In real life, bears hibernate once they get enough food to survive the winter and are known to be very [[MamaBear protective parents]]. Nobuyuki's crime was that he killed his mother for criticising his indolent lifestyle, something that justified his death to the other mask wearers. Plus, it wasn't Nobuyuki's sin of sloth that killed his mother, it was his wrath about being criticised. Making the mask representation a little more accurate. To the non-Japanese audience, it also serves as a visual reference to the phrase "(as) busy as a hibernating bear" which describes someone as lazy and inactive.
