* SadisticChoice: A rare heroic example occurs when the heroes face off against D'Arby. The gambler's already taken Polnareff and Joseph's souls and makes Jotaro bet his in a game of poker, and he's already lost half of it in the previous round. Jotaro then bluffs D'Arby by using Star Platinum's super speed to light a cigarette and get a glass of juice, making him think Jotaro could have swapped his hand for a better one. Then he not only bets the rest of his soul, he bets Avdol's, ''Kakyoin's'' (who's in the hospital at the moment), and '''''his own mother's''''', all to force D'Arby into one of these; since he doesn't have enough soul chips to match Jotaro's bet, D'Arby has to wager ''the secret of DIO's stand'' to stay in the game. If he calls Jotaro's raise and loses, he'll have to tell them-- which means DIO will kill him. But if he folds, they'll likely beat the information out of him anyway. The stakes of such a bet, the idea that Jotaro could both outmaneuver AND outcheat the self-proclaimed "greatest gambler in the world", and Jotaro's sheer level of confidence and faith in his own cards when he won't even look at his hand all frighten D'Arby to the point where he becomes a gibbering wreck who ''physically can't bring himself to call Jotaro's raise and passes out on his feet''.

This is explained in supplementary materials; the Hermit Purple-like Stand is actually Jonathan's Stand, which Dio has some control over due to possessing his body.

** Early on, Dio is shown using a Purple Hermit-esque stand. However when we see what his actual stand is, it is completely different.

** Additionally early on, its mentioned that restrained breathing makes manifesting a Stand difficult, suggesting that they were merely an extension of Hamon. This is dropped later on, as several characters are shown with damaged breathing or heart processes that can use their Stands just fine (such as Jotaro stopping and starting his own heart with his Stand).
