* {{Cult}}: [[MostDefinitelyNotAVillain Hat Films would like to remind you that the Hand of Truth is an organised religion and not a cult in any way, shape or form]]. The others in ''Cornerstone'' don't buy it.

* StrawmanPolitical: In ''Cornerstone'', the trio start this way with the creation of a "Mile High Club", deliberately designed to be an over-the-top dig at sexists. This later gets abandoned when they create the Hand of Truth.

** Whenever the trio plays a custom track in ''Trials Evolution'' that has bullshit moments ([[CameraScrew bad camera angles]], [[CheckpointStarvation unforgiving checkpoints]], etc.), they "reward" the creator of the track with the "Fuck U Buddy Award" (or FUBA for short), complete with a trophy graphic in front of an explosion. There has been at least one occasion where the trio takes back the award after seeing that they were wrong for using it, which is followed by the FUBA trophy animation playing in reverse. One track ticked off the trio so bad that they gave the FUBA award ''five'' times just for that track alone. And then there's the track where they went ''completely overboard'' with the awards.

On top of their Let's Play gaming content, they have worked on official ''Minecraft'' trailers for Mojang, and produce an irregularly-updated animated {{machinima}} series: ''Machinima/FilfyAnimals''.

** The Sirs themselves take this position in the Yogscast's ''[[Machinima/YogscastMinecraftSeries Minecraft]]'' series, antagonising most groups on the server and actively planning to TakeOverTheWorld. It eventually escalates to open war with LetsPlay/KimRichards and LetsPlay/DuncanJones.

* AbsenteeActor:
** In the early days of Hat Films, Smith used to disappear for the odd series because of real life commitments such as his job. He was also absent from the recording of the Yogscast song "Diggy Diggy Hole" for the same reason.
** For the first Yogscast series of ''VideoGame/{{Murder}}'', Ross and Smith joined Sips, Sjin, Hannah and Simon, but Trott was absent for some reason. By the time of the next series, Trott joined the other two.
** For ''GTA'' on the main Yogscast channel, two of them have a habit of showing up while a third will be away.

** Thus far in "Old Fashion Bashin'", they have quit ''[[VideoGame/LEGOAdaptationGame LEGO Star Wars II]]'' (where they couldn't understand what to do) and ''Action Man- Mission Xtreme'' (which they thought was repetitive and irritating to play).

* UnreliableNarrator: The Overseer in ''Epic Hatventure'' seems to have a tendency to make fun of the trio.
* UnwinnableByMistake:
** First played straight in Skyblock, where the trio unwittingly screw themselves over by losing one of the resources needed for a cobblestone generator, forcing them to start from scratch again.
** Subverted in ''Epic Hatventure'' where, in the Forgotten City's mansion, in the library, Smith blows up a Creeper, exposing the redstone wiring underneath (and the hidden workings behind the scenes, which the gang joke about), then they activate the switch to the Royal Study, but then they notice that it's not opening the door. Then they realize that the Creeper blew up the redstone wiring responsible for opening the door. [[CuttingTheKnot So they decide that the "no breaking blocks" rule for this dungeon doesn't count in this instance, and break down the door.]]
** In their Skyblock series with Sips, the trio manage to break their cobblestone generator in ''five minutes'', causing Ross to drop an AtomicFBomb. They have to restart and [[BlatantLies pretend it never happened]].

* GettingCrapPastTheRadar: Ross' constant use of GFY is his way of swearing at the other sirs without actually saying it (which also means less censor bleeping for Trott to edit in). It also gets lampshaded during their spreadshirt promotional video where the trio say that GFY can mean anything you want it to be.

Aside from that, Trott is a cast member for ''WebVideo/HighRollers2016''.

** Their Skylands episodes also contain frequent impersonations of and references to [[Literature/LordOfTheRings Gollum]]/Sméagol and Creator/AndySerkis.

** When the boys keep catching fire in the wooden Skylands dungeon, they keep singing "[[Film/TheWickerMan The Lord is my shepherd]]." This has come up a few times since.
