Seen better, seen worse

I started watching PewDiePie's videos about a year ago after seeing a few of his montages and genuinely finding it funny when he screamed at every jump scare and gave voices to inanimate objects. A year later, he's still doing those things, but less frequently, and when he does do them they feel old and recycled.

Not that I only have negative things to say about PewDiePie - his playthroughs of The Crooked Man and Slender: The Arrival held my interest, but mainly because the games were interesting and PewDiePie's input was mainly his natural reaction to them. When he plays games that either depend 100% on the game or on himself for entertainment, I lose interest.

His fans can be a bit overzealous in their appreciation of his videos, but in his defence, he has very frequently asked them not to harass other YouTubers or start Flame Wars. PewDiePie's greatest asset is probably the genuine nature in which he addresses his fans, frequently thanking them for helping him get to the position he's in. He truly does seem to love what he does.

I'm still subscribed to him so that I can see when a new montage comes up, but otherwise I don't go out of my way to watch his videos. He's not the best thing on YouTube by far (that would be ProJared) but his detractors have a tendency to exaggerate his faults - when he's unfunny, he's unfunny, but I never thought he was offensively bad.

Overall, he's not the Messiah of Let's Plays, nor is he the Antichrist. Sometimes I'm disappointed with his videos, but occasionally I'm pleasantly surprised. I'd give him 6/10.

I'm a fan of Pewds, but I agree with you on most counts. I find him funny most of the time, but not all of his videos are funny and he does have some weaknesses (such as the ones you listed). I get that he's very YMMV, but I can't help but think that his most vocal detractors are really detractors of the overzealous fanboys trolling other people's videos looking to start flame wars. And those fanboys are just as overzealous in defending him from critics, which leads to more mature Bros being embarrassed and the critics just hating Pewds more.

Sometimes the vularity is just obnoxious, and sometimes he's just a wee bit too loud for my liking. Sometimes his videos are plain unfunny. I get how that would annoy a lot of viewers who had different senses of humor. But the "mature adults" bitching about him, painting the whole Bro Army with the same brush and picking fights with Bros are every bit as obnoxious and immature as the overzealous fans they can't stand.

You didn't find him offensively bad whenever he used to screech "RAPE" and otherwise made offhanded and random mentions about rape, like how a monster was about to rape him or how he would rape a corpse in his older videos?

There have been offhanded mentions to rape in Game Grumps for crying out loud. I get the feeling that not many people at all are genuinely offended by those jokes, they just latch onto it as a reason to back up their dislike of him.

I don't think they're funny, but they're too stupid to be offensive. It's not like he's being malicious about it.

I don't know what Game Grumps is, or how it's relevant. And I don't think you really know what "offensive" means. "Too stupid to be offensive", really?

I can explain the relevance - many people on the internet have made offhand remarks about 'rape', including Pew Die Pie, Retsupurae, Game Grumps, Two Best Friends Play, Machinima, etc. But for some reason, I don't see any backlash towards them, just Pew Die Pie. It's probably just a coincidence that everyone who doesn't like Pew Die Pie is offended by his jokes in particular, right?

'Too stupid to be offensive' is the short way of saying 'His jokes are terrible but they're meant to be jokes.' He's not supporting, condoning, or encouraging rape and it's childish to act as though he is. Say he's unfunny and I'll agree with you. Say he's offensive and I hope to God you don't find the trope page for 'Black Comedy Rape' or 'Memetic Molester'.

I don't really care who makes the jokes, they're offensive regardless of who makes them. And if you really don't see any backlash against Retsupurae and Machinima for it then you might as well be blind.

As I've said, you don't really know what "offensive" means, do you? It doesn't mean he has to encourage rape or anything, and it's pretty silly that you think so.

'Offensive' means something that causes offense. In my experience on the internet, I've seen the rise and... further rise of things like Penny Arcade, VG Cats, Cyanide and Happiness, the aforementioned Retsupurae (who I have followed for 2 years and never once seen any backlash against related to offhanded rape jokes) and I have learnt from these that the internet can take an occasional joke in poor taste. However, Pew Die Pie has gotten more backlash than I've ever seen before for his use of the word 'rape'.

Either Pew Die Pie has magically attracted the attention of people who are much more easily offended than others, or a lot of the people who hate him are using his bad sense of humour as an excuse to gain some kind of moral high ground over him. It wouldn't surprise me.

Obviously I can't tell you that you're not offended by something, but if you truly do find him offensive, then there are plenty of bigger, nastier, more offensive targets you should be complaining about first. The Amazing Atheist flat out threatened a rape survivor.

