In Sonic Generations, Eggman deliberately does this as revenge against Sonic by using the Time Eater, thrusting Sonic into the White Space, a region beyond time, and shattering time from at least as far back as 1991. When Sonic finally faces the Time Eater, it's at the Center of Time, where the Time Eater has taken chunks of places from various moments in the franchise and sent them floating about.
First:White Space isn't a region beyond, it's just another dimension this was stated in the manual and in the game itself
Second:iirc the place where Sonic fought Time eater was called the end of time in the encyclospeedia so we should change that too
Third:For relevance:we should mention that Time eater's tearing through time and changing history would result into the destruction of space time or time crash as tails said "the more your monsters tears through time the more damage you do to the world" and also "mess with all of space-time"
This is also implied by the existence of Crisis City: the end of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) meant its timeline was erased, yet the Time Eater's actions have made it accessible from White Space. Blaze the Cat from Crisis City also appears, rather than her Sonic Rush counterpart.
It's been confirmed by word of god and other material that blaze from 06 and rush are the same, it's just everyone got amnesia after the reset in 06
