Removed these per request in the locked pages thread, as it's questionable that we'd want to trope real people.
Osama provides examples of numerous tropes:
- Dead All Along: Some people believed that was dead for a long time, before he was found and killed.
- Elite Army: Osama had them in the form of these guys.
- Hypocrite:
- When his compound was searched after his death, among the items found in his compound were American soft drinks (including Coke and Pepsi), Nesquik, and Vaseline, all items that seem contradictory to his anti-capitalism views.
- The CIA also found a significant Porn Stash on his computer, which flies in the face of his highly conservative views.
- Large and in Charge: An intimidating 6' 5".
- Lean and Mean: The FBI described bin Laden as having a thin build.
- Middle Eastern Coalition: He and his organization desired the restoration of the medieval Islamic caliphate.
- Mission from God: From Allah.
- Moe Greene Special: News reports over the May 2 assassination of Bin Laden reveal that Bin Laden was either shot in the left eye when he refused to surrender, or the bullet went high and blew away part of Osama's skull. Stephen Colbert squeed quite a bit at this particular detail.
- Multinational Team: His army of fanatics was said to consist of Arabs, Afghans, Pakistanis, Uzbeks, Chechens, Somalis, converted Western citizens, and others.
- The Stateless: From 1995 on, he was no longer a Saudi citizen because of his terrorist activities.

So....does this go anywhere on the page? Is this Hidden Depths, Villain does shopping, something else?
I would add the following entry:
- The Stateless: Since 1995, he is no longer a Saudi citizen because of his terrorist activities.
Done. You might want to ask here though.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanCould we get rid of the reference to Allah on the "Mission from God" line, seeing how Allah MEANS God, and the inclusion implies that it doesn't?
Hide / Show RepliesIndeed. I'd also question even including it given its usually for characters who actually are confirmed to have one. Maybe adding 'or at least he thinks so anyway'
I'm baaaaaaackCan we please remove this, or at least edit it?
Deadpan Snarker: One of his tapes responded to the USA's propaganda about "freedom" with him saying "if I was doing this because I hated freedom, I'd be bombing Sweden, not America".
Especially since:
A: If anybody has bothered paying attention to his actual ideology worth a damn, they would notice it being very, Very hostile to freedom even as it is defined by the usual Muslim scholar rings.
And B: If anybody has bothered paying attention to the news, you would know that he actually Has bombed and otherwise attacked Sweden and other Swedish targets, and has given his blessings to even more.
It really comes across as a snide, ill-advised snipe, or a research-failing attempt to be balanced. Either way, it isn't worth that much.
Hide / Show RepliesI think its appropriate for the trope. Its not claimed anywhere on the page that he didn;t bomb Sweden if or that he supported freedom, just that he make a snarky remark about those things. If A villain in a fictional work made a comment like that and turned out to be lying, it would still count for the trope.
The article, as written, seems very West-centric and Islamophobic. It should be unlocked to allow more competent editing.
Hide / Show RepliesBring your suggestions to this thread.
Let's just say and leave it at that.Hey, Id just like to point out a lot of other things he did are completely missing. What about when he was working with the US to stop the the spread of communism? More background info should be added.
Hide / Show RepliesCan we add a Spell My Name With An S entry? I'm getting weirded out by the callings-out of "Usama" et al I've been seeing considering they're, from what I can tell, perfectly valid Romanizations.
Hide / Show RepliesOnly place I've seen that is Fox News, so you decide how credible that spelling is.
http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten The FBI spells his name as Usama. I'll grant you that I've never seen it that way before this weekend, though, when I Googled it to see if Fox News had a typo.
Could be because they didn't want it confused with Obama. I recall hearing the NBC woman's very first twitter post about Osama being killed had that exact typo.
I meant the person typoed "Osama" as "Obama," so the Twitter post read "Obama shot and killed." I should've made that clearer.
I have always seen it spelled Osama, and that should be correct. If anything, this should be Political Correctness Gone Mad (professional journalists ought to be careful and savvy enough to avoid dumb mistakes like that, after all).
Optimism is a duty. It's not as if I see 9/11 as anything other than a tragedy, a terrorist and massive loss of innocent life and all that, but presumably the "No real life examples" for Moral Event Horizon applies here too? (besides, what about that embassy in the late 90s?)
Hide / Show RepliesI removed it a month ago, but it's back. I'd like to know as well.
A fistful of me.Somehow I think he'll get an exception. After all if he was not the biggest murderer the world had ever seen he'd be in the top three.
He's an exception. Just like The Holocaust was a Moral Event Horizon for Nazi Germany. The no real life examples thing is so people don't get offended on a contentious point. Murdering thousands of innocent people on 9/11 is not something that well-adjusted people think wouldn't be a Moral Event Horizon.
Edited by doomsday524 He who has a why to live can bear almost any how -Neitzsche (I know)I already got it removed. Too controversial (he did many other things before, some really bad ones) and No Real Life Examples Please.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman"Biggest murderer the world has ever seen"? That's stretching it a little. I don't see how he matches up to Hitler and other genocidal dictators who had millions of people murdered. Hyperbole like this is the reason this page is locked, I suppose.
Optimism is a duty.I'm sorry, but The Chessmaster entry is up for debate. Not everyone believes that he was a master planner, and a lot of us think that to put that entry on the page is to give him way too much credit. I move to have it moved to YMMV.
Edited by Severen Hide / Show RepliesAgreed, it is certainly debatable whether he was so.
