actually weird inside?
    • Lotte can be fanatical in her dreams like Akko and Sucy. Her dream being Night Fall.
  • Only Sane Man: Romance-novel issues aside, Lotte is the sanest of the main trio, with Sucy being a Mad Scientist and Akko having questionable sanity due to spending so long in the Cognitive World.
  • The Team Normal: Downplayed - she's still a witch in training, but Lotte is the only major member of Akko's team who doesn't have a Persona yet.note

Wispy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wispy.png

Common species of fire spirit in the Magical World. Lotte's beloved pet and lives inside her skull lantern.

    Diana Cavendish

Diana Cavendish

Arcana: The Priestess
Persona: Minerva

Arguably the best and most brilliant student in all of Luna Nova. Direct descendant of Nine Olde Witch, Beatrice Cavendish, and is the heiress to her line.

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Diana and Akko end up becoming friends relatively early into the story due to Akko helping her sort out her issues (and save Diana from her own Shadow).
  • Always Someone Better: Is on both the giving and receiving end of this with Akko - she's more skilled at normal magic than Akko will ever be, but Akko's persona powers outclass her (and as a Wildcard, Akko's powers will ultimately exceed her no matter how much effort Diana puts into improving her Persona abilities).
  • Becareful What You Wish For: Diana is obsessed in obtaining Persona powers and she got it after getting kidnapped by her Shadow self and nearly getting killed in the process.
  • Break the Haughty: Goes through an absolutely epic example in the first two days of class: first, the unexpected encounter with Aradia. Then she tries to free her friends from the fear-induced coma the Persona has inflicted on them, only to fail miserably (and to add insult to injury, Akko manages to do what she couldn't and heal them using Pixie), resulting in her doubting herself. Then, she tries to approach Akko on her powers, only to have her secret that she's a Shiny Chariot fan reveal to the entire school, something she had previously disparaged Akko for being. Then, she sees Akko and co. entering the Cognitive World and attempts to blackmail them for the information, only for Sucy to throw it right back at her. And finally, all of the aforementioned issues lead to her developing a Distortion, kidnapped, and almost getting killed by her Shadow.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She starts out as a privileged Rich Bitch Academic Alpha Bitch, but after the 'epic Break the Haughty events mentioned above, she mellows out considerably and becomes Akko's friend.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Akko having access to the power of Personas secretly drives her up the wall, as Diana views them as a threat to her being top of her class. She moves past this once she accepts her Shadow.
  • Humble Pie: The entire first arc counts as this, as she ends up humiliated and kidnapped by her own Shadow after believing herself to be top of the Luna Nova food chain with regards to students. She takes it rather well and mellows out considerably.
  • Hypocrite: Disparages Akko for liking Shiny Chariot despite being a fan herself. Drops this after her Distortion is handled, as Diana comes to terms with her own desires and makes peace with Akko.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing: After Persona abilities are explained to her, she assumes that Akko will be the Jack of All Trades, and thus, while Akko will have more versatility than her, Diana will exceed Kagari in the field of the Priestess Arcana. While she's mostly right, neither party is aware that Akko maximizing her bonds with others will improve the Personas she can summon, eventually making her a Master of All.
  • The Resenter: Shadow Diana reveals that despite her upholding the rules and traditions of witches, Diana actually hates it and hates the witch society, especially Luna Nova and her aunt Daryl for being selfish and hypocrites and ruining her family's legacy.
  • Sanity Slippage: The stress over Akko revealing her as a Chariot fan, combined with being unable to figure Akko and her Personas out, does a number on her, culminating in her Shadow self kidnapping her.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: After awakening her Persona and becoming a Big Eater, she becomes addicted to ramen.
  • White Mage: Her skills and abilities as the Priestess Arcana lean here.

Minerva, the Goddess of Wisdom

Diana's Persona.

  • Attack Drone: Owl of Minerva serves as this. Allows her to supplement her Squishy Wizard status.
  • Fire, Ice, Lightning: The Owl can also be endowed with elemental attacks.
  • Irony: Diana is incredibly refined and aristocratic, but Minerva has a childish and whimsical appearance. Given that she comes from Diana's repressed childish side, it makes sense.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: Her approach in teaching Diana is to let her deal with problems on her own. This causes an argument between her and Aradia who prefers the hands-on approach.
  • Squishy Wizard: Have access to 4 elements, which is incredibly powerful for an initial Persona, however in exchange she is a total Glass Cannon and has the physical stat of wet noodles.

