The description was recently expanded with this paragraph:
- Sometimes, especially if their are actually multiple lines of descent claiming the throne, the rightful king may have to go through a Secret Test of Character to show he is in-fact "rightful" (good and competent).
I read through the entire list of examples below, and did not find a single one which mentioned a Secret Test of Character. This addition also makes it sound like "rightful" is a synonym of "good and competent", which is not the case. By convention the "rightful king" is also good and competent, but goodness and competence is not what makes you rightful.
Edited by LordGro Let's just say and leave it at that.

Removed this because it cAme with a "this troper" statement instead of a title. Please help find the title so it can go back on the examples list.
- Subverted in a fantasy novel [_NAME_]; our heroine shows up claiming that her father was the elder brother of the tyrannical current king's father, and therefore she is the rightful heir to the throne. Her rebellion is a success, and it's not until the epilogue, set several decades into her reign, that it's revealed that she's an orphan who made the whole thing up.
The 2nd bullet point on the real life folder starts with "A while back". It shouldn't say that because Examples Are Not Recent. Does anyone know when that actually happened, so that the proper date could be added?
