While it's not the only race to do so, the apparent inability of its members to consider alternatives, as well as the fact that they are unusually brutal to their chattel and eat them when they're no longer useful, has made them universally loathed.

* ''Literature/SorryBro'': UsefulNotes/TheArmenianGenocide comes up in the book multiple times, as it's set in the Bay Area Armenian-American community. Nareh's tired of hearing about it since she thinks Armenians have spent so much time on this. Erebuni however says it's necessary as the Genocide still isn't acknowledged by either the US or Turkey. She's an educator who organizes lectures about the Genocide. Ereduni frequently makes references to it, if not always explicitly, and Nareh feels she brings the Genocide into everything in one way or another. When she sees how vehement some Turks are in flatly denying it and saying the ''Armenians'' had committed genocide against ''them'', Nareh gains newfound respect for Ereduni doing these talks. In her own family, it was almost never spoken about, whereas Ereduni's great-grandparents (who were [[GenocideSurvivor survivors]]) made a point of documenting their experience for posterity. When an Armenian-American Representative proposes a law that will recognize the genocide, this becomes a big story that Nareh covers as a reporter.

Everyone from UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler on down used euphemistic language to refer to these campaigns, with the anti-Jewish element eventually coming under the term "die Endlösung der Judenfrage" ("the Final Solution to the Jewish Question"). In early 1941, Hitler was also keen to stress that the coming campaign against the Soviet Union was to be "[[GuiltFreeExterminationWar a war of annihilation]]" (Vernichtungskrieg) in which the Soviet peoples would ultimately be destroyed. To ensure that it would be, the Wehrmacht heartily agreed and issued a series of decrees (on 'foraging', against [[ThePoliticalOfficer commissars]], and against 'bandits') and starved millions of Soviet prisoners to death in concentration camps, while SS ''Einsatzgruppen'' operating in the rear areas exterminated hundreds of thousands of Jews and other 'undesirables' in mass executions. This barbaric style of warfare ended up [[StupidEvil hurting the Germans badly]], as this gave the Soviets and other victims of the occupation more than enough motivation to fight to the death.
* While the Holocaust may be the TropeNamer, the term "Final Solution" was previously used in the American government's attempts to [[http://english.stackexchange.com/a/365582/115108 eradicate/assimilate]] the Native population in the 19th and early 20th centuries, which in fact directly inspired Nazi Germany's Generalplan Ost (as Adolf Hitler himself boasted on numerous occasions). Seeking to carry out the policies of the earlier colonies to their full extent with the doctrine of UsefulNotes/ManifestDestiny, the United States deliberately sought to "depopulate" the American Indians from their land by violently forcing those who acquiesced onto concentrated reservations where they could be forcibly assimilated and openly exterminating the rest. The trend was set by President UsefulNotes/AndrewJackson in his 1830 Indian Removal Act and the following Trail of Tears (with 15-20,0000 natives killed by the forced march alone), and continued well into the rest of the century. Discussions specifically employing the phrase "the Indian Question/Problem" and its "final solution" in the United States go back to at least 1869.
** Perhaps the most severe example was what is now known as the California Genocide. While the US Federal and State authorities only outright massacred the native tribes they could not violently subjugate or forcibly relocate in most other places, in California, a policy of total extermination without even the pretense of leaving survivors was put in place. Systematic killings by both the state and private citizens were constant (with the latter even being directly monetarily rewarded in some cases) and mass enslavement of American Indians was ''de facto'' legalized. This resulted in up to 90% of the American Indian population in the state (around 134,000 people) being killed.
** Per the modern definition of genocide, even the forced assimilation policies qualify. It's ''cultural'' genocide, with the slogan being to "kill the Indian and save the man". Native youths were forbidden to follow their customs, practice their own religions nor speak any language but English, with severe and often fatal punishment issued otherwise. Many died from this abuse in the boarding schools of Canada and the United States, with the exact death toll still being researched (though the former's is confirmed to be well into the thousands). Even those who survived were still scarred deeply. Similar policies were also leveled against the indigenous people of Australia, some of which are even in effect today. Forced sterilizations of Native American women were also carried out, often without their knowledge (for instance while undergoing unrelated surgery). The mixed race people of Australia were targeted for the same policies, and the government attempted to prevent them from reproducing with full-blooded Aboriginals so a distinct group wouldn't form. Since then, they became known as the "Stolen Generations".
