Nightmare Fuel / Wonder Woman (1987)

This is the Nightmare Fuel page for Wonder Woman Volume 2 for the Nightmare Fuel page regarding the franchise at large see Wonder Woman.

  • The Amazons' whole (new) backstory is some pretty weird stuff of nightmares. In the Perez run, they are all the reincarnated souls of women murdered by men, including Hippolyta who's the reincarnation of a pregnant woman murdered by her pissed off mate for showing pity (this woman later seems to be retconned to have been Magala), and were brought back to bring peace to the world under the decree of the Olympians Gods. Thanks to Ares, the Amazons were tricked and made into sex slaves by an unwitting Hercules and his goons until they managed to fight back and eventually were forced to become guardians of a literal portal to Hell as penance that they also made into a personal utopia. Though as the stories progress you'll know that the utopia doesn't last.
    • Even more disturbing is how the Amazons actually have traumatic Past-Life Memories due to being created from women who were betrayed and murdered by men, keeping such memories of their past lives for centuries. The only exception is Diana who was killed as a fetus in her past life.
  • Zeus. A hallmark of God Is Evil if there ever was one. If you thought he was bad in mythology, he's arguably worse in the Wonder Woman-Verse and the Amazons still have to worship him or suffer his wrath. Case in point is one of his first appearances includes trying to rape Wonder Woman and getting pissed for her respectfully refusing! The other gods of his own pantheon are largely helpless against him without a lot of unnoticed planning and even taking Crossover Cosmology of DCU into account, theoretical powerhouses of other pantheons like Ahura Mazda and Kāne tend to bend under Zeus's foot like blades of grass, this while Zeus is weakened due to a lack of devotion no less!
  • Ares is a pretty nightmarish Satan Expy in the Perez Incarnation. Especially since he's not the Dumb Muscle he's presented as in mythology, but a calculated bloodthirsty Omnicidal Maniac warmonger who usually makes sure he can bounce back from whatever failures he commits. At one point he was powerful enough to give Darkseid pause and grew in strength to the point Wonder Woman wasn't much of a threat to him anymore.
  • Those Ares possesses have a gruesome fate; once he's done with them he boils them alive which usually starts visually with their faces steaming, bubbling and sloughing off followed quickly by their eyes and the rest of their soft parts.
  • Circe is a particularly nasty piece of work considering she's what you would get if the Circe from The Odyssey had her worst traits turned up to eleven and gave her the ambition of global supervillain who believed Dystopia Justifies the Means. Like the golden age and silver age, DC's Circe is still a mortal sorceress rather than an outright goddess, but this time Circe has been given full reign of Hecate's magic and thus far more powerful than Wonder Woman. While Diana does eventually learn how to fight back against and even sometimes cut deals with Circe, Circe's first three post crisis appearances read much more like horror stories than heroic adventures. Wonder Woman is initially rendered completely helpless twice in a row and forced to endure the sadistic whims of Circe, all because Circe misinterpreted a prophecy and believes rendering Diana Deader than Dead is the only way to keep Diana from taking Hecate's soul from her, deaf to Diana pleas that she doesn't even want it. Even as Diana and Circe come to stand on more even footing it doesn't change that Circe's hobbies include instigating genocide for laughs, turning people into animals for consumption, turning people monstrous beast hybrids she calls Bestiamorphs that are compelled to obey her commands, eating them as well if they disappoint her, as one dead minion turned chicken dinner can attest, and being an all-around cruel harpy who lives to make Wonder Woman and her loved ones as miserable as possible. At her worst, she's the cause of horrible events like that of Amazons Attack!, and does eventually manage to actually kill Wonder Woman at least once by turning her back into clay. Circe can put even the likes of Lex Luthor and The Joker under her heel. She went so fartorturing the former for denying her help in becoming President Evil, and denying her bed, both by physically harming him and making him watch her methodical destruction of New York State.
  • The Second Doctor Poison is pretty nightmarish considering she uses drugs and self-inflicted surgical wires to fix her eyes and mouth into a permanent stare and grin. She's also made other, less visible modifications that let her exhale poison gas and has as little restraint as she does sanity. This is a woman who released a virus she hoped would multiply and kill everyone on Earth For Science!
  • Doctor Psycho. If his freakish appearance doesn't unsettle you, his freakish mental powers and the way he uses them will. In his first Vol 2 appearance, he's shown using his mental abilities to Mind Rape Hermes and Wonder Woman into seeing his head on each other's bodies and mentally traumatizing a pregnant woman's fetus so her unborn baby drives her and itself insane before it dies. He did all that just to give his powers a test run. He also brainwashes Wonder Woman's Tagalong Kid into thinking she's Wonder Woman and plagues her dreams with nightmares just for fun. He only gets worse with each new appearance as his next act is trying to have people commit suicide in droves by having them jump off buildings. All just to give Wonder Woman a message.
  • Dark Angel, who has to be recognized as the official reason why Donna Troy's past is such a tangled mess to the point it might never be truly fixed. She's an interdimensional witch who sought vengeance on Hippolyta but grabbed Donna by mistake when looking for Diana. Dark Angel caused Donna to suffer through a neverendingly traumatic string of alternate lives doomed to end in misery. Even when she finally recognized who Donna is, Dark Angel won't let up and does just about everything she can to make Donna's life as horrible and unhappy as she can.
