** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII'': Rinoa, for the [[AmericansHateTingle Western audience]] at least. When she's not being rescued from monsters, sorceresses, the vastness of space, her poor planning skills, or her poor judgment, she's [[ManicPixieDreamGirl trying to coax Squall out of his shell]] in a way that struck many players as being more irritating and juvenile than the cheerful cuteness she was designed to project. Her eventual CharacterDevelopment and growth into a GameBreaker makes lots of players warm up to her, but to some people, her Sorceress status comes off as in-universe SpecialSnowflakeSyndrome.

I\'ve seen individual members of the Scions be hated for different reasons (mostly Minfillia), but I haven\'t seen anyone yet hating the entire group. Claiming they are \"useless\" basically requires one to ignore the start of the story where the Scions are the one actually pulling most of the weight for the heroes and you just kind of tagging along.

** Most of a Scions are seen as largely useless groups of pixels there to spout words at you to explain why you're off to fight Garuda, entirely without their assistance, for the upteenth time. Y'Shtola is tolerated because she occasionally lifts and finger to help, and Yda and Papalymo are liked because of their interactions being funny, and once again, occasionally making themselves useful. The rest just kind of sit in the corner, talk funny, and collect dust.

* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIV'' has so many characters on the player's side that are almost universally hated, one wonders if it was intentional. Chief among them is Alphinaud, who doesn't do anything but talk, and talk, and goddamn talk, always in a smug and condescending manner. He bosses everyone around, never actually ''does'' anything remotely productive, and is generally a completely useless, insufferable git that ''everyone'' wants to see turn evil just so they can kill the little shit. Making matters worse is that he first appears condescending to his much more likeable sister about how her plans to uncover the truth of the past are unproductive and stupid. It turns out that what she's doing is clearly more important than Alphinaud's space wasting. However, this is (somewhat) fixed in the 'Heavensward' expansion, which has Alphinaud take a more active role in the story - including fighting alongside you.

** Two characters are regularly dismissed as Scrappies: Quina, who was supposed to be the comic relief but came off as useless due to the fact s/he was essentially a [[PowerCopying Blue Mage]] with a gimmicky way of learning spells and a borderline useless [[LimitBreak Trance]] that only contributed toward it instead of making him/her more useful in combat and being repulsive due to looking like a clown with a gigantic tongue and acting like Jar Jar, and Eiko, who was much more useful but even more annoying due to her clingy personality as well as being a BrattyHalfPint. Quina is an interesting case, in that s/he could learn [[MagikarpPower some of the best offensive and defensive abilities]] in the game ([[GuideDangIt provided you know where to look]]), to the point many vets consider him/her the best character in the game. Thus, you have a lot of players who love the hellraiser who can double the party's defenses, heal like a White Mage, and dish out 9999 damage for a measly 8 MP. - but hate the ugly fat thing that contributes nothing to the plot and won't shut up about eating things.

** Relm also gets some unjustified hate. A lot of people generally tend to put her aside because by the time she joins, [[CantCatchUp the player had a lot more time to build up other characters and would usually stick to the people who have way more magic than Relm does]], her Sketch ability is rather [[GameBreakingBug Broken]], or [[GoodBadBug useful only once]]. She actually ''does'' make a very good mage, having better magic stats than even Terra and Celes with proper equipment, but many people prefer to stick with them because they've had them for longer (or because Relm's physical stats are pretty bad).

* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII'': Vaan. While he is the main character of the game, he has little involvement in the story, and becomes nothing more than a TagalongKid shortly into the game.
** His very existence means that the more popular Ashe/Basch/Balthier cannot be the main character. Imagine having your favorite character thrown out of the spotlight by somebody completely pointless? Also if you're tired of the usual pretty-boy RPG hero, Vaan falls right into that cliche ''hard''. Or even worse, realizing that not only are the previously mentioned important players tossed aside, but there are GuestStarPartyMember characters like Reddas and Larsa who contribute more to the plot than Vaan.
** Also, Penelo falls into Scrappy status by association: she is Vaan's best friend and ''also'' shoehorned into the story without actually contributing much at all. It's worth noting, though, that both Vaan and Penelo got RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap in the spin-off games ''Revenant Wings'' and ''Tactics A-2'', in which they got cooler designs AND actual story involvement.
*** Still, it's worth remembering that they get more development in a pseudo-sequel and spin-off than the game they ostensibly star in.

** To a lesser extent, there's [[LethalJokeCharacter Gau]], who was RaisedByWolves. He can become [[DiscOneNuke incredibly powerful]] [[LethalJokeCharacter when raised correctly]], and many FFVI veterans consider Gau one of the best characters to use in [[SelfImposedChallenge Natural magic runs and Low Level games.]] However, training him properly takes quite some time, as does learning to use him correctly, and once you pick a monster for him to mimic, he's stuck like that for the rest of the battle which he spends by randomly using 2 of the attacks assigned to that monster. Thus many less-than-hardcore gamers never bother to use him at all. All in all he could be a mini-BaseBreaker.

