I've started an Image Pickin' thread to discuss a potential change to the page image. Here

So recently somebody has been going through the comic's page and making weird additions everywhere, particularly to the character pages (and certain characters specifically), in a way that matches some of the more fan wank-y sentiments I've seen in places such as twitter and the like. Primarily mischaracterizing certain events or characters through bad-faith interpretation, or just outright misunderstanding what certain tropes are. I've been making note of them and have a small collection, but since I'm not too good at editing stuff on the pages, I thought I'd point them out somewhere like here so someone good at this can do it. Is there a problem with me doing that?

No, go ahead. What are the specific things you have concerns about?

Do folders work here? Otherwise this is going to be a very long post.

Test it out by editing one of your other posts.

Or take this to a full Forum thread?

No folders, but some markup does work. I'll edit the list to be a bit clearer and post it here. I might also do two posts, one for the character tropes and one for the rest. There are a lot of issues in the character tropes.

So, regarding the Character Page mistropes:

Cassidy Character Tropes

  • Anti-villain - Something she outright isn't. She may not be the nicest person around, but the girl's role was definitely not that of a villain in any kind.

  • Self-Harm - This one is questionable. While the act she takes to transform is somewhat reminiscent of self-harm, it ultimately isn't that. Additionally, it has been outright stated by the author that that's not what the character is doing, and there has been encouragement that such an interpretation not be played up. Having it on her character page seems therefore wrong.

  • Well-Intentioned Extremist - Questionable. Cassidy does indeed want to do something she thinks is right and goes overboard in doing it, but again, she is not a villain, and while attacking someone else is problematic, I don't know if the situation is severe enough to classify for the usual types of situations that the trope covers.

Team Flash (Lettie specifically) Tropes

  • Ironic name - Not exactly an issue, just that the arguments for why her name is ironic seem very stretchy.

  • Purple is Powerful - While the argument brought up in the entry isn't wrong, it also doesn't explain the Powerful part, since we haven't seen the character use her powers yet. She just happens to have the unusual eye color.

Team Alchemical Character Tropes

  • Forgotten Fallen Friend - A case of someone not reading the description of a trope. The explanation given completely contradicts the trope itself by listing moments where the fallen friends are remembered.

The Woman In White Character Tropes

  • Anthropomorfic Personification & Ascended To A Higher Plane Of Existence - Redundant tropes. Both of their descriptions are that either is possible, but there hasn't been enough evidence to prove one of them. Also, both are purely speculative and lack any proper evidence to being correct within the story itself.

The Golden One Character Tropes

  • Familiar - Again, purely speculative. There is nothing in the story indicating that this character is a familiar, in fact there being evidence for it being it's own individual.

I'll add the other mistropes from the Moments and YMMV pages in a separate post.

Fan Nickname YMMV Tropes

Not that those nicknames are not used, but they are used primarily amongst the comic's Discord server. While said Discord does seem to be the most populous place for discussion of the comic, it might be better to move those nickname entries to the Trivia page, and mention the existence and importance of the Discord server as a source of much fanon.

Memetic Mutation YMMV Tropes

A similar case. Aside from the first one ("A good night's sleep is the first step to kicking ass.", which has been everywhere) the other entries mentioned are all primarily relevant to discussion in the Discord server. I would suggest they be concentrated in one single entry that regards the Discord server itself, although that entry would probably be better placed in the trivia page as well.

Funny Moments page

  • "Forte Bass and Outrageous Apple are twin sisters. That was so unexpected it's hilarious." - Found under chapter 16. Entirely YMMV.

Those are the ones I found for now. There are probably more under the main page, but I haven't had the time to look those over yet. I'll bring them up if I see any.

Anti Villain and Self-Harm - Agreed, not an example. An Anti-Villain still performs villainous acts. Cassidy, at worst, had a fit of jealousy. Self-harm wouldn't appl since Cassidy isn't actually harming herself, whatever it may look like. Well Intentioned Extremist - At most, Cassidy falls into The problem is the 'problem', otherwise I would say 'maybe' at most.

Ironic Name and Purple is Powerful - I don't think we know enough about Lettie to know if this name is truly ironic or if she truly is powerfully purple.

Forgotten Fallen Friend - Agreed. The entry itself shows the ways they're remembered.

Anthropomorfic Personification, Ascended To A Higher Plane Of Existence, and Familiar - Agreed. Speculative Troping. Though Familiar has the benefit of being in-story speculation so an entry focused on that could be made to work, maybe.

Fan Nickname - Maybe just add that most of the nicknames come from the comic's Discord server. They're still legit nicknames used by a central chunk of the fandom (given it's an official Discord server)

Memetic Mutation - Here we can probably be stricter. Good Night's Sleep won best panel, so it has a place. Harder to say for the rest. Memetic Mutation is not a trope I work with a lot.

Agree with the twin sisters funny moment. Nothing about it is presented as funny, nor is it regarded as any kind of unintentional funny, to my knowledge.

So, about those tropes. We don't really seem to have anybody protesting the idea of changing them. Should we just go ahead and clear them up? I don't know how to edit pages, but I can offer help in pruning and rewriting stuff as necessary.

How long can this page keep up the illusion that this comic is about Team Alchemical?

I don't want to spoil it for newcomers but I feel like when the big twist is in chapter 2 (out of at least 8) I wonder if there'll be a point when adding spoilers for that gets awkward.

Well, you could split the page into tropes for before, and after Chapter 2, with folders, or ask / set a Spoilers Unmarked notice at the beginning?

At the risk of necro'ing a discussion, an idea I was thinking of as a compromise would be to change the comic's description a bit to add something like "After tragedy strikes Team Alchemical one of its members, Alchemical Water Undine, begins trying to find out why it happened. Even if that means she has to do it alone."

Spells out that something happens to Team Alchemical without getting specific enough to spoil and that Undine is the main protagonist.

For myself, in acknowledgement to the general consensus, I mostly try to spoiler tag only the most direct references to Team Alchemical's fate. If I can avoid it or just be vague with "what happened to them" I will.