* The colonial army of UsefulNotes/ImperialGermany committed the first genocide of the 20th century against the Herero and Namaqua people in what is now Namibia, killing at least 80,000. Overall, the population of both was at least halved through mass executions, starvation, and forced labor. Medical experiments illegal under German domestic law were conducted upon children. There's a causal link between Imperial German 'Colonial Activities' and Nazi German policies in its occupied territory in Poland and the USSR, where the Holocaust first began and then escalated to its final form as a series of administrative processes. Lothar von Trotha, the general in charge of the genocide, also sounds eerily similar to Hitler's rants in his remarks concerning the killings.
* Also, naturally, all of the many attempted genocides that the 20th century witnessed, such as the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 (radical Hutus murdering the Tutsis and any Hutu with a conscience), and [[UsefulNotes/TheArmenianGenocide the Armenian Genocide]] in 1915 (Turks trying to kill all Armenians in their territory, and succeeding in exiling the survivors… don't talk about this in modern-day Turkey if you wish to stay out of jail), along with the related Assyrian and Greek Genocides.
--> ''"[[AppealToObscurity Who remembers the Armenians?]]"'' —UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler, August 22, 1939
* The Soviet Union gives us Decossackization, which began under Lenin and continued under Stalin. This policy was designed to wipe out the UsefulNotes/{{Cossacks}}[[note]]Self-governing, militaristic communities (or "hosts") residing mainly in southern Russia and Ukraine[[/note]] as a distinct culture, out of fears they could become a pillar of counter-revolution. This included mass killings, though forced resettlement accounted for much of the campaign. The campaign was essentially successful and resulted in the Cossack "hosts" ceasing to exist as nations. Since the 1980s, however, there have been some efforts by descendants of Cossacks to revive their identity and traditions.
* Speaking of UsefulNotes/JosefStalin, he, like Hitler, was notorious for his genocidal acts of mass murder. One of the most infamous of these was [[UsefulNotes/TheHolodomor the Holodomor]], a famine he engineered/allowed to happen that killed millions of Ukrainians. This was far from the only act of genocide he committed: he also targeted Kazakhs, Chechens, Volga Germans, and Crimean Tatars, among others. Stalin also attempted to exterminate entire social classes, such as the ''kulaks'' (independent Ukrainian and Russian farmers, whom Soviet propaganda demonized as being obese, decadent, and the cause of all the poor peasants' ills), as well as all political opposition. These campaigns are part of the reason that extermination based on social class or political ideology was not included in the official UN definition of genocide: the definition was written by the victorious Allies of WWII, of which Josef Stalin was one.
* Decades before the Bolsheviks rose to power, UsefulNotes/ImperialRussia carried out the Circassian Genocide, which saw the vast majority of the Circassian people of the northern Caucasus expelled to the Ottoman Empire at gunpoint, and most of the remainder massacred; by the end, over ninety percent of the Circassians were disappeared from Russia so their lands could be given to Russian and Cossack settlers. Disturbingly, the primary reason wasn't because the semi-nomadic Circassians were any more resistant to Saint Petersburg's rule than any other restive minority in the Empire's borders, but because, in the words of the general Rostislav Fadeyev, [[EvilIsEasy "re-education of a people is a centuries-long process" and it'd be more efficient to "exterminate half the Circassian people in order to compel the other half to lay down their arms"]].