%%* Aerith (Aeris for the oldschool) from ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'' has been known to be [[BrokenBase worshiped by some players and attract the most acidic of bile from others]]. In short, she's a BaseBreaker if there ever was one.
* Yuffie is the former TropeNamer for the [[SoLongAndThanksForAllTheGear Wutai Theft]] whose affection points are gained generally by being mean to [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Tifa]], [[MysteriousWaif Aerith]] and [[GayOption Barrett]]. She is also a BrattyHalfPint and rather arrogant about her Ninja status, and her joining conditions is a little GuideDangIt - people will get stuff stolen from them before getting her to join. As of late though, she's been largely RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap due to maturing, though there are many who liked her just fine originally.
** She's also often RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap by virtue of being very, very useful - she has the only LimitBreak besides Aerith ([[AndZoidberg and Cait Sith]]) that can heal the entire party, and her offensive Limit Breaks are nothing to sneeze at either. She, like Aerith, is a BaseBreaker.

** Lightning to most ''Versus XIII'' fans. Since most focus from [[FanNickname Sqeenix]] nowadays is on her trilogy, fans are angry at her for *quote* [[SpotlightStealingSquad getting in the way of its development and release]] *unquote*. Considering how ''Versus'' is shunted to the side in favour of her games in most interviews it's not hard to see why the hate is there.
** Now that ''Versus XIII'' is officially ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXV'', they won't need to grumble as much about it being shunted anymore. Especially since the trailer announcing it in E3 2013 also implied that it was "a world in the Versus Epic."
** As a matter of fact, even the very patient and rational-minded part of those fans isn't safe even although they are kinda okay with her (deep down they'll admit to some hatred but they at least play her games or read about the story on Final Fantasy Wiki if they don't). These fans (either neutral to, okay with or fans of Lightning) are more frustrated/jealous/irritated with the fact that while her games get regular news and updates while ''Versus'' tends to go through news blackouts. The average response from them is a "Yes, yes. Lightning has a new game. What about ''Versus''?" with many arguing they'd be okay with waiting if more information was given on the game, if Sqeenix explained about XIV earlier, more gameplay trailers are shown or releasing ''VideoGame/{{Final Fantasy Type0}}'' to tide them over.

** One of the major problems players have with the likes of Alphinaud and Minfilia stems from the fact that they're diplomats in a combat-centered MMORPG. Since what they do doesn't have any effect other than giving exposition to the player or pointing them in the right direction, it's easy to tag them as "useless." However, this is really more an excuse for Minfilia, who is explicitly stated to be more akin to a politician or diplomat than an adventurer or scholar like the other Scions. She even holds the distinction of being the only Scion not carrying a weapon.

** Edward, a bard (the [[TropeNamer original]] SpoonyBard) has a major HeroicBSOD after his fiancee and parents are killed and not reacting in a way fans approved (apparently it's ridiculous to be shattered after the sudden death of your loved ones). He does happen to be very useful at one point [[spoiler:playing the Twin Harp to enable you to use metal weapons against the Dark Elf]], but that's not enough for the fanbase. *''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIV'' has so many characters on the player's side that are almost universally hated, one wonders if it was intentional.
**Slightly less aggravating but still widely hated is Minfilia, leader of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, an organization dedicated to saving Eorzea from threat ranging from foreign invasion to angry gods given form. While she has a much more pleasant demeanor than the smug Alphinaud, she ''never'' shuts up, shoehorns "must needs" into every sentence, and generally doesn't do anything to actively save Eorzea from any threat besides telling the player to go solve the problem. So much so that the item text on her "minion" item reads "unlike her 'real' counterpart, this doll actually accompanies you on your adventures.
**Most of a Scions are seen as largely useless groups of pixels there to spout words at you to explain why you're off to fight Garuda, entirely without their assistance, for the upteenth time. Y'Shtola is tolerated because she occasionally lifts and finger to help, and Yda and Papalymo are liked because of their interactions being funny, and once again, occasionally making themselves useful. The rest just kind of sit in the corner, talk funny, and collect dust.

These fans (either neutral to, okay with or fans of Lightning) are more frustrated/jealous/irritated with the fact that while her games get regular news and updates while ''Versus'' tends to go through news blackouts. The average response from them is a "Yes,yes.