    Hannah England and Barbara Parker

Tropes Applying to Both

  • Butt-Monkey: Put through an entire obstacle thanks to Lilim's antics.
  • The Dividual: They're never seen separately and are effectively a single person.
  • Nominal Importance: Their only major role in the narrative so far is that they are Diana's friends.

Hannah England

A member of Diana's Girl Posse.
  • Those Two Girls: Has this dynamic with Barbara.
  • True Companions: With Diana and Barbara - when Diana is in her room after being outed as a Shiny Chariot fan, the other two immediately come to her aid and affirm that they don't think any less of her for it.

Barbara Parker

Another member of Diana's Girl Posse.
  • Those Two Girls: Has this dynamic with Hannah.
  • True Companions: With Diana and Hannah - when Diana is in her room after being outed as a Shiny Chariot fan, the other two immediately come to her aid and affirm that they don't think any less of her for it.

    Amanda O'Neil

Amanda O'neil

Arcana: The Chariot
Persona: Setenta

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tv_tropes_17.png

A rebellious Witch from America. Luna Nova's residential tomboy and super popular with other students.

  • Beneath the Mask: All of her bravado hides her various insecurities regarding her family.
  • Birds of a Feather: Gets along well with Teddy when they realize that the other crossdresses, even swapping tips.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Her envy towards her friends with Persona makes her desire to have a Persona of her own.
  • Hidden Depths: Shadow Amanda reveals that the bravado Amanda puts up is just a mask to hide her own inadequacies.
  • Red Is Heroic: Her Cognitive World outfit is primarily red in color, with green highlights.
  • Secretly Wealthy: The cognitive copy in Diana's Distortion reveals that she is from an affluent family, but she really does not like to be associated with them.
  • The Gunslinger: Has this motif in her Cognitive World outfit, along with the Wild West.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She gets yelled at by Akko for going to the Cognitive World with just herself and her roommates without any real experience to actually brave through the obstacles there.
  • Wild West: This is the theme of her Cognitive World outfit. She feels embarrassed by it because it reminds her that she was once a western fangirl.

    Constanze Amalie von Braunschbank Albrechtsberger

Constanze Amalie von Braunschbank Albrechtsberger

Arcana: The Magician

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tv_tropes_c.png

Tech-savvy witch from Germany. Unlike most of Luna Nova, she's the only one with an interest in maxing tech and magic.

  • The Blacksmith: Acts as one for Akko and her team now that she is at Luna Nova and thus cut off from her usual allies in Inaba.
  • Closet Geek: Reveals herself to be a fan of Mecha Anime when visiting Inaba.
  • Cute Mute: Doesn't talk, either out of inability or disinterest.
  • Magitek: Constanze has an interest in creating this, which puts her at odds with other witches, who scorn technology as a whole.
  • The Quiet One: She doesn't speak. It isn't specified if this is because she can't speak or because she chooses not to.
  • Uniformity Exception:
    • Most witches are very distrustful of modern technology. Constanze, however, sees nothing wrong with making Magitek.
    • Most Wild Card users tend to create the Magician Arcana as their first social link/confidant. Akko, however, forms her bond with Constanze well after she has formed her team.
  • Wrench Wench: Loves tinkering with machines and building Magitech.

Stanbot#1

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tv_tropes_31.png

Constanze's assistant robot. #1 is considered the prototype of the series she is currently developing.

  • Do-Anything Robot: Constanze can use magic to change it into almost any tools and weapons. That's already considering it already had an insane number of functions built-in.
  • Magitek: Runs on Mana instead of electricity.
  • Machine Monotone: It had that in the story as opposed to canon LWA's child voice. But it's hinted it's going to grow out of it.
  • Robot Buddy: Acts as Constanze's assistant.
  • Video Game Systems: It is, of course, a modified PS1, and can function like one.

    Jasminka Antonenko

Jasminka Antonenko

Arcana: The Hunger

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tv_tropes_8.png

A food-obsessed Witch from Ukraine.