* UsefulNotes/MaoZedong was a proponent of "classicide", which was particularly prevalent during the Communist Party's first land reform campaign of 1949-1953. This involved the violent extermination of the entire landlord class and the redistribution of their lands to the peasantry. Many of these were executed in "struggle sessions", a form of torture where authorities induced locals to participate in humiliating, injuring, and often killing landlords in public spectacles. Estimates of those killed range from several hundred thousand at the lowest to five million at the highest. Ironically, the peasants would soon lose their newly distributed land after the Communist Party collectivized agriculture and placed all farmland under state ownership. These atrocities also occurred in North Vietnam.
* UsefulNotes/ImperialJapan also had a borderline genocidal policy adopted in China known as ''Sanko Sakusen'' or the "Three Alls Policy", the "Three Alls" being to ''Kill All, Burn All, Loot All''. It was a scorched earth policy implemented in retaliation for the Hundred Regiments Offensive by Communist forces in North China. As a result of this policy, Imperial Japanese forces had killed more than 2.7 million Chinese civilians, with the event having been described as greatly surpassing the Nanking massacre, not only in numbers, but in brutality as well.
** The Japanese also conducted the ''Sook Ching'' which was a systematic purge of "hostile elements" and "undesirables" in Singapore. These purges and massacres specifically targeted the ethnic Chinese in Singapore and lead to tens of thousands of them being killed as a result.
* UsefulNotes/JuliusCaesar himself claimed to have exterminated several Gallic, Germanic, and British tribes in his book ''The Gallic War'', but with little other primary documentation, it's difficult to say whether or not this is merely fanciful boasting. Generally, he preferred diplomacy over mass murder.
* This trope suffuses much of Roman history. Notably, the populations of Corinth and Carthage (both in 146 BC) were massacred almost entirely (with the few survivors sold into slavery) and the cities themselves were razed to the ground. This was about as close as it came to the spirit of things in the Roman Republic.
* In ancient times, the successful siege of a resisting city sometimes meant wiping out all of the adult males and the enslavement of the women and children (bear in mind, this only happened if the city resisted and fought to the end. If the city surrendered, it would be subjected to far lighter treatment, proportionate to the length of the siege; a city that had surrendered as soon as the enemy showed up would usually be spared everything but the tiniest bit of looting, while a city that put up a fight for a while before giving up might expect to see a day or two of the RapePillageAndBurn treatment.).
* The Mongols used this as a tactic: they would kill most of the people in the cities that fought them, leaving only enough survivors to spread the stories about their atrocities. This gave nearby cities serious incentive to surrender outright.
** When the Mongols entered Baghdad, it was the jewel of the Islamic empire, crossroads of three continents, and renowned as a center of trade, culture, and learning. They didn't call it the Fertile Crescent to be ironic. Long story short, none of that still applies. In more detail: the Mongols depopulated the city so thoroughly it didn't recover its 1258 population until the mid '''19'''60s, destroyed the Grand Library until the Tigris river ran black with ink and red with blood, destroyed the millennia-old irrigation network that made the Fertile Crescent fertile, and generally did everything they could to turn one of the most advanced cities on the planet into [[CrapsackWorld what we now think of Baghdad]] even 700 years later.
** It is estimated that the Mongols exterminated 90% of Iran's population. For comparison, Hitler killed less than 40% of the Jews in Europe. In total, they killed between 30 million and 60 million people at a time when the global population was around 400 million.
* The ancient Assyrians used the same tactic as the Mongol example above — usually leaving extensive stelae with lurid descriptions of the shocking details.
* UsefulNotes/TimurTheLame, a prince of a Turkicized Mongol people and a Chinggisid by marriage, also engaged in scary exterminations (he shared the Mongol penchant for [[NothingButSkulls giant heaps of skulls]]).
* Many of the initial conflicts in the mid 1500s through early 1600s between European settlers and the native North and South Americans in the came down to this; it wasn't uncommon for the entirety of small settlements on either side to be completely wiped out. King Philip's War is probably the best known of these and was by far the bloodiest, with 12 towns totally sacked and one tenth of all military-aged men killed on the New Englanders' side, while even more of the Wampanoags and their allies were massacred publicly or captured and sold into slavery.