Optimism is a duty.A rather creepy letter from him appears here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2002/nov/24/theobserver
By the way, who locked this article? And was there a specific reason why?
Inanity in 140 characters or more Hide / Show RepliesEspecially after his death it was a precaution because of how it could have easily descended into portraying him as a myrter against US oppression and the like.
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursCould we add an entry for Hiding in Plain Sight? He was holed up in a multi-million dollar compound in an area where a large number of Pakistani military lived, who were ostensibly chasing him.
Hide / Show RepliesYou ask for edits here.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanYou know, sure there are some people who interpreted him as a 'freedom fighter', but they shouldn't be given any more credibility than a neo-Nazi who would think the same way about Adolf Hitler. Between all the horrible things this guy has done, he shouldn't be given him the air of the Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgement, as, like Hitler or Stalin, there is something most would say is objectively wrong with someone who would give him this characterization. Now, pulling a Not So Different and saying "Bush is a lot like Bin Laden", or "Obama is a lot like Bin Laden", that is another matter, but The Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgement has an exception for people like him.
He who has a why to live can bear almost any how -Neitzsche (I know)I think Big Bad should be removed from the main page seeing as the rules are clear. Big Bad is one of those tropes where the No Real Life Examples rule applies. And just so we're clear, I say this with all due respect to the many victims of his atrocities.
Not an example: Zawahiri was known to be second in command well before Osama's death.
- Dragon Their Feet: If Osama is really dead, then Zawahiri would most likely be in charge of Al-Qaeda.
The top section should be expanded, like it was before. Nobody's going to miss the asshole, but there's no point in skimming around his being pretty important.
Hide / Show RepliesAnd a funny anurism moment for south park... he was shot in the head by the end of the episode...
The inquisition's here and its here to stay.Recommend adding the trope Burial at Sea, since that was how his body was disposed of since no other countries were willing or able to have him buried on their soil.
Since the page is locked, can someone change it from Special Forces to Navy SEA Ls? There's a big difference, and the right people should get credit.
Hide / Show RepliesIn the name of precision, perhaps it ought to say he was killed by the U.S. Navy's DEVRGU. You're right, though; Special Forces, when discussing American military, is a very specific unit, part of the Army, even though worldwide it's a more general term. I guess it wouldn't be incorrect to say he was killed by "U.S. special forces" (no caps), but it seems appropriate to give credit to DEVGRU, since they're the ones who did it.
He's dead now. Can we change the article to past-tense?
Hide / Show RepliesEditing is locked because he's a public figure. How do we unlock this?
Wow... I got freaking ninja's. Like 4 times.
I was expecting there would be at LEAST TV Tropes I could head too for prime "troping", but damn, so many people here already,
Doitdoitdoitdoitdoit. This needs to be edited. Gogogogogogo. Do it now. Gogogogogogo.
Yes, PLEASE.
At least add a line that "Reported dead on 01-05-2011" and provide a link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Osama_bin_Laden until we can confirm anything further.
Tyler Durden is my bitch.Page updated. There's a forum thread in Wiki Talk to request updates to locked pages. Please go there with suggestions for any additional changes.
I should add that while it's an historic moment and definitely worth celebrating, can we please avoid "America Fuck Yeah" and similar comments that only serve to make other people think of us as a bunch of arrogant dickheads?
Edited by Fighteer "It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I think we (as in everyone who wants to live free of terrorism) have a right to crow a little, so I'll say this.
As the man most responsible for bringing terror into the 21st century, Osama Bin Laden was involved in the murder of over three thousand Americans. He was involved in terrorist attacks around the world. He was involved in the persecution and oppression of the Afghani people. He had declared that he would never be taken alive, that he would die a myrter, and yesterday he got his wish. While this will not bring an end to terrorism, the world can take comfort in knowing that it is a safer place without him. And without a figurehead the war on terrorism can hopefully soon draw to a close.
Much as I'd like to believe it, killing one guy isn't going to bring the war on terror that much closer to closing. -Hopefully- it'll deal a morale blow to our enemies.
All -I- can say is somewhere, there's a group of special ops guys who're never going to have to buy their own drinks again for the rest of their lives.
Don't get me wrong, the fight against terrorism will never go away. However with time the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq where the main campaign for this war has been waged can come home.
Here's something I would like to add to the article but can't because the page is locked. Someone consider it, I don't think it's too political:
Dirty Coward: Apparently when U.S. Navy Seals stormed his mansion, he used some random woman there as a human shield while he fired at the Seals.
... Hide / Show RepliesNope he was unarmed according to the white house: http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/05/03/us-binladen-shootout-idUSTRE7425U020110503
But we should change the main page to mention DEVGRU or the Navy SEA Ls specifically at least. "Special Forces" is an entirely separate force that's part of the US Army: [Green Berets]
The Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are trope on this page is misused. Would whomever is doing the present -> past tense updates please remove it?
Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.Eddie:
I agree with 99.999999% of your actions, but why does Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters not apply here? To many of the people in the region he is a freedom fighter (he certainly was when he was working for us back in the eighties).
Hide / Show RepliesRead through the political history of Afghanistan if this doesn't sound right, I understand that the Taliban were essentially not seen as freedom fighters, even to their own country. The freedom bit, as I understand it, lies in forcing the West out of the Arab world.

This is missing the famous "Janitor was right" quote from a Scrubs episdode in 2007. "In my opinion we should be looking for Bin Laden in Pakistan".
