Kayko & Kokosh (Kajko i Kokosz) is an 2021 Netflix original Animated Adaptation of a long-running Polish comic book series of the same name. Notable for being the first animated Netflix Original from Poland. Season 1 will feature 26 episodes.
Apart from many tropes present in the original comic, Kayko & Kokosh provides the examples of:
- Abusive Offspring: Kaprilda constantly yells at her devoted father, Ramparam, who caters to her every whim and is even shown to be scared of her.
- Adaptational Badass: Misty, the priestess from episode 08. While in the book, Misty helped Kayko and Kokosh escape the island and saved their lives, she was still loyal to her mean master, the Archpriest, and worked from the shadows behind his back. In the episode, not only she becames a much more active character but gets an empowering arc about breaking from her blind devotion and openly standing up to her master after realising he betrayed the principles of their peaceful religion. At the end, she goes against her own rules and drinks the sacred honey and use its powers to challenge her master to a magic duel and ultimatly wins by outsmartig him.
- Adaptation Expansion: What was "Szkoła Latania", a single comic book, got split into two episodes, one focusing on the titular flying school and the other on the Breakbone's flute; Hegemon taking it out of petty spite unaware of its "power" got changed into him deliberately stealing it in yet another plan to take over Mirmilville.
- "Mirmił's beloved golden cub only appeared in the very first (three-part) story of the original comic. In the show, the golden cub is given more prominence as it appears throughout the entire series, not just in the adaptation of the particular story where the beloved item played a role. A new running gag involves Lubava constantly trying to prevent her husband from drinking wine from the cub."
- Cudly the dragon appeared in three books and handful of short stories before being written out of the series by Christa. In the show his initial story becomes the focus of the first episode, and he becomes a consistent companion for the main characters throughout most of the episodes, including many adaptations of stories where he originaly didn't appeared (even if having a small role in them). Jutified by the fact that despite being companions of Kayko and Kokosh only for a short period in the original comics, over the years Cudly grown to his own popularity, becoming a fan favorite and iconic Polish comic book character, overshadowing any Cousin Oliver status.
- Adaptational Comic Relief: Kaprylda while sitll true to her sinister side get's plenty of comical qualities (see "Composite Character" for more information)
- Adaptational Ugliness: Minor examples but while Misty and Kaprilda are still very pretty looking, in orginal Christa comics they where drawn in much more realistic/serious style, which if adapted 1:1: to animation would made them stand out as if they where from a difrent show. The show make them more cartoonish lookng, closer to the rest of the cast and in Kaprilda's case feel more like a teen (where orginal feels more like an adult women).
- Best Out of Infinity: The rock-paper-scissors game between Kayko and Kokosh about who gets to go on holiday gets changed from one offscreen play to "played for a few hours until Kayko won".
- Barely-Changed Dub Name: Most names got altered ever so slightly when translating to English, mostly to remove the Polish-only letters or to make the pronunciation more obvious.
- Barrier-Busting Blow: In the first episode, Corporal is running from Hegemon after reporting that Kayko and Kokosh intercepted the delivery of the dragon egg. He runs out of the keep, slamming the door behind him. Hegemon punches through the door with his fist... and then grabs the handle to actually open the door.
- Composite Character: Kaprilda is a mix of her personality from the books and the character Fochna. While both characters share a lot of similarities as dangerously spoiled princesses with devoted fathers, animated Kaprilda's anger outbursts (including constant vase-breaking pass time) and more childish quirks are borrowed from Fochna. However, Kaprilda retains her manipulative and mean-spirited nature from her true portrayal.
- Dub Name Change: Breakbone and Cuddly were called Łamignat and Miluś in the original Polish comic. The main gord's name swapped the Polish town suffix (-owo, Mirmiłowo) to an English one (-ville, Mirmilville).
- Improvised Weapon: Hegemon uses a broom as a spear after sharpening it with his teeth in one motion.
- Mythology Gag: In the opening title at few points the shots turn into some of the series' most iconic covers.
- Kaprilda mention Fochna, Emotka and Kochna comming to her party. All three characters are difrent princess characters from the original series (who didn't appear in show itself).
- In the same episode, to please Kaprilda, her father Ramparam, goes on a quest to find the egg of the legendary firebird as a gift for her. This is a quest Kayko and Kokosz actually had during the "Szranki i Konury" saga.
- Not Really a Birth Scene: The scene when Cuddly's egg is about to hatch after Kokosh heated it up with him in bed is portrayed as such, with even Kayko patting his hand as Cuddly is born.
- Rich Bitch: Kaprilda has an incredibly wealthy father who constantly brings her jewels as gifts. Unfortunately, this only makes her grow more mean and spoiled.
- Quarter Hour Short: Each episode is about 12 minutes long.
