- To be fair, the creators originally wanted to make an American version of Sherlock, but the creators of Sherlock refused.
Did they? The impression I had was that they were in talks, when the makers of Elementary suddenly realised that The BBC didn't own "modern day Sherlock Holmes", and they didn't need licencing rights. Looking back, the official statements by Sue Vertue don't really seem clear either way, just that the original idea was "American Sherlock", and then it wasn't.
Edited by DaibhidCI think a few entries are more X Meets Y rather than setting update. Isn't a setting update an adaption/remake/sequel/retcon (but not a spiritual successor) that contains the essence of the original but updates the setting to more recent times/events/closer creator promixity?
- Mel Gibson's The Patriot is arguably Mel Gibson's Braveheart IN AMERICA!
- Braveheart is Mad Max IN SCOTLAND!
- Australia is Out Of Africa IN AUSTRALIA!
- Disturbia is Rear Window WITH TEENAGERS!
Pulled three video game entries:
- "Dantes Inferno is God of War DURING THE CRUSADES, IN HELL!": Both have their own independent source material and both games take place several centuries before they were made. Games that simply have similar gameplay elements don't count.
- "Batman Arkham Asylum is Metroid Prime WITH BATMAN!" and "Batman Arkham City is Assassin's Creed WITH BATMAN!": These ones are frankly, baffling. The three franchises have absolutely nothing in common, and the Arkham games come from source material that is much older than the the other two, and therefore aren't updates of either.
None of these actually update the setting.
- Dungeons And Dragons 4e has been called a fantasy MMORPG ON YOUR TABLETOP!
- Nyambe is Dungeons & Dragons IN DARKEST AFRICA!
- White Wolf's Year of the Lotus event, which gave us the following:
- Kindred OF THE EAST!
- Hengeyokai: Shapeshifters OF THE EAST!
- Land of Eight Million Dreams: Changelings OF THE EAST!
- Demon Hunter X: Hunters OF THE EAST!
- Kingdom of Jade: Wraiths OF THE EAST!
- Dragons OF THE EAST! -for Mage: The Ascension, the least disjointed book in the set because there have been Asiatic mages among the Traditions and smaller crafts since the beginning. This book simply introduces a few more. Only Mummy: The Resurrection didn't receive a nod, which is a shame because the Wu'Tian, the mummies OF THE EAST!, would have greatly benefited from having a sourcebook.

- The Mystic Knights Of Tir Na Nog was Power Rangers IN MYTHOLOGICAL IRELAND!
- Star Trek (TOS) was actually pitched to the studio as Wagon Train IN SPACE, IN THE FUTURE!
So completely Recycled In Space.
Thinking about re-organizing the Shakespeare examples by what play they're based on. Any thoughts?
Should this trope be changed? Right now, most of the examples seem pretty much the same as Recycled IN SPACE. My understanding of this trope seems like it should be limited to the intentional examples of telling the same story in a different setting. For example, Naruto may debatably share some similarities with Dragonball, but I don't feel like it's useful to put it under this trope. A better example is Dragonball to Journey to the West, because the various references make it obvious that that was the intention in the beginning.
Hide / Show RepliesI was thinking the same thing. all the examples described as "X... WITH Y!!!" is almost impossible to tell from the examples of recycled in space. I think maybe it'd be best to make the differences more clear, or to just combine the two tropes together.
I just want to say how badly I am tempted to throw in a IN A CAVE! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!!
Pulled this:
The phrase "setting update" could mean "moving the setting forward to progress the story", but in the case of the trope, doesn't. And Starfinder is Recycled In Space, and already there.
