No matter what the character does, no matter how noble his intentions, they just cannot get the respect of his peers. It's not that they deserve to be unhappy. They are a genuinely NiceGuy who in some other story would be loved and respected. But since they are in a comedy ensemble, they're role is to suffer to keep the humor rolling, even if the audience finds them sympathetic.
