* TearJerker: John's family makes it to the last airplane just in the nick of time. As they take off, many other cars pull onto the runway--the audience never sees the people within, but you know that all of them (probably with families, like John) just watched their last hope fly away.
** As John's family first leaves to get to their bunker, another family flags them down, pleading with them to take them along and, when that fails, at least wanting them to take their daughter. Since nobody but John and his family would be allowed, they're forced to drive away, while the other family can only sob helplessly. What's worse is that, as many people have pointed out, it was '''the right thing to do'''. Only John and his family would be allowed safe passage and that invitation didn't extend to anyone else, not even a guest. If they had brought the girl with them, she have been turned away and left to die alone.
** "Where are the flashes? Before we die, where are the flashes?"

** The people in the red minivan who give Allison a ride to the base; she didn't flag them down, they stopped and asked her if she needed a ride.
** Once the survivors of the plane crash reach the bunker, they get the attention of a military truck which comes and picks them up and all of them are allowed into the bunker regardless if they were selected or not. Even when the apocalypse is ''minutes'' away, human decency still remains a top priority.
** The nurse, still doing her job even at the end of the world, giving away her stocks of insulin to a desperate family. More broadly, all the military and government personnel, pilots and even air traffic controllers out working to assist other people to the very end.
** The very end of the movie: And first, the military stationed at Greenland are heard sending out radio calls, searching for survivors as the bunkers opened and everyone inside silently stares at the wreckage of their planet. Then birds are heard chirping and two fly in front of them, causing everyone to smile. Then as the survivors step out and we see the planet, we hear more radio stations responding to the earlier calls, showing there are more survivors, ending the movie on a hopeful note.

* NightmareFuel:
** In a more meta sense, the movie is frequently praised for its accurate depiction of how some might react when Earth is threatened with a planet-killer comet. The film is not afraid to show how far some can go to survive. The sheer idea of this realism is enough to invoke fright.
** One particular scene stands out, both for its subtlety and utterly terrifying implications. When John is searching for his family about midway through the movie, he happens to look up at the night sky. It's ''filled'' with cometary fragments, and he can see them coming down one right after the other, lighting up red on the horizon. ''Everyone'' follows his gaze, and is stuck dumb by the sight. More frightening than any in-your-face CGI disaster porn could ever hope to be.
*** Another example would been when John and his family had finally arrived to the bunkers: When everyone is getting off the vans, a loud noise is heard and a woman points to the sky and mutters “Oh my god..” Sure enough, when John turns to look, ''Clarke is shown about to make impact.'' The sky is shown absolutely glowing with fire from the about-to-hit comet while everyone immediately scrambles to get inside and seal off the bunkers before the shockwave hits.
** John breaks into a house and watches a news feed of footage of someone who unintentionally streamed their own death; while filming asteroids crashing down in the distance, he notices one in the sky that doesn't appear to be moving at all... until it starts getting larger and he realizes it's headed right for him.

** The biggest fragment of Clark is stated to be 50 percent larger than the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. Just the thought that even after 65 million years of evolution in the species populating Earth, humanity is almost just as helpless as the feral reptiles who once dominated the planet in the face of a extinction-event level asteroid can be quite disheartening and mortally scary.