** [[ReplacementScrappy Noel and Serah]] in VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII-2 . Noel for getting bucketloads of screentime in the trailers, and Serah for referring to Snow (Her ''fiance'') as a "friend" in the trailer, and because fans see her as a replacement of the main protagonist, Lightning (the fact that Serah is, in fact, Lightning's sister; the fact that she seems to have the exact same paradigm roles (Commando, Ravager, and Medic); The fact that her mission is described as being exactly the same as Lightning's ("Save her sister"...though really, what could Serah do to help a supposed Warrior Goddess?); the fact that she seems to have a suspiciously similar weapon to Lightning (instead of a gunblade, it's a swordbow); etc...probably doesn't help very much. It also probably didn't help that they described Lightning as the main protagonist for the first six months and then suddenly show Serah for 98% of the trailers and announced that Lightning would only make brief playable appearances). Noel...well...he just has the misfortune of being described as the replacement for the original main cast.

* Fans started a Scrappydom ''[[VideoGame/FinalFantasyI all the way back]]'', with the Black Belt/Master class. * ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyIV'':
** Edward, a bard (the [[TropeNamer original]] SpoonyBard) has a major HeroicBSOD after his fiancee and parents are killed and not reacting in a way fans approved (apparently it's ridiculous to be shattered after the sudden death of your loved ones). He does happen to be very useful at one point [[spoiler:playing the Twin Harp to enable you to use metal weapons against the Dark Elf]], but that's not enough for the fanbase. The DS re-release did tweak his abilities, making him much more useful.
** [[GlassCannon Tellah]] also has quite a hatedom for having an extremely low mana pool [[spoiler:which prevents him from casting Meteor before the plot-appropriate moment]].
** [[TheChick Rosa]] has [[NeverLiveItDown never lived down]] her two moments of being a DamselInDistress, and they have painted her in that mold despite her being freed about a third of the way into the game. She also suffers backlash from [[HoYay Kain/Cecil shippers]], and being OvershadowedByAwesome with Rydia, who is seen as a far more interesting character with a deeper backstory and more impressive abilities (namely SummonMagic). At best among most fans, Rosa isn't hated, she's simply seen as a bland and boring character compared to the rest of the cast.
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI'' has a few, a result from having LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters:
** Umaro the Yeti is widely hated for being a Berserker, a job class from the series where the character has no control over and does nothing but attack. Also supported by the fact that Umaro speaks [[TheUnintelligible complete gibberish]].
** There's also [[CrutchCharacter Cyan]], a {{Samurai}} spends most of the game moping (though it's justified; his ENTIRE NATION was killed early on), speaks in YeOldeButcheredeEnglishe (that other characters openly mock), has rather low magic stats in battle, and his special ability, Bushido, takes forever to charge up.
** '''EVERYBODY''' hates the [[BrattyHalfPint spoiled rich kid]] at the Jidoor auction house for making you waste time with him making his father buy him useless items like a scale model ship or a robot imp. Sometimes ''up to ten times in a row''. Especially aggravating if you're playing the [[UpdatedRerelease Advance version]] and just want to get the goddamn Excalipoor.
%%* Aerith (Aeris for the oldschool) from ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'' has been known to be [[BrokenBase worshiped by some players and attract the most acidic of bile from others]]. Whether it's the allegations of CanonSue-dom, the timeless LoveTriangle bitterness, or just the [[PlayerPunch gamer's ache]] from having a free healer ripped from you at an unexpected moment, those who hate Aerith hate her ''hard''.
** She's also often RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap by virtue of being very, very useful - she has the only LimitBreak besides Aeris ([[AndZoidberg And Cait Sith]]) that can heal the entire party, and her offensive Limit Breaks are nothing to sneeze at either. She, like Aeris, is a BaseBreaker.
** Cait Sith is a very silly [[TeamPet puppet]] that forces his way into the party, his attacks are somewhat luck-based. His betrayal is shockingly EasilyForgiven. His "HeroicSacrifice" seems cool at first, but a few seconds later is proven rather... overdramatic in execution. Possibly RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap by virtue of [[spoiler: actually being Reeve]] and helping lighten up the dreary ''DirgeOfCerberus''.
** Genesis. As if [[AuthorAppeal being Tetsuya Nomura's gushy love letter to]] {{Gackt}} wasn't enough, in every game he's shoehorned into, he comes across as a bad poetry-spouting, obsessive-compulsive VillainSue who can't take a hint every time someone beats him senseless. He literally drops into ''the'' iconic scene of the infamous "Nibelheim flashback" from ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'' just to crap it up with more horrible meaningless poetry and douchiness. The scene is saved by dint of Sephiroth practically telling him to screw off.
* [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII Rinoa]]. [[AmericansHateTingle At least in America]]. Partly due to shippers, partly due to her being comatose, possessed, or otherwise needing rescue for the most of the game, and partly due to one of her early character moments having her insist on acting on a bad idea, thus forcing the player to do one of the most irritating dungeon crawls of the game. By the end of it, she's possibly [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap saved]] by merit of [[spoiler: becoming a GameBreaker sorceress.]]