  • Big Eater: As always. She even manages to down THE CHALLENGE in Inaba on her first go - something that the Investigation Team was unable to achieve until after a lot of action in the Cognitive World. In a more unnerving example, she's possessed by an Embodiment of Death known as Holodomor, the artificial famine engineered by the Soviet Union during Collectivization that killed millions of Ukrainians. This is the reason behind her large appetite.
  • Demonic Possession: Is possessed by Holodomor, an Embodiment of Death formed from an artificial famine, and the reason why she's such a Big Eater. Notably, in the occasions that it's asleep or sated, she's significantly more focused.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Her eyes are never shown as being open.
  • Uniformity Exception: Jasminka doesn't have a Persona. She supports the team by manifesting as Holodomor and devouring enemy Shadows.

     Ursula Callistis/Chariot du Nord

Ursula Callistis/Chariot du Nord

Arcana: The Hermit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/teacher_tv_trops.png

The youngest teacher within Luna Nova's staff.

  • I Hate Past Me: Downplayed, but she's rather embarrassed by how much skin her Shadow Self shows off when dressed as a younger Chariot.
  • It's All My Fault: Chariot feels responsible for Akko lacking normal magical talent due to something involving her show in Japan. Meeting Akko at Luna Nova eventually leads to her Shadow manifesting due to her feelings of guilt.
  • Last of His Kind: Is one of the last Umbra witches, if not the last.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: The fact that Ursula is Shiny Chariot is spoiled very early into the story, and is part of the reason that her Shadow manifested herself rapidly.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Mentoring Akko and help her regain her magic potential is this for her. Now that she's aware of Diana's presence at that show and her recovery from said show, she's even more determined to do the right thing.
  • Oh, Crap!: Not only did Chariot caused Akko and Diana to lose their magic but she also unintentionally attack the former, inciting the wrath of her ancestor's goddess.
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: As shown by Shadow Chariot, Ursula's glasses aren't needed for her to see. The implied reason she wears them is so that no one figures out she used to be Shiny Chariot.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: Ursula's efforts to live up to Akko's beliefs in her make up the secondary plot of the story, though we mostly only see tidbits of it in the main story.
  • Uniformity Exception: Ursula's Shadow is, so far, the only Shadow shown that isn't immediately accepted by her physical self but doesn't go berserk. Instead, Shadow Ursula acts as an encouraging influence for her physical self, encouraging her to try and live up to the example she set for Akko.

Shadow Chariot

Arcana: The Star

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shadow_chariot_tv_tropes_0.png

Ursula's Shadow Self.

  • Badass Cape: Has a prominent red cape, and is a representation of Ursula at her prime.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Yeah, she's called Shadow Chariot, but she's a lot more docile than normal shadows and is more focused on making Ursula back into the person she was who inspired Akko to become a Witch as opposed to who Ursula is right now.
  • Fiery Redhead: Downplayed at the moment, but her determination to whip Ursula into shape is pretty high, and unlike Ursula, she proudly shows off her bright red hair.
  • Hotter and Sexier: Shadow Chariot's normal attire shows off more skin than Ursula's normal outfit (including some of her inner thighs), and some of the art shows her wearing clothes that, while not too revealing, leave little to the imagination regarding Ursula's figure. Ursula is clearly embarrassed by this.
  • Light Is Good: Wears a vibrant outfit and is one of several openly heroic shadows we see in the story.
  • Mama Bear: Shadow Chariot is the embodiment of Ursula's desire to protect Akko and her friends, so this is a given.
  • Primary-Color Champion: Her outfit is a mix of red, white, blue, and yellow, and while she isn't The Hero of the story, she's whipping said hero's mentor back into shape.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Like all Shadows, she has yellow eyes.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vii_chariot_slime.png

  • Blob Monster: He's a creature made of slime much to the amazement or disgust of others.

[VIII] The Justice

Jeanne d'Arc

A French heroine who appeared towards the end of the Hundred Years War. She is nicknamed "the Maid of Orleans." Upon receiving a vision from God at the age of 16, she took a stand to save France. Later she was captured at Compiègne and was burned at the stake in Rouen. Posthumously, her conviction was overturned, and later she was canonized as a Catholic Saint.

  • Actor Allusion: Megumi Han voiced both Akko and Rage of Bahamut/Granblue Jeanne d'Arc.
  • Expy: Rage of Bahamut / Granblue's Jeanne d'Arc, even have her own version of Holy Spear Maltet. After becoming Akko's Persona, she resembles a fusion between both series' Jeanne.

[IX] The Hermit

  • Heroic Sacrifice: Allow herself to be fused to help Akko in defeating Shadow Diana.

