I don't think I understand this trope was I was surprised to not see Ghost Rider or Spawn under comics.

... why does the description keep referring to a character as "The Punishment"? It's... confusing and bizarre.

Would V (from the V for Vendetta comic and movie) count? His punishment was not, as far as I know, for committing a terrible crime (although the local authorities probably think it was), but his punishment did result in him becoming as powerful as he is. And using his new powers on the ones that punished him.
