"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMisplaced Nationalism is in the "Technology & Internet" folder, which seems out of place. Doesn't it belong in either the "Geography" or "Culture" folders?
Should we create a Noteworthy DC Comics Staff in the same vein as Noteworthy Disney Staff? I would also suggest Marvel, but it already has this page.
Should there be an entry for Green/Renewable/Clean power? I could throw something together to get it started, but only if there's a desire for it.
Your favorite inspirational quote hereShould we start working on actual Useful Notes pages for most Comic Strips pages ? Most of them are only indexes, and very few actually give any history or information on the corresponding country's comics. If anything, should we not move some of those indexes from Main to UsefulNotes (those who do include history, description and such) ? I'm really not sure if this would be a good idea, which is why I'm asking.
Do I need to put a Useful Notes through YKTTW or do something else? I want to do a Useful Notes: Alabama.
Hide / Show RepliesYKTTW is the normal way.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI think we could use a Useful Notes on manufacturing — issues like what processes and materials are appropriate for different types of components, why MatterReplicators couldn't make everything, the scale of industry needed to produce modern technology...
Edited by AnimeSunglasses Angry Nice Guy Rankings: 1: Bruce Banner 2: Shizuo Heiwajima 3: ?? 4: Moi (repressed due to lack of invulnerability) Hide / Show RepliesYou can offer that idea up in YKTTW.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI'm not finding any useful notes for Boxing. We should have one, but I don't know enough to make it myself.
"AXEL ON STAAAAGE!" Hide / Show RepliesYou can start one in YKTTW.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWould it be a good idea to give Useful Notes pages the Trivia markup? They are trivia in another sense, and they also don't belong on work pages as tropes.
Hide / Show RepliesI dunno. Might want to post that in the forums, though.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanCan we make requests for pages we'd like to see?
If so, then I would like to request a page on psychoactive drugs and (As Elodie Hiras already said), rape and sexual abuse.
Hide / Show RepliesThe latter two are going to be difficult to have, given the current content policies of the wiki.
135 - 158 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300Could someone more knowlegdable then me on the subject create a page on The Freemasons
Edited by 58.165.204.143 Working on cleaning up List of Shows That Need Summary Hide / Show RepliesI wish I had the expertise. I too would love to read a UN page on them!
135 - 158 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300Capitalism and socialism are clearly political-why have they been put under the "Other" section? I also think Homelessness might be political. Victim Blaming is likely better in the psychology or philosophy sections as well.
Edited by 69.172.221.6 Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.-Philip K. Dick Hide / Show RepliesI've done some sorting, but I don't see Homelessness as being suited to the political section. Economics might be, though; thoughts?
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.Hello!
I wondered, could it be possible to make a useful notes page about rape and sexual abuse? Would it bring troubles to the TV Tropes with advertising and other things?
The Useful Notes section is there to:
To debunk common media stereotypes. To help you understand some media better. To educate, inform, and sometimes entertain.
And I think the subject really needs some centralized stereotypes debunking, and we really need more informations about the subject. I think finding TV tropes was very worth it just because I saw the Double Standard Rape: Female on Male page on this wiki (back when it had it's old name, curiosity drove me to click a link to it, and boy, how hard it was to search for that page before the rename despite how helpful it was... I was very shocked that it had been removed, for how helpful it had been, even with the painful title...), and realized why I was struggling with a lots of issues, and how serious an incident I was victim of in secondary school was... Maybe a useful notes section talking about the aftermath, how it can NEVER be the victim's fault, and resources for getting help would be a boon to many other people... I mean, we have a useful notes page about suicide and suicide prevention... But then again, maybe it's just me... I am far from an expert in the subject, so I won't start a YKTTW... My 2 cents.
The main porblem with the last suggestion is that, thanks to our No Such Thing As Notability policy, all the countries can have potentially their subpages.
I think they should be put of subpages; after all, they keep being Useful Notes. It makes the main page of UN (Useful Notes, not the United Nations) more organized this way, there are too many stuff to put them all.