[XV] The Devil

Lilim

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xv_devil_lilim.png

A demon who tempts sleeping men and attacks infants. She is the daughter of the demoness, Lilith. Like her mother, she drains men of their essence.

Vetala

The most dangerous of all Preta in Hindu and Buddhist myth. Classified as "powerful ghosts," they have varying shapes and forms. They can control the dead and eat humans.

[XVIII] The Moon

Skogsra

Beautiful wood faeries of Swedish folklore. They are said to resemble beautiful women from the front, but their backs are covered in bark. They are known to blow on huntsmen's rifles to bless them, as well as protect campfires while travelers sleep. They yearn for the company of a man, but those who see their backs flee in terror.

  • Screw Yourself: Also has the same feelings towards Akko much to Lilim's dismay.

Arc Antagonists

Arc I: Aim to be the Top

Shadow Diana / Amduscias

Arcana: Reversed Priestess

  • Ambition Is Evil: Is the embodiment of Diana's Ambition gone out of control, wanting to rise to the top and restore the magical world by any means.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: This is likely more due to the art style, but the fur coat she wears in her normal form, while meant to invoke regality, comes off as being gaudy and disheveled, which in a way emphasizes the shallowness aspect of the Reversed Priestess - she attempts to have a regal appearance without actually possessing one. Her makeup also comes off as unflattering.
  • Evil Knockoff: Wields a Cognitive replica of the Shiny Rod made out of tree roots. Shadow Chariot's own manages to win against it.
  • Green Thumb: Uses plant magic a few times, most notably with her Cognitive Shiny Rod being a construct of vines.
  • Insufferable Genius: Due to being Diana's Shadow, she can't help but flaunt her superiority over others she deems beneath her.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: For all the boasting how she elevated herself above everyone, she was defeated after being painfully brought down to earth.
  • Our Centaurs Are Different: Her berserk form has four pillar-like legs made of gold and adorned with statues of witches, the humanoid portion looks like a living marble statue. She has a sorcerer's stone as a horn, and the connecting portion is made of plants perhaps a hint to the fate of all-powerful witches....
  • Shown Their Work: The sleeves on the statues of witches around her legs look like trumpets, which are part of Amduscias domain in the Ars Goetia.
  • Smug Snake: Her sheer power and might are overshadowed by her arrogance. It takes one or two setbacks in her plan to set her off.
  • Tarot Motifs: Reversed Priestess, symbolizing shallowness and lack of human connections. She represents how Diana has isolated herself from others to prove herself as the top of her class, while also representing her disdain of Shiny Chariot for how her magic was mostly just for show, even though Diana herself loved those shows.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Shares the real Diana's desire to restore her family name and revitalize magic, but is willing to go to extreme lengths to do so.

Cognitive H&B

Arcana: Lovers

  • Bodyguard Babes: They protect Shadow Diana from any danger.
  • Elite Mooks: They jump in to support Shadow Diana at the mid-point of the battle. They make things worse for Akko's team with healing spells and breaking Hārītī's walls.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Get cut down by Vetala.

Cognitive Bernadette/ Hārītī

Arcana: Priestess

Luna Nova Students

     Sarah Bernhardt

     Wangari, Joanna, and Kimberly

     Chen Lin-Lin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/linlin_0.png

One of the 2 Chinese transfer students of Luna Nova. A skilled practitioner of Tai Chi.

  • Adaptation Name Change: Gained the last name Chen, a very common Chinese last name, as well as after the Chen style of Tai Chi.
  • Stern Teacher: Served as this to Akko by teaching her principle of combative Tai Chi.

Pixie Hair Club: Catherine and Zizi

Lin-Lin's teammates are hosting an unpopular short hair club.

  • Bullying the Dragon: Zizi attempts to capture Pixie as their mascot despite knowing that will get Akko's attention. Unfortunately, she realizes too late that it isn't only Akko that she has to worry about.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Catherine didn't hesitate for a second in leaving Zizi to take Pixie's full wrath.

Shiny Chariot Club: Leona and Zoe

A pair of girls that were once bullied for being Shiny Chariot fans. Formed the school's official Fanclub with Akko as adviser and Diana's blessing.

  • Expy: Of the League of Legends Champions of the same names. Because NCS's editor is a massive LOL fanboy.
  • Hero-Worshipper: They worshipped Shiny Chariot much like Akko and Diana but withheld their passions out of fear of being bullied. However, Akko and Diana helped fix that, allowing them to be more open about it.

