Awesome / The Alamo (2004)

Go To

  • A cannonball lands in the courtyard, and all the men scurry away. Travis points out that they can use it, and the men tell him to go get it himself. So Travis does.note  He sticks it in one of their cannons and fires it back at the Mexicans. Even Bowie is impressed by this.
  • "I wanna warn you all... I'm a screamer."
    • It should be noted that more than the Mexicans surrounding him look either afraid of this helpless, unarmed man in front of him, or disgusted that they have to kill this brave, worthy enemy in such a brutal manner.
    • He gets another one a minute before: surrounded, bound, wounded and utterly alone, he replies to Santa Anna's ultimatum by accepting... but he doesn't know if he can guarantee the safety of the whole Mexican army when they surrender.
  • Crockett having the balls and ability to harmonize with the Mexicans playing El Degüello over and over again with his fiddle. The result is... something else. Even the Mexicans are impressed with his gumption.
    "It's amazing what a little harmony'll do."
  • Crockett shooting a epaulet off Santa Anna's shoulder. "Wind kicked up."
  • Bowie gets one during the final battle. On his deathbed of tuberculosis, he still had enough strength to shoot dead two Mexican soldiers and try to reach his knife as they break through the door.
  • An easily missed exchange between Travis and Crockett:
Travis: You and your men will defend the palisade.
Crockett: Palisade. You talking about that pile of sticks of right there?
    Travis: Prefer a different assignment?
Crockett: No, actually that was the one I was gonna put in for.
  • Indeed, this does pay off towards the end. In a nice little bit of Irony, the palisade was the only wall the Mexicans didn't scale during the battle proper. Out of all the defenders, Crockett and his Tennesseans held out the longest at their posts.
  • Sam Houston is made of awesome.
    • First off, there's his shutting down of Texian President David Burnet's demand for independent militia command:
Houston: No. I will command all or none.
  • San Jacinto gives him several in succession. First is his epic Rousing Speech just before the battle:
Houston: You will remember this battle! Remember each minute, each second, till the day that you die! That is for tomorrow, gentlemen! For today...REMEMBER THE ALAMO! The hour is at hand!
  • The Texian army proceeds to curb-stomp Santa Anna's in just 18 minutes.
  • During the battle, his horse gets shot out from under him, presumably breaking his leg. Yet Sam manages to get back on his feet until the battle is over.
    • And afterwards, once Santa Anna has been captured, the Texians are about ready to lynch him on the spot. Houston puts a stop to that with one sentence.
Houston: You'll settle for blood. I want Texas.
