* BigBad: [[spoiler:Augustus]] is the main villain of the series, but every season has its own main antagonists:
** Season 1: Luciase and Diederich.

* BreakTheCutie: Risa goes through an absolute ''ordeal'' when [[spoiler:personal info is posted online by Landor]]. Not only do all her new contacts delete her, but [[spoiler:Florence's kidnapping]] makes it look like he's left her as well.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Merillian explains to Risa that he captured her because she conned him and stole all his gold. Risa's "huh?" response and completely dumbfounded look all but says she completely forgot about him because she conned so many people.
* CerebusSyndrome: The series starts out light and fun, mainly being gags about Risa and Florence's ComedicSociopathy. It gradually becomes more serious in tone, dealing with the characters' dark pasts and the consequences of their selfish actions. Takes a hard turn into drama when a guy Risa had abused and spurned in-game turns into a murderous stalker.

* ComedicSociopathy: Risa and Florence could as easily be villains as protagonists.
* CheerfulChild: Easen is very chipper and innocent...
* CreepyChild: ...until his dark side manifests. Or he lags or disconnects and ''whatever'' is going on with him takes hold.
* CreepyTwins: Subverted. Allen and Alexandra [[spoiler:Albright]] drop their creepy behavior once Easen admits to lagging past their explanation for Artifact Users.
* CurbStompBattle: Most of Florence's fights against the less prominent players ends up like this. Even after he's reset to level 1 when the game is re-released, he still manages to wipe the floor with Richyten and Merillian with only one spell.
* DamnYouMuscleMemory: When the game comes back up in its new iteration, it has a new interface and controls, which initially give Florence trouble.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: Subverted. The while Magnolia Online's company declares him an imposter, the virtual Augustus Albright proves his identity to [[spoiler:Florence]] by recreating their first meeting from years prior [[spoiler:to his death]].

* TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt: At the end of Season 1, a disgruntled former GM crashes the game and wipes the servers. The company gets it back up and running next season, but everyone has been reduced to level 1 and their gear is gone.
* EmotionlessGirl: Lilith. She doesn't even care much that Winter Moon burned down her guild's hall. [[spoiler:It turns out that much was a lie.]]

However, Florence relies on sheer brute force and his Artifact Power to get out of any situation, while Merillian utilizes craftiness, opportunism, and cunning. Florence also uses fire, while Merillian uses ice.
* {{GIRL}}: Inverted. The muscular, bearded Bob turns out to be a cute girl in RealLife.
* GoldDigger: Risa's primary hat. She takes pride in her ability to charm money and gear out of males and is quite put out when it doesn't work on Florence. [[spoiler:Turns out, she was looking for the attention she lost when her parents broke the bond between her and her older brother.]]
* GreaterScopeVillain: [[spoiler: Augustus Albright, creator of Magnolia Online,]] is responsible for everything that happened in the series.

* IOwnThisTown: You can buy entire towns in-game and become their owners, and the [=NPCs=] will attack and kill anyone who hurts or even touches you. Merillian and Barrett originally intended to buy Shinotobira Town, one of the starter towns; however, Risa works with Landor to undermine them and then steals ownership of the town from him right before he's about to buy it himself.

* KillSteal: When the team leaves Luciase dying, a low-level player, Bob, swoops in and tries to claim the kill. Luciase turns out to have enough mana left to CurbStomp the guy.

* LightIsNotGood: The concept of which Cathedral of Light is based on. They all wear white clothes and pose as saviours, but are actually fanatical maniacs.
* OddFriendship: Who would've thought Lilith-- one of the game's most powerful Player Killers--would team up with CheerfulChild Easen and Bob. She herself wonders how this happened.

* OutGambitted: Merillian tries to combat Florence by becoming a pure ice mage, which Florence counteracts by ''setting the entire forest on fire'', leaving the atmosphere too hot for Merillian to cast anything at all.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: The Artifact Users. Florence in particular, since he only needs 30% of him mana to completely destroy a town.

* PurposefullyOverpowered: Artifact Users. The creator of the game made it so a few people at random would be stronger than everyone else. So far, [[spoiler:Easen and Florence]] have been confirmed to be Artifact Users, while the rest of Winter Moon likely is as well.
* PyroManiac: Florence. Not only has burned down MULTIPLE cities in game, he's offered to burn Risa's older brother IN REAL LIFE. (Granted, Diederich has it coming, but still.)
* RandomlyGifted: Artifact Users. [[spoiler:However, Augustus suggests that Florence may have been targeted]].

* RejectionProjection: After [[spoiler:Landor posts personal info about Risa online as a payback for rejecting him, not only people start bullying her at school, but it also costed her news friends deleting her, also, Florence was deleted in her list as well and can't contact him. She rationalizes him being kidnapped as him abandoning her.]]

* SmugSuper: Florence is confident and contemptuous of pretty much everyone. He has the might to back it up.
* SourOutsideSadInside: Risa is TheFakeCutie and a FilleFatale in her avatar, but in real life she's a desperately depressed, unhappy, and neglected girl.

* TeamMom: Florence’s friend Gideon tries to make peace between him and Risa and keep them on-mission.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Initially, Risa and Florence can barely cooperate, and that only because they've made other enemies. They eventually become genuine friends, though.
* TheDreaded: The Winter Moon guild has become this, as they're now known for burning down cities. (Yes, cities plural.) Florence in particular, as one look at him is enough for potential teammates to hurriedly make excuses and log off.
** Corpse Harvest is renowned for being one of the most dominant player-killing guilds, though they loose a great deal of that reputation when rookie-guild Winter Moon robs and burns down their main base, nearly killing guild master Luciase in the process.

* {{Transplant}}: The game itself was created by the author for another of his webcomic, ''Magnolia Online''. Vanilla and Valerius were also present there.
* TrueCompanions: Winter Moon becomes this. Risa comes to think of Gideon and Florence as her family more than her own brother.

* VitriolicBestBuds: Risa and Florence are this. They constantly bicker and call each other names, but Florence doesn't hesitate to back Risa up when it comes to facing her older brother to the point that he and Gideon meet her in person to talk about it when it first comes up.

When the group needs money for their guild he decides the easiest way to acquire it is to invade the headquarters of the most powerful player-killer guild in the game and clean out their treasury. Luciase, the guild leader, comes very close to killing him before Gideon intervenes.

* WhiteMage: Risa, as a cleric, is group healer. Not that she has the personality that usually goes along with healers. (At least, not in game.)
