* InformedAbility: The story claims he's some kind of MasterSwordsman, but he never displays any such skill or even unsheathes his sword at any point, even during cutscenes. Gameplay-wise, he's a pure mage/wizard type, and only uses his sheathed sword like a club.

* JokeCharacter: Aside from having the fastest Symbological casting time in the game, he's pretty useless. His stats work against him since 90% of his weaponry does ''not'' improve his INT and he has the lowest Defense potential in the game. Plus, his attacking style is very awkward and leaves him open to enemy interruption. His unique attacks aren't very good aside from the MP damaging Chaos Tide. [[spoiler:However, since Sophia doesn't join until late in the game, and Nel only has a few spells, he's the only option for most of the game if you want a dedicated magic user.]] Adray has a niche as a healer, because healing spells are effective regardless of INT and he can cast them more quickly than Sophia. One of his costumes makes him look like a WhiteMage, to boot.

* WhipItGood: Belzeber wields an electric whip in battle.

* BareYourMidriff: Their uniforms differ from the one worn by Nel and Clair, by leaving their midsection exposed beneath a mesh covering.

* LoveAtFirstSight: Noted in the preceding entry, though [[SubvertedTrope it doesn't last]].

* ShesGotLegs: Hot enough that they were the first thing Cliff noticed about her, which he mentions to Fayt when she springs them from prison in Ariglyph. Not knowing she heard him, until she offhandedly thanks him for the compliment.

* AnAxeToGrind: Helmets are actually his weapon of choice, though.

* CelibateHero: If you talk to the [=NPCs=] around her headquarters, one of them mentions that Clair hasn't settled down yet, because she's as much of a workaholic as Nel.
* DoesNotLikeMen: Downplayed, as she don't hates them. In each ending (excluding Fayt/Nel's), Adray asserts that Clair doesn't associate with any gentlemen, so he takes matters into his own hands to find one ''for her''.

* AmbiguouslyBi: Her close relationship with Clair contains a fair amount of subtext. However, her paired ending with Fayt is also pretty romantic.

* LipstickLesbian: Implied. While her sexuality isn't stated, Clair don't seen to be interested in guys, has long hair and is very feminine. She also constant worries about Nel's safety and shares a prolonged hug with her in a cutscene (which, in the manga version has Fayt and Cliff staring uncomfortably, til Cliff finally has to clear his throat to break it up).

* NayTheist: [[spoiler: Once he meets the 4D beings that created the universe, he's willing to accept that there are gods. He still won't worship them though because, in his own words, they're ''[[JerkassGods jerks]]''.]]

* ShipTease: With Mirage, during their default ending, and with [[spoiler: Tynave]] in the manga version.

** [[spoiler:Tynave]]'s case has bits of BelligerentSexualTension. She starts off berating him anytime he says, or tries, anything perverted, but she gradually becomes fonder of him. Going so far as to [[spoiler: stay behind with him to fight Albel]] and tend to his wounds afterward.

* BullyingADragon: If you take Roger with you to confront [[spoiler: [[VideoGame/ValkyrieProfile Lenneth]]]], he actually runs up to her and calls ''her'' [[HypocriticalHumor a little brat!]] About two seconds later, you see a flash of light, as she [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8n-gZV8Xm8 sends him flying back where he came from.]]
* ButtMonkey: Which he mostly brings on himself. Cliff snarks on him for being a pint-sized pain in the neck, Nel ignores his attempts to hit on her, and [[spoiler: Lenneth]] sends him flying for disrespecting her.

* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He's a bratty kid in way over his head most of the time, [[spoiler: but he can be the one to save the entire team from Biwig, instead of Nel or Albel]], if you've met the conditions to recruit him.
* HypocriticalHumor: Um, Roger...? You should be the last one to call ''someone else'' "little", or a "brat". Especially when that person happens to be [[spoiler: one of the game's [[SNKBoss Super Bosses]]]]!

The young, enigmatic leader of Quark. Maria was given command of the anti-Federation group after an incident where her mysterious genetic powers allowed the crew to escape certain death. Since then, she's developed a sharp mind and natural leadership ability. While she can be blunt at times, she's not without feeling and has the best of intentions. Her role is pivotal to the plot, because she [[spoiler: possesses the power of "Alteration", which eventually allows the party to physically cross over into 4D space]].

* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Clearly does not think highly of himself [[spoiler: due to blaming himself for his father's death]], and thus trains constantly and acts incredibly arrogant to cover it up. When Fayt beats him the first time, he's so shaken that he screams.

* TogetherInDeath: With her childhood friend, [[spoiler: Dion.]]

* DistressedDamsel: As you enter [[TheVeryDefinitelyFinalDungeon Spiral Tower]], [[spoiler: Luther]] abducts Blair and replaces her with [[EvilTwin "Pseudo Blair".]] You'll have to defeat her, along with three other special mini-bosses that're scattered around the level, to release Blair from her confinement.

* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: She realizes that what her brother is doing is wrong, and uses her administrative privileges to grant Fayt and the others access to Sphere Co's restricted areas. Once [[spoiler: Luther]] overrides her clearance at the company, she tries speaking with him one last time. It doesn't work.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: She aids Fayt and the others against the wishes of her brother, because she believes [[spoiler: they have souls and have a right to exist]].
* SiblingYinYang: As far as the Eternal Sphere inhabitants are concerned, she couldn't be farther in opinion from her brother [[spoiler: Luther]].

Fayt's father, and a famous researcher in the field of Symbology. He was one of the scientists who [[spoiler: experimented on Fayt, Maria, and Sophia when they were young, giving them the powers of Destruction, Alteration, and Connection, respectively.]]

* IDidWhatIHadToDo: After learning of the [[spoiler: 4D Being's intentions to wipe them from existence]], he and the other researchers used what time they had to genetically alter unique symbological powers into their own children that would allow them to [[spoiler:cross over into 4th dimensional space. It was a difficult decision, but it was their only chance to ensure their universe's survival]].

* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: His research into the Time Gate, along with the Esteeds', is what lead [[spoiler: Luther]] to consider them a potential threat to [[spoiler: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VP3sII3P5oY the 4D beings' existence]]]]. Even when Robert asked if they would be spared if they abandoned their research, [[spoiler: Luther]]'s answer was, "No".

* MidSeasonUpgrade: As [[spoiler: [[SNKBoss "Super Blair"]]]], though you only fight her post-game in the uppermost levels of [[spoiler: Sphere 211]].

* CanonForeigner: They only appear in the manga, yet take part in of some of the game's key events. For example, the game never explains where the Larva Crab came from. It was simply there as [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfnyNUoBrgM an early boss battle.]] In the manga, Pierre summons it]], since he and Kurin were working for Ariglyph. And later, during chapter 26, Nel enlists their aid to help capture Crossel.

* AwesomeMcCoolName: His first name is pronounced "fate" and his last name sounds like "line god". How cool is that?

* JackOfAllTrades: Fayt functions as this in terms of playing style, with powerful physical attacks, moderate HP and Defense, passing Intelligence, and being able to learn almost every basic Symbology spell. Ignoring his selection of weapons, (which tend to cater more towards his Attack) he has no exaggerated traits. In gameplay, anyway. He does have one area where he stands out in. Speed. He has the fastest movement out of the cast, and his normal attacks are quick and direct.

* SilverFox: He's the oldest member of the party at 58.

* IllGirl: She's suffering from a terminal illness.

* NiceHat: Gets a pink kitty hat while synthesizing weapons with materials.

* NiceHat: Pierre wears a black ski-cap, while Kurin wears a grey [[CommissarCap commisar's cap]].

* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: Her close range attack animations have her twirl and strike the enemy with the bells attached to the ends of her shawl. Some of her combat skills also involve spinning, like "Kaboom!", which summons a shooting star that spirals around her body and strikes enemies on all sides. She even spins and strikes a CoyGirlishFlirtPose, once a battle's over.

* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: Her ultimate skill: [[spoiler:Divine Wrath]], locks onto the nearest target, regardless of distance, and turns her into a whirlwind of spinning blades. It also has the potential to inflict the most HP damage of all the battle skills in-game. Which is why you don't gain access to it until post-game.

* {{Expy}}: Of Phia from the first Star Ocean game, mainly appearance wise. Like Phia, Nel is a red-headed warrior dressed in skimpy clothing who is fiercely loyal to her kingdom. However, Nel is a FragileSpeedester ninja who uses symbology while Phia is a physical attacking knight who doesn't use any symbology. And while both are typically serious individuals, Phia at times could show a wider range of emotions compared to how overtly stoic Nel is.

* HumiliationConga: Goes from one of the most feared generals on the planet to getting stripped of his title and thrown into a dungeon after Fayt, Cliff, and Nel beat him in a fight. If he doesn't join the party, they'll learn he's been reduced to hanging around in the lava caves simply because he doesn't have anything better to do.

* MulticoloredHair: The fringes and the ends of his hair are blonde, while the rest is black.

* ConsummateProfessional: Nel is all business and is allergic to the idea of "relaxing." She can't seem to appreciate even minor indulgences (for example, she is baffled at the idea of "cosplay" and believes there must be some functional reason why Gemity residents dress up in elaborate outfits) and declines to take a much-needed vacation during her solo ending. Her overly professional manner belies a soft, compassionate heart, as Clair notes early in the game.

* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Nel and Albel initially, though Nel seems more bitter about the begrudging alliance. Albel couldn't care less.

* FingerlessGloves: Part of her default outfit in-game. They are replaced by OperaGloves for her slightly altered outfit in the manga.