The thing is, the internet is beginning to become more openly hostile towards the use of the word rape, and rightfully so. Saying "Oh no, he's gonna rape me!" and laughing is tasteless because rape in general is a pretty awful thing any way you look at it, and comments like those made by Pew Die Pie are helping to desensitize the term and turn it not into a serious matter, but a joke.

Scenario: you have a best friend who is a person of color. One day you're eating lunch at some cafe, and the topic of police comes up. You begin to describe a "humorous" scenario in which a PoC is stopped by the police, and you end it with "Don't taze me bro, I'm just trying to walk here!"

Now, unlawful persecution is a big thing for non-white people - even today there is a large racial bias concerning people of different ethnic backgrounds in the police force. If you had that hanging over your head every day, that you could be stopped randomly because a cop didn't like the way you looked, would you joke about it? And if someone joked about it, would you find it funny?

Rape comments are similar. Even when they're not intended to be funny, they're taking this serious event and degrading it to "hahaha this bad thing is going to happen to me, please don't do it mr monster!". People are hearing the comments and thinking "Wow, this man is going to be forcibly entered by a monster! That sounds so funny!" when the reaction to a rape should not be amusement. By making rape amusing in any way, shape or form, or at least desensitizing the term so it is no longer a serious statement, the commenter is dismissing the very real issue of rape into a joke, a buzzword used for the amusement of others.

And if you've been through a rape, do you want people being amused at the event? Would you find those lines funny?

That is why the rape comments of Pew Die Pie are of poor taste. There are a lot more people with much more volatile opinions towards women and the subject of rape, but in a way Pewdiepie is contributing to the growing legion of people who don't see rape as this huge issue, and who in turn allow these comments to spread out and be digested at face value. It's a slow, gradual watering-down of the term, like the ocean beating against a cliff-face. He might not be a full-on anti-woman pro-rape jackass, but the comments he is criticised for are contributing to the growing rape culture of the internet.

^^ "B-But someone is worse!" is a pretty dumb thing to say. The Amazing Atheist is an obnoxious piece of shit, and if you'd made a review where you'd say something like you don't think what he says is offensive then I'd have called that bullshit as well, don't worry. This is a Pew Die Pie review however, thus bringing up worse people is simply not relevant.

A bit too vulgar at times, but is actually pretty funny if you can get past the language and silliness. The playthroughs with Cry are the best ones.

Truth be told I'm not a fan of vulgar jokes, especially ones related to rape. I just think it's a bit too convenient that everyone decided they were incredibly offensive at the exact same time that Pew Die Pie started facing growing backlash from Retsupurae and other L Pers. Bringing up worse people is mostly irrelevant, but if PDP is the only one to have faced this backlash despite others saying worse, it makes it look like either people have very changeable opinions of offensive jokes, or they just wanted to feel morally superior to someone they didn't like on the internet.

Plus, like, he has a dog!

You are such a barrel. I mean, he even read a paragraph of - I'm sorry, I'll stop now.

I'm not sure how I ended up defending him so vehemently since I don't like most of his videos. I think I've just seen too many people who are intentionally offensive compared to someone who, if he is offensive, is so unintentionally. Combined with his hatedom doing what all hatedoms do and exaggerating his flaws beyond belief (his comment on Retsupurae's video did not warrant the amount of internet drama it caused) then I'm left with an urge to defend him. Not to defend him for being good, but to defend him for being 'not that bad'.

Maybe 5/10 would've been a better rating.

I do think he is overhated to some degree, bloody Rooster Teeth is more offensive than Pewdiepie. Pewdiepie might make those stupid comments, but some of the horrible, vehement things that comes out of Michael's mouth are just really piercing (but yes, hilarious).

tbh, I reckon we should just lock Pewdiepie reviews. If the review's decent (AKA not incredibly positively or negatively biased) everyone under the sun has to start a fight in the comments. Negative? Someone says something positive and questions the hate, and people get nasty. Positive? Well, I'd say no-one expects the Spanish Inquisition, but in this case it's visible from a mile away.

What I find infuriating about the discussion of rape jokes is, they're ubiquitous in the gaming community and online in general. You know what's different about Pewdie? The fact that he apologized. He stopped making the jokes, and apologized for them. He hasn't made one since then. And now everyone wants to shit all over him for something he stopped doing and has apologized for. Way to go, internet.

None of Pewdiepie's haters really want to admit he does the exact same things they do, he just adds in a few more F-bombs and shrieks. I'm with Elmo3000 that people just do not like the Barrels that go around picking fights on other L Pers' videos and want to feel morally superior to someone they don't like on the internet.