Regarding the "useful thing to writers", history (what's usually on the country's page) is important (and most of the writers tend to screw it up anyway, if the Hollywood Atlas page is any indication), but other stuff is more difficult to find. Personally, I've never visited any of the countries I've written Useful Notes for, so there are some thing that I can't add, much to my chagrin.
But yeah, I recognize it's complicated. I guess it all depends on how you see it.
Edited by AmusedTroperGuy Hide / Show RepliesHm. The problem I'm trying to fix is that it's not clear that some of the Us No pages are effectively part of the table of contents, while others are leaves, without any children of their own. Maybe split this page by the categories, so we have Useful Notes.Food, Useful Notes.Geography and so forth. That would make it clear that it's a multi-level index, and that people should dig through it to find the actual page they want. Your thoughts?
Actually, the problem I have is mainly of aesthetics. If you do what you're saying, at the bottom of the page(s) affected there will be a link to Useful Notes/Whatever-it's-Us No-of and another with just Useful Notes. In my opinion, it looks redundant and ugly. Another thing you can do is put a line on the main page saying that some of the pages have added info (i.e. links) inside them, so they'll know they have to look for what they want. Sorry if something is not clear; English is not my first language.
What's wrong with all the countries having useful notes pages? And why are so many useful notes pages not actually on the useful notes index page?
As someone touched upon in the archived (old system) discussion for this page, Useful Notes are really meant to be useful for one kind of person: The writer.
This makes Useful Notes subtly different from Wikipedia, in that Wikipedia articles are written without knowing what the reader wants from them.
The only analogous thing that can be said about Useful Notes is tat we can't know what kind of writer they're writen for, so they should be written for ALL kinds of writers.
(Especially with regards to my hobby horse: They should not be written ONLY from the perspective of the needs of a fan fic writer).
Hide / Show RepliesCould this also be made more friendly for people who want to do further research? Like by giving links to resources? Personally, I use these pages all the time for essays or just if I'm interested in a topic. I realize that this is where most people just go to wikipedia, but I have a harder time reading those articles, and they rarely have the kinds of examples that help me understand.
If you want to start it, or can find someone who would, I'd say go for it.
Is there a place where we can request useful notes pages that we'd like to see? Other than here, I mean.
Would Na No Wri Mo (now in the Useful Notes/ namespace) go in the Media folder?
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.Um. Why is there no link to the Useful Notes pages on countries?
Hide / Show RepliesAre there useful notes for Cellphones (smartphones and the like) yet?
"Never ever ever give up!"The "Television" section needs some help. I notice that there are entries in the list for "Best Boy", "Visual Effects", and "Sound Effects" but it appears there are no such Useful Notes articles on the site. I don't know if someone is working on them or not, but I thought it deserved mentioning. Should the non-links be left on the page as placeholders or just removed?
Fear is a superpower. So there's a Useful Notes page for Wicca and Neo-Paganism, but not for other Pagan paths. I was wondering what the process was for making one of these, specifically for Asatru*.
I've gone to the TV Tropes How To Guides and I Saw The Index, but as far as I can tell, I just write it and make the page?
Edited by DunDun Hide / Show RepliesYes. Some Useful Notes pages also get run through YKTTW, for feedback and all. Good luck!
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going. Can I make a folder for social sciences and move the psychology and economics stuff to it?
Is there a Useful Notes on ships already? There is one for Navies, but precious little on boats, parts of boats, sailing through history and modern navigation.
And if we create one, what category should it be in?
To subpage-ify or not to subpage-ify.
I added all the country pages out of a feeling that this page should list all the Useful Notes, as desired, for example, by Morgie above. But that doesn't actually seem like a good idea, considering how many country ones there are, and how generally obvious it can be to look in the continent pages for them.
But it does seem good to list all the non-country-name Useful Notes, like Chinese Funerary Customs, that currently arn't listed. What I suggest is to list only the country Useful Notes that are themselves indexes for other Useful Notes, like UsefulNotes. The United States and UsefulNotes.China, along with the Useful Notes listed therein. What do you say?
U Seful Notes? Isn't it supposed to be Useful Notes? Is there an Overly Long Gag i don't know about?
Edited by Gundamforce Hide / Show RepliesThe page's appearance depends on how you type in. It is Useful Notes, but you typed it in differently.
