"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIn my opinion, the goblins and hobgoblins from the Spiderwick Chronicles fit this trope.
Shouldn't the "Gotta love me!" line at the end of the second-to-last paragraph be linked to Dinosaurs?
Not only is it an exact quote, but The Baby is definitely an example.
I can understand that we don't want to list people as examples, but Real Life also includes animals, like certain breeds of dogs, such as the one in the page image.
Hide / Show Replies"Listing animals under this trope because they aren't insulted by being called so" is a standard of coherency, though.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI think we definitely need to include animals. There are lots of potential species out there.
SMILE DARN YA SMILEDoes 'scary' or 'creepy' also fit the criteria for 'ugly'? I mean, does it have to be actually ugly or just something that people wouldn't normally find cute?
"AXEL ON STAAAAGE!" Hide / Show RepliesI guess anything that isn't conventionally cute/attractive would qualify. A well-known Killer Rabbit (so long as the "killer" part is common knowledge) that's at least still conventionally cute probably doesn't count.
I have found this example from Doctor Who which suffers from This Troper as well as Zero Context Example. Could someone with knowledge of the show fix it please?
- This troper's 10yo troperette claims that K-9 also falls under this trope.
Does this trope cover cuteness which is twisted into ugliness, or is that (as I understand it to be) the inversion of this trope?
If so, is there a trope for that?
(Example: The artwork for Hyperbole And A Half.)
Edited by Kurtulmak Hide / Show RepliesNo, it really doesn't.
This has got to be like the 5,000th time I forgot my email or password...We should change the picture to Milo from Legend of Korra.
Hide / Show RepliesTake it to Image Pickin'. Or at LEAST explain what he looks like.
This has got to be like the 5,000th time I forgot my email or password...Soooooooo...since Troper Tales is gone, can we add Real Life examples again? We'll just make sure that users lump related animals into expanded bullet points.
- The Leopard Gecko is Ugly Cute, along with its cousin, the African Fat-Tailed Gecko.
- Geckos in general are Ugly Cute, really.
How should Grimmleigh's Fiends be classified? http://www.grimmleighs.com/
Real Life? Is there a Handcrafted Media category?
Trubbish from Pokemon? Acluly we could prbbly list most Poison types.

Were dos she go? I have no Ideas were shes from but I saw fan art and think she fits this trope.
With the power of a dragon I can make up for my inability to spill. Hide / Show RepliesDo you mean from Gorillaz?
Most likely the Music folder. I already moved 2D (another Gorillaz character) to that folder.
Edited by endangeredmonkeyYes I guess so thanks.
With the power of a dragon I can make up for my inability to spill.Barano: "kimoi doumei" means "alliance of ugliness" - it's more like a fan club for people who like ugly characters/things. "Busukawaii" (lit. "ugly cute") is the actual term for the trope.
It's been mentioned before, but I think an exception to "No Real Life Examples" could credibly be made for animals, specifying it as such and strongly regulating anything else from real-life. The current image is of a pug, after all, so there's obviously at least ONE example of that which qualifies enough to be chosen above anything else. Bats and opossums in particular are also good examples.
