** Humpty Dumpty, it turns out, is pretty sore at his titular childhood [[BloodBrothers blood brother]] and old friend for abandoning him during a botched robbery years ago; [[spoiler:albeit one which Humpty outright deceived Puss into accidentally committing, which ruined Puss's old life, and Puss only abandoned him once he realized what Humpty did to him. And he makes it known with several of his actions to manipulate Puss in the movie's present, like getting him unconscious in the desert and drawing the attention of buzzards to him.]]

''Puss in Boots'' is a 2011 animated action/adventure film by [[Creator/DreamWorksAnimation [=DreamWorks=]]]. This incarnation of Literature/PussInBoots first appeared in ''WesternAnimation/Shrek2'', and the character's popularity led him to receive [[SpinOff his own feature film]]. A sequel titled ''WesternAnimation/PussInBootsTheLastWish'' premiered in theaters in December 2022.

The Netflix animated series, ''WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfPussInBoots'', expands on Puss' life before the events shown in this movie, while the short film, ''The Three Diablos'' (included in this film's home video release), served as something of an epilogue.

''Puss in Boots'' is a Creator/DreamWorksAnimation film, serving as a prequel to the ''Franchise/{{Shrek}}'' series and telling the {{backstory}} of Puss in Boots, himself inspired by the fairy tale "Literature/PussInBoots". Creator/GuillermoDelToro is executive producer. It seems that Creator/AntonioBanderas is so sexy and awesome even as a cat, that Dreamworks went and made a theatrically released sequel ''just for his character.''

The film shows Puss reunited with an old friend -- Humpty Dumpty (Creator/ZachGalifianakis) who betrayed him once, and who convinces him to steal the [[Literature/JackAndTheBeanstalk magic beans]] from Jack and Jill (who are dangerous outlaws here) so they can climb to the castle in the clouds and steal the goose that lays the golden eggs. Along for the ride is Kitty Softpaws (Creator/SalmaHayek) a ClassyCatBurglar, who becomes Puss's LoveInterest ''and'' [[TheRival Rival.]] As a spin-off, it plays more with the conventions of swashbuckling adventures (appropriate, given that Puss himself is a Franchise/{{Zorro}} {{Expy}}), though not as much as the parodic manner of the ''Shrek'' series.

For that matter, both scenes lead into a SorryILeftTheBGMOn moment.
** "There is only one word for you... [[WesternAnimation/MonstersVsAliens me-WOW."]]
** The garden in the giant's castle looks like [[WesternAnimation/IceAgeDawnOfTheDinosaurs the Jungle of Misery, and the Great Terror's roar in that scene even sounds like Rudy the Baryonyx.]]
** Obvious Jurassic Park allusions with the mother goose (scenes similar to having the T-Rex baby in the car to lead the mother out of town).
** Puss and Humpty's bully in the orphanage is a blue-skinned {{Jerkass}}. He's ''literally'' a [[Music/TheBeatles Blue]] [[WesternAnimation/YellowSubmarine Meanie.]]
** The split-screen shots are a reference to Creator/SergioLeone films. Much of the film's score is also inspired by Leone's films.
** Puss hitting Kitty with a guitar could be a shout-out to [[WesternAnimation/QuickDrawMcGraw El Kabong]].
** The RunningGag cat who goes "Oooh!" thinks it's in a ''Film/CarryOn'' film.
** The Mother Goose's attack on San Ricardo is very similar to ''Film/Godzilla1998'', right down to the final assault on the bridge (and her attacking Humpty's plane from below, just how 'Zilla chomped a helicopter in the movie).
** "His boots are made of soft Corinthian Leather" is a reference to Creator/RicardoMontalban (one of the most prominent Hispanic actors in early Hollywood) and his famously suave endorsements for Chrysler. Montalban also co-starred with Banderas in ''Film/SpyKids3DGameOver'', and it's very likely "San Ricardo" is named in his honor. The use of the reference in relation to Puss' boots is also a CallForward to a similar reference in ''WesternAnimation/Shrek2'', where Donkey says to Puss "Hey man, you wanna get your fine Corinthian footwear and your cat cheeks out of my face?"
** Jack and Jill's little ones are ten little piggies.
** Humpty at one point tightens his golden suit so that only his eyes are showing, and starts mumbling in an incomprehensible way. [[WesternAnimation/SouthPark Kenny, anyone]]?
** "You made the cat angry. [[ComicBook/TheIncredibleHulk You do]] ''[[ComicBook/TheIncredibleHulk not]]'' [[ComicBook/TheIncredibleHulk want to make the cat angry!]]"

* [[spoiler: DisneyDeath: Averted because unlike in the main film, or the first Shrek film, the villain dies for real and isn't shown still alive at the end of the film.]]

* PaperThinDisguise: Humpty attempts to blend in with the golden eggs in a gold bodysuit. Unfortunately the actual eggs are ''barely a foot wide''. The goose buys into it at least once, though.

* SighOfLove: At the beginning, Puss compliments a Persian molly named Rosa, who he flirts with (despite his AccidentalMisnaming of her). When he rides off into the sunset, she sighs, indicating she has a crush on him.