Luna Nova Faculty

     Professor Anne Finneran

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/finnelan_tv_tropes.png

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed. While she's still a stickler to the rules and traditions, she is more lenient towards Akko after seeing the latter's incredible magic prowess.

     Professor Samantha Badcock

    Professor Nelson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nelson_tv_tropes.png

  • Casting Gag: Professor Nelson mentions that she once worked for a delivery service.note
  • Cool Teacher: Other than Holbrooke and Ursula, Nelson is very supportive towards Akko and even respects her for taming the Shooting Star broom.

Allies in Japan

     Ayame Okui

Ayame Okui

An isolated fujoshi mangaka Akko met while preparing for Inaba's X-mas celebration before attending Luna Nova. She eventually became Akko's artistic adviser.

She is a character originated from Hacka Doll, a short anime TRIGGER co-produced with Creators in Pack.

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Up a notch compare to Hacka Doll, here she's completely given up on drawing her doujinshi and attending any conventions. Her Shadow admits that she's suicidal but is just too cowardly to go through with it.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Gained the last name Okui, after the director of Hacka Doll, Ikuo Geso's real last name.
    • Meaningful Name: Considered Ikuo Geso was one of the key animators of Enchanted Parade, it's so fitting that she became Akko's artistic adviser.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: The prime reason why she's so isolated from other people and family members.

Friendly Shadows

Shadows that are surprisingly not hostile to Akko, even going as far as becoming her friends.

     Neko Izakaya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/neko_izakaya_tv_tropes.png

A humble restaurant set up by a group of Nekomatas. They are non-hostile, powerless, and only wish to serve food to other Shadows.

     Jack Bros

Jack Frost and Jack-o-Lantern

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jack_bros_1.png

A pair of Shadows residing in Inaba. Very good friends with Akko and serve as her merchant for rare items.

Embodiment of Death

Powerful Shadows that are signs of an upcoming calamity. They served as challenging Extra Bosses that Akko and her team must face. They are effectively the Fiend bosses from the mainline SMT series.

     Melody of Fear of Death

David

The violinist of death. Attacked Akko a few months before her enrollment into Luna Nova at Cognitive Tokyo. Embodies the fear men feel toward their inescapable end.

  • Achilles' Heel: Weak to Electric spells and Akko was barely able to defeat him by destroying his violin.
  • Skeletal Musician: Has this motif, going with his embodiment of the Primal Fear of death.
  • Graceful Loser: Wasn't mad that he lost to Akko at all and even congratulates her for beating him.

Witch Hunters

Powerful Shadows went berserk, going as far as attacking other Shadows in order to locate and hunt down "Witches". They served as challenging Extra Bosses.

Angel group and Vengeful Jeanne d'Arc

Angel group

A trio of angels consisted of Archangel and 2 Angels. They seek out Akko's help in hope of reviving a bygone saint.

Vengeful Jeanne d'Arc

Corrupted Jeanne d'Arc, apparently the result of the masses entertaining the idea of her returning as a vengeful being.

Others

    Angra Mainyu

Angra Mainyu

Arcana: Jester

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angra_mainyu_tv_tropes_4.png

The Zoroastrianism God of Evil.

  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: He looks vaguely like a humanoid insect, albeit one with demonic horns and only four limbs (wings don't count here).
  • Horns of Villainy: Is the literal embodiment of all evils in existence, and has an absolutely massive pair of horns.
  • Noodle Incident: Has a history with Aradia.
  • No-Sell: Straight up nullifies all ailments, since he is the source of them all.
  • Purple Is Powerful: His body is colored purple, and he is shown to be well beyond Akko's capacity to defeat.
  • Smug Super: Looks down on most humans, and is more than capable of giving Akko a run for her money, but underestimates the black cubes and pays for it before Akko rescues him. Aradia even lampshades how being excessively prideful is a form of Evil.
  • Tarot Motifs: The Jester, representing someone who has the traits of a Fool, but is unwilling to work with others and has misguided aims. Fittingly, Angra Mainyu actually defies Evil Is Sterile and is fully able to create good things, but willingly refuses to do so out of spite. His interactions with Akko also have him refuse to help her out of pride, even though his aid was something she really needed.
  • Villain Respect: After the baseball riot incident is resolved, he actually shakes Akko's offered hand, saying that he's sure that they'll meet again before vanishing.