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyIX''
** Two characters are regularly dismissed as Scrappies: Quina, who was supposed to be the comic relief but came off as useless due to the fact s/he was essentially a [[PowerCopying Blue Mage]] with a gimmicky way of learning spells and a borderline useless [[LimitBreak Trance]] that only contributed toward it instead of making him/her more useful in combat and being repulsive due to looking like a clown with a gigantic tongue, and Eiko, who was much more useful but even more annoying due to her clingy personality as well as being a BrattyHalfPint.
*** Quina gets some leeway as his/her Frog Jump ability is easy to get and is powered up through a mini-game. Granted it takes forever to get it leveled up all the way, but having an attack that consistently does 9999 damage is really useful.
** On the villains' side, Zorn and Thorn, Queen Brahne's MonsterClown CreepyTwins henchmen, also annoy a lot of players for their bizarre mannerisms and their tendency to repeat each other constantly. On the plus side, they end up {{Not So Harmless Villain}}s and provide a good boss battle.
*** Except they keep giving a status effect that won't let you gain AP from them, which is vital for permanently learning skills.
** In recent years, Freya Crescent has gained a disproportionate amount of hate simply for being a rat-woman who attracts attention from the the FurryFandom.
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'':
** It seems that [[BrokenBase 50% of all the people who have played]] it are left with a searing pathological, if not psychotic hatred of the protagonist, Tidus, due to his endless whining, ridiculous outfit, and generally annoying voice. Not to mention the laughing scene, though technically Yuna talked him into that (and it was ''supposed'' to sound forced and awkward).
** Seymour also tends to be fan's least favorite villain. Largely due to the fact that [[RecurringBoss no matter how many times you hand him his ass, he ''just won't die'']].
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXI'':
** Chains of Promathia expansion has the Chebukki triplets; three of the most annoying [[TastesLikeDiabetes Tarutaru]] in the game. While they are necessary [[spoiler: in the final confrontation against the BigBad Promathia]], many players felt it would be worth failure [[spoiler: and the destruction of the universe]] just to see them die instead.
** Also, there's the percieved JerkSue CreatorsPet Prishe.
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII''
** Hope Estheim was already disliked long before the game's release ([[http://gameinformer.com/games/final_fantasy_xiii/b/xbox360/archive/2009/09/30/preview.aspx even Game Informer magazine took a dis on him at one point]]). This might have something to do with his looking exactly like Tidus and Vaan. Now the game is out, and the hatedom is pretty much set.
*** Although, this only seems to apply to the first game. He's actually considered to be an EnsembleDarkhorse in XIII-2 due to being older and wiser (thus making a [[FanPreferredCouple Lightning/Hope pairing]] more plausible) and being the leader of the Academy, which essentially makes him ''[[TookALevelInBadass leader of mankind.]]'' There's a bit of a BrokenBase when it comes to the third game, in which he's back to being a kid (although with the mind of his older incarnation).
** Vanille and Snow. Vanille's relentless childish demeanor or rather act and high pitched voice get on a lot of people's nerves and Snow's every line consists of the words "hero" "Serah" and "protect".
What about ''Versus''?" with many arguing they'd be okay with waiting if more information was given on the game, if Sqeenix explained about XIV earlier, more gameplay trailers are shown or releasing ''VideoGame/{{Final Fantasy Type0}}'' to tide them over.
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyTactics'':
** Algus Sadalfus is clearly [[HateSink intended to be hated]], but he's also technically on your side for most of his screen time. A perfect example of AristocratsAreEvil, he spends his time as a guest character doing nothing but showing contempt for everyone not of noble blood - which includes several members of your party - until he finally crosses the MoralEventHorizon by [[spoiler:casually killing Tetra when an enemy tried to use her as a HumanShield]]. He is hated so much that he is almost guaranteed to appear in any "Most hated video game characters" poll, especially since he is from a ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' title. The PSP version of the game includes an extra stage in which Algus comes BackFromTheDead just so the player can have the pleasure of killing him a second time.
** The [[MagikarpPower Rafa]] / [[SpoonyBard Malak]] sibling duo is so absolutely ''useless'' in battle, they've earned nothing but scorn from game players. This is exacerbated by the presence of [[GameBreaker game-breaking]] characters like T.G. Cid, Agrias, and Meliadoul, as well as Rafa's [[LeeroyJenkins suicidal rush towards Assassin-type foes]] in the missions where the player is supposed to [[EscortMission protect her from getting killed]].
* Montblanc the moogle in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyTacticsAdvance''. While lots of people hate him, only a few of them actually hate him for his lack of character. [[TierInducedScrappy Everyone else hates him just because statistically, he is a very poor magic user]] and he starts off as a Black Mage. You can't boot him since the game won't let you, so most people just [[VideoGameCrueltyPotential kill him off in a Jagd]].