* Subverted in terms of historiography. Many scribes very deliberately exaggerated how much damage a war caused, often using such high numbers in their accounts that the opposing force would be practically exterminated, which would be at odds with the later wars that occurred. The very fact that they felt exaggerating how many of the enemy they slaughtered was good is itself chilling however.
* When the Maori invaded the Chatham Islands, they systematically murdered at least 10% of the native Moriori population, some by torture, then enslaved the remaining people and prevented them from marrying or having children with each other. As if genocide needed to be any more horrific, the Moriori lived by a code of absolute non-violence and made no attempt to fight back. They refused to give it up [[SuicidalPacifism even in the face of certain death]]. Even worse: the Moriori were originally Maori who [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere had tired of the violent, militaristic Maori society and left to form their own, non-violent society]]. Their own cousins came later and wiped out many of them. By 1930, no full-blooded Moriori even existed-they were absorbed completely.
* During the UsefulNotes/NationalReorganizationProcess, the Argentine military attempted what would be properly termed "politicide" against the nation's leftist elements, with the goal of a Final Solution to the Communist problem. Up to 30,000 people were tortured and killed, most of them guilty of nothing more than being more to the left of the hard-right junta. As part of [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Condor Operation Condor,]] many victims of the military dictatorship met similar agonizing fates.
* UsefulNotes/IdiAmin committed acts of ethnic cleansing against the Acholi and Lango peoples during his rule over Uganda, first purging them from the military and then targeting civilians. This was partly because they made up a large part of the support base for the previous dictator, Milton Obote, who Amin had overthrown, and partly due to Amin's anti-Christian sentiment (both ethnic groups were largely Christian).
* The [[UsefulNotes/{{Cambodia}} Cambodian Genocide]] lasted from 1975 until 1979,[[note]]and even then lingered on on a very small scale until just before the Nineties[[/note]] and is widely considered the second-worst genocide of the 20th century (let's just say, when North Vietnam and even ''China'' [[EvenEvilHasStandards pan their humans rights record]], you know it's bad). It all began when the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot and initially backed by communist Vietnam, took over Cambodia. Within his just-over 5 years of absolute power,[[note]]As has been said, while his actual rule of Cambodia lasted nearly 6 years, the KR still had rule of a small territory up north and were recognized as "official" for many years[[/note]] he had turned Cambodia into an 8 million man company (by the end 6 million), made rice the only legal food, forced people to eat at only designated times, made it illegal to even ''believe'' in gods, made it illegal to be part of the "intelligentsia" (doctors, teachers, people with degrees, even people who even wore ''glasses''--people with glasses could be literate), evacuated entire cities (including the hospitals), and finally forced ''everyone'' (even the disabled or terminally ill) to farm for the rest of their lives. A lot of ethnic cleansing was carried out because Pol Pot wanted a "pure", rural-agricultural Khmer nation-state. Foreigners were killed, ethnic minorities were killed (with the country's Vietnamese population suffering especially cruel treatment, especially as relations with Vietnam deteriorated), anyone who was religious was killed, old government members were killed (the royal prince joined the KR, so was spared), and people who couldn't farm (accused of "sabotage") were killed. Also noteworthy in that unlike other genocides (namely the Holocaust), the KR did absolutely nothing to remove evidence of what they did and to this day their biggest prison, "[[TheGulag the S-21]]" (a former high school[[note]]Part of Pol Pot's campaign to kill off "intelligentsia" was by closing all the schools down and banning education. Some of them, such as this one, became prisons.[[/note]]), is now the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and is filled with photos of actual tortures/executions, paintings by a survivor, mug shots of the condemned, and literal piles upon piles of ''skulls''. It is no wonder that of over 20,000 prisoners, only 12 survived.
* In the late 1980s, UsefulNotes/SaddamHussein ordered what is now known as the Anfal genocide against Iraq's Kurdish population in retaliation for a rebellion in Iraqi Kurdistan. The genocide was organized and led by Ali Hassan al-Majid, who was known as "Chemical Ali" for his use of DeadlyGas (which the United States knowingly supplied him with). As many as 182,000 Kurds may have been killed.
