Are Replacement Scrappies really that bad of characters? They are different from the original character in their own ways.

Although I have an example for the Western Animation section of this article, I still feel it needs a little work. Feel free to look it over and see if there's anything I need to change about it before I add it.

Is there a trope that is the opposite of the Replacement Scrappy? Like a Replacement of the Scrappy.

Not as far as I know.

Can we switch it to "Scrappy Replacement"? "Replacement Scrappy" sounds like a scrappy replacing another scrappy. "Scrappy Replacement" is Exactly What It Says on the Tin though, so it's clearer.

Edit: ... Never mind, it'd be just as bad.

Yeah, both actually would be confusing, since "replacement" has two senses (1. the act of replacing, 2. the new thing being put into place). Two words is pretty limiting - how about Replacement Becomes The Scrappy? Sure, it's not as witty, but it's much less confusing. Confusing names seem to invite Trope Decay.

These ARE the droids we're looking for. That was lucky.

I think Family Guy is intentionally parodying this trope now with this new Vinnie dog. His introduction seemed standard enough, but the second episode to feature him they were clearly intentionally making him unlikeable.

We should have a trope that's the inverse of this. Where the newcomer is much more popular than the original. One example would be Peach in Super Mario 3 D World for that Yellow Toad.

  • There was also a whole culture of Replacement Scrappies in the shape of the Cybus Cybermen. They were an alternate-universe version of the Cybermen, created on an alternate Earth rather than Mondas, who replaced the original versions during the Russell T Davies era because Davies wanted to do a Cyberman origin story but also felt that the mass audience weren't interested in any culture that wasn't human. Many old-school fans were quite contemptuous of the Cybusmen because they thought that the replacement wasn't necessary and because the new origin was considered a boring duplicate of the Dalek origin. Steven Moffat has confirmed that the Cybermen in the 2010 and 2011 seasons of the show are Mondasian, leading to old-school fan rejoicing.

Other than being created by a smart person in a wheelchair, are the similarities that pronounced? Weren't the Daleks the result of a war?

Most of the Tekken examples don't belong here. Characters being replaced is only half the trope. Almost all of the replacements mentioned are well-liked.

How do you call a Replacement Scrappy that has total no respect for his predeccesor? A fictional example using CSI: After replacing Gil, Raymond Langston is constantly saying bad things about him like "Gil was a terrible boss", "He couldn't do things right" or "Things are now better with me".

Does this still count as this trope, or should it be another one?
