Needless to say, both of those options would have been better than what ends up happening.

* BothSidesHaveAPoint: While both Nancy and Jonathan are being shortsighted with regards to the other's perspective in their argument, both have valid points. Jonathan accurately calls Nancy out on not understanding that the firing is a bigger blow to him because he doesn't come from a rich family like she does and needed the money more. Nancy makes the equally accurate point that her treatment at the paper was humiliating and burdensome in ways that his wasn't due to the newsroom's sexist atmosphere and his dismissals of her feelings about it are not that different from the staff's attitude.

* ZergRush: Seems to be part of the Mind Flayer's plan. It knows that Eleven can stop it with her powers, so it's creating a small army of altered people, more than she could possibly hope to defeat.

Played straight by Eleven when Billy attacks Mike, and Eleven throws him ''through a brick wall'' and this is despite the two being broken up at the time, hinting that the break up is not that serious and that El just wants to teach Mike a lesson about lying to her.

* DareToBeAwesome: Karen's speech to Nancy after she gets fired and talks about her own struggles with the StayInTheKitchen attitude.

* ICouldaBeenAContender: It's implied that Karen wanted to make her mark out on the world when she was younger, but she was subjected to the misogynistic attitudes of their time and place, and gave up. She urges Nancy to pursue this story over and over.

* InnocentlyInsensitive: Nancy towards Jonathan. After getting them both fired, she tries to brush off losing their jobs like it's no big deal, but Jonathan reminds her that, unlike her, he actually needed that job because he doesn't have a father who makes six figures a year.