* The Yugoslav Civil Wars featured war crimes by all sides, and deliberate genocide on the part of the Serbian and Croatian governments, with UsefulNotes/SlobodanMilosevic's Serbia (and its clients in the Republika Srpska) going the extra mile to ensure the "ethnic cleansing" of their territory.
* Recent archaeological evidence suggests a genocide may have been perpetrated between two groups of Anasazi people of the Southwestern United States around 800 CE, possibly as a result of th social upheaval following a cataclysmic climate-shift in the region at the time.
* People easily forget that pathogens, be they bacteriological or virological, are living things.[[note]]Viruses are barely classified as life, but they are still self-replicating DNA/RNA chains.[[/note]] When scientists eliminate a disease, they are voluntarily causing the extinction of a species. Which no one bats an eye at because said species are considered lower than insects and other pests - which people also freely use the Final Solution against when infesting any place populated by humans.
* Multiple Darfuri ethnic groups have been subjected to genocidal atrocities since 2003, perpetrated by the Sudanese government and its proxies in the Janjaweed militia groups. The perpetrators became internationally notorious for their acts of rape.
* To curb Bengali nationalism, in 1971, the Pakistani military and Islamist paramilitaries allied with it carried out a genocide in Bangladesh (at the time a part of Pakistan), killing at least 200,000 people. Indian military intervention ended the genocide by the end of the year before it could get any worse.
* In 1804, Haitian revolutionary-turned-dictator Jean-Jacques Dessalines ordered that the better part of Haiti's remaining population of whites be put to death, justifying it as being for the sake of national security. By the end of the massacre, the white Haitians were practically eradicated except for a few exceptions like Poles (who Dessalines considered kindred spirits to the formerly-enslaved Africans, in light of the recent partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth), Germans and any white women that agreed to marry one of Dessalines' men. Dessalines made no attempt to hide this genocide from the world, and the "Horrors of St. Domingo" would be used to justify the continuation of slavery in the Southern United States and Imperial Brazil for decades to come, by claiming a successful slave revolt there would also result in them (or that simply freeing the slaves might).
* The [[UsefulNotes/TheWarOnTerror Islamic State of Syria and Iraq]] is guilty of several genocides against native groups in their domains, including Eastern Christians, Shia Muslims (regarded as [[NoTrueScotsman "non-Muslims" by many fanatical Sunnis]]), and the Yazidis, with the last one being singled out as their most hated group because the Yazidis revere a peacock angel that is similar to the Iblis (the Devil in Islam) and ISIS regards them as "sorcerers". Not only did they not even try to hide or deny the Yazidi persecution as with many of their online supporters had, but the group actually ''boasted'' about it, attempted to use it as ''recruitment tool'' by offering female Yazidi as [[SexSlave concubines]] to anyone that joined them, and rebuked their supporters for trying to whitewash them. Considering their [[TakeOverTheWorld aims]], they would have expanded the final solution to anything that didn't fit with their doctrine.
* During the 1750s, the Qing dynasty carried out a campaign of extermination against the nomadic Dzungar people. Some scholars estimate that approximately 80% of the Dzungar population was wiped out.
* Under Menelik II, the Ethiopian military perpetrated genocidal atrocities against certain ethnic groups considered overly recalcitrant or just "in the way", such as the Dizi and the Oromo. However, since some of these wars coincided with a major famine caused by a rinderpest epidemic, there's debate over how much of the population reduction can really be attributed to deliberate action by the government.
* Between October 2002 and January 2003, rebel forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo who sought to seize control of the North Kivu province carried out an attempt at systematically exterminating the Mbuti pygmies native to the area. Despite the campaign only lasting four months, between 60,000 and 70,000 Mbuti were killed.
* Since 2016, the military of Myanmar has been carrying out genocidal atrocities against the Rohingya people. Tens of thousands have been murdered and over a million more have fled to other countries.
