* The consititutional conventions of postwar UsefulNotes/JapanesePoliticalSystem often require this. The Constitution of 1947 removed any reserve powers from the Emperor and clearly stated he may not interfere with politics. This is usually taken to mean when he is asked to give his assent under his constitutional powers, the assent ''must'' be given before midnight of the day the Cabinet or the Diet requests the assent. This is because most things of this nature are laws and appointments, and most of them are assumed to take effect the day Imperial Assent is granted (unless otherwise given a date). This means the document gets effective one day later if he signed after midnight--and ''that's'' interferrance. While the Palace is very close to the Diet and the Office of the Prime Minister, and Japan has a system where the Emperor may nominate another member of the Imperial family to give assent, this convention means hell for assistants at the Diet and the Kantai if the Emperor is on a domestic tour. They are required to immediately take the train or the plane to get where the Emperor is currently staying so that the necessary assent can be granted on the same day.

* This figured into the death of King George V of the United Kingdom. To give him a more dignified death, his doctor lethally injected him with a mix of cocaine and morphine (though George V didn't agree and cursed out the doctor for his trouble). This death would be the one which appeared in the ''Times'', which had a midnight deadline. Unfortunately, the doctor nearly screwed up here--George V was killed in Sandringham at 11:20, where the clocks were set back half an hour, meaning he actually died at 11:50--ten minutes before the ''Times'' deadline. George's successor, Edward VIII, was ''furious'' when he found out and promptly switched all the clocks in Sandringham back to regular time.
